TILTED AT NIGHT

A

s if there weren’t enough reasons to go to the Tilted Kilt in Palm Desert, with their hot servers, hosts and bartenders, fabulous food, drinks, pool, foosball and of the course sports. But now the brilliant minds at the Tilted Kilt have turned it up a notch and are offering the public even more with Tilted at Night.

Sure, they were opened at night before, actually until midnight. However now they will be opened even longer with their new line-up. The Tilted Kilt will be rockin until 2am on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Friday and Saturdays (with plans for Sunday to join the group in the future). Music and dancing will take the lead after 10pm on these nights giving Tilted Kilt patrons even more to come out for. And late night foodies take heart, as the new schedule includes their kitchen staying open until 1am.

It’s a progressive step forward for owner Russ Dalgetty who took over the Tilted Kilt ten months ago, after a fourteen month closure. Dalgetty has made some major improvements to the former establishment with a new kitchen, sound system and TV’s.

As well as a 3,000 sq. ft. patio and a brand new chill you to the bone AC. He wanted to improve his business even further and make the Tilted Kilt a venue where you could realistically stay and play all day if you wanted to. Watch sports in the day, and enjoy dancing and music at night.

Dalgetty went straight to the source of nightclub knowledge leaning on the wisdom of the man himself, Coachella Valley’s own, Steve Johns whom he knows through the charity that they are both on the board of, The Children’s Variety Club. Johns has well over thirty years of experience in desert nightlife and is the go to guy if you’re looking to make your day spot a nightspot.

The Tilted at Night concept kicks off Labor Day weekend on Friday, August 30th from 10pm to 2am (21 and over), with

live music by Mark Gregg & The Dude Jones Band and D.J.’s Dynamic Dave and Bob Scatch. Bring your friends and dance all night on the Tilted Kilt’s ample dance floor, and take mixing and mingling to new heights. As for the cover charge for the new launch, well, there is none, it’s free to get in

to the Tilted at Night.

Besides their new late night activities, the Tilted Kilt has an array of promotions red hot and ready for the 2013/2014 season.

The public is invited to watch the broadcast live from 2-4pm and it will also be streamed on the internet. The radio waves start on Saturday, August 31st.

Starting Wednesday September 4th will be Industry Night. It’s meant to give a special thank you to all those who work so hard in the hospitality industry, with 25% off regular priced food items, $3 well drinks and Happy Hour from 9pm to close (H.H. offered on all weekdays).

Then on Thursday September 5th, it’s time for football fans to dust off their jerseys and root for their favorite team at the Titled Kilt, as it is the place to watch football, with ice cold beers and delicious food (do I smell hot wings?), a gaggle of TV’s and the World Famous Kilt Girls. Radio station KPALM BIG 100.6 will be on hand to give out prizes, plus guests will have a chance to win a Tilted Kilt Golf Cart.

The Titled Kilt will also start opening at 9:30am on Sundays to accommodate eager football fans, and will offer breakfast all day everyday starting on August 31st.

Thursday nights will still have the ever popular Bike Night, where Bikers will enjoy 25% off regular priced food items and Happy Hour from 9pm to close (actual proof that you own a bike necessary).

GARY ARCE AND YAWNING MAN

“Yawning Man was the sickest desert band of all time. You’d just be up there in the desert, everybody’d just be hanging, partying. And they’d show up in their van and just, mellow, drag out their shit and set up right about the time the sun was goin’ down, set up the generators, sometimes they’d just go up there and drink beers and barbecue. Sometimes it would be a scene; sometimes it would be very intimate. It was very casual and loose and everybody would like, while they’re playing, everyone would just lounge around. They were kinda like a house band. It wasn’t militant like Black Flag.

It was very drugged, very stone-y, it was very mystical. Everyone’s just tripping, and they’re just playing away, for hours. Oh, they’re the GREATEST band I’ve ever seen” -Brant Bjork of Kyuss/Kyuss Lives!/Vista Chino awning Man is a desert rock icon and a tribute to the desert’s ability to groom unique music from it’s combination of desolate isolation and extreme beauty. Still, it remains a phenomenon as to why great bands like Yawning Man, home spun in our own backyard, seem to be more widely known and appreciated overseas. These musical foundations spawned other musical projects throughout the desert and the world – some bands more widely known than others, but all with a huge cult following – bands like Kyuss, Fatso Jetson, WaterWays, Ten East , Sort of Quartet, Yawning Sons, Dark Tooth Encounter, Oddio Gasser, ZUN, Queens of the Stone Age, The Perfect Rat, Across The River, and many more. As the band prepares to record a new album, sans longtime founding drummer, Alfredo Hernandez, founding member, guitar and lap steel player, Gary Arce shares his memories of and hopes on the horizon for this one of a kind, desert band that, if all goes well, will finally be launched onto the platform they deserve.

The stories read like a movie screen play, and they’re not even close to finished. This is only as much of the story, as told by Gary Arce, as I could fit into the space I have here in this one article. But these musicians, these stories all deserve to be highlighted in a comprehensive tell all, that shows how music is life’s blood to these artists who have fallen on the sword of the musicians life, gleaning from it, only some of the glory, but all of the costs, the cuts and bruises that come with the territory. In doing so, they have carved our desert into the history books of Rock and Roll.

Stuck back in the then underdeveloped La Quinta cove, a small gathering of friends, bonded by their passion for the hard core punk scene began to jam at their house.

“There was nothing really out here. There was only one cop... maybe two. It wasn’t all built up like it is now. It was pretty wild.

We used to play and the cops would walk in the house and watch us practice. They were looking for pot is what they were

doing. They heard rock music and assumed there was pot.” I asked Gary if they ever found any? He chuckled when he admitted, “Yeah... there was this lady cop and she came in and found a bong on the table. She said, ‘You know this is illegal, right?’ We just responded that it was illegal for her to just walk in our house. It was pretty crazy. It happened a lot of times, we’d be practicing and walk in from the garage and there would be some ‘vato’ sitting on the couch saying, ‘What’s up homes? I live on the other street over and I heard you guys jammin!’ Or a couple girls would come in, grab a beer out of the fridge and sit on the couch. What it was is, back then, there wasn’t a lot of gang member stuff going on and it was kind of weird... we were a rock band with long hair, Mario (Lalli) had dreads at the time... and they just figured they could walk in. Our house had kind of a reputation.”

“We were hardcore punk kids in the early 80s, going to LA watching Bad Brains, Discharge and DOA, and all the hard core bands that were touring in then. For us the hardcore punk scene ended in ‘84. All the bands we liked stopped touring and we got bored with the punk scene. So we just started jamming and playing guitar...we weren’t really influenced by anything. We were influenced by God... by what we liked.

I started liking a lot of other musicians in jazz, Coltrane and everything really. My style evolved out of a mish mash of different kinds of world music... whatever I felt.”

“In the beginning, I lived with Mario and his girlfriend and our drummer and a couple of other friends. Me and our drummer weren’t working. So we’d wake up at 9 am and start drinking beer and were just bored. So we’d go in the band room and start playing. Just guitar and drums.

I started honing my sound off of that. It was weird. I wrote a lot of the music just like that, without a bass player. That’s how come you get this sound from Yawning Man that is so unorthodox. We played like that for 6 months. I hadn’t thought about it before, and I said, ‘Hey Mario, we need a bass player.’ And that was pretty much it.

Next thing we’re playing out in the middle of the desert with a generator. Our last generator party was at Edom Hill. I went up there about a year and a half ago and was told that it was a private road and I knew that those days were pretty much over.”

“Our first paid gig was El Presidente in down town Palm Springs. We became the house band on the weekends there. We’d bring our friends down from Los Angeles to play with us. We even played Zeldas.

That was kind of a weird gig. I don’t know who the owner thought that we were, but when we started playing, the owner told us, ‘First and last song!’ I think they thought we were a dance band and here we were an all instrumental kind of Pink Floyd sounding band. I just remember these people were looking at us like, ‘What the hell is this! Where’s the disco?’ That was cool. I thought it was O.K. that we weren’t liked by that scene anyway.”

“Yawning Man went by the name Some Sort of Quartet for three albums. They worked with two labels at the time: SST who also put out the Meat Puppets, Husker Du, Soundgarden and a lot of bands like that, as well as the German label, Hot Wax crippled Dick. Then Fatso Jetson started. I went into musical hibernation and started having kids and got busy with life. Then Mario asked me to join Fatso Jetson, and that was my first time in Europe opening up for Queens of the Stone Age, back when they were still

playing little tiny bars and clubs. That was a really cool tour. Then the following year Queens of the Stone Age just exploded.

After Fatso, I started writing a lot of music again and Yawning Man reformed again. In the late 90’s we didn’t do much. 2001 we started jamming again and put out a record on a label from Madrid and started touring.

We haven’t really stopped since.”

After playing guitar since 1986, Gary is now sponsored by Ayers Guitars.

“Sponsorships kind of follow when you go to Europe. I get approached at least once a week by guys who build foot pedals and all kinds of stuff. Honestly, the whole thing with Europe happened when Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age started touring overseas, and he started mentioning Yawning Man and Fatso Jetson. So those people in Europe started contacting us.

That’s how it all started evolving. So thanks to God for Josh, John Garcia and Brant Bjork (both from the band Kyuss) or we would have never gone overseas.”

This month finds most of the tribe of Yawning Man in the studio to record a new record at Thunder Underground recording studio in North Palm Springs, engineered

by Harper Hug. The new album will be featuring both original members Gary Arce and Mario Lalli. They regrettably will not be able to bring in their original drummer Alfredo Hernandez. But they won’t be using just anyone in Alfredo’s absence.

Josh Freese who plays with Devo and The Replacements will be joining them. New music industry attention is stirring things up for the band so now is the time to pay attention to this amazing band if you never have before. The next several months are set to write another incredible chapter to these truly talented, original artists.

