FIT LEAD THE PSYCHOLOGY OF EXERCISE AND LEADERSHIP ‘A healthy mind lives in a healthy body.’ The Caribbean and the rest of the world are currently faced with the crisis of an increase in lifestyle diseases among other things. This issue is one that cuts across socio-economic groups, cultures and gender. Our leaders, in whatever sphere – political, corporate and social – are just as susceptible to becoming unwell as the rest of us. The seemingly superhuman qualities that great levels of success can bring are only a façade if not backed by a balanced lifestyle. Exercise has been shown to not only improve

Reasons Why Good Fitness Makes for Better Leadership
1
Energy and Productivity: Maintaining a regular exercise routine will give you more energy throughout the day. As a leader when you have more energy, you are more likely to face the challenges of the day aggressively and confidently. Caribbean

physical fitness but also mental health. In today’s fast-paced and ‘instant’ world, industry leaders most times have to take quick decisions on the go that can positively or negatively impact hundreds or even thousands of employees and team members. Being physically and mentally fit is the foundation for good leadership that places emphasis on discipline, self-control and determination.
A healthy leader has the potential to inspire employees not only to model their behavior with physical wellness but all the other positive spin offs such as being energetic, engaged and ready for the many challenges presented in the workplace. Dr Kurdell Espinosa, Jermaine Deans and Elon Parkinson are the embodiment of leaders fit for the task. All have very demanding roles yet manage to lead very balanced and active lives. We hope that you will be inspired by their profiles, igniting your inner flame for success through health and wellness.
. 2
Confidence and Creativity: A fit leader will have more confidence and solve problems more creatively. Studies show that our cognitive ability to be creative increases with even moderate levels of exercise.

Men who have marital partners also live longer than men without spouses; men who marry after age 25 get more protection than those who tie the knot at a younger age, and the longer a man stays married, the greater his survival advantage over his unmarried peers. But is marriage itself responsible for better health and longer life? 12 | Caribbean

Although it's hard to be sure, marriage seems to deserve at least part of the credit. Some have argued that self-selection would skew the results if healthy men are more likely to marry than men with health problems. But research shows the reverse is true: unhealthy men actually marry earlier, are less likely to divorce, and are more likely to remarry following divorce or bereavement than healthy men.

n recent times an isolate of green coffee beans called chlorogenic acid has been the hot topic of many discussions. It is reported to be a miracle substance for quick weight loss, which exerts an anti-obe-
sity effect and can assist in resolving the weight problems of both men and women. Bio-Tech R&D Institute and its lead scientist and chairman, Dr. Henry Lowe, carried out preliminary research on Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans and the findings have further demonstrated the potential of chlorogenic acid to manage weight and obesity.
Health benefits of Green Coffee Beans and Chlorogenic Acid
also known as 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid and 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid is a natural compound found in relatively large quantities in green coffee beans. It also occurs in other plant materials

management but also for the ability to boost stamina, reduce exercise recovery time, improve joint health, boost brain function and provide an overall surge of youthful energy. The scientific data has supported the fact that chlorogenic acid holds promise in many other aspects of health, wellness and cognitive function similar to antioxidants and bioflavonoid. Research has also shown that chlorogenic acid may not only aid your body's ability to burn fat and melt away those excess pounds, but can also reverse years of damage. This is due to its extremely potent fat burning properties, as well as its anti-inflammatory, immunity-enhancing characteristics and anti-oxidant effect.

According to Lindsey Duncan, ND, CN—an alternative health specialist and celebrity nutritionist, ‘the key ingredient in the green coffee bean is a very important natural active compound called chlorogenic acid. It works by inhibiting the release of glucose in the body, while at the same time boosting the metabolism or the burning of fat in the liver. These two mechanisms work together to inhibit the absorption of fat and eliminate weight gain.’ Research also suggest that chlorogenic acid could enhance metabolism of stored fats without diet or exercise, and so reduce body weight by up to ten per cent, decrease hunger significantly as well as boost the immune system. The Dr. Oz Show conducted its own clinical trials on green coffee beans extracts and recommends at least 800 mg green coffee extract with at least 45 per cent or 360 mg of chlorogenic acid should be taken 30 minutes before eating, twice daily.
Nb. It should be noted that nothing is more effective than maintaining a regular exercise regimen and a healthy diet and is also strongly recommende

Potential for Jamaica Coffee and Nutraceutical Industries
through the development of health
It is a well known phenomenon that certain medicinal plants from Jamaica are often of exceptional quality and bioactivity. Guinea hen weed from Jamaica has shown to be up to 40 per cent more potent against prostate cancer than guinea hen weed analyzed from other countries. Jamaican Ball Moss in recent years has been acknowledged as a new medicinal plant with great potential against cancers and diabetes. Our ginger is also more flavorful than ginger grown anywhere else in the world. Coffee grown in Jamaica shares a similar story, Jamaica’s Blue Mountain coffee is touted as being the best in world.
ing need for Jamaica’s agricultural industry to produce more value added products from the traditional crops produced and Bio-Tech’s own mandate to improve the quality of people’s lives particularly care products such as nutraceutical supplements; the Bio-Tech R&D Institute has embarked on several research activities focused on Jamaica’s coffee. These research activities include the development of dietary supplements and nutraceuticals. The development of a chlorogenic acid nutraceutical from Jamaican coffee can boast the industry with the production of this highly desired value added product. This will further stimulate economic development by boosting the coffee industry, create more jobs, earn additional foreign exchange and promote a non-traditional value added exports from coffee. Our new chlorogenic acid nutraceutical is projected to reach the market by the second quarter of 2013.

