“American Pride”

by Lisa Morgan

Displayed at the 48th Annual Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade, Sunday, October 28

It never rains on OUR parade,” boasts Mike Hardin, Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade Chairman. He should know as he and his Lock Shop have participated in the annual parade for the past 36 years. This 48th Annual Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade, themed “American Pride” in honor of the upcoming elections, will be headed westbound on El Paseo between San Luis Rey and Ocoltillo at 1 pm and promises to be even better than years prior. The parade itself, with 85 decorated golf cart entries, is actually the grand finale to a day full of fun, all in celebration of the beautiful city of Palm Desert and its world renowned business community. The day starts with a huge Palm Desert Rotary pancake breakfast at 7:30 am in the Bank of America parking lot. Judging of the golf cart entries will begin at 10 am followed by the award ceremony at 12:30 on the corner of El Paseo and San Luis Rey. Meanwhile, there will be a custom golf cart show with golf cart supply vendors, over 18 different activities for the kids including a bounce house and rock climbing wall, food vendors offering every festival style food you can imagine while Pete Carlson’s Golf will be displaying golf attire, equipment and accessories. Originated in the early 60s, the parade was originally put together by several individuals and local celebrities who just wanted to have fun. The parade didn’t become an annual event until 1983. In those early days, it was “Christmas in July”. The Firecliff Lodge served up turkey

dinners and the carts were all decorated for Christmas. Now of course, the parade is in October, with over 15,000 spectators from around the world as organizers say they are fielding questions about the parade from the Philippines, France, Germany and Japan. Special Senior Seating is being provided by The Auen Foundation*. The reserved FREE seating offers boxed lunches, drinks, raffle prizes and plenty of camaraderie for parade goers over 63-years of age. This seating area opens at 12:30 pm at the northwest corner of El Paseo and San Pablo. Space is only available to the first 300 seniors. A limited number of VIP parking passes and shuttles from designated parking lots are also available. To claim your spot in the Auen Foundation Senior Seating area, contact Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce at 72-559 Highway 111, Palm

Desert, or call (760) 346-6111. Still want special treatment but you’re not a senior? Then purchase Main Street Seats. The $25 VIP seating ticket will reserve you a seat on El Paseo near Larkspur in the shade with a box lunch, snacks and drinks prior to the parade procession. This is your easy access to prime parade seating. No more rush to find a spot as they are all excellent seats. Bring the office staff or the whole family for a group of up to 10. Experience shows us that spaces fill up quickly, so please reserve as soon as possible. The Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce and City of Palm Desert have worked diligently over the past six months, side by side a committee of over 20 volunteers who are instrumental in making the parade a reality. Make sure you do not miss this incredibly fun and social event that brings local businesses and the community together in celebration of our unique and beautiful desert city. *The Auen Foundation, presenting sponsor, is a private, family foundation dedicated to enhancing the overall quality of life of the aging population and raising awareness of the precious-end-of-life stage. The Foundation supports charitable programs and services aimed at meeting the social needs of mature adults and their families.

Afghanistan, August 31: As our MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle) made its way through the base exit, our vehicle commander radioed that we had cleared the check point, while our turret gunner began his vigilant and systematic sweep of the changing area around the convoy. In my head I thought, “Just like training”; just like training with the exception that here any scenario was real and there were no actors or blanks in anyone’s weapon system. Bounding along the dirt road toward our destination, we were aware of the roar of the engine, the constant “click, click, click” of the turret gunners carriage. Looking past the gunner, whose only visible parts were his legs and torso, the crew had placed only three items on the dash, a testament to their importance. In the window, were two sheets of paper, one pasted above the other. The lower was a white procedure card for calling in help in the event we found ourselves under attack. The yellow card above it, a “9 Line”, the procedure card for calling in a casualty evacuation team in case any of us were wounded. The final item was a white cross dangling from the dash and bouncing to the rhythm of the vehicles movement. Two cards and a cross that was all. A reminder to all our crew and passengers of the potential instant need for an appeal to heaven: “Help us. Heal us. Protect us.” And so we moved on quiet in the vehicle, save for the occasional radio communication, the clicking of the turret gun, each of us moving together and at the same time alone potentially through our own valley of the shadow of death. Finally through another check point and onto the relative safety of another base, the turret gunner, no more than 19 or 20 years old, came down from his position and gave us all this huge grin – reminding us all that, once again, our deliverer had seen us safe to another journey’s end and that on this day, only one of the three resources on that dash, perhaps the most utilized, whether posted or not in this combat theatre, had been used that day. Afghanistan, October 7, 2012: The

young Army Specialist had just pulled the chow hall check in duty. On this night, his task for the nation simply included making certain everyone signed in for dinner and scanned their ID Cards. For me, the chair next to him was a great vantage point to greet everyone coming into dinner on this forward operating base. And so began a pattern of greeting people interspersed with hearing about his life and dreams. As we sat together he spoke of learning languages, including Italian from the troops surrounding him, wondering about staying in the Army or going to college or maybe both and coming back in as an officer. In the midst of this, he spoke of the busy-ness of the deployment here and how limited study time had been with him so often in the field. Like the other day when the vehicle in front of him was “blown up” (the term used here for everything from a catastrophic hit to one going off under you) by an IED (Improvised Explosive Device). That IED explosion was followed almost immediately by one behind him, and so the convoy pushed forward. “Then we got blown up,” he said. “What was that like?” I asked. He said, “Well, fire on both sides of the vehicle, with us bouncing up like we hit a big rock and all the wind getting knocked out of you like you were punched.” Then

he looked at me in all seriousness and said, “Kinda like being in the middle of a video game, except not.” And with that, he resumed his conversation about going home and dreams for the future. Hmmm, “except not”. As I pondered that, I thought, “Sure. That is a mind trying to make sense, to categorize, to explain, what will be unexplainable when he gets home; to continue to dream for the future and plan and hope, even while dreams of the past, of near misses and being in the middle of a living video game, ‘except not’,

become part of his story and who he is As they come home, may God grant each young person with so much of life ahead, peaceful slumber, hopeful dreams for the future and understanding arms to embrace them when such fly from them with the memories of the past of Afghanistan.” — forwarded with permission by Chaplain Frank Riley, LTC, USNR from somewhere near the Afghanistan/Pakistan border. United States Naval Reserve Lieutenant Commander, Frank Riley was deployed to Afghanistan August 2012. He left his home, family and a church that calls him “Pastor Frank” to serve on the front lines in Afghanistan as an unarmed chaplain to America’s finest. Frank, a very dear friend of mine since our college days, has given me permission to share his stories. They are a stark reminder of everyday life for these men and women. Please remember them and their families as we enjoy with gratitude, our everyday freedoms in this beautiful country of ours. It is the only way to truly say thank you every day. If you have a story from the “Front Lines” of people making a difference in service be it military, volunteer organization, police, fire department or the like, please contact me at lisa@coachellavalleyweekly.com. We would like to share their story.

