hen you think back on your High School Prom, was it everything you dreamed it would be? Well then, you’ll be happy to know you can come and relive it this New Year’s Eve. If it wasn’t, come and get your do-over at Big Rock Pub. We’ll be “Donging” in the New Year in 1980s Neon Prom style with 80’s pop synth band, Long Duk Dong. Corsages, boutonnieres, teased hair, bubble bangs, will be captured

in prom photos. Party favors, live music and midnight toast are all included in your ticket purchase. This is going to be the FUNNEST NEW YEAR’S...LIKE...EVER!!! Warning: The punch will most definitely be spiked. The band rocking the celebration is our desert’s own favorite, award winning 80s tribute band, Long Duk Dong. These 6-time winners of the Coachella Valley Music Awards, fronted by Chelsea Sugarbritches

(Best Female Vocalist, Best Front Woman) and Nicco Ysiano, nominee for Best Male Vocalist, will take you back to one of the most creative and wild times in music history. Wear your best neon prom dress and matching tuxedos, or be a rebellious duo and come as your favorite 80s bad boy and girl! We’ll have a photo booth ready for you. We even have a discounted hotel suite and hotel shuttle set up so you can... you know - do whatever kids do after prom. Big Rock Pub is celebrating its third New Year’s Eve after opening November of 2016. If you haven’t been there yet, this will be a perfect opportunity. New owner, Ken Hanna, poured a lot of love and rock memorabilia into the venue inspiring awe and good times over the past two years. In keeping with its salute to the music of our time, the menu covers are record albums purchased from our desert’s own Record Alley in Palm Desert, a shop that has survived all the changes the music industry has thrown at them. And this may sound weird, but you really do need to see the bathrooms. They are amazing. The venue has a state of the art sound and light system run by award winning Jeff Mazur who also happens to be in the band. All of this looks over the beautiful 18th green of the Big Rock Golf Course at Indian Springs, also owned by Hanna. Tickets are already selling fast, but fortunately, we have a large heated patio where you can view and hear the stage on several TVs and speakers. A few VIP tables complete with table service are available. Doors open for New Year’s Eve seating at 7 pm. We’ll be taking this party into the wee hours of the morning! The patio and outside bar will also be open, and the firepit will be roaring. The weatherman says it’s going to be a “totally bodacious” night.

A comfortable, intimate, nicely appointed neighborhood theater that consistently exhibits a nice mix of mainstream and indie films. Good

projection and sound, plush seating and best of all, no reservations required! How nice is that? Rich Henrich - Features Writer The wonderful thing about Christmas and the Holiday Season is we stop and make time to recognize each other, our friends, families and loved ones. In our pause, we come together and count our blessings no matter if our year has been filled with triumph or strife. We become better versions of ourselves individually and collectively as we take a moment and gather our gratitude and count our gifts, the greatest being the love we share with each other. We honor tradition in personal and thoughtful ways and reflect on the significance of reverence. We make time to decorate and beautify our homes, offices and towns and stand in awe of the collective achievement of our community efforts. We have parades and celebrate children, the ones who will inherit the gifts we Shepard. We open our hearts (and often our wallets, too!) to give more than we seek to receive. We seek to care for those less fortunate and stop just long enough to see what is possible no matter the circumstances. It is the time of the year that the ordinary becomes extraordinary through our belief in the majestic and the magical. If we remember how this season came to be and embrace the spirit of the season every day, imagine what we would have to do to make this Holiday spectacular next year! When asked to name a few of my favorite things in the Coachella Valley, I must first begin with what matters most. At the top, Tracy and Phil, Chance and the rest of the staff for creating a weekly that unites us all. People - We are blessed in many ways in the desert but all across the desert, I have encountered amazing people with beautiful hearts, encouraging smiles, inspirational

aspirations, a love of community, uplighting laughter and an unquestionable willingness to help a neighbor or a stranger with their struggles. The people are what embody the magic of this place and I am blessed to know many of the most incredible musicians, artists, entrepreneurs, leaders and kind souls that make the desert a crazy and beautiful landscape capable of creating such an oasis. Restaurants - I have two, one my list as technically one closed this year. Randy’s Cafe wasn’t just a restaurant, it was a living room and a town hall filled with congeniality and hospitality. It was a place where strangers walked in and friendships formed. It was a place where all were welcome and everyone was a somebody from rock legends to locals. Randy made everyone a star. It was a place that always felt like coming home and the experience Randy McWilliams curated will be greatly missed. Rumor has it that Randy will still be making breakfast at the speakeasy-to-come a few days a week and that softens the loss but what he created ought to be honored and remembered as a monumental achievement in social science! Another one of my favorite places to experience the Coachella Valley flavor is El Rincon Norteno. Quietly tucked along a stretch of Indio Blvd., this restaurant has been serving traditional Mexican food with hints of Texas and

At midnight, a live multimedia countdown and fireworks spectacular will ring in the West Coast New Year. The “Rockin’ 80s New Year’s Eve Party” at Spa Resort Casino is an outdoor ticketed event. BEST OF 2018

New Mexico flavor since 1964. The machaca is one of my favorite items and the hot salsa is highly addictive. The service is always warm and the food is always delicious. Music & Events - We are blessed with rich cultural experiences all across the Valley but a few of my favorites are Palm Springs ShortFest, incredible storytellers from around the world present their work, short in form but large in creativity, entertainment and impact. One of the most regarded short film festivals in the world presents a showcase of significant talent. Polo while a sport, is actually better experienced as a uniquely curated Coachella Valley event. And as for music, we have sonic gifts every day from venue to venue but one destination I always enjoy is Pappy and Harriets as you never know what famous musician or to-be-discovered talent will take the stage. It doesn’t hurt to have eclectic Pioneertown right outside either. Kirby - Advertising Sales Restaurant: Wilma & Frieda’s in Palm Desert they also have a new location Palm Springs!! Vet: “Paws and Claws” Dr. Jameson and staff are so compassionate, Best in the Desert!! Hair Salon: Brien O Brien in Palm Springs. Great friendly staff!! Best Event: First 420 Party on El Paseo! LOCAL MUSIC

I

n celebrating the year that was 2018, Coachella Valley Weekly decided to ask some of our preeminent musicians about the past year and their most memorable highlights and challenges. In next week’s edition, we talk about their outlook on 2019. WHEN TIDES TURN – “2018 has been a great year for us, from getting to play with tons of amazing bands like Murkocet, He Films the Clouds, Ormus, Sentiment, Annabelle Asylum, Kill the Radio, the CMFs and so many more, to recording our first EP with Jerry Whiting at Room 9 Studios, to being nominated for ‘Best New Band’ to putting out our first music video and all the love and support we have gotten from the valley, CV Weekly and CV Independent. There is just so much and it would be a book’s worth of words to describe all the awesome experiences we’ve had this year.” MEGA SUN – “Being that 2018 was Mega Sun’s first year as a performing band, there were many highlights and challenges. To name a few highlights, we entered the CV Music Showcase and performed in front of industry professionals as our first show taking any advice and critiques from judges. We did not win our round but were called and told we were a ‘wild card’ for the finals. We regrettably could not make the date due to members being out of the country but were ecstatic nonetheless. We were also asked to perform during the 2018 CV Music Awards and were awarded ‘Best New Band’ and ‘Best Drummer’. Amidst all of this, we were in the studio recording our first three-track EP with Mikey Doling (Snot). We also participated in a local competition to have our music played in a 30-day rotation on 93.7 KCLB. Yet again, we were surprised by taking home a win. We also played a show where Nick Oliveri (former QOTSA, Kyuss) joined us on stage to perform the song Green Machine. We played many memorable shows, including our first festival. Later on in the year we were asked to play the Whisky a Go-Go and The Viper Room in Hollywood. The year just kept getting better and better. The challenges we experienced were; not having a permanent place to practice that resulted in a SWAT team showing up at our very first practice, not having the funds to really finish and release the EP and not having merch for our fans. Oh, and agreeing on a band name, Ha-ha.”

DESERT MUSIC - 2018 IN RETROSPECT

THE CMFs – “We’ve been hard at work on preparing our up-and-coming album for most of the year. However, having our song, ‘Who I Once Was’ played on 93.7 for the first time and performing for their ‘Support Local Music’ show is definitely a memorable highlight for the year. It felt good to be broadcast and heard throughout the entire valley and see all the support from our hometown family and friends! We also traveled to Grand Terrace, CA earlier this year for our first show outside of the Coachella Valley and Hi-Desert areas. We put on a great show for a fresh packed crowd and had tons of local support as well. Working on preparing our album and everything else we have in store for release would also have to be our biggest challenge of the year. We’ve learned and grown a lot in the process of making this album and can’t wait to put all our hard work out there for the world to hear.” James Johnson of RIVAL ALASKA – “From moments like ordering a burger from a burger place and having them forget the patty - to essentially having to sleep inside our truck while on tour, 2018 has got to be the most defining year for ourselves as musicians. We’ve rebranded our music and act, gone on tour - twice. Opened up for acts we’ve been listening to for years, graced several opulent stages including the McCallum Theatre. This could go on and on, but I know 2019 is going to be even more of a mouthful of memories and we can’t wait for that.” INSTIGATOR – “Releasing the demo, playing with DRI as well as Doyle were all great Instigator highlights for 2018. As for challenges, it took us a while to complete our band website but that’s now another cool achievement of ours (theinstigatorband. com).” YIP YOPS – “We used the year to continue pushing ourselves forward with new music, recording and releasing our single and music video, touring up and down the West Coast, our The Echo residency over the summer, etc. Perhaps the biggest obstacle we ran into was getting a bit comfortable in certain ways. Due to the constant stream of shows, we didn’t allow ourselves time to critique and evolve as much as we wanted to. Although, we feel we’ve left 2018 in a place to do that in ways we’ve never been able to before.” Chad Cancino of BOHEMIO – “Memorable highlights were receiving the 2018 Pioneer

