Another week has flown past and we are now only about seven weeks away from Christmas! Shops are starting to fill up with their Christmas stock and those familiar songs are starting up. Hopefully it lifts everyone’s spirits!

As the festive season draws closer, more and more parties are starting up. This Saturday is the Neville Country Show which is usually a great family day out. There will also be a Ute round up, which is bound to be an impressive one! Gates open at the Neville showground from 9am with tickets $5 for an adult, $2.50 for a child 16yrs and under.

Judges Cr Monica Morse, Lisa Mexey from Breast Screen, Janelle Matus from the Bathurst City Centre, Chris Wade from Mitre 10 and Lucy Brennan from 2BS had a tough time choosing the winners out of a huge number of stunningly decorated bras.

“We have had some stunning entries!” Lisa Maxey of BreastScreen NSW says, “I am amazed at how clever the entries are.”

Some of the winners present were Rachel Hardy, Amanda O’Brien and Sharron Carter who won some fabulous prizes including gift baskets, vouchers and flowers all donated by local businesses.

“I have been delighted with the support and teamwork amongst the community within Bathurst.” Lisa said.

“Hopefully we can build on this to increase the number of women in Bathurst coming to BreastScreen for their screening.”

The competition, run by BreastScreen and Medicare Local set out to raise awareness about regular screening for women in the Bathurst region. It set out to capture the community’s attention and that it did with a clothesline set up displaying the bras in the Bathurst City Centre a frequent spectacle for many shoppers.

With only 50% of women in the NSW area accessing the free program it’s important to spread the word as early detection is the best way to decrease the number of breast cancer patients.

All women over 40 are encouraged to go along on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month; October drew to a close, so did BreastScreen’s bra decorating competition with the judging taking place in the Bathurst City Centre on October28th.

Numbers game for local clinic DAVID DIXON Bathurst’s Panorama Clinic has been given some respite from suggestions that their seven-day a week status was in danger from Health Department cuts.

While increasing mental health funding has become a major priority; the local clinic fears it could become a victim of funding cuts.

However, the NSW Health Department has said that the clinic will remain open seven days a week; though there are suggestions that this is dependent on increasing occupancy levels.

A recent meeting between Health Department officials and clinic staff recently heard that the Bathurst Base Hospital inpatient clinic was being given six weeks to increase occupancy levels with the matter to be

subsequently reviewed.

Panorama Clinic is unique in that it is a voluntary unit providing patients with an environment equivalent to that usually only found in private psychiatric clinics.

The issue of the clinic’s seven day per week status has raised the issue of mental health in the local community.

A Mental Health Action Group has been formed so that patients and their carers can have a voice by writing to info@animaclinica.com.au or by following “Anima Clinica’s” Facebook page.

The community is also being urged to write to local politicians and the health bureaucracy including Bathurst MP Paul Toole, the Minister for Health Kevin Humphries and CEO of the Western NSW Local Health District Scott McLachlan to voice their concerns for the cuts.

Don’t blame Electrolux It’s been a sad time for Orange following the announcement their local Electrolux plant is to close leaving over 500 locals out of work. Bathurst also has its own problems with the Simplot situation.

In the case of Electrolux, It doesn’t matter how you paint it, this is bad news for not just the workers but the whole Orange community.

So far however, most of the anger has been levelled at Electrolux simply for making a perfectly logical and reasonable business decision, given the circumstances.

Our local pollies and local union representatives have come out crying foul and that’s understandable because that’s their jobs. It’s also understandable that news services have reported this event as if the world is coming to an end, because that’s what they do too.

It’s also not surprising that given the mountain of one sided publicity that’s been reported, most people probably feel Electrolux has done the wrong thing as well.

In my view that’s all crap!

What’s happening at Electrolux is just a symptom of a far greater problem, one that Australia has not yet come to grips with – greed!

Whether we want to admit it or not, over the years we’ve all been brainwashed into believing that gathering wealth and gaining prosperity is what life is all about and that the most important person in the world is me.

Put simply, we’ve all been conditioned to think that we should always get more for our money and labour irrespective of where that leaves the person on the other end.

We can toss what’s happening at Electrolux around as much as we like, but at the end of the day, greed is at the heart of the problem and greed will in all likelihood see more businesses follow Electrolux off shore, or simply close down.