appy Halloween! Every kid we’ve ever known, including yours truly, has always been afraid of the dark, of things that go bump in the night and sounds too eerie to describe, too horrible to hear through human ears, such as “cackling” which is forbidden this month. (Too Biden.) Yet, with the election on November 6 looming, we’ve heard that “Big Bird” is the costume of the year---the result of campaign feathers flying debate fall-out---and polls are show that we may be turning the fear factor into the fun factor for the party, perhaps both parties, as it were. At least, we’d like to look at it this way. So, dress as you imagine yourself, or as you want to be, draw couture-ish inspiration from a century, a character, or a creature by a mash-up from your own closet or jump a broom and head to a “Boo-tique.” Go ahead on October 31, freak your pals out! Go viral on your social network! Now that’s scary!

Hey, honey-bunny, we know the hour is early but swirl your mascara on tight because here’s your chance to be one of six Girls of Playboy Golf who will represent the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino during key events for one year! Tonight! Thursday, October 25, 7:30pm. The locally produced film I Didn’t Come Here to Die will be shown one night only at the Camelot Theater in Palm Springs. Produced by desert residents Kim Waltrip and Jim Casey, the savvy heads of Kim and Jim Productions, the film is a story of 6 young do-gooders working on a humanitarian project in the deep, dark, deceptively beautiful forest who conclude after horrifying accidents (maybe-maybe not), rash and perhaps naïve decisions, and “the unpredictability of human nature” (Duh!), that “volunteer work can be a killer!” Waltrip, a Palm Springs Women in Film member and receiver of the Desert Diva Award at the organization’s Broken Glass Awards (upcoming March 1, 2013) has garnered critics’ awards and global exposure for her films--- Adopt A Sailor, Visiting, Expecting Mary, A Thousand Cuts and Outrun--- at the world’s leading film festivals. Tickets at the door, $7 and $11. 2300 East Baristo Road Palm Springs, 760325-6565. Friday, October 26, 3pm. Singer, Actress, Civil rights activist, dancer, icon and legend (whew, what a woman!), Lena Horne will be honored with a shining star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars for its 348th dedication ceremony. After retiring in 1980, she starred in a one-woman show, Lena Horne: the Lady and Her Music which ran for more than 300 performances on Broadway receiving many awards and accolades. Spending many happy years in Palm Springs with her husband, Lennie Hayton, she died in 2010 at 93 years of age. More info at www.palmspringswalkofstars. com Saturday, October 27, 9am – 2pm. It’s the fourth year of monthly community drum circles and you are encouraged to get in to Halloween costume and bring a percussive instrument from tympani to triangle to tambourine, from bucket to bongos to big bass drum. “Our drum circles are always lots of fun! Dress wildly!’ Says Sloneker, reminding us that when the sun and moon pull in the opposing directions with Earth in the middle, we are energized, as well as a mite unbalanced and “playing together in our circle” helps to ground and center us. No charge, but a suggested donation of $5 per participant, $10 per family is appreciated. Location: 59700 Twentynine Palms HWY. Info, call 760-365-8371. “Don’t Be Clueless” wants to remind you that press releases for inclusion should be in to the Coachella Valley Weekly at least two weeks ahead of the scheduled event! T

SAME AS IT EVER WAS

he political attack by Mary Bono Mack against Raul Ruiz appears to be one of the most negative in recent memory here in the Coachella Valley. If you have not been paying attention, Bono Mack accused Ruiz of being a radical and backed up her claim by producing an audiotape of Ruiz supporting Leonard Pelletier, a Native American who went to jail for killing two FBI agents. Native American groups are lambasting Bono Mack for what they believe is a misleading attack on Ruiz who they feel was simply expressing youthful concerns over the imprisonment of Pelletier - a trial that Amnesty International classifies as “unfair”. In the presidential campaign, the Obama team has aired an ad stating that Joe Soptic lost his wife to cancer because of Mitt Romney and his old firm, Bain Capital. The problem with this attack piece is that Soptic’s wife was diagnosed with cancer five years after the factory he worked for closed. Those opposed to Obama have constantly

accused him of being a closet Muslim, a secret agent of the Muslim brotherhood, a friend and disciple of extremists and radicals, a socialist and/or communist while questioning his citizenship. While people generally scorn negative attacks, this approach continues because it works. When people say that the current campaign is the worst or dirtiest ever, it shows how most negative attack ads are forgotten over time. Remember 1988 when Bush 41 accused Michael Dukakis of giving weekend parole passes to killers where one killed during his weekend pass? That ad is credited for giving Bush 41 the victory. Bush 43 was successful in beating back a primary challenge by John McCain by claiming that McCain fathered a black child out of wedlock. This blatant lie was key to his winning the nomination and eventually the Presidency. About 125 years earlier when Abraham Lincoln ran for President, his opponents called him “ape-like” in a rude double

Desert DJ’s

entendre that referred to his height as well as his support for the abolishment of slavery. In one of America’s earliest elections, John Adams (Adams 2) supporters predicted that if Thomas Jefferson was elected, “murder, robbery, rape, adultery, and incest will be openly taught and practiced.” Not to be outdone, Jefferson supporters stated that Adams wanted to return America to a monarchy - a touchy subject so early in our Democracy. Adams supporters countered by saying that Jefferson was a misogynist who had sex with one of his black slaves - a claim later proven to be true. A few years later when Adam’s son, John Quincy Adams (Adams 6), ran for President against Andrew Jackson, he accused Jackson of being a hothead for challenging and killing so many people via duels, a reasonable claim given Jackson’s penchant for duels. Jackson’s wife was also brought into things as she may not have divorced another man before marrying Jackson - a claim later

proven to be accurate. In response to the bigamist charge, the Jackson camp accused Adams 6 of being the “pimp” of American girls while serving as the U.S. envoy to Russia. While Adam’s won the first contest in 1824, Andrew Jackson won the rematch four years later although at a steep price. You see, his wife died of a heart attack before the inauguration with her death attributed to the stress of a campaign filled with lies and libelous character attacks. In an interesting sidenote to the 1824 election, defenders of the status quo were called National Republicans while those looking for change were called Democratic Republicans. For as much as things change, things are the same as they ever were.