In closing, I asked Gary if he had any advice for his fellow up and coming musicians out there. “I’d say just be original.

Don’t be guided by other people or trends.

Just be original.”

C

omic Bill Burr might seem to some, to be an overnight success. With recent roles in AMC’s uber popular television show, Breaking Bad as “Kuby” and in the smash comedy hit movie, The Heat alongside Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, his star is definitely on the rise. But this recent success is the result of 21 years of, as Bill puts it, “climbing the stairs to the castle one step at a time.” His resume reads like the average comedian’s bucket list: He appeared in the March 26th episode of New Girl on FOX, and the Al Pacino and Christopher Walken film “Stand Up Guys”. He is an international headliner who sold out Carnegie Hall, three shows at The Sydney Opera House, and his second European theater tour. He has a Monday morning pod cast that is one of the most downloaded comedy pod casts on the web. AND, as if that wasn’t enough, Bill is a regular guest on Letterman, Conan and Jimmy Fallon. He even co-wrote a book titled “Cheat” inspired by the short film he co-wrote, co-produced and co-starred in.

Then compliments above all compliments, Bill received the prestigious Comedian of the Year Award from the Boston Comedy Festival, a true statement of appreciation from his peers. Out of everything that Bill Burr has done, performing stand up is his first and greatest love. And that is what Spotlight 29 will be bringing us, Saturday, September 7th at 8pm.

(THE HEAT, BREAKING BAD, LETTERMAN, JIMMY FALLON, CONAN) APPEARING SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 @ 8PM AT SPOTLIGHT 29 talk to him about how he started in stand up and what his future holds.

CVW: How did you get started in Stand-Up? Bill Burr: I was sort of a shy class clown.

If there were too many pretty girls or popular jocks in the room, I would tone it down. I knew the pecking order. But if it was a room full of regular people, I was more of a class clown. I have always loved standup comedians and comedic actors; if it was funny, I gravitated to it. I just thought that being funny was the best thing you could ever be. Once I decided to do it, I just took baby steps to get there. I had to get over my fear of public speaking. So every opportunity I had to get up in front of the class, I would do it. Then I got a job being on air at the college radio station behind a microphone. I got to talk to people, but I didn’t have to see them, so I baby stepped my way. Then there was a competition to find Boston’s funniest college student at the local comedy club, Nick’s Comedy Stop. So I just signed up before I chickened out. I went there, they called my name, and I went up... that’s about it. It was hang on for dear life, and then come back and do it again.

CVW: Did you ever imagine getting this far in the entertainment industry?

BB: I’ve been in this business for 21 years. Show business seemed really far away before the internet. I don’t think kids can understand that today. There were 5 or 6 major channels. If you even got on the affiliate stations, you were in the background waving. I didn’t even know how to get into it. A series of events led me to that first comedy club. I always dreamed it. I felt that I could do it, but it always seemed to be three to five years away. I’ve had a very gradual sort of assent in the business. I’ve never had that watershed you have arrived moment. I walked up to the castle one step at a time, which really works for me. I don’t think I’d have been able to handle that sort of overnight thing.

CVW: Out of everything you’re doing

now, what part of it is your absolute favorite?

BB: Stand up is my favorite and always will be. Standup is just so pure. There’s no bells and whistles. You go out, take the microphone and create something. Once you get it down, the fact that it’s just you, it becomes an advantage. In the beginning, it feels like a kind of a disadvantage, but there comes a tipping point where it becomes an advantage because it’s completely streamlined...there aren’t 40 cooks in the kitchen; there’s just one person making the meal.

CVW: After all that you’ve already accomplished, what do you see in the future?

BB: Learning how to do standup is like learning an instrument – it’s limitless. That’s what I find fascinating about it. I’m going through a growth spurt right now. 21 years into it, and I’m learning how to do some things up there that I hadn’t been able to do before- things I was only comfortable doing off stage, I’m doing on stage. I have goals that will sustain me until I’m 90, God willing I live that long. I would love to see how far I can take things. I, just in the last 5 years, have started to feel comfortable.

Usually when a comedian gets to this place, he gets sidetracked into doing other things outside of stand up. That’s so disappointing to me. I wanted to see what your next hour was going to be like. I want to try and be a master of stand up.

CVW: Can you tell me about your experience working on the set of the movie The Heat with Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock?

BB: It was an amazing experience, and I met lifelong friends. I think that is the best experience you can walk away with from something like this. I’m still in contact with a number of people form the movie, and we still try to hang out even though we all have busy lives. It was a Paul Feig movie, and by now everybody knows what that experience is like... he’s going to say action and let the camera go for 5 or 6 minute takes, just let you improvise and screw around and just have as many at bats as possible. And then he has this absolute

arsenal of comedic takes. He’s really good at giving new people a shot. It was amazing!

And Melissa McCarthy is one of the funniest human beings I’ve ever met. If she did stand up, she’d be a comedian’s comedian, and I would be standing in the back wall of the club listening every chance I’d get. She has that style which is my favorite style- she comes from a real place... not just wacky mad cap. I blew a lot of takes on that thing because she’d keep making me laugh. As much as she’s being funny, she means what she says and she’s fully invested. It’s a real pure form of comedy.

CVW: Your bio says that you hope to get married and have kids in the near future, but until then, you will continue to spend most of your mid-afternoons sitting in your sweat pants learning AC/DC songs on your SG. What kind of woman are you looking for?

BB: (said chuckling) Someone who’s a good enough person who can actually tolerate me.

As our conversation closed, we bantered back and forth a bit. I promised not to let it leak what a nice guy he was as it might spoil the image. He replied, “I would like people to know I’m a nice guy. People confuse me with my act and think I just blow up at stuff.”

Then he began to thank me for helping him promote his show in El Paso. (Poor guy – it’s tough being in demand). When I assured him that I would be more than happy to but our paper’s reach was geared more toward his Palm Springs show. He laughed and said, “You should print that... that’s funny.”

I agree with Bill Burr; being funny is one of the greatest things to be and this guy brings it with the best of them. IN THE TRENCHES WITH WARRIORS 4 CHRIST

I

t’s Friday night in the Coachella Valley, and while most people are getting ready for a weekend of entertainment and relaxation, the diligent souls of Warriors 4 Christ are just starting their rounds across the valley to help those in need.

I met them in Coachella at the Am/Pm off of 48th Ave, a meeting place for them as they continue their night’s mission. They had started earlier in the evening, with the first stop being in Mecca and then they work their way west through the valley to the cities of Coachella, Indio, Thousand Palms and Cathedral City. They travel to places where they know the homeless will be, under bridges and special camps. They deliver food, water, clothing and hygiene packs.

It was a congregation of a half dozen cars or so, and about 20 to 25 volunteers (sometimes they have up to 40) including children ready and willing to help the less fortunate, and spread the word of God. The group is led by Pastor Joel Gonzalez, a man who knows first-hand the perils of being homeless, enduring it himself for many years.

He had hit hard times back in 2001, finding himself living under a bridge off Golf Center Pkwy. He struggled with substance abuse and financial hardship, but eventually became sober when he found God. He knew he needed to create a new life for himself and

wanted to give back to the community, to share his faith with people who are starving, both spiritually and nutritionally. He found his calling in every sense of the word and went to Bible School and became a pastor.

He started Warriors 4 Christ about 4years ago, and along with his wife Monique, they armed themselves with a bible, water, and sandwiches and hit the streets to lend a hand to those who needed it the most.

They are a grass roots non-profit organization and have grown since their initial inception helping over 200 people a week. The group is solely funded by private donations and their own money, and are affiliated with CV River of Life Church and

by Pastor Jeremy Estrada who usually joins them on their weekly missions. They have received donations from local businesses including, Dollar Heaven, Electric Car Distributors, Billy Q’s Pizza and CBS 2 News.

Some of the volunteers are challenged by their own financial set-backs, requiring the aid of food stamps to put food on the table. But what is remarkable is that despite their own strife, they still give of their own supplies, guided by their faith in God. After meeting Pastor Joel, we left the Am/Pm and caravanned to the next stop.

We went to visit Pastor Joel’s longtime friend, Joaquin Escobar Ontivaros, who literally lives in a boat in the middle of the

desert. It is a site to see. Ontivaros has an indelible significance to Pastor Joel, as Ontivaros helped him when he was at a very low point in his life. Pastor Joel visits him throughout the week, bringing him food, water and ministering through the bible.

There are actually two boats on the property, beached on the sand amidst old tires and other debris, not far from the Indio canal. The owner of the land has given permission to Ontivaros to live there; along with his friend Jose Avila and two dogs. For them, it is home.

An American flag waves proudly off one of the boats, a reminder of how much love they have for this country. When the food was given to Ontivaros, Pastor Joel set his sights on the night’s sermon as the volunteers gathered in a circle. After the service, they sang a song and then a few of the volunteers read passages from the bible that they wanted to share. Everything was translated in Spanish for those who needed guidance through the language barrier.

Dusk soon turned into night, and all that was left were the beams of light from our flashlights. It was inspiring to see the dedication of these people, who traverse into night and walk in the middle of the desert to help…just to help and talk about God. They never complain about the heat, the sweat or the sand in their shoes. As Jon

Wright said, who is a big part of Warriors 4 Christ helping them with community relations, “When you go home tonight, you will be that much more grateful for what you have,” and he was right.

We parted ways after leaving the home of Ontivaros. For me, the night’s mission was complete, but the Warriors still had work to do. Their next stop was an encampment just up the street, eager and hungry people awaited them, hungry for food, and hungry for spirituality.

The goal of Warriors 4 Christ is to change the social stigma that plagues the homeless.

