“I used to watch my brother play basketball. It looked fun, so I joined a team”. Olivia Doble has been playing basketball for only two years but her strong performance on the court has seen this young star selected to represent the NSW PSSA State Basketball side.

This team will compete at the School Sports Australia Championships held in Victoria this August.

Olivia has also been selected for the National Jamboree in Albury, involving young players from nationwide and New Zealand as well as the Country Basketball Associations’ All Star Camp on the Central Coast in September.

Playing with her friends for the local Under 14 Womens Goldminers still remains one of Olivia’s favourite games. Her success is supported by her coaches Amanda Cheers and Kieran Purvis, and of course many thanks go to her Mum! You’ll find more community stories in this month’s Bathurst Extra…

FROM THE EDITOR WITH BOB HOLLAND Hi friends This is the third issue of our PhotoNews Bathurst Extra but it’s possible you’re seeing it for the first time. If that’s the case I hope you enjoy what we have put together for you.

It’s interesting when you launch a new publication like this into a community and especially one that’s distributed through letterboxes. On that note, I was in Bathurst talking to a few people last week and among the 15 or so people I spoke to, most had seen an earlier issue of our paper and the comments from those who had were very favourable. A couple of these people however, said that if Bathurst Extra was put in their letterbox, chances are it was among other “junk mail” and taken straight from the letterbox and placed straight in the bin. So called junk mail is like that isn’t it? - you either love it or hate.

For those who for one reason or another miss getting their copy each month, we place additional copies at the Bathurst Information and Neighbourhood Centre for people to pick up.

Previously we left them at the Visitor Information Centre, but the folks there suggested the Neighbourhood Centre may be a better location and we’ve taken their advice. While on that, a few people in Bathurst also like to see our Orange version of PhotoNews so we leave several copies each week in a stand we’ve placed at Aldi in Bathurst. If all else fails, both our Orange and Bathurst issues are available to read in full on our website www.myphotonews.com.au.

THE Combined Residences Association is holding their second Mr CSU competition following the success of last year’s event.

And though it’s a fun-filled night for all students, the staff on the judging panel get a few giggles out of it too.

“I like Mr CSU because I get to see a side of the students I wouldn’t normally get to see,” laughed finance staff member Lorraine Covington.

As well as being a social event for the residential community of CSU, the event aims to raise money for the Combined

Residences Association, who put money towards funding upgrades for on campus accommodation facilities and support various community events that involve CSU students such as Relay for Life.

It is encouraged that students dress in their residence colours to support their representatives- and it does get competitive!

One first year and one returning student from each Towers, John Oxley Village, Chifley Halls and Diggings are chosen to strut their stuff while their peers get behind them, making support pages on Facebook, posters to hang around

DISARMED

A lawyer was getting out of his BMW when suddenly a car came along and hit the door, completely ripping it off.

When the police arrived at the scene, the lawyer was complaining bitterly about the damage to his precious BMW. “Officer, look what they’ve done to my Beemer!” he whined.

“You lawyers make me sick!” replied the disgusted officer. “You’re so worried about your BMW, that you didn’t even notice that your left arm was ripped off!”

“Oh no!” replied the lawyer, finally noticing the bloody left shoulder where his arm once was.

“I’ve lost my Rolex!”

“It’s a great event that brings the whole university together without the pressure to drink. Everyone has fun and we’re giving back to CSU at the same time,” said CRA vice president Ellie Hurst.

And this year the Bathurst business community is getting involved too by generously donating a number of prizes for the raffle which is drawn on the night. The CRA would like to thank Surf, Skate and Street, Duncan’s Bar and Grill, Sportsman’s Warehouse, D2F, Ellie’s Cafe, Radio 2BS, Annie’s Ice Cream, Gorgeousness and Bobbie McGee’s.

The line up announcement for the CRA’s Cinderella Ball will also take place during the interval. Mr CSU tickets are $5 at the door and will take place in Rafters Bar on Tuesday August 7 from 7pm.

Odour seeking technology

BY BOB HOLLAND In my other life away from being a newspaper publisher, I am essentially a marketing consultant and as such I have a fascination with some of the outlandish claims that are made in advertising.

One such claim in recent years is the way the word technology is used to describe a products attributes is, in some cases, laughable. My all time favourite was Mortein’s claim that one of their insect sprays had insect seeking technology. The notion that an insect spray, when sprayed from a can, would go chasing insects is absurd and I can’t for the life of me understand how any regulatory body could accept such a claim as credible.

