CV Weekly Celebrates 1 Year Anniversary

and Hosts CV Weekly Awards Show A

s Owner & Publisher of CV Weekly I am proud to announce that last week we printed our 52nd issue marking our 1 Year Anniversary. This week we begin with volume 2 of the paper. I would like to thank all of our loyal readers who have supported us as well as new readers who are just discovering us. The response that CV Weekly has received over the last year has been overwhelmingly good. When I started this paper, I wanted it to have something in it for everyone to read and enjoy. That has only been possible with the amazing team of columnists and feature writers that I have been fortunate to have with me from the beginning. We have also added a few new columns/features in the last few months such as; Education, Comedy, Road Trippin’ and the return of Trivia. I am excited to announce that we will be introducing a Real Estate column next week written by Bruce Cathcart and a Fashion column which will be written by a revolving group of writers. We will also be expanding our Health, Fitness & Beauty column to include more of the medical field. We will also be covering more in depth newsworthy stories. Our goal at CV Weekly is to continue to grow and be YOUR paper. Please send any comments or suggestions to editor@coachellavalleyweekly.com. So what is an anniversary without a party? CV Weekly plans to do it up right and everyone is invited to help us celebrate. On Saturday, April 6 we will host two events in one at Emerald RV Resort at 76-000 Frank Sinatra Dr. in Palm Desert. Over the last 4 weeks valley residents have been able to vote for their favorites in 67 categories on our website. Voting ended last Friday and the votes have been tallied. The winners will be announced at CV Weekly’s Best of the CV 2013 Awards show on Saturday, April 6. The Awards show part of the event will begin at 2:30pm with an appetizer lunch provided by Sullivan’s Steakhouse and the Awards beginning promptly at 3:00pm. In between awards being announced

his past Thursday the finals commenced at Stadium House for the Lucky Break Talent Competition hosted by 100.5’s Bradley Ryan and sponsored by Crater Lake Vodka & Gin. There were 9 finalists that competed including: musicians Zach & Jack, Felix & Notepad, Gesus, Cory Christensen, Derek Jordan Gregg, Tyler Pendleton, Rob Lawrence and comedian Hayley D. The competition was fierce with an abundance of talent making it difficult for the judges to choose. However, the female singer- songwriter & guitarist with the uniquely identifiable voice, Mack Graham, took the Grand Prize of 100.00 cash from Crater Lake and a Las Vegas trip from Mix 100.5.

hat do you get when you put the son of a Greek goose herder, a Chinese acrobat and the grandson of a Russian migrant farmworker in one room with a drummer? Pictures from Eden, that’s what! At least that’s how these self-abasing, immensely talented musicians paint themselves on their website Picturesfromeden.com. I, on the other hand, would describe this tribe of players as one of our desert’s top, original alternative rock bands. These guys deliver decidedly positive, uplifting messages of compassion and hope with clear, pure vocals, powerfully steady rhythm and epic explosions of guitar that have a tendency to make one stop breathing. My opinion was shared by many who witnessed their last show at the Date Shed when they opened for The International Swingers. Pictures from Eden’s next adventure will not only further expose their talents and music, but will be doing so in order to benefit a fantastic charity , BIG HORN Behind A Miracle. This charity, also known as BAM, was founded by a collection of amazing people at Big

Horn Country Club, and is dedicated to providing critical funding needed to help in the diagnosis, treatment, research, services and education for those affected by breast cancer. BAM’s recent donation of 2.3 million was instrumental in the purchase of state-of-the-art breast cancer technology at Eisenhower Medical Center. Inspired to save the lives of Coachella Valley cancer patients, BIGHORN BAM raised $1 million during their recent five month long fundraising campaign, culminating in 2.56 million raised in just five years. “BIGHORN Behind a Miracle has proven to be exactly that... a true miracle!” shares chairwoman Selby Dunham. “We are so proud to benefit Eisenhower’s first class facility as well as the genuine efforts that The Pendleton Foundation exhibits to cancer patients who are truly in need. The generosity of the Bighorn members, their guests and friends is truly extraordinary. Without the enthusiasm and energy of so many volunteers and committee members, none of this would have been possible.” These efforts will continue at this free concert at The Hood Bar and Pizza located at 74360 Hwy 111, Palm Desert. The music, food and merriment will be commencing at 7 pm, Thursday, April 4th. There just may not be a more celebratory, fun way to support a charity that aims to cure a very serious disease. For more information regarding the charity, to join or volunteer call (760) 610-8218 or go to www.bighornbam.com.

The Dinah: The biggest girl’s weekend takes over Palm Springs C

lub Skirts’ founder Mariah Hanson certainly knows how to throw a party. Since the early 1990s, she’s invited thousands of her closest lesbian friends to come to Palm Springs to party in the sun during what was then the Dinah Shore Kraft Nabisco Golf Tournament (now it’s simply the Kraft Nabisco). And if the party-goers had no interest in golf? So what, there were pool parties, nighttime concerts and just plain parties to keep the girls busy. While getting the girls together is the general purpose, “I believe that we should ‘party with a purpose’,” she said recently from her home in Mountain Center. “We do a couple of events that raise money for a good cause.” This year’s inaugural Celebrity Poker Tournament, which takes place during the Monte Carlo Party on Saturday night, will benefit the Human Rights Campaign and its work in gaining gender and marriage equality. “People always want to play with celebrities and this is there chance,” she said. While Saturday and Sunday’s all-day pool parties are always a highlight of the weekend, there are some extra added attractions to those events. Saturday marks the return of Celebrity Dodge Ball, featuring the Celesbians (performers such as Fortune Feimster, Doria Biddle, Romaine Patterson and Kelsey Grace Chavarria) playing against the fit, miniskirted Dinah Weekend GoGo Dancers. “Over the past couple of years dodge ball has become really popular again,” she said. “And who doesn’t want to see your favorite lesbian get whacked by a ball.” Feimster, who is a regular panelist on

Comedian Fortune Feimster Mariah Hanson, Founder

Chelsea Lately and appears on After Lately, will headline Thursday’s opening Comedy, which also includes comics Suzanne Westenhoefer, Jackie Loeb and Jacqueline Monahan. “The Comedy Night is one of the most popular events of the weekend,” she said. This year also marks the debut of The Dinah Film Festival. “It’s time,” Hanson said. “We wanted to include a showcase for LGBT film and give the filmmakers a platform for their films about women.” The films at the Saturday screening are “Second Shot,” with Jill Bennett as an exsoccer player who inherits her hometown’s gay bar and how it gives her a second chance to face her first love, along with “Out in the Desert,” a documentary that takes an indepth look at what really happens when thousands of women meet in the desert for “sex, love and friendship” for Dinah Weekend. Where the girls are… If you’re a girl and looking for a weekend filled with fun in the sun pool parties, Celesbian dodge ball and cool concerts, the 2013 edition of The Dinah Weekend, presented by Club Skirts, is most definitely the place to be. Over the past 23 years, The Dinah has become the premiere lesbian party and draws party-goers from around the world to take advantage of the top-drawer entertainment and non-stop parties. This year there’s a jump-start to the parties and concerts with a Wednesday preevent party for those who get to the desert with enough time to rest up and settle in before all the girls get to Palm Springs. Event producer Mariah Hanson believes in giving back and that a “party with a purpose” makes the fun more meaningful. This year The Dinah is pairing up for a Celebrity Poker night, pitting Celesbians against each other to raise money for the Human Rights Campaign. Here’s a look at what’s coming up at The Dinah 2013. Radio Free Joshua Tree

“The Music of the Spheres from the Edge of the Mojave Desert” -Teddy Quinn “We are currently OBSESSED with Radio Free Joshua Tree. We love being able to catch the vibes of Joshua Tree and the High Desert when we don’t have the means to physically travel there. This free online radio station sets the stage sonically... so we can sit back and soak it up.” -Coachella Valley Art Scene oshua Tree is described by its chamber of commerce as “a community of artists, musicians, working families, businesspeople, telecommuters and retirees”. The fact that artists and musicians top the list is no accident. Joshua Tree has truly become “a symbol of the high desert, a cultural icon and a state of mind.” Many visit the unique beauty that belongs to and is preserved by the Joshua Tree National Park, but many others are drawn to the place for the artistic inspiration that seems to come up from the very earth the community stands on. Ted Quinn, an icon of the high desert himself, knows all about this having been neck deep in this creative nucleus that has produced some of the most profoundly unique music in the industry. His connection to these diverse musical forces indicative of the area goes back to the early days of Rancho de la Luna Recording Studio. The infamous studio, founded in 1993 by Fred Drake and David Catching, played host to artists such as Daniel Lanois, Queens of the Stone Age, Victoria Williams, Fu Manchu and Mark Lanegan, giving birth to what is often referred to as “the desert sound”. It was Ted Quinn who stood by Fred Drake during the last days of his all too brief life in June of 2000. A moving account of that time was lovingly written by Quinn and can be found on Ranchodelaluna.com. Not only does this reflect Quinn’s deep connection to the musical history of the area, but also

J

his compassionate spirit toward people and his community. Having hosted many commercial radio shows, he made the leap to producing his own podcast to embrace and share all that is beautiful about the arts in Joshua Tree. According to the website, that immediately begins streaming music when you visit, Radio Free Joshua Tree has its roots in the 45 rpm records that belonged to the elder siblings of Teddy Quinn. Quinn, a free spirit who liked to pretend to be a DJ when he was young, grew up in a musical household in the 1960’s Laurel Canyon area. A child actor, teen poet and rock and roll singer/songwriter, Quinn eventually found himself hosting an Open Mic at the seminal Beatnik Cafe in Joshua Tree. From there, Quinn began a webcast, “Peacenik at the Beatnik,” in July, 2004 with his first guests, Elia Arce, Hooman Fazly and Marcus Kuilland-Nazario. The show ran for close to two years, with guests including Dave Catching, Chris Goss and the late Buzz Gamble. When the computer crashed, those shows were lost, but not Ted’s excitement of presenting his superabundant collection of music to a potentially world-wide audience. “I posted a ghost playlist on Facebook, asking if there would be any interest in a streaming online radio show in Joshua Tree,” Quinn shared. Among the hundreds of immediate positive responses, tech consultant and musician, Michael Roark, jumped on board and helped ready Radio Free Joshua Tree for launch. The new station was officially announced on 12/12/12. The premiere episode was a two hour local musicians’ holiday special, hosted by Ted Quinn on December 23. Roark’s daughter, Kadey Gee, a musician in her own right, soon after debuted her “Trust Everyone Under Thirty” show. The show features a

quality mix from many of the young local artists, based on her ‘no genre left behind’ policy. More new programs were added in February 2013: Kitten Time with Leslie Mariah Andrews; Rancho de la Luna’s Vinyl Frontier; Desert Drums with Brent Lewis; the Overnight Trip ambient music program; the rootsicana Parsons’ Country and many more. Three short months following their

initial launch, Radio Free Joshua Tree is pouring out music and stories 24/7.