The greed I’m referring to, we’re all guilty of. Basically, if you expect to pay the lowest price for anything you buy, you’re causing the problem that Electrolux and so many other businesses now face. You’re the greedy one - the one who complains about our car industry pulling out after buying a cheap imported car, the one who screams about our farmers not getting a fair go while you buy imported produce, the one who sniggers when a local retailer closes down while you buy products they sell from overseas.

Customers today expect to buy their groceries cheap, their clothes cheap, their cars cheap, their refrigerators cheap and so on. To facilitate this, manufacturers are being forced to produce their products cheaper than ever and therefore, are forced to cut costs in every area of their business. Part of this process sees them having to source materials and labour at the cheapest possible cost and we all know the cheapest labour and material costs for almost everything is found overseas.

It’s hypocritical to blame Electrolux for wanting to produce their products cheaper while we’re all just as hell bent on building our own personal wealth and prosperity.

More money for our “future” Children are our future, as the saying goes, with a little more money locally going to our “future” following a new funding model for the preschool sector.

Big winner in the new funding model is Elizabeth Chifley centre at Bathurst which will, receive an extra $85,689.

Based on enrolments reported by centre-basedservices, community preschools in the Bathurst electorate will receive $251,025 in additional funding under the model.

The model will see an average 20 per cent increase on current funding for the State’s community pre-schools.

“The additional funding delivered through the new Preschool Funding Model will provide increased base subsidies for children aged four and five in their year before school and three year old children from disadvantaged backgrounds in the Bathurst electorate,” local member, Paul Toole said.

Mr Toole said that all services in the Bathurst electorate will have time to transition to their new allocation over three years, with no preschool receiving less funding for two years as a result of these policy changes. A 50 per cent transition amount will also be provided in the third year.

Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli said the changes are based on the recommendation of the Brennan Review, that access to early childhood education should be more effectively directed to four and five year old children in their year before school, and to Aboriginal and disadvantaged children.

For those long day care providers who receive funding from the NSW Government current funding allocations will be retained.

Course offered to young drivers in Bathurst

JESSICA HANN Young drivers are most likely to be involved in crash in the months after they obtain their provisional license. In a move to help young drivers in Bathurst, Panorama Road Safety and the Bathurst PCYC have been running a Safer Drivers Course.

The program is an initiative of the NSW government that gives young drivers different skills that will allow them to cope with any risky situations they may encounter.

Proprietor of Panorama Road Safety Matthew Irvine said that unlike many other road safety campaigns that treat all young drivers as though they are traffic offenders, this program treats them with respect and recognizes their strengths.

“Call up the PCYC and book in. It’s a great program like nothing you’ve ever done before in the ‘learner driver’ space, and you’ll be well rewarded with a 20 hour discount of your logbook hours,” he said.

“The only requirement is that you have a current NSW Learner license and that you’ve done at least 50 hours

of driving. If you’re still working toward the 50 hour target, give us a call anyway and we’ll give you all the information you need and save you a place on a future course.”

The first Safer Drivers course in Bathurst was held in August, and due to high demand there has already been seven local courses delivered since.

Mr Irvine said he has seen a lot of positive results in the students.

“I can see the results in the car every time I conduct the on-road sessions. I literally see their eyes light up when they ‘get it’,” he said.

“The feedback from participants has been incredibly pleasing, because not only does it prove that the content is just right, it lets us all know we’re hitting the mark with the delivery of the program too. “ I am seeing drivers who are more self-assured in their decision-making and drivers who now really know how to identify and manage risks as they drive.”

The Safer Drivers Course costs $140 and caters for 12 students at a time. The next two courses are scheduled for late November.

Chiko stays;

Jobs go at “Edgell’s” DAVID DIXON The famous Chiko roll will still be produced at Bathurst’s 80-year-old food production plant; but the good news ends there for local staff.

Despite the news that 110 permanent positions will be lost at the Simplot food manufacturing plant — known for decades in Bathurst as “Edgells” — Bathurst Regional Council will continue its offer of support to the plant.

Council said that it was disappointing that the plant would be scaling back its operations with only 55 jobs remaining in the production of frozen and canned corn and the iconic Chiko Roll.

The support from Council included a pledge to provide infrastructure support amounting to $170,000 in the 2013/14 financial year and a further $50,000 a year allocated over the following two years.

The work was to include installation of a water collection system to enable rainwater to be used in bathrooms and showers; a cooling tower to enable

water re-use through the plant; and infrastructure that will enable better use of water coming into the plant that will pass through an additional UV treatment process on site.

