“Love is the extremely difficult realization that something other than oneself is real.” When asked about his success, well-respected designer Milton Glaser showed that conviction within your own work has no meaning without the appreciation of other’s first. Artists and designers are notorious for overly confident, zealous personalities, which stem from their passionate divulgence of personal work and opinions. We are a competitive breed that endeavour to distinguish ourselves rather than contribute to the longevity of our society.

THE IDEA

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY “Integrity of purpose implies severe analysis of what the problem is; its meaning, what the possibilities for a range of solutions are: solutions which have to be sifted through to determine the most appropriate for the specific problem– not just the alternatives I may like, but one that answers all of the questions posed by the problem.” -Massimo Vignelli, Long Live Modernism!

EXPERIMENTATION “The contemporary interest in pushing typography to the boundaries of legibility is part of a broader cultural context – the post-modern condition. Challenging functionalism in typography has led to experimentation with the message rather than type as image, with recognition rather than reading.” -Michele-Anne Dauppe, Get the Message?

I am of the opinion that collaboration and a growing cycle of design are the most fundamental and essential sources to the evolution of design. Without continuous study of past, present, and experimental pathways, designers would not have the means of transforming and understanding their own work. As I begin my exploration into the realm of multidisciplinary design, I take into consideration a philosophical standpoint of Milton Glaser where acceptance that “deeply held beliefs of any kind prevent you [as a designer] from being open to experience.” Glaser makes evident that richness of understanding comes from deep, historical, philosophical ideas. The belief that firmly held ideological positions impedes our judgments in designing for the moment.

COMMUNICATION “Type is not neutral. The values and messages it communicates are available for appropriation–they are not fixed. Typography can legitimize or trivialize, confirm or reject: it has effect. Typography is powerful and typographers should wake up to their responsibilities; responsibility, not at the obvious level of aesthetics (cosy typography), but social responsibility.” -Michele-Anne Dauppe, Get the Message?

030.

Having a one style or method restricts designers from adapting their work to the specifics of design opportunities. Stemming from the belief that design is a continuous cycle, which incorporates collaboration and re-invention of past design aids designers in obscuring the separation between art and design. Design is not a stationary skill. It is an exponentially growing cycle that absorbs all types of visual foundations to inspire, form, and educate designers on transforming their work to benefit each plan of design.

Additionally, forward thinking and experimentation is the course to changing perception of the public view. Designer, Bruno Monguzzi conveyed during a Hallmark Symposium Lecture at The University of Kansas that the significance of design as a universal visual language that is one of the most identifiable media for the public. Visual communication should not be based on objectivity or subjectivity, rather appropriateness to one’s message. Graphic design is the process by which designers substitute a signifier to communicate their subject. “Good design,” Monguzzi noted, “is how good that substitution is.”

New design does not come from a change in style; instead it comes from new problems. The most difficult thing to learn is to disobey the limits. Design is a matter of intentions and new ways of expression can only add to the visual language. There is never one way to solve a problem in design. Unconventional methods for seemingly inconceivable results are the key to producing great design. A strong concept is one that has never been tested or used before. Designers must consider all forms of design history including professional practitioners, learned techniques, observable inspiration, and personal experience. Design is not simply an addition of aesthetic pleasure, but instead the incorporation of purpose driven decisions for unlimited solutions. Design should reflect the past, improve the present, and direct an unforeseeable future. Though it follows a circular path, design is an infinite measurement, expanding with the record of humanity. All in all, I can conclude that designers must learn rules in order to break them and examine all possible pathways, methods, concepts, and possibilities before taking the final road to their solution. However, when rules are defied and the path is chosen, design should not ignore intellect, but instead use it to deepen visual messages. Designers who ignore technicality solely for the purpose of beauty or aesthetics are being negligent to the power of typography, design, and the messages they can carry. 01.