“The outpouring of support for the project has been immense and world-wide. Artists, activists, poets, PR professionals, recording engineers, arts organizations and local businesses have all stepped up to fill every

conceivable gap with their expertise. Radio Free Joshua Tree seeks to bring Joshua Tree to the world - and the world to Joshua Tree, while archiving a great artistic scene, through its many diverse sounds.” Listen to Radio Free Joshua Tree at www.RadioFreeJoshuaTree.com or www. boycott radio oycott Radio sound like a punk band, but don’t let the label fool you. These twenty-somethings are making harmonic ripples in the Coachella Valley. With Chris Long on guitar and vocals, Dan Wheat on bass and vocals and Sonny McEachran on drums, Boycott Radio are looking to continue their infiltration of the desert music scene by performing memorable sets like the one at The Date Shed that I was lucky enough to witness one month ago. “We were the first band of the night. It’s a blast because you get to set the tone of the excitement. It’s definitely different from what we have done,” Long shared. They are performing next, along with Joe Kid & the Gash, at The Hood Bar & Pizza on Saturday 4/6/13 in support of

desert rock cohorts Blasting Echo and their new album release. Blasting Echo will also be performing. As McEachran describes it, “The name Boycott Radio came from working in jobs at a young age and being forced to listen to terrible radio, Top 40 and then the ads that followed. Just pulsating and pumping this music and terrible ads down your throat.” Boycott Radio is more of an alternative than exclusion. McEachran continues, “I like the idea of internet radio. It’s commercial free and above all it’s giving music to everybody. That’s what Boycott Radio is all about.” Long and McEachran began as a twopiece playing open mic night at The Hood Bar & Pizza in January 2012. Wheat, also a member of the melodic metal band Remnants of Man, joined Boycott Radio in August 2012 after Long’s father found Wheat on Craig’s List. Long had seen Remnants of Man perform before and now admits that it is surreal to be performing alongside him. Their very first show as a trio was at The Hood Bar & Pizza. They’ve performed at the Fireside Lounge, Bar and the Roadhouse in Palm Springs. Long describes how they have earned their musical stripes in the local

translates to people having a good time watching us.” Wheat reconsiders, “If anyone had to ask what genre we are, we’re fun.” The Boycott Radio members are not lost on the idea that we live in the smallest world ever. They can go as far as they are willing. “The unifying factors of music transcend. It doesn’t matter where it’s from, it can connect with people anywhere. In that regard, I hope somebody in South Africa hears us and says they like it,” Long theorizes. McEachran shares his take on his current state, “I take what I like and mimic it. Everything does come from something else. If nobody ever copied anyone else we’d all be running around naked.” Wheat is more pragmatic about the band’s destiny, “Really, the future plans haven’t even actually been discussed. We’re having a lot of fun doing what we’re doing right now. It’d be really cool to see where it goes.” These young bucks are serious about having fun. They are energetic, they taunt each other and they are mocking. These aren’t necessarily negative traits. I like them. This new genre of ‘fun’ they’ve established will return you to your youth as it has for me. I guarantee you will enjoy their performance at The Hood Bar & Pizza on Saturday 4/6/13. scene, “We’re usually the band that goes on at midnight after the prime spot. We’re playing as everyone is leaving. It’s what you make of it. The stage performance is as much of what you put out there. You’re gonna get that back from the audience.” McEachran was born and raised in southeastern Michigan until he moved to the desert when he was 17. Long was born in Whittier, California and now resides in Palm Desert. Wheat went to high school in Anza and subsequently relocated to the Coachella Valley. Boycott Radio will be recording in the next month in order to dispense two or three songs at shows. This calculated move will surely bode well with admirers of their live shows. Boycott Radio has been nominated in the best punk band category for the Best of the CV 2013 Awards Show & 1 Year Anniversary Party to be held Saturday April 6, 2013 from 2:30-10:00 p.m. at the Emerald Desert RV Resort in Palm Desert. In jest, Wheat accepts the nomination with some apprehension. “We’re not a punk band but vote for us! Our sound is very unique. Punk is my background. I hate being put in a category. We are anthemicpop-punk-esque rock!” Long elaborates on Wheat’s point, “We play rock and roll music that is appropriate in a bar type setting. It’s that intimate rock that’s aggressive. here seems to be a huge influx of truly talented musicians coming up in our arts-conducive Coachella Valley. This music should not only be supported by those of us who are blessed to be the recipients of such gifts, but it also needs to be captured in a way that can afford these artists the capacity to reach for their dreams. It needs to be recorded with the same artful passion, talent and skill with which it was created. Allow me to introduce you to Cameron Chaney, sole proprietor and sound engineer of Phantom Productions. Cameron, who was awarded Coachella Valley Music

Awards “Best Producer” in 2004, is back at it with his new studio in Palm Desert. For a fairly young guy in the industry, Cameron is laden with experience. He was the acting sound engineer and stage manager for “Music Under the Stars” at the Indio Polo Grounds, benefiting the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission. He has recorded and produced the artist Chingon from the Fifth Sun; collaborated and recorded a single for Jesse Hughes from Eagles of Death Metal and recorded over 100 local artists in every genre from rap, rock, classical, to hip hop. He has been called a “technical sound genius” by Jesse Hughes. Current recording artist and YouTube sensation, Tiny Jay says, “Cameron has a unique blend of sounds and is professional in every way. To me, he himself is an artist. My name for him is ‘Mix it up Cam’ ~ he has several one of kind sound effects and makes music come to life.” If the last name rings a bell, there’s a reason for that. Cameron is the greatgrandson of Lon Chaney, Senior, the American actor known as “The Man of 1000 Faces”. He was an actor during the age of silent films, regarded as one of the most versatile and powerful actors of early cinema. He was renowned for his characterizations of tortured, often grotesque and afflicted characters, and his groundbreaking artistry with makeup. Chaney is known for his starring roles in such silent horror films as The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera, thus part of the inspiration for the name and décor of his greatgrandson Cameron’s studio. Cameron says

Lon Chaney, Sr. influenced him in many ways. “He taught me how to attain true independence by exploring creativity and artistry as well as the art of collaboration. I think my ability to produce unique sounds that appeal to many different types of artists and people regardless of where they come from or what they have been through comes from him.” Cameron has put together a team of experienced engineers that includes Emmanuel Sanico who currently runs the recording program at the Indio Teen Center, and Fernando Shahpouri, an engineer that has collaborated with notable artists such as Moprene, Shakur and Slim the Mobster. Good friend Jimmy “Neutron” Newton assists with promotion and networking with the super positive, subatomic energy his nick-name reflects. Cameron himself was an intern at the highly respected Los Angeles Recording School and California Sounds. It is Cameron’s vision and heartfelt mission to help as many local artists as he can to fulfill their dreams in the music industry by providing them with an experienced and affordable recording studio. “My hope for this studio is that it will become a home to musicians and artists where they can communicate their own personal stories, struggles and truths and put it all down.” This affordable, artistcentered studio is equipped with a Roland Phantom G-6, Sapphire Pro 40, Pro Tools

10 and Logic. They have spent thousands of hours recording back up sounds and beats to compliment any type of music from dark to light. Cameron and teaching partner Ron Blankenship, a graduate of Los Angeles Recording School, with 6 years of experience, are also offering a Dub Step workshop: a production class with a full curriculum, teaching local producers to do what has become the latest trend in Los Angeles. This is just an introduction to Cameron Chaney and Phantom Studios. Coachella Valley Weekly, whose passion is to support the artists in our community, will continue to follow this very talented individual and keep you posted as to how Cameron Chaney’s dreams are making other dreams come true. Phantom Productions is located at 74841 Velie Way, in Palm Desert. You can reach them at (760) 404-8656.

Rocky LaPorte @ Fantasy Springs Resort Casino Improv Comedy Club Friday, March 29th at 9pm & Saturday, March 30th at 8pm & 10pm

R

ocky LaPorte, a former Chicago truck driver and dock worker, began his standup career in the “Windy City” back in 1988. After winning some local comedy competitions, Rocky went on to win the Johnnie Walker National Comedy Competition, beating out over 1,100 contestants in ten cities. This was followed by numerous television shows like Cheers, Pat Sajak, Comic Strip Live, a CBS pilot titled “The Rocky Laporte Show” and his very own, half hour special on Comedy Central. When Rocky finally got to do the Tonight Show, he said, “It only took 16 years of sweat and toil, but who keeps track of that kind of stuff?” Although an appearance on the Tonight Show is touted as a career high for most comedians, Rocky says one of his proudest moments came when he was voted as one of the funniest guys in his class at a recent G.E.D. reunion. This honor ran a close second to being voted “Best Male Club Comedian of the Year” at the Las Vegas Comedy Festival, an award presented by George Wallace and Andy Kindler. This honor was bestowed based on a poll of forty of the top comedy clubs around the country. With a busy schedule of corporate work and touring major cities, Rocky has become a favorite everywhere in the country. But near and dear to Rocky’s heart is the charity work that he does in abundance. LaPorte has performed two tours for the troops in Iraq. One such tour was shared with Drew Carey and Kathy Kinney (Mimi) of the Drew Carey Show, and can be seen on the Showtime special “Patriot Act: A Jeffrey Ross Home Movie.” I asked Rocky if everything is as safe as it looks on TV, surrounded by soldiers on a secured American base: “They definitely protect you and take extra measures to keep talent safe when you fly in for these events. But it’s very obvious that there’s a war going on. Exactly ten minutes

after Drew and I left our hotel in Bagdad to come home, our hotel was hit with a mortar round. Had anybody been running late, that wouldn’t have ended very well.” Rocky’s son, Rocky Daniel LaPorte, recently completed a tour of duty in Iraq as an Army combat engineer. Needless to say, Rocky has an infinitely deep appreciation for our men and women in the war zone. “You know, it’s funny; they tell us, ‘Thank you for coming and bringing us a little piece of home.’ I’m like, ‘Are you kidding? We get to go home! You have to stay here and do this job!’ There are so many young men and women there and your heart breaks for them.” Rocky’s charity work supports other great causes such as St Jude’s for Children, N.F.L. Charities, Homeless shelters, cancer research and police and fire department fundraisers as well and animal shelters. Rocky’s clean, blue-collar style of comedy is impossible not to love. Today Rocky is one of the most sought after comedians in the country. “I’m definitely excited to be back in Southern California. I used to live there, so I’m really looking forward to performing and seeing my family and friends again.” Rocky LaPorte will be performing with fellow comedians Ron Morey and Taylor Williamson. Tickets can be purchased at Fantasyspringsresort.com or by calling 800.827.2946. Guests must be 21 or older to attend Improv performances.

