Steel Magnolias

at the Palm Canyon Theatre

by Lola Rossi-Meza The Coachella Valley is filled with many choices of entertainment, so I ask, when was the last time you enjoyed live theatre? We are fortunate to have a very inspiring play at the Palm Canyon theatre, “Steel Magnolias” by Robert Harling. The engagement is this weekend only at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 30, and Saturday, March 31, with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 1. Tickets are $25 and available by calling (760) 323-5123, at the door or online at PalmCanyonTheatre.org. The show is directed by Steve Fisher with lighting design by Phil Murphy, scenic design by J.W. Layne and costumes by Se Layne. “Steel Magnolias” is starring Judith Chapman (from The Young and the Restless) as M’Lynn, along with local celebrities Joey English as Ouiser and VJ Hume as Clairee. Also featured in the show are Denise Strand as Truvy, Heidi Harper as Annelle and Terra Marine as Shelby. Set in Truvy’s Beauty Parlor in Chinquapin, Louisiana, “Steel Magnolias” illustrates how the lives of six distinctly different women

interweave through the unending cycle of birth, marriage and death. For those who know Joey English, the thought of her playing the role as Ouiser, a grouchy, two-time widow, who always looks

DJ-Athon Music is an important part of our daily lives. We have all grown up listening to music on the radio and many of us were fortunate enough to participate in music classes in school. However, in recent years, many musical programs in the public schools have been cut back or discontinued completely, leaving it up to us to do fundraising events to bring them back. That’s where Music Matters comes in. This Friday, March 30, at the Westfield Shopping Center, there will be an allday event to raise money for the music programs in the PSUSD. The event will have DJ’s of all ages and musical styles spinning tunes from Noon to 10pm. There will be dancing, food vendors, games, a henna tattoo artist and other fun activities for the whole family. The admission is only $5 and if you get there before 3:00 you will get a free ticket to enter the drawing to win a free ticket to Coachella Festival. They will give away a ticket for week one

and another ticket for week two. If you arrive after 3pm, don’t worry, you can still purchase a ticket to enter the drawing for only $5. The best part of all of this fun is that 50% of the proceeds are going to a worthy cause; The Pinnacle Fund, which puts arts and technology back into PSUSD. This includes schools in Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage and Thousand Palms. The event was put together by Craig Michaels who has been a local mobile DJ for over 25 years. About 8 months ago Michaels started the Coachella Valley DJ Association, which now has about 18 members, who meet monthly at local bars or restaurants. “I wanted to bring everybody together so we can elevate the level of professionalism of the DJ’s here in town,” said Michaels. “As a result some of the guys have been able to help each other get more work.” Michaels goes on to say that one of the

reasons he started the group was so they could do charity events to give back to the community. “Dynamic Dave suggested we do a DJ-Athon and that’s how this event came to be.” Michaels saw the Pinnacle Fund online and liked that they had a music program and of course they were happy to be on the receiving end as well. Then Westfield Shopping Center came on board as they like to be involved in community driven events, so they sponsored the location, which is downstairs center of the mall in continue to page 11

enjoy playing odd characters,” English said with a smile and whispered, “Plus, I’m doing it without eyelashes.” She was very proud to say she “discovered” Terra Marine at the after cast party from “Sordid Lives.” Marine graduated with a degree in Theatre and spoke to English, who put her in touch with Se Layne. Marine auditioned for Annelle, but they wanted her to play Shelby. Also involved in this production is English’s grand-daughter, Shelbey Mae, who is the “unofficial” production assistant to director Steve Fisher, who directed Mae when she starred in Palm Canyon Theatre’s production of “Annie.” “The interesting thing is there are no men in the stage play, it all takes place in one place, the beauty shop. It talks about a lot of things that happen in the South, that are universal, like “Sordid Lives” in that sense. There’s a lot of values that go on in

the South and women bond strong and they don’t cry in public, and this play talks about that.” The interaction of the characters is very emotional. It brings lots of laughter and many tears. “It’s really a tear jerker, but then it comes right back out with the steel magnolia Southern grit.” Judith Chapman is back in town after her triumphant “Vivian” and is being called the Master Thespian. “Judith is commuting from LA just to do this with us. She is phenomenal as M’Lynn. We try to do something together every year.” Thanks to the Layne Family and the City of Palm Springs, we have a wonderful theatre with top notch actors, directors, set and costume designers. They are currently in rehearsal for their production of Brigadoon opening on Friday, April 13.

With two separate promoters of The Dinah Shore Weekend having been in direct competition for the past six years, there has been a certain amount of confusion. In the early days, the event was a joint venture between Mariah Hanson, who pioneered the first Dinah Shore Weekend before joining forces with the duo Sandy Sachs and Dr. Robin Gans (promoters of Girl Bar). But in 2005, the partnership dissolved and the power promoters parted ways, each continuing the Dinah legacy with two separate visions of what the event should grow to become. Since the split, the spirit of competition has stepped up the famed weekend to a spectacular world-class plateau. But for Hanson the rivalry translated into one thing: the fact that “competition inspires perfection.” Girl Bar Dinah, run by Sandy Sachs and Dr. Robin Gans, is now leaving Palm Springs to produce a Dinah-like version in Las Vegas called Girl Bar Dinah Shore Week Las Vegas. “I wish Girl Bar & Truck Stop much luck in Las Vegas. I think starting something new in a new location is a good move for them. However, while you can move a business to another city, I don’t believe you can move the Dinah Shore Weekend out of Palm Springs. The Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend has always and always will take place in Palm Springs - it’s been the tradition for more than 22 years! The Dinah is to Palm Springs what Sundance is to Park City.” - Mariah Hanson, creator & producer of Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend (www.TheDinah.com) You can be guaranteed that Club Skirts will not disappoint with all of the non-stop action, the house-packed crazy wild Pool Parties, the sexiest Go-Go dancers, the best DJs, the spectacular entertainment, the celebrities, plus the hottest girls in the world, The Dinah has enough to make any girls’ head spin! The world’s largest girl party/music festival will turn Palm Springs into the ultimate entertainment hub delivering a spectacular slate of legendary headliners, rising pop stars, and lesbian TV celebrities. Emceed by E!’ “Chelsea Lately” writer & roundtable guest-host, Fortune Feimster,

