SENSORY PLAZA 8 Project: MLA Studio 7, Studio Vestibular (2018) Role: Design concept.

The design seeks to amplify the sensory input of a given site by highlighting the stimuli of the 7 senses (sight, smell, taste, hearing, touch, vestibular, proprioception). It creates a theatre within the landscape that connects the subjects with the river, alternating between the roles of spectator and performer. This relationship is emphasized with different states of water that serve as a relieve for the urban heat island effect. And moreover, the water amplifies the sensory input of the site though different conditions.

02

URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT As the city faces the challenges of the UHI effect, the square provides a relieve due to its position close to the Yarra River. Water is the greatest heat absorbent. And the different stages of the water provide new relieves. As the water jets provide cooling most directly, the different vegetations provide freshness with transpiration and the water drop help alleviate the zone trough steam.

Summer cooling showers

Winter sun exposure

The site then provides relieve in the middle of the city, and help them relate even more to the natural elements and can change with the seasons.

SENSORY JOURNEY It also activates all the senses as the site responds to them: Sight: As it gives a view of the city with the sun behind it, where the movement of the trains help relax with their rutinary movements. Smell: the different smell of plants and event the river itself give freshness. Touch: As the different vegetation and surfaces interrupt the journey to ask for pause and connection. Vestibular: With the different levels, it asked us to be aware of our surroundings. Proprioception: The site also provides different routes in which it can be experienced while moving around the site elements.

REFRESHING PANAMA Project: MLA Thesis project “Refreshing Panama, Creating a new street typology for a humid tropical climate (2019) Role: Design concept, planting selection, site analysis and theoretical analysis. The project aims to present guidelines for the developers to improve the streetscapes for the general public through the variables of thermal comfort. Due to the rapid growth of the Panama City geared by economic profit, the Panamanians face the challenges of a modern city in a hot and humid climate where the developments only provide comfortable indoor spaces and the outdoors areas mainly consider the needs of the cars, even though the population that moves by personal car is less than 35%. The project views the site through 4 drivers: wind, shade, water and open spaces, all considered in different scales during three stages. Firstly, through the adaptation of existing built and natural conditions, such as the direction of the prevailing wind, existing water bodies, and the city grid. Then follows the addition of elements that increase the comfort of the street, creating a link of green spaces that includes the urban canopies both natural and artificial. As a result, the city gains an increase in the public realm for the community, where they can engage and enjoy the street life.

SITE ANALYSIS Over the years, the idea of an "indoor city" became a reality for the Panamanians. Most of the population was barely using the pubic spaces. As a consequence, these places were practically abandoned and left for lower social status citizens that could not afford a car. Since many of the following governments did not consider people's real needs, the sidewalks and public spaces started to crumble and the plans to repair them were not a priority. Most of the infrastructure works were about maintaining and upgrading the road systems, exclusively for cars use.

NATURAL COOLERS Considering the natural variables, the project proposes to view the site through 4 lenses that relate to the thermal comfort and the need of the city of space and heat mitigation. This focus areas are: the wind movement in the site, presence and absence of shadows areas, relation with existing water bodies, and how all of these give new uses and spaces in the public realm for the community.

NEW COOLING NETWORK The site has the presence of two low pressure zones, it has the district park, Omar Park at the north and the coastline of the Pacific Ocean in the south. The natural relationship of this zones is from north-south following the predominant wind. Following the prevailing winds the new network of low pressure areas seeks to maintain the wind flow at the street level. The project propose to increase the trees in the street and an opening of the existing water bodies to the public spaces. 11

SHADING ELEMENTS Due to its proximity to the equator line, the sun's trajectory does not vary much during the year staying between 70ยบ and 90ยบ perpendicular to the earth. This causes that at the times where the sun is higher there are no shadows on the streets that protect pedestrians. Since all element cast a shadow in different moments of the day the project plays with various scales of the shadow elements to ensure the protection of the pedestrian in the moments of the day when the sun is hardest.

COOLING STRUCTURES The independent shading structures should provide the same canopy diameter as trees, but their heights can vary depending on the location and quantity needed. These structures need to be permeable in their lower parts to allow the wind flow, and semi translucent in their canopy to allow natural light into the streets but block the rainwater. This structures can be located in squares, parks or avenues.

CRAZY PARK Project: Family Entertainment Centre, Altaplaza Mall, Panama City (Sept 2015 – Oct 2016) Development area: 3,177.00 m2 Role: Construction Manager responsible of: Contract Administration, Calendar Administration, Materials calculations and orders, personnel management, and quality control. It was a 2-level theme park construction project set as a cartoon-like jungle within a commercial plaza. Part of the responsibilities included the supervision and contract handling of technical services such as electricity, plumbing, air conditioning, security and data. To obtain the jungle atmosphere, it included ornamental details such as hanging elements simulating clouds, tree-like covering structures, 3M digital prints on the walls and various furniture. These elements were divided into 3 main contractors to ensure the project times where kept. The process followed strict security measures to ensure that the facilities meet the safety standards for children´s play. This included structural elements for game facilities, such as steel structures, soft play soft coverings and protecting meshes for the delimitation for areas. Some of the play areas depended on the arrival of certified personnel from international companies to install the structures. This required careful management of each phase of the project to ensure that each zone had the requirements for the scheduled installation periods.

COMPLETION WORKS The second level and front shops included stainless steel handrails and louvres.

Coordination of tailing works in exterior corridors of the plaza and stairs.

Paintings included EIF in exterior walls, decorative paint on hallway columns, and base coat for the interior of the shops.

26

INFOGRAPHICS The project intends to create a visual essay that will serve as a guideline for new mixed-use developments projects. It includes basic design principles with a community-conscious oriented approach to provide a strong base for the projects and obtain an adequate environment for the communities. Following the analysis of several case studies in Melbourne and the USA, the infographics speak in a language that can be understood not only by designers but also by the general public so the community can envision the possibilities for their future homes.

28

SKETCH + COLLAGE Through the visual essay, we intend to bring forward the different layers that make up the fabric of the site and what is the phenomenology of the place. Through collage, we bring a focus to the moss as the main subject to analyse and as we zoom in to understand how this micro vegetation works, its surrounding lose details but remains present as they condition the moss as well. While we inhabit a space, the more we look, the more we discover the relationship between the different elements and the closer we can see.