Goldenvoice, Golden Touch, Golden Rule O

utdoor concert venues Coachella Fest and Stagecoach have magnified and enhanced the CV brand. “Coachella” has put the valley on the map for a whole new generation. Wildly successful and globally recognized, these events are a product of concert promoters Goldenvoice. In 1999, Goldenvoice produced the first Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Doing it for the love of music, rather than a love for money, the show was a loss. Giving it another try in 2001, they quickly found their groove and have been producing the festival ever since. Now, tickets for the event sell out in hours and 160,000 people attend over two weekends. Stagecoach Festival was added in 2007 and includes classic country music, alterative country and bluegrass. Nearly

75,000 people attend. Both events are held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. Once again Goldenvoice is expanding their production prowess. But instead of great musical acts, it will host great medical acts. April 4 through 7 Goldenvoice is sponsoring a free medical, dental and vision clinic at the Indio/Riverside County fairgrounds. Healthcare professionals from all over California are available to provide quality care for anyone who wants it. The clinic will open at 5:30am each day and line-up for services begins at 3:00am. Patient entrance is at Gate 6 off Dr. Carreon Blvd, 82-503 Hwy 111 in Indio. Patients will be seen on a first-come, first-serve basis with no income test or eligibility requirement of any kind to receive treatment. RAM CA Expedition Coachella Valley (Remote Area Medical Foundation) is an allvolunteer charitable relief organization that hosts medically under-served areas. They do not charge for work and only seek the opportunity to provide care where it is most

needed. Two years ago, Goldenvoice President, Paul Tollett, approached the non-profit. “It’s wonderful that people care enough to help others,” said Pamela Congdon, RAM California President and Volunteer Coordinator. “Paul saw there was a need. The community has been so good to them he wanted to give back.” Goldenvoice will contribute an estimated $100,000, plus their expert coordination and production skills to ensure the event is a success. This free medical clinic is the largest and most comprehensive the valley has ever hosted. Healthcare includes 50 dental chairs, up to15 medical exam rooms and 20 eye exam stations. Mobile vision labs will be able to produce free prescription eyeglasses on site. When Tollett saw the vision lab, he wanted to ensure it would be included as part of the CV clinic. RAM CA anticipates serving 800 people a day. Lindsay Lyons, Publicist for Goldenvoice said it was not their policy to comment on the event. “We are not talking on the

record,” Lyons said. Turns out she was not talking off the record either, and deferred all inquiries to Congdon. Officially, RAM CA is holding the expedition at the invitation of the Coachella Valley Community Trust and is supported by the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, The Flying Doctors and Goldenvoice. Goldenvoice is currently awaiting approval from the City of Indio for permission to increase the number of music festivals. They are looking to produce up to five events every year. It is a gracious and generous gesture that Goldenvoice would apply their golden touch as well as the golden rule and bring RAM CA Expedition Coachella Valley to the community. Perhaps RAM CA will be added to the annual Goldenvoice roster.

Local Bands Take Center Stage at Tachevah Block Party

ow many times have I heard the valid complaint that our local musicians are not given the opportunity to play at the huge, Goldenvoice produced, music festivals that make their home here in the Coachella Valley every year? Well, at last, Goldenvoice has heard our cry and will be celebrating three of our local, original bands. They will do so at their Tachevah Block Party, Sunday, April 17th from 5-11pm at the Spa Resort and Casino. Each band will play before Goldenvoice executives and block party attendees for 30 minutes, giving them priceless and rare exposure and opportunity. The competition was tough as over 80 video submissions were reviewed and voted on by more than 95,000 fans. While there were many deserving bands, props should be given to Goldenvoice; these top three bands are truly “local” and none of which could have won based on social network numbers (Facebook “likes”) alone. These three bands are uniquely wonderful in their delivery of non-commercial, original music and are sure to fabulously represent our phenomenal desert music scene. The Pedestrians ~ Speaking with Brandon Henderson of The Pedestrians, a name familiar to our desert music scene as a player and promoter (nominated for CV Weekly’s Best Promoter 2013), he shared his experience with the contest. “We really felt like the underdogs. We didn’t have a video produced when Mondo, our bass player told

us about the contest. We are still building our EPK (electronic press kit). So we just filmed our next gig at the Firehouse at the last minute. There were so many good bands and we didn’t feel the video was a full representation of our music.” If you’ve had the opportunity to see The Pedestrians, the band that Tachevah describes as “a hornsupplemented band from Indio featuring a fusion of punk, ska, funk and hip-hop”, you know exactly why they are worthy victors. They are the hometown boys of funk infected punk who have been dedicated to perpetuating the creativity of desert music scene since 1993. “We were totally stoked to make top 20 not to mention the top three! This gives us huge motivation to get all our marketing together with proper studio recordings of our solid material,” says Brandon. The Pedestrians were also nominated in CV Weekly’s Best of 2013 for Best Band and Best Live Performance

Winners- THE PEDESTRIANS

Band. Follow the Pedestrians on FB at The Pedestrians Official. For booking, contact Ray Phillips (AKA DJ Ray) at 760-497-8900 The Tribesmen ~ Tachevah lists these guys as “an indie experimental band from Coachella that emphasizes instrumental music”. It was pleasantly surprising that a strictly instrumental band would make the cut, but these guys are a virtual sonic candy store delivering unique instrumentation and arrangements that make your ears and emotions dance as easily as any lyrically based band. They too had to rush into production of a video for their submission. It so happens that a mutual friend from another band that entered the contest filmed their video for them. Freddy Jimenez, the group’s drummer shared, “We love what we’re doing. This is our dream. We have new songs being mixed and hope to be ready to distribute them by the day of the show... we will be practicing real hard between now and then.” You can follow this Coachella based band on Facebook at www.facebook.com/tribesmencv. You Me & Us ~ This band is listed on Tachevah’s website as “a Bermuda Dunes indie duo that recently played South By Southwest”. While it is true they have been on the road with a rather full touring schedule, including performing at the recent South X Southwest in Austin, Texas, this band is actually a trio now. “We heard about the contest from Carlee’s brother initially, and a lot of people kept telling us

we should enter. We had never shot a video before, and were just about to leave on tour. So we decided to take Ignacio’s dad’s VHS camera from the 90’s with us and just shoot whatever footage we could. We set it to a new song that hasn’t been released yet, and we were just excited to give people a sneak preview of our new record.” When asked what they felt their chances were they responded, “We were definitely hopeful. We were really happy with the video and song we submitted. But at the same time we understood that a lot of bands from all over were submitting and that it could really be anyone’s game.” I asked what they were going to do to prepare for the big show. They answered, “We are so excited to play a hometown show, especially one of this caliber. We’re just practicing our set, hanging out with our dogs, and eating celebratory tacos.” You can follow You Me & Us at the following links: Official website- youmeandusband.com Bandcamp-grumpybear.bandcamp.com Soundcloud- soundcloud.com/youmeandus Twitter- twitter.com/youmeandusband Congratulations to all of our local entries. We cannot say enough how impressed and proud we are of every single one of you, and are dedicated to supporting you, “the music makers, the dreamers of dreams”, the ones who make this desert an even more beautiful place to live, one creative song at a time.

DAVID BOWIE T

he time-honored trope regarding David Bowie is he’s the Chameleon of Rock & Roll. But that’s insufficient. It’s more accurate to describe him as Rock & Roll Innovator. David Bowie never followed trends, he anticipated them. Glam, Proto-Punk, Art Rock, Blue-Eyed Soul, Bowie had a hand in popularizing all of these genres. David Jones was born in Brixton London, England in 1947. Like many post-war teens his original inspiration came from Elvis Presley and Little Richard. He learned the Saxophone at an early age and began his music career at age 13. He cycled through a series of bands: the King Bees, the Lower Third and Mannish Boys. (By 1966, Davy Jones was making a name for himself with the Monkees, so David Jones became David Bowie). Transforming from a Mod Dandy to an Anthony Newleyesque crooner, to an effete hippie with Pre-Raphaelite ringlets, Bowie released his eponymous debut in 1969. The album was an admirable first effort featuring the desolate single, “Space Oddity.” Originally written to cash in on the Apollo 13 moon landing, the song became something more. Delving into the emotional journey of an astronaut named Major Tom. In 1970, Bowie’s focus shifted yet again. Hooking up with producer Tony Visconti and guitarist Mick Ronson. The first two records the trio made together, The Man Who Sold The World, and Hunky Dory were a huge leap forward. The former, a hard driving Rock record (which displayed Bowie on the cover lounging on a chaise in a flowing maxidress). The latter was more mellow and introspective, featuring instant classics like the epochal “Changes” and the evocative “Life On Mars.” Both albums set the stage for Bowie’s masterwork. Stardust, was a culmination of all of Bowie’s influences. A loose concept album about an androgynous alien, it harnessed Bowie’s melodic strengths and showcased his flair for the dramatic. Pimped out in an orange proto-mullet and “I Dream Of Jeanie-MeetsClockwork Orange Droog” loungewear, Bowie introduced Glam & Glitter Rock to America. Bowie was on the fast track to stardom, touring America, proclaiming his bisexuality, producing like-minded artists like Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and Mott The Hoople. Bowie was burning the candle at both ends. As the 70s progressed, Bowie shed personas like a snake sheds it’s skin. The decadent Aladdin Sane, the dystopian Diamond Dogs and the elegant Thin White Duke. Bowie’s music styles shifted just as effortlessly. He segued from glam-tastic spaceman to smooth Philly Soul crooner. The hits kept coming, “Jean Genie,” “Rebel Rebel,” “Fame,” “Young Americans,” and “Golden Years” were all massive. But his rampant creativity came at a price, Bowie developed a crippling cocaine addiction. Burned out and emaciated, Bowie retreated to Berlin in 1977 with Iggy Pop and producer Brian Eno. He defied expectations again by recording his minimalist, ambient triptych: Low, Heroes, and Lodger. He also produced Iggy Pop’s The Idiot, and Lust For Life. Re-hab’ed and revitalized, 1980 found Bowie making his Broadway acting debut as the title character in “The Elephant Man.” He also released his 13th studio album, Scary Monsters. A brittle distillation of Punk & Glam, he revisited the Major Tom character

