Discover biodiversity!

with Bob Holland
It’s been another action packed week at the Photo News office and as a result I have a few things to pass on to you. First up, motor racing fans will enjoy Jeff Death’s photos taken at last week’s Bathurst 1000. Jeff had special access and the results are spectacular. Check them out on pages 32 and 33. Next, the field days are coming up next week and we want to encourage as many people as possible, not just farmers, to go along and support this great annual event. Check our two page feature in this issue for more details but be assured there’ll be plenty there to interest town and country folk alike. Our Spring Shopping Spree is now in full swing and already there have been 20 weekly winners. It’s easy to enter and overall there will be 55 winners, you could be one of them. Check where to enter on page 45. Also, to accommodate the two latest digital stations we will introduce our new look TV guide from October 31. Talk about a smorgasbord of television! Our website is going great guns with the number of hits increasing every week. The coupon discounts and gallery sections are both worth checking out. Go to www.myphotonews.com.au and enjoy! Folk from Bathurst often ask us when we’re going to start a Bathurst Photo News. The answer is “we’re working on it” and to help with that process, we’re going to produce a couple of exclusive Bathurst Photo News editions over the next month or two. Any local business looking to advertise in Bathurst this side of Christmas should contact us for details. It’s going to be interesting and possibly lead to Bathurst having their very own and exclusive local edition of Photo News.
The Botanic Gardens will be thriving with educational and fun events this Sunday, October 17, as part of Biodiversity Discovery Day. 2010 is International Biodiversity Year which brings those from all over the world to celebrate the variety of life on earth. Orange will be doing its part to celebrate all living things this Sunday, from plants to animals, from bugs to birds! Not only that, but the day will be held to raise awareness for the importance of biodiversity in our environment and to show people the beauty that can be found in creatures on our planet. The day is being put on by the Orange Field Naturalists, with organiser and Charles Sturt University professor Cilla Kinross urging locals to help make sure no more animals are extinct in Australia. “We’ll be teaching people ways you can attract wildlife to your garden and farm,” Cilla told Photo News. All of the day’s activities will be educational as well as enjoyable, including games, a nature quiz, guided nature walks and hands on activities, bird and plant walks as well as a photography and art class. There will also be talks on how climate change will affect biodiversity and the status of biodiversity in the Central West. The entire day and all activities are free, although the art and photography classes may fill up so if you’re especially keen you can book your place in advance by emailing ckinross@csu.edu. au. It’s a full day family event and the activities are set to be fun for all ages! There will be food available to purchase as well as refreshments that can be enjoyed in the lovely spring weather. The first talks and walks begin at 8.30am and will finish around 4pm to 4.30pm so make sure you get there sometime during the day to experience local biodiversity!

Central West Photo News October 14-20, 2010
Moods and motivation by BoB Holland Here at Photo News we’re busier than we’ve ever been and it seems that more and more people are involved in promoting or staging one kind of event or another. The Field Days, Wine Week, The Orange Theatre Company’s Spelling Bee Production, the Country Fair, the Central West Disability Expo and a Cobb and Co. Lives On weekend are among many events currently being promoted. With so many things going on and so much to choose from, we should all be beside ourselves but are we? Sadly it seems, people at large are not supporting events the way they have in the past. I am aware of a number of recent events where support and patronage has fallen well short of expectations. On the world stage alone, interest in the Commonwealth Games has been incredibly disappointing. In some respects, this is really tragic because if people realised how much effort goes into staging events, the costs to do so and the huge risk of financial loss that is often involved, they might support things a bit more enthusiastically.
Things happen when people are motivated
PICTURE: CENTRAL WEST PHOTO NEWS/GRACE JOHNS
I have organised many functions over many years, big and small, and as each year goes by it’s getting harder and harder to predict or forecast outcomes. Today, among other things, people seem reluctant to commit to things before they have to and often an organiser has to wait until the last day or two to find out whether they have an acceptable outcome or not. It can be very, very stressful and especially if you’re a volunteer and stand the risk of being left holding the bag for any losses. Unless I miss my guess, we need something to kick start us again, back into a more normal pattern. Things happen when people are motivated and people will only get motivated when they feel good. If all we think about is a potential locust plague, why Tony Abbott didn’t visit our troops with Julia Gillard, whether interest rates are going to go up or not, how the Murray Darling water issue might affect food prices, how a carbon tax might affect energy prices and so on and so on, we will continue to feel lousy. Although important, these shouldn’t dominate our thoughts. Let’s instead encourage everyone, including our local media, to keep reminding us about things that will help make us feel good about our city, our nation and ourselves. If, as a city we can achieve this, the benefits will be immeasurable and ongoing on every front. Feel free to email or text me with anything that will uplift our readers. Email bob@cwpn.com.au or text 0422 396 717.