DJ Ray expects BB’s Halloween Bash this year to be the biggest and best R

ay Phillips is one of the few DJs who was born and raised here in the Coachella Valley. Spending much of his youth in Palm Desert, Ray eventually graduated from Indio High School. At the age of 16, Ray got his first job in the drapery and upholstery business which he still works at today. Ray decided to settle down when he met his wife Addison and it wasn’t too long until he found himself looking to make some extra income to support his new wife and soon to be daughter. Ray had a long-time friend and DJ, Norm Thompson, (A.K.A. DJ Norm-i-licious,) who was his first influence into the DJ world. Soon Ray was working on gigs with Norm and quickly became hooked. From there Ray continued to train with a well know local DJ company called California DJ, (owner Michael Cap of California DJ has been

previously featured in my column.) By the time he reached his late 20’s Ray and his friend Norm decided to form their own mobile DJ company. Eventually Norm went in another direction and Ray would continue with his company he owns and operates today called: Real Sound Production. With fierce competition, Ray knew he needed to set himself apart and began to increase his knowledge and use of state-of-the art equipment. Taking pride in his craft, Ray continually strives to improve, “I’m constantly keeping up with the latest music and I am constantly DJing with other DJ’s and learning from them,” Ray emphasizes. Being a life-long desert rat, Ray knows or has worked with many of the local promoters including the king of them all, B B Ingle, who is famous for his extravagant parties dating back to B B O’Brian’s Sports

bar in the early 90’s. Ray’s talents have been tapped into for many of B B’s parties which get bigger every year with the last one leaving an impression on the veteran DJ, “the New Year’s Eve Party of this past year was the most memorable, the crowd was electric and the energy on my dance floor was the best I have ever seen at a BB party,” Ray recalls with excitement. Ray goes on to comment about performing at the upcoming Halloween party with B B this weekend, “I am expecting this Halloween party on the 27th to top any of the other parties because this party will be taken to a new level. There will be more genres of music than ever before. As a matter of fact, there will be a Hip Hop room for the first time in the history of these parties.” Ray is in charge of sound and lighting for B B’s party this weekend and with 27 DJs in eight rooms, that’s no

small task. Aside from DJing, Ray promotes and produces some shows of his own, such as the El Dorado Rock Concert and the Rock for Isaiah Benefit concert, to name a few. Ray has also had the pleasure of working with artists such as The Hives, Fishbone, Dr. Dog, and Kyuss Lives, (now known as Vista Chino.) If you would like to see Ray perform at B B’s Halloween Bash this Saturday at the Palm Springs Convention Center, you can get your tickets at: www.partywithbb.com or you can buy them at the door for $20. If you would like to contact Ray to play at your event you can reach him at Real Sound Productions: (760) 497-8900. Written By: Craig Michaels Musical Affair Entertainment (760) 619-3276

Mercer. The mellow melody belies this stinging war of words. Mann and Mercer trade corrosive verses, Mercer blasts the first sarcastic salvo: “You can see yourself in the side mirror, tossing your hair/If no one is there, why do you care?” Mann lobs her own verbal grenade, “No one bears a grudge like a boy genius just past his prime/ Gilding his cage one bar at a time.” It seems Pat Benatar was right, Love IS a

Battlefield! On the latter, twitchy guitar riffs and other-worldly synths collide giving the song an 80s patina. The Sci-Fi lyrics serve as an allegory for an imploding romance. Other stand out tracks include the piano-driven “Labrador.” This introspective tune draws a fine line between loyalty and gullibility. Hushed harmonies and a breezy melody camouflage the emotional torment within “Gumby.” Finally, “Crazytown” is not a tribute to the crap-tastic Rap-Rock band. Instead it’s a brisk and propulsive rocker, with a plot straight out of Hitchcock Noir. Charmer closes with “Red Flag Diver.” Here Mann abandons her almost journalistic yarn-spinning for a jaunty bit of jabberwocky. It’s a refreshing finish. Like a sorbet after an expansive seven course meal. In the tradition of Lennon & McCartney, Elvis Costello and Difford & Tilbrook from Squeeze, Aimee Mann crafts songs that are impossibly catchy, literate and immensely satisfying. Pithy and concise, Charmer is a worthy addition to Aimee Mann’s considerable body of work.

then, I found the lifestyle wasn’t for me. I was at the end of a relationship, broken hearted, my career wasn’t taking off, and I was at a crossroad in my life.” Benise never lost faith in himself and never lost the passion to follow his dreams. While listening to the radio one day he heard the intriguing sound of the Spanish guitar. “I heard the Spanish guitar performed by guitarist Marc Antoine. I had never heard anything like it before, it was beautiful. It changed my life.” He then put all his electric guitars in the closet, and concentrated on playing the Spanish guitar. He tried to find work as a Spanish guitarist in some of the local restaurants and night clubs, but was told that it sounded like elevator music and they weren’t interested. Taking the bull by the horns, as they say, in 1999, Benise took his act to the streets of Los Angeles and performed with some

resented by the McCallum Theatre and KJJZ’s Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald, Spanish guitarist, Benise, kicks off the 14th year of concerts for “Fitz’s Jazz Cafe” on Friday, November 2, at 8 p.m. in “Benise - En Fuego!” at the McCallum Theatre, 73-000 Fred Waring Drive in Palm Desert. Tickets are available on-line at www. McCallumTheatre.com or call the box office at (760) 340-2787. Born and raised in the Midwest with two older sisters, Benise started playing guitar when he was eleven. “I remember that I just felt like I needed to play the guitar,” said Benise. “I was glad my parents bought me one. I could feel the guitar calling me to express my feelings, but I do not come from a musical family.” A natural performer and musician, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a musical career. “I was playing Rock and Roll when I moved to California. The slow and mournful “Slip and Roll” employs a boxing metaphor to detail the inexorable slide into an emotional abyss. The best songs on Charmer are “Living A Lie” and “Gamma Ray.” The former is a duet with Shins and Broken Bells front man James