The Dinah 2012 will be rocked with special performances from headliners Nina Sky, Grammy-Award Winning Music Legend Chaka Khan; Dance Divas Wynter Gordon (“Dirty Talk” w David Guetta), Cece Peniston (“Finally”) and Pussycat Doll Jessica Sutta (“Show Me”); music’s new “it” girls Dev (“In The Dark”) & Neon Hitch (“Love U Betta”), and up-and-coming pop talents Rye Rye, Meital and Porcelain Black. Want more? How about the Charlie’s Angels of comedy: veteran comic Suzanne Westenhoefer, stand-up’s fastest breakthrough rising stars Jessica Kirson (Celebrity Apprentice and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno) and Karen Williams? Or America’s most beloved, iconic television actress, Meredith Baxter, up close & personal in an exclusive intimate Q&A session? A Dinah’mite line-up of A-listers galore also including some of the LGBT communiyt’s favorite lesbian celebrities on Primetime nonscripted reality & game series such as Whitney Mixter, Romi Klinger, Rose Garcia, Kelsey Grace Chavarria, Rachel Rodriguez, Francine Beppu and Sara Bettencourt from Season 2 of The Real L Word, as well as America’s Next Top Model Cycle 5’s very own jaw-dropping Kim Stolz. Ladies get ready for the ultimate MUSTSEE, MUST-EXPERIENCE Dinah EVER! A girl-given phenomenon, you just have to do it!

How can you find out the financial health of your bank? Two publicly available rating systems help the consumer in this area: Bauer Financial with its a seven-tier rating system, and; Bankrate.com with its fivetier rating system. As the latest available information is for September, 2010, I will use those ratings to force rank our local establishments. Why should you care about your bank’s health? If you keep less than $250,000 per person in your accounts at a bank, you really don’t need to worry from a deposit account standpoint. If your bank was sold or failed, service levels might change for the better or worse but that is about it - your money is safe. Where things get trickier is when you have a loan outstanding or some

unique piece of business. This is of greatest concern to small businesses and borrowers without the financial strength to easily move their business to a competitor bank. If you fall into one of these categories, you need to be particularly aware of your bank’s health. Additionally, if your bank is weak, their is a reasonable chance that they have government regulators sitting in the back room or in some remote office looking at everything your bank does with a fine tooth comb - not the best environment from which to run a bank. So what is the financial condition of the banks doing business locally? Explanation of Terms Used: Like a student in school, you want your bank to have a ÒBÓ rating or higher. Banks getting a ÒCÓ rating are of ÒadequateÓ Þnancial health although exhibiting some areas of weakness. Banks with ÒDÓ grades typically need to merge with another bank or raise capital as it is tough to compete with the stronger banks. Banks getting a failing mark are of the lowest Þnancial health in the industry where regulatory authorities signiÞcantly restrict the operation of the bank until the serious problems warranting this grading level are resolved. This typically relates to high levels of loan problems and insufÞcient capital to resolve those problems. HAYDEN, A SYMBOL FOR RESCUE DOGS

dog. Signature petitions were delivered to Governor Brown’s office. On March 13, the Assembly Subcommittee voted unanimously NOT to repeal any part of the current shelter animal protections. The first round is a victory for the animals, but the issue is far from settled. In April, our Senate Budget Committee takes up the Hayden Act for further review. More phone calls and letters will be needed. Meanwhile, a small dog named Hayden brings blessings and happiness to his new owners. From “doggie death row” to a

Hayden, an adorable Loving All Animals’ rescue dog , was officially adopted by Wesley and Bonnie Sartain of Palm Desert on March 13, 2012. On that same date in Sacramento the California State Assembly Budget Subcommittee voted on the fate of the Hayden Act . This law which protects California’s shelter animals requires some minimal vet care, record keeping including lost & found postings . Governor Brown proposes a repeal of critical sections of the Act as part of his yearly budget. Hayden, a small 2 year old Maltese Silky terrier mix, was rescued from the Coachella Valley Animal Campus just hours before he was to be euthanized. The county’s rescue coordinator contacted Loving All Animals late one afternoon about the dog’s plight. She emailed a photo of him staring through the bars of his shelter kennel. He was labeled fearful by the shelter staff and placed in the back quarantine area . Hayden was never seen by the public and was available for adoption only to approved rescue organizations. In the shelter environment, the little dog was afraid when the county staff tried to give him his vaccinations. Like most humans, Hayden didn’t like getting shots and

6

squirmed in resistance. In an overcrowded and understaffed shelters, dogs like Hayden don’t have much of a future. But after leaving the shelter, Hayden showed no fear and gratefully kissed his rescuer . He proved to be a charming, handsome dog who loves his humans and fellow canines. If the Hayden Act is repealed, California shelters will not be required to hold an animal beyond a 72 hour period for an owner to reclaim. This means dogs like Hayden will not be available to rescue groups in many California counties. This means your pet could go missing on a Saturday in a city where the shelter is closed on Sunday and Monday, only to have it euthanized on Tuesday before you can find the public shelter. Fortunately, our Riverside County Department of Animal Services administration is committed to keeping the Hayden requirements without a mandate. However, it will be a different story in many parts of our state, especially the poorer counties such as Kern, San Bernardino, Imperial, etc. California animal lovers made phone calls to their representatives and rallied at the Capitol. Sutter’s Friends was started on Facebook, referencing the Governor’s

new life as a pampered prince in his palace, Hayden is now a symbol for the fight to protect California shelter animals. His new pet parents report Hayden is the perfect dog, blissfully snuggling with them every evening and happily dining with them at outdoor cafes. Hayden is almost identical in both temperament and appearance to the Sartain’s deceased dog, Ace. They were amazed that Hayden joined their household as though he’d been there forever. Rescue dogs like Hayden deserve a second chance!