There has been a string of so called “technology” claims and I always have a chuckle whenever I hear the term used in an ad, but just when I thought this phase had passed they’ve come up with another one that again makes me scratch my head.

Would you believe that there’s now an air freshener being advertised that has ‘odour seeking technology’? The mind boggles again.

Think about it, if it was true.

However, Fred Hollows was a passionate ophthalmologist who became known for his work helping restore the eyesight of countless thousands in developing countries. He also significantly improved indigenous health here in Australia, for me he was remarkable.

What do you love about working as a reporter at WIN Television? Being a news journalist is very exciting. You travel, meet new people, see incredible things and every

You would no longer have to keep a can of air freshener on the shelf or floor in the loo.

Cleaning would be easier because when you dusted or mopped the toilet, you wouldn’t have to dust or mop around another can nor would an ugly can be spoiling the decor or look of your loo. You could simply keep the can where you keep other cleaning materials and then when an odour needs attention you just pull it out of the cupboard, give a spray or two without moving and then you can rest in the knowledge that the spray will go here, there and everywhere until it seeks out the rogue odour and deals with it.

How simple is that?

For those who are laughing about now, I challenge you...who’s the biggest fool - me or the advertiser? If this product really has odour seeking technology is not my assessment of how to use it reasonable?

Anyway, enough of this silly rot. If you believe the advertising, buy the product, but I strongly suggest that you don’t assume the spray will go from here to any specific there where a sneaky odour may be lurking.

CSU Students make a difference in Bolivia IN just 14 days, ten students from Charles Sturt University have experienced the trip of a lifetime that has changed not only their lives, but the lives of those on the other side of the world.

Lecturer from CSU’s School of Communication and Creative Industries, Daniel Aubin, has travelled with a group of volunteer second and third year theatre/ media students to La Paz, Bolivia to motivate and empower disadvantaged young people through creativity.

Organised by the faculty, along with CSU Global and international company Creative Corners, Daniel and his students have had the opportunity to work with theatre Company Teatro Trono.

The company was founded by Ivan Nogales in 1989 and has now grown into a centre for arts and culture.

“Bolivia was an amazing experience; culturally and artistically stimulating, fun, exciting and life changing,” told Anna May Evans, second year student.

Monique Julian, a CSU theatre/ media graduate from 20 years ago, put forward the idea having toured and volunteered all over Latin

America.

The task was to create non-verbal, physical theatre designed to give hope to, and empower all involved.

And it seems Daniel and his students did exactly that. After ten days of rehearsal, they presented a new 60 minute physical theatre and circus work titled, Igual Pero Diferente or Same but Different to an audience of 120.

“Working at the orphanage with these amazing young children demonstrated and created positive relationships.

Work like this introduces new creative possibilities for their future - and some said they would like to attend university,” said Daniel.

But Bolivian students aren’t the only ones benefitting from the trip.

Daniel Aubin insists the project was life changing for the CSU students, as well as himself.

“It is important for future leaders, artists and communicators to get an international perspective. Many of our students are interested in returning to Bolivia to continue working with Creative Corners and Teatro Trono after they graduate.

Hopeful this can become an annual project for CSU students on the back of this success.”

CLEVER KID A business man was driving down a country road when he spotted a little boy that had a lemonade stand.

It was quite hot outside, and he was very thirsty. So, he decided to stop.

Once he got up to the little boy’s lemonade stand he noticed a sign that said “All you can drink for 10 cents,” and a single, very small glass.

Although the business man was dismayed at the size of the really small glass, he decided that since it was only 10 cents for all you can drink, he would just get several refills on the spot.

He gave the little boy a dime, and drank down the whole glass with one swallow. Then he handed the little glass back to the little boy and said, “fill ‘er up.”

The little boy replied, “Sure thing sir, that’ll be 10 cents.”

In protest, the business man said, “But your sign says all you can drink for a dime.”

“You’re right,” the little boy replied. “That’s all you can drink for a dime.”

Smashing Holiday Workshops Pictured here are the enthusiastic students on the first day of the film workshops. ...and the camera is rolling!

amy whitfeld THE Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre was buzzing these school holidays with local students participating in film, rhythm and beatboxing, aerial circus and acrobatics workshops.

Smashed Arts hosted the workshops as part of an initiative by Bathurst Regional Council to provide alternative holiday entertainment.

