Australia has emerged as the hottest extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) producer on the planet, picking up a swag of trophies at the prestigious New York International Olive Oil Competition (NYIOOC) and outshining traditional producers – Italy, Spain and Greece. Considered the ‘Academy Awards’ of the world olive oil industry, Australian extra virgin olive oils starred at the competition picking up almost a quarter (4 out of 17) of the best in class trophies on offer. The quality of Australian extra virgin olive oil was so good that organisers credited Australia with sending ‘shockwaves’ through the global industry and ‘reinventing’ the olive oil trade. Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Olive Association, Lisa Rowntree, said savvy Australian consumers had long recognised Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oils as the best in the world, but global consumers were now discovering the unrivalled quality and freshness of our oil. “What we have in Australia is a perfect climate for olive oil production, combined with a commitment from our producers to taking the highest quality of fruit from the tree to the table with as little disruption as possible. Seeking out the certification triangle logo on Australian products is the best way for consumers to know they are buying the freshest, “The world is now beginning to realise what Australians have known for many years, that Australian extra virgin olive oil is the best you can get. It’s fresh, natural, and free of cholesterol, salt and trans fats, as well as being high in antioxidants and high in monounsaturated fat.” She said.

Red Nose Day 2022

Starlight Children's Foundation Tour de Kids (TdK) challenge

Red Nose Day August 12 2022 is one of the longest-running and most recognisable fundraising campaigns in Australia. For the last 34 years, businesses, schools, childcare centers, individuals and workplaces have taken part to fund research, education and bereavement services to support Australian families. What began as a way for people to get silly for a serious cause has resulted in an incredible 85% reduction in sudden infant death – which equates to over 11,000 babies saved since 1988 Its easy to be involved as an individual or business. Jump on the Red Nose Day website www.rednoseday.org.au and you will find plenty of fun ideas for fundraising or volunteer, or you simply donate.

Starlight Children's Foundation is encouraging Australians around the country to ride for sick kids this September for its annual Tour de Kids (TdK) challenge. Funds raised from the 30-day challenge will go towards delivering happiness to over 60,000 sick kids across Australia. Whether you clock up kilometres in the gym, or enjoy a weekend cycle, Tour de Kids encourages riders of all ages and abilities to beat their personal cycling goals and help raise funds for Starlight's vital hospital services including Captain Starlight and Starlight Express Rooms. For 10-year-old Tommy, diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma, Starlight's programs allowed him to be a kid again and forget about his illness. Tommy's Mum Le-Anne said: "Even the small things Starlight does make a huge difference to sick kids like Tommy and makes them feel special." Starlight CEO Louise Baxter said: "Every minute of every day a child is admitted to hospital. When a diagnosis of serious illness occurs, this can change the course of a child's life and their family's forever." Registrations are now open at tourdekids.org.au. Participants can ride the distance anytime between 1 – 30 September 2022. To find out more, visit tourdekids.org.au PAG E 2 1

It helps improve calcium absorption, so plays an important role in preventing the onset of osteoporosis and aiding sufferers. Blood pressure Several studies for different age groups, and with a large number of participants, have found that the consumption of olive oil is associated with a decrease in blood pressure. Rheumatoid Arthritis Studies have indicated that people with diets containing high levels of olive oil are less likely to develop Rheumatoid Arthritis. It has been shown that the Mediterranean diet can reduce disease activity, pain and stiffness in patients with inflammatory arthritis and may constitute a valuable support for patients. Heart health For persons at high cardiovascular risk, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with Extra Virgin Olive Oil or nuts reduced the incidence of major cardiovascular events. Daily doses of olive oil that is rich in polyphenols may protect from atherosclerosis. In 2004, the Food and Drug Administration allowed the health claim that two tablespoons of olive oil daily may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases Research has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet is associated with a reduced incidence of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. » PAG E 2 6

Extra Virgin Olive Oil has a high smoke point 210°C. Which is well above the ideal temperature for frying food. The ideal temp for deep frying food is 180°C. Remember this… The better the quality of olive oil you use the higher you can heat it before it starts to smoke. The digestibility of olive oil is not affected when it is heated, even when it is re-used several times for frying. Authentic Extra Virgin Olive Oil with very low Free Fatty Acids (FFA’s) is a stable fat, which means it stands up well to high frying temperatures.