A special gift for Jayden
ORANGE COuNCil NEws Orange City Council has secured the NSW Volleyball State Cup which will be held at Sir Neville Howse Stadium on 12 and 13 March 2011. The event will attract approximately 20 teams involving 250 competitors and officials. Teams from throughout NSW including Sydney, Illawarra and Newcastle regions as well as teams from regional towns and cities throughout NSW are expected. This is the first time this event has been held in a regional centre in more than five years. It is estimated the direct spend into the local economy will be $200,000. Orange could only host this event because of the facilities provided at Sir Neville Howse Stadium.
By Chris Bennetts Jayden Skrtic’s first year of life has been very tumultuous, but thanks to a special gift from his father the future is brighter than ever. At four weeks of age Jayden was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, a rare disease of the liver that destroys the bile ducts. The causes of Biliary Atresia are not yet known and occurs approximately once in every 15,000 births worldwide. Jayden’s best chance at leading a normal life would come from receiving a liver transplant, something that his father Tom didn’t hesitate to do. The transplant took place in late August. Tom had a lobe of his liver removed in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, which was then hastily transported to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead to a waiting Jayden. The transplant was a complete success and Jayden is going from strength to strength. Tom is also recovering well. The Skrtic family has recently returned to Orange to resume a family life, although Jayden’s recovery still involves travelling to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead once a week for medical tests and checkups. To help with costs of everyday expenses including medical, recovery time, and travel amongst other things, a trivia and auction night will be held on the 30th of October, to raise money for Jayden and his family. Organisers of the fundraiser said that local businesses have been very supportive, donating goods and services to auction off on the night. Guest speaker on the night will be Vicki Jermyn who is the Transplant Coordinator at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Vicki will speak about the importance of organ and tissue donation. Table tickets for the Auction night have sold out, but you can still support the cause by purchasing raffle tickets to go into the draw for many great items, by calling Kylie on 0412 899 032.
A brave boy- Jayden after his transplant operation.

Organisers wish to thank major sponsors ABC North Daycare, Donate for life, Orange City Bowling Club and Angelo’s By The Green who will be supplying food on the night. For more information on Organ & tissue donation go to www. donatelife.gov.au

Roommate watch!
Australian renters and roommates may be too relaxed when it comes to home security with almost 30 per cent admitting to leaving the house with the door unlocked, new research from NRMA Insurance has revealed. The survey of 300 Australian shared rental households has revealed how hazardous some roommates can be: • 38 per cent have borrowed an item without asking; • 28 per cent have broken something and not told anyone; • 10 per cent have removed a smoke alarm battery and not replaced it; • 6 per cent have left home with the iron on; and • 4 per cent have headed out with cooking on the stove. Surveyed roommates also dobbed each other in for not pulling their weight financially (30 per cent), creating mess and not cleaning it up (58 per cent) and scoffing someone else’s food and drink (43 per cent).

RED LOCKS: 11-year-old Charlotte Cooper will shave her hair off tomorrow, October 15 and donate it to be made into wigs for people with Alopecia disease.
A unique gift By GRACE JOHNS
Kookaburras sit in the Paulownia tree
For most 11-year-old girls their hair is one of the most important things in the world – but tomorrow Charlotte Cooper will be shaving off her beautiful auburn red hair for those who aren’t lucky enough to have their own. This week from October 11 to October 16 is Alopecia Awareness Week. Alopecia is a highly unpredictable autoimmune skin disease resulting in loss of hair on the scalp and elsewhere on the body. The condition can change lives, especially the life of a young child. Charlotte will be shaving her head to donate to the Princess Charlotte Alopecia Foundation. This foundation was formed after another Charlotte – Charlotte Ollivier Adamson, a 10-year-old girl who has had Alopecia for two years now. Not only does Charlotte Adamson and Charlotte Cooper share names – but also they both share the same auburn red hair colour! The Princess Charlotte Alopecia Foundation raises awareness of Alopecia as well as money and hair for wigs for those with the condition. It also empowers those with Alopecia to not be ashamed of their condition, that they’re the same amazing people with or without hair. “I’ve always wanted to shave my hair for charity and the Princess Charlotte Alopecia Foundation sounded like a worthy cause, and not just because we share the same name and hair colour!” Charlotte Cooper told Photo News. If you want to know more about Alopecia or would like to donate money or your own hair to Alopecia sufferers, visit www.princesscharlottealopecia.com. What a brave act for Charlotte Cooper, well done!
Photo News photographer Grace Johns recently spotted this sight in her backyard near Rosewood. Grace has noticed two kookaburras in her yard for the past few weeks, but last weekend she saw that they had multiplied to four! The beautiful birds that seem to travel in pairs thoroughly enjoy a birdbath and don’t mind giving the cat a bit of a scare either!

ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION AWARENESS MONTH
A real life story
God’s expression of love
By GRACE JOHNS
By Karina Blanch One of the traditions in our family is making a big deal out of birthdays. Having a party to celebrate with friends is one aspect of having a birthday my kids most look forward to. They appreciate not just the event of the party, but the excitement leading up to it and the effort we put into making the party happen. The kids understand that making them feel special is an expression of our love for them. God showed us the enormity and extent of his love for us through his son Jesus. The Bible tells us that the creator God “made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant…and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!” (Philippians Chapter 2) This act of love is even more astounding to grasp as we consider Jesus did this not for people who liked him, but for those who were completely indifferent to him. He did this to restore our broken relationship with God. As we reflect on what happened on the cross 2000 years ago I hope that you see God’s expression of love for you.