Pastor Joel was clear to point out that they are not all drug addicts and degenerates. A great number of them are just out of work, looking for a way to get back on track. There are many who just live in their cars. It’s scary to realize, but many people are just a paycheck away from being homeless, or as Wright calls it “Houseless”.

The organization looks to the future, and has plans to purchase a van to help transport the “Houseless” to job interviews, making it easier for them to move forward in their lives. They also want to spread their work to other desert cities including Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Yucca Valley and even all the way up to Bakersfield, as Pastor Joel explained, “These cities neglect that they have a problem.”

But with their bibles in hand which they carry like swords, Warriors 4 Christ will take on these problems head on, providing the less fortunate with food, water, friendship and most importantly to them, the word of God. suburb of Palos Park, Ill., young poet Bianca Goutos wrote a piece about her future.

She was going to be a television reporter, work in California and her name would be Bianca Rae. “I talked about what my life would be in Hollywood and I thought that ‘Bianca Rae’ sounded like the right name for me,” she said recently on the drive home from work earlier this week.

She had just pulled the early morning shift at KESQ-TV3 where she is an on-air reporter. Usually a dayside reporter, at 1:30 p.m. she had finished a shift that started at 4 a.m., and that was after returning late to the valley from a journalism conference in Orange County. “I only got about three hours sleep,” she says. “But I’m off and get to go home and take a nap with my dog. It’s not so bad!”

At only 24, Rae is well on her way to achieving her early professional goals, even if it has meant leaving behind her large, close Greek/Italian family in Illinois.

“My sister is getting married soon and we’re expecting 500 people!” she says.

and drama while in high school and whose friends all expected her to have her own talk show one day. “I was always asking questions,” she says. “And I have tendency to talk really fast.”

She graduated from the University of Missouri’s journalism school in Columbia, Mo. The school owns KOMU-TV8, the local NBC affiliate. Students like Ray gain professional experience and she worked for three years honing her skills as a reporter and anchor at the station. “It was an affiliate and so we had to be professional,” she said.

“It was great training.”

Somewhat of an overachiever, in addition to the journalism Rae also majored in Spanish and minored in sociology, and spent summers in Los Angeles interning at KTLA-5 in 2009 and 2010, and E! Entertainment and Fox Sports in L.A. in 2010.

KESQ is Rae’s first job after finishing her degree. Before becoming one of the station’s bilingual reporters in July 2011, Ray’s career path was as a features/entertainment reporter. “I never thought I liked breaking news,” she says. “I was more interested in the fun stories. I didn’t want to be a (stoic) reporter who never shows any emotion.”

That changed shortly after Rae arrived in the valley when she was sent to a shooting scene in Indio and had to talk to the victim’s girlfriend. “At one point she was crying and I stopped the interview and talked to her to calm her down,” she recalls. “When we finished my photographer yelled at me for being unprofessional. But I’m a human being first and foremost and I don’t see why I can’t be a professional person but still be caring, too.”

With two years under her belt, she’s “fallen in love with news,” she says.

Sometimes she gets to see the results of the stories she covers. Like the apartment fire where one man lost everything he owned.

“There were so many people calling me at the station who wanted to offer him help,” she says. “Since they had no way to contact him I became the facilitator and relayed all the messages to hm. That’s the power of media and I was happy to play a part in it.”

August 29 to September 4, 2013 Another piece sent Rae to the Indio Animal Shelter, a place that needed help, which led to her volunteering at the shelter.

It’s where she fell in love with Jack, the first male in her life.

After months of cuddling Jack while he waited for a family, and thinking about adopting him, another dog was put in his cage. “When I came in that day he looked so miserable,” she says. She called mom back home about the dog. “My mom said ‘you better adopt that dog before someone else does’.”

It was a momentous decision for Ray, but one that has led to her founding “Faith, Hope, and Pups” benefit to raise money for Coachella Valley shelter animals.

She’s also has a human relationship, she says. “His name is Ryan and we’ve been together for a year. But Ryan knows that Jack comes first and he accepts that,” she adds.

This first job has taught Ray a few things about herself. “I’ve learned that I want to find a way to bring more humanity to the news stories that I cover,” she says.

She’s also learned that although she misses her family and all the celebrations that go with being part of a large extended clan, coming to California has been an empowering experience for her.

“I’ve wanted to come to California since I was little,” she says. “To do that I had to make the sacrifice being with my family. But I’ve learned that I can be on my own and that I’m OK being on my own. Unfortunately, it also means that I have to do my own laundry.”

TO DRIVE-THRU OR NOT TO DRIVE-THRU

F

ast food: Go in or drive-through? With all the challenges we face in a day, this should not be a complicated decision.

But for Palm Desert residents it is. For 30 years, the city has had a zoning ordinance restricting fast food restaurants to essentially “go-in” only. In 1996, the city amended the ordinance to create a Freeway Commercial Overlay Zone District allowing fast food drive-through along the Palm Desert exits of Interstate 10. Now, once again, Palm Desert residents will need to decide if fast food drivethrough fits into the city’s future.

“Drive-through is an important convenience today,” said Dick Shalhoub, McDonald’s franchise owner. Shalhoub has 17 McDonald’s in the Coachella Valley.

Excluding mall and Walmart McDonald’s, all of them have drive-through except the Palm Desert location on Highway 111 in the Palms to Pines Shopping Center. “Palm Desert is the valley’s retail hub. Citizens, working folks, tourists, go through the city everyday and we want to be respectful of their time and busy schedules.”

Along the Highway 111 corridor, from Date Palm Drive in Cathedral City, to Adams Street in La Quinta, for a stretch of nearly 11 miles, there are no fast food drive-throughs. There are only 20 traditional McDonald’s (sans drivethrough) left in the entire state of California.

Up to seventy percent of McDonald’s products are sold via drive-through.

Shalhoub has lived in the CV since 1983.

He raised his family here. His son and daughter both graduated from Palm Springs High School. He has been here long enough to see the valley grow and change as he built McDonald’s valley-wide.

The Palms to Pines McDonald’s was originally built in 1975. Shalhoub purchased the franchise in 1984, which now needs to be remodeled and updated. So in June, Shaloub and his McDonald’s team met with Palm Desert City Manager John Wohlmuth, Mayor Jan Harnik and Councilmember Bob Spiegel about his plans for the ageing building to see what it might take to add an “inconspicuous” drive-through at the

location that would not be visible from Highway 111.

At the following City Council meeting in July, Councilmember Bob Spiegel asked staff to place an item on the August agenda that would eliminate the long-standing prohibition on fast food drive-throughs in the City of Palm Desert.

Last Thursday, city staff had the issue on the agenda. They wanted direction from the Council regarding potential expansion of the areas in which drive-through restaurants would be permitted within the City of Palm Desert.

Staff included three options: 1. Initiate a zoning ordinance allowing drive-through restaurants citywide (allowed everywhere).

2. Initiate a zoning ordinance amendment to allow drive-through restaurants in additional, clearly defined locations (such as north of Frank Sinatra, on Highway 111, etc).

3. Make no change to the zoning ordinance regarding drive-through restaurants.

Shalhoub briefly spoke during the comments section saying technology in the fast food industry has changed to be far more efficient. He emphasized time, saying it was precious, and that drive-through was the best distribution of their products. He said the drive-through at that Highway 111 location would increase sales, generating tax revenue for the city and that the design requirements would make the area a little nicer and more “modern.”

In opposition, a woman from the Envision Palm Desert commission commented that she felt that Palm Desert has been a leader when it comes to “recycling and golf cart use and Art in Public Places.” She said drivethroughs don’t foster a sense of community, and it would be a shame to expand drivethroughs citywide. She said the group is very concerned about sustainability and suggested the council look into the emissions aspect of idling cars at fast food restaurants.

During Council’s comments, Spiegel said the reason he wanted it on the agenda was to make it easier and convenient for the residents. Spiegel said, “A woman with a

lot of little kids doesn’t want to try to get out of her car, and go into McDonald’s with those kids. She wants to drive-through, pick up the sandwiches, take them home, and the French fries and the soda, and let the children eat. What’s wrong with that?”

He finished his comments on the subject by saying, “It’s nothing criminal. It’s a convenience. That’s the reason why I asked to put it on the agenda.”

Mayor Pro Temp Jean Benson was part of the decision 30 years ago and couldn’t see how lifting the ban would enhance the city in any way. She said she thought it was sad that family values had “decreased so much that families have to eat in the car.” Benson added that she drives out to the I-10 when she wants fast food, and whether there’s new technology with drive-throughs, it didn’t interest her at all. Benson ended her comments, “I see no reason at all to change it.”

Councilmember Susan Marie Weber commented that she uses drive-through and also has to drive across town using more fuel than if she were idling. She said that today’s quick service restaurants are lovely, with drive-through, dine-in and patios. She said the world has changed. It’s a 24/7 world with people working two or three jobs and the Council should respect their needs for ease and quickness. She mentioned businesses coming in and the need to be competitive with other cities.

Weber was confident the city could keep its high building standards with drive-through.

“There are lots of us out there, lots of people out there, that need this convenience.”

Councilmember Van Tanner began his comments saying the reason for the “commission” was to get opinions about sustainability and it would be an insult to those who serve, to not get their response.

“I’m not saying it’s good or bad. I need to be convinced one way or the other.” He finished by saying he wanted to get more response and wait to hear from those people who potentially use them [drive-throughs].

Mayor Jan Harnik agreed with Tanner, saying she wanted to respect the 120 valuable

community members who volunteer their time and have been working for the last six months. She wants to allow them to come up with conclusions and present them to the Council. Harnik thought a decision should be in by April or May. She added that many residents were still out of the valley who should be included in the discussion and the Highway 111 Business Committee, currently forming, should be allowed to way-in as well. Harnik concluded by saying, “For us to take one little piece out of the Land Use and determine it tonight -- I don’t believe it’s the right thing to do -- I think it would not be a prudent way to act.”