AIMEE MANN “Charmer” Aimee Mann first burst on the scene in 1985 as leader of the Boston band, til’ tuesday. Their unique and ubiquitous single, “Voices Carry” was a huge hit on Top 40 radio and the video played endlessly on MTV. Standing out on the midst of fluffy 80s pop, the song was an unflinching look at domestic violence. Although til’ Tuesday broke up after three albums, Mann carried on as a critically acclaimed solo artist. Her solo debut, Whatever (1993) and the follow up, I’m With Stupid (1996), met with modest commercial success. Unfortunately she was plagued with Record label woes. By the late 90s, Mann married fellow musician Michael Penn and created a soundtrack for the film “Magnolia.” One song from the movie, “Save Me ,” received an Academy Award nomination for Best Song. Despite the fact that she lost to Phil Collins’ drippy “You’ll Be In My Heart,” (from the Disney film “Tarzan”) the recognition allowed Mann to terminate her contract with Geffen Records and start her own label, Superego. Her newest effort, Charmer, is Mann’s seventh release through Superego. The album opens with the beguiling title track. Powered by a swirling mellotron and a martial beat, the lyrics reveal that even most cynical manipulators face devastating insecurities: “When You’re a charmer, the world applauds/ They don’t know that secretly charmers feel like frauds.” Mann’s forte as a songwriter is her attention to detail. She consistently combines vivid storytelling with pure pop melodies. Despite the loping groove, “Soon Enough” burrows deep into a failed romance. Deflecting the pain, Mann offers

friends, for fun. It caught the attention of almost everyone who heard him. “People would come up to us and ask if we had any CDs for sale with original music. So I had to put a CD together and we sold so many, I could hardly keep them in stock. I fused my Rock and Roll roots with the Spanish guitar and it became my own unique style.” From 2000 until 2005, Benise performed with his band at the corner of Tahquitz and South Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs every Thursday night during the Street Fair. “This is sort of like a homecoming for us. We performed every other week and sold a lot of CDs.” I remember seeing Benise perform there with his 5 piece band, and I’m sure, many of you will remember him as well. “It is because of the support from our fans that we were able to quit our daytime jobs and devote all of our time to our music. Then we started doing concerts and PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) took notice and we went National. It all started in Southern California and especially in Palm Springs.” In 2005, his show, “Nights of Fire” choreographed by Alexandre Magno, won an Emmy Award for Best Costumes. “We won the Emmy for basically the Best Dressed Band in the World,” he said laughing. “We have a very multi-cultural cast of dancers and musicians from Brazil, India, Cuba, France, Mexico and the United States.” If you watch his YouTube video of “Nights of Fire” or “The Spanish Guitar” you will see all the beautiful costumes and the spectacular cast of dancers and musicians that make

this a very unique experience, suitable for the entire family. “We just finished our third show, ‘Live From China’ for PBS.” His appearance at the McCallum will feature the best of all three shows he has produced as World One Music, along with performing some of his favorite Classic Rock and Roll songs like “Kashmir”, “Thunderstruck” and “Hotel California”, with a Latin flair., of course. The show will take you on a journey of music and dance through Spanish Flamenco, Cuban Salsa, African Rhythms, Argentine Tango, and Brazilian Samba. He produced, arranged and released eight CDs on his independent record label, Rosanegra Music, and three DVDs on Rosanegra Films. “I really think we have something for everyone. I hope that people will be inspired, by our story, the music, the production and have the passion to follow their own dreams.” On a personal note, my husband Johnny Meza and I were performing at the Siena Hotel, Spa and Casino in Reno, Nevada, for musicians Shirley and Sergio Villegas in July of 2011. One afternoon, their booking agent, Maryse Nicole, was having lunch with Benise and introduced us. I am looking forward to seeing this talented performer on the McCallum stage. The Los Angeles Times calls his show, “The Latin Riverdance!” and you will agree. I remember a card from a long time ago, it read, “Dream the impossible, for impossible dreams can come true.” Benise is living his dream.

The Cat Clinic

oachella Valley cats recently celebrated the opening of their own special veterinary clinic in Cathedral City. The Cat Clinic is an amazing cat-only facility specially designed for the unique psychological well being and medical needs of our feline friends. When you enter the quiet serene waiting room there are no barking dogs! Tastefully decorated with colorful Laurel Burch wooden cats, the state-of-the-art clinic exudes a calm healing ambiance. Two adorable homeless kittens play quietly in a large enclosure. This is the only Coachella Valley clinic that serves cats exclusively. the balmy tropics of Guam. In what proved to be a life changing experience, she found 2 motherless puppies and delivered them to Guam Animals in Need. Soon she was volunteering for this humane animal welfare organization. She became acutely aware of the plight of homeless animals and the lack of quality medical care for them. That led to a return to college and a new career as a veterinarian, a avocation that meshed well with her love of science and animals. Dr. Diaz never forgot the conditions of and the overpopulation problem of unwanted animals in poor countries. Today her life is a balance of high end veterinary practice at the Cat Clinic combined with community service to neglected creatures. Her mission to help animals in need often takes her to third world countries. Dr. Diaz taught spay and neuter techniques to veterinary students in El Salvador. Later this year she returns to Panama to work with Spay Panama, a group that provides affordable sterilization and medical care. The group also goes into the rural Panamanian mountain areas, setting up an improvised clinic and performing between 300 and 400 spay and neuters in a weekend. The vets donate their time, sleep in sleeping bags, and work from 6:00 am until 10:00 pm at night. During my visit, Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter brought in ten stray adult cats and kittens to be spayed and neutered. The Cat Clinic has a special arrangement with the group, and these surgeries are often quickly scheduled dependant on the animals’ capture. Dr. Diaz explained how Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)

operates to stop the breeding cats from moving into the sterilized cats territory. The spayed cats have the advantage as they are healthier and can focus their attention on the food supply. How did cats become her favorite animal? Dr. Diaz is quick to respond, “First of all, I can’t look at one without thinking it’s the cutest thing in the world. Secondly, they are misunderstood animals. You have to have a special feel for cats, they are a lot more circumspect and require gentler handling than dogs. I certainly like dogs and had a wonderful dog for 16 years, but I grew up from the age of 3 with a cat and have a special affinity for them. You need

ifty years ago the Napa and Sonoma Valleys were the “new” wine sweetheart locales where the world came to the Tuscan-like landscape and made world class wines. Soon everyone will again take notice of another world class wine region that has emerged: Lake County, California. So we all rolled up to wine and dine at Escena’s Lounge & Grill’s wine-dinner finale for their 2nd annual wine pairing dinner series that featured the exquisite wines of Lake County’s beautiful Shannon Ridge Winery. For those who may be unfamiliar with Shannon Ridge Vineyards and Winery or with any of the wonderful vineyards of the Lake County region—well, you’ve probably already enjoyed wine made from grapes