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK
27 Kenna Street, Orange Ph 6362 8737
If you’ve been following Photo News this month, you would know that we are participating in beyondblue’s Anxiety and Depression Awareness Month as well as Mental Health Month. Last week we were contacted by a reader, Jessica* who told us she would like to tell the people of Orange her story about her experience with anxiety and depression. A very courageous act for Jessica, it shows that there are many people out there who have dealt with anxiety and depression and who want to give others help too. Not only that, but Jessica wants to tell others that you can come through on the other side of anxiety and depression – and the first step is to seek help and to talk to your friends and family. Jessica is in her early 30s, a university graduate who describes herself as quite a successful person who hasn’t had any particular ‘traumatic’ experiences in the past, but has always had pretty low self-esteem. In the past seven years, Jessica has not only experienced anxiety but has also had episodes of chronic depression. “I was diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder, when you worry about everything from the way people think of you to the littlest things in life like making a cup of coffee or driving a car,” Jessica told Photo News.
“When you have an anxiety disorder everything affects you” “When you have an anxiety disorder everything affects you. You think about every little thing you do and how it may affect others around you or how it could be harmful. You live in fear, your heart races every time something reminds you of an incident or a bad memory.” It was earlier this year that she sunk into a major state of depression – the third reoccurrence of it in her life, which surprised her as she thought she had recovered from previous episodes. “All of my family and friends seemed to think that I was okay – that I was just having a hard time getting over my last relationship. What they didn’t see was that I was choking inside. All I wanted to do was escape, I thought that no-one cared about me and what I wanted in life,” she said. “At my worst I stopped playing my regular sport, I found it hard to get out of bed in the morning, I thought people were judging me for everything I said and did, I was ‘ruminating’ – in other words going over and over the same topic. Every time I was alone I had a million bad thoughts go through my head that I couldn’t seem to control, to the point where I considered taking my life.” Jessica believes she was suffering from this depression for nearly two years when an old friend of hers realised that she wasn’t just ‘down’ and spoke to her. “He had seen me go through depression before and he said ‘I think it’s time for you to go and see your psychologist again, because I refuse to go to your funeral, you have too much to live for!’ this friend, I believe, saved my life!” Jessica went back to her psychologist but found it wasn’t helping like it always had before. One Thursday morning Jessica had a particularly bad episode after months of crying herself to sleep and waking up not wanting to get out of bed. She was taken to her GP, admitted to a private mental health clinic, and spent the next three weeks there under the supervision of a psychiatrist. “I always imagined a psychiatric facility being full of padded rooms and heaps of drugs, but I was so wrong. This place wasn’t like being in a hospital. In the clinic Jessica was taught how to be kind to herself, how to change her thoughts, how to steer herself in the right direction and how to control the terrible nightmares and poor sleep habits she had previously had. She also attended group sessions three times a day where she learnt about depression and anxiety, how she could overcome the effects of the disease, why she was prescribed medication, how to reduce the symptoms of the disease by changing lifestyle habits and how she could change the way she felt.
“I came out of the hospital in three weeks feeling like there was so much to live for,” Jessica said. And the help didn’t stop there – Jessica still sees her psychiatrist from hospital on a regular basis to discuss how she’s feeling. She also attends group sessions once a week called the ‘relapse prevention group’ where others share their experiences about what happened to them to give each other support.
“You don’t realise when you have depression that there are so many people out there who are feeling exactly the same as you.” “You don’t realise when you have depression that there are so many people out there who are feeling exactly the same as you. They’re just everyday people who you may work with, play sport with or they might even be family.” Jessica says that she doesn’t think she’s out of the woods yet but treatment has helped her dramatically and she feels she is on the way to recovery. One thing she is certain of is that she wants to get the message out there to others that you need to speak up and seek help from your friends, family or a mental health care practitioner – don’t let yourself be buried under the weight of your illness. “If you know someone that may have depression, or know someone who is asking for help, don’t ignore it. Depression should be treated like any other illness. “Speaking as someone who has let depression and anxiety take control of her life – help is out there – you just need to speak up and let someone know how you feel.” *name has been changed

Local musician Shorty Dwyer held a fundraising concert on the weekend to raise money for a friend who has been stricken with breast cancer. Friends, fans and family gathered at the Hotel Orange to watch Shorty perform songs from his CD ‘The Gift’, which he recorded especially to raise money for his friend. Shorty was happy with the number of people who turned out to lend a hand. “It’s been a great night; I can’t complain. We’ve got people who have travelled from Sydney, Wagga, Parkes and even Bogan Gate to be here tonight, so it’s great! Shorty sold copies ‘The Gift’ along with key rings, and pink balloons.
He also held auctions and raffles, with prizes including a signed Parramatta Eels guernsey, a Peter Brock limited edition helmet, and gym memberships to Integra gym. Other performers on the night were Tegan Nock, Rebecca Ricketts and Shorty’s sister Claire Dwyer. Photo News spoke to Shorty the next day, and he estimated they made $2500 on the night. “I’ve sold out of the first batch of ‘The Gift’, so I’m in the process of producing a second batch. You can still purchase copies of ‘The Gift’ by contacting Shorty through his website- www.myspace.com/shortydwyer