Any New York play by Neil Simon is A-Ok by us for credibility of place (Yonkers!), time (1942), and a night of laughs that received rave reviews on the great White Way of Broadway (New York) when first produced in 1991. Here’s the scoop: There’s a Candy Shop lodged below Grandma’s apartment in, you guessed it, the highly populated Hudson River town of Yonkers. Director Rebecca Havely has updated and expanded the stage setting to bring the voice-overs to life, literally. The light-hearted comedy with welldrawn characters include Grandma Kurnitz, 35-year old mentally-challenged Bella and her secret romance, two young grandsons, and Grandma’s brother Louis, a small-time hood. “Lost in Yonkers has been found to be “must see” show by desert locals. Cullison wrote, illustrated and rhymed “A Gothic Fable---The Tales of Beverly Rose.” Each story “addresses psychological issues by deeply weaving them into fantastical metaphor” according to the author. Wow! We’re intrigued before we’ve even turned a page. Having worked on the book for nearly 20 years, it’s obvious this author has the patience of Job! He makes every book by hand. “I believe books are an art form and binding them by hand gives each one its own personality.” Meant to be read to children by an adult, the exquisite book is set during the Victorian Era and tells the gothic literature genre tale of Beverly Rose and her journey as she navigates her way through life’s threats, distractions and temptations. I learned something early on in life the kitchen is where life is shared with family and friends alike. The smells of Thanksgiving, cinnamon and nutmegged cider filling the house with the Spirit of Christmas. The kitchen is a way we make memories with food meant to say ‘I care’. ShareKitchen is a new way to make these memories together as a community. Offering innovative shared kitchen spaces and a business development center, ShareKichen is providing opportunities to culinary professionals at all stages of their careers. In addition to fostering local start-ups, our kitchens offer a low cost alternative where an out of work chef can house and grow his or her catering business, a product development program where a mother can develop a business plan and build a brand so she can bake cupcakes for resale in local stores and restaurants and a place where a retired school teacher can start the second chapter of life with the support needed to successfully fulfill their dream of owning a restaurant or cafe. Partnering with SCORE, food industry professionals and many others, ShareKitchen will provide a cost effective way for someone with a passion for food and business to realize their dreams. As we anticipate our debut here in the Coachella Valley, we encourage you all to visit our website and contact us for more information about how we can help you reach your goals. ShareKitchen is much more than a fully-equipped and licensed commercial kitchen for rent by the hour. It is a place of growth and learning; creativity and self-realization. While the majority of music fans are well familiar with Adele’s “21” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Wrecking Ball,” there are an endless number of other new albums worthy of downloading or getting on CD. In this column, I highlight a trio of my favorite recent releases from the far-flung corners of the sonic universe. Artist: Michael and the Lonesome Playboys Album: Last of the Honky Tonks (Blackwater Records) Tell Me More: There are millions of modern-day country music fans who love the celebrated likes of Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts and Kenny Chesney. But there is a small, but growing contingent of Americana fans who have been drawn to the authentic sounds of Michael and the Lonesome Playboys. On the group’s commercial debut, the aptly-titled “Last of the Honky Tonks,” singer-songwriter Michael Ubaldini and company blend the sound and spirit of Merle Haggard, Hank Williams and the Flying Burrito Brothers across the 14-

song disc. From the confessional “Cross Country Ride” and beautiful “Hearts & Flowers” to the rollicking “Shambles” and Delta blues-minded “When a Freight Train Rolls Right Over You,” Ubaldini’s emotive vocals are used in the service of superb material that resonates whether the listener is a bona fide cowboy or simply a city slicker who appreciates great songs. Artist: Otis Taylor Album: Contraband (Telarc) Tell Me More: An indisputable innovator, singer-songwriter/multiinstrumentalist Otis Taylor’s so-called “trance blues” effortlessly merges Chicago

Melancholy is another successful ingredient in the skilled hands of the Saw Doctors, notably on the confessional “Be Yourself,” “As the Light Fades” and “Goodbye Again.”

His mother played piano by ear for the family during the years he was growing up and his younger brother Anthony, an artist, played drums in his bands. His nephew Brian is a musician, TV producer and artist along with his niece Noel, who sings, writes songs, plays guitar, and now works as an animator for HBO. His son Justin, who is a post-graduate student majoring in Computer Engineering, plays piano and bass guitar. His daughter Arianna sings, plays a little guitar and drums. In addition to being an accomplished pianist, Meza also plays guitar, bass, harmonica and drums. He is also a composer, arranger and producer with several CDs under his belt. His song, “Dirty Martini” from his latest CD “The New Standard” reached #26 on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Charts. After leaving college, where he majored