Award at the Coachella Valley Music Awards ceremony and I began to work on my recording project.” Aaron Merc of BLACK MARKET JAZZ – “Most memorable highlights…probably just getting to play next to some pretty incredible cats, both local and from out of town. I’ve learned so much from just reaching out and sharing a few drinks with these knowledgeable experienced musicians. As for challenges… playing next to these incredible musicians! Ha Ha Ha. The bar is set pretty high sometimes, just gotta keep shreddin›!” Derek Wade Timmons of SLEAZY CORTEZ and DEATH IN PRETTY WRAPPING – “2018 was the busiest Sleazy Cortez year ever…gigwise. Death in Pretty Wrapping at the Hard Rock Las Vegas! Meeting more and more bad-ass musicians!” Mike Pygmie of JOHN GARCIA & THE BAND OF GOLD, MONDO GENERATOR, YOU KNOW WHO and FAULTS OF ANDREAS – “Musically speaking the biggest highlight of 2018 for me was playing the Hard Rock Las Vegas with John Garcia and the Band of Gold. Not only was it a real fun show but we got to play with some other great bands that are our friends like Death In Pretty Wrapping, Luna Sol and Nick Oliveri. Plus having Nick, Arthur Seay, Dave Angstrom and Chris Hale all joining us on stage for different songs made it a special night for sure.” Brian “Puke” Parnell of THROW THE GOAT – “The most memorable highlights of 2018 that first come to mind are easily things like playing Vans Warped Tour for the first time and supporting Agent Orange in Costa Rica. Winning ‘Best Punk Band’ at the CVMAs was awesome. And then there’s the Combat Records deal and the release of ‘The Joke’s On Us’ which kicked off the year. 2018 was definitely eventful, to say the least!” AVENIDA – “We took a big step forward and incorporated as an LLC this year. We are all in on turning this band into a business that can benefit the community and allow us to make money to support ourselves as well as do what we love. We also won the CV Independent “Best Band” award and were able to play some great events such as Desert Arc’s 60th Anniversary Open House.” Danny White of THE FLUSTERS – “For me, it was launching my business, Idyllwild Organics LLC, and preparing for the release of ‘Dreamsurf’ with The Flusters.” Bobby Taffolla of PERISHMENT – “The biggest highlight of the year definitely has to be the release of our LP, ‘Saturnine’. That being said, it was also the biggest challenge. Not musically so much, but time overall and a production learning curve. At the end of the day (year), we couldn’t be happier with the end result.” Aaron Ramson of PERISHMENT & CAKES AND THE ASSHOLES – “Collaborating with Monica Morones/Cakes, Josh Fimbres from THR3 STRYKES, and Razor J on the first incarnation of Cakes and the Assholes was a lot of fun. It’s fun to be a part of a project where you collaborate with your peers on different music than you normally would be writing. Finally releasing the new Perishment album was definitely a highlight! We’ve been working on it for three years!”

BY NOE GUTIERREZ Nico Flores of SE7EN4 – “Memorable highlights would include getting together and practicing. Challenges? Getting together and practicing.” Matt King of FRANKEATSTHEFLOOR – “This year has been nothing short of amazing! Winning ‘Best Youth Band’, releasing our second EP, and growing as people and as a band has made this year great! We have faced many challenges but have worked together as a group to overcome them.” Joseph Beltran of FRANKEATSTHEFLOOR – “Looking back at 2018, the most memorable highlight has to be all of it! It’s been a roller coaster ride that lasted as long as this entire year. I think just being with the band is always a great time no matter what.” Justin Ledesma of SUNDAY FUNERAL – “This has been our most successful year in terms of sales and attendance. We played a number of festivals, which is something I had always wanted to do. I really enjoyed playing in Idyllwild and San Diego.” Linda Lemke Heinz of 5TH TOWN and BLASTING ECHO – “We started recording 5th Town’s first album. Very exciting. Blasting Echo is getting ready to record our third album. I’m looking forward to it as our style keeps morphing and it will really show how we’ve grown as a band.” Christian Colin of GISELLE WOO & THE NIGHT OWLS and DESET RHYTHM PROJECT – “Probably the most memorable highlight of 2018 was playing two back to back sets at Joshua Tree Music Festival. It was definitely surreal playing with Giselle Woo and the Night Owls then running over to the next stage to play with Desert Rhythm Project. It was also a challenging year for making ends meet but that’s never permanent, so I suppose all you can do is keep your head up and move forward.” THE HELLIONS – “Memorable highlight for us is still being to work together creatively with one another and having loads of new material we are getting ready for a 2019 release.” Chelsea Sugarbritches of 5TH TOWN and LONG DUK DONG – “My highlights were playing rad events like ‘A Mixed Up Desert Music Party’ that Jeff Bowman put on that benefited the Desert Cancer Foundation, the ‘Concert for Autism’ and the ‘Idyllwild Strong - Cranston Fire Benefit’. My biggest highlight and challenge this year has been recording 5th Town’s first album.” SLIPPING INTO DARKNESS – “Highlights of 2018 would definitely be recording and finishing our second album with Pete Dee (The Adicts) and Eduardo Arenas (Chicano Batman). It was a one of a kind experience from start to finish. They made us much better musicians. The biggest challenges were trying to improve our sound the most we could and to not be afraid of change. That’s probably the hardest part for any musician or artist in general, to take risks that will allow you to leave a repetitive cycle and at the same time being true with your expressions.”

MELROSE MUSIC - BRINGING GOOD VIBES TO PALM SPRINGS AND HOLLYWOOD

M

elrose Music takes pride in helping artists turn their music into exactly what they envision. Veteran recording, mixing and mastering guru, David Williams brings years of experience and a knack for the craft. He has worked with so many people in the music industry that the list would take days to write. Melrose Music Studios offers two facilities in Southern California, which are both at the top of the list for most desirable recording and vacation meccas. Melrose Music Hollywood is located on Melrose Avenue on the prestigious Raleigh Studios movie lot. This facility has been a driving force over the last decade in the L.A. music production scene. Melrose Music Palm Springs, located on Palm Canyon Drive, directly in the heart of the desert oasis, caters to the massive So Cal desert community of musicians and those around the globe who know the vital life forces this area can bring to your music and spirit. Melrose Music Studios is a solid creative environment designed for recording, mixing and mastering. They also offer an array of services to help artists get their music out to the world. These services include complete artist development and support. Using world-class, top-line gear they help artists capture their vision to bring the music boldly to life. Coachella Valley Weekly met up with Williams to talk about both locations and his tenure in the Coachella Valley. On his background and the inception of Melrose Music Studios in Hollywood: “I was a road musician for about ten years deep into playing. I come from a playing background. Through that, I grew to love to produce records, develop talent and work with people who are trying to express themselves. I was in the Los Angeles area in 1987 and I started recording. I opened my first studio in 1997. In 2006, I had the opportunity to go onto the Raleigh Studios Hollywood lot and I knew the president, so he brought me on and I’ve been there ever since. The studio has been there since 1915, actors like Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford have called it their home. I split my time between Palm Springs and L.A.” On some of his favorite moments in Hollywood: “I come from Michigan and have a Motown background. I’ve worked with many people from that era like The Pointer Sisters and Brian Holland from ‘Holland-DozierHolland’, the songwriting and production team that was responsible for much of the Motown sound. He was involved with hit records by Martha and the Vandellas, The Supremes, The Four Tops, and The Isley Brothers. I’ve also worked with Howard Leese, the guitarist, record producer, and musical director who played with Heart for 23 years and Vivian Campbell from Def Leppard and DIO. I’ve devoted time with

Taylor Dayne and spent a whole summer with George Clinton.” On what drew him to the Coachella Valley: “I’ve traveled to Palm Springs every year since I’ve been in L.A. When I came out here, I loved the vibe. Finally, three years ago, I found a place here, one thing led to another and then I realized there’s such a great musical family out here with great artists. The immense amount of talent out here really excited me, so I decided I wanted to focus as much as I could on Palm Springs. I still go to L.A. every week but Palm Springs is my focus and I want to make this my ultimate destination. I feel it. There’s great players out here. There’s a great vibe out here because everyone is not so commercial. Everyone out here is trying to support the love for music, where back in L.A., there’s more commercialism. I feel out here there’s some undiscovered talent and that’s why I’m drawn to this area.” On the Coachella Valley-based artists he has connected with so far: “I’ve worked with and been impressed with Esjay Jones, Robert Poole, Courtney Chambers, Brad Mercer, Giselle Woo and Peter Sutter to name a few.” On what he loves about being in the desert: “I’ve played at Pappy and Harriet’s quite a few times and I love the vibe of that room. I’m excited about the songwriting and musicianship here in the desert. I feel like there’s a very special scene going on here and when I came here, I was very intrigued by it and happily surprised by the talent that’s out here.” On Melrose Music Palm Springs and some highlights: “It will be two years in May since the grand opening, which was amazing. Mayor Robert Moon came down; we had a ribbon cutting and a great party. Some of my memorable moments so far are cutting a single with Hollywoodlands Records artist Robert Poole and working with vocalist Dryden Mitchell of Alien Ant Farm along with South African born artist and superproducer Esjay Jones. That was a very inspiring session. Working with Grady James was also phenomenal. He’s a great rising Country artist.” On Melrose Music’s plans hereafter: “Continue the Hollywood tradition. In the desert, continue to work with the players out here and understand the vibe out here and try to bring the best out of the players, work with them on their vibe and their level. I’d like to shift more of my energy to the desert.” On the recording studio equipment utilized at Melrose Music: “I believe in using world-class gear to bring the sounds into the computer to create top hit records. I’m working with Neumann microphones, AMS Neve and Universal Audio preamps and compressors. Pro Tools HD is the format for recording