TOUCH FOOTBALL Touch Football initially began as a form of training for Rugby League. This game as compared to Rugby League, involves no tackling. Instead most injuries occur as a result of the constant changing of direction as the player avoids the opposition players. Some research suggests that touch football accounts for around 10% of all football injuries, with the knee and ankle being the most common site. COMMON INJURIES: • Knee and Ankle Injuries involve sprains, dislocations and fractures as a result of the changing of direction. • Hamstring injuries as a result of the sudden sprinting and change of direction.
• Hand injuries which include sprains, dislocations and fractures as a result of impact with the ball and other players. • Impact injuries from falls and collisions with other players. The most common injury in this category are shoulder injuries, where a fall on an outstretched arm can result in dislocations and rotator cuff injuries. PREVENTION • Maintain cardiovascular fitness during the off season. This may include aerobic classes which combines flexibility, coordination and the teaching of specific stretches. • Warm ups: should include a light jog, sustained stretches of the major muscle groups, particularly of the lower limb, and change of direction and pace work. • Cool downs are just as important with stretching an integral part of the cool down. • Regular Training and advice from a reputable coach to learn appropriate skills and techniques to meet the demands of touch football. Players should have good skills and techniques before playing competitively. Poor techniques place unnecessary strains on joints, muscle and ligaments. • Wear protective and appropriate equipment for touch football. Ideally wear shoes with rubber soles or moulded cleats to prevent slips and falls. Mouth guards are also worth investing in to protect your teeth. • Avoid playing when in pain or your muscles are fatigued. • Avoid overtraining Remember in the event of an injury: • Cease play immediately an injury occurs • Seek appropriate medical treatment • Treat soft tissue injuries initially with Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE).

By GRACE JOHNS You’ve probably noticed the paint work happening at the Centrepoint Arcade in Summer St. Painters have been climbing the three story building for a few weeks now, painting over its previous mint green with a goldish yellow and dark red combination – much like the Myer building is now. The refurbishment is being undertaken by Centrepoint Arcade owners Tony Slattery and Colin Tseris as well as Blowes Real Estate for the purpose of giving the building heritage colours to confirm it as one of Orange’s great buildings.

This promotional brochure was printed for a boxing program at CYMS Stadium on July 17, 1953. It was provided to Photo News by John Rudd, who is the last name on the feature list and was just 13 when he fought Bob Bennett. Boxing has a tremendous heritage in Orange with former Empire champion Pat Ford one of the stars, along with Bill Moeller and brothers Garry and Bobby Williams. Pat Ford, as Australian Lightweight Champion, gave an exhibition bout on the night of this program and not long afterwards, on August 28, won the Empire crown by beating England’s Frank Johnson over 15 rounds in Melbourne. The names featured in the left column were from Orange and the other boxers in the right column were from Lithgow, Mudgee and Wallerawang. CYMS Stadium was in the former Dalton’s Mill building on the eastern side of Peisley Street, opposite Wade Park. The building later became the home of the Egg Board and still stands today. Bill Moeller also became a Commonwealth champion in 1975 while the Williams brothers won Australian titles, also in 1975.

Celebrate everything about the country! By GRACE JOHNS The Orange Country Fair and Wool Expo is on again and this year the focus is on educating children about rural history! Of course, the fair will appeal to everyone young or old and will be a great family fun day out. There will be shearing and sheep dog demonstrations, an animal nursery, jumping castles, light horsemen and vintage machines! The Fair is all about education and fun, with organiser Kevin Isbester saying that those involved don’t just want to have rural history locked away in a museum. “We want to show the public how farmers and townspeople used to do things and the best way to do this is to undertake demonstrations on the day,” Kevin said.
Countdown to
The fair will also include vintage machines, antique cars and trucks as well as old engines that will be operating all day. It won’t just be historic items on display though, with the State Emergency Service, Army, Rural Fire Service and the NSW Police bringing along some of their equipment for the public to examine. “The day will be a low cost event for the entire family with lots of free activities available for every member of the family,” Kevin said. Other than fun learning experiences, children can also look forward to a jumping castle and face painting! The Orange Country Fair and Wool Expo will take place at the Orange Showground on Sunday, November 7.

1. For a kid-friendly version that looks ‘Christmassy’, I use chopped up red & green jelly lollies such as frogs, snakes, etc. instead of the mixed fruit. Best to get these from a bulk-bin if you can so you can “pick out” the preferred colours 2. For another alternative, use glace cherries instead of mixed fruit 3. Instead of the slice form, I spoon the mixture into individual, Christmas-themed patty-cake (muffin) papers. Not-so-messy fingers using this method! 4. For a healthier option, use skim milk powder

Eye Safety at Work Optometrist Leesa Jagers reminds us that injuries in the workplace are very common, with people injuring their eyes at work every day. Of the total amount of work-related injuries, many will cause temporary or permanent vision loss. The eye can be damaged by impact from flying objects, dust, chemicals, heat and radiation.
Protecting your eyes Leesa says different situations require different types of protective eyewear. The main types are safety glasses, safety goggles and face shields. Fogging and ill-fitting eyewear can put people off wearing the appropriate protection. Safety glasses may look like regular spectacles but the lenses are more durable and provide better protection against flying debris. They should also provide side protection. They can be made with scripted lens and function like your normal glasses for both distance and close work. The lens can also be tinted or have transition lens fitted where required. Remember to enquire with your Optometrist about protecting your eyes with safety eyewear and protect your vision.

