Forest network historically

Forest network after earthquake
LETS BUILD THE HAHA WALL ODAKA FOREST REVITALIZATION PROJECT Fukushima,Japan
Historically the mountain villages in Odaka, Minamisoma maintained a satoyama landscape between the human habitat and the deep forest. In the last 50 years, firewood, charcoal and timber were gradually substituted by electricity, fuel and steel due to the energy revolution. Without human activities in the forest, the wild forest was pushed to the immediate frontier of the village. After the great earthquake in 2011, the Odaka town was evacuated and the region was left empty for 5 years. Wild animals such as raccoons and wild boars started to dominate the town and caused severe damage to the houses and agricultural lands. This project aims at re-mediating the relationship between the forest and the villages after the earthquake. By creating a continuous haha landscape as a buffer zone near the forest, residents will benefit from the protected territory by the infrastructure. The haha wall can be extended to create hybrid architectural spaces for private and communal usage. Programs such as a bridge lookout, log station, charcoal house, fire wood storage are provided through the haha wall as a starting point for revitalizing forest managing activities.

Type A: Log station The log station provides natural ventilated wood storage space and wood processing workshop. The materials will be rammed earth and logs, which can be directly collected through the process of building the haha landscape and thinning the forest. The haha wall serves as the foundation for supporting the roundwood structure above.

Type C: Communal bridge Since the haha wall creats a boundary between the village and the forest, public access for forest management is reintroduced to the village through the communal bridge. It also provides space for group activities with a view to the forest.

NON STOP BARRANQUILLA SPORTS COMPLEX NESTED IN A TRANSPORTATION HUB Barranquilla, Columbia/Partner:Zhengyang Yue
The project deals with the potential opportunity for using city infrastructures to create social benefits for the people. By integrating the speed of the vehicles with the speed of various sports programs, it will help to provide a playful interaction between the two groups of people. The city does not necessarily need any more
big stadiums, our project could be something atypical. We began to think maybe our project could solve the problem of disconnection while providing space for sports and recreation. Our project started from analyzing the whole site given by the project brief, trying to analyze the disconnection condition, both physical and social disconnection. There are no bike lanes so we propose a bike lane to connect the public institutions on the site. We than combine all the site info into a master plan of potential locations to build our project. We propose that we could build a traffic roundabout with primary and secondary traffic lanes.

The traffic system is stretched vertically into three layers. Then different programs of sports and leisure activities are inserted into the traffic framework according to their different speed and spatial requirement. The result is a hybrid experience of driving and watching sports.

HOUSE OF BELONGINGS AN ELDERLY-FRIENDLY HOUSING COMMUNITY New York/Partner: Rae Zhuang
Situated on a unique site in south Bronx, NYC, the various housing typologies that are already existing in the neighborhood is constantly being transformed and challenged by the users. As people’s lifestyle changes through different stages of life, the design of the housing complex should be more than a programmatic approach. Besides, this proposal features an emphasis on the physical substance of the housing and the techniques used in its transformations. The early research on the demographics predicts a population shift from Manhattan to Bronx in the near future. This project challenges the conventional elderly housing typology to create a more vitalized community that encourages people to stay longer as they are getting old. The project features
a storage wall running across the three blocks to provide a transitional space that tie all the unit together. The wall is evident from both inside and outside, and its concrete materiality and thickness adds to the monumentality of the wall.

A unique element of the housing is specifically designed through this practice, which is the storage space for residents’ personal belongings. While lifestyles may be easy to change, the spaces for storage remain permanent in the project to provide an emotional reference for the residents as they stayed longer in the neighborhood.

ART ON THE MOVE
A BANK THAT COMBINES LOGISTICS WITH EXHIBITION New York
The building is a hybrid typology of an art storage warehouse and a museum, which balances out the fast-paced processing of the online rental with a more traditional gallery spaces for contemplation of art. The art bank seeks for a collaborative culture with the artists by offering free storage for artworks and sharing the value of artwork rental. When dealing with large amount of rental artworks, it will be efficient to frame a sorting system based on the circulating cycle of artworks and its estimated duration in the art bank. Where short-term duration artworks will more likely be handled in a warehouse setting with less exposure to the public, the longer duration artworks will be handled less frequently and have a greater need to be exhibited and displayed. Therefore, the architecture itself should review the interrelationship between the duration of artworks and the different level of exposure to the public.

RED HOOK THEATRE
A combination of theatre and community center New York/Partner: Eugene Chang, Yujing Cui, Ruomeng Wang
The project starts with the idea that the theatre functions as a unique object in the neighborhood, almost like a ship landed on the riverside. Therefore, the building performs as a double skin environment. While theatre space inside has a completely controlled environment, the Lobby and atrium is naturally ventilated and lighted. The objectivity idea also reflects on the envelope and object geometry selection. The solid object of the theatre is chamfered at the bottom to open up spaces for the public program and circulation, and the geometry of the theatre envelope is simplified as triangulated panels to reinforce the dynamic movements of people.

Sitting on the border between two distinct communities, the project features an outdoor passageway for the food trucks that wraps around the indoor swimming pools, juxtaposing the two programs to provide a unique intersection between the swimming and the eating behavior. The organic curves of the building profile is initially defined by the turning radius of the food truck. It efficiently integrates the wall, the pool and the roof to provide an unbrellalike canopy that provides visual transparency between the swimmers and the public.