“The Next Day” (Columbia Records)

in a sequel of sorts, “Ashes To Ashes.” The album was a critical success, setting the stage for Bowie’s 1983 re-invention. Collaborating with Disco/Funk producer Nile Rodgers, Bowie crafted his most commercial effort to date. “Let’s Dance” was a trenchant reclamation of the New Wave and New Romanticism, genres Bowie pioneered. The album featured blistering guitar solos from a relatively unknown Blues purist, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Sartorially splendid in designer suits and sporting a shock lemon meringue hair, Bowie gave long-ranging nterviews to magazines like Rolling Stone and Musician, denouncing his 70s claims of bi-sexuality. It was Bowie, 80s style, scrubbed clean of any controversy. Unfortunately, the synergy couldn’t last. Bowie spent the rest of the 80s in a creative abyss. In an attempt to rouse himself from this artistic malaise, Bowie inserted himself into a band setting for the first time in 20 years. Sadly, Tin Machine was a noble failure. As the 90s and the Grunge era dawned, Bowie began the decade re-married, (to Supermodel, Iman). His musical explorations took him from soul/jazz/funk hybrids to the emerging styles of Drum & Bass and Jungle. For the first time in his career, Bowie was chasing trends rather than inventing them. Finally in 2002, Bowie reunited with Tony Visconti, recording two albums, eathen in 2002 and Reality in 2003. Both efforts found Bowie embracing his legacy. During the “Reality” tour Bowie suffered a heart attack and received an emergency Angioplasty. Following his health scare, Bowie retreated from the public eye. Although he never officially retired, it seemed as though Bowie was done with music. Happily David Bowie is back, releasing his first new album in 10 years, The Next Day. The album kicks into gear with the title track. It’s a kinetic fever dream that rails against organized religion. The Next Day serves up a smorgasbord of signature Bowie styles. Three songs satisfy our Goth/Industrial jones. “Dirty Boys” feels feral and primitive. Earl Slick’s savage, slashing guitars lock into a primal pas de deux with Steve Elson’s brutal baritone Sax fills. “If You Can See Me” is howling and frenetic. Bowie sketches out a harrowing scenario of apocalyptic end times, buttressed by distort guitars and a pummeling beat. “Love Is Lost,” weds a caffeinated, jittery rhythm with guttural guitars. The lyrics detail the devastation of heartbreak in stark terms: “It’s the darkest hour…Your fear is as old as the world, say goodbye to the thrills of life where love was good and love was

bad/ Wave goodbye to a life without pain.” Yikes! Bowie acts as social arbiter on a couple of tracks. “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” uses celestial imagery to limn the cult of celebrity. “Stars are out tonight, they watch us from behind their shades/ From behind their tinted window stretch, gleaming like blackened sunshine.” Rippling guitar licks wrap around twinkling synths and a yearning string section. The propulsive backbeat and Bowie’s urgent vocals drive the song forward until the instrumental break when the proceedings slow to a Modal minuet. “I’d Rather Be High” is a withering indictment of our lengthy Middle Eastern occupation. Bowie is contemptuous and unapologetic.. “I’d rather be high, I’d rather be flying/ I’d rather be dead, or out of my head than training these guns on those men in the sand.” A martial cadence urges the melody forward, accented by spiraling guitars. Allowing the listener to exhale, Bowie slows the action on two numbers, “Where Are We Now” and “Boss Of Me.” The former is a beautiful ballad, lush and elegant, pensive and introspective. The latter is a sideways tribute to his wife, Iman. A soupcon of swooping sax trills echo the Philly Soul sound Bowie explored in the 70s. “Who’d have ever thought, who’d have ever dreamed/That a small town girl like you would be the boss of me.” Other stand out tracks include the urgent “Valentine’s Day.” “You Will Set The World On Fire” blends slash & burn instrumentation with lyrics that celebrate the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 60s. “Dancing Out In Space” weds a kick drum back beat to slinky guitar fills. Here Bowie insists “It’s something like religion, dancing face to face.” Finally, Bowie gets his Doo-Wop croon on with the sweet elegy, “You Feel So Lonely You Could Die.” The album closes with the minimalist “Heat.” Bowie sums up the succinctly sums up the dichotomy of his career: “I am a seer and a liar.” Along with producer Tony Visconti, The Next Day reunites Bowie with veteran collaborators like guitarist Earl Slick and bass players Tony Levin and Gail Ann Dorsey. The only caveat here is reserved for the album packaging. The cover art affixes a kind of scaffolding over the art from Bowie’s Heroes album. An apathetic choice for such a creative artist. The lyric sheet employs miniscule print with no separation between songs, making it nearly impossible to read. These are minor quibbles. The important thing is that Bowie is back at the height of his powers. He is operating on all cylinders. The Next Day is a tour de force.

Pat Rizzo returns to the Purple Room

axophonist and vocalist Pat Rizzo along with pianist and vocalist Patrick Tuzzolino will perform every Sunday from 7 until 11 p.m. in the Purple Room at Club Trinidad, 1900 East Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. (760) 327-1161 ext. 230. Rizzo will be telling funny stories, never heard before, of his experiences with Mr. Sinatra, the entire Rat Pack; Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford, and what was going on in Palm Springs at that time. It will once again be “Celebrity Night” in Palm Springs. In 1972, Pat Rizzo auditioned for Frank Sinatra at the Trinidad Hotel in the Purple Room, Sinatra’s favorite hangout. “Jilly Rizzo sent a limo to Los Angeles to pick me up in Hollywood. Î was recording with Sly and the Family Stone at the time. They brought me to Palm Springs and gave me a room at the famous Howard Manor. They took me to the club and put me onstage to blow my horn accompanied by the great pianist Joe Massters. I had no idea at all that I would be playing four feet away from Frank Sinatra

and his complete entourage.” From that night on, Rizzo played all of Sinatra’s parties, including Beau and Ken Venturi’s wedding at Paul D’Amico’s Restaurant. At one New Year’s Eve party at Sinatra’s home, guests included Mayor Wagner of New York, Spiro Agnew, Gregory Peck, Lana Turner Morgana King, Johnny Carson, George Burns and Rizzo even got to dance with Ginger Rogers. Sinatra called his home to request Rizzo perform with him at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 1975. “When he called me, I wasn’t home. I was on my way to record at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. When I got there, they told me ‘Sinatra just called looking for you, stay by the phone.’ When the phone rang, it was the famous Don Costa, who was Sinatra’s musical director and conductor. He told me, ‘You gotta be there, you can’t say no.’ So I left and drove back to my home around the corner from Sinatra’s house.” Rizzo missed the plane at Palm Springs Airport and then had to drive to Ontario. “When the plane arrived at Las Vegas,

I had to carry my luggage and my horns. When I finally got to Caesars Palace, I made my way to the showroom door. As I was walking down toward the stage there were 51 musicians on the stage and Frank stopped the rehearsal and then turned around and said to me, ‘Oh! Where you been?’ Rizzo was a featured soloist. I was the youngest member in the orchestra I listened and observed everything he did, not to be just like him, but to be

myself and develop my own magic. No one had any idea that Sinatra called me to fly to Las Vegas to be included in the Jazz Octet along with the 52-piece orchestra.” The programs in red velvet had to be changed to include Pat Rizzo as the ninth member of the Frank Sinatra Jazz Octet. “I still have the program.” The music created by Rizzo and Tuzzolino encompasses all the music from the Great American Songbook and more.

uddy is an amazing dog with an amazing background. He was once part of a Los Angeles animal acting group along with his brother dog who carries the umbrella in the Traveler’s Insurance commercial. However, Buddy’s own acting career floundered, and he found himself at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus shelter. Fortune found Buddy when he was adopted by Steven Garey, a famous concert pianist who is the last living protégé’ of the late great Liberace. Buddy was Steven’s best “buddy” until tragedy struck and Steven became severely disabled during a random crime. I drove to Palm Springs to meet Steven and Buddy when Loving All Animals was contacted about a gentleman who could no longer care for his dog. The apartment building for disabled seniors was a dreary building, but Steven’s upstairs unit contained

a beautiful piano and memorabilia from his show business career. It was the day before Steven’s 54th birthday, a birthday he shared with Buddy who was turning 4. The West Highland Terrier blend was an appealing and friendly character. The owner sadly explained, “I say goodbye to Buddy every day. It’s like waiting for the other shoe to drop. The first shoe that dropped was reaching the decision to give him up. I want him to get adopted quickly, so that I can get over the grieving process.” This was unlike any other owner relinquishment that sometimes involve “frivolous” reasons such as one I heard,”the dog doesn’t match our new carpet”. I suggested options like arranging for a dog walker, but Steven was adamant that Buddy deserved more. “Buddy I love you. God bless you,” were Steven’s final words to his beloved pet as we made our final exit. He turned his back so as not to see us leave. Tears streamed down my face as Buddy and I made our way out into the warm evening. Buddy loves car trips and seemed happy at the prospect of another ride, seemingly unaware that his life was taking on a new chapter. At his foster home, Buddy was thrilled to have other dogs to play with. I slipped out the door quietly, letting him be in the moment with his fellow canines. Buddy’s journey to a new home was not an easy one. The small dog went through several foster homes, one of them returning him because of upcoming surgery and another when he snarled through the front door at her grandson. We discovered that Buddy had a curious habit of nipping at the heels of certain young men. He never bit anyone, but his behavior was cause for