to get to know cats. They are not overly demonstrative, but they do love their owners.” Dr. Diaz is pictured here bottle feeding 5 week old Beamer. How do cats and their owners benefit from having their own vet clinic? Dr. Diaz explains, “I wanted a cat clinic where there wouldn’t be loud noises including dog barking that stresses them out. When the owners come here to visit a hospitalized cat, they report their cats seem happy and responsive rather than stressed and withdrawn.” Focusing on cats exclusively allows a vet to develop greater expertise in their treatment. What advice does Dr. Diaz have for cat owners? “Cats need to stay inside. There are coyotes in the desert. Cats go missing all the time, so please microchip them. Only 1 in 10 cats who end up in shelters are returned home, but this increases to 7 out of 10 when they are microchipped.” All the finest medical care awaits Fluffy at the Cat Clinic. They have their own laboratory, digital x-ray machine, digital dental x-ray machine, ultrasound equipment, a state of the art surgical ward, and oxygen is piped in from the ceiling. Their website www.CatCityCat.com contains a wealth of information about feline health. The Cat Clinic is located at 67870 Vista Chino, Cathedral City, and you can contact them at (760) 325-3400. grown there. Napa County wineries for a long while have and continue to source so many varieties of the mountain area fruit. In Lake County, Clear Lake is the oldest fresh water lake in North America! and there’s the rocky red volcanic soil around Mt. Konocti. The unique combination of altitude, climate, and soils plus the careful selection of winegrape varieties has resulted in a nearly perfect union of site and variety. The result is an intensity of place that produces grapes and wines of compelling quality and character. And now, dear wine lovers, you can be the first on your block to be talking up the beautiful landscape and wines of Lake County as the “new Napa”! Surrounded by dramatic landscapes and pristine wilderness, the Shannon Ridge vineyards hug the mountain rim along the south-east edge of Lake County’s High Valley wine region. And speaking of dramatic landscapes, do we need to be reminded that one of the best panoramic views of the mountains surrounding our valley serves as a backdrop while we enjoy Escena’s cuisine. Inside the dining room or outside on the patio, I’m always amazed at the majestic view of the mountains that puts you in the mood to enjoy a nice slice of life. Escena Lounge & Grill’s Food & Beverage director, Elise Arouh, has done just a superb job of providing us vino lovers throughout the summer with Escena’s culinary charms of matching delicious meals to the world class wines of the most notable of wineries. And the $50 wine dinner tab proved

there was no better deal in town! But all good things do come to an end and we really enjoyed this food fare finale with Elise, Chef William and Shannon Ridge’s representative, Brenda Bullington. Brenda was a hoot! And when she introduced herself at the start of the dinner, she got all us diners to indeed shout out a loud hoot! Thereafter we all settled comfortably continuing to enjoy and chat about the tasty food & wine match up. And there was no better time to have introduced Escena’s new Executive Chef, William Withrow. He’s got a great bio! Moved to the Loire Valley at an early age and trained at the School of Culinary Arts in France where he refined his understanding of not only French cooking, but a variety of other international cuisines. A classical & modern artist in the kitchen, Chef William’s culinary passion is already known in our

valley’s kitchens such as Cuistot. The salad course starred Shannon Ridge’s Lake County 2011 Chardonnay that was crisp and refreshing and yet owned aromas and flavors of pear, green apple, tropical fruit and creamy vanilla! Chef William’s made his culinary presence felt immediately with his Poached Pear Salad with Mixed Organic Greens, Fresh Roasted Beets and Goat Cheese with a Passion Fruit Vinaigrette. This was one of the most delicious salads I’ve had all year. Elegant and artful, the goat cheese and tangy vinaigrette danced wonderfully on the chilled dish of beets and greens. The Chardonnay complemented exquisitely: It’s a pairing to always keep in mind. And I hope the Chef continues this salad throughout the year. For the Entrée, we had a choice between the Slow Roasted Baby Back Ribs that paired with Shannon’s 2011 Wrangler Red, or, the Skuna Bay Salmon matched with the single vineyard, Morine Ranch 2009 Roussanne. The Wrangler Red blend was right up my alley with Zinfandel, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, from Shannon Ridge’s highelevation ultra-premium Lake County vineyards. The ribs were meaty and the wine was balanced to match fruit to the sauce and cleansing to the palate. The Roussanne rewarded the salmon with a bouquet of tropical fruit, lychee, and cola, and with flavors of Passion fruit and citrus. An elegant wine that was full-bodied with a long finish. Tasty stuff! And for dessert, we had the first Pumpkin Ginger Crème Brulée of the season served with a 2011 Sauvignon Blanc. This multilayered white, was crisp with aromas of lemon citrus and flavors of tangerine and lemon grass. No need for a dessert wine here for this semi-sweet course. Brenda— that was a yummy call! T’was a nice lively and citrusy change to the pumpkin pastry. Fun Food Finale! So let’s get another party started—and start pouring for your friends and guests these delicious Shannon Ridge Wines which can be found at LQ Wines in La Quinta, Jensen’s in Palm Desert & Palm Springs, and Desert Wines & Spirits in Palm Springs. Cheers! Rick is the valley’s “sommelier-abouttown” and continues to host & entertain at wine tastings & events. Contact winespectrum@aol.com

manchego cheese, avocado, red and yellow peppers and chopped cilantro. Served with fennel and rosemary potatoes and toast, this dish was incredible! I decided to try The American Scramble which includes cheddar, applewood smoked bacon, tomato and green and red peppers. Our meals were filling, full of flavor, and affordable. The service is spot on! I did not have to ask for anything and the staff is always smiling and attentive! The owner, Mike, was generous enough to let us try some fresh flaky croissants and crispy baguettes with a most delicious fruit infused butter. This was a real treat for us both. Mike also told us that the restaurant uses the freshest of ingredients and uses organic products. “We don’t even have a freezer,” he continued. Having lived in this valley since the late 1980’s, I am impressed with the quality of food, paired with excellent service. The menu includes a variety of breakfast favorites and lunch items like salads, paninis and their famous French onion soup, which I will be returning for very soon! hile I often feature a fine dining restaurant, usually offering dinner service only, I was so impressed with a recent breakfast experience that I felt compelled to share. Now that the weather is dropping from what felt like a never ending summer, I felt the urge to visit downtown Palm Springs for a bite to eat before shopping along the strip. I happened upon a small eatery known as Café Europa. Open for breakfast and lunch only, and boasting a fresh and organic menu with French flair, this bistro-style restaurant has become a new favorite. My close friend joined me for the day and we strolled through The Corridor before finding this restaurant. This outdoor courtyard has Mt. San Jacinto for its backdrop and is full of lush greenery and benches for sitting and taking in the beauty of Palm Springs. We enjoyed the view almost as much as we enjoyed our meal. We were seated immediately and were offered a beverage. We started with fresh French-pressed coffee that would rival the best coffee shops in town! If I had left with only having a cup of this coffee, I would have been quite pleased, but fortunately for me, we were able to try some breakfast specialties. My guest ordered one of their most popular items on the breakfast menu, according to the owner. The Spanish Scramble is made from three Organic Omega 3 eggs and includes Spanish chorizo,