Lynne’s full-on commitment to doing some good Lynne Lambell goes to work each day knowing that she is going to “do some good”. Practice Nurse/Practice Manager at The Wellness House on Bathurst Rd, she believes that this type of patient-centred care is the way of the 21st century. “Here we have some complementary as well as traditional medicine, we get some fantastic results,” she said. She said that the House — established by local Melinda King after the prolonged illness of her late husband exposed her to the shortcomings of the modern health system — is the first of its kind. “They definitely are the future, it’s never been tried before,” Lynne said. She should know, training and working for years in some of the most advanced and primitive elements of the NSW Health System. “I’m a registered nurse, I trained under ‘the old school’ at Sydney Hospital, we were the first ever to do kidney transplants,” she said proudly.
Charles Sturt University “later in life”, she says managing the House is a full-time job in itself. “I work with the day-to-day running of the House. I work with private practitioners to develop their business and also carry out frontline management. It’s about quality improvement. I work with the GP’s closely on this,” she said. She describes the clinical network meetings which involve psychologists, doctors, and acupuncturists discussing case studies across disciplines each month, as a unique feature of the practice. Recently helping to gain accreditation for The Wellness House, she said that diagnostic tools like the Canning Data Tool lets doctors and other practitioners set goals for better outcomes. “Where you’ve got an action plan, you can set yourself goals to improve patient care,” she said. The light ambience of the building includes cartoons,
“It’s a bright, friendly sort of place, that’s the atmosphere that we are aiming for, different from the usual set-up.” “I then did general nursing in a small country town, Coonamble, where I spent a lot of time working in the community, district nursing and schools,” she said. Lynne jumped at the chance to come to the Wellness House soon after it opened in March 2008. “This is something that I’m quite passionate about, delivering patients into patient-centered care… a lot of health is delivered in bulk, this is about delivering individual care on an individual basis,” she said. The House includes general practitioners, dentistry, acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy, psychology, reflexology, meditation, natural medicine, and occupational therapy. Lynne said that the combination of traditional and complementary health services provides a unique opportunity for a new type of medicine. ‘We can do some good. I love the fact we do good. I love the fact that people have a choice here,” she said. Having completed a Bachelor of Management from
artworks, paintings, and a coffee shop, and is a world away from the clinical, sterile environment of the modern health system. “It’s a bright, friendly sort of place, that’s the atmosphere that we are aiming for, different from the usual set-up.” She believes though that this more relaxed, human environment improves patient care and outcomes for those with a range of health issues. “Everything here is different, we’re really blessed with the clinicians we have and the high-quality standards that we have here,” she said. “We’re basically about providing choices, and there’s more demand for this than the medical fraternity would admit,” she said. She said that the commitment to the philosophy of the Wellness House by all involved, makes being its day-to-day manager a full-time occupation: “It’s definitely full-on,” she said.
LOVE YOUR WORK: Lynne Lambell loves her work: “This is something that I’m quite passionate about.”

Orange Jazz Club Inc Words by DONNA STEDMAN Pictures by HETHA GRIFFITHS
When I think of Jazz, I think of Louis Armstrong and saxophones, but I’ve now discovered that there is a lot more to jazz than just saxophones and Louis. In 1980 Orange’s first Jazz Club was formed, since then the club has had many transformations and venue changes. Last year the club was reformed by pianist Ray Vanderby and in May this year the Club moved to the Royal Hotel in Orange. The Ray Vanderby Quartet is the regular band every month, with Ray on piano and vocals, Dale Tuckey on sax, Ebbo Brown on drums and Henry Bialowas on bass. Guests will often join the band on stage including the amazing South African jazz singer Geoffrey Du Toit.
The club meets on the first Sunday of every month, from 2-5pm and everybody is welcome to come along. Annual membership is $20 per person when you decide you would like to be a part of this jazzy little club. The club is looking for new members to help build up the funds to pay for bigger bands to come and perform. Club secretary Hetha Griffiths says the club is a great avenue for young jazz performers to come and show their stuff, gain confidence and experience in performing.
Orange Jazz Club: Whatever your interest in jazz is, this a great club for you to dip your toe into. All enquiries are welcome to Hetha Griffiths on 0401 583 780 or you can go to their website at www.orangejazzclub.com