A nice family from Encino saw Buddy’s cute face in an email and decided to “foster to adopt”. Buddy locked eyes with me as they left, and I could sense his uncertainty. Two weeks later, Buddy attempted to nip at a young male visitor. I recommended training, but once they made the decision to return him, Buddy started to urinate inside the home. I also learned the wife’s cancer had returned. They were sorry, but could

not deal with his issues. I retrieved Buddy at a Starbucks along the 10 freeway. He was happy to see me as I was now his one thread of continuity. There was a whimsical sadness in Buddy that lurked just beneath the surface. My theory is that Buddy instinctively knew his new owner had a serious illness, and reverted to his familiar role of protecting someone with a medical condition. I wondered if Buddy wouldn’t do best in a home with a single woman or a gay female couple. Buddy’s ankle nipping had the potential to put a damper on a single gal’s dating life! Buddy and I were scheduled for the Channel 2 television pet segment. Steven, Buddy’s previous owner, called and advised me to make this a happy story emphasizing his Hollywood roots. He suggested I tell of Buddy’s heroism when he summoned help after Steven had a bad fall. This would not be another sad tale about a homeless dog. One of the calls that came in was from Meredith Asher, widow of the renowned Hollywood director William Asher (Bewitched, I Love Lucy, etc). Meredith was thinking about getting a dog for companionship, and she was intrigued by Buddy’s show business background. Their first meeting went well, a milestone for a dog who usually reserves his affection for a second meeting. The theme song “Movin’ on Up” played through my head when I delivered him to Meredith’s beautiful home, and I admonished Buddy that he better not blow this situation. He happily checked out his new digs, and played with his beloved squeaky toy. Buddy’s face is a mirror to his soul, and I sensed he was okay. That day he went to visit some of Meredith’s friends who approved of the new pet. A voice mail from Meredith reported, “Buddy is absolutely perfect! He’s doing just fine.... I got him a little house which he sleeps in inside my bedroom because he didn’t like being in the kitchen. Just as long as he can see me, he’s very happy!” Buddy helps keep Meredith in shape as the two go for daily walks and runs. Meredith reports he has no destructive habits, and is a patient and loving companion. Buddy now lives like a little prince in another home surrounded by Hollywood memorabilia! The sad look in his eyes is gone now that he’s in a loving home he’ll never have to leave. Buddy’s story has a happy ending, just like an old Hollywood movie.

THE VINO VOICE Ooh la la.. ma Petite Sirah! P by Rick Riozza

etite Sirah, like Zinfandel, is one of the few wines that California has taken to itself and produced something special. Originally from France (you know its cousin, Syrah, already) this grape with a feminine name really produces a wine quite on the brawny side with a dense blackberry fruit character, mixed with black pepper notes, licorice, smoked meats and tar.

And there’s a real following among us Californians who just go crazy over this stuff. It’s what a red wine drinker desires when meeting up with a large steak & potato. It’s historically big and powerful but, a fine bottle of Petite Sirah can also show an elegance like we find in a Cabernet Sauvignon. It has those great mouth grabbing tannins and is somewhat high in acidity that all work to make it a wine with the ability to age. It’s a winner of a red wine and the trend is to produce the best it can be. For a number of years in California, Petite Sirah was primarily used as a blending grape, thanks to its deep color and heavy tannins. And it is still frequently blended into Zinfandel for added complexity, body, and to tone down the tendency of Zins toward “jammy” fruit. The famed Ridge Vineyard’s Zinfandel out of Santa Cruz will always have a nice dose of Petite. Those of us back in the day who enjoyed Gallo’s Hearty Burgundy, really were enjoying a good portion of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah—it was tasty and inexpensive. (I don’t recommend it now—it’s not the same blend). So many wine enthusiasts remember their first great bottle of a single-vineyard Petite Sirah because there is so much going on with the wine and the synergy of the food pairing. Of course enjoying a glass of the Petite on its own is a treat as well—the wine’s complexities and popping dark-fruit flavors make it a lovely tasting affair. Those inquisitive will want to compare

the Syrah wines to the Petite. Like their spellings—they’re different. California Syrahs and Australian Shiraz’s have a different flavor profile. The “tar” notes that all of the wines share, are different as well. The Petite’s “tar” is much more subtle. The “cousin” relationship of the two is best reflected in a French Northern Rhone Syrah. But Petite Sirah is really a California beauty. Feminine in stylishness, masculine in clout. It is definitely a sexy wine. Anyone thirsty yet? The last time I wrote about Tulip Hill Winery, I started out trying to locate the winery tasting room that I had heard was situated somewhere in Rancho Mirage. A winery tasting room out here in the desert!? Yeah—Eureka! I had found it—at The River shopping mall, off Bob Hope Dr. and Highway 111. I ducked in from the heat of the day to enjoy an entire line of wines— white, red, and dessert: a memorable winelove fest. I remember Tulip Hill having a great line-up of Petite Sirah, so last week my son Paolo and I met up with Jean, one of the lovely tasting room personnel, and we savored our way through some tasty Petite. Everyone is now on notice: Locally, you will not find a better array of Petite Sirah to taste and compare. We began with the 2006 Napa Valley. Produced from their Pope Valley vineyard off the northeast slope of Howell Mountain, this refreshingly “aged” wine carries a combination of blackberry, dark chocolate, espresso, and tobacco. This wine is currently on sale for only $19.99: A great deal! I don’t think you can find any 2006 Petite Sirah on any store shelf in town, let alone a bottle that exhibits complexities, well-integrated tannins, and a bouquet that resonates Petite! I personally wanted to purchase a lot more, but I was thinking of you readers—you should all be enjoying this before it sells out. Next, the 2007 Reserve Napa Valley. From the same Pope Vineyard a year later, as with most reserves, it portrays a complex but heftier fruit profile. At the same time, this bottle reflects Petite’s great underlying & juicy acidity which is perfectly balanced here. Stronger tar notes than the 2006 but with a more floral backdrop. This is a great dinner wine. Tulip Hill’s 2009 Petite Sirah is from Lake County, specifically from the Canino Ridge

Vineyard which is named after the 100 year old Canino olive trees that line the ridge overlooking the vineyards. I just love the air and the area of Lake County; its unique soil and microclimate allows the grape to be all it can be, producing lush and voluptuous wines featuring black fruit, licorice, and allspice along with the expected chewy tannins. It’s still a “baby” but I especially recommend this to those new wine lovers who have not yet enjoyed a yummy Petite. The crown of the tasting was the 2008 Budge Brown Petite Sirah. Winery tasting notes: “This fabulous black, purple wine is intense, rich and of great depth. Huge aromatics of lavender, anise and violets carry through to the palate with some notes of blueberry, blackberry with hints of vanilla. Aging in French and American oak barrels for 18 months has given this wine its structure. This is a rich, soft, gorgeous wine. Only 221 cases produced.” I wish to add that this wine has joined the ranks as one of my favorite great California Petite Sirahs. It’s definitely the bold & the beautiful.

Tulip Hill Winery is a family-owned winery devoted to making “wines that let the fruit do all the talking”. Since they control everything from vine to bottle... they are able to create handcrafted products at an amazing price point. Their wines are made in a boutique style in small lot production. The Tulip Hill Winery Tasting Room is located at The River at Rancho Mirage, 71800 Hwy 111, 760.568.5678. They’ve got a great website that will bring you up to speed with a photo gallery along with info on all the unique gifts, wine accessories, exclusive lines of specialty food and chocolates that complement the wine tasting experience. Go to www. tuliphillwinery.com and click on to the Tasting Room And I see that we will all be in good company as Tulip Hill will be pouring at CV Weekly’s 2013 Award Show & 1st Year Anniversary Bash on April 6th. AJ’s on the Green

W

hen entering the gates at Date Palm Country Club you may not be expecting what a treasure awaits you at AJ’s on the Green. What you will find when you enter this restaurant is a classy atmosphere with a cool vibe. Decorated in sage green, black & white it also boasts beautiful art hanging on the wall including a unique feature of flowers hanging in vases that are fastened to the wall. We barely had a moment to take it all in before the hostess seated us at a table with a perfect view of the beautiful small lake filled with ducks and swans and complete with a fountain. The lush greens and trees complete this lovely landscape. We started out with a bottle of Hess Cabernet and chose the calamari for our appetizer. We definitely made the right selection as the calamari sticks were lightly breaded, tender and meaty and some of the best in the valley. Next we decided to try a Caesar salad for me and the wedge for my date. I must take

a minute to rave about this Caesar salad as it is unlike any I have ever had. It is prepared with mint in the dressing and is so flavorful that I have been craving it ever since. This unique blend was truly delightful. The wedge also comes with high praise. It was time to select our main course and I was undecided but our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and suggested the pan seared salmon for me and the braised short ribs for my date. This was a large portion of salmon perfectly prepared and not everyone gets salmon right. It was accompanied by some of the most delicious baby Brussels sprouts and carrots I’ve ever tasted. First, they actually tasted like the vegetable they were. Second, they weren’t to overdone. Third, they came in the most amazing sauce a vegetable could bath in. So much that I tried to get the secret sauce recipe along with the secret ingredients in the Caesar dressing out of coowner and Chef Arthur Herrera, but all he said was…. ‘It’s a secret’. I don’t blame the man. With these flavors being so unique

and tasty I wouldn’t share them either. It just makes a customer want to come back over and over again. The short ribs are a similar story with my date raving up and down as they literally fell apart with his fork as he was making comments like; tender, juicy, full of flavor, melt in your mouth goodness. I tasted them for myself and I must concur. They are definitely a culinary treat and I can see why they have garnered Chef Arthur Herrera awards. At this point we were almost too full for desert but our waiter insisted we try the Peanut Butter cup pie and I was glad he did. Now this is one decadent dessert and possibly one of my favorite desserts ever. My date ordered the crème Brule which was served warm and boasted a thick cinnamon shell and is now ranking #1 in our crème Brule’s of the desert. Overall this was a superb dining experience from the attentive service to the excellent cuisine to the beautiful ambience