Tanner made the motion to continue the conversation until the Council has more information from the Envision Palm Desert.

Surprisingly, Spiegel seconded the motion.

Benson was the only member to vote against the motion. So the issue now goes to the recently formed Envision Palm Desert.

Who is it that will decide fast food drivethrough? Envision Palm Desert is made up of volunteers from the Palm Desert community. It is a “commission” made up of committees to help produce a communitywide vision for the city’s next two decades.

This super committee includes Economic Development, Land Use, Education, Tourism and Marketing, Energy and Sustainability, Parks and Recreation, Transportation, Arts and Culture and Public Safety.

Envision’s job is to help build a strategic plan by contributing creative and forward thinking ideas that reflect a shared desire for the future of Palm Desert. The question is: Will they envision fast food drive-through?

Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce CEO Barbara DeBoom is aware of the debate. “We will look at the pros and cons of each side,” she said. “The Board of Directors would make the decision if they were to choose one or the other. But we’ll remain open minded and take in all opinions.” DeBoom pointed out that the city already has drive-through banks and pharmacies. She added, “If this is the most challenging debate for Palm Desert, then that’s pretty good.”

There is no doubt that the McDonald’s location at the Palms to Pines Shopping Center is ideal for a drive-through: It is nicely set back and traffic signals allow for easy accesses in all directions. Certainly a new state-of-the-art restaurant would enhance the area and fit in well with the surrounding businesses in the center.

For Shalhoub, drive-through meets the needs of the handicapped, senior citizens, families and those with busy schedules.

He respects the time of his customers and their changing demands. Shalhoub said, “We want to be good neighbors. The conversation is important and it’s good to get people involved.”

W

hat the hell has happened to Michael Franti? Michael Franti was born in Oakland, California to an Irish-German-French mother and an African American father. He was adopted by a Finnish couple who already had biological children, as well as two adopted African American sons.

During his high school days, Michael Franti discovered poetry. He bought a used bass and taught himself to play. He began his musical career with the Beatnigs, a group that fused Hardcore Punk and Industrial Hip Hop. Franti and Rono Tse broke away from the from the Beatnigs and formed The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy. The Bay Area Rap collective gained national exposure by touring with U2.

By the early ‘90s, Franti struck out on his own, forming Spearhead. The band was an amalgam of all his musical influences: Rap, Punk, Jazz, Reggae and Ska. It was also a showcase for his growing political conscience.

Capitol Records released Spearhead’s 1994 debut, Home, as well as their sophomore effort, Chocolate Supa Highway in 1997. As the ‘90s came to a close, the band created their own label, Boo-Boo Wax. Because Capitol retained the rights to the name Spearhead, they became Michael Franti & Spearhead.

Their 2000 release, Stay Human, railed against political mass media monopolization,

the prison industrial complex and corporate globalization. Pretty heavy stuff. But it was their 2003 album, Everyone Deserves Music, struck the perfect balance between the political and the personal.

It was like Sly & The Family Stone’s There’s A Riot Going On meets the Clash’s London Calling. A brilliant symbiosis that challenged the listener lyrically, even as the music urged you (in the immortal words of Rap philosopher, Mystikal) “to shake ya ass.”

Franti & Spearhead followed up three years later with the incendiary Yell Fire.

The record was inspired by Franti’s travels in Baghdad, Israel and the Gaza Strip.

Virulently anti-war, never had protest music seemed so danceable.

Franti took his fascination with Reggae one step further with 2008’s All Rebel Rockers. Produced by Reggae progenitors Sly & Robbie, the album is steeped in loping rock steady riddims. Joyful and fun, the album maintained its edge of social conscience.

Michael Franti & Spearhead were never superstars, but they were moderately successful. In 2010, a beer company employed Franti’s infectious love song, “Say Hey (I Love You)” in a national ad campaign.

That raised their profile considerably. The band that had built their reputation as musical political activists, were suddenly

being marketed as a feel-good party band.

Toward the end of that year, Franti released The Sound Of Sunshine, (ironically, distributed by Capitol Records).

The album was awash in good vibes and “don’t worry, be happy” platitudes. It was a crushing disappointment for longtime fans.

Naturally, it sold well.

Most fans hoped …Sunshine was an aberration. Hopefully, the next album would be back on track. Unfortunately, All People is chock-a-block with party anthems, devotional hymns to babymaking and generic messages of peace and understanding. It’s as though Franti went down to the crossroads and made a deal with the Corona-devil!

The album opens with the bubbly title track. The melody shares DNA with Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough.”

It’s all super hand-clappy and rave-tastic.

Whereas Franti once peppered his lyrics with references to Istanbul and Halliburton, now he name-checks Bonnaroo, Glastonbury and Coachella, and rhymes that with a nod to Rhianna’s Umbrella song. Maybe he couldn’t find anything to rhyme with Kardashian.

On two tracks Franti collaborates with The Matrix, the hit factory production team responsible songs by Top 40 pop priestess’ like Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne and Katy

Perry. “11:59” weds a stutter-step rhythm and plaintive piano to lyrics that angle for a doomsday booty call.

“Closer To You,” is more of the same.

Kinetic synth fills accent Franti’s smooth lines of seduction… “It’s half past lonely.. I feel closer to God when I’m closer to you.”

If this album has a unifying thread, it is the preponderance of simplistic, generic lyrics. Maybe Franti’s real agenda is crafting songs that can be licensed for commercials.

“Life Is Better With You,” could be used to shill Coca-Cola. The loping “Show Me A Sign” opens with this T-Mobile centric couplet…

“Send me a picture on your telephone.”

“I’m Alive (Life Sounds Like)” is the perfect anthem for the Pepsi Generation.

A smorgasbord of shite, the track includes Peter, Bjorn & John-style whistling and pays homage to Train’s mediocre “Hey Soul Sister.” It panders with lines like “You be Bonnie and I’ll be Clyde/Like John and Yoko, Ice-T and Co Co, Like Jay Z and Beyonce/ Come be my fiancé.” Blecchh.

A couple of melodies seem uncomfortably familiar.“Life Is Better With You” almost replicates Green Day’s “Good Riddence (Time Of Your Life).” While the tropical “Earth To Outer Space” bears more than a resemblance to “Mambo #5,” (the oily Lou Bega version, not the Perez Prado original).

The rest of the selections here are equally tedious and disappointing. The album closes with “Say Goodbye,” which includes this philosophical nugget.. “I wasn’t born yesterday, but I remember the way things used to be.” Aside from the fact that it makes no sense grammatically, it’s depressing. Longtime fans also remember the way things used to be, when Franti was completely engaged in a creative career of music and activism.

That title is completely apropos. Most listeners should be ready to say goodbye.

All People is the perfect companion to a frat party, in fact the album should include a complimentary beer-bong. Michael Franti could have positioned himself as the American Bob Marley. Instead, he seems comfortable kicking off his shoes and pitching camp with Jimmy Buffet and Jack Johnson. What a waste.

“I’ve known Joey about three years since he moved here. I met him socially and we

started talking and because he spent a lot of time in England, back in the day doing shows there, he knew all the English Rockers that I knew, so we became close friends,” said Keith McCormick. “If we can fast forward to June the first this year, we were producing a free concert under the Marilyn Statue that we do for the City every year. I asked Joey if he would do a celebrity drum appearance for me and he agreed to do it, so we billed it that way. Over a thousand people showed up and gave him a standing ovation.

“He played with an Elton John Tribute Band and did “Benny and the Jets” and “Honky Tonk” and as soon as he got off the stage, he was surrounded by people wanting him to sign autographs. The following morning, he came up to me and gave me a big hug and said, ‘Keith, you made me a Rock Star again!’ On Monday he was out on Palm Canyon Drive having coffee and telling people about doing the concert and getting picked up in a limo, just like the old days. He was really a nice guy. I think it is great they are doing the tribute concert, he would love the attention.”

“Joey was funny, kind and always wanted to be a part of anything going on,” said David Ross of Ross Management and Productions.

“He tried to help me with a benefit concert for the Well in the Desert not long before he died. In which Joey ironically requested

the band to be called The Joey Covington All-Star Band. I began the hard tedious task of getting a venue, tickets and advertising.

It started with the great help of Brian Michaelz at Michaelz Media. He got us the live streaming, created the web-site, promo videos, etc.”

“I met Joey over 25 years ago and had an opportunity to work with him on several projects,” said Jay Gordon. “He was a great drummer and knew how to play to a song.

He was a pocket player. Joey will be missed by everyone who ever knew him.” Then Gordon proceeded to tell me one of the many funny stories and experiences he had with his friend. Hopefully he will share a story or two during the show.

“The best thing I can say about Joey is that, at the time I met him back in 1990 is, every time he would come to see me, he always brought my son, Nigel, a little toy or something interesting for him to play with,” said Steve Beckmeier. “That kind of defined him as a person to me. He was the most warm hearted, laid back guy I knew; he always had a smile on his face and good things to say about people.”

“Joey was one of the most down to earth guys you would ever meet, even with all his fame, that was the last thing he would talk about,” said Roxanne Evaro. “You almost had to pry it out of him. But once he got started, he was a wonderful story teller.” She would often perform for Covington while he sat at his reserved table at Sammy G’s, one of his most favorite places. He would go there almost every Thursday, Friday and Saturday to enjoy the music of Jimmy and Jerry Evaro.

“Jimmy and I loved Joey like a brother.

We always talked about music and enjoyed listening to his stories,” said Jerry Evaro. “To this day I still get choked up thinking about him, especially when we look at the table he sat at every weekend.”