Wentworth, from rabbiting to championship course
SO GREEN: The course has rarely looked more beautiful than it does now after the recent cool, wet winter.
MAKE WENTY YOUR LOCAL: Looking out over the beautiful fairway of the 18th hole from the north-facing balcony of the clubhouse, Ian Starr says “Make Wenty your local”
Make Wentworth Golf Club your local. Affectionately called “Wenty” by its members, Wentworth is on about 65 beautiful rolling hectares at Ploughman’s Lane, Orange. Bar Manager Ian Starr has rarely seen the 18-hole, Par 70 course looking as beautiful as it does now after the recent wet, cool winter. “The course has dramatically improved. The fairways are as lush as I’ve ever seen them. Our water storage is full, for the first time in 13–14 years with water overflowing,” he said. Ian talks with pride on the establishment of the club by a hardy group of volunteers as
an offshoot of Duntry League in the mid-1960s. “Back in the original days, Duntry League became too busy, and a group of individuals decided to form a club. “It was a Crown Land Reserve, the course proper still is, though the Clubhouse and car park are owned by the Club,” he said. In the days before rideon mowers and back-hoes, the founding members put in months of blood, sweat and tears to make their dream a reality. “They first started building fairways and the members went out with buckets each weekend to pick up the sticks and stones off the course…
I used to go rabbiting here when I was a kid,” Ian said. “The fairway grass was originally transplanted from Duntry League, it’s a South African couch,” he said. A friendly club that welcomes new members, Wentworth includes stunning views from the clubhouse, regular competitions, a beautiful restaurant, social comps, and a fully-stocked Pro Shop. “Come along and have a game, enjoy the facilities. It’s a very undervalued club. It’s got a hell of a lot of facilities that are an asset,” Ian enthused. Ian believes in golf’s benefits for your health and as an antidote to the stresses of our
busy modern lives. “I’ve played in Canada and other countries. There are a lot of benefits offered by golf. It helps your health, it de-stresses, you can go anywhere and meet a whole different range of people. It’s very social,” he said. Looking out over the beautiful fairway of the 18th hole from the north-facing balcony of the clubhouse, Ian is proud of the vision and work of Club members to build a facility as good as any comparable course in Australia. “Our advertising tag is ‘Make Wenty your local’ and that’s how we like to think of the club,” Ian said.

WELCOME TO WENTWORTH: Established in 1965, Wentworth is a friendly club that welcomes new members.
WENTY RESTAURANT: Wentworth Gallery Restaurant Chefs Jared Dillon and Simon Andresen (Head Chef) with Manager Isabel Turner.
Restaurant with best view in Orange For Wentworth Gallery Restaurant Manager, Isabel Turner, coming to work is a pleasure. “Who has a view like this to come to work each day?” she said, looking out over the spectacular views of the course from the restaurant. Isabel believes that the restaurant being part of the Club allows for an emphasis on good food at competitive prices. “It’s a unique position for a caterer, we have fairly low expenditure because we are part of the Club,” she said. This situation has also al-
lowed her to build up a loyal clientele of regulars. “We have some lovely customers, some very nice regulars who we know very well,” she said. Professionally-qualified chefs Simon Andresen and Jared Dillon regularly update the menu which also changes with seasonal availabilities. “We change our menu twice a year, we’re going into our summer menu shortly,” Isabel explained. Open Tuesday to Sunday, a la carte meals range from top-quality seafood, chicken, steaks, lamb, and French
desserts to pizzas, pasta, and ice cream for the kids with a special Sunday brunch menu available. “We’ve got great food, great service, and great views,” she said, believing that the balcony overlooking the 18th hole is the restaurants’ greatest natural asset. “All areas are utilised, we try to use the whole of the restaurant for functions,” she said. The intimate nature of the clubhouse and restaurant allows for up to three separate functions to be catered for at the club at one time ranging
from birthday parties, work functions, to small wedding receptions. The restaurant is also currently hosting a Wine Week event for Orange. “At Christmas we can have two or three parties at the one time,” Bar Manager Ian Starr explained. “Our prices here are incredibly competitive, our facilities have never been fully utilised…in that sense it’s a very undervalued club,” he said.