Aus tr alia s mos t p opular oils - e xplaine d The following are the most popular oils, there are plenty of other niche oils you could try but you may need to get Googling to find the Australian Made brands. In the below description you will see the term smoke point, this is the point where oil may excessively smoke, once this happens your oil may degrade and loose flavor, and may even affect the flavors of the food you are cooking. It’s not a bad idea to know your oils smoke point, if you notice your pan excevily smokes you may need to change your oil for that dish.

Canola Oil Made from the rapeseed plant. Perfect for cooking, baking or frying, high smoke point of around 205 degrees, mild flavor, and omega-3s, low in saturated fats.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil Known to have more antioxidants and is high in monounsaturated fats. This is the highest quality Olive Oil, has a stronger flavor than Olive Oil and a smoke point of around 200 degrees. Although Extra Olive Oil can be used for cooking its high flavors make it ideal for dressings and dipping bread.

Olive Oil Again a good all-rounder, not quite the quality in flavor and texture as Extra Virgin Olive Oil but its high smoke point makes it excellent to cook with.

PAGE 42

Peanut Oil Great for stir fries, high in monounsaturated fats.

Nut Oils Not all nut oils are suitable for cooking, heat degrades their quality quickly and can spoil the food. Macadamia Oil and Peanut are the main oils for cooking, Flaxseed, Walnut and Linseed oils are for dressings only. » PAG E 2 9

Macadamia Oil Great nutty flavor. Premium grade Macadamia Oil is high in monounsaturats. Great for salads and bread dipping. High smoke point so can also be used for high temperature cooking.

Australian oils are a natural product made from the highest quality oilseeds, and can be enjoyed in a number of dishes. Just as you select wine according to your menu, have a couple of bottles of different oils in your kitchen to bring variety to your cooking, and enjoyment to every meal. T ips • • • • • •

Avoid re-using oils in cooking, it can destroy nutrients & turn healthy oils into unhealthy saturated fats. Never tip oil down the sink. Oil does have a shelf life, especially unrefined oils so the fresher the oil the better the result. Store in a cool place, away from heat. Oil can actually go off if it warms up and cools down. Light Oil, This does not refer to any fat, cholesterol level, it simply refers to the colour. Never use water to extinguish an oil fire, use a fire blanket or smother it with a lid.

THE SAFEST WAY TO WHITEN YOUR TEETH

FOR DENTAL HEALTH WEEK (1-7 AUGUST) THE AUSTRALIAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION PROVIDES CONSUMERS WITH THE SAFEST PATH TO WHITER TEETH

Emeritus Professor Laurie Walsh

There can be little doubt that white teeth shout youth, beauty and health. Indeed one in five Australian adults must agree because that’s how many have whitened their teeth in the last 12 months. But other recent statistics from the Australian Dental Association’s (ADA) 2021 Consumer Survey of 25,000 Aussies show that some people are not taking the safest route to whiter teeth: SURVEY RESULTS • Only 1 in 3 adults whitening their teeth are doing so under the supervision of a dental professional, 19% opting for a take home kit supplied by a dentist and 14% opting for in-clinic whitening, • 39% bought a kit online, 19% got over-the-counter products like strips or gel from a pharmacy or supermarket, and 9% used whitening services provided by someone other than a dental professional. While teeth whitening undoubtedly turns back the hands of time, the means to get there are often pursued in the wrong way by a percentage of the population. That means using products that are above the allowed legal limit of 6% hydrogen peroxide which can result in damage to the gums – or excessive sensitivity of the teeth from failing to see a dentist to check your teeth first. “ If you don’t see a dentist beforehand, you won’t know if you have untreated tooth decay, exposed roots, broken or compromised fillings, cracks or other mouth issues that may well cause pain or discomfort when bleach meets them,” explained Emeritus Professor Laurie Walsh, the ADA’s expert on teeth whitening. “ Then there is the issue of trays - an ill-fitting tray which has not been made from a customised mould designed to fit the exact shape of your teeth, can lead to bleach leaking from the tray, burning gums and soft tissue - and even being swallowed - which may cause ulceration to the throat.” » PAG E 3 5

CONSUMER NEWS

While nearly one in five is whitening using a kit from a supermarket or pharmacy, these carry a multitude of risks: the concentration of whitening agent (hydrogen peroxide) may be unknown. It may be too weak to be effective, making it a waste of time and money, or too strong causing much greater risk of sensitivity, gum ulceration or burning of the gums. Also, some over the counter products use flavours such as citric acid. Recent research has shown that some of these products can erode tooth enamel. Not all mouths are suitable for the whitening process. Prof. Walsh added: “A trip to the dentist rather than opting for an over the counter product or treatment by a non-dental professional will also leave consumers more informed. Your dentist will explain the side effects with tooth whitening that everyone considering this treatment needs to be aware of.”