“Joey was always writing music,” said Lauren Taines. “I will be carrying out all of the plans we had to release the project we were currently working on before the accident.” She is planning to release “The Best of Joey Covington” and intends to carry on with “his musical legacy.”

PET PLACE OPERATION INDIO ANIMALS: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

ianca Rae, KESQ and CBS Local 2 Reporter, as chairperson of Operation Indio Animals lent her voice in the media to help, and worked with Loving All Animals to hold weekly off site adoption events. Valerie Katzz, local radio and television personality, took an Indio dog on CBS Local 2 television news every Wednesday morning, and together they charmed the audience.

The CV Weekly magazine featured the Indio animals, exposing them to a large readership who otherwise would never have seen them. Many were adopted after being viewed in this Pet Place column.

I can’t even begin to mention the names of the dedicated Indio shelter volunteers who fostered animals, took them to events, and arranged for rescues and transports as far away as Canada. One Indio shelter volunteer had mixed emotions as she surveyed the almost empty

shelter. She commented, “It’s haunting to look at the empty kennels. I wonder how all the animals adopted from here are doing now. I’m concerned that the county shelter has limited space which could mean more animals will be put down. We need a better shelter system with people who are genuinely dedicated to the welfare of the animals. It’s been a great experience volunteering at this shelter and meeting all the people from the rescue groups who go out of their way to help animals. I encourage people to adopt from a shelter.

In the beginning, a shelter dog might be timid, but given a chance, shelter dogs are the best dogs.”

Private no-kill shelters continued to help.

The Pet Rescue Center in Coachella, a model for private shelters, has rescued Indio dogs for many years, and they continue their efforts to help homeless East Valley animals.

Christina Madruga at the Center is now pulling dogs from CVAC. Now for the good news! As of August 27, only 1 dog named Boris remained at

the Animal Care Center of Indio. Save A Pet private shelter in Desert Hot Springs signaled their commitment to take in any remaining dogs. Boris, the handsome fellow pictured here, will soon make his way to Save A Pet where he has the guarantee of a new home. All the cats were adopted or taken in by private no-kill rescue groups who will find homes for them. Last week Pretty Good Cat came to take in 7 more cats. None of the Indio animals will be transported to the Thousand Palms county shelter where their chances for adoption are a roulette wheel of chance.

Lindi Biggi, Loving All Animals President, kept our team motivated to get every Indio animal adopted or to a private rescue. Lindi sums up the results, “It is amazing to go from over 200 animals down to one dog that will now go to Save A Pet. Jose Mercure, shelter director, and Bianca Rae did a wonderful job orchestrating this community effort to find homes for these animals.” I want to personally add that the Animal Care Center of Indio improved dramatically when Jose Mercure became shelter director last year.

What will become of the empty shelter building? The building on Van Buren Street looks like a relic of times past, the vacant kennels now empty and silent where the wail of barking dogs once permeated the air.

Some say the structure should be bulldozed, as needed repairs would be costly. Others would like to see it turned into a low cost spay and neuter clinic. Economics and politics, and hopefully a desire to improve the welfare of animals, will weave a solution in the years ahead.

Operation Indio Animals is a victory for the creatures abandoned by their first families who now have a second chance at a forever home. But the battle is far from over. The steady stream of homeless animals coming into the already crowded county Coachella Valley Animal Campus has only increased with the new Indio additions. Some adoptable animals end up euthanized. CVAC is offering incredibly low adoption rates through August, so now is the time to adopt. The effort now must shift to “Operation Coachella Valley Animal Campus”. We can’t just look to government and public operated shelters to solve the homeless pet problem. The citizens of Indio and the entire Coachella Valley need to care about their companion animals and make their voices heard for those who have no voice.

CLEAR LAKE WINES: A HIDDEN SECRET NO LONGER

L

ake County, Ca.—Reporting to you from the beautiful surroundings of Clear Lake Oaks, and inside the Tasting Room of Shannon Ridge Wines, I’m pleased to alert our desert community to the “new” wine country destination where the air is pristine and the volcanic soil radiates the grape vines with energy that are producing world class wines.

Lake County is ensconced midway between the Pacific Coast and the Central Valley in Northern California where the famed Hwy 29 from Napa Valley reaches north and travelers from either Mendocino or from Interstate 5 can ride Hwy 20. It’s about two hours north of both Sacramento and San Francisco. Home to Clear Lake which is the largest freshwater lake in California with 68 square miles of surface area and more than 100 miles of shoreline, it’s been coined the “Bass Capital of the West” and may hold more fish per acre than any other lake in the U.S. And vino lovers, take note: Lake County is home to 32 wineries that are producing some of the most vibrant wines in California.

The fact that Lake County has the cleanest air in California, as certified by the States Air Resource’s Board, adds to the fact that this is the wine vacation spot to visit and enjoy.

In mid-August, there was not one traffic snag around the lake and on the roads to the various wineries & vineyards. It reminds me of traveling peacefully through Napa Valley 35 years ago—but with a huge lake by the side of things!

It has an incredible history. According to geologists and physical anthropologists, the Pomo Native Americans have been inhabiting this area for four thousand years before the rise of the Egyptian civilization.

Actually this is one of the oldest wine destinations in our state. In pre-prohibition times there was more wine acreage in Lake County than below in Napa County.

So many Zinfandel vines were torn down with pear and walnut trees replacing them. Indeed, Lake County is currently the

largest supplier of premium fresh pears in California. And the good news is that the vineyards are continually coming back with great ambition.

And the “hidden secret” is that for the past few decades so many of the adjoining wine producing counties, such as Napa, Sonoma, and Modesto, have been sourcing grapes from Lake County for their wines. It’s a good bet that most you vino lovers have already enjoyed wine from this immaculate terrain. Remember Guenoc Estate Wines with the cameo portrait of the original owner and vintner, the famed actress Lillie Langtry, on the bottle? That winery sits in south Lake County and was established back in the 1880s.

The basic wine news is this: Nearly 8,400 acres of vineyards grace the Lake County hillsides, valleys, terraces, and mountain ridges with the majority of vineyards at 1,500 ft. and above. And the wineries are selling less grapes out-of-county and keeping the juice for their own bottling.

High-elevation vineyards enjoy both higher ultra-violet light levels which promote concentrated flavors and dramatic day-to-night temperature swings, which retain acidity and produce wines that deliver both intensity and balance. The summers are drier, winters colder and the vines suffer much less from pests. Thus, Lake County ranks among the lowest in pesticide use.

Specifically, Shannon Ridge is Certified Farm Sustainable in their vineyard management.

We were invited guests at the Shannon Ridge Vineyards & Winery experiencing the vineyards at altitudes of 2,100 to 2,400 feet above sea level on steep mountain ridges that are cooled by steady winds off Clear Lake and from the higher peaks just north of us. The lean, rocky volcanic soils make the vines produce small berries with concentrated flavors of delicious high mountain fruit.

When vintner and owner Clay Shannon spied out the property for the first time in 1995, he recorded, “There is a stunning beauty of the ridge. To the south, you see

the deep blue waters of Clear Lake sheltered by the dormant volcano, Mount Konocti. To the north, snowcapped mountains loom above, and all around us brick-red rocky soils. The landscape is rugged and we’re surrounded by wildlife.”

“In addition to the ducks, geese, deer, raccoons, quail, golden eagles, wild turkey, chipmunks and bobcats that roam regularly, we’ve spotted bald eagles, a mother bear and her cubs and mountain lion tracks!”

Well—we were just there and things haven’t changed much, just a bunch more vineyards with glorious fruit.

The 2012 Shannon Ridge, Lake County Chardonnay High Elevation Collection is one of the best California Chards for the price. This wine is all Chardonnay except for 4% inclusion of Sauv Blanc. The grapes for this wine were grown in high elevation

mountain vineyards at up to 2,400 feet. And one can taste a magnificent fresh & elegant multi-layered wine with great complexity— loved the pear and green apple notes. The wine was barrel fermented in American oak and a portion was put through malolactic fermentation to help create a rich fullness.

What’s unique about this wine is that it finishes with some enchanting red & green pepper notes! Talk about a great food wine.

And it’s at a reasonable price of $22 at the Winery Tasting Room; incredibly, you can find this wine at Pavilions here in Rancho Mirage on sale for only $7.95 when you buy a 6-pack (it’s that 30% and 10% discount deal they’ve got going).

The 2010 Single Vineyard Home Ranch Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon is the type of delicious mountain Cab that Napa is famous for—but remember, we’re in mountain high Lake County: Deep garnet in color with aromas of ripe Bing cherries, dark berry and vanilla with a palate of blackberry, cherry and vanilla oak that’s bold, rich, well balanced with a long elegant finish. Ask for it at Desert Wine & Spirits, in Palm Springs for around $22. Enjoy!

KITCHEN KITCHEN HOSTS CELEBRITY SLIM MAN COOKING LESSONS

adget Gal Jan Boydstrom of Kitchen Kitchen has introduced an exciting new twist to the Cooking Lesson/Dinner genre with the introduction of the ‘Slim Man Cooks’ events to be held monthly at Kitchen Kitchen located at 74945 HWY 111, Indian Wells, CA. Food and Song, combined with a little humor from the Slim Man himself make this a unique event perfect for a group of 10 or up to 20 people.

I had the pleasure of attending the first

monthly event. It was also my first cooking class and I have to say, I learned a lot. It started with some appetizers made by their resident Chef Woody including his amazing bruschetta topped with a special balsamic vinegar, the best I’ve ever tasted. He also gave us a sampling of his Heirloom tomato salad with Crater Lake Vodka sauce. These are 2 of the same appetizers he made for “Jazz Tastings” a concert event I did last

He was nominated for “International Jazz Vocalist of the Year at the Canadian Jazz Awards. He performs at jazz festivals and does concerts all over the country. He was the closing act last year at the Catalina Jazz Trax Festival and was a featured performer at the Temecula Wine and Music Productions

He’s been dubbed “the voice of smooth”. He performed at the beautiful Rivera of Palm Springs in the ‘Starlight Lounge” on Sunday with “Slim Dudes” Patrick Ready on drums and Tateng Katindig on keyboards both national caliber musicians who work with the some of the top artists in the smooth jazz industry.