CHALLENGING COURSE: Wentworth is a Par 70 course of 5,870 metres of gently undulating fairways.
True Championship course challenges players Wentworth is a true 18hole Championship course comparable to any in NSW. It comprises about 30-hectares of undulating land over 5870 metres of fairways and greens and is rated at Par 70. “It’s a long 70 but with a fairly forgiving rough,” Bar Manager Ian Starr said. “We’ve had the course assessed by a Championships Committee and it’s up there
with them,” he said. The course comprises four par threes, two par fives, and 12 par fours and is considered by experienced golfers to be an exacting, but not unforgiving course. “It’s very challenging but enjoyable,” Ian, a regular player himself, says. Although the course’s storage dam is currently to capacity, the course features
watered greens and tee boxes with some watering of the fairways depending on conditions. “The fairways are quite wide with a lot of left to right fall, so you’re alright as long as you hit them in the centre, but they do run away quite a bit if you miss,” Ian explained. The course is on a spectacular natural hill but with
the 18-holes following the slight undulation of the hill with few steep rises or falls back to the clubhouse. A feature of the course, still a Crown Reserve, is the abundant birdlife that makes the pristine environment on the edge of Orange their home. “The bird life here is unbelievable. More than golf from great membership deals For Wentworth Golf Club, membership has its privileges and Bar Manager Ian Starr believes that now is the time to take advantage of great membership offers at “Wenty”. “We’ve got some great specials now, pro rata membership rates, two for one deals, we welcome new members all the time,” Ian explained. Regarded as a public course, Wentworth currently has about 475 full-playing club members and about 400 social members. “We’re easy to join and reasonably priced.” Short-stay mine-workers in Orange are especially invited to take advantage of a new innovation, pro rata (as you go) membership for a few months. “They can take out fullplaying membership for five
months at the pro rata rate, but it’s amazing how many have hung around,” Ian laughs. The course is open seven days with full comps on Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays with a Dark Shark Social Nine-hole event. The Club also recently hosted the City of Orange Final and is the venue for the Central West District Golf Association Annual Championships. For those who like to enjoy the Club’s social facilities without the pressures of sinking nine-foot putts, the Club is also offering a two for one special. “ We ’ v e g o t S o c i a l Membership at two for $10 per year, basically, you buy one, get one free,” Ian said. Parrots, Cockatoos…We were donated some geese and they live up on the other side of the course,” Ian said. The Clubhouse features a beautiful balcony and decking overlooking the 18th hole where Club patrons can see players finishing up their rounds on the last hole. “It’s a really popular spot because of the outside area, it’s a real drawcard,” Ian said.
DARK SHARK: Andrew Egea has specials on all golf equipment and accessories at Wentworth Golf Club. also seen the annual highlypopular golf camps run by Club Pros Andrew Egea, Todd Brakenridge and Matt Barrett. “We have more than 50 juniors. Once a year we hold the Juniors Golf Camp and every Sunday morning we have a nine-holes junior comp,” Ian said. Yearly playing fees range from $45 for a junior member to $485 for a Full Member which allows members to play in all competitions and during social days. Concessional membership
includes for pensioners, weekday members, membership for 18–21 year olds, and Red Card Members. The Dark Shark Pro Shop stocks all the best golf brands from Titleist, Callaway and TaylorMade with all equipment, from clubs, balls, buggies, and accessories on special. “We’ve got a full-range from beginners through to experts, everything is on special, come in and see the team and make us an offer,” Club Pro Andrew Egea said.
Supporting golf’s next generation Wentworth is a golf club that puts the effort into helping the next generation of young golfers. As well as heavily-discounted membership for young members, the club also runs golf clinics for junior players. The annual Golf Camp that runs during the October School Holidays proves highly-popular with the next generation of Adam Scotts. At this event, junior players from throughout the Central West receive specialist tuition from Golf Club Professionals,
Andrew Egea, Todd Brakenridge, and Matt Barrett. “It’s been excellent, I’ve learnt so much,” participant Fred Palmer said. “I like it, I’m only starting to learn and it’s been good,” Dan Connors said. “It’s been good, it’s been lots of fun,” Matthew Eyles enthused. “It’s been really good to learn what to do and the right way to do it,” Cameron Thomas explained. “You get to learn how to position yourself, the right way to stand,” Oscar Savage said.

PSSA Softball State Titles
Picture and words contributed by Cathy Gutterson
Seven Orange and district primary school boys were selected in the Western region team to compete at the PSSA Softball state titles held in Tamworth last week. The team was a mix of experienced and beginner players from Orange, Blayney, Lithgow, Wellington and Mudgee. 11 year olds, Aiden Kelly and Thomas Zeylemaker continued their successful pitcher/catcher combination honed at the recent U12 state championships in Sydney. They were backed up in the field by other local boys Jordan Khattar, Toby Westcott, Ryan Moore, Bradlee Roberts and Matthew Reekes. Western beat traditional regional rivals Riverina and North West but couldn’t match the stronger Sydney zones. Thomas, Aiden and Jordan will all be in action for Orange at the upcoming U14 State Championships being held in Orange in November.
Cookie monsters! A massive thumbs up to Dulcie McLean who recently sent Photo News this DELICIOUS container of homemade biscuits, after our comment on the Photo News staff eating packets of biscuits so quickly. Dulcie accompanied the biscuits with a note saying, “To Bob and Jackie and all your bickie monsters. Just to let you know your splendid paper is much appreciated. It’s a tradition at the field days to host a guest nation and this year, the Committee is pleased to have Italy as their official Guest Nation. The Guest Nation concept gives other countries the opportunity to bring suppliers and innovators to Orange to show off and demonstrate agricultural products and ideas to Australian farmers. Over the years many beneficial relationships have resulted through this concept. Italy and Australia have enjoyed close relations, both from cultural and trade perspectives and this year’s event is sure to build on that. Locals and farmers alike are encouraged to come along and enjoy what our friends from Italy have to share with us, while also welcoming them to Orange.
If you thought the Australian National Field Days were only for people off the land, you could be forgiven for thinking that way but you’d be wrong. Sure, there’s lots for our farmers but in recent years, the field days have definitely become popular among townsfolk as well. The result of this now sees more and more exhibits and exhibitors who offer things for a more general audience. This year, the tradition continues
with more local shops and businesses participating with a range of great specials, new products, product demonstrations and more. The variety includes jewellery, handbags, cosmetics, skincare, homewares, health, toys, technology, antiques, craft, fashion, kids and adult clothing as well as heaps of delicious foods and wines to try including that ever popular fudge!
Local art lovers are in for a treat at the field days with paintings from the Orange Credit Union food, fibre and fun art competition on display in the James Hardie Theatrette. The winner of this exhibition will be announced at the official opening of the Field Days on Saturday, and the prize money will be excess of $2000! Packing Room and People’s Choice prizes will also be awarded. This ‘must see’ exhibition will run for the full three days and paintings will also be available for sale throughout the field days.