At the beginning of this year, the Federal Government awarded funding to Bathurst Regional Council to help combat binge drinking. “The workshops are great,� says Jordan Lane who heard about the film activities online and travelled over from Blayney.

Students have learnt new skills, and best of all, have had a smashing time!

There will be more from Smashed Arts in the future.

I have a friend who is a very nervous flyer. During a recent trip he took from California to Indiana, it didn’t help that his connecting flight from Denver was delayed twice because of mechanical problems.

Then, after he was aloft, he noticed the cabin lights were flickering. Losing his peace of mind, he decided to mention this to a flight attendant.

“I’ll take care of it,” she said. Moments later the lights went out. Clearly she had solved the problem by turning off all the lights.

A passenger across the aisle who had been watching my friend leaned over and said, “Whatever you do, please don’t ask about the engines.”

Impersonator Max Pellicano brings back the legend of the 50s, 60s and 70s with his uncanny resemblance to the King’s looks, moves and voice. ‘Elvis to the Max’ has been touring successfully for over two decades, amazing tens of thousands of audience members.

Critics have called Pellicano’s show ‘Elvis resurrected’, with the costumes worn as close to the originals as possible- Elvis’ tailor Bill Bellow replicated them for the show. The back page 32 photo of the ‘The big paper plane’ stirred a number of recollections. The following may interest you and others.

Myself and thousands of others witnessed many similar attempts at flight in Canberra.

The Birdman series run in Canberra around the 1980s saw hundreds of failed attempts to fly 50 metres - until Bathurst’s Colin and George Reekie conquered. They repeated the feat in successive years until the promoters pulled out. It had become obvious that the prize would go to Colin and George whenever they showed up. Their success is a story of dogged persistence, technical excellence and years of R&D. Nowadays Colin still lives in Bathurst with his wife Fudeiko. Their son George who piloted aircraft now lives in America.

I have recently had delivered your new magazine and would like to say how much I enjoyed it. It was refreshing - a good variety of information and news articles. Please keep up with the jokes and funny stories - I loved them. I took the paper to a housebound friend who hadn’t received one and we had a lovely time reading it. The Art Scene Winter School By amy whitfeld TWICE a year the Mitchell School of Arts brings The Art Scene to Bathurst. The summer school is held in January and winter school in July at Charles Sturt University.

Over twenty-five art workshops are offered across all skill levels.

Attendees this winter school have travelled from all across Australia.

Lucy and Barry McCann are in their twelfth year with The Art Scene and first attended the art school as students where they were asked to return as tutors. Travelling down from Armidale each year, Lucy says it gives her goosebumps to see the reactions from students as their final work goes on display. The Bathurst Extra was given a sneak peek into the exhibit as it was being set-up at the finale of the winter school.

Tell us a little bit about yourself Came to Bathurst to study print journalism, fell in love, went away, travelled, came back and settled here. For the past 8 years I’ve been running my own graphic design business from home, Red Moon Creative.

How long have you been a photographer?

Ever since university days but since I set up Red Moon I’ve started taking it more seriously.

How would you describe your style?

Colour is at the heart of everything I do whether it’s painting or photography. That’s what draws my eye initially. Colour and texture.

What is the story behind destination: here&now?

Initially it was to try and get out and about and away from the computer. That’s kind of backfired because I’m spending more time

than ever at a screen. Ultimately though it’s about trying to feel a bit more connected with my community and have a place where I can pull together all the things I love doing: storytelling, copywriting, design, drawing, painting, photography and travel. One day, I’d like to take it travelling again.

What type of cameras do you shoot with?

A Canon 400D or iphone.

What do you love most about running your blog?

I love it when a post touches people and starts a conversation.

How do you keep yourself motivated and your photography fresh?

Coming up with ideas is what I’ve done all my life. It’s just what I do. Photography-wise I’m setting myself little changes to get out and see and share things on my doorstep in a fresh way.

What has been your most memorable assignment and why?

Not an assignment, but travelling with the kids overseas in 2007. It was at the height of an anti-Muslim period in the Australian media. We had the most beautiful experiences in Morocco and Turkey, both Muslim countries. The kids were both in tears when we were flying out of Marrakech. It just reminded us that people are people … and it reignited the wanderlust.

These aren’t the best photos I’ve ever taken but they sum up what I’m about. Our son’s first 24 hours in Marrakesh (he was 10) were a real culture shock and he was very much out of his comfort zone. He and Steve (my husband) pulled out a little rugby ball and were mucking around in the alley. Next thing, all the local kids were in on it and the ice was broken. It was a lovely moment.

