Hi friends Between you and me, I continue to get great feedback about the new look of our paper.

But it seems you can’t please all of the people all of the time and it seems it hasn’t been to the liking of all readers.

One local lady took to our Facebook page to claim it smelt like fish, while another reader preferred the old stock of paper as her worms preferred to eat it!

Thanks for the feedback people – we always appreciate it.

A funny note this week was the reaction of my fiancé Cath to my page 3 column last week about living on $25 a week for food.

It turns out a glaring typo in the column had me in a relationship with a him rather than a her.

Not surprisingly, the coffee The Shoosher was drinking at the time she read the column was spat across the table in surprise, followed by the obligatory question – “Is there something you need to tell me?”

“No my love, just a slip of the fingers as I typed the column – oops”, was my response.

Anyway – just thought I’d clear that up in case any local fellas had any ideas.

We are also pleased to announce that a new sales/account manager has started with BCL last week, as we welcome Harry Chamberlain to the Bathurst City Life team.

Harry is a graduate of the Media Sales degree at CSU here in Bathurst and is young, keen and stoked to join our small team.

In the coming weeks, I hope to introduce him to our advertisers. If you are interested in including BCL as part of your marketing plan, please give me or Harry a call and we will see how we can help grow your business’ exposure in Bathurst.

Finally, thanks to the Bathurst CWA for their support of a new section of our paper.

Since I took over ownership of the paper, I have wanted to offer a cooking page for readers to give them something to try each week when reading our paper.

Bumping into Liane from the CWA at a recent event, I proposed the idea and she has embraced it whole-heartedly with the support of the Bathurst CWA. Each week, I plan to pry some culinary secrets from its members and share them with readers – and also tell a short story of the person behind each week’s recipes.

I hope you enjoy them, and give each recipe a crack when you get a chance.

Motorsport course attracts international interest Befitting its surroundings at the internationally renowned Mount Panorama race track, the TAFE Motorsport course at Bathurst has this year welcomed four international students to its ranks.

DAVE RANKINE TWO STUDENTS from Portugal, one from Hong Kong and another from India will call Bathurst home during 2015, as they participate in one of the leading motorsport courses in the country.

Portugese Ricardo Nunes told Bathurst City Life this was the only course of its type globally that was located at a world-class circuit.

“Mount Panorama is so well known and the course offered everything I was looking for, so my wife and I arrived last month and I have been impressed with what I have seen,” Ricardo enthused.

It was a sentiment shared by Indian Suraj Bhalla, who owned

his mechanic business at home in Mumbai, but wanted a challenge that would take him to the next level in the industry.

“I studied in Melbourne in 1996 as a motor mechanic and after 14 years in the industry I wanted to upgrade my knowledge,” Raj said.

“I loved Australia and this looked like a fascinating course so I jumped at the chance to come here.”

Raj added that he has been blown away by how professional the set-up is and the opportunity to work on and build race-cars and then see them run at Mount Panorama has been fantastic.

“I tell you, I am waking up and smiling every day I come to this course,” he beamed.

Similarly, Hong Kong native Kon Pang Chan said the change of lifestyle from the ramped and bustling Hong Kong has been a welcome relief for the course member.

“I have been back-packing in Australia for the past two years and was looking for a course that would drive my passion for motorsport – I think I have found it,” he said.

“This is a great way to get a foot in the door with racing and will provide valuable experience for me within the industry.”

Kon said already he has been able to see motorsport from a different angle and it is a view he really likes.

A Bathurst Country Women’s Association (CWA) stalwart and its oldest current member, Elsie is a legend in local circles and has been cooking for an amazing 83 years.

One of nine children in West Wyalong NSW, Elsie told Bathurst City Life she started cooking at 13 when she left school.

“In 1927, my mum used to make all of the bread and scones for the local show, and the kids used to also cook for it over the years,” she said.

“There were nine kids in the family and I was a long way down the list at seven so cooking for a family of 11 was really important for us.”

Elsie said she has always loved to cook and her first prize was for a sponge cake at just 16 at her local show.

She joined the CWA in 1971 and became an official cooking judge 17 years later.

“I have done quite a bit of judging at state level since then and my late husband and I travelled around the state on behalf of the CWA as a judge,” she added.

Having cooked for such a long period of time, Elsie said a common mistake many cooks make is not to measure and weigh ingredients.