Each flight will do a flyover around the local area giving

The Plumber’s Crack As the weather starts to get warmer I wonder what the young men of high school age are going to do when it becomes too hot to wear their school jumper during the day? You see, (astonishingly) that trend to wear your school trousers, and all pants for that matter, slung so ridiculously low on your hips that your plumber’s crack is on display to the wide world – has not yet faded. I can’t believe it. By my count this is the fourth year of that trend, and it seems there’s no end in sight. Strangely though, the other trend of having your shirt un-tucked seems to be fading. Where does that leave all of those kids who still have the urge to be ‘low-slung’? They’ve got pants that are 6 inches too short if they are worn around the waist, but it’s too hot to wear a jumper, and leaving your shirt out is sooooo 2009. Aarrgghh! What a dilemma.
Kinross Kindergarten Kookaburra This week’s class has been busy learning about the letter ‘W’ with their teacher Mrs Key, and learning all about the supermarket in maths and science. Art classes have been a favourite of the children as they used candles and wax to draw images of big spider webs. PD Health has also been popular, learning all about being healthy, and discovering yummy healthy foods.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not commenting on the people inside trousers (well, they’re almost inside them) – I’m just commenting on the trend. Our undie-displaying teenager friends are polite, clever and really switched on. They’re going to look back at photos of themselves in ten years, with their gluteal cleft on show for all, and hopefully cringe. I guess that’s no different to those of us from the eighties, who combined a mullet and a flat-top hair style, thinking we were the coolest guy around. I’m sure for those of us too old to understand these trends, the urge to grab the offending trousers and just hike them up a bit is great. But don’t judge the book by its cover. In two years they’ll all be dressing differently, as the trend will be something else ridiculous, but underneath will still be the frightened, impressionable teenagers desperate to fit in. I know that our tech-savvy teens are extremely skilled at multi-tasking, but I still won’t talk to them if they come up to me with one ear-bud in and one ear-bud out. They know that until they give me their full attention, chat is a no-go zone. I’m looking forward to this trend disappearing, too. Maybe if we all let the locks grow for a few months, we could get the mullet reinstated as the new trend. That’d be brilliant, and go well with the Movember efforts that are planned to support men’s health. Wow – mullets and mo’s, the teenagers will be in awe of us – we could kill off the plumbers crack and ear-bud trends in a week or two! Paul Tierney is the Director of Development and a mathematics teacher at an Orange School. He also has a weekly radio segment on Thursday mornings with Neil Gill on 2GZ FM.

MORE LAUGHS A friend of mine was a philosophy major during his first semester in college. One day in a seminar class, they spent a great deal of time debating whether the glass was half full or half empty. After the class, my friend was feeling pretty good about himself and what he was learning at university, so when he went home, he tried to continue the discussion with his family. With maximum drama, he took a 12 ounce glass from the cupboard and poured in 6 ounces of water. Then took it into the dining room and placed it in the middle of the table. He proudly asked his family, “Can anyone tell me whether this glass is half full or half empty.” Without missing a beat, his grandmother replied, “Depends if you’re drinking or pouring.”

MORE LAUGHS Unable to attend the funeral after his father died, a son who lived far away called his brother and told him, “Do something nice for Dad and send me the bill.” Later, he got a bill for $200.00, which he paid. The next month, he got another bill for $200.00, which he also paid, figuring it was some incidental expense. Bills for $200.00 kept arriving every month, and finally the man called his brother again to find out what was going on. “Well,” said the other brother, “you said to do something nice for Dad. So I rented him a tuxedo.” *** A man had just arrived home after the successful implantation of a pacemaker. Reading through the literature, he was delighted to learn that the instrument carried a lifetime guarantee.

TWO MORE Grandpa was driving with his 9 year old granddaughter and beeped the horn by mistake. She turned and looked at him for an explanation. He said, “I did that by accident.” She replied, “I know that, Grandpa.” He replied, “How did you know?” She said, “Because you didn’t say, ‘Idiot!’ afterwards.” *** A grasshopper goes into a bar and hops on to a barstool to order a drink. The bartender says “You know, we have a drink named after you? The grasshopper replies, “Really! You have a drink named Eddie?”

Hey hey everyone, This week has been filled watching fellow Australians clean up at the Commonwealth Games. I must admit I wasn't too pumped for it at the beginning, but after watching fellow Australians excel at their chosen sports it makes me proud to be Australian. I think something that people forget is how competitive Australians are by nature and how good we are at sport regardless of our population. Plus nothing makes me happier than seeing a Pom get beat by an Aussie. Hopefully I can use Australia's dominate performance at these games as inspiration as I take on the pros at the World Series Of Bowling. I'll be heading to the States at the end of the week for a few coaching clinics and then it's time to bring my game face and win a few titles of my own. I hope bowling will some day become both a Commonwealth Games & Olympic Games sport and then maybe I could bring home a gold for Australia. Be good - Cheers Jason