In addition to recording Slim Man is known for his cooking skills in creating “Healthy Italian” dishes.

His menu Monday night included the most beautiful salad made with organic greens and colorful vegetables with Slim Man’s own special balsamic vinaigrette dressing. It was a feast for the eyes and the palate.

His entree was “Slim Scampi” cooked in light sauce made with white wine and slivered garlic with spinach and sun dried tomatoes. He shared tips on how to toast

pine nuts, sliver garlic and salt the pasta that add a different twist to the cooking process.

The pasta was delectable and I can’t wait to try it at home. All of Slim’s menus include things you can make in approximately a half hour from start to finish. They are healthy and oh so flavorful.

You finish with feeling full without any sense of heaviness. Slim also shared stories of how he learned his authentic Italian cooking from his uncle from Italy who was a chef and had a discriminating palate. He spent 2 years learning how to cook true Italian from a pro.

While the pasta was cooking, Slim picked up the guitar and sang one of his hits for us.

The beautiful “Secrets of Your Heart”. Slim’s humor is dry and he likes to entertain his guests with a few wisecracks here and there.

The event was taped for Jan’s weekly Kitchen Kitchen TV show which airs locally.

pen a book by author Elmore Leonard and you know exactly what you’ll get: Snarky, fasttalking characters who are out of their league, usually in deep and being chased down by an equally flawed and troubled lawman (or woman). Always with a clever title and colorful cover, Leonard’s stories have a real edge and disturbingly humorous dialogue.

Leonard died last week at the age of 87. He leaves behind 45 novels and eight million books in print with his long-time publisher William Morrow. Besides crime novels, he wrote westerns, short stories and screenplays.

After serving in the Naval Reserves in the South Pacific during World War II, Leonard studied English and philosophy at the University of Detroit. He married his college sweetheart and started a family, ultimately having five children. To support his brood, he worked as an advertising copywriter.

Leonard would wake up early and spend two hours everyday working on his stories.

His rule was to get something on paper -before he started the coffee.

Leonard started his career writing westerns, publishing more than 30 short stories like The Captives, which was made

into the film “The Tall T” (1957) and ThreeTen to Yuma, also made into a film -- twice (1957, 2007).

In 1951, his first published short story Trail of the Apache appeared in the men’s magazine Argosy. His first novel, The Bounty Hunters was published in 1953. After 20th Century Fox bought the rights to Hombre in 1966 (Paul Newman stared in the film made

in 1967), Leonard’s career took off. With westerns loosing popularity, and with more clout and money, Leonard made the switch to crime fiction full time.

From 1969 to 1979 Leonard wrote 11 crime novels and three screenplays. (He adapted “The Moonshine War”, “Joe Kidd” and “Mr. Majestyk” were original screenplays).

Drawing the biggest talent the industry has to offer, “Hollywood” loved Elmore Leonard -- and still does. More than half his works have been adapted to film and television. Get Shorty was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, starred John Travolta, Danny DeVito and Rene Russo. Rum Punch became Quentin Taratino’s “Jackie Brown” with Pam Grier and Samuel L. Jackson.

Out of Sight starred George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez and was directed by Steven Soderbergh. FX series “Justified” is based on several of Leonard’s popular characters and short stories. Debuting in September at the Toronto International Film Festival is “Life of Crime” starring Jennifer Aniston and John Hawks, based on Leonard’s 1978 novel The Switch.

If writing fiction wasn’t enough, he put together a book about writing called, Elmore Leonards’s 10 Rules of Writing published in 2007. In this minimal but substantive book of only 95 pages, Leonard shares some of the rules he’d learned about his craft. They are so simple I thought I should share them: Rule number One: Never open a book

with the weather. Two: Avoid prologues.

Three: Never use a verb other than “said” to carry dialogue. Four: Never use an adverb to modify the verb “said”…he admonished gravely. Five: Keep your exclamations points under control. You are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words of prose. Six: Never use the words “suddenly” or “all hell broke loose.” Seven: Use regional dialect, patios, sparingly. Eight: Avoid detail descriptions of characters.

Nine: Don’t go into great detail describing places and things. Ten: Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.

His ten rules include examples from his work and there are cool illustrations done in pen and ink. These are not trade secrets, but they are important and it gives us insight into his trimmed down and unadorned work.

Another practical tip he shared was, “If it sounds like writing, rewrite.” As an author, Leonard liked to be invisible and he wanted his characters to shine whether they were good or bad. He had a gift to tune into his characters and let them loose -- maybe even guiding the direction of the story.

Leonard’s novel LaBrava won Leonard the prestigious Edgar Allen Poe Award for Best Novel from the Mystery Writers of America in 1984. Leonard took his craft seriously. He knew that with strong compelling characters and superbly realistic dialogue the writing didn’t need embellishment.

When I think of purely entertaining reads, I think of Elmore Leonard. He had an innate ability to take his readers into a world and introduce us to people we never thought we’d want to spend time with -and totally dig it. Thank you Dutch. Rest in peace.

WIRELESS EMERGENCY ALERTS

M

y cell phone (and most likely yours) recently began emitting ear-splitting emergency notices.

For me, it first happened at the beginning of August for an Amber Alert on Hannah Anderson. I wasn’t near my phone at the time of the message so I didn’t hear the screech. When I saw the message, I liked that we could all keep our eyes open for an abducted child.

Last week, my cell phone alerted me two more times. The first was for potential flash flooding as I drove down the 10 freeway passing Cabazon. I’m surprised one of the drivers didn’t plow into the rest of us as the noise was distracting and scary. While we

did get a few drops of rain, there was no flooding.

It next went off last weekend for a local wind storm. I honestly thought the ‘big one’ earthquake was here or possible a nuclear blast. The phone sat right next to me in a silent house. As much as I tried, I couldn’t shut the damned alert off.

By the third notification (where we actually had flash flooding), I had gotten ‘smart’ and turned off the alert system. It’s not that I didn’t want to know about these emergencies – it’s just that they were so loud and invasive. There is no vibrate setting - only the screech setting. I’m surprised the

inally announced, and not a moment too soon, are the two collector’s editions for CoD: Ghosts. Now, I have been buying the Prestige Edition’s since MW3. I traded in all of my games, extra controllers, used my Pro Rewards for extra TradeIn %s, yeah, I am pretty thrifty when it comes to getting the Big Box Toys.

It’s no surprise, that there was going to be a bump in price, depending on what came with the Prestige, and Hardened Edition, and that price usually tells you what you are going to get. Let’s take a look at what will be included in these editions, and if it’s really worth the asking price!

The Hardened Edition is going to be $119.99, a drastic bump in price compared to its elder sibling’s editions. This will include your Season Pass, IMO (in my opinion), an essential tool for the avid, multiplaying, emblem-chasing killer. Also, the Free Fall Dynamic Bonus Map, evolving gameplay in real-time, while you play in a falling skyscraper! There is a Paracord Strap which allows you to carry over 9 ft of versatile paracord wherever you go (really guys?!) And

warnings haven’t caused calls to 911 from people having heart attacks.

This Wireless Emergency Alert system was created in response to 9/11 as government wanted to have a way to send alerts to you and me. They chose to use cell broadcast towers as the way to get information to us without delay. The system was turned on last year although government authorities only just began using the service. Most phones made from 2012 on have emergency alert software programmed in.

Going forward, we get these emergency notifications for Amber Alerts, FEMA, the FCC, the Department of Homeland Security, local and state agencies, the National Weather Service and the Office of the President. Here in California, government is developing a system that may be able to give us a 10 second alert before an earthquake hits.

With so many agencies having a new toy

like this, the system is likely to be overused.

Can’t the alert system have different sound levels depending on the type of alert? I don’t need to go half deaf every time the wind blows hard.

The real problem is that people will be like me and turn off the notice system because it is just too loud, overused, wakes the baby, interrupts their sleep, disrupts a school exam, scares them, etc. Looking at the four announcements sent to me this month, none warranted the screech that urged me to drop everything that second.

While the Amber Alert was important, I’m grateful I don’t live in Los Angeles where you might get a few of these a week.

This is why the system needs to have more than just the heart stopping shriek. For most alerts, a lower decibel unique sound or ping would be more than adequate.

Note: If there are times when you do not want to be disturbed no matter the emergency, you can opt out of the system.

On an iPhone, tap on the settings icon, scroll down and tap the notifications icon and then scroll to the bottom and government alerts. It is there that you can turn on or off the alerts.

Other phones such as Androids have different ways to turn off the notices such as a text message or responding to the alert with the word Cancel, Stop or Unsubscribe.

First impression: Meh. “Over 9 feet” of paracord, is not nearly convincing enough to spend 110.00 on. Now that being said, let’s do some math. The game itself, on the 360, is 65.00 after tax. The Season Pass, is 50.00, already saving you 10.00, buying THOSE separately. So, if you were going to do get the pass anyway (which I recommend) then you might

as well get the Hardened Edition, and you can use the paracord as a belt or something.

Now to my favorite! The Prestige Edition! You get everything from the Hardened Edition, PLUS! Collectible Steelbook, and a 1080p HD Tactical Camera: Film, edit, and share custom made videos, modeled from actual in-game equipment. A Shockproof, and water resistant HD digital video recorder features a 170° wide angle lens and comes equipped with three attachments so you can take it anywhere you go. A 4GB memory

card, batteries, and editing software are also included.