A native of Southern California, Meza knew at a young age that music would always be part of his life. “My uncle, David Yanez, always had the best hi-fi equipment and played jazz records constantly. That exposure gave me a great appreciation for music at an early age. “My Uncle Charlie played sax, was a band leader and recorded for Capitol Records. His musical arrangements, as Charles Romo and His Orchestra, were on an album series called “Background Music” in the early 1960s .” His older brother Jim played trumpet and drums. “My brother would often rehearse in our living room with his friends. That was when I first saw a live band up close. The

The band was also the opening act for many Bay area bands like Tower of Power, Santana, Cold Blood, Malo, Pete and Coke Escovedo and a young Sheila E. In L.A. he played with Stevie Wonder’s backup band Sage. “I got to play a bit with jazz artist George Duke and I did a two-day seminar with Hammond B-3 organ master Jimmy Smith, it was a great experience.” He later moved to Las Vegas where he sang and played piano with the band on Cleopatra’s Barge at Caesar’s Palace. Fun in the Sun Palm Desert Aquatic Center

Temperatures in the desert are getting higher and summer is around the corner. It is time to get fit and ready for the swimsuit season. Our beautiful Coachella Valley has two very special places that can help us get fit and cool off while having a fantastic time. Last June marked the opening of the Aquatic Center located at the Palm Desert Civic Center Park; a family-friendly water park that offers activities for everyone. If you want to exercise the Aquatic Center has a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic-sized pool for competition events or lap swimming. Kids will have tons of fun splashing and spraying at the Splash pool which is only a foot deep. For adults and older kids there is a 25-yard recreation pool filled with lukewarm water that features two 20-foot waterslides. The center offers a unique water experience that is ideal for the whole family.

The Palm Desert Aquatic Center also offers swim lessons and adaptive therapeutic programs for all ages. If you are looking to increase your strength and flexibility and at the same time decrease stress and blood pressure the Aquatic Center’s water aerobics and water sports will be just right for you. Whether you are looking for a place to swim or to relax and have fun, the Aquatic Center is the perfect place to visit and it opens daily. The center competitive pool opens Monday to Friday from 5:30am to 8:00pm, Saturday from 7:00am to 5:00pm, and Sunday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. The recreation pool opens Monday to Friday from 11:00am to 7:00pm, and Saturday and Sunday until 5:00pm. Aquatic Center/73751 Magnesia Falls Drive/ Palm Desert/ (760)565-7467/ www.pdpool.com

Fun on the Ice at Desert Ice Castle

What an unbelievable week of golf, all the way around….did you even notice? On the crest of this desert’s biggest event and the LPGA’s first major, the Kraft Nabisco at Mission Hills, this past weekend saw some amazing golf and the biggest names on all three tours were there to make a splash. Well maybe it just took a venue as familiar as Bay Hill Country Club for Tiger Woods to make his long awaited return to the winner’s circle this past Sunday. In

offers skating classes for those who want to learn this magnificent and special way of having fun and staying fit. If you are looking for something more intimate, the Desert Ice Castle also rents its facility for private events and birthday parties; kids will love an “ice birthday party” with pizza, soft drinks, party decoration, and ice skating. The Desert Ice Castle is open for public skating Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 2:15pm to 9:30pm, Friday until 11:30pm, Saturday it closes at 12:00am, and Sunday from 12:00pm to 4:30pm. For the Hockey and skating school schedule feel free to contact them, all the staff is very friendly. This is another reason to not leave the desert this summer, stay and have fun in the sun and on the ice. Desert Ice Castle/ 68-600 Perez Road/ Cathedral City/ (760)324-0444/ www. deserticecastle.com

However, if you preferred to stay dry and cool at the same time, we are lucky to have the Desert Ice Castle, the coolest place in the desert. The Desert Ice Castle is a National Hockey League regulation-sized ice skating rink; it opened its doors in September of 2011 in Cathedral City. It opens every day throughout the year for recreational skating, hockey, and figure skating. It also

This is Tiger’s first win with well-known and respected jock Joe La Cava on the bag. Joey, as you know has been schlepping hooks for longtime dez-rez Freddie Couples since the early 1980’s but after the President’s Cup, asked Freddie (his best bud) for a professional release and chance of a lifetime to work for Tiger. the first of what they both hope will be many victories for the pair as a unit. Now speaking of Freddie Couples, he was busy doing his own business down at the Mississippi Gulf Classic. When I say doing business I mean dropping a ten-foot putt on eighteen to edge Michael Allen. His victory at Fallen Oak Country Club was his first on the Champions Tour this year. As Dibble would say, the “best player in the world” Yani Tseng was doing the usual – winning. This time it was La Costa, California (nice place) and the Kia Classic. The victory was Yani’s fifteenth as a pro

Movie Reviews with Robin Simmons

Club Clubb Crawler Cl C l Review Revi R i by Tracy Dietlin Just saying that you’re ‘hanging out at The Hood tonight’ sounds cool. And when you walk in to The Hood Bar and Pizza in Palm Desert, you really feel that vibe. Twin brothers Pat and Colin Hood, have created a neighborhood bar where locals can go hang with their friends in a comfortable ‘everyone knows your name’ environment. “We really just wanted to have that inviting, relaxing atmosphere where you can get great food and drinks at an amazing value,” shared Pat Hood. “And we also wanted to provide great music from both local and out of town bands.” Last July the Hood’s moved their business from a much smaller location on Highway 111 to the old McCormick’s location just down the street because

they had simply out grown the old place. Some might say it was taking on a lot to move to a place 4 times larger in the middle of summer, but the Hood brothers have dialed it in quite nicely. Since then they have become the place “to be” for live music and good food in Palm Desert. There have been many nights where they have had to turn people away at the door because they had reached their maximum capacity. Not only do they have affordable drink prices but they also have a great menu that includes salads, sub sandwiches and an extensive appetizer menu, which features their signature jalapeno poppers that are to die for. However, The Hood is probably known most for having the best pizza in town. You can

order a 16” or 20” pie or even by the slice for just $3.50 to $5.50, with the slice being huge. They even serve up until 1:30 am. and also feature a large outdoor patio for smokers which has its own beer bar. The Hood is a great place to hear live music as it boasts a great sound system, lighting and a cool stage, which have all recently received a major overhaul when Brandon Ray Henderson came on board as the bars booker and promoter. Henderson, who has played in many bands, touring the US and Europe, has been a great addition to The Hood team. Because of his experience and contacts he has been able to bring in major acts to the venue. He also helped remodel the green room for the bands to hang in where he