NOW PLAYING: GREEDY LYING BASTARDS In last weekend’s Q&A at Palm Desert’s Cinema’s Palme d’Or, writer director Craig Scott Rosebraugh was supremely articulate about the lying, greedy bastards that are behind the denials – he calls them “denialists” -- of what almost every legitimate environmental scientist recognizes as a global warming pattern that is essentially caused by humans that is and will continue to have a devastating impact on our home planet. Rosebraugh said the first cut of his film, which was produced by Daryl Hannah, came in at eight hours. The final cut is only 90 minutes, but sometimes seems longer. It especially rambles in bizarre, lengthy interviews of a Colorado family who lost their home in a wildfire. Some excellent heavy weather and natural disaster footage is interspersed with the talking heads. What’s GREAT about the documentary is the scathing portraits of those who profit the most by making absurd counter arguments, and funding deceptive organizations limit any controls of environmental concerns. They crave their profits even if their actions destroy life – human and otherwise – on the planet. The Koch brothers are singled out by name,

OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN Anton Fuqua directs this tense but derivative action thriller about the White House – and President -- captured by a brilliant (aren’t they always?) terrorist. Gerard Butler is in fine form as a formerly disgraced (aren’t they always?) Presidential guard who saves the day against great odds. Somehow, the set up in the opening scenes was not satisfactorily paid off, but action addicts may find this crude, brutal and patriotic thriller enough for a fix. The exceptional cast co-stars: Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Melisa Leo, Ashley Judd and Rick Yune. The White

TO THE ARCTIC Greg MacGillivray’s beautiful Imax tone poem of a documentary takes us the forbidding arctic and allows us to spend upclose time with a mother polar bear and her two cubs. Of course there’s the requisite stops and informative conversations with scientists, but the rare bear footage makes this one a special treat. I am not a big proponent of 3D for the big or home screen, but I must say, the extra dimension just added enough to make the pristine, highly detailed footage even more surreal and breathtaking. A big recommendation. Warner Bros/Imax. Blu-ray 3D.

be validated with another Best Director Oscar© seems to be the true theme of this bloated, talky, faux history that comes across as “medicine that’s hard to swallow but good for you.” Privately, Daniel Day-Lewis must be amazed at how seriously -- no, make that reverentially -- he has been worshipped by some critics. But he and I both know that he is essentially a poseur which any gifted high school drama student could easily surpass. I sorely miss the vampires. Disney. Blu-ray. RobinESimmons@aol.com

Desert Writers Expo

he Rancho Mirage Library in association with the Palm Springs Writer’s Guild recently held its second annual Desert Writer’s Expo. With 42 authors in attendance, the event hosted an array of colorful, interesting and provocative local writers and their work. Mostly self-published, the predominately mature group had a great deal to offer. The books are filled with wit and wisdom, humor and horror, adventure and attitude. These talented authors share knowledge and experience in carefully written memoirs, self-help, fiction and nonfiction. Here is just a small taste of the flavor of the expo. Late Bloomer Millionaires: A Financial Story and Investment Guide for Late Starters by Steve Schullo and Dan Robertson is a personal account and guide to financial planning and investing. Schullo and Robertson have been partners for 38 years. Both educators, when it came to their retirement funds, they realized they had a lot to learn. Neither is a licensed financial advisor,

nor are they looking to generate business. The two simply share their mistakes, successes and strategies from 1994 to the publishing of the book in 2011. They are open and honest and provide an easy to understand, holistic, long-term and lowcost investing approach for those who want to take control of their own finances. It includes graphs and tables, a glossary and references. My Mother Died Before I Could Kill Her, a novel by Seymour Englander is closely based on the author’s own life growing up in South Africa. The character, Josh Pendrey looks back at his life when he returns home to his ailing mother’s bedside. The first person narrative tells a loving account of his coming-of-age during apartheid. The title refers to the author’s mother’s “death contract” or living will and her right to die. She requested her son to simply put a pillow over her head to end her suffering. The title also refers to Englander’s favorite phrase as a boy when his mother denied his requests or interfered with his plans. He often said, “I could murder her.”

PARENTAL GUIDANCE Andy Fickman guides an awkward Billy Crystal and the always fun Bette Midler in this flat, alleged comedy that is excruciatingly unfunny. Old style grandparents meet their match when they offer to babysit grandkids. That’s the premise. No real audience exists for this misguided film other than the no doubt forced screening in the Crystal household from whence this notion of a “family film” was apparently conceived. Marisa Tomei somehow emerges from this morass unscathed. 2oth Century Fox. Blu-ray.

A Broad Abroad in Iran: An Expat’s Misadventures in the Land of Male Dominance and A Broad Abroad in Thailand: An Expat’s Misadventures in the Land of Smiles are Dodie Cross’s bold and humorous books of her experience living in foreign lands. A distinctly out-spoken feminine point of view makes her a real fish-out-of-water in these award-winning stories. Burt Upson was in the World Trade Center’s South Tower giving a lecture on September 11, 2001. On a Clear Day: 9/11 An Eyewitness Account tells of his horrendous and life affirming experience surviving that notorious event. Morris Diamond is 91. In his memoir, The Name Dropper or People I Schlepped With he shares his experiences and personal relationships as a successful record producer in a career that spans over seven decades. From Tommy Dorsey to Michael Jackson, Diamond drops over 100 names. Author, speaker and consultant Dr. Beverly Battaglia, a social psychologist, shares the challenges couples face when they retire in her book Couples Changing Lanes: Redefining Retirement. With practical advice and examples, Battaglia helps lay out a roadmap to enrich the

retirement experience. A children’s book, Griff, by Merian Snow, is about a pure-bred Brussels Griffon who moves to Palm Springs from Oklahoma and learns to make friends while simultaneously helping his owner to acclimate. A true story, Griff was abandoned by a puppy mill for being four times the normal size for the breed and was eventually rescued by Snow. With over 20 years working with chocolate, Tony Manne’s Anthony’s Chocolates On-the-Go makes cooking chocolate fun, easy and delicious. This oversized cookbook has beautiful pictures and step-by-step simple directions for creating treats from truffles to turtles. The Desert Writers Expo is great fun and amazingly entertaining because so many of the authors are accomplished people. They take their writing seriously and have taken time and energy to carefully construct and articulate a narrative that is important and meaningful to them. The purpose of their creative endeavor is to share their stories and experiences with others. The opportunity to talk with these remarkable authors and peruse their books was a delight. This expo consisted of a room filled with treasures -- both books and authors.

STUPIDIOTRY IN AMURIKA

hile I believe that we live in the greatest country in the world, it is hard to disagree with the general opinion that our political system is dysfunctional and broken. Another widely held observation is that America is getting dumberer. When you combine a dysfunctional political system with an increasingly dense populace, well, laws show what you get: My absolute favorite nonsensical law can be found in Chico, just north of the state capital where there is a $500 fine for detonating a nuclear device within city limits. Terrorists, take that! Our county capital, Riverside, bans the carrying of your lunch on city sidewalks between 11am-1pm. Locally, most of the laws are not too peculiar once you get past Palm Springs. When in Palm Springs remember that you may not walk your camel down in the street between 4-6pm daily. Luckily, no other city has such restrictions. Cathedral City bans you from bringing your dog to school. Indian Wells bans fortune tellers, does not allow

rock crushing and has declared it illegal for businesses to play musical instruments to attract customers. In the high desert of Apple Valley, ducks quacking after 10pm is illegal. Heading up north to Berkeley, you may not whistle to a canary before 7am. Pacific Grove is more concerned with butterflies and fines you $500 if you bother them. In Walnut, a town nestled in the carbon monoxide geographical box of the 605, 57, 10 and 60 freeways, no man may dress as a woman without a permit from the sheriff

unless it is for fun. The sheriff must also issue permits if children wish to wear masks for Halloween. Lastly, if you fly a kite, it may not be more than ten feet off of the ground. Go next door to El Monte and you will find that they outlawed horses sleeping in bathtubs unless the rider is atop it. While that problem has subsided with the invention of the automobile, lawmakers have not taken it off of the books...just in case. Just south of El Monte is Pico Rivera where they are more concerned with women riding horses in shorts if they weigh more than 200 pounds - that is a code violation punishable with a citation by the (fashion) police. Just north of El Monte is Baldwin where riding your bicycle into a swimming pool will get you a ticket. Heading east to one of the true garden spots of California - Blythe - you may not wear cowboy boots unless you own two cows. So you don’t think that it is just our state that has dumb people and questionably necessary laws, other states have their own forms of stupidiotry. Just this year, North

Carolina made it a felony to steal more than $1,000 of grease while banning local planning agencies from using the science of climate change and a predicted rise in sea levels in building codes. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates design all buildings considering this scientific likelihood and its damage to buildings on land that is at or near sea level. In Horneytown, North Carolina (an actual place), massage parlors are banned. In Asheville, it is illegal to sneeze in public. Moving over to Dublin, Georgia, it is illegal to drive through a playground (whew!). In Illinois, you may only drive cars with steering wheels. In Almosa, Colorado it is illegal to throw missiles at cars. Don’t you wonder what happened in Almosa that caused someone to think that this law was needed? So what is your take away from this week’s column? Get edumicated...and I created a new word: stupidiotry. Fight Stupidiotry! Don’t Get Dumberer! Get Edumincated! Read CV Weekly!