and mixing. Some other notable gear used here for recording are; API Audio, Pearlman Microphones, A-Designs Audio, Aurora Audio GTQ2, Tube-Tech and much more. For mastering, we use Sonic Solutions Mixing and Mastering Software as our platform of choice. That, mixed with our analog outboard gear, (Manley Labs, Avalon, TC Electronic, Waves Audio, UA, and Genelec), will deliver an unmatched quality for your master. I believe in capturing the recorded signals by way of analog with classic gear and transferring that into the computer to produce contemporary, state-of-the-art records. At Melrose Music we mix, master and record final production masters.” His message to potential clients at Melrose Music: “If you come to any Melrose Music you will walk into a professional environment

with an experienced producer that’s going to listen to you and cater to your songs and try to bring out the best from your songs and direct those songs to become massmarketable records. I can work with any genre; Pop, Rock, Country, Hip-Hop, Rap, Big-Band, Jazz, Singer-Songwriter Acoustic. I’m happy with a hard-core rapper in or a beautiful love song coming in. I don’t criticize or judge; I try to bring out the best in anyone who walks through the door no matter the genre.” Two Locations: Hollywood, CA- 5254 Melrose Ave. Hollywood, CA 90038 Palm Springs, CA- 121 S. ’ve been a record nerd since my mother bought me my “Chipmunks Sing The Beatles” record back in 1967. I have probably been making lists like this since I was a teenager, always operating on the arrogant assumption that the world would be fascinated by my favorite music of any given year. So here are my jams for 2018. Elvis Costello “Look Now.” (Concord Records) – Elvis Costello has been my spiritual boyfriend since I received a Police Regatta de Blanc cassette on my 17th birthday and exchanged it at Gemco (I already had it), for Elvis’ new Get Happy album. In the 41 years since his 1977 debut he has added a tackled a plethora of musical genres. Characterized an angry young Punk at the beginning, he is now considered an erudite elder stateman of Rock. Look Now is his 29th studio album and his first in 10 years with his stalwart backing band, The Imposters. This new album recalls Imperial Bedroom, his Baroque masterpiece from 1982, as well as Painted From Memory, his 1998 collaboration with Burt Bacharach. Even as the musical settings are lush and sophisticated, Elvis’ lyrics never lose their caustic bite. Deep, dark and richly nuanced, it’s a brilliant effort that reveals something new with each listen. Jimmer & Syd “Shoulder To Cry On” (Jimmermusic.com) – Jimmer Podrasky and Syd Straw have both been working musicians for more than 30 years. He gained notoriety fronting the proto-alt.country (Americana, whatever) band the Rave-Ups. She is a sui generis song stylist that has recorded three pluperfect solo albums, and guested on records by Dave Alvin, Rickie Lee Jones, Los Lobos, Richard Thompson and Wilco, just to name a few. Jimmer asked Syd to sing a duet with him on his 2017 album, God Like Sun, that seemed to open the door to a broader collaboration. Shoulder… arrived this summer, a sublime six song set that spotlighted their nonpareil vocal blend. Something of a 21st century Sonny & Cher, this musical odd couple have created something special here. Hopefully it’s only the beginning. Luther Russell “Selective Memories: An Anthology” (Ungawa/Hanky Panky Recrords) – I pride myself on knowing about music, but Luther Russell somehow slipped under my radar. Turns out he’s been making music in my Hollywood hometown since he was a teenager in the late ‘80s. Originally from California’s

central coast, his grandparents and Great Uncle were fairly famous songwriters, so music seemed like a natural career path. This sprawling, two CD set (one day my musical prayers will be answered and a label will put it all on vinyl), runs the gamut. It features songs from his first band, the Bootheels, which featured Jakob Dylan and Tobi Miller, and his most lasting band the Freewheelers, to Federale, his short-lived partnership with Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford. Much of the music is previously unreleased and reflect a plethora of influences. Smart yet shambolic, his music can be favorably compared to predecessors like Arthur Lee of Love, Harry Nilsson, Bob Dylan, Isaac Hayes (seriously) and contemporaries like Ryan Adams, the late Elliott Smith and Jeff Tweedy. This is the perfect introduction to a brilliant artist. the innocence mission “Sun On The Square” (Badman Records) – The innocence mission’s self-titled debut was released nearly 30 years ago, during a kinder, gentler era. Even though the world has currently turned divisive and hostile, the band (originally a fourpiece, currently a trio), still operates under the assumption that most sentient humans view the world with a modicum of optimism. Their sound has always been hushed and contemplative and that continues on Sun... their 12th long-player. Conjuring up rainy days and snowy lakes and the simple pleasures of watching the leaves change in autumn, their music is spiritual but never preachy, Ephemeral and ethereal. A soothing balm for these uncertain times. Bird Streets “Bird Streets” (Omnivore Recordings) – John Brodeur has been a solo artist for nearly two decades, his albums have garnered favorable comparisons to Todd Rundgren and Robyn Hitchcock. Adopting the band name Bird Streets, the New York native enlisted his West Coast pal, multi-instrumentalist/producer (and a talented singer-songwriter in his own right), Jason Falkner. The result is this impeccable debut. Sunshiny melodies collide with ornate instrumentation and trenchant wordplay. Bird Streets charts an exciting new course in John’s musical journey. The Magpie Salute “High Water 1” (Eagle Records/Universal Music Group) – Successful second acts are a rare commodity in Rock N’ Roll. When the Black Crowes imploded in 2015 and brothers Chris and Rich Robinson went their separate ways, no one could have predicted that Rich would rebound and form The Magpie Salute. During the Black Crowes nearly quarter century run, Chris was the peacock-y front man and Rich was the workhorse guitarist, following their acrimonious split, Rich hit the ground running. He assembled a crack cadre of players

including ex-Black Crowe lead guitarist, Marc Ford, soulful vocalist John Hogg, bassist Sven Pipien, drummer Joe Magistro and Matt Slocum on keys. The six-piece road tested their sound before heading into the studio. Alternately economical, extravagant and elegiac, each song offers up a different color in their sonic palette. Thoughtful, socially conscious lyrics are buttressed by crackling arrangements and crisp instrumentation. It’s a dazzling distillation of a combo-platter of influences that remains wholly original. Chris Price “Dalmatian” (Omnivore Recordings) – About 25 years ago I spent a frigid New Year’s weekend with a friend at her friend’s apartment in San Francisco. A voluble Irish woman was among the mix of friends I didn’t know and she wouldn’t shut up, spewing opinions on a variety of topics. Apropos of nothing, she announced in her clipped Irish brogue; “Kate Bush, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, fucking brilliant.” I didn’t disagree, but I would rarely use those two words to describe anyone. Unless it’s Elvis Costello, or Chris Price. The son of a Grammy winning producer, he grew up living above a recording studio in Miami Beach. Musical practically from birth, he began playing as a kid and hasn’t slowed down. He landed in L.A. about 12 years ago and quickly found work playing in bands and producing legacy artists like Linda Perhacs and Emitt Rhodes. He quietly self-released his solo debut in 2012. Even as he was concentrating on production, Chris managed to amass about 30 new songs of his own. Cherry-picking 14, he signed with Omnivore Recordings, and his second record, Stop Talking arrived in 2017. A subtle synthesis of his various myriad inspirations, it ended up on several influential Top 10 lists. A year later he returned with Dalmatian. Although the songs were technically outtakes from the Stop Talking sessions, this was no odds n’ sods collection. Alternately witty, sincere and soulful lyrics unspool atop stacked harmonies, Jangly guitars and Pop-tastic, panoramic melodies. Brilliant doesn’t begin to describe how exceptional Dalmatian is. Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore “Downey To Lubbock” (YepRoc Records) – These two! This collaboration should have happened decades ago. Dave Alvin and his brother Phil first gained notoriety fronting their powerful Roots Rock combo, the Blasters. The five-piece added a Bluesy authenticity to L.A.’s thriving Punk scene. A decade older than Dave, Jimmie Dale grew up in the Texas Panhandle, he first attracted attention as part of the The Flatlanders, a seminal Americana trio that included fellow Texas troubadours Joe Ely and Butch Hancock. Dave has been a solo artist since the late ‘80s, as has Jimmie

Dale, naturally their paths crossed and the pair became pals. This partnership feels relaxed and natural. Dave’s rumbling baritone dovetails with perfectly Jimmie Dale’s Lonestar twang. The duo tackle Alvin originals as well as classic cuts that are an organic blend of Blues, Folk, Country and Rock. Recently, they tore the roof off Pappy & Harriet’s. Madeleine Peyroux “Anthem” (Decca Records) – Although Madeleine has been around for about 22 years, she has only recorded eight albums. That’s okay, she takes her time and waits for inspiration to strike. She went eight years between her 1996 debut and her sophomore effort, 2004’s Careless Love. That was a bona fide hit, both critically and commercially. Over the next decade she released five more albums, each an artful mix of telling covers and sharp original songs. An old soul, her supple vocal style recall antecedents like Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf. On Anthem, Madeleine co-wrote nearly every track with longtime producer Larry Klein and acclaimed singer-songwriter David Baerwald. The catalyst for this album was the 2016 election. Even as the Country is torn apart by divisive tribalism, the socially conscious lyrics never wallow in the sturm und drang. By turns, playful, soulful and breezy, the melodies are a sharp fusion of Folk, Jazz and Country. Political angst has never been so irresistible. Jonathan Wilson “Rare Birds” (Bella Union Records) – This North Carolina native and L.A. transplant specializes in creating ornate and complex music best experienced through a Fancy set of headphones. The 44-year-old singer-songwriter is an in-demand producer and sideman, he has spent several years as the guitarist in Roger Waters’ touring band. In between those commitments he managed to write and record his third solo album. Rare Birds is a kaleidoscopic song cycle that split the difference between rococo Psychedelia and homespun Country-Folk. If Pink Floyd and Neil Young ever made an album, it might sound like this. It’s heartfelt and smartass, a magic carpet ride of a record. I generally try and confine my choices to new material, typically excluding reissues, live albums and compilations, (although technically, Luther Russell’s album falls into that latter category. But occasionally, rules are made to be broken, and he’s my new musical crush, so suck it). But if I were so inclined, David Bowie’s Glastonbury set, as well and career-defining retrospectives from (the late great) Maggie Roche and Permanent Green Light, plus Steve Wynn’s recently reissued solo albums would have made the cut. Sadly, a Top 10 is limited to only 10 albums. I know some fellow music geeks who stretch their 10 to 20. If I were to adopt that Sort of lassiez faire attitude, I might feel compelled to include amazing albums from Jeffrey Gaines, Rosanne Cash, Ray Lamontagne and Lenny Kravitz…but I remain a disciplined Bitch Goddess. See you in 2019!