THE MAIN SIDE EFFECTS INCLUDE: 1. TOOTH SENSITIVITY Teeth are porous and the peroxide bleaching agent/gel can penetrate the tooth, making them more sensitive to cold stimuli. Most sensitivity is transient however, and settles down a short time after the whitening is completed. 2. GUM IRRITATION The gums can be irritated or slightly ulcerated from the peroxide in the bleaching agent or even be irritated by the trays used to hold the gel in place. These irritations usually heal quite quickly. 3. MULTICOLOURED TEETH This is a huge problem if people attempt DIY whitening procedures without consideration of whether they have any fillings, veneers, or crowns on their teeth. These dental filling materials do not change colour and the result can be multi-coloured teeth. The only way to rectify this is to replace the fillings, veneers and crowns. This ends up being more time consuming, invasive, and more expensive than expected. Rather than risk irreversible damage to teeth, it’s safer to consult with the person who knows your teeth the best – your dentist. They can discuss the options, advise whether you or your family member is a suitable candidate for teeth whitening, and supervise the process so that you get the best possible results. If you don’t have a dentist, head to the Australian Dental Association’s Find a Dentist search engine for one in your area, www.ada.org.au/Find-a-Dentist.

AUSTRALIAN MEN ARE MORE LIKELY THAN AUSTRALIAN WOMEN TO GET SICK FROM SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS AND THEIR MORTALITY RATE IS ALSO MUCH HIGHER Here are a few health issues to watch out for to ensure you or the men in your life survive for many more Father’s Days in the future. Men are notorious for ignoring health problems and only going to the doctor when their health problems are advanced resulting in premature death from preventable diseases. Many diseases are preventable and can be picked up with regular check ups with their doctors, the basics like blood pressure, weight, and blood checks for prostate problems can be a great start, it also provides the opportunity to talk about any irregular issues with their health.

REMEMBER EARLY INTERVENTION IS THE KEY Much of these health problems are related to lifestyle as well as hereditary problems such as various cancers and heart disease. It is valuable for men to understand – or to sit down with the men in your life and discuss how their parents or close relatives died to ascertain risk factors and to look at their lifestyle factors including alcohol and drugs, exercise, diet and weight. »

PAG E 3 9

THE SILENT PROBLEMS MALE DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY Many Men will suffer in silence, or try to get through on their own, or hope it will just go away. Many men will help a friend suffering before seeking help for themselves. There is no longer any stigma associated with Mental Health issues, its almost expected that your mental health will be challenged at some stage in your life. If you suffer there is great help available, and it really is as easy as going to your GP to find out how to get started. If you are uncomfortable with going to see someone you can speak to someone online in the comfort and security of your home or office. FACTS One out of every 8 Australian men will experience depression and one in 5 will experience anxiety at some stage in their life. Statistics include: Teenagers and the elderly are particularly at risk. Male depression is associated with an increased risk of health disorders such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Men are likely to resort to destructive behaviours in an attempt to deal with depression. Depression is a known high-risk factor for suicide. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, men of all ages suicide at a higher rate than women.

READY TO CHOOSE ORGANIC? AUSTRALIAN ORGANIC AWARENESS MONTH

LEARN ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF AN ORGANIC LIFESTYLE DURING AUSTRALIAN ORGANIC AWARENESS MONTH THIS SEPTEMBER! More and more Australian shoppers are discovering and turning to organic products with every passing year. 58% of shoppers made an organic purchase in the prior 12 months, up from 56% in 2021; but what are the reasons behind this shift? WHAT DEFINES ‘ORGANIC’? In Australia, organic products contain no artificial additives, synthetic chemicals or GMOs (genetically modified organisms). This means that by choosing organic, you are opting for a product that was grown the way nature intended, using sustainable and regenerative methods. In 2022, there are fantastic organic food and drinks options available for breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between. Organic cosmetics and textiles are on the market, PAG E 5 2