The World Needs Art” and Stark + Kent Galleries is doing their part to bring a very thoughtful and unique collection to ours. This brand new contemporary art gallery just recently opened their doors in May of this year in beautiful down town Palm Springs, and will be celebrating their Grand Opening, Saturday, October 27 from 4 to 10 pm. Their interactive and open arm approach to draw in artists whose work they feel is original, rings of authenticity and has a strong presence is the foundation on which they have built a truly personal gallery experience. The pieces have each been chosen to work together as a whole and to create a balanced and cohesive space. Stark + Kent is the culmination of what both men feel is a lifelong passion for creativity and artistic expression. Co-owner, Mike Soltis, an artist himself, says that it is their joint desire to support artists so they can continue to pursue their artistic endeavors. He knows what it’s like

to have to face the many closed doors in the industry and hopes to provide a more inviting forum for fellow artists. This compassion and their mission as a gallery are clearly reflected in their letter to aspiring artists on their website, starkandkent.com. It reads: “Dear Artist, we love experiencing new art and meeting artists we’ve not seen before. So please send us a link to your website so that we can see images of your work and get a sense of who you are. We are committed to the artists we currently represent in our gallery and intentionally partner with a limited number in order to adequately support them. However, we would like to hear from you. We’re always open to considering an artist we think we can help and who would be a good fit. We would love the opportunity to showcase new and exciting work to the residents and visitors of Palm Springs and the surrounding desert communities. We encourage you to continue to create, to explore and to express yourself through your work. The world needs you. - Ross and Mike” For visitors to the gallery, Ross and Mike have created a place in which everyone from the established art collector to those with limited exposure to the arts can find something that stimulates and intrigues them. “Something transcendent happens when someone connects with a piece of art. Whether it is a painting, a sculpture, a piece of music, performance - it changes them. The hope at Stark and Kent is that visitors experience that connection. And in turn, the artists will be inspired to continue bringing to life all that is inside, because the world needs them to. The world needs art.” Owners Ross Rhodes and Mike Soltis are ecstatic about the warm reception they’ve experienced from the City of Palm Springs, its good people and wonderful neighboring business owners and invite everyone to

celebrate with them at their grand opening from 4 – 10 pm. Several of the artists whose works are displayed will be present making this a once in a lifetime opportunity for any art enthusiast. Catering will be provided by neighboring Zin American Bistro from 4-7pm. Stark + Kent Gallery is located at 192 S Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs. For more information on the gallery, the artists and works being displayed go to www. starkandkent.com or call Mike and Ross at (760) 778-8988.

Movie Reviews with Robin E. Simmons

BOO!

For years, I’ve posted or published a “Do It Yourself Halloween Horror Film Fest” that’s just about exhausted the best as well as the most obscure (but still cool) horror films from the earliest days of cinema to the present. Home video distributor Mill Creek has been in the business of collecting mostly public domain films and making them available in low cost collection of 50, 100 and even 250 titles. In these harder economic times, here are three collections of cheesy, camp, retro and artistic gems of varying quality. Each collection contains 12 discs and between 3,600 and 4,200 minutes viewing pleasure. I’ve seen these collections for sale in stores (try Record Alley at Westfield) and online for about $10. Dirt cheap by any standard. There’s something here for everyone from classics, B-movie, cult and schlock. Creatures, ghosts, madmen (and women) run amok in this instant library of unsettling cinema. Yes, there are some overlaps and duplications of titles, but so what? (Maybe you’ll want to see it twice?). A few of the many stars included: John Barrymore, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney (Sr and Jr), Jack Nicholson, Ginger Rogers, Vincent Price, Dean Jagger, Boris Karloff, John Carradine, Max Schreck, Mike Conners, Richard Carlson, Robert Reed, Turhan Bay, Barbara Steele, Charles Laughton, Peter Lorre and the ever-popular George Zucco. I wish there were space enough to elaborate on some of the offbeat and obscure titles as well as display some of the very cool vintage poster art that was created for the titles when they were first released in theaters. Reading all of the titles included in the various collections does give you a true feeling of the tine and subject of the films -- as well as the cheese ball factor. But this is not a case of caveat emptor by any means.

Halloween Roundup

October 25 to October 31, 2012

by Philip Lacombe

Thursday, October 25:

BABES IN TOYLAND

When people ask, What’s the scariest movie of all time? I always reply that, for me, it’s Laurel & Hardy’s MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS (AKA BABES IN TOYLAND). This beautiful, brilliant, feverdream of a movie adapted from Victor Herbert’s operetta “Babes in Toyland,” delves dangerously into an alternate world hallucinatory madness. Dum (Stan) and Dee (Ollie) are Santa’s toymakers preparing for the big delivery on Christmas Eve. Mother Goose and nursery rhyme characters are all over the place and Stan and Ollie are in constant trouble (“Is that 100 six-foot toy soldiers or 600 onefooters?”) Silas Barnaby, (remember “the meanest man in town”?), Bo Peep (she’s being forced into marriage by Silas or he will evict Bo’s mom, who is in fact The Old Woman In The Shoe). And there’s Tom Tom the Piper’s Son (Ms Peep’s true love) and the big finale with the creepy attack of the Bogeymen. This classic has been cleaned up, digitally remastered and colorized. Yes, the great Crayola hues are a huge plus. It looks about as perfect as the best of old style children’s book illustrations and I bet Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy would have wanted this one in color if there had been the budge for it. However, this Fauvistic children’s fable implies all kinds of dark, psychologically unsettling themes. For those who dare to read between the lines (or movie frames), this film can be seen as a sly and subversive horror fest that plumbs deeply disturbing psychological and political issues rarely dared in contemporary films. I am amazed that someone hasn’t examined this in detail and I have often wondered how much of it may have been intentional -- perhaps from the brilliantly demented mind of Stan Laurel. Just know that only on the surface is this a children’s Christmas movie. So here’s my suggestion: If you only have time for one scary movie after trick or treating, see this one the way I’m convinced it was meant to be seen – on a sugar rush, in color and on Halloween! 1934. osie’s Kids is hosting its 2nd annual wine and cheese tasting fundraiser in the 12th Floor Wine Bar at Fantasy Springs. Come sip delicious wine and enjoy cheese while listening to an amazing young jazz artist. This year, participants will be treated to the music of 14 year old jazz saxophonist, Christopher Astoquillca who is quickly becoming a recognized young name on the music scene. Astoquillca attends the Ramon Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts in Los Angeles. He plays multiple instruments

including piano, guitar, flute, percussion and clarinet but will be showcasing his skills on the sax. At such a young age, Astoquillca already builds arrangements for big band artists and is now starting to build his own musical compositions as well. Rosie’s Kids strives to make extracurricular activities more affordable for children and their families. Rosie Welmas, founder of Rosie’s Kids, says her organization was started because of the need she saw first hand while coaching a group of children’s cheerleading squads.