WHY IS THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN RIGHT NOW?

H

ave you noticed that the world seems to be in greater chaos than ever? And that more people are experiencing heightened personal challenges right now? It’s easy to place blame of this monumental discomfort on specific events preceding the challenges, or on something that has gone wrong in the world, but maybe this chaos is not at all what it appears to be. Maybe it doesn’t bear a message of doom and gloom. Could it actually be a cosmic signal of wondrous change on the horizon? If you consider that humanity as a whole is transitioning into the new era (known to spiritualists as the “Unity Paradigm”), it’s conceivable that these challenges represent an opportunity to clear yourself of old baggage, old story lines and anything that distorts truth in preparation for something greater than you have ever known. Have you ever cleaned your closet? What did you do? You probably took everything out and threw it on your bed. It looked like an absolute disaster, didn’t it? Your wardrobe only starts to make sense again when you categorize what you’ve got, examine what you want to get rid of and then put what you are keeping back in your closet neatly. We all have some spiritual closet cleaning to do as we disconnect from the old “Separation Paradigm” and step into the new “Unity Paradigm”. We are doing this. Humanity is bound by this cosmic agreement to transition into the new age. Right now, our clothes are all over the bed! Keep this in mind as you are watching the news. The heartbreak that unfolds on your tv or

computer screen is very real. It’s a mess but it’s a mess that serves to open human beings to greater levels of compassion, understanding, love and respect for one another. Choose to envision golden outcomes to which these events contribute. Even if you can’t see clearly what these outcomes might be, choose to see pain turn to joy on the faces of those showcased in the media. Choose to see joy on your own face as you look in the mirror. Something wonderful is coming! In our pursuit to help you connect more deeply with one another and further re-discover your gifts as an enlightened being moving into a new space, we invite you to join our interactive Facebook group and watch our show “Evolve through Love”. NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS FOR DOG LOVERS

T

his week animal lovers and their four-legged companions ring in the New Year 2019. In 2017, our region made positive strides in the battle to reduce the rate of euthanasia of animals in our public county shelter. More low cost spay and neuter programs reduce the flow of unwanted pets coming into shelters. “Rescue” is becoming the favored route, as the public becomes more aware of the problems with pet stores and backyard breeders. But there is still much work to be done. Our dream is that one year soon, the Coachella Valley will join the communities across the nation that have become “nokill”. While all cats and dogs provide affection and companionship, there is a special love and wisdom bestowed from rescued pets in their “second chance” home. These pets can help us enjoy keeping our New Year’s resolutions. Here are some ideas for your 2019 resolutions. GET HEALTHY Having a pet will improve your health, including reducing your blood pressure, stress, and loneliness. If you decide to

MEET RILEY This handsome 5-yr-old Tuxedo boy would love to be Home 4 the Holidays with you! He prefers a home with adults where he is the only cat. Rescued by www.ForeverMeow.org, call (760) 335-6767.

MEET JOEY This precious Chihuahua/ Corgi fellow is still hoping to be Home 4 the Holidays! Injured and abandoned in the desert, 4-yr-old Joey is now happy and healthy. Contact www.lovingallanimals.org or call (760) 834-7000.

quit smoking this year, you are also taking a step to improve the health of your fur friends who share your home. Obesity in pets and in their people is linked to cancer, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, and decreased life expectancy of up to 14 years in humans and up to 2.5 years in their animals. As you select healthier foods, make sure to provide better nutrition for Fluffy and Fido. Avoid serving harmful human foods to pets. Fresh carrots, cooked green beans, steamed broccoli, banana slices, and apple slices are great diet options for both you and Fido. GET FIT AND REDUCE STRESS Walking a dog keeps you both, healthy, alert, and happy. Athletic folks can enjoy the outdoors jogging and hiking with their dog. There is a proven link between stress with obesity, depression, heart disease and many other human ailments. Scientific studies prove that a special pet can help reduce all these medical problems. Dogs help our combat veterans and others cope with stress and anxiety related conditions. Pet antics make us laugh, and laughter is the best medicine.

MEET NEW PEOPLE, MAYBE A SPECIAL PERSON? Having a domestic pet will open new horizons you did not anticipate. Pets are natural ice breakers. That adorable dog you walk down the street or take to the dog park can result in your meeting new friends or even a new love interest. You score extra points when they learn your dog is a rescue dog. VOLUNTEER IN THE NEW YEAR If you resolve to help other people in 2019, pets may also play a role. If you have a calm dog who likes strangers,

consider getting him certified as a therapy dog and bring joy to hospital patients. Volunteer at a shelters or private animal welfare organization. Walk a dog for sick or elderly neighbors, or help with cat care for someone who is hospitalized. ADOPT A RESCUE PET IN THE NEW YEAR The New Year is a time for new beginnings and second chances. If you are still “petless” as 2019 arrives, go visit the hundreds of wonderful animals waiting at our shelters and rescues. Adding a second or third dog usually works out well, as long as you thoughtfully plan and introduce them on neutral turf. Email me for a copy of my article on “How to Introduce a Second Cat”. Visit our largest public shelter, the Coachella Valley Animal Campus at 72-050 Pet Land Place, Thousand Palms. View their adoptable animals at www.rcdas.com. Call (760) 343-3644 for shelter hours. Call Loving All Animals www. lovingallanimals.org at (760) 834-7000 for a list of all local shelters and rescues. Happy New Year 2019 to you and your 4-legged family members!

THE VINO VOICE

THE NEW YEAR’S NEW WINE SCENE

E

njoy the days! It’s the New Year— the pressure’s off, we’re relaxing and taking stock in our blessings. Now if that attitude isn’t one for toasting with the bubbly and uncorking some bottles of wine—well then we’re on the wrong side of time. And time is what’s marching on. So let’s take a look at some of the wines we’d like to share with friends and lovers as time continues its stride. Bucket List Wines: Way before the term “bucket list” was a thing (wasn’t there a movie with Morgan Freeman on that subject?), we wine enthusiasts were always pining away with unbearable lust for some cult crazy wine out there that we knew would make our life more complete once we savored the fruit. Shame on us! So now that we can laugh over misplaced values of the meaning of life, there is a more relaxed desire for a wine that we think may be just delicious to taste. A fun wine that I’ve been eager to write about is from our vino enfant terrible, Dave Phinney aka Orin Swift. Everyone in town is familiar with Prisoner wine, which was first produced by Orin Swift and then sold, and from the proceeds and more, Swift went on to produce the likes of Papillon, Palermo, Mannequin, Mercury Head, Abstract. Back in 2014, we did a column on his Machete—his full-on Petite Sirah, massive and powerful with intense color and structure; a limited release with a case exhibiting 12 different labels of chic women posing with machetes and white Cadillacs. But of course his peculiar and intellectually stimulating labels are part of his scene. So the new wine in Orin Swifts’ universe in 8 Years in the Desert. The name says it all and how appropriate! This wine is a new Zinfandel based blend from winemaker Dave Phinney. It’s made by E. & J. Gallo now owns Orin Swift Cellars, however Phinney is still involved. The story behind the label is that the first

commercial wine he ever made was a Zin which was not bottled but sold on the bulk market. He states that “Zinfandel may be the most difficult varietal to tame.” So in 2009, Dave Phinney took an 8 year break from making Zinfandel. But he’s back in the Zin business. I just received an 8 bottle case of the stuff. The price of the bottles range from $50 to $100, depending where you’re at and who you know. First the wine maker’s notes and then I’ll share mine. Winemaker’s Notes: “Heady aromas of brambly raspberry, black fig, and peppercorn dominate; time in the glass exposes more dark chocolate, fennel, and High Sierra forest floor. The palate is lush and opulent with blackberries, dark plums, and currants. More flavors add to the quality of the blend—a visceral minerality and fresh Herbs de Provence. It’s fully integrated with puckering tannins, the wine bows out with finesse. The blend is Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah.” When I first opened this wine, I knew I had to let it breathe for a bit. That gave me enough time to prepare a grilled rare to medium-rare cheese jalapeño hamburger. I figured this pairing would give the 8 Years in