Brandon Ray Henderson

As a 6th grader Brandon Ray Henderson’s first instrument of choice was to play the drums, however the school music program made him play trumpet for 6 months before he could play them. He continued to play the snare drum through middle school. Then when he was 14 his family moved from Downey to Victorville. “That was really a drastic change moving from LA to the high desert,” insists Henderson. “It was about that time my parents got me a guitar. The school offered lessons so I took my guitar with me every day and practiced all the time. I was listening to bands like Nirvana, Guttermouth, NOFX and Bad Religion.” Henderson says he wasn’t really into applying himself in school. He just wanted to play guitar and ride his skateboard. During high school he played in the band This Side Up. Some of the members later went on to form the band, Lorraine Drive, but in 2002 Henderson moved to the Coachella Valley. The singer from that band, Dan Murillo, went on to become the vocalist for Hollywood Undead. “The first band I played in here in the desert was the Del Padres with Herb Lineau, who

is a desert legend of punk music,” he states. “Before I moved to the desert, I was randomly traveling around and was in Bakersfield where I met Steven Neufeld from the band Hey Mike!. He got to play with the band Craig’s Brother from Santa Cruz. I jumped in on tour with them and called myself their guitar tech even though I really wasn’t. I basically just carried stuff around and got the tour experience.” Then in 2004, Henderson went on tour with Hey Mike! as their actual guitar tech and then from March of 2005 to May 2006 he held the gig as their guitar player. After that he took a 6 month hiatus from playing music. “I don’t know if I just got lazy or what, but I had been out on the road driving unhealthy amounts of miles at a time not eating, sleeping on people’s floors and not making any money. Don’t get me wrong,” he insists. “I was grateful for the experience and the best part of all of it is that I got to make friends that I will have for the rest of my life.” In January of 2007 he reconnected with Lineau and they formed Half Astro, along with Marcus Bush on drums, who Henderson refers to as his “musical soulmate” and Billy Cordell,

who he refers to as a “monster on bass.” They opened for bands like Agent Orange and the Adolescents. Henderson also played with the desert punk cult band Family Butcher, with John Summers and Alfredo Hernandez, who he still performs with in the instrumental surf rock band The Woodys. He says that the highlight for him so far has been getting to play with Brant Bjork, the original drummer for Kyuss, who he toured Europe with. “The first time I saw Brant play was back in 2002 at what I think was the last real generator party that Jessie Hughes of EODM took me to. I saw these two guys, one was playing guitar and singing and the other was playing drums and singing and then all of the sudden they just switched and it was awesome. The other guy was Mike Johnson of The Whizards, who is one of my favorite guitar players in the desert.” Henderson went into the studio with Bjork to record “Gods and Godesses” in 2009 and went out on tour with him in 2010 where they played 70 shows in 17 countries within 3 months. For a young guy in his late 20s, Henderson

Disney’s huge fail with Edgar Rice Burroughs’ fantastic heroic action guy is a daunting reminder that all the marketing survey money can buy does not trump a well-told story. Everyone connected with the creative decision making on this jawdropping $300 million debacle should be fired. My 17-year-old son who is at the center of the target audience actually fell asleep! Did anyone take a look at the talky, boring, sometimes incoherent screenplay? The leads have no charisma or chemistry, the music and cinematography are flat and the often-cheesy effects are derivative. And the dumbed-down title is as unappealing as the poster. How could something like this go so wrong? The growing legions of Disney haters just got a lot bigger. Just for fun, take a look (above) at Frank Frazetta’s art for a paperback edition of Burroughs’ John Carter and the Princess of Mars. Now there’s a movie! Too bad team Disney is blind.

there is a waning of intensity as the story unfolds. Maybe the movie-makers will fix this flaw. Although author Collins speaks of flipping the TV channels between war footage and a reality show as the inspiration for her novels, there may be another (see below) source that’s better told, more visceral and far more disturbing.

Already a certified hit and a guaranteed big screen franchise, the almost 2 1/2 hour long movie version of the first book in Suzanne Collins’ best-selling trilogy is off and running. The hyper mix of teens and a reality TV’s broadcast of their fight to the death should satisfy the legions of readers for its faithful story telling. No big artistic risks are on the screen, and there’s not the urgent energy that one might expect in a film adaptation of such incendiary material. Jennifer Lawrence is terrific in her heroine mode and will no doubt never shake the connection with her fictional character. For those who have read the “Hunger” books,

Parosella will take the stage on April 14 at The Hood Bar in Palm Desert.