As we ALL know, I love my cameras, and tech toys. I still play with my RCXD! The camera looks pretty epic, and considering my Looxcie HD has an MSRP of around $200.00 by itself, I will not mind paying the $199.99 price tag for the Prestige edition. In my mind, I’m getting another camera to use at conventions, and a free copy of CoD:Ghosts, to keep in my Gaems Vanguard while I travel.

So there you have it, a breakdown of both editions. Even with their higher price points, I think both editions are worth the money, and I will always recommend pre-ordering your copy at a GameStop, simply for the TradeIn offers they have for these editions, including additional %s, and bonus content. THE GOOD ,THE BAD AND THE UGLY OF AUTO INSURANCE

W

e all know about the legal requirements of having auto insurance and most of us purchase it to protect ourselves and our loved ones from liability in case of an accident. However few of us have any idea what we are getting… or not getting and what we legally need.

When we study for our California Driver’s License, the booklet we review for the test explains that our Driver’s License is a Privilege and NOT a Right. With privileges come responsibilities and the need to follow the driving laws as set forth in the California Department of Motor Vehicle’s Code.

California has a financial responsibility law that specifies how much auto insurance a driver must have in order to legally drive on California roads. The minimum needed today is $15,000/$30,000. That covers the driver of the at fault car for up to $15,000 for any one person, and $30,000 total for all the people in the other car… with no one person getting over $15,000.

Of course if the damages to the not at fault driver are valued at more than $15,000 the other side is still responsible for the additional amount above $15,000. The not at fault driver can sue the at fault driver and after a verdict they can attach wages and assets and renew the judgment every 10

years. The only way out of that responsibility is for the at fault driver to file bankruptcy.

One of the ways to protect yourself is to purchased UM, Uninsured Motorist coverage. This will kick in when the other driver only has an amount that is not enough to cover all your damages. Thus if the at fault driver has a $15,000 policy and your injuries are worth $100,000 you would make a claim against your own policy under the Underinsured portion of the UM Policy for the difference of up to $100,000 total. If the other at fault party has NO insurance you would make a claim against the Uninsured motorist portion of the UM policy.

Some of us want higher limits of protection and unnecessarily pay to get a $1,000,000 liability policy….which is very expensive. One of the tricks that you should discuss with your insurance man/woman is to find out what

limits are required by the insurance co before they allow you to purchase an UMBRELLA policy. I believe I have a $250,000/$500,000 policy which was needed before I could purchase an umbrella. I purchased an umbrella policy for a few hundred dollars a year for a million to 3 million of additional protection. This is a lot cheaper than getting the same coverage by buying one policy for that $1,000,000 + amount.

The liability portion of your auto policy protects you from the DMV’s requirement of minimum coverage. It pays for claims related to bodily injury and for property damage to third parties caused by the covered driver.

However any loses such as bodily injury or property damage sustained by the driver are NOT covered under liability insurance.

If you fail to obtain liability insurance, you can be fined, ordered by the court to do community service etc and even lose you driving privileges for up to one year.

Here in the greater Palm Springs area we read in the Desert Sun and Coachella Valley Weekly about CHECKPOINTS. They not only site Drunk Drivers but during the stop they request a copy of your Driver’s License and proof of insurance. They also run you for warrants for outstanding tickets or not paying fines on ANY vehicle code violation.

uyers and sellers in the Coachella Valley seldom meet in a modern real estate transaction these days but when they do it is usually at the initial showing of the home. If they do meet, for some this can be a very awkward moment.

For others it can be quite comfortable... even too comfortable. In either case this is a time when both buyers and sellers need to be very careful in what they say!

I always counsel my sellers before their home becomes “active” on the market on how to behave and what to say and what not to say when talking with buyers and their agents during a showing of their home. Not surprisingly many sellers choose not to be home when their house is being shown and let their agent’s brochure do the talking for them. This can be a good thing as the buyers and their agent can speak more freely as they go through the home and generally they spend more time looking at the home. For those sellers who choose to remain at their home during a showing, I suggest that they greet the agent and their buyers at the front door with a friendly smile and welcome greeting, trade a brochure for the agent’s business card, and

then tell them if there is anyone else in the house, any pets, or any other surprises that they may encounter during their showing.

Next, I suggest that the seller tell the agent and buyers where they will be throughout the showing (like on the couch watching TV or out by the pool, etc.) just in case they may have any questions about the house after the showing. This also tells the agent where to find the seller at the end of the showing so they can thank them and let them know that they are done. At this time it doesn’t hurt for the seller to give just a little plug for a couple of the home’s best features like, don’t miss the solar panels on the roof and the view of the desert mountains from the pool area which is stunning today! Just a short one or two line pitch and no more, then the seller needs to go to where they told them they would be.

There is a certain giant furniture store in north Indio where I cringe every time I walk through their front door only to be set upon by their “home furnishings counselor” who despite my most blatant request to be left alone, manages to dog me throughout my visit constantly answering questions that I am not even asking! Sellers please let the buyer’s trusted professional salesman (their agent) give the tour of your home and do all

the talking! At the end of the showing, if the agent and buyer have questions answer them honestly starting with the negative and ending with the positive. For example if asked about the power bills start with the summer rates of $300.00 per month and end with the winter rates of $100.00 per month. Do not try and tell buyers what you think they want to hear. I once had a seller tell an older couple that I was shopping with in the La Quinta Cove area that there were hardly any small children in her immediate neighborhood when it was pretty obvious that she lived next door to the “old woman who lived in a shoe”! Nothing that seller said after that had any credibility and the buyers chose not to make an offer because of her, not because of her house. So it is best to be brief and always tell the truth.

Never discuss price and terms and never negotiate! It is improper for a Buyer’s agent to discuss this matter without your agent present but sometimes the buyers will ask, “Would you take…?”. The correct answer is, “Please have your agent contact my agent with your offer”.

For buyers, other than trying to negotiate with the seller there are only a couple of things you definitely should not say. Do not say bad things or point out the deficiencies of a seller’s home to the seller in hopes of getting a lower price. This will more than likely be taken as an offense and

Insurance should be purchased to protect you from the “big hit” in case you are at fault. Not only does it protect you financially but it does so legally. If you are in an accident and do not have insurance you license will be taken away for a year.

After an accident we are all required to fill in an SR1. Even if you do not the other side will and then with computers will advise DMV of your accident and inquire of your insurance in effect on the date of the accident.

In California, the Raisin Administrative Committee (RAC), which is made up of raisin farmers, gets together to determine how many raisins to sell each year. The RAC then submits their plan to the Department of Agriculture which approves the production guidelines. If the year’s crop is expected to be especially good, farmers must give a portion of their crop to the federal government at no charge in order to build raisin reserves and keep prices stable.

Over time, the government sells some of these raisins and returns a portion of what they earn to the farmers.

This approach is said to protect raisin farmers from a fall in prices which could cause many to go out of business. Looked at from a consumer’s perspective, the approach keeps the price of raisins artificially high. In most businesses, the actions of the RAC would be termed collusion.

For Marvin Horne, his failure to follow these guidelines has resulted in a lawsuit brought against him by the Federal Government. The charge? Not following the Raisin Marketing Order of 1949

pursuant to the Agriculture Marketing Agreement of 1937. The charges are based on Horne selling his whole crop from 2002 to 2004 rather than giving between 3047% of his crop to the federal government.

Horne’s failure to give them his crop has resulted in potential fines and penalties that could total as much as $1.5 million, not to mention ten years of legal bills.

Many California raisin farmers are hoping that this law, termed “the world’s most outdated law” by Justice Elena Kagan is overturned. The Obama Administration supports the law while Justice Stephen Breyer is dumbfounded by an argument that keeps prices artificially high on all Americans.

We are not talking about serious tragedies.

It’s more like not getting a major contract you thought was a slam-dunk, or receiving the seventeenth rejection letter on your book or getting the “I think we should see other people”, AKA break-up call.

Darren said he whittled down wallowingin-sorrow from two weeks, to two days, to two hours, to two minutes or back up to twenty minutes if it is a colossal set-back.

This subject frequently comes into play during a coaching session. My standard advice is limiting the “woe is me scenario” to 24 hours. Let yourself feel the pain, lick your wounds then get right back up.

Real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran, who annually invests $1.75 million on the hit show “Shark Tank,” says she takes a chance on an individual only if her gut tells her the entrepreneur possesses the ability to get really hurt and quickly bounce back.

How can you step-up your bounce back rate? First, recognize your negative emotions. Understandably you’re hurting.

It is okay to experience those feelings. You may even wish to write about it. Vent away on paper! Try playing some heavy rock while you are pouring out your venom.

Then move on and access the damages. Dig deep. Did you play any role in causing the upset, or was it totally beyond your control?

Ask yourself what you could have done differently to skew the outcome. Making some notes on lessons learned helps the healing process.

Lastly, focus on something positive. If you have not quite recovered from your funk using my outlined method, go directly to the freezer and pull out the Cherry Garcia or whatever flavor puts a smile on your face.

Avoid jumping under the covers. Instead plug in the funniest video you own and lose yourself in laughter.

At the end of the day, some of us may never be able to match a two-minute sulk and recovery, but it is possible to skinny down the time we spend singing the blues.

Keep working at it. There may be a day when you stand before Corcoran and the rest of the Sharks. Show them you are a winner who can rapidly bounce back!

he military definition of “at ease” means to relax from standing at attention. Yet, a soldier remains cognizant of his/her commanding officer while at ease. According to dictionary. com “at ease” means, freedom from labor, pain, or physical annoyance; tranquil rest; comfort: to enjoy one’s ease. 2. Freedom from concern, anxiety, or solicitude; a quiet state of mind: to be at ease about one’s health. The most famous yogic term in compliance with the Yoga Sutra’s of Patanjali, Sthira (Steady) Sukham (Comforatable) Asanam (Posture). Asana is a steady, comfortable position. Each definition mirrors one another. Finding ease within your life is possible when you focus on being “at ease.”