December 27, 2018 to January 2, 2019

BY RICK RIOZZA the Desert a run for its money. It did; it’s an ideal match that you may wish to play with. 8 Years, as one would expect, is a powerful wine; but, Phinney has the gift of balance and the intensity of the wine is tapered with all the flavors still making its presence. Its aromas and flavors of red fruit, black fruit, minerality and oak maintain on the palate. For those of you who were around and enjoyed Gallo’s Hearty Burgundy back in the 1970s, this wine is reminiscent of that quaff—but this 8 Years is like that one on steroids. You Prisoner fans will love it and it’s a treat for the New Year. For those of you who have both misplaced your corkscrew and have bearings to try new wine beverages, then enter into the new year with Underwood Riesling Radler, a canned wine cooler from the Union Wine Co in Oregon. As we’ve written previously, canned wines is one of the latest crazes in our business. It’s comprised of Willamette Valley Riesling, hops and grapefruit. The owner and founder of Union Wine Co. states that one day at a production meeting he threw out, “What if we made a Radler, but with wine?” (A Radler is a traditional German beverage that is half beer and half fruit soda.) And 24 hours later they did. He further adds, “The growth we’ve seen in premium wine coolers is very encouraging, and we’re looking to

expand our line”. A 12 ounce can of the Riesling Radler costs around $5.99. Its flavor profile is easy to comprehend. If you like refreshing Riesling, and beer, and a good hint of grapefruit on the side, well then you’ll be impressed with this canned good. Finally, I’d like to raise your attention to a tasty spirit that is totally distilled wine. Most of you folks know that brandy is indeed wine that has goes through a distillery, like your other spirits in town such as vodka, bourbon, and the like. Now if one is going to make a brandy from the Cognac region in France, then your brandy will be known as “Cognac”. It’s a fancy name that deserves it. It’s been a work in progress for a long long time, and the French have it down. The new world colonists couldn’t get decent grapes to make brandy so they settled on making grain or corn whiskeys which went on to create the bourbon market. Currently I’m enjoying the Martell VS Single Distillery Fine Cognac. It’s not as “sweet” as the popular Hennessy and Courvoisier. It sell for a great price of $28 at Ralphs. One taste will simply win you over— or not. Cheers!

CREATIVE DELICIOUSNESS AT CHEEKY’S

A

creative food adventure with organic, locally sourced ingredients awaits you at Cheeky’s in Palm Springs. The first time that I went to Cheeky’s in Palm Springs, I didn’t know what a phenomenal food experience I was in for. But I had heard so many wonderful things about it, I didn’t mind waiting in their signature long waiting list to get in. It can sometimes be a bit of a wait, but once you’re in, the wait is a distant and insignificant memory. Open for breakfast and lunch, the menu at Cheeky’s changes weekly, some dishes are staples, but the revolving door of creative fare keeps patrons palates guessing and excited for what’s to come. On my initial visit a while back, I went for breakfast, and they had a dish that I was drawn to immediately. It was Poached Eggs over Duck Confit Hash that got my attention. I remember the eggs being so perfectly poached, they looked like two gorgeous oval pillows, relaxing on a rich bed of Duck Confit Hash. The next couple of times that I went, the dish was still available and I was ecstatic to indulge, although it is not on the menu now. But there’s always something new to entice those buds, such as Prime Rib Cakes, with a grainy mustard sauce, fried eggs and gremolata, and Panettone French Toast with zabaglione and cranberry pear compote, just to name a few. Another favorite for breakfast at Cheeky’s is their Bacon Flight. It is five pieces of bacon, dressed up in different flavors. You don’t have to order the whole flight, as you can have just one or two pieces, but why not have all five? It’s bacon after all! The current bacon flavors are, Applewood, Sesame, Jalapeno (my fave), Beeler Apple Cinnamon and Coffee Sugar. It’s a bacon lovers must! Their innovative creations continue through

to lunch. Their Grass Fed Burger is one of Cheeky’s staple items, and there is no question why, it is just a great burger, and the grass fed beef makes an impactful difference. Feel free to add bacon, cheese and/or avocado. The burger comes with, “can’t get enough of them” Pesto Fries. The fries are like the bacon flight, kind of a must. Other current lunch dishes include, Roasted Yam Sandwich with feta, cilantro, red onion, tomato and mayo, and Chicken Milanese with cambozola, cherry tomato, tarragon and arugula, plus many others. Cheeky’s won’t leave you parched, as they have a variety of fresh juices, and revved up drinks to enhance your foodie fun, such as their Cheeky’s Spicy Bloody Mary, Proper Champagne Cocktail, or Fresh Squeezed Blood Orange Juice, as well as many more. Every experience that I have had at Cheeky’s in Palm Springs has left me in the Yum zone. Their fresh ingredients along with their creative food focus always brings me back for more, making it a place where I enjoy going on a food adventure. Where will their food adventure take you? Check them out and see. Cheeky’s is located at 622 N Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs, 92262 For more info visit www.cheekysps.com.

BREWTALITY

S

o long story short, this week’s article was planned to be a review of Oyster Stouts. Flying Dog makes one that you can find at Bevmo or Total Wine, and I was going to tell you all about the history and origin of this very… “idiosyncratic” stout. As in, who the f*ck thought that this would ever be a thing? Why, why, why would someone ever look at an oyster and think, “You know what my Guinness needs? This terrifying looking bag of snot and salt that resembles a prepubescent face hugger with its legs pulled off. That’s what’s going to help me to enjoy the taste of beer.” No, instead of writing that glorious article, I got hungry and decided to go grocery shopping for booze, candy and lettuce, and instead I came home with one of Trader Joe’s in-house beers. Trader Joe’s was founded in Southern California 1958 as a chain of convenience stores called Pronto, the store rebranded with the familiar South Seas motif in 1967 and focused on stocking food and wine that wasn’t carried by most grocery stores at the time. Bought by the ALDI chain of discount-grocery stores in 1979, the company expanded nationwide, and currently stands at 475 locations from coast to coast. Trader Joe’s sells many items under its own private labels, which reduces the cost of the product to the consumer by eliminating the need for a wholesaler middleman. Trader Joe’s carries five different brands of house beer that are all created by contract brewers; a brewery that’s hired out to brew and package a beer for retailers who don’t want the strain and hassle of opening their own brewery. “Campanology” is the contract brewing alibi used by Octopi Brewing of Waunakee, WI,

TRADER JOE’S WEIRD BEER REVIEWS

and the company who created todays review, Every Time Buche De Noel Stout. Now, a Buche De Noel is a yule log cake and a French Christmas tradition that dates back to the 19th century. It’s this little log cake that’s to blame for the ridiculously cumbersome name of this beer. I feel like there needs to be a subtitle or at least a comma in that mouthful-of-a-name. Every Time Buche De Noel Stout says it’s brewed with coffee and cocoa nibs, which are both somewhat common ingredients in craft beer stouts. What about this product makes it taste like a Yule log cake? And why don’t I have the self-worth to go and buy myself something nice to review? I heard Total Wine is now carrying Heady Topper, but nope, here I am shopping for myself in the bargain bin again cuz I don’t deserve nice things. God, I just depressed myself. I’m not crying, you’re crying. I’m gonna go soak in a warm bath while wishing I could go back in time and get that football scholarship like I should have. Be right back...

Every Time Buche De Noel Stout – 8% ABV, Campanology Brewing Co. Appearance: The label is this bright, festive blue, with angel wings and sleigh bells and snowflakes and coffee beans across it. You know what’s not pictured? A yule log cake. What the hell guys? Talk about burying the lead. Can the art department guy not draw a fricken giant hoho with branches on it? Anyway, this beer poured a brownish-black with edges that glow amber against light, and with a thin cap of foam that dissipates quickly into bubbles across the surface of the beer. 3.5/5 Nose: My buddy Quinton is reviewing this beer with me; he sniffs his tiny snifter of stout and asks me if there’s any fruit in this beer. Dried fruit is big in the nose, followed by black licorice and the soft acidity of breakfast coffee. Almond sugar comes to

BY AARON RAMSON mind; this beer kind of smells like almond liqueur. An odd bouquet for a beer that’s supposed to be about chocolate and coffee, but still pleasant. 4/5 Taste: Sweet. Cloyingly sweet, with a flavor that tastes like Torani almond syrup. Holding it in the mouth reveals a Tootsie Roll like, artificially chocolate flavor. Not much coffee to be found, but I suppose it’s meant to be a background note that supports instead of shines. This beer finishes with an alcoholic burn, boozy and warming. “It does not mask its alcohol content well”, blinks Quinton. The artificial-flavors intensify as this beer warms, and it begins to taste quite awful. Q says, “The fact that it tastes worse as it warms doesn’t speak well of it”. 2/5 Mouthfeel: Thin and a little slick, almost oily. Not unpleasant at all. The carbonation is medium low and is the least offensive thing about this beer. 3.75/5 Overall: I really wanted to like this beer, but I also really wanted to like The Nutcracker and The Four Realms, and that shouldn’t give you a whole lot of confidence in my personal tastes. I can’t recommend this beer to you, fam, it’s a total dumpster fire. But if not heeding warning signs is your thing, it can be found at Trader Joe’s locations for a limited time at $4.99 a bomber. Can I buy some self-love with that money, so I stop reviewing crap beer? Drinking a beer full of oysters is gonna be a treat compared to this. 3.3/5