In 2000, director Kinji Fukasaki unleashed the savagely poetic epic about an innocent group of high school kids forced by their government to hunt and kill their classmates for sport. Based on the 1999 Japanese novel by Koushun Takami, the movie was nominated for 10 Japanese Academy Awards. It became a global phenom and was banned in many places by concerned civic groups. Now available for the first time in America, the 4-disc set includes over two hours of special features. Here is one of

Lavendar Bistro

Whether you are celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for an escape from the ordinary, Lavender Bistro will not disappoint. Be sure to reserve a table outside to capture Lavender’s true elegance and style. With lights delicately streaming through the trees and welcoming music in the air, I was immediately whisked away from the desert to a lush garden, surrounded by private canopied gazebos. The only thing better than the ambiance, was Chef Nicolas Despras’s menu. While I enjoyed his vibrant and delicious Lavender Seasonal Salad with asparagus, ripe cherry tomatoes and freshly shaved fennel in a light lemon-truffle vinaigrette, my guest opted for the Maryland Blue Crab cakes with a creamy garlic aioli. The appetizers were beautifully plated and presented, leaving us with much anticipation for the next course. Our server, Luis, was pleasant, attentive and clearly a professional, providing the perfect timing between courses. For the main course, fresh pan-seared Dover Sole with a savory lemon-caper beurre blanc accompanied by sautéed spinach and basmati rice. I was

fortunate to get a taste of my date’s Veal tenderloin Medallions, sautéed and served with homemade Portobello mushroom ravioli, lightly drizzled with a mushroom sauce and accented with truffle oil. I cannot tell you which entrée was better! Feel free to ask the knowledgeable staff to suggest a wine pairing and if you visit on a Tuesday, all bottled wines, excluding wines listed on the reserve list, are offered at half price! Noticing the theme of lavender throughout the restaurant, from the table’s floral arrangement to the lavender linens, we had to try the Lavender ice cream with Grand Marnier! A superb pairing if you ask me! A special thanks to Bob Allen for making our night memorable by playing everyone’s requests from smooth jazz favorites like “Satin Doll”, to more upbeat selections like The Rolling Stone’s, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”. There is nothing this man won’t perform for you and your guests. Lavender Bistro is open each night from 5:30 PM but come early for Happy Hour at 5:00 PM in the lounge. Don’t forget to make a reservation because the word is out and

Good grub

Dickie O’Neals

“I think the public is misled about the term pub. Pub is short for a Public House. A Public House is a place where everyone is welcome and offers entertainment, alcoholic beverages, and a full menu in a restaurant, with a family and people-friendly atmosphere. A bar typically is a place to drink. There is a difference between a bar and a Pub. Dickie O’Neals is a Pub,” states Joey Leffel, Vice President and Director of Marketing of the establishment. And a fine pub it is. On a recent visit my husband and I had dinner and drinks and were pleasantly surprised by the extensive menu and affordable prices. He had their signature Western Irish Burger, which was cooked to perfection accompanied by delicious shoestring french fries. I went for the crab cakes, which tasted so fresh I felt like we were at the ocean and the crab had been caught that morning. There were three large cakes served on a bed of baby greens. We also split an order of their Buffal’o Chicken Wings which had more meat on them than I’ve ever seen on a chicken wing and were served with ranch dressing and some kickin’ sauce. Our first experience at Dickie O’Neals was so satisfying that we have been back several times since. I highly recommend their fish & chips, which are not dripping in grease like some other places we don’t need to mention. Their homemade spaghetti and meatballs is also a crowd pleaser and is all you can eat every Thursday night for only

6.95 and includes salad and garlic bread. And of course the shrimp Caesar salad is another one of my many favorites. You will have to log on to their website to find out about their amazing Irish Chicken Picnic Special, as it’s too much to even talk about here. Their entire menu is also available “to go.” Dickie O’Neals offers a full bar and have the best $2.00 Bloody Mary’s in town (every day from 7-11am) and friendly bartenders that serve them up. Wednesdays they have $1 beers (Pabst, MGD & Rolling Rock) along with $5 cheese pizzas. They also feature Trivia, 12 large TV screens that host DirecTV Sunday Football Ticket and a smoking patio which they are in the process of renovating. They have karaoke on Fridays and live entertainment on most Saturdays. “Dickie O’Neals Irish Pub is a place where anyone can come and gather for a good time. We do not affiliate ourselves with any one type of guest. Everyone that steps through our doors are treated like a respected guest and welcomed as a friend,” shares owner Michael Farber. “We also recognize that in this economy everyone is watching their pocketbooks and so we are trying to make it affordable for people to go out again.” So if you’re looking for a fun time in a relaxed atmosphere and want to have some good grub then Dickie O’Neals is the place to go.

THE VINO VOICE

Hey! wanna play? Spring is here and already the quest for the best wine deal in the desert is on. So get in the game, attain the goal and embrace the fun, the enlightenment, and the pursuit in developing your own winning strategy of buying, tasting, and enjoying wine to the fullest. All it takes to play is a love for life and the appreciation of its divinely appointed gifts—wine definitely among them. Welcome to your new and friendly wine column. I write to both the beginner and the wine enthusiast and to anyone in between, interested in broadening their knowledge of the fermented juice of the vine. Those who wish to

choose wine intelligently and enjoy it gracefully with food, family, and friends will find that we’ll cover the wine front from vineyard vignettes to vintage wines, local tastings and events, world travels and culture, and back again to simple talk about a tasty table wine. The point of a good game is that it keeps your interest— so the same with wine: The universal test for a good wine is that it is interesting: there’s at least something—if not a lot, going on that causes us to desire more. One of the best news items to report in these times is that there are better and better wines available for better and better

prices. Everyone has their particular likes; fortunately there are a broad range of wines and styles to satisfy them. And there are times for inexpensive wines, and a time to treat yourself to a wonder. It’s pretty hard to lose at this game. Though as in “striking out”, it’s an unfortunate loss when discovering the wine you’ve been holding on to for a special occasion has turned to vinegar. But one can claim a “home run” when a good or great wine for a good price is found. One of the most fascinating aspects to wine appreciation is when a good, very good, or great wine reveals itself, continually evolving throughout the meal with its particular complexities. It’s all intriguing—as with a good game; it warms both the mind and the heart. Generally, bargain wines rarely get to that level, but the ones that do will be written about as