Remember that you are in a position to control your financial destiny by employing early financial awareness and good money management skills; these are key components for creating a successful fall back plan or rainy day fund. Being in control of your financial destiny is also important for these reasons:

MONEY
{ Sometimes the choices we make to save money right now commit us to spending more down the road. }
Buying food in bulk and then throwing half of it away
I'm guilty of this one from time to time because bargains are so hard to pass up. When you see a whole bunch of bananas on sale for less than half price, you grab them. But then you watch them turn black because you bought too many. I have lost count of the food items I have bought over my lifetime that I never got a chance to consume. Ironically, when I was a poor student, it didn't happen. I would shop from day to day, buying fresh produce and cooking it that night. It would last two or three meals, and then I'd start again. The fridge was bare. These days, I have so much stuff in the fridge I don't know what's in there, and I think that's a big problem. We load up on cheap bulk items and then have no way of using it all. So while buying in bulk is good for lots of things, be careful when buying perishables. It's not a bargain if you throw it away.

regular maintenance,
For instance, if you go to a store looking for jam
just like your own body. But many of us like to save that money and do only the basics. We'll take it in for an oil change, run it through the car wash and that's about it. Of course, then the time comes to get your next oil change, and the mechanic has to inform you that your tires are worn on one side because you didn't rotate them. Or you discover that little knocking sound you ignored now signals a major repair. When it comes to cars, the old adage "a stitch in time saves nine" couldn't be more true. Take care of your car, and it will take care of you.
and you see BOGO free on jam, that's probably a great time to stock up. But if you're looking for a new pair of sneakers and see BOGO half off, stop and think. You went out looking to spend $3000 on sneakers. Now you're spending about $5000, including tax. Did you even want two pairs? Will you wear them both? Do you even like the second pair you're buying? Sure, it can be a great deal, but if you really only want, and need, one pair, you should only buy one pair. Also, be careful when exploring the sales. It's easy to see those 75%-off stickers and go crazy, thinking you're saving money. If you are planning to resell the item for a profit, go for it. But don't think you'll get anything near full price for it somewhere else; there's a reason it's on sale. And if you are tempted to buy it just because it's cheap, ask yourself, "Would I have bought this if it were more expensive?" I see so many people buying bargains that just gather dust under the bed. And they would happily sell them for the price they paid just to have that money back.

ur economy has gone through some pretty frightening changes in the last year or two, and most of us are still being affected. How we react to these changes will determine whether we prosper or fail, as individuals, and as a nation. Will you wave the white flag and hope that better days are coming, or will you adapt and overcome? I choose the latter. Whether you call it a down-turn, recession, slow-down, or even the dreaded depression, the truth is that it is up to us to use our changing economy as an opportunity to excel.

It’s hard to find quality information on the news these days. What you can easily find is infinite quantities of spin and hype. Don’t focus on the gloom and doom, sensationalist reporting. Stay positive, even if times have gotten tough. You’ll be fine, but you’re probably going to have to make some changes in your life.
Do someThing DifferenT A month ago, a friend was telling me about his woes. ‘I’m a union electrician, and I haven’t worked in over a year. I’ve never seen it this bad in all my years working

For example, if you have years of experience playing golf, then you probably have knowledge and information that is worth money. Put an ad on a social network site, local news paper or something similar, and start giving lessons. Get yourself a few good customers and you’ll be right back where you were in terms of income, and you’ll be doing something different and presumably more enjoyable in the process.

EHF Brings Smiles and Security to Penrith Basic Basic School
Penrith Basic School recenly received improvements to their physical security and play areas following interventions from Environmental Health Foundation (EHF), the not-for-profit local organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of people’s lives through educational and health based projects and programmes, as well as environmental and science & technology initiatives. EHF’s ability to fulfill the needs of the nations’ most vulnerable has once again proven why it is one of Jamaica’s leading social-outreach organizations. EHF, through its support and contribution to Early Childhood Development, protracted its focus to Penrith Basic School, located at 14 Penrith Road, Kingston 5 (Cross Roads area). Prior to EHF’s intervention, Penrith Basic School lacked a number of security features mandatory for the safety of the students and staff. Assessment of the school’s facilities revealed that the following works urgently needed to be undertaken:
i) Erection of a permanent parameter fence around
EHF’s Basic School Project Committee realized that the situations faced by Penrith Basic School falls within its mandate to ‘select schools in depressed neighborhoods and create a learning environment that will inspire, challenge and prepare children to be achievers.’ EHF’s involvement solidified its efforts ‘to improve the health and educational status of children aged 2 – 6 years and the quality of the environment in which they learn.’ Having received the well needed upgrades, the school’s administration and children were exceedingly pleased and expressed sincere appreciation for the donations.