“Our thoughts today are with those people directly employed by Simplot and their families who are affected by this decision to reduce production at the Bathurst plant,” Bathurst Mayor Councillor Gary Rush.

“While this decision is not good news for Bathurst, Council’s focus will continue to be on implementing our economic development strategies to ensure the diversity and continued growth of our local economy and identifying opportunities that add to our prosperity into the future.”

Cr Rush said news that the scaled down operations would not impact the livelihood of local growers, who are also part of the Simplot supply chain, was some compensation to the community.

“This is a tough day for those who face the prospect of losing their jobs and I think it’s important that as a Council and a community we do what we can to ensure there is adequate support for these people to find employment elsewhere,” Cr Rush added.

“Equally, it is important that we continue to do what we can to ensure the company remains operating to whatever capacity it can in Bathurst into the future to protect those jobs and local growers that continue to rely on its operation,” Cr Rush concluded.

$600,000 extra under Gonski

New York marathon for CSU indigenous students DAVID DIXON It’s a long way from Bathurst to New York City; but not too far for local indigenous marathon runner and Charles Sturt University student, Elise Hull.

Months of dedicated training was recently rewarded when Elise joined her Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) team mates to compete in the New York City Marathon.

Elise is a Bachelor of Arts student and Indigenous resource officer in the Division of Student Learning at

“In particular, the Indigenous Student Services staff donated a Garmin running watch to me after the Gold Coast training camp,” she said.

“This watch has seen me through hundreds of kilometres of training, my boss, Dr Barbara Hill, has really looked out for me throughout this whole time, making sure I’m okay and ignoring my ‘marathon brain’, which I’m very grateful for.

“Many other staff members have been actively involved in encouraging me, and a special

Public schools in Bathurst will be $600,000 better off under new Gonski reform funding arrangements next year.

Bathurst West Public School is the big winner amongst local schools with a total funding allocation for the year rising $143,291 to $256,199; Kelso High will be $132,535 better off and Bathurst High $106,511.

None of the Bathurst region public schools will receive less funding than last year though two — Black Springs and Trunkey — will receive the same funding as last year.

The Education Department recently published a list of funding allocations to be delivered through the State Government’s resource allocation model (RAM).

The new funding arrangement is decided on two factors; socio-economic benchmarking and Aboriginal program funding.

Under the new funding model, $300 million will be distributed across all public schools on the socio-economic and Aboriginal loadings.

Of this additional funding, $100 million has been made possible by the Gonski agreement.

Bathurst Regional Art Gallery in Keppel Street is to become the home for one of the original art pieces on show at Sydney’s famous Sculpture by the Sea exhibition.

This follows Bathurst Regional Council successfully securing a $20,000 grant — the first of its kind from the NSW Government — to purchase one of the high-profile sculptures as a permanent part of the local collection.

Acquisition of the sculpture is

part of a long-term plan by Council to create a sculpture walk and public art attraction in the Art Gallery’s busy Keppel Street hub.

Bathurst Mayor, Councillor Gary Rush said that the grant was partrecognition of the reputation of the Bathurst Gallery as a leading regional arts centre.

“We were fortunate to beat 29 other local Councils competing for the grant to secure this high profile artwork, which is testament to the quality of our collection and the reputation amongst the art world

Ophir Road subdivision proposal Ophir Road north of Bathurst is the site of a huge new proposed subdivision of 332 lots to be developed on the fringes of the city.

The land involved in the development is at Lot 112, Ophir Road, Llanarth with the size of the development seeing provision for a proposed future school in the area.

With Bathurst’s population to grow by more than 10,000 in the next 18 years, the “Riverview Heights” lots are likely to feed this demand.

The development is likely to be a staged development with blocks rolled out over a number of years with Riverview Heights to meet demand for several years to come.

Bathurst Council believes that the development is a vote of confidence in the future growth for the city, which celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2015.

Jessica Spence wins V8 Ambassador Contest JESSICA HANN After many months of fundraising, Jessica Spence was announced as the winner of the Bathurst City Centre V8 Ambassador Contest at the RCG Locksmith Ball.

The competition involved eight girls who raised around $25 000 between them for the two local charities Carenne School and Glenray Industries.

Jessica said she was very excited to be announced as the winner of the competition.

