Monochrome. I have painted in Venice off and on for over 15 years and each time it has been about colour. Perversely on the last two occasions I have started in monochrome, one colour and was predominately to do with tone. From this starting point , I was able to simplify the light and not deal with too many issues concerned with painting. It allowed me to change easily and think within composition of the rectangle as well as an overall unity. Monochrome & intense earth colour. After a few days I added small amounts of analogous earth colour marginally intenser than the basic monochrome. Charcoal. The charcoal drawings helped me to consider drawing marks and simplifying of details. Colour chords With small watercolours on St Armand paper, I made a proposed imprimatura (dull yellow green) as a base colour. Then an introduction of blue green and red violet. This paper keeps the colour ‘up’. Last works. These are large watercolours by which time eye, heart and medium were given their freedom. Sketchooks. These were studies completed whilst also working on separate sheets and notating the ideas without too much policing.