“Many cooks have been doing it for so long they think they can just guess, but it is vital to measure and weigh all of your ingredients to ensure you get the best possible result,” she said.

Elsie has been good enough to share some of her favourite recipes in our new cooking section on page 21.

Lead singer of the Foo Fighters and former Nirvana drummer once famously wrote: “When I think about kids watching a TV show like American Idol or The Voice, then they think, ‘Oh, OK, that’s how you become a musician, you stand in line for eight hours with 800 people at a convention center and… then you sing your heart out for someone and then they tell you it’s not good enough.’ Can you imagine?”

“It’s destroying the next generation of musicians!

“Musicians should go to a yard sale and buy an old drum set and get in their garage and just suck. And get their friends to come in and they’ll suck, too. And then they’ll start playing and they’ll have the best time they’ve ever had in their lives and then all of a sudden they’ll become Nirvana.

Because that’s exactly what happened with Nirvana.

Just a bunch of guys that had some crappy old instruments and they got together and started playing some noisy-ass stuff, and they became the biggest band in the world.

“That can happen again! You don’t need a computer or the internet or The Voice or American Idol.”

And I could not agree more.

In my humble opinion there is nothing better than listening to live music.

And not some faketanned DJ in a skimpy bikini pushing buttons on her iPad and playing some computerized rubbish.

No I am talking three dudes in singlets and flannos with a drum kit, a guitar and a bass –

playing their hearts out.

Last Saturday night, I joined and handful of music lovers at the Anglican Church hall to hear new local band “The Lizard Coin” play their last rehearsal before their first gig at the E&C this Friday night.

And as I listened to these kids punching out tune after tune, Dave Grohl’s quote resonated with me.

Because I reckon these three lads probably started out this very same way – in their dad’s garage, getting a few tunes they like, jamming them and whammo – they are on the cusp of their first gig.

These kids were young, raw, enthusiastic, not-so-tight but really talented and as a frustrated musso – I absolutely loved it.

It took me back to my youth, when I jammed Midnight Oil tunes with my mates in my parent’s basement and it reminded me why live music is such a wonderful thing.

Life is about doing the things that you love and these lads were just as happy to be rocking out in front of 20 people as they were in front of a full house.

And, with my kids both learning instruments and more likely to listen to computer manufactured synth pop or game show pop idols than good old fashioned rock music, I will be bringing them to the gig on Friday night to see what real music is all about.

I suggest you get along too – if you love raw, live music – and want a good night out.

New chapter for Bathurst Library DAVE RANKINE A vital outreach service supplied by Bathurst Library received a welcome shot in the arm last week, with the announcement of a $50,000 grant to assist in buying a new mobile library van.

Manager of Bathurst Library, John Cumberford, told Bathurst City Life he was thrilled with the boost of funding for the well-loved and popular library for the Bathurst community.

“This money will provide a replacement mobile library vehicle for visiting remote villages of Hill End, Sofala, Wattle Flat, Turondale, Trunkey Creek, Rockley, Meadow Flat, O’Connell and housebound residents and will make library services more accessible for residents.”

The mobile library van will be replaced under the new grant, while Bathurst regional Council will fund the fit out for the new vehicle.

“It is just great news and will ensure we have the most modern service we can offer for our growing list of clients,” John added.

Local member, Paul Toole, said the funding injection is part of a NSW Public Library Infrastructure program.

“I’m proud our community is benefiting from this new program,” he said The Public Library Infrastructure Grants program is administered by the State Library of NSW on behalf of the Library Council of NSW. All NSW councils were invited to apply for grants in September 2014.

CAMPAIGN TO TARGET LITTER

CSU Green and Bathurst Regional Council, with the assistance of EPA grant funding, have joined forces for the Hey Tosser! Bathurst project.

DAVE RANKINE THE PROJECT was launched last year and roll-out began last week in Bathurst in a bid to provide waste and litter education and community engagement plans to tackle litter across the Bathurst CBD. The Hey Tosser! Bathurst project team debuted the program at the CSU Bathurst O Week Market Day last Monday, while information will also be available at a stall at the Bathurst Sustainable Living Expo on March 28.

Project officer Alesha Elbourne told Bathurst City Life the market day provided some fun giveaways and she was able to answer a number of litter reduction questions people had to help keep the university campus and town a clean and enjoyable place.