Education

An Educational Spring Break with Teachable Moments

pring break is a good tell of the summer to come. Our children long for the days of no school, no homework, and no early rise. Our kids like to take their brains out and put them away until school starts up again. As a result, much learned information is forgotten, skills are lost, and teachers are frustrated with review upon student return. What can we do to better our children’s vacation? We can take advantage of study work your child has brought home and any teachable moments. Our students have study material. Most of this material is through previous homework. Any moment can be turned into a learning moment. I have second, third, and fourth students that come to me with their busy after school schedules that they use to try and reason their way out of studying their multiplication tables. My fifth through eighth grade

students use the same technique to find a way out of studying. I simply ask the students, “Did you travel by car?” During car travel, kids can turn the radio stations off, put the electronic devises down, and study. Commercials are also a great time to take advantage. The average half-hour show plays approximately ten minutes of commercials. Ten minutes of studying is ideal for simple skills, such as multiplication tables. A parent has the burden of making sure their kids study. Torture is not needed and threats have a negative effect on study time. Instead, let’s study with our kids. I understand that you are tired, have too much to do, and may have no desire to relearn something you have not seen since you were in your child’s grade. Take the leap. If your child sees you are interested and want to learn, their disposition of the subject will dramatically increase. Another moment to keep our kids

sharp is teachable moments. A teachable moment is a moment of realization and discussion. Cooking is a great teachable moment when you have a student learning measuring or fractions. Going shopping gives students a chance to work with money and change. Next time you are at a store, try allowing your child to give the cashier the money, and see if they can figure the change. Simple stimulation to the thought process is enough to keep information from becoming lost. The goal during vacation time is to keep our kids thinking. Allow your child to figure situations out before dismissing them and moving on. Don’t allow your child to leave their brain at home. Any situation can be turned into a learning situation; most of the effort falls on us as parents to put in the extra effort to keep our kids learning. The extra effort is well worth it.

Things I Learned From Granny P

eople don’t plan to fail they fail to plan. When you read what I write about below, you will have a head start on your neighbors when the need arises. I am covering the following areas, on which I have gained insight, in the last 9 months while observing my mother: Medicare Criteria for Admission to Hospitals; Health Care Directives and Aid and Attendance. Like most of you I was not aware of certain issues until they came up with our family. Medicare Criteria for Admission to Hospitals: Recently my mother in law went to the ER at Eisenhower. The ER would not admit her because she did not fit all the criteria listed in the computer for Medicare admission. Instead she stayed in the hospital in a curtained off “observation” room for a few days and was sent home only to return to the ER in a few days with the same issues. As an attorney I had never heard of this procedure and it apparently is just being implemented by hospitals.

A few days later she returned to the ER and she was placed in an Observation room again. This time it looked like a regular hospital room. She remained in observation for a few days. After 3 days she was “admitted”. For Medicare to kick in, certain criteria must be met according to the new “Medicare guidelines” that are not yet well known. If you remain in the hospital for a minimum of 3 days you are then admitted and Medicare will pay for rehabilitation (skilled nursing) costs for Physical Therapy after you are released. If it is not 3 nights then the resulting PT is on your nickel. I now understand that if all the criteria are not met then if the hospital admits a patient the hospital will NOT get paid by Medicare. This is a new world and we need to know about this. Health Care Directives: I also learned on this hospital trip that we should give a copy of our health care directive to the hospital ahead of time. It will instruct the hospital what to do in case a patient can not make their own

decision. It is probably a good idea to give JFK, Desert Regional and Eisenhower these directives so that if we or a loved one ever needs to go to the hospital that the hospital will have instructions to follow in case of an emergency. Though I had prepared Health Care Directives for my entire family (including my 27 year old daughter) I never knew that we should provide our local hospitals with these directives before the need arises. Aid and Attendance: My wife Patti had a TV Show where she interviewed Financial Planners from all over the country. When sitting in on one of the shows I heard them talk about Aid and Attendance. This was a term that had never presented itself to me. I did not learn about it in law school or in the practice of law. Maybe it is because lawyers cannot charge for helping clients with Aid and Attendance. When I asked local lawyers none of them had ever heard of it. The Department of Veteran Affairs offers this little known benefit to any war era Veterans, who are at least 65 years old, along

with their surviving Spouses. It is called AID AND ATTENDANCE and is available to anyone who served in the military while the US was involved in a WAR… anywhere in the world. You merely have to have been in the service. You need not have participated in the war. Aid and Attendance is a tax-free benefit designed to provide financial assistance to help cover the cost of long term care in the home, in an assisted living facility or in a nursing home. If you are a Surviving Spouse you can get $1,094/month…TAX FREE. If you are a VET the amount is $1,703/mo and if you are a Married VET you can get $2,019/ month…and you do not have to pay it back. I have discussed the criteria in past issues of the Coachella Valley Weekly. If you have questions call me at Law Office Dale Gribow, 760 341 4411, and I will explain how setting up a TRUST for your home can keep your net worth down so you would qualify.

ASTER SAFETY TIPS Searching for a hidden Easter basket is an activity that children of all ages enjoy, however, there can be a few problems if parents are not careful says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. Candy & Toy Safety: • In order to prevent choking, avoid hard, round candy; thick or sticky candy; or candy with nuts. Caramel, sour balls and jaw breakers can be dangerous because children’s airways are higher and narrower than an adult’s, creating a choking hazard.

• Fake grass is not digestible, so keep it away from little children. • Be sure that Easter toys and dolls (such as bunnies, chicks etc) are free of choking hazards. Pieces that can be removed from a doll or toy pose a potential choking danger to small children. Egg Safety: • Eggs are a potentially hazardous food, in the same category as meat, poultry, fish, and milk. In other words, they are capable of supporting the rapid growth of disease-causing bacteria like Salmonella. Before boiling eggs for Easter decorating/painting, they must be kept refrigerated. • Use only clean, unbroken eggs – check when you purchase. Discard dirty or broken eggs. Cool your eggs in cold water or just in the air. Be careful of hot water/scald accidents Egg Hunting: · Do not hide eggs in cupboards or drawers with dangerous products. Do not hide eggs in, on or under glass.

Safety Tips

Easter Safety? You bet. “Let’s Hop to it!”

· Do not hide eggs in preexisting holes in the ground or trees. Do not hide eggs in any plant that have thorns or sharp stiff leaves, look potentially dangerous or poisonous. (Rule of thumb: If you don’t know the name of the plant, don’t put an egg in it!) · Do not hide eggs in any animal’s home, food bowl or play area. Do not hide eggs where pesticides or poisons have recently been sprayed. · After hunting - Eggs that show cracks or damage, throw them away. Driving: · Many of us will be traveling to family and friends homes. Buckle up, plan your route and drive safely as we share the road with others. Remember, “Patience is a virtue desired by many possessed by few.” If you keep these few simple tips in mind, you should be able to enjoy a fun, problem-free Easter celebration says Chief DiGiovanna. Have a great Easter! Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna

WHEN STARTING A NEW BUSINESS hen starting a new business, there are some basic things you must do before starting the actual business. Both the Small Business Administration and ShareKitchen believe that a written business plan should be your first priority. The business plan is your roadmap and includes things like a description of your business, an analysis of the market and how your business fits. The plan helps you identify what you are selling, how you will sell and market it and why you will be successful. It includes financial plans and budgets so that you know whether you have the financial resources to effectuate your plan. In the process of writing the business plan, you will realize that you may need help in a number of areas such as legal, financial and human resources. This is where ShareKitchen, the Coachella Valley Women’s Center and SCORE can be valuable resources. Have you picked a legal structure for your business? Will you be a B, C

or S corporation; a Limited Liability Corporation, Sole Proprietorship or Partnership? Each have tax ramifications as well as reporting and licensing requirements at the federal, state and local levels. Choose wisely and with expert advice. You will need a tax identification number from the IRS and the state tax agency. You will also need to get insurance for the business as well as for your employees. Even without healthcare, you still need worker’s comp, unemployment and disability. If it takes an extra year or two to achieve your business plan, where would the money come from to sustain both yourself and the business? What is your businesses name and where will it be located? Can you get the right web address? Are others using your name? Doing a thorough job in the planning and set-up phase will help you greatly when the inevitable bumps in the road occur.

ne of the most romantic car rides I have ever taken was through Joshua Tree National park. Yes I know gas for a long drive is a luxury, but if you plan well it will be well worth it. I packed a surprise picnic lunch from one of those fancy grocery stores, real gourmet stuff. I picked up my honey and hit the I-10 east. Driving out towards Mecca and driving in the east entrance of the park gives you a much better understanding of just how HUGE it really is. The vast expanse of colors and different terrains are truly stunning. One amazing thing you’ll see going this way is the Cholla garden which is almost neon green and pops out of nowhere as you’re cruising through the monument. Keep on the main road and watch for the Keys View turn off. Get up there and you’ll be able to see all the way to the Salton Sea. This is where you break out the picnic and relax. After your picnic lunch, go back to the main road and head towards the Joshua tree exit. There are still many sights to see. Jumbo rocks, skull mountain

26

and climbers! There are always crazy climbers. When you exit the Park, I highly recommend you stop at the Joshua Tree gift shop that looks like some kind of old west trading post. Hwy 62 is the way back to the I-10. You will never look up to those mountains the same way again after you’ve had a picnic at Keys View. Search for maps of Joshua Tree National park online and plan your romantic car ride. It’s great for kids too.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY Week of March 28