The picture of Steve riding an Arab stallion along the beach in Morocco just makes me smile. No-one I know has a better sense of fun than my husband. Only he, would stumble across a stallion in full regalia on an isolated beach and turn it into a scene from Lawrence of Arabia.

And the recent shot of Abercrombie House is just about looking at our here and now and appreciating everything we have through fresh eyes.

Swarfgrinder plays for 100 Children of Hope

By LeiLANi VAkAAHi SWARFGRINDER may not be a household name yet, but the local band is about to release their first album with fingers crossed people will take a liking to their original heavy-rock tracks.

However, Swarfgrinder aren’t in it for the money. Rather than using the launch of their album to make money, the five person band is holding a charity event at Bathurst Christian Life Centre on August 4 to release ‘Darkest Hour’. Matt, Dave, Andy, Mark and Carmen have decided to support the charity 100 Children of Hope in order to combine their passion for music with their desire to help out those in need.

“We wanted to donate money and I thought this was a worthwhile charity,” said guitarist Andy. “We’re going to put one dollar towards the

charity from every copy of our CD sold”.

100 Children of Hope is a not for profit organisation that exists to restore hope and justice to the people of Rwanda. This particular project is part of the Revival Palace Project that Bathurst Christian Life Centre developed through Hope Rwanda.

Swarfgrinder came together in early 2010 and has played a number of local gigs, including Iron Fest 2012, and are hoping to continue to play live in the Bathurst region.

Swarfgrinder’s album ‘Darkest Hour’ will be officially launched at 6.30pm on August 4 at Bathurst Christian Life Centre, 200 Gilmore Street, Trinity Heights. Tickets are available at the door for $5 or $10 per family with all proceeds going to the 100 Children of Hope charity. Further information can be obtained from Andrew on 0421 855 644.

Trusting in Jesus?

By Mark Sutton The other day I heard about a mother struggling with her faith in Christ because her young son has a terminal illness. It’s a terrible situation, made all the worse, because her family tells her that if God lets this happen, then she is mad to trust him.

But the apostle of Jesus, Peter, would disagree. In a letter he wrote to Christian friends, Peter told them that even though they may well have to suffer in all sorts of ways, if they simply trust in Jesus, he will protect them (1 Peter 1.3-6).

But how is he protecting them if they suffer? Peter’s answer is that God will give all who trust Jesus an ‘inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.’ In comparison to suffering in this world, which may be awful, those who trust Jesus can look forward to eternity with him, where there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.

State’s oldest remaining gold village

By JOHN MILLER SOFALA claims to be the oldest remaining gold village in NSW and a visit to the village, north of Bathurst, today reveals why this is a valid claim. The feeling of history is clearly evident from the narrow streets, to the old wooden buildings perched alongside the Turon River to which the settlement owes so much.

It was on the banks of the Turon in mid-1851 that gold was first discovered, bringing thousands of prospectors to the area. The find took place weeks after the first gold rush to nearby Ophir, with many diggers making their way to the Turon from Ophir and others diverted from Bathurst before they had even reached the first field.

Goldfields, which was soon named Sofala after a town in Africa of the same name that had served as a trading post for gold.

By the first week of July there were eight shops serving the miners, who tended to move along the Turon as there were new finds. By the end of the year a township had been surveyed and a number of more permanent wooden buildings constructed. In 1851

it was estimated that 152,000 ounces of gold was produced on the Turon.

The introduction of reef mining, shafts and sluicing in subsequent years saw gold continue to play an important role in the area and this continued until the early 1900s. Since then there have been intermittent bursts of mining activity along the Turon while explorers are still active.

Lovick & Mullins Wedding Jess Lovick and Steven Mullins were married on the 11th of February in a beautiful ceremony at St Joseph’s church. This was followed by a fabulous reception at Mitchell Park, where guests enjoyed canapés and local wines whilst overlooking the picturesque Lake Canobolas region.

Chicken and Bacon Roll

Chicken & Sweet Corn Soup

Serves eight – Prep 25 mins Cook: 1 hour, 15 mins Ingredients: 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion finely chopped 6 slices white bread, crusts removed, cut into 2cm dice 200g brie, chopped 4 sprigs thyme, leaves only Salt and pepper, to taste 6 long rashers bacon (375) rind removed 6 large chicken breast fillets (2kg), butterflied 275 jar whole cranberry sauce 1 tablespoon water Roast pumpkin, sugar snap peas, snow peas and green pears, to serve.