, Science Technology InnovatIon & Factor The Health & Wellness
by Richard Kelly
'Come and have your cold bush' is a stern command we are accustomed to throughout the
Caribbean. Our parents and especially our grandparents were confident in their knowledge of the various plant remedies for all kinds of illnesses from the common cold to diabetes to the much dreaded ‘wash-out’ before going back to school for a new year in September. The point is our ancestors were adept at transmitting generational knowledge that helped to make people better in the absence of modern medicine or lack of access to it. In a way we could say that they were ‘scientist’ opening up a reservoir of knowledge to health and wellness. They identified the important link between knowledge, creativity and good health. My aim is to highlight the important role science, technology and innovation (STI) play in ensuring that there is universal access to excellent health and wellness. What is STI? Science is simply the study of the structure and behaviour of the natural world through observation and experiment with a view to generate new knowledge. Technology involves the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Innovation is the conversion of knowledge and novel, implementable ideas into products, processes or services for commercial and public use. Health is the state of being free from illness or injury. A person that has complete wellness practices a lifestyle that offers the highest levels of physical, mental, social and spiritual health. The generation of knowledge, the application of that knowledge to practical use and the conversion of that knowledge into products and processes to benefit people is integral to sustaining health and wellness. Imagine what the health of the people all over the world would be like without the often serendipitous interventions of Alexander

Fleming, Louis Pasteur, Ben Carson, T.P. Lecky, Henry Lowe, Manley West and Gerald Lalor. The annals of history are replete with the stories of men and women who systematically applied science and the scientific method to improve the health of mankind and to fight disease. STI therefore plays a critical role in health and wellness. It is impossible to be healthy and well without knowledge of what makes us healthy.

xclusive breast feeding provides adequate nutrition for the first four to six months of life and is recom-
mended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for this period. The normal, full-term baby does not require supplements of water, formula or vitamins for the first six months of life. Breast milk production begins when the baby begins to suck after birth but full production does not come on stream until the 3rd or 4th day after birth. Breast milk production is encouraged by putting baby to the breast immediately after birth and thereafter by feeding the baby on demand. Most normal full term newborn infants will demand the breast as often as every two to three hours.

n a world where many of us are too busy to meet new people let alone find a partner, online
dating allows us to facilitate a romantic connection in our own time. You don't have to leave your house to get a date; no need to drop a pound or two and drag yourself to a singles bar where everyone is on the pull. All you need is a couple of taps on your keyboard and presto! Richard appears on your screen telling you that he ‘loves to laugh, isn't needy, loves his mother more than life itself, and he can find time for the love of a good woman.’ Online dating is also faster than waiting for your best friend to fix you up on a blind date, only to find out you have nothing in common. So how many blind dates is your friend going to arrange before she gets the hint she’s not Cupid and you start to realize that you are ‘too hard to please.’

And she can choose to interact with any one of them or even all of them at the same time, at her own convenience. She even has cyber sex (getting intimate with her web cam). Now that’s what I call good clean fun. Online you can chat and meet as many people as you like without the risk of being labeled as easy. You don’t normally join a dating agency for friends, but you could give him the benefit of the doubt if his profile seems interesting. Compatibility online can be assessed quickly. When you cyber chat you can get an idea if you are going to connect mentally and spiritually through conversation and communication. This is an elimination

Pork Belly
Stuffed with Apples Served with Honey Sweet Potatoes Puree by
Chef Anthony Matthews
Pork belly is the only part of the pig that is widely under used in the Caribbean. This is because the lining of the pigs’ belly is known for its high fat content. However, the way our farmers currently raise and feed their animals; the belly of the pigs now has a lot of muscular tissues. The consumption of this white meat has more than doubled over recent years. We now use every part of the pig, from the hooter to the tooter. It's not uncommon to attend an event and see everyone gathered around the rotating suckling pig with mouths watering.

iseases of the hair and scalp are not specific to black people, but the nature of afro textured hair is prone to many conditions that don’t easily affect other hair types. African hair tends to be very dry with the cuticle weathering much more easily.
The kinks and coils along the hair strand make African hair prone to breakage and mechanical damage which is a contradiction of the myth that touts this type of hair as stronger than white or Asian hair.

Head lice These are tiny insects that live on the scalp and spreads through close contact with a person who has lice. It can also spread by touching their clothing, bedding or sharing hats, towels, brushes, or combs. It spreads rather easily especially in overcrowded conditions. Head lice may also be found in eyebrows and eyelashes. Tiny eggs on the hair look like flakes of dandruff. However, instead of flaking off the scalp, they stay put. Head lice can live up to 30 days on a human. Their eggs can live for more than two weeks. Symptoms include, intense itching of the scalp, tiny white specks (eggs or nits) on the bottom of each hair that are hard to get off and small, red bumps on the scalp, neck and shoulders.