Crater Lake Chef Challenge LOVE III LOOKS TO PLAY WAY W

by Mike Livingston

by Raymond Bill

ith the competition nearing a close, the Crater Lake Chef Challenge is heating up and the chefs are managing to create the most impressive dishes in limited time. Now that we are wrapping up the semi-finals and preparing for the finals, judges are expecting the talent to only improve as these chefs have shown amazing capabilities. As a regular judge in this event, I have seen some mediocre dishes presented and I have seen some that should be in a five star restaurant in New York City or San Francisco! Each week I wonder how they could possibly get any better and each week I am amazed and humbled by their creations. The semi-final round last week included four chefs. Chef Santucci of Capri Restaurant battled Chef Smith of 3rd Corner Wine Shop & Bistro while Chef Souza of Circa 59 was paired with Chef Delmond of Westin Mission Hills Resort. In the first round, Capri Restaurant presented a lamb “lollipop” on a bed of cous cous, followed by a surf and turf combination of filet mignon and lobster tail. These dishes were executed

perfectly, full of flavor and impressive technique. 3rd Corner prepared a fresh interpretation of fish and chips. A tower of lightly battered and fried fish, paired with fresh cut and seasoned potatoes was served with smashed English peas. The two chefs were certain to implement the Crater Lake brand into each culinary creation but there would only be one winner moving on to the finals. After a lengthy deliberation, Chef Anthony Santucci would win this round. In the following competition, Chef Souza of Circa 59 in the Riviera Hotel would prepare a beautiful dish of scallops three ways. First, a scallop brulee with Crater Lake Gin, brown butter and caviar, beside a bacon-wrapped scallop with chanterelle mushrooms and topped with an espresso hazelnut glaze, and finally, a fried scallop taco with a cucumber slaw and avocado yogurt. Wow, this dish was as beautiful as it was delicious!

Chef Delmond would present a veal filet with sea urchin butter, gnocchi and Tuscan kale all served on a marina di chiogga squash puree. This dish was artistic and colorful but would it be enough to pass to the finals? As it turns out, it was a close call and Circa 59’s chef, Souza would win this round. These chefs have brought their best and the competition is getting harder and harder to judge. The final round remains, where five chefs will compete for victory and bragging rights. Wednesday, October 24th, will be the final competition so come support your favorite chef at Fixtures Living in Rancho Mirage across from The River. With great food available and tasting provided by Crater Lake Vodka, there is no

It was supposed to be an honor. is a fraction of that associated with a traditional restaurant. The biggest problem with the Pop-Up Dinner movement is that many operate illegally without insurance or permits from the Health Department. These permits are needed to make sure that the foods being consumed are handled with the sanitary practices necessary to prevent food borne illnesses and that the kitchen and facilities comply with local building and health codes. Fully licensed, permitted and insured, ShareKitchen is the Valley’s Pop-Up Hot Spot. Do you have an idea for a shortrun dining concept? Need a chef to actualize your idea or event? Whatever your culinary ambitions, go to www. wait to take on the challenge of the Ryder Cup, surrounded by pals Freddie Couples, Jay Haas, Michael Jordan stopped by to help out as Assistant Captains and the team was good! …..And then they played the thing. We all know what happened. The flipside of the “Miracle at Brookline” has come to be known as the “Mistake at Medinah” has left Love III shaken, haunted. He took a sabbatical, shut-off his phone and apparently, started hitting golf balls. He remembered that he is still a player on the PGA Tour who competes well although he’s in that area between 45-50 where players often fade against the competition of the young guns, waiting for the regenerative opportunities offered by the advent of turning 50 and joining their brethren on the Champions Tour which has seemingly

op-Up restaurants are all the rage. In Finland, a Pop-Up or temporary restaurant recently opened in a mining shaft. In London, one was erected overlooking the Thames River. The Cube, a Pop-Up restaurant which started in Milan, is a 1,200 sf. glass and aluminum Pop-Up dining structure that operates for a short period at various landmarks around Europe and the United States. Less elaborate Pop-Up Dinners occur regularly in most large cities across the United States. Often they are held in hotels, private homes, art galleries and vacant restaurant spaces. The reasons for the Pop-Up Dinner movement are clear. Many chefs want to try a concept for a short run and not be obligated to running that concept at a specific location for years on end. Part of the excitement to the chef and foodie alike is that the concept is for a limited time only. Some start Pop-Up Dinners out of necessity as the cost of operation

provided a Ponce de Leon quality to the careers of many-a-friend of Davis Love’s…… the problem is that Davis Love isn’t so ready to go quietly into that goodnight – yet. Love made it very clear that he intends on playing his way onto next Fall’s President’s Cup Team rather than accept Freddie’s offer to be an Assistant Captain. His resurgence began this week as he took the lead into this weekend at the McGladrey Classic, which had an unusually strong field for a Fall event with world class names and former major winners like Furyk, Cink, Leonard, Ben Crane, Vijay Singh, Zach Johnson and Clubhouse favorite, David Toms. In a Sunday shootout, it was not to be for DLIII, although he cashed a nice check. “Two-Gloves Tommy” Gainey edges David Toms, with Jim Furyk a shot back. Brendon

ARIES (March 21-April 19): In the coming days, many of your important tasks will be best accomplished through caginess and craftiness. Are you willing to work behind the scenes and beneath the surface? I suspect you will have a knack for navigating your way skillfully and luckily through mazes and their metaphorical equivalents. The mists may very well part at your command, revealing clues that no one else but you can get access to. You might also have a talent for helping people to understand elusive or difficult truths. Halloween costume suggestions: spy, stage magician, ghost whisperer, exorcist. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The coming week could have resemblances to the holiday known as Opposite Day. Things people say may have meanings that are different or even contrary to what they supposedly mean. Qualities you usually regard as liabilities might temporarily serve as assets, and strengths could seem problematical or cause confusion. You should also be wary of the possibility that the advice you get from people you trust may be misleading. For best results, make liberal use of reverse psychology, freaky logic, and mirror magic. Halloween costume suggestion: the opposite of who you really are. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): I don’t have a big problem with your tendency to contradict yourself. I’m rarely among the consistency freaks who would prefer you to stick with just one of your many selves instead of hopscotching among all nine. In fact, I find your multi-level multiplicity interesting and often alluring. I take it as a sign that you are in alignment with the fundamentally paradoxical nature of life. Having said all that, however, I want to alert you to an opportunity that the universe is currently offering you, which is to feel unified, steady, and stable. Does that sound even vaguely enticing? Why not try it out for a few weeks? Halloween costume suggestion: an assemblage or collage of several of your different personas. CANCER (June 21-July 22): An avocado tree may produce so much fruit that the sheer weight of its exuberant creation causes it to collapse. Don’t be like that in the coming weeks, Cancerian. Without curbing your luxuriant mood, simply monitor your outpouring of fertility so that it generates just the right amount of beautiful blooms. Be vibrant and bountiful and fluidic, but not unconstrained or overwrought or recklessly lavish. Halloween costume suggestion: a bouquet, an apple tree, a rich artist, or an exotic dancer with a bowl of fruit on your head. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): I hope your father didn’t beat you or scream at you or molest you. If he did, I am so sorry for your suffering. I also hope that your father didn’t ignore you or withhold his best energy from you. I hope he didn’t disappear for weeks at a time and act oblivious to your beauty. If he did those things, I mourn for your loss. Now it’s quite possible that you were spared such mistreatment, Leo. Maybe your dad gave you conscientious care and loved you for who you really are. But whatever the case might be, this is the right time to acknowledge it. If you’re one of the lucky ones, celebrate to the max. If you’re one of the wounded ones, begin or renew your quest for serious and intensive healing. Halloween costume suggestion: your father. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Do you know how to tell the difference between superstitious hunches and dependable intuitions? Are you good at distinguishing between mediocre gossip that’s only ten percent accurate and reliable rumors that provide you with the real inside dope? I suspect that you will soon get abundant opportunities to test your skill in these tasks. To increase the likelihood of your success, ask yourself the following question on a regular basis: Is what you think you’re seeing really there or is it mostly a projection of your expectations and theories? Halloween costume suggestions: a lie detector, an interrogator with syringes full of truth serum, a superhero with X-ray

