Introduction Hello Readers and ‘Welcome’ to the 8th annual Water Music Festival. We hope the fact that you are reading this brochure means that you are trying to decide which of our many wonderful performances you are going to attend. We think you may well be spoiled for choice this year. Whether you are a classical music lover, a jazz enthusiast, a traditional and folk music follower, a rock fan, just curious or even tone deaf, we have something for you to really enjoy. From our now established and highly acclaimed Lakelands Gala Proms through our rock, folk, jazz and blues acts to sensational guitarist Carlos Bonell, you are in for a real treat indeed. We have positioned the festival to make it accessible and to bring quality music to the discerning music lover. Our fantastic Lakelands Gala Proms is attracting attention right across the country and is selling out within days of tickets going on sale. This year’s theme of ‘rogues, villains and victims’ put together by our esteemed conductor Fergus Sheil, shouldn’t be interpreted as a metaphor for modern day Ireland, but a rather delicious offering of classics from Liszt, Bizet, Mozart, Lloyd Webber, Gershwin, Puccini, Barber, Lèhar and many, many others. If you love classical music, come to this performance. If you are just curious about classical music, come to this performance – you’ll go home a different person. This year we are breaking new ground by including a series of music education workshops for children. We hope by doing this that we will help to encourage young people to take up music, to sing, play an instrument, to write, to take part, to improve, to enrich their lives. That would be a great legacy for this festival. Speaking of great legacies, we come to you this year without our heroic title sponsor of the past seven years, MBNA/Bank of America and without our equally heroic former Chairperson and co-founder of the festival, Fr. Turlough Baxter who transferred to Athlone last year. Fr. Baxter’s role as Chair was always one of enthusiasm, utter dedication and the occasional prayer to invoke manna from heaven – manna in the form of sponsors, donors and sunshine. Turlough always said that everything else would take care of itself if we got that much. Somehow it always did. MBNA/Bank of America has been the festival title sponsor since the very beginning back in 2005. Without their gigantic support this festival would not be here today. In fact, were it not for the enthusiasm of its then CEO in Carrick on Shannon, Ian O’Doherty, the festival probably wouldn’t have seen the light of day. Fr. Turlough had the idea, discussed it with fellow classical enthusiast Ian, and between them created a vision, pulled a team together and the Water Music Festival was born.

The seven year commitment from MBNA came to a natural end last year and as the company moves on to a new beginning, we wish to acknowledge and pay tribute to its former CEOs Ian O’Doherty and Will Curley, to Aoife Duffy who stepped in as Festival Chair when Ian moved away, to its management and staff, many of whom were involved as committee members in the past, to Suzanne Holmes former Director of Communications and to its current CEO Bryan Kelly. Their contribution to the festival has been magnificent and their involvement has brought some wonderful music and memorable performances to Carrick on Shannon. The festival also acknowledges its gratitude to Failte Ireland, Leitrim County Council, Leitrim Tourism, Leitrim Development Company and Lakelands & Inland Waterways, for their significant financial contribution and other areas of support which are vital to the survival and progression of the festival. We are also greatly indebted this year to everyone who pledged a donation to us on our online ‘fundit’ campaign. Celtic Legends with Paul Gurney

A warm and wonderful evening of entertainment by a group of Drumshanbo-based consummate professionals is in store! Multi-talented Gian Castello studied flute with the renowned John Lee of Donegal and the legendary Micho Russell of Clare. A fervent follower of Celtic culture with roots in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany, Gian has recorded six CDs in the Bardic Tradition, among them To Drive the Cold Winter Away, Taliesin – Political and Musical Re-elaboration of a Legend, and Rama, The Primordial Druid. Gian enthralls with his playing of the concert flute, tin whistle, and dulcimer. Devon MacGillivray (fiddle, vocals), Drumshanbo via Boston, is long involved in music, both classical and traditional, and has her heritage roots in the Cape Breton tradition. Kitia Benedetti (bodhrán, narration/recitation) is an actress by vocation and lends a lovely balance. Based in Longford (originally from Kiltyclogher), well-known music producer/sound engineer Rig the Jig’s Paul Gurney enhances all with is keyboards and guitar contributions.