Although you may not know what you are striving to achieve when you feel the need to relax, consider shifting your mindset to rest at ease. The potential of achieving tranquility may be closer than you imagined. In a fast paced society, slowing down may not be an option. Rather I perceive it we must slow down or you risk potential burnout. Seek to find time to meditate, slow down, and breath. If you are a neophyte to meditation, do not worry as it may take time to learn. The mere thought of sitting quietly could give you thoughts of anxiety. If so, that moment is clearly not the proper time to begin a meditation practice.

So how does one find ease or relaxation?

One must take the time and have a desire to make a change to find ease. Organizing your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems may allow you to get synchronized.

When the sympathetic nervous system is aroused, we are placed on alert, also known as our “fight-orflight” response. The parasympathetic nervous system when aroused produces a feeling of relaxation. The two systems work congruently; as one becomes active the other displays less activity. Our society is high strung and we generally live in a high alert mode. Therefore, relaxation is difficult to achieve by most people because we are constantly in motion physiologically. Here

are a few suggestions on how to slow down and take it easy: Try doing less. You may be asking yourself, how can I possibly do less when I have so much to do? Try lessening your load. Is there someone you can delegate your responsibilities? Focus on what is important. Schedule appointments from one another to alleviate the feeling of being overwhelmed. This may allow you time to take a snack or coffee/tea break.

Be in the present. How often do you deviate from the present? Make a list of to-do’s to help you stay focused. You may feel more organized by managing your time more efficiently. Your mind will not waiver and worry about what needs to be done in the future.

Disconnect from devices. Shut down your phone, computer and anything else that may distract you. All of the above complicate your thoughts. Even if you think you cannot live without your phone… leave your device behind on your lunch break.

Our devices can create stress.

Focus on people. How often do we see people fidgeting on their phones when they should be enjoying their lunch date?

Our physical presence may be there but our minds are multi-tasking. Attempt to connect at your next lunch meeting rather than worrying about what may or may not be on the agenda.

Breathe. We are short in our breaths and we are creating self-inflicting stress.

Stop, take 10 breaths, and begin again if needed. Feel the smoothness of your breath move through your body and bring yourself back to center. Relieve the stress through breathing techniques.

The above suggestions are meaningful.

MANAGING MENOPAUSE NATURALLY

M

enopause is a subject on which there are many views and opinions, and it is experienced in just as many ways. Fortunately, there are many simple steps and natural remedies you can take to help relieve the myriad of symptoms you may face.

The average age of menopause is around 52, but peri-menopause can begin in the 30’s as hormones start to shift and fluctuations in estrogen, progesterone and testosterone start the roller-coaster of emotions and symptoms. Officially, one is not in menopause until there are no menses for 12 months. It could be irregular in timing, but as long as a woman is bleeding, she is not in menopause. Since the thyroid, adrenals, and ovaries are interrelated, the condition of these glands play an important role in how one gets through this ‘change of life.’

What is Going On? As most of us know, menopause symptoms can include irritability, hot flashes, problems sleeping, thinning hair, decreased libido, increased breast tenderness, vaginal dryness, food cravings, weight gain, fuzzy thinking, headaches, joint discomfort, and more.

During this change, the body starts to hold on to fat because estrogen is stored in fat, and is a very valuable hormone to be released when needed. This can create weight gain around the middle and can make it difficult to lose those unwanted pounds.

Since estrogen and progesterone production by the ovaries decreases, testosterone levels fall out of ratio and can also lead to weight gain since testosterone is primarily a male hormone. Muscle starts to diminish and metabolism starts to slow down.

What’s A Woman to Do? Exercise Since fat cells do not burn fat like muscle cells do, it is important to stay active. Find something you enjoy and stick with it.

Walking, yoga, Pilates, swimming, biking or anything that raises your heart rate for at least 20 to 40 minutes a day, 4-5 times a week. Make exercise fun by diversifying.

Dancing is also great as long as it increases your heart rate above 100.

Herbs Herbs such as Black Cohosh, Dong Quai, Wild Yam (root), St. John’s Wort, Sage, Shatavari Root Extract, Licorice Root, and Korean Ginseng can also offer relief from symptoms. Chase tree can be helpful for those who are still menstruating. If you choose herbs, make sure you get organic

forms from a reputable company.

Foods These diet guideline are not only for menopause but for life!

Studies show that women with good eating habits tend to have less menopausal symptoms. So if you have been thinking about improving your eating habits, doing so to minimize menopausal and perimenopausal symptoms should be another very good incentive.

Above all, avoid MSG, hydrogenated oils, “enriched” packaged foods, high fructose syrups, caffeine, alcohol, peanuts and white foods such as white flour (that includes pasta and breads), white rice, and white potatoes.

Avoid sugar! Sugar contributes to so many problems, and remember, white foods (breads, pastas, cookies) turn into sugar in your body. This includes all artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, and yes, raw honey and agave nectar are sugars. Stevia, Xylitol, and Lacanto are acceptable natural sweeteners. Better yet, substitute sugary foods with fresh, organic fruit to feed those cravings.

Many say to increase soy (for natural estrogen), but almost all soy today is genetically modified so I don’t recommend it. Most soy is unfermented and has very high levels of phytic acid that blocks mineral absorption. Meso and Tempe are good forms of fermented soy, but make sure you get them non-GMO. If you like salt, make sure it is a good quality sea salt that has a high amount of trace minerals to balance the sodium chloride such as Himalayan sea salt.

Chocolate should be eliminated. If you just can’t go without it, make sure it is organic dark chocolate with at least 70% Cacao, and limit to no more than once or twice a week.

Get more fiber and calcium by eating more organic, green vegetables. They are a wonderful source of nutrients and trace minerals. The body absorbs 98% of calcium from green vegetables and only 2% from common calcium supplements, which are mostly just ground up rock!

Whole grains can be a good source of fiber. But from my research, ALL grains should be sprouted, and most of us eat far too many grain products, which are mainly over processed and hence, depleted of nutrients.

Eat more organic fruits and berries.

Cranberries, strawberries, blueberries, bilberries, cherries, red clover, green tea, flax seed, black beans, yams, omega 3 oils (high quality fish oil), raw nuts, and as above,

DR. PETER, YOU TALKED ABOUT MENOPAUSE IN YOUR LAST ARTICLE. I’VE BEEN HEARING A LOT ABOUT BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE THERAPY, WHY IS IT CALLED BIOIDENTICAL? KYMM, LA QUINTA

Kymm, bioidentical hormones are hormones that are identical in molecular structure to hormones that we make in our bodies. These hormones aren’t “harvested” from our bodies, but actually synthesized or made from a plant chemical extracted from yams.

When a female becomes menopausal, many of her symptoms are due to lowered levels of estrogens and progesterone.

A more “natural” method of treatment can be with bioidentical estrogen and progesterone.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is often called natural hormone therapy because bioidentical hormones act in the body just like the hormones we produce. The goal in BHRT is to mimic nature, thus not have the adverse side effects that can occur when using a synthesized hormone that is not bioidentical. Many of the commercially available hormones that are prescribed are not bioidentical, they are molecular structures that your body has not seen before, which may be the reason they may cause unwanted side effects.

BHRT is usually applied in creams, gels or patches. There are commercially bioidentical hormones that can be prescribed or they can be made by a compounding pharmacist.

A full evaluation by a physician familiar with BHRT is needed to see if one is a candidate for treatment. Even though BHRT is considered “natural”, patients still need to be carefully monitored and have regular follow ups with their physican. fresh green leafy vegetables and fruit. Eat twice as many vegetables as fruits. Eat three times a day, especially breakfast, with quality protein at every meal and some kind of raw vegetable. Increase healthy fats like raw organic butter, coconut oil, flax seed oil, and don’t worry about the calories. Focus more on nutrition content. All calories are not equal! Get as much nutrition per calorie as possible!

Increase water intake.

Preferably, filtered water is best, not distilled, and everyone should be drinking ½ their body weight in ounces. So if you weigh 150 lbs, you should be drinking 75 ounces of fresh water every day.

Realize What’s Happening & Relax

HEY DOC, I WAS JUST DIAGNOSED WITH HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND MY DOCTOR WANTS ME TO MONITOR MY BLOOD PRESSURE AT HOME. ARE THOSE WRIST BLOOD PRESSURE MACHINES GOOD? ROBERT, RANCHO MIRAGE

Robert, I frequently encounter the use of wrist blood pressure (BP) machines by some of my patients. I don’t like them because they are very sensitive to body position, your arm and wrist have to be at heart level when checking blood pressure with a wrist cuff. Wrist BP machines usually give a higher reading and are more inaccurate compared to the traditional arm cuffs. Unless there is a physical reason why you can’t take your blood pressure in your arm, I generally do not recommend the wrist blood pressure monitors.

I also very often recommend that my patients bring in their home blood pressure machines to my office to compare it with the office BP machine, so that the monitoring can be consistent. So, Robert, invest in a good blood pressure unit that goes on your arm and not your wrist.

Of course, the more you resist something, the more unpleasant it is.

Stress can contribute to many symptoms, so take time to relax and continue to enjoy life.

Try laughing about it! This may be the most important thing you can do, as state of mind can override many physical conditions.

Acupuncture can also be very helpful, and a good massage once a week relieves stress and feels oh so good!

It is never too early or too late to start taking responsibility for your body. Look at menopause as a little adventure. Get together with friends and support each other with healthy tips and recipes. You are not alone on this road to the next stage of life!