1. Heat oil in a medium frying pan. Add onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until soft. Transfer to a large bowl. Cool slightly.

Add bread cubes, Brie and

thyme. Season with salt and pepper.

2. Place two sheets of 60cm long baking paper side-by-side, overlapping by 10cm, on a bench.

Lay bacon rashers, slightly overlapping, to form a rectangle on the baking paper.

Arrange butterflied chicken fillers to cover bacon, slightly overlapping, making sure there are no gaps in between fillets.

Spread ½ cup of cranberry sauce over chicken.

3. Press bread mixture evenly over chicken. Using baking paper as a guide, roll up firmly so bacon wraps around the

chicken. Tuck baking paper ends firmly underneath.

Transfer to a roasting pan.

4. Cook in a moderate oven (180c) for 1¼ hours, or until chicken is cooked through.

Stand for 15 minutes. Cut along top of baking paper to remove chicken roll. Heat remaining cranberry sauce with water in a small saucepan, stirring until hot.

5. Lift roll onto a chopping board. Cut into slices and arrange on a serving platter.

Drizzle with cranberry sauce.

Serve with roast pumpkin, sugar snap peas, snow peas and green peas.

Ingredients: 8 chicken drumsticks (skin removed) 1-2 Cups of Water 1 Onion ½ bunch spring onions 2 chicken stock cups 1 tsp soy sauce 440g Can Creamed corn 1. Place water & chicken in saucepan.

2. Add sliced onion and simmer for 30mins.

3. Strain liquid into bowl.

4. Chop chicken and liquid to saucepan, add spring onions and corn and stir.

5. Add stock cubes and soy sauce stir till boiling.

Adjust seasoning and serve with crusty bread.

MAGNIFICENTwHEELS SCHOOL’S IN WITH PAUL TIERNEY

The ageing body I turned 46 a couple of weeks ago, and it’s getting harder and harder to act like a teenager in this ageing body At the time you are reading this column, I plan to be zooming down the slopes in the snowy mountains. I am fortunate enough to be one of the staff members who takes a group of students from my place of work away to the snow fields on a holiday trip. I’ve been on quite a few of these trips in my time (as well as overseas rugby and cultural journeys, so I am pretty lucky), and interacting with students in another different situation gives further insight into how young people tick.

For the past few years, I’ve worked very hard to stay fit with regular visits to the gym, jogging the 4km return journey into Millthorpe about 4 times a week, and giving up chocolate biscuits, and no beer on weeknights. But I got the flu about 2 months ago (yep—those flu injections work, I got it!), and my regime went right out the window. I ‘volunteered’ to run a 100m leg of a charity relay at school last month—so I went along to a special session our athletics coach runs on Monday after school for the kids called ‘speed for sport’ to try and get my running mojo back. Oh dear—it took me four days to recover from the arduous session! While it all turned out OK for our team in the relay, from that moment on I have been terrified thinking about what a week on the snow will do to me. It’s been 2 years since I’ve skied, and I’m really worried about how my body is going to cope with all of the stresses it will be put under for 5 days of ripping around in the powder. The hardest part is trying to keep up with the students you end up skiing with— they are really flexible, they feel no pain, they have absolutely no fear, and when they stack it they jump back up like they were getting off the couch.

Day three is going to be the worst. The hurts from day 1 don’t really hit you on day 2, they seem to store themselves up and join forces with the day 2 aches and pains, and this makes the agony of getting out of bed on day 3 increase exponentially. At that time, the age barrier between kids and adults goes from 30 years to about 80. Having the skill to bounce back, and pretend in front of the younger ones that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the muscles that are screaming out ‘no more’ is something I’ve become quite good at since reaching the 4-oh in 2006. It’s the first-timers that bug me the most. I didn’t start skiing until I was in my 20’s, but these kids pick up almost all of the finer points in just a couple of 2 hour lessons. They’ll be on t-bars and ‘the funnel web’ run in no time at all. You can’t say no when the kids say, “come and ski in the bowl with us”—it’s flattering that they don’t mind hanging around with the oldies, but crikey, I think I might need a stunt-double to get through the week this year.

The car has had little work done to it during the time Helen has owned it; being kept in good, but ‘useable’ condition so that it may always be driven and enjoyed, and not just shown.