SCREENERS

NOW SHOWING: AQUAMAN Film fans were wondering if this muchanticipated film would sink or swim after the disaster of Justice League. I am happy to report it’s a fun and exciting swim. This film has the same fun, adventurous vibe that accompanied the first “Indiana Jones” movie. A great cast top-lining James Momoa, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lundgren and Patrick Wilson) along with eye popping FX flesh out James Wan’s entertaining superhero underwater action adventure from the DC Universe. Director Wan has a great eye for visuals and Momoa’s Aquaman character is dripping with charisma and dry wit. This over-thetop comic book movie meanders a lot, seems longer than necessary, is sometimes ridiculous but is generally satisfying if for no other reason than submersing the audience in a wondrous world unlike any w have seen on the big screen. Half human and half Atlantean, Arthur Curry learns he is heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people against his half-brother, Orm, who seeks to unite the seven underwater kingdoms against the surface world. Once home to the most advanced civilization on Earth, the city of Atlantis is now an underwater kingdom ruled by the power-

hungry King Orm. With a vast army at his disposal, Orm plans to conquer the remaining oceanic people -- and then the surface world. Standing in his way is Aquaman, Orm’s halfhuman, half-Atlantean brother and true heir to the throne. With help from royal counselor Vulko, Aquaman must retrieve the legendary Trident of Atlantis and embrace his destiny as protector of the deep. Don’t miss this marvelous and wondrous action adventure that is guaranteed to please even the most jaded filmgoers. The piece of popular entertainment is perfect for the

holidays. You don’t have to up to speed with your comic book lore and legend to enjoy this stunning film. The opening five minutes tell you all you need to know to drop in and enjoy this truly fantastic, fully realized world. Strong recommendation. Find the biggest screen in your neighborhood. NEW BLU FOR THE HOME THEATER: WATERWORLD (1995) The most expensive film ever made at the time of its release, Waterworld has thrilled audiences through the years with its aweinspiring action scenes, gargantuan maritime sets and groundbreaking special effects. A definitive post-apocalypse blockbuster, Waterworld stars Kevin Costner as The Mariner – a mutant trader, adrift in a dystopian future where Earth is submerged under water and humankind struggles to survive on boats and in ramshackle floating cities. The Mariner becomes embroiled with

BY ROBIN E. SIMMONS the Smokers, a gang of pirates who, led by villainous leader Deacon (Dennis Hopper, Blue Velvet), are seeking Enola (Tina Majorino, Napoleon Dynamite), a girl with a map to the mythical realm of “Dryland” tattooed on her back. Famous for both its epic scale and the controversy that swirled around its production, Waterworld is a key cult film of the 1990s, and an essential entry into the subgenre of ecologically minded blockbusters. Presented here in an exclusive new restoration, in three different cuts, and with a wealth of extra material, this highwater mark (pun intended) of high-concept Hollywood can now be enjoyed as never before. Three cuts of the film in this two-disc limited edition include a new restoration from a 4K scan of the original negative. Disc two contains a High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation of the extended US TV cut, which runs over 40 minutes longer than disc one’s theatrical cut as well as a High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation of the extended European “Ulysses” cut, which includes censored shots and dialogue. Among the extras: “Maelstrom: The Odyssey of Waterworld” is an all-new, feature-length making-of documentary including extensive cast and crew interviews and behind the scenes footage and an original archival featurette capturing the film’s production. Also of interest is “Global Warnings,” a look at the subgenre of ecologically aware Hollywood blockbusters with film critic Glenn Kenny. Arrow Films. robin@coachellavalleyweekly.com

BOOK REVIEW

A

n another year gone and it’s time to pick my book review “favorites.” It is always fun to look over the past 12 months and see the books I read and those that left a lasting impression. There are so many wonderful books and each has its merits, so it’s never an easy task to choose faves. Fiction or nonfiction, I try to find the book’s heart and soul, its significance and meaning –-- and share it with you. Here is a list of books I read in 2018 that most resonated with me and why. NONFICTION Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann – In the 1920s, the Osage Indians were some of the wealthiest people in the world. After being relocated to Oklahoma, oil was discovered and the Osage owned the mineral rights! The book explores at least 24 murders surrounding one Osage family and the investigation to uncover the killers. This history of the native people and the beginning of the FBI is gripping. The Real Lolita by Sarah Weinman – The author introduces the reader to Sally Horner, an 11-year-old girl, kidnapped and taken across the country by an opportunistic child molester and pedophile. Weinman makes a case that the character of Lolita, in the seminal work by Vladimir Nabokov with the same title, was taken from the Sally Horner incident. Nabokov denied Horner’s story had any connection to his book Lolita. I was especially intrigued by the story of Nabokov, his family and writing process. Horner’s story and its connection – true or not – to Lolita is a great conversation to have with friends or Nabokov readers. It also puts a real face to an innocent girl. Daughters Betrayed by Their Mothers by Holli Kenley – Therapist, psychologist and educator, Kenley conducts a study that features seven women

FAVORITE READS OF 2018

who have been betrayed by their mothers. The author shares her own story to better understand and explore the impact and long-term damage bad mothers have on their daughters. Of all the participating women, only two chose to have kids. The interviews are insightful, revealing, powerful and healing. Kenley now has a private practice in Rancho Mirage. FICTION White Chrysanthemum by Mary Lynn Bracht – My librarian friends at the Rancho Mirage Library recommended this book and it was my favorite fiction read this year. This compelling, well-written story revealed a shocking history I new nothing about. The story is about a young Korean girl taken from her family and island home by Japanese soldiers in 1943 and turned into a “comfort woman” or sex slave. This is wonderful historical fiction that immerses the reader in another world, culture and time. Beautiful Exiles by Meg Waite Clayton – This is a fictional story based on the real life character Martha Ellis Gellhorn, war correspondent, author, and third wife of Ernest Hemingway. Author Clayton has Gellhorn tell her own story and it is an engaging ride. I really appreciated dropping into the lives of these accomplished writers and getting a glimpse at the challenges and discipline of creating lasting work.

December 27, 2018 to January 2, 2019

There were wonderful surprises and insights into Hemingway as writer, father and partner. Gellhorn was an incredibly brave, strong and talented woman. Blown by Mark Haskell Smith – The story is about a Wall Street savant, LeBlanc, who absconds with a bunch of cash – 17 million -- for all the right reasons. Loathing the greed, dishonest games, and service to the one percent, he hopes to sail into the sunset and leave the crooks scrambling to explain. Unfortunately for our hero, they send out the big dogs to get their money back. With all that money at stake, everyone wants a piece and nothing goes right or as planned. Smith does a great job making reading not only interesting but loads of fun. If you haven’t picked up a book in awhile, start with any one of Smith’s novels. He will inform and entertain you before you know it. SELF-HELP You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero – If you need a boost to better understand your own crazy reality, Sincero gives you lots of good advice. “You are awesome” is her theme and she backs it up with good ideas and ways to rethink your path. I liked Sincero’s badass book more than Unfuck Yourself by Gary John Bishop which seemed directed at millennials. Sincero speaks to everyone in plain and simple ways that make sense so positive change can be put into action.

SAFETY TIPS

BY HEIDI SIMMONS SHORT STORIES The Largesse of the Sea Maiden by Denis Johnson – This book was published posthumously, which makes the five short first-person narrated stories even more poignant. Johnson writes these tales with the honest and blatant reality that death is inevitable and an important part of our own narrative. It is impossible to run away or hide from death. These stories share death as perfectly natural. Death is not to be feared nor is it a mystery. Death is far less bizarre than the lives we live. Thank you, Denis Johnson, RIP. *** Thank you dear readers for sharing your favorite books, providing me with suggestions and letting me know if I got a review right or not. I want to be sure to thank CVW publisher Tracy Dietlin who is an amazing human being. She is the smartest and hardest workingwoman I know, and because of her and this paper, I am allowed to celebrate books and share the joy of reading with you dear reader. As a publisher and editor, Dietlin gets how important reading is. She understands the pleasure of sitting down with a print copy and being swept away by a narrative. Dietlin is to be commended and celebrated for believing in readers and quality content. May your New Year be filled with wonderful books! heidi@coachellavalleyweekly.com (To read the complete reviews go to www. coachellavalleyweekly.com under Columns heading Book Reviews.)

START THE NEW YEAR THE RIGHT WAY!

N

ew Year’s Eve is a night to have fun and celebrate the coming year,” says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. “However, safety is a must when participating in the festivities. Whether you’re staying in and celebrating with friends and family, or you’re traveling to a party or city bash, following a few safety tips will ensure that you’re safe and sound when the clock strikes midnight, ringing in the New Year!” • Designate a Driver: If you are going to be driving New Year’s Eve, don’t drink and drive. If you have a friend who does not prefer to drink, make sure they take the wheel. You might even be on the water this New Year’s Eve. The person in charge of navigating the boat needs to be cautious, and this still applies to them! It is important to be safe on the water as well, so drink sensibly. • Be Alert: Be aware of your surroundings and how others are acting. Stay away from those who are out of control and might cause harm. Taking preventive measures is key. If someone is really intoxicated, prevent them from trying to drive or leaving with someone they do not know. It’s important to keep an eye out for each other. • Don’t Drive: If you don’t have to go behind the wheel, avoid it. More people will be driving under the influence on this particular night, so avoid a potentially dangerous accident by staying off the road. Otherwise, be alert and drive defensively. Most importantly, wear your seatbelt! Also, using public transportation is a wise option. If taking a

cab is too expensive, crashing at a friend’s place nearby is a convenient solution. • Stick Together: This way we can look out for our friends and family. Going out to parties and nightclubs means a fast-paced, crazy night; so be sure to travel in groups. Having a safety net around you in this environment is imperative. • Monitor your Alcohol Intake: A majority of people will be drinking on New Year’s Eve, and there is nothing wrong with that. Just be sure to pay attention to how much you and others are consuming. Drinking too much alcohol can have lethal affects. Be responsible. • Don’t forget about your pets! They are just as much a part of the family as everyone else. If you are using fireworks, anything with loud noises, or fire, be sure that pets are kept at a distance as well as children. None of these are a good mix. • Be careful with open flames: If you’re burning candles, incense or oil burners, remember to extinguish them before you turn in or before you leave the room they are burning in. Pay extra attention to pets and children around open flames. • Plain and simple, No Fireworks! Everyone wants to have an unforgettable night (in a good way!). By simply using some common sense, we can keep it that way. Ring in the New Year safely! Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna *Note: The information in this article was compiled from various sources.