Carlos Bonell Classical Guitarist

sponsored by Vistamed Carlos Bonell studied at the Royal College of Music with John Williams. He gained prominence through his Decca recording of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and Charles Dutoit. His discography includes more than 20 CD and DVD recordings ranging from the music of Queen and the Beatles to the Bach lute suites. Since 2006 Carlos has been helping Sir Paul McCartney in editing, notating and recording a concerto he is composing for guitar and orchestra. 5.15 pm: The concert is preceded by a display and tasting of Fair Trade products available in the town. Fergus Sheil (conductor) Fergus Sheil is one of Ireland’s leading conductors appearing regularly with orchestras, choirs and opera companies at home and abroad. Fergus studied music in Trinity College in his native Dublin and he trained in conducting with Leon Barzin in Paris. In 1995 he won the BRI Conducting competition run by the National Association of Youth Orchestras in the UK. He has appeared in concert with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Ulster Orchestra, the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the Northern Sinfonia (UK), the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and many other groups. In 2011 he toured Ireland with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in a series of concerts and education workshops involving several youth orchestras. In Opera, Fergus has worked for Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera Ireland, Wexford Festival Opera, Opera Theatre Company, NI Opera and Lyric Opera Productions. In 2012 he founded Wide Open Opera and will conduct its inaugural performances of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, Dublin as part of the 2012 Dublin Theatre Festival on Sept 30th, Oct 3rd and 6th. Fergus Sheil is also active in the choral field and has appeared with numerous choirs. In 2010 he initiated the Kilkenny Festival Chorus which has been part of Kilkenny Arts Festival since. Also in 2010 he produced and conducted a four-concert tour of the State Choir Latvija throughout Ireland in a programme marking the 75th birthday of composer Arvo Pärt. He will conduct the BBC Singers in a tour of Ireland at Easter 2013. Strongly committed to new music, in 2011 Fergus curated and conducted the first opera commissioned by a local authority in Ireland – Shelter Me from the Rain by Brian Irvine (music) and John McIlduff (text) – for Carlow Local Authorities. He has conducted about 40 premieres of new works by Irish and international composers. As well as performances at home, Fergus has also undertaken engagements in the USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia, UK, France, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Estonia. His work has been broadcast on radio, television in many European countries. This is Fergus’s third appearance with the Carrick Water Music Festival.

Opera Theatre Company - Young Associate Artists Programme - Designed to bridge the gap between thirdlevel education and the highly competitive professional opera scene, the Programme offers individually tailored top-level coaching in singing, language and stagecraft, together with appropriate performance experience and exposure to international opera. Opera Theatre Companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Young Associate Artists are selected on the basis of their talent and immediate potential for further development. Whether about to complete or having just completed their formal studies, they will be at a stage in their development when they are able to gain maximum benefit from the Programme. They are treated as young professionals in their own right and have an ambassadorial role as representatives of Opera Theatre Companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artistic ethos. Grace Bermingham (soprano) Dublin born soprano Grace Bermingham studies with Virginia Kerr at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, having completed her BA degree in English and Music at NUI Maynooth, Grace received a First Class Honours in Vocal Performance and went on to complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Performance at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

Anna Brady (soprano) Anna achieved her BA in Music Performance from the Royal Irish Academy of Music with a First Class Honours degree in June 2011. She is currently a part-time student in the RIAM studying with Suzanne Murphy.

Fearghal Curtis (tenor) Fearghal has recently completed the BMus programme at the Conservatory of Music and Drama, DIT. He is continuing his studies at the Conservatory under the tutelage of Stephen Wallace.

Padraic Rowan (bass baritone) Padraic Rowan is currently studying for a Masters in Music Performance at the Royal Irish Academy of Music with Mary Brennan and Brenda Hurley (Repetiteur), having previously completed an undergraduate degree in International Relations at Dublin City University.

Enchiriadis means “music of many voices”. Recent winners of the Premier Competition for International Choirs, the Irish Mixed Voice Choir and the Best Irish Language Song at the first Mayo Choral Festival, the versatile chamber choir Enchiriadis, formed in 1985 by Dr Marion Doherty Hayden, has toured extensively, including a performance in Carnegie Hall in 2010, and has won numerous awards, earning it a reputation as one of the strongest mixed voice choirs in the country.

Sunday night’s Festival Folk sees the return of the fabulous Henry Girls from Inishowen who enthralled and excited us all with their short 30 minute introduction last year. On the back of some great reviews and national media coverage, the girls are coming back with their folk/roots band and those lovely close harmonies. We can’t wait to see them again! We are delighted also this year to welcome Eurovision Song Contest Winner and Songwriter, Charlie McGettigan who will be joined by Eamonn Daly, long term friend and founding member of their original seminal duo – Jargon! Back together for a ‘one-off’ you can expect old Jargon favourites as well as new material from Charlie. Also on the bill and opening the evening is We Banjo 3, with their fine mix of Appalachian, Bluegrass and Traditional music. A great week of music education workshops delivered by the highly regarded Martina Rynn and designed to introduce children to music for the first time or to improve their understanding of music theory and instrumentation. At the end of the workshop the group will perform a choral piece on Sunday at the family fun afternoon in the festival marquee. All for just 25 euro per child for the 4 workshops. The 4 day programme will cover: Vocal training, Aural training, Instruments of the orchestra, History of music, Learn to write music in an hour, A special performance at the end of the week. with Boris Hunka and Diane Daly sponsored by Dunnes Stores Custard Pie Theatre Company presents: Punch and Judy This show is a unique (Dublin) adaptation of ‘Punch and Judy’ A very naughty Mr. Punch is left with the task of minding the house while Judy gets busy with other important chores, Mr. Punch’s inability to take on the simplest of chores leads to hilarious consequences involving the Gardai! Lambert’s experience with comedy improvisation and stand-up only embellishes this 45 minutes of entertainment, bringing audience participation to a whole new level as he deals with individual comments from the audience with aplomb, ensuring no two shows will be the same with this puppetry favourite. A must see for all the family. Music in the Glen presents: Summer Serenades – ‘The Lark and the Toucan’ Irish Chamber Orchestra violinist Diane Daly and multi-instrumentalist Boris Hunka performing a family friendly selection of popular classics by composers including Bach, Kreisler, Astor Piazzolla and Duke Ellington. The concert includes short pieces of music from each country, and is structured by the story of an unlikely love between a gentle Irish Lark and a fiery Argentinian Toucan.