supermarkets stock a variety of organic baby and toddler food, and of course there’s some great organic choices for your pets too. Some manufacturers of household items have even left behind traditionally synthetic chemicalladen products to create organic alternatives to clean your home and maintain your garden. Regardless of your needs, there is bound to be a certified organic product to suit you. WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE CERTIFIED ORGANIC PRODUCTS? Not all organic products are made equally. In Australia, the term ‘certified organic’ means the farm, product or service has been independently, third party verified by a government-approved certification body. This means that every part of the supply chain has been rigorously testing and adhered to a strict organic Standard, »

The organic sector in Australia is thriving, but businesses face a multitude of challenges in bringing the highest quality organic products to market. By participating in AOAM and choosing certified organic, you are supporting the farmers, processors, manufacturers and retailers who work hard so behind the scenes to supply the growing consumer base. such as the Australian Certified Organic Standard (ACOS) or National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic Produce (NS). Audits are then carried out annually to maintain certification. Certification is so important because currently there is no Australian domestic regulation around the use of the term ‘organic’ on product packaging. This means products can claim to be ‘organic’ on their labels, even if they contain as little as two per cent organic ingredients. Australian Organic Limited (AOL), the peak body for the organic industry, is working closely with its members and the Australian Government to develop a mandatory standard that will ensure shoppers will always be able to trust a product claiming to be organic. Until then, it’s important to look for certification marks, such as the Bud logo, on organic products. WHAT IS AUSTRALIAN ORGANIC AWARENESS MONTH? Australian Organic Awareness Month (AOAM) is the nation’s largest campaign promoting the certified organic industry in Australia. The annual campaign is an opportunity to clarify to consumers exactly what organic means, as well as highlight the benefits of choosing an organic lifestyle. All month, AOL will be encouraging consumers to look for organic certification logos on their purchases, as well as promoting the certified organic industry across all categories, including fresh produce, packaged food and beverages, cosmetics and skincare, home and garden products, textiles and even pet food! Organic business owners are encouraged to participate in AOAM by hosting events, promotions and offers that might encourage consumers to try an organic option for the very first time. PAG E 5 4

GETTING INVOLVED Australian Organic Awareness Month wouldn’t be possible without the support of a range of certified organic brands who participate as sponsors. Major supermarkets and wholesalers through to independent retailers and stores participate every year. You can visit the Awareness Month website for a full list of participating businesses, and keep an eye out for the AOAM logo in-store and online. As a consumer, one of the best ways you can participate in Awareness Month is to keep an eye out for the Bud logo and other certification marks. Thousands of certified organic products on sale in Australia carry the Bud trademark logo, and you may not have even known that some of your favourite products are certified organic! To learn more about how you can benefit from an organic lifestyle including tips, recipes, FAQs and exclusive special offers, visit budorganic.com. au and sign up to Bud Organic Club for free. KEY INSIGHTS FROM AUSTRALIAN ORGANIC CONSUMER TRUST SURVEY 2022 58% of shoppers purchased organic in the past 12 months. 63% of shoppers recognise the ‘Bud’ trademark logo.

MEXICAN PORK CHILLI

Serves: 6-8

INGREDIENTS 1.8-2kg Pork Loin or Tenderloin, cubed (small) 2-3 Habanero chillies, seeded and finely sliced 3 Chipotle chillies, kept whole, no need to reconstitute them 2 bay leaves 2 medium onions, chopped 6 clove of garlic minced

1 can diced tomatoes 1 standard bottle of beer 1 standard bottle of apple or pear cider 1 tbsp chilli powder 3 tbsp salt 1 tbsp dried Oregano 1 tbsp sweet Paprika 1 tbsp sugar 1 tbsp cocoa powder

3 tbsp flour 6 tbsp Mexican cornmeal 4 tbsp vegetable oil 2 tbsp vinegar 1/4 tbsp ground black pepper 1/2 tbsp Cayenne Pepper 1/2 cup spring onions finely chopped 1/2 cup strong black coffee Cilantro leaves for garnish Can of red kidney beans (optional)

METHOD 1. Combine the flour, cornmeal, chilli powder, salt & pepper. Place this mixture in a large plastic bag with the pork pieces. Close the bag and toss the meat around until well coated with the flour mixture.