the Wine Deal of the Week. For instance, rosé and rosé sparkling wines are quite delicious, usually wellbalanced with fruit and acidity—and for that very reason go wonderfully with all types of food. One of the best buys in town and the Wine Deal of the Week is the Jaume Cristalino Brut Rosé Cava available at Vons/Pavillons or Bristol Farms for around $7. It compares with any sparkling rosé at three times the price. Cava is a sparkling wine from Catalonia Spain; it is made in the style of a French Champagne. We’ll keep the vino voice up-tempo— pour yourself a nice glass of wine and look for a fun and leisurely read. The beat goes on!...the game’s afoot! CHEERS! CULTURE Body art goes much deeper than images on skin While tattooing has become more mainstream and acceptable in modern-day America, it has yet to completely shake the negative stigma attached to it. An estimated 21 percent of Americans have at least one tattoo, and globally, more than 1 billion people are walking around with some type of body modification or skin art. Therefore, it’s no wonder that tattoos are becoming more accepted. Many successful, intelligent and well-respected men and women enjoy self-expression through the art of tattooing. Tattooing has been around for thousands of years. It has been used in rituals of selfpassage, to identify leaders, as shields of honor, and to mark accomplishments. Today, the art of tattooing has reached a level of expertise and refinement never seen before. Thanks to artists who have perfected techniques in color and realism, we are seeing and enjoying art on skin that was at one time only achievable on canvas.

Art scene The Coachella Valley desert is a breeding ground for creativity and hosts a wide variety of art events on a regular basis. As an artist living and working out of the desert, I feel a certain obligation in keeping up to date with positive and worthwhile events, whether it’s music, art, or performance. Tattoo Power I am directly involved in the tattoo industry and culture, and I’m proud to say that I love every one of my tattoos. Each one of them represents something special—a time, an emotion, a thought, a loved one— that I chose to memorialize and express through the art of tattooing. I have been in the industry for a few years now, and I have had the pleasure of making many friends while hearing stories of love, fear, hardship, loss, selfempowerment, tragedy, joy and sadness. This is the bond that is created while the act and art of tattooing is taking place: People open up and feel empowered to express themselves, not only with the tattoo art itself, but with their words. I have witnessed people open up to loved ones as they hold hands, with tears in their eyes. People reveal themselves. It’s cleansing—primal, yet seductive and honest. Tattooing is a memory, an impression not only on the flesh, but on the mind and soul.

by Joseph Lucero

April 5th at 12 P.M. to 4 P.M. and is open to all ages. By organizing these events Birba’s goal is to create a relationship with artists and business owners, while strengthening community creativity and support. All of the works will be reasonably priced and more accessible to anyone interested. 90% of the proceeds will go to the artists themselves, while 10% will go directly to a local non-profit organization. Local artists being featured are Angela Kinley, Maya Kalabic, Carlos Munoz, Kylie Knight, Robert Medina and artist Reem Branscomb, who will be painting live from the event. All of the works vary in style, content, and size, but are all equally unique and interesting. In addition to the art works, there will also be small sculptures, crafts, and publications for sale. In conjunction with the art, desert DJ, DJ Alf Alpha will be spinning records in between performances by local musicians. Among the performances set to be scheduled are the singer/songwriters, K.C. Bozanich, and the ukulele work of Jessalea Fleischman. Drink and food specials will

A Look at Walter Isaacon’s Biography of Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson (Simon & Schuster) is more than a biography. It is a history book that chronicles the amazing electronic changes to our world over the last several decades. It is a textbook that details a great American business start-up and it’s a guide into an industry that for most is difficult to understand. Steve Jobs died of cancer October 5, 2011. Jobs chose, in fact begged, Isaacson to write his story. Isaacson’s other biographies include Albert Einstein, Ben Franklin and Henry Kissinger, all men of thought, vision and charisma. It may be possible to not know of Steve Jobs, but to not know of the company he helped create, Apple -- would seem impossible. The new iPad3 was released on Friday, March 16 and over that weekend sold more than three million units. The iMac, iPod, iPhone and the iPads, plus iTunes and Apps, have made Apple the world’s most valuable company collecting $16 billion in its last quarter with $100 billion in cash reserves! For many, Steve Jobs was Apple. He was a vegan and Zen Buddhist who, with magical thinking, tapped into what we most wanted. It is as if Jobs designed, manufactured and sold us the products of our dreams single-handedly. Perceived as a wise, eccentric genius adored and glorified like a god, Isaacson shows us the real man. It may come as a surprise, but Jobs was no god and his genius and business acumen questionable. Genius or not, Jobs’ gift was imagining new ways to integrate art and technology. He believed electronic devices should be simple to use, esthetically pleasing and accessible to everyone. Details mattered but costs did not. When he came back to Apple after being ousted, he took a salary of one dollar a year. Money was not his motivation. He and his family had a modest lifestyle with few material things. But Jobs was notoriously blunt to the point