HADDON LIBBY

T

he stock market is having its worst December since the Great Depression. While this is a great headline that grabs readers, should we fear that our economic good times are but a mirage? Could we be on the precipice of another crash like 1929 or 2008? No. As you will see below, what we face today is nothing like either of those sad economic days of the past. In getting started, you should know that the U.S. economy for 2018 is on track to log its best economic performance since Lyndon B. Johnson was president fifty years ago. To go from the best year in decades to a recession within months is a virtual economic impossibility. We can expect that things will slowdown in 2019. To keep things in perspective, we are slowing from a 3%+ rate in 2018 to something in the 2.0% to 2.5% growth rate. That level of growth is hardly the start of the next Great Depression or Great Recession. Rather than relying on logic, let’s use data and analytics to see if we should be concerned. To keep this simple, let’s look only at P/E ratios. P/E stands for the Stock Price per share divided Company Earnings per Share. Most refer to this as the PriceEarnings Ratio or P/E multiple. Companies

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

WORST DECEMBER STOCK MARKET IN 90 YEARS!

that are growing quickly often have P/E multiples that can be very high while slower growing or shrinking businesses have lower P/E multiples. Newscasts will often report that “the Dow” went up or down by some number. That number is the Dow Jones Industrial Average which tracks the performance of thirty of America’s top companies to create an index that gives us an idea as to the general health of the U.S. economy. The Dow has gone from an 18.1 P/E multiple at the start of the year to a 13.8 P/E multiple which is below the long-term average of 15.6. The S&P 500 Index includes most of the largest companies in America. The P/E multiple for this index went from 18.4 to 14.6 which is below its long-term average of 15.7. Looking at the NASDAQ Index which focuses on technology companies, the P/E multiple declined from 22.3 to 18.2. While higher than the other two indexes, this industry is growing at a faster rate than other areas of the economy. With a longterm average of 17.5, the current valuation seems fair. The big difference today that most seem to be missing is that we still have a low

DALE GRIBOW ON THE LAW

C

interest rate environment when looked at through the lenses of time. With interest rates that are still low, valuations for stocks that are seemingly fair and an economy that is on track for a solid 2019, how could we possibly be on the verge of another Recession? While this current uber-correction feels rotten, corrections like these are very important if we are to avoid the boombust cycles of the past. From a long-term perspective, this is a good thing although it doesn’t feel that way to investors when in the middle of a correction. The economy and ultimately your investment portfolio are in a lot better condition than you might think. The real risk at present relates to debt. Stay away from high debt companies that stoke their stock price with dividends and stock repurchases paid for with debt. Those stocks possess the highest risk. If you are holding high yield debt or debt with maturities longer than seven years, consider reducing this exposure quickly as interest rates will be going up and these holdings will suffer the most. For what it is worth, the average annual return for the S&P 500 over the last 90 years is 9.5%. P/E multiples tell us that

these stocks are currently valued at a slight discount to average. That sounds more like an after Christmas discount than another Recession. LEGAL REPRESENTATION OF THE INJURED & CRIMINALLY ACCUSED

CAN YOU TURN AROUND AT A DUI CHECKPOINT? hristmas and New Year’s 2019 are here. That means partying to celebrate the great 2019 I wish for all my readers. To address this Checkpoints and Saturation Patrols ramp up to meet the increased number of people who will be drinking and driving.....A word of advice, Use Uber or Lyft. They are a lot cheaper than having to call me the next morning. When you see a checkpoint as you are driving home can you avoid it? Clearly you are anxious and would not perform well on a DUI test. Is it legal to avoid the checkpoint? Drivers are not obligated to proceed through checkpoints if they can be avoided without breaking any traffic laws like illegal U Turns. DUI sobriety checkpoints are legal and not a 4th Amendment illegal search and seizure violation, if they comply with all the regulatory rules. Turning onto a side street or turning around before passing through a checkpoint is generally not against the law. Turning around should not, in and of itself, give the police a reasonable suspicion required to make a DUI stop. However, the officer may be able to stop you if he observes any driving that would be sufficient for reasonable suspicion. Thus slow or erratic driving, straddling the line or making an illegal turn could attract his attention and he then could stop your car. In the Coachella Valley, few realize we have more DUI FATALITIES...per capita, than anywhere else in California. That makes

December 27, 2018 to January 2, 2019

DUI Checkpoints and Saturation Patrols essential to save lives......the drivers and ours. A saturation patrol is a large number of law enforcement officers making their presence known by conducting stops, targeting inebriated, distracted, aggressive and speeding drivers, as well as those with seatbelt or cell phone violations....the whole nine yards of traffic violations. Drivers offered DUI tests should be cooperative and politely say their attorney is Dale Gribow who advised them not to talk without his permission. If they would please call Dale at 760-837-7500 they would be happy to talk. Explain “they have been advised these Field Sobriety Tests (FST) and breath tests at the scene are optional. If that is correct Officer, then I elect not to take them. Explain you are happy to cooperate with law enforcement and will take a blood test.” To sum up, with a DUI stop the Officer asks the driver to exit the vehicle & asks questions. Most drivers (and lawyers) don’t know the Breath Test and FST at the scene are OPTIONAL. These tests can only hurt their case. It is arguable that taking a Blood Test at the police station or hospital is preferable. Many believe with the passage of time the reading will decrease by the time the blood is drawn...........unless the driver just chugged a drink and the alcohol had not yet gotten into the blood system. The average driver is not aware that it takes

about an hour for the alcohol to go into your blood stream and an hour to come out............but now YOU DO! Remember: Silence is Golden and Handcuffs are Silver so DON’T TALK to POLICE without your lawyer’s permission. Though often referred to as a DUI criminal defense lawyer, I choose to not view my DUI clients as “criminals”. I prefer to view them, and more importantly to treat them, as good, honest people that have found themselves in a scary and unfortunate situation after screwing up. I look upon my job as protecting the Constitutional Rights of every American who drinks, drives and gets arrested for a DUI or has an ACCIDENT. I do however “Change Hats” when I SUE Drunk Drivers for damages to my Injured or Deceased (Wrongful Death) clients.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY

Week of December 27

ARIES (March 21-April 19): I suspect that in 2019 you’ll be able to blend a knack for creating more stability with an urge to explore and seek greater freedom. How might this unusual confluence be expressed in practical ways? Maybe you’ll travel to reconnect with your ancestral roots. Or perhaps a faraway ally or influence will help you feel more at home in the world. It’s possible you’ll establish a stronger foundation, which will in turn bolster your courage and inspire you to break free of a limitation. What do you think? TAURUS (April 20-May 20): On the average, a total eclipse of the sun happens every 18 months. And how often is a total solar eclipse visible from a specific location on the planet? Typically, once every 375 years. In 2019, the magic moment will occur on July 2 for people living in Chile and Argentina. But I believe that throughout the coming year, Tauruses all over the world will experience other kinds of rare and wonderful events at a higher rate than usual. Not eclipses, but rather divine interventions, mysterious miracles, catalytic epiphanies, unexpected breakthroughs, and amazing graces. Expect more of the marvelous than you’re accustomed to. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “The world’s full of people who have stopped listening to themselves,” wrote mythologist Joseph Campbell. It’s imperative that you NOT be one of those folks. 2019 should be the Year of Listening Deeply to Yourself. That means being on high alert for your inner inklings, your unconscious longings, and the still, small voice at the heart of your destiny. If you do that, you’ll discover I’m right when I say that you’re smarter than you realize. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Jackson Pollock is regarded as a pioneer in the technique of drip painting, which involves drizzling and splashing paint on canvases that lie on the floor. It made him famous. But the truth is, Pollock got inspired to pursue what became known as his signature style only after he saw an exhibit by the artist Janet Sobel, who was the real pioneer. I bring this to your attention, because I see 2019 as a year when the Janet Sobel-like aspects of your life will get their due. Overdue appreciation will arrive. Credit you have deserved but haven’t fully garnered will finally come your way. You’ll be acknowledged and recognized in surprising ways. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): As the crow flies, Wyoming is almost a thousand miles from the Pacific Ocean and more than a thousand miles from the Gulf of Mexico, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean. Now here’s a surprise: in the northwest corner of Wyoming, the North Two Ocean Creek divides into two tributaries, one of which ultimately flows to the Pacific and one that reaches the Gulf. So an enterprising fish could conceivably swim from one ocean to the other via this waterway. I propose that we make North Two Ocean Creek your official metaphor for 2019. It will symbolize the turning point you’ll be at in your life; it will remind you that you’ll have the power to launch an epic journey in one of two directions. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): I have come to the conclusion that softening your relationship with perfectionism will be a key assignment in 2019. With this in mind, I offer you observations from wise people who have studied the subject. 1. “The perfect is the enemy of the good.” —Voltaire 2. “Perfection is a stick with which to beat the possible.” —Rebecca Solnit 3. Perfectionism is “the high-end version of fear.” —Elizabeth Gilbert 4. “Nothing is less efficient than perfectionism.” —Elizabeth Gilbert 4. “It’s better to live your own life imperfectly than to imitate someone else’s perfectly.” —Elizabeth Gilbert LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In 1682, Peter Alexeyevich became co-Tsar of Russia. He was ten years old. His 24-year-old half-sister Sophia had a hole cut in the back of his side of the dual throne. That way she could sit behind him, out of sight, and whisper guidance as he discussed political matters with allies. I’d love it if you could wangle a comparable arrangement for yourself in 2019. Are there wise confidants or mentors or helpers from