2. Meanwhile heat the oil in a heavy based saucepan or frying pan and flash fry the seasoned Pork pieces in batches until slightly browned, set aside to rest.

4. A dd to the same pan the onions, fresh chilli, spring onions and garlic. Saute gently until tender. 5. Transfer the Pork to a large pot, add the onion mixture and all remaining dry ingredients (except

Cilantro). Give it a good stir with a wooden spoon. Lastly add the tomatoes and liquids, bring to the simmer, partially cover and allow it to simmer away (on low heat) for 2 hours - add additional water if the Pork Chilli threatens to become too dry. 7. After the first two hours of simmering, check the seasonings and allow the chilli to cook further (uncovered) to reduce it to the required consistency. 8. Once the desired consistency is reach you can choose to serve it, but I prefer to place it in the fridge overnight. This allows the flavors to really develop and settle down. Any solidified fat is then removed. The beans are then added to the chilli, heat through again and serve with the Cilantro garnish and corn chips on the side. PAG E 6 9

SO WHAT MAKES A VEGAN FRIENDLY WINE, VEGAN? CONSUMER INTEREST IN VEGAN WINES IS GROWING, WITH VEGANFRIENDLY WINES SHOWING UP IN MANY SUPERMARKETS AND GOOGLE SEARCHES FOR “VEGAN WINE” SOARING IN RECENT YEARS. It may seem surprising at first that not all wines are ‘vegan friendly’, given that wine is made by fermentation of grapes and finishing up in a bottle, cask or can.

LETS FIND OUT »

VEGAN WINE

CONVENTIONAL WINEMAKING In conventional winemaking, additions and manipulations can be extensive. There are about 40 processing aids and 19 additives approved for use in Australia. The intention is to create a wine that meets specific target markets. The critical step from a vegan perspective is the final step of finishing the wine prior to bottling. Wines are routinely tasted prior to bottling. It’s often at this stage that a decision to add a protein to manipulate the taste profile of the wine or to clarify or stabilise the wine. NOW HERE’S THE PROBLEM FOR VEGANS In current winemaking practice, the proteins in use include gelatine, sourced from either bovine or porcine collagen, or isinglass, sourced from fish swim bladder, egg white and milk, either fresh or powdered casein. Simply put, the use of these animal products makes the wines unacceptable to vegans. ALTERNATIVES TO ANIMAL PROTEINS? Proteins derived from plants would appear to be an obvious alternative and while some are available commercially, most work is still in the research stage. Obtaining regulatory approval across international markets is a significant barrier to the commercialisation of new products for use in wine. The desire to satisfy the expanding vegan-friendly market will undoubtedly drive the development of suitable products. THE LABELLING QUESTION Australia has comprehensive rules regarding wine labelling, including the need to specify allergens. This includes milk and eggs, but not the other animal-derived fining proteins. This can cause considerable uncertainty when selecting wines that are vegan-friendly. Some wine labels now have a statement such as “this wine has been treated with fish product and traces may remain”. Increasingly, wines are now labelled as “vegan-friendly” or “no animal products were used in the preparation of this wine”. THE TASTE TEST At a recent tasting of organic and biodynamic wines, some I presented were made by the conventional method, while others met the vegan-friendly criteria. The general comment after the tasting was: I couldn’t tell the difference. A work of caution. ‘Organic wine’ commonly refers to the grape growing practice while the winemaking may follow the conventional practice. My advice is to explore with an open mind, read the label carefully and enjoy the many options now available.

FEATURE

SPRING CLEAN

Cleaning Outside Windows Wipe the window with a dry cloth first, this will get rid of loose dust and hard to see webs. For outside Windows you could go through a lot of spray cleaners so save that for the inside windows. Use cold water with a dash of detergent, some say warm water evaporates quickly on glass and can create fog or condensation. Make sure your water is clean, you may need to change the water for each house sized window. Wipe in the same direction. And if you want to halve the time it takes invest in a window squeegee with a rubber blade. You may as well do the screens as well, warm soapy water and a gentle wipe, no good having clean windows with a dirty screen. Basic maintainance. Fix the leaky tap. Did you know many bugs that enter houses will stay if they find a ready water source so fix that leaky tap. Repair broken grout, it’s a pretty easy job and hard to get wrong so give it a go. Any hardware or tile store sells small amounts of grout in a variety of colours- simply wet mix and insert into cracks, it’s that easy. Replace damaged flywire, as it’s not working even if it has a small hole in it. PAG E 8 6