of being rude, obnoxious and mean. People and their work were either “amazing” or “crap”. He demanded perfection, insisted on quality and expected the impossible. According to Steve Wozniak, Jobs first partner, he had an illogical vision of the future. “You realize it can’t be true, but somehow he makes it true.” It became known as Jobs’ “reality distortion field.” Jobs could mesmerize, charm or bully to convince people to work beyond what they assumed was their best. The biography falls short on what really made Jobs tick. Of the 42 chapters, nine deal directly with Jobs personal and private life. The most revealing glimpse of Jobs is when Isaacson scrolls through Jobs private iTunes library and Jobs talks about his love of music. Clearly having a thousand songs in his pocket was a personal passion not just a product. Jobs may have been a jerk, arrogant and even vindictive. But he had good taste, was extremely intuitive and highly creative. With those traits, he changed the world. He did not do it on his own. He did it with other brilliant people. In one of his last interviews with Isaacson, Job admits, “Everything I do depends on other members of our species and the shoulders that we stand on. And a lot of us want to contribute something back to our species.” Jobs gave us Apple. Steve Jobs is a fascinating paradox. A guy who was unmaterialistic gave us our most prized material possessions. He was a peaceloving hippie who was temperamental and controlling. He was flawed, yet his products are near flawless. It was never about the money, yet Apple is flush with it. Even in death it may not be possible to separate Jobs from Apple. The question is, will Apple continue to grow and be fruitful without Jobs? Isaacson’s book suggests that it will. But maybe Isaacson got caught up in Jobs “reality distortion field.” Perhaps that’s not a bad place to be.

As a young lawyer I represented the Bel Air Burglar and these are some of the things that could have saved my neighbors from a theft. On one case he tripped the Alarm and Bel Air Patrol rolled on the scene. He took off all his clothes and mussed up his hair and came to the door with a towel around his waist. He asked if he could help and that he had just come home from back east and must

have tripped the alarm by accident. After that case I refused to handle burglaries etc......... dale gribow. People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan! AKA: You never know who is going to steal from you 1. You should recognize me! I was at your home last week cleaning your carpets, cleaning your pool or delivering your new refrigerator.

2. Thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. That gave me a chance to unlatch the back window to make my return a little easier. 3. If your front entrance has glass, don’t let your alarm company install the control pad there where I can see if it is set. That makes it too easy. 4. Have your security company alarm the window over the sink. In addition alarm the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom - and your jewelry. It’s not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there, too. 5. Do you really think I won’t look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table and the medicine cabinet.

6. A helpful hint: I almost never go into kids’ rooms…..or inside pockets of your suits. 7. You’re right: I won’t have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But, if it’s not bolted down, I’ll take it with me. 8. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. Leave your TV or radio on while you’re out of town, or get a cheap device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. 9. The latest credit card scams involve a server in a restaurant or biz taking your credit card and handing you back another card. If you do not look carefully they will use it and run up large amounts in the next few hours. March 29 to April 4, 2012

Facelifts are so passé. It just isn’t necessary to cut and pull aging skin just because it’s lost some elasticity and volume. We’ve all seen nip and tuck jobs that look like skin pulled too tight over a boney structure, and while the wrinkles may be gone the look of youth is still elusive. Not only are facelifts expensive and painful with quite a bit of down-time, they simply aren’t necessary with the variety of facial fillers on the market. If you’re looking to restore a more youthful appearance, just add volume! Look at a photograph of yourself now and 20 years ago. Most likely the big difference is the elasticity lost and the way your skin used to reflect light. The face of a child is full and glowing, and this more youthful appearance can easily be attained with injectable fillers. A simple series of injections by the right practitioner can bring back vitality to your skin with little to no down-time. However, picking the right doctor and the right filler for your specific needs is imperative. Not all are made equal, so here’s a run down on how to pick the right product for your specific needs. The most popular fillers on the market are made with hyaluronic acid, a substance that already exists naturally in our bodies. These fillers are pretty much suitable for use in any area, and most commonly used around the mouth. Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm are often mixed with Lidocaine to reduce pain during injection and usually last anywhere from

3-6 months. Some products will claim they last 9-12 months, but be wary of such high hopes. The more frequently you have filler treatments, the longer the filler begins to last, but usually the results diminish faster than expected in the beginning. If you’re looking for more long term results, fillers like Sculptra and Radiesse are another great option. Sculptra is derived from a synthetic filler, poly-L-lactic acid and several treatments are required to achieve the desired results over time. The benefit to this is your friends won’t look at you and know immediately you had “work” done. The long term effects will save a lot of money over time as well. Radiesse is another longer lasting filler ideal for naso-labial fold and cheeks. Derived from calcium, Radiesse gives an immediate result that, like Sculptra, stimulates the growth of your own collagen for results that last even longer. Still not sure which filler is right for you? That’s where your doctor’s expertise comes in! You can find a local injector by visiting any one of the the companies websites and searching for a doctor nearby. Always schedule a free cosmetic consultation first and go armed with your questions. Look at the doctor’s before and after photos and ask about their patient testimonials. Don’t be afraid to interview several physicians before you make your decision. After all, it’s your face! Astrological Affects

by Ren Yogamaya

On-Going Astrological Affects:

Sun In Aries Most Affected are Aries and All Fire Signs. For All Signs: All Mars themes such as heat, sex, love and war, patience and haste, growth, passion, courage, integrity and deceit will rule supreme until April 19. A more heightened awareness in passion and urgency in Life. The best side of Aries is seen in their quick action to bring about solutions, their focus on stability and their ability to charm others with their warmth. The key to success is to be of more integrity, to be patient, and to leave justice in the hands of the Universe. We begin a new, astrological year and an auspicious act of the combination of the Vernal Equinox and the Fall Equinox (below the equator) that occur at the same time has occurred. More energy comes forward to assist us in what we need to accomplish. Tap into it with a little Sunbathing, practicing Kundalini Yoga and eating or juicing foods that are of the color red, black and yellow. Best Sacred Geometry: Tetrahedron (Triangle). Best Yantra: The colors Red and Pink.