20

whom you could draw continuous counsel? Seek them out. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): The body of the violin has two f-shaped holes on either side of the strings. They enable the sound that resonates inside the instrument to be projected outwardly. A thousand years ago, the earliest ancestor of the modern violin had round holes. Later they became half-moons, then c-shaped, and finally evolved into the f-shape. Why the change? Scientific analysis reveals that the modern form allows more air to be pushed out from inside the instrument, thereby producing a more powerful sound. My analysis of your life in 2019 suggests it will be a time to make an upgrade from your metaphorical equivalent of the c-shaped holes to the f-shaped holes. A small shift like that will enable you to generate more power and resonance. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Sagittarian singer-songwriter Sia has achieved great success, garnering nine Grammy nominations and amassing a $20 million fortune. Among the superstars for whom she has composed hit tunes are Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Flo Rida. But she has also had failures. Top recording artists like Adele and Shakira have commissioned her to write songs for them only to subsequently turn down what she created. In 2016, Sia got sweet revenge. She released an album in which she herself sang many of those rejected songs. It has sold more than two million copies. Do you, too, know what it’s like to have your gifts and skills ignored or unused or rebuffed, Sagittarius? If so, the coming months will be an excellent time to express them for your own benefit, as Sia did. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): A typical fluffy white cumulus cloud weighs 216,000 pounds. A dark cumulonimbus storm cloud is 106 million pounds, almost 490 times heavier. Why? Because it’s filled with far more water than the white cloud. So which is better, the fluffy cumulus or the stormy cumolonimbus? Neither, of course. We might sometimes prefer the former over the latter because it doesn’t darken the sky as much or cause the inconvenience of rain. But the truth is, the cumulonimbus is a blessing; a substantial source of moisture; a gift to growing things. I mention this because I suspect that for you, 2019 will have more metaphorical resemblances to the cumulonimbus than the cumulus. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): A hundred years ago, most astronomers thought there was just one galaxy in the universe: our Milky Way. Other models for the structure of the universe were virtually heretical. But in the 1920s, astronomer Edwin Hubble produced research that proved the existence of many more galaxies. Today the estimate is that there are at least 400 billion. I wonder what currently unimaginable possibilities will be obvious to our ancestors a hundred years from now. Likewise, I wonder what currently unforeseen truths will be fully available to you by the end of 2019. My guess: more than in any other previous year of your life. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Author Elizabeth Gilbert offers advice for those who long for a closer relationship with the Supreme Being: “Look for God like a man with his head on fire looks for water.” I’ll expand that approach so it applies to you when you’re in quest of any crucial life-enhancing experience. If you genuinely believe that a particular adventure or relationship or transformation is key to your central purpose, it’s not enough to be mildly enthusiastic about it. You really do need to seek your heart’s desire in the way people with their heads on fire look for water. 2019 will be prime time for you to embody this understanding. LIFE & CAREER COACH

BY SUNNY SIMON

PREPARE FOR A SUCCESSFUL 2019

D

uring a recent holiday luncheon with friends, we took time out to look back on the year that was and chat about our triumphs and tribulations. Discussions revolved around what we learned and how to transfer that knowledge into new year endeavors. Have you set aside some time to reflect on both your personal and career life as you look forward to a fresh start on January 1st? Before you do, you might consider an act of appreciation. The holiday season is an opportune time to express your gratitude to those who have been helpful to you. Articulating the difference they made, without asking for anything, is a powerful and authentic step in building and reinforcing your relationships. Focusing on gratitude sets the stage for a successful transition into 2019. Another exercise worth pursuing is to ask yourself what gifts from the past will you bring to your future? As you look forward to the year ahead, it’s important to think about all the growth experienced in past months that will springboard you to greater victories next year. For example, think about your “can do” attitude in taking on any challenge that comes your way. Reflecting on the past you probably found yourself in an uncomfortable situation. The moment came when you had

to summon up your fortitude and grit to accomplish a positive outcome. By doing so, you grew as a professional, pumped up your confidence level and proved your ability to succeed giving you an increased awareness of your strengths. During the course of the career year you took on many roles. Fast forward through the projects you tackled and how the actions you took set an example for others. I know, on the flip side, you cannot help but think about some setbacks that occurred. Acknowledge that you recovered. Remember, it’s not about how far you fall, what counts is how high you bounce, so stay positive. Spending a few minutes in this type of reverie gives birth to optimism for a more meaningful, productive and fruitful future. Now, that you’ve set the stage for the future, get ready for change. Establish January 1st as a start date for any behavioral changes that will propel your career. Enter 2019 giving yourself permission to do some things differently as you drive toward a brilliant new beginning. As we flip the calendar and prepare for the New Year, I wish you joy, prosperity and many successes in your 2019 career life. Sunny Simon is the owner of Raise the Bar High Life and Career Coaching. DANK DEPOT IN CATHEDRAL CITY

T

his is part two of a series showcasing the Cathedral City sister dispensaries, Dank DePot and City of Dank, their brand Cali Care, and an interview with their founder Sahak Ghaghian regarding their upcoming lounge and lab. In Cathedral City right across the bridge from Palm Springs on Ramon is what is known to the valley as the Ramon Towers featuring the Palm Springs Lanes. Since this past summer, there also has been a new feature there--Dank DePot. Upon walking in you feel a clean and comfortable experience for all ages. Their slate floors and cream walls are accented with beautiful gold framed art. Inside waits a wide open showroom with a fantastic staff of knowledgeable women waiting to consult with you about your cannabis regimen. I caught up with manager Monique to discuss Dank DePot. When did your journey in the cannabis industry begin, and what sparked it? Monique: “My amazing journey started when I walked into our sister shop City of Dank in the summer of 2018. I was taken away by the quality of their cannabis and the incredible service from the budtenders. Their senior manager, Maribel, really sparked my interest in the cannabis community and inspired me to start my own research. She is incredibly knowledgeable, compassionate and a great role model. I felt very blessed to be taken under her wing and shown how astonishing this industry really can be.” What are your goals for Dank DePot in 2019 and what can we expect to see? Monique: “I have many goals for Dank DePot in 2019, but my main focuses will be general wellness, community outreach, and focusing on customer education. I emphasize customer education to my staff. I believe this is crucial for a dispensary to run efficiently. Cannabis has helped so many people with chronic pain, insomnia, PTSD, and many other illnesses. We really want to step away from the idea that cannabis is a “bad” thing and we want to help people understand that there is a product for everyone. We were able to donate to the Riverside County Professional Firefighters Benevolent Fund as well as set up some donations for Shelter From The Storm. The cannabis community has always been portrayed as a happy, peaceful, and generous community and I want the Coachella Valley to know that we support them as much as they have been supporting us. In the upcoming year Dank Depot will open a consumption lounge as well as an infused café! We are also going to be starting our own cultivation. I am very excited for this part of the business to take off, it presents a wonderful opportunity for my staff and I to see all aspects of the industry; cultivation, testing, and sales.” How can people follow your team? Monique: “We do have an Instagram now, @ thegreenladies_, where we focus on our wonderful budtenders and the cannabis lifestyle. We also inform our customer base with product knowledge, educational videos and product reviews.” How has cannabis influenced your own health

22

and wellness? Monique: “This past year alone, my health began to decline due to my own unhappiness, anxiety, IBS, insomnia, depression and the many symptoms that are associated with it. I then began to educate myself about cannabis and the wonderful ways it could help someone like me. It’s been an amazing ride. Cannabis has helped me balance my life. I am now able to take a step back, breathe, and enjoy life as it’s coming. My anxiety is now under control and my sleepless nights are now being slumbered through. I have found that cannabis helps so much when it comes to menstruation and cramps. Considering we smoke the female plant, maybe it really was made for women! I have a very curious soul and I fell in love with this industry 100%. Cannabis is a tool that has helped my overall wellbeing and the serenity of my life, and that’s all I want for anyone considering cannabis use or active users.” What is your favorite way to use cannabis? Monique: “I love vaping, the girls have nicknamed me the vaping queen. I love the fact that you can control your high, and because it is a concentrate not much is needed, and it is not as harsh on your lungs. I believe it’s very important to educate the customers when purchasing a new device. They should know how to use it, clean it, and potentially fix a connection issue between the main components. Although, if I’m lighting up some flower, which my nighttime smoke is, usually...a good water bong will suffice!” What are your top 5 favorite products? Monique: “My first would have to be Kurvana. They were the first vaping company I found, prior to all the BCC compliances, the majority of vapes I was using were giving me headaches! I thank Sybil for the knowledge, one of City of Dank’s managers! My favorite strain from them would be Amnesia Haze, it is great for workouts! My second would have to be PAX. The device is great. It’s simple to use, good battery life, and they have an app, which is very useful if you need to lock your device, change the temperature of your hits, or just change the color. Pax partners with many companies to offer a great variety of strain options, which is what caught my attention. Third would have to be Henry’s Original flowers! It’s clean green, so many great strains and they are consistent with their testing results! I really like the fact they have pre-rolls in a pack of four that are individually packaged. These really are perfect for any situation, smoking by yourself, or with friends. Fourth, I would go with CaliCare. Quality and potency, simple! If I’m not smoking Henry’s or Kings Garden I’d say it would definitely be CaliCare packed in my bowl. Fifth, I would have to say the CBD Protabs by Level. They work wonderfully, especially if you are an active person. I’ve tried them out the day after a heavy leg day and my soreness went away completely.” Visit Dank DePot at 68031 Ramon Rd in Cathedral City to shop and meet the Green Ladies!