Throwing things away Most of us will go through wardrobes, pantries, and cupboards eager to move on as many things as possible. Our first thought may be to simply throw stuff away, but although that’s a quick solution you would be better off donating unwanted goods to charity, clothes can go to the Salvo’s, Op shop or even the big clothing bins, house hold goods and furniture straight to the op shop, please don’t send items that are broken or unsellable. And remember to recycle when you can. Reducing dust Dust first, vacuum last, don’t forget to clean the ceiling fans and dust above the lamp shades (use the brush attachment on your vacuum) and curtains and above curtain rails. You can reduce a lot of dust by simply having more door mats, one on the inside and one on the outside. If you seem to have a lot of dust check you entry doors, if you don’t have dust strips or mats you should consider getting some, they also save your heat and air conditioning from escaping.

Check Cupboards All cupboards have corners where dust and grime can gather, so make sure you check out those corners and remove any build up. Things that should checked annually • Batteries in smoke alarms • Ducted heating ducts and air filters. • All ceiling ducts fans (like the ones in your bathroom ceiling). • Down pipes and gutters as water doesn’t just overflow when they are full, water can actually start flowing back into your ceiling or house structure. • Clean oven hood vent • Clean dishwasher filter

EXPERTS SAY HAVING QUALITY DENTAL CARE CAN EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR PET BY UP TO FIVE YEARS. dental check with a vet twice a year. There are plenty of video’s online that show effective brushing techniques. Bones and chewing toys do still provide good plaque removal, this should be on top of regular brushing. If you can make it a fun and a loving experience for your pet the easier it will be. The earlier you start the easier it is to train your pet. TRY THIS BEFORE BRUSHING • Massage your dogs’ gums for 30 secs – practice evert day or so until they seem comfortable with the feeling. • Put a tiny bit of pet toothpaste on your finger and let them lick it off, so it gets used to the taste. • After a few weeks of the above training try brushing. If the toothbrush is not working, try a finger brush. WATCH OUT FOR DENTAL PROBLEMS Pets may not show signs of pain as their animal instinct ensures they do not show weakness but if you do notice any of these symptom’s chances are your pet has a serious dental problem. Bad breath Loss of appetite Loss of weight Low energy Bleeding gums Blood on toys Chewing on one side of the mouth. Black or dark areas on gums or teeth.

FORECAST RECORD AUSTRALIAN WINTER CROP PLANTING SEES POTENTIAL FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE BUMPER HARVEST Australia is laying the groundwork for a third consecutive bumper harvest, with this year’s total planted crop area forecast to reach a record 23.83 million hectares, Rabobank says in its just-released 2022/23 Winter Crop Outlook. This would be nearly one per cent up on last year’s record planting and 11 per cent above the five-year average. It includes a 1.4 per cent lift in wheat and a record canola planting, up 20.9 per cent on last year, albeit at the expense of barley, oats and pulses. PAG E 9 2

In a year of global shortages and high commodity prices – the forecast record planting comes as global markets look to Australia to deliver a “hat trick of great grain and oilseed production” at a time when poor production and export constraints in a number of countries are prompting the United Nations to warn that the world is on the brink of a food crisis.

MALES NEED NOT APPLY

A unique all-female species of grasshopper that can reproduce without sex provides fascinating insights into evolution, new research led by the University of Melbourne has found. Published today in Science, the research shows the Australian grasshopper Warramaba virgo (W. virgo) – a parthenogenetic species, meaning it can reproduce asexually by cloning itself – was just as ecologically successful as its counterparts that breed by sex. Lead author Professor Michael Kearney said “Parthenogenetic species in theory should be suffering from parasites and a high load of bad mutations. Our study finds no disadvantage to W. virgo.” PAG E 94

Co-author Professor Ary Hoffmann said sexual reproduction could be costly. “Finding a mate takes time and energy and comes with an increased risk of predation. If we can do away with males and still have viable offspring and the species thrives, then why do we bother with sex at all?” Professor Hoffmann said. The W. virgo is estimated to have evolved from a hybrid mating between two other grasshopper species (W. whitei and W. flavolineata) more than 250 thousand years ago.