vision, a lab scientist. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): I am officially protesting you, Libra. I am staging a walkout and mounting a demonstration and launching a boycott unless you agree to my demand. And yes, I have just one demand: that you take better care of the neglected, disempowered, and underprivileged parts of your life. Not a year from now; not when you have more leisure time; NOW! If and when you do this, I predict the arrival of a flood of personal inspiration. Halloween costume suggestion: a symbolic representation of a neglected, disempowered, or underprivileged part of your life. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “It’s so fine and yet so terrible to stand in front of a blank canvas,” said French painter Paul Cezanne. Many writers make similar comments about the excruciating joy they feel when first sitting down in front of an empty page. For artists in any genre, in fact, getting started may seem painfully impossible. And yet there can also be a delicious anticipation as the ripe chaos begins to coalesce into coherent images or words or music. Even if you’re not an artist, Scorpio, you’re facing a comparable challenge in your own chosen field. Halloween costume suggestion: a painter with a blank canvas. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): As you contemplate what you want to be for Halloween, don’t consider any of the following options: a thoroughbred racehorse wearing a blindfold; a mythic centaur clanking around in iron boots; a seahorse trying to dance on dry land. For that matter, Sagittarius, I hope you won’t come close to imitating any of those hapless creatures even in your non-Halloween life. It’s true that the coming days will be an excellent time to explore, analyze, and deal with your limitations. But that doesn’t mean you should be overwhelmed and overcome by them. Halloween costume suggestions: Houdini, an escaped prisoner, a snake molting its skin. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “Does anyone know where I can find dinosaur costumes for cats?” asked a Halloween shopper on Reddit.com. In the comments section, someone else said that he needed a broccoli costume for his Chihuahua. I bring this up, Capricorn, because if anyone could uncover the answers to these questions, it would be you. You’ve got a magic touch when it comes to hunting down solutions to unprecedented problems. Halloween costume suggestion: a cat wearing a dinosaur costume. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The Live Monarch Foundation made a video on how to fix a butterfly’s broken wing (tinyurl.com/FixWing). It ain’t easy. You need ten items, including tweezers, talcum powder, toothpicks, and glue. You’ve got to be patient and summon high levels of concentration. But it definitely can be done. The same is true about the delicate healing project you’ve thought about attempting on your own wound, Aquarius. It will require you to be ingenious, precise, and tender, but I suspect you’re primed to rise to the challenge. Halloween costume suggestion: herbalist, acupuncturist, doctor, shaman, or other healer. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): It’s not a good time to wear Super-Control Higher-Power Spanx, or any other girdle, corset, or restrictive garment. In fact, I advise you not to be a willing participant in any situation that pinches, hampers, or confines you. You need to feel exceptionally expansive. In order to thrive, you’ve got to give yourself permission to spill over, think big, and wander freely. As for those people who might prefer you to keep your unruly urges in check and your natural inclinations concealed: Tell them your astrologer authorized you to seize a massive dose of slack. Halloween costume suggestions: a wild man or wild woman; a mythical bird like the Garuda or Thunderbird; the god or goddess of abundance. BB Cream S

uddenly drugstore shelves and department store beauty counters are advertising that the latest and greatest BB Cream will be your beauty savior. But where did it come from and what is in it? BB Cream was developed in Asia and gained popularity almost overnight. The craze quickly spread across Europe and has arrived in the US with a bang. It is essentially the new superhero of skincare, if it lives up to the hype. First off, BB stands for Beauty Balm or Blemish Balms. This new balm is an entirely new category of skin care and beauty products because it has nearly every type of skin corrector and protector rolled into one. BB’s contain wrinkle reducers, moisturizer, suncreen and foundation. It even contains antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and age spot reducing capabilities. Depending on the amount of coverage you prefer, it may be used as a primer or foundation. This product is mainly marketed as a tinted moisturizer, but it’s so much more. Add in the benefits of small doses of peptides, niacinimide, vitamins C and E, sunscreen, and you have a lovely product that improves the health of your skin while giving a nice blend of coverage. How to pick the right BB cream is a tough choice. First, determine if it’s even an appropriate product for you. For older women with signs of aging, don’t expect it to work miracles. It’s going to be more of a small slight improvement beginning at about 8 weeks. The improvements reported in various reviews state a slow and gradual, but noticeable improvement in evenness of skin tone and a more

radiant glow in general. Expect to need and additional boost of antioxidants for more damaged skin, or an additional layer of sunscreen for those who have sun exposure year-round. Dry skin may need an additional layer of moisturizer applied before the BB product. As far as damaged skin, you’ll probably need a stronger serum or retinoids to get the improvement you’re looking for. Despite arguments over the original Asisan formulas’ superiority over the US version, the US products are showing promise and reviews on the less expensive drugstore brands are looking positive. So much so, I’m getting the L’Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier and I’m excited to test it. This product is best suited for those who need minimal correction but could certainly benefit from the highly desirable list of ingredients. Nearly every skin care and beauty line is carrying it. Estée Lauder, Dior, Smashbox, as well as more affordable lines such as Garnier, Smashbox, Loreal and Maybeline all have a new line of BB Cream products offered in various skin tones. Using a BB product certainly beats using nothing at all and the all-in-one simplicity coupled with affordable pricing cannot be beat.