ARIES (March 21-April 19): I was too lazy to write your horoscope this week, so I went to a website that hawks bumper stickers and copied a few of their slogans to use as your “advice.” Here you go. 1. Never follow a rule off a cliff. 2. Have the courage to honor your peculiarities. 3. It’s never too late to have a rebellious adolescence. 4. Criticize by creating. 5. Never make anything simple and efficient when it can be elaborate and wonderful. 6. Complex problems have simple, easy-to-understand, morally clear, wrong answers. APRIL FOOL! I lied. I wasn’t lazy at all. I worked hard to ensure that all the suggestions I just provided are in strict accordance with the astrological gestalt. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): It’s a perfect time to watch the cult classic film Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Alien, Flesh Eating, Hellbound, Zombified Living Dead. It will provide you with just the right inspiration as you deal with your own problems. APRIL FOOL! I lied. Don’t you dare watch any horror movies. You’re in a phase when you can make dramatic progress in transforming long-standing dilemmas -- but only if you surround yourself with positive, uplifting influences. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The coming week will be an excellent time to wash dishes, clean bathrooms, scrub floors, vacuum carpets, wash windows, do laundry, and clean the refrigerator. The more drudge work you do, the better you’ll feel. APRIL FOOL! I lied. The truth is, you now have astrological license to minimize your participation in boring tasks like the ones I named. It’s high time for you to seek out the most interesting work and play possible. CANCER (June 21-July 22): You know what would be a really cool prank to pull off this April Fool’s Day? Arrange to have rubber tires airlifted into a dormant volcano, then set them on fire. Smoke will pour out the top. Everyone who lives nearby will think the volcano is getting ready to explode. Don’t forget to videotape the event for Youtube. Later, when you reveal the hoax, your video will go viral and you’ll become a celebrity. APRIL FOOL! I don’t really think you should try this prank. It’s old hat. Back in 1974, a guy named Porky Bickar did it to Alaska’s Mt. Edgecumbe. Here’s my real oracle for you: It is a good time to boost your visibility by doing something funny. Or to build your brand by being mischievous. Or to demonstrate your power by showing off your sense of humor. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In the animated TV show The Simpsons, ten-year-old Bart is constantly getting into trouble because of the monkey business he loves to perpetrate. His teachers punish him by compelling him to write corrective declarations on the classroom blackboard. It so happens that some of those apologetic statements should be coming out of your mouth in the coming week, Leo. They include the following: “I will not strut around like I own the place. I will not claim that I am deliciously saucy. I will not instigate revolution. I will not trade pants with others. I will not carve gods. I will not Xerox my butt. I will not scream for ice cream.” APRIL FOOL! I lied. The truth is, you SHOULD consider doing things like that. And don’t apologize! VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): The sport of ferret legging is an endurance contest. Participants vie to determine who can last longest as a live ferret runs loose inside their pants. The current record is five hours and 26 minutes, held by a retired British miner. But I predict that a Virgo will soon break that mark. Could it be you? APRIL FOOL! I misled you. I don’t really think you should put a ferret in your pants, not even to win a contest. It is possible, however, that there will soon be a pleasurable commotion happening in the area below your waist. And I suspect that you will handle it pretty well. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Risk being a crazed fool for love, Libra. Get as wild and extreme as you’ve ever been if it helps you

rustle up the closeness you’re hungry for. Get down on your knees and beg, or climb a tree with a megaphone and profess your passion. APRIL FOOL! I was exaggerating a little. It’s true that now is an excellent time to be aggressive about going after the intimate connection you want. But I suggest you accomplish that by being ingenious and imaginative rather than crazy and extreme. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): British comedy team Monty Python did a sketch in which a policeman apprehends a criminal. The bad guy says, “Yes, I did it, but society is to blame.” And the cop says, “Right! We’ll arrest them instead.” You should adopt this attitude, Scorpio. Blame everyone else but yourself for your problems and flaws. APRIL FOOL! I lied. In fact, the truth is the opposite of what I said. It’s time to take more responsibility for your actions. Bravely accept the consequences of what you’ve done -with your sense of humor fully engaged and a lot of compassion for yourself. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Banzai skydiving is a step beyond ordinary skydiving. To do it, you hurl your folded-up parachute out of the airplane, wait a while, and then leap into mid-air yourself. If all goes well, you free-fall in the direction of your parachute and catch up to it. Once you grab it, you strap it on and open the chute, ideally before you hit the earth. This is the kind of beyond-ballsy activity that would be perfect for you right now. APRIL FOOL! In truth, I don’t recommend banzai skydiving now or ever. Plain old skydiving is fine, though. The same principle applies in relation to any adventurousness you’re considering: Push yourself, yes, but not to an absurd degree. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Should you relocate to Kazakhstan and grow sunflowers? Is it time to think about getting a job in Uruguay and living there for the next ten years? Can you see yourself building your dream home in Morocco on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean? I suggest you spend some quality time thinking way, way outside the box about where you belong on this earth. APRIL FOOL! I went a bit overboard in my recommendations. It is true that you should brainstorm about the kind of home you want to create and enjoy in the future. But that probably means revising and refining your current situation rather than leaving it all behind and starting over. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Your brain has a bigger capacity than you realize. According to professor of psychology Paul Reber, it can hold the equivalent of three million hours’ worth of television shows. As I’m sure you know, your brain is not even close to being full of that much data. And in accordance with the current astrological omens, I suggest you cram in as much new material as possible. APRIL FOOL! I told you a half-truth. While it’s correct that now is an excellent time to pour more stuff into your brain, you should be highly discerning about what you allow in there. Seek out the richest ideas, the most stimulating information, the best stories. Avoid trivial crap. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): July 2012 was a sad time in the history of mythic creatures. The National Ocean Service, a U.S. government agency, made a formal proclamation that there are no such things as mermaids. But I predict those stuffy know-it-alls will soon get a big shock, when a Piscean scientist presents evidence that mermaids are indeed real. APRIL FOOL! I was exaggerating. I don’t really foresee the discovery of a flesh-and-blood mermaid -by a Pisces or anyone else. I do, however, suspect that your tribe is now highly adept at extracting useful revelations and inspirations from dreams, visions, and fantasies -including at least one that involves a coven of Buddhist Ninja clown mermaids. MUSIC FOR THE MIND, BODY & SOUL A

s humans we are diverse and multi-faceted in our character. While we may have much in common with one another we may not share the similar inclinations for everything. However, I believe it is safe to say, all humans love music. We may enjoy diverse styles of music but beats, rhythm’s, and tempos stimulate our bodies to move. Music is powerful and everyone can participate. Studies have proven the power of music facilitates a mind-body connection. While music may move us physically it can reproduce a fond memory linking a song to a specific moment. Music is known to affect every cell in our body. Therefore, it can be a catalyst in healing and assists with relaxation. Naturally, your selection of music makes all of the difference. What may be relaxing to one person may be irritating to another. Music can be a great accompaniment for therapy and relieving stress. Soothing music can work to help a person calm down, lower heart rate, and reduce blood pressure. According to studies of humans and music the brain primarily produces brainwaves at 14 to 30 cycles per second (hertz). These are known as beta waves related to normal consciousness. Alpha waves are present when one is relaxed. These brainwaves generally have frequencies 8 to 14 cycles per second. Theta waves are 4 to 8 cycles per second and are present in a deep and drowsy state. Delta waves are prevalent one is

in a sleep state with fewer than 5 hertz. Music can effect people ranging from calming them down, to energizing them, allowing one to be reflective, or inciting them to riot or fight. How does music move you? What calms you? What lifts your spirit? What causes you to dance? Ponder this idea… How about linking your mind, body, soul and breath with music? The outcome may be peace and harmony. As humans we are drawn to music. We begin moving, we breathe it in and now you are engaged. Many of us exercise to music. We put our ear buds in and go for a run, hike, use the treadmill, or lifts weights to music. The combination of movement with music is cathartic. Serotonin levels in the brain are elevated and one’s mood is altered. A decreased chance of depression is the result. Yoga and Pilates are often accompanied by music. Not only are both disciplines helpful in relieving stress, add music and you have a beautiful compilation. Evolve Yoga will host its 2nd Annual Rock’n Yoga, Wednesday, April 17th (Yoga with DJ James, 6:30pm-8:30pm) and Friday, April 26th (Yoga with The John Stanley King Band, 12:30pm-2:30pm). Each event is $20.00 in studio, $22.00 online, $25.00 at the door. We are honoring and recognizing our local concerts, Coachella and Stagecoach Festival’s. Laser Away

is targeting pigment, the lighter your skin tone the better. Some lasers are specially designed for darker skin types, but will require more treatments. Avoid treatments on tanned skin and never get a treatment over a tattooed area. Sun exposure should be avoided during the course of treatment. Laser hair removal is slightly painful and feels a little like your skin is being snapped with a rubberband. The sensation only lasts a moment, but can be relieved with the application of a topical numbing cream prior to treatment. Some offices may charge a nominal fee for numbing. Keep in mind more than one treatment is necessary. Depending on the area being treated, the density of growth and your body’s personal cycles you may require 5-7 treatments. Since the life cycle of hair has three stages (growing, exfoliating and dormant) it is important to wait 3-4 weeks between treatments in order to target hair in the growth stage. A significant reduction in growth usually won’t be noticed until after your second or third treatment. When choosing your laser hair removal practitioner look for someone experienced who preferably works under the supervision of a dermatologist. The laser utilized should be equipped with a cooling device that makes the treatments more comfortable. I highly recommend obtaining a free consultation before making a decision. Special advertised discounts are common and should be taken advantage of. Many offices offer special pricing for purchasing a treatment package and some even offer financing. With all the options for hair removal and the gift of modern technology, there’s no reason to struggle with unwanted hair anymore.

pa La Quinta at La Quinta Resort & Club has introduced an exclusive new treatment for guests seeking the ultimate in skin rejuvenation. The BTMicro Natural Facelift has received rave reviews from guests who have experienced the treatment and noticed immediate results. The BT-Micro Natural Facelift incorporates a new BT-Micro system which makes use of both ultrasonic and micro-current technologies. A white tea antioxidant mask and herbal enzymes gently exfoliate and cleanse, while the included facial makes use of plant stem- cell serum to deliver a powerful combination of protective and corrective antioxidants. These key ingredients are moved deeply into the skin with the assistance of BT-Micro’s ultrasonic technology. nwanted hair. We all have it somewhere. Lips, chin, ears, underarms, legs, nostrils, and even toes sometimes bear unbearable hair. Sure we can shave, wax, and get electrolysis treatments but the hair keeps coming back. And sometimes it reappears darker and more course than it was to begin with. If your goal is to eliminate the unsightly hair altogether, a series of laser treatments may be just what you need. I’ve fought with unwanted hair and sensitive skin for much of my life. Shaving caused razor burn, waxing required too much maintenance and regrowth. Nair was a joke and electrolysis was downright painful and time consuming. Then I met The Laser. This laser changed my life. I still have some growth since I never completed enough treatments to have it all completely removed. The hair that grows now is lighter in color and softer to the touch. I spend less money on expensive razors, not to mention less time in the shower. I experience far less skin irritation and all of these factors improved my self- confidence by giving me one less thing to worry about. Could you be a good candidate for laser hair removal too? Since the lasers are designed to target pigment in the hair follicle, the darker your hair the better. The lasers simply won’t work on gray, blonde and light red hair. And because the laser