“There were a lot of girls that were just as involved in the community as me, if not more, so it was pretty stiff competition,” she said.

“There was zero rivalry though. You kind of resign yourself to the fact that someone better is going to win anyway so actually being called out as the winner was really nice.”

As part of her fundraising efforts, Jessica organized a Girls Night In as well as a Chocolate Jar Guessing Competition.

She also approached many businesses for donations over the months leading up to the ball.

The winner of the V8 Ambassador competition was selected after an interviewing process based on the girls’ aspirations and community involvement.

Jessica has had a lot of community involvement through her work at the Show Office as part of the AH&P Association. She was part of the Gold Crown competition in 2011 and has just implemented a training program for high school age kids that allow them to volunteer at the show and gain leadership skills.

She said the V8 Ambassador competition was a great experience, and would encourage more girls and boys to consider participating.

“It’s an opportunity to get involved in the community and you can have fun while you raise money, which I managed to do. I think I probably enjoyed the experience just because I had fun,” she said.

“It gives you so many skills that you’ll be able to use later on in life. You don’t just fundraise: you actually get more out of it than you put in at the end. I’d definitely encourage everybody to do it.”

Name your legends for new roads at the Mount Race fans both young and old are being asked to help make a permanent mark on Australia’s favourite race track at Mount Panorama.

Time to recognise the legends of the Mount with locals asked to make suggestions for new road names.

As part of the continuing development at the world-famous motor racing circuit, Bathurst Regional Council is completing new roads in and around Mount Panorama and wants names of famous race drivers as suggestions.

The call is going-out to local race fans and residents to tell Council who their favourite bike or car racing legends are to be honoured in the new road naming list.

Race fans can participate and have their say in an online survey by listing one or up to 20 names from the 75 years of Mount

Panorama legends that have made their name on the circuit.

The list will be compiled together in order of popularity and rolled out over the next few months when the roads are complete.

The road-naming project is a further way Council is marking the legacy of 75 years of motor sport at Mount Panorama, Bathurst Mayor, Councillor Gary Rush said.

“The transformation of the scenic tourist road into this world class motor racing circuit has created some incredible legends in the world of motor sport,” he

said.

“We want to ensure that some of those names become a permanent part of the mountain and who better to help make that choice than the fans who have supported those drivers that have made Mount Panorama the iconic motor sport mecca it is,” Cr Rush said.

Those who complete the survey will also have the chance to win a prize pack consisting of two tickets to the 2014 Bathurst 1000; two tickets to the 2014 12-Hour and a Mount Panorama Promotional Prize Pack.

Inter-Dominion could return to new “Panorama Paceway” Australia and New Zealand’s premier harness racing series, the Inter-Dominion, could return to Bathurst after completion of the new $7.5 million harness racing complex. the opportunity to have a few meetings before the opening” Danny says.

Once finalised, the track will be comparable to the world standard long-track at the home of NSW Harness Racing at Menangle.

Danny believes that the new circuit with a plush grandstand and private boxes will be able to attract a new audience to the sport as well as benefiting country trainers.

“It’s all part of Harness Racing NSW Strategic Plan putting together new tracks in country NSW,” Mark says.

“Bathurst is the first, then there’ll be Wagga, then there’ll be Tamworth, it will be a new era for this generation and the next generation, the Amanda Turnbull’s and those coming on,” he explains.

While the impetus, money and drive for the new track has come from the harness racing industry — fighting for survival against a whole range of new entertainment and gambling outlets — the project couldn’t have got off the ground without the help of the local Council.

“Bathurst Regional Council have really given harness racing in regional NSW a kick on; it’s their land and we’ve got a 99-year lease,” Mark says.

“Danny and I started this three and half years ago, but Paul Toole has been part of this to get this going; it was his instigation for finding the land when he was mayor,” he adds.

The new track, far removed from the old 800m track at the Showground used since the 1950s, will offer country trainers the chance to compete against their city rivals on an even footing.

“This will be a stepping-stone to Menangle, a lot of horses that race on the 800m track can’t adapt, this will help them get used to the 1070m tracks,” Mark says.

“We used to have heats of the Inter-Dominion here; with this new track, we could again in the future,” Danny says.

DAVID DIXON Excavation work is well underway on the new circuit at the site bordered by College Road, Ethelton Avenue, and the Vale Road and Bathurst Harness Racing Chief Executive Officer Danny Dwyer and President Mark Collins couldn’t be happier.

“It’s going really good, they’ve done a fair bit of earthworks and the concreters are getting in there today,” Danny enthuses.

The new long-track replaces the old 1950s tightcornered post-and-rail lined track at Bathurst Showground that handicaps country trainers and horses trying to compete against the top city teams.

Home to the prestigious Gold Crown series and with such legends of the track as the 1970s champion; the “Bathurst Bulldog” Hondo Grattan, Bathurst is the ideal location for the sport to enter the 21st century with the weather gods smiling on the project.

“They’ve only had four–five days they’ve been delayed; it’s been very straightforward,” Mark says of the project only started in July.

And almost all the material for the excavations has come from either the site itself or locally: “There’s lots of good granite on the site which we’ve been able to use…we’ve brought in no soil and we knew there was granite here,” Mark says.

“The racing surface will be manufactured sand, hopefully, sourced locally at East Guyong…we’ve had very good compaction tests,” Danny added.

Elaine and Phil Verhelst opened up their new shop; ‘Unique’ at Crago Mill last Friday. Elaine and Phil are the original owners of the Bathurst Teddy Bear Shop which some of you may remember. ‘Unique’ stocks gifts including jewellery, bags, perfume bottles, doll’s house furniture, fossils, teddy bears and so much more! Welcome back Elaine and Phil!

The parks of Bathurst are blooming at the moment with plenty of bright colours. A great place for a picnic and a stroll!

Fundraising for Bathurst Girl Guides Bathurst Girl Guides help a special fundraising Halloween event last week with just over 160 children taking part. With some amazing costumes on display, the kids went around to entertain volunteer homes with songs, dances, jokes and poems in return for treats.

The Bathurst Guides would like to thank everyone for their support, in particular the owners of the 30 houses who agreed to give out the treats. The event could not have run without them. Kind donations also came from Pizza Capers, McDonalds and Tic Tac Ferrero Lithgow; Guides are very grateful.

Thanks for the donations Daniella Mancia and Natalie Reid from Curves Bathurst would like to thank all of those people who made donations to go to the fire victims. They are pictured here with a very grateful lady from Springwood who was affected by the bushfires.

Remembrance Day CONTRIBUTED The lead up to Remembrance Day is our annual Poppy Day Appeal held on Friday, November 8th on behalf of the United Returned Soldiers’ Fund. The Bathurst RSL Women’s Auxiliary members will organise the packing of badges to distribute to the many sellers consisting of sub branch, women’s auxiliary, students from various schools, RSL Club and other businesses. Kevin Wren will drive the mini bus to collect students from their various schools and later deliver them back safely. Last year the appeal raised almost $6000.

Commemoration Service The commemoration service will commence at 10.25 am on Monday, November 11th 2013 when the Catafalque party from Scots School Cadet Unit mount the guard.

The president Denis Chamberlain will conduct the service on behalf of Bathurst RSL Sub Branch and give the introduction. Reverend Howard Knowles to conduct prayers. Music is to be provided by the Bathurst City and RSL Band Association under Conductor, Mathias RogalsKoczorowski. Last Post and Reveille will be sounded by bugler Peter Denmead. Councillor Gary Rush, new Mayor of Bathurst Regional Council will offer a welcome and open the service. Our special guest speaker is talented Year six student Josie Geerkens of Bathurst South Public School.

Bill Abbott, Brian Tobin and others will provide chairs for

the band and elderly to have some comfort during the service. During the service a number of wreaths will be laid, the service generally taking about 40 minutes.

All Saints’ Cathedral bell tower captain Chris Bacon has arranged for his bell ringers to commence ringing the bells a little after 10.00 am to summons people to the War Memorial Carillon for the service.

Bathurst RSL sub branches main project for 2015 will be the dedication of a supreme sacrifice plaque recording all those who died from the wider Bathurst district. Some 432 names are already listed. If anyone is in doubt if their ancestor is recorded on this new plaque, they should contact our office between 10 am to 12 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. WHO AM I?

I was born in 1943, given the Christian names Cornelius Crane. I was in the original cast of Saturday Night Live and described at the time as “the funniest man in America”.

I then successfully pursued a film career, with leading roles in Caddyshack (1980), Fletch (1985) and the National Lampoon’s Vacation series. These days I play Pierce Hawthorne in TV comedy series Community.