“The Library Hub area at CSU has also undergone a makeover in time for the beginning of 2015,” she noted.

“With new infrastructure including bins, seating, stainless steel noticeboards and signage being installed as well as a significant clean up of the communal area.”

DAVE RANKINE THE IDEA of bringing Abercrombie House and an antiques fair together seemed to be the perfect union on the first day of Autumn.

And so it was that the historic home on Bathurst’s outskirts hosted the inaugural Bathurst Antique Fair.

The event was held in association with King’s Antiques in the heritage environs of the region’s unique historic mansion, home of the Morgan

family.

A modest number of antique traders were sprawled across the lower floor of the magnificent house, with the ballroom overflowing with treasures for antique lovers of all ages.

The event was well patronised with a steady stream on visitors during the morning, no doubt assisted by the Autumn Colours publication which outlines so many activities in the community during the coming three months.

Lindsay McKellar has been a resident of Bathurst his whole life, and for him there was one day that stood out.

On 12 February 1954 Queen Elizabeth 11 and her husband Prince Philip visited Bathurst.

Although the visit was only 75 minutes, the newspapers called it ‘Bathurst’s Greatest Day’.

The Bathurst ‘National Advocate’ reported “… in that period Bathurst had made History, and an achievement which will never be forgotten in the hearts and minds of those who so wildly acclaimed the Royal visitors”.

More than 80 thousand people gathered in Bathurst to welcome the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. It was the greatest crowd the city had ever known.

On the day of the Royal visit Mr McKellar, aged 19, was helping his parent with the Bathurst High School Auxiliary stall at the Showground by

selling soft drinks.

Mr McKellar said “I managed to disappear to take photos of their (Royals) car travelling into town near the Denison Bridge and the welcome gates that had been erected”.

People arrived in Bathurst on Thursday, and by midnight about 4,000 of the vanguard were present. Scores of people wrapped in blankets, slept on King’s Parade in front of the dais where the civic reception was later held.

“It is hard to imagine what that visit meant to

the people. Towns like Orange and Blayney were almost deserted as the enthusiasm to see the Royal couple swept the district” Memories of World War 2 were still vivid and the memory of King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth 10 walking through the rubble in the London streets to comfort people were still strong” “It was an emotional and an amazing day for me and thousands of others. My future wife and sister had a great view as members of the Girl Guide group assembled at the showground” The welcome arch that was crafted for the visit said “God Bless the Queen” and “Welcome to Bathurst”.

QuoCKa helping kids read

The QuoCKa Reading Program is a community service initiative organised by Quota International of Bathurst Inc. NOELENE PHILLIPS THE AIM of the program is to increase the literacy levels of the children and to encourage their love of books and break down barriers between police officers and children.

This is achieved by providing a community-based project involving Quota members, local police officers and volunteers who read to the children each week.

Each child receives a book to keep and books are donated to the school libraries.

Volunteers are sourced from

Quota members, retired school teachers and school principals, university lecturers, TAFE students, CSU students, police officers and anyone with one hour to spare each week and who is very passionate about the necessity of reading to children.

Now in its sixth year, the QuoCKa Reading program has expanded to five local Bathurst schools – Carenne Public School, Bathurst Public School, Bathurst West Public School.

Kelso Public School and this year the Perthville Public School have joined the program.

Where’s the money gone?

Many taxpayer dollars that went to TAFE will now go to private for-profit companies with poor quality courses – and the Senate is so concerned that they’ve announced an enquiry.

Students will pay for the cuts through higher TAFE fees. Basic certificates will now cost up to $4,000, with 40 per cent of students set to pay between $500 and $1,500 extra this year.

It is hoped that other schools in the district will avail themselves of this unique and very necessary program in the near future.

Over the past five years, it has been very alarming to find that some children do not own a book and therefore, books are not read to them. It is hoped that through the dedication of this group of passionate volunteers this void is being addressed.

Coupled with the deregulation of university fees, further education is looking increasingly out of reach for many in Bathurst.

Labor will reverse the Government’s TAFE fee hikes, and stop the shift to for-profit training organisations by capping government funding to private companies at 30 per cent – helping all TAFE students, not just a minority.

It’s been estimated that every $1 invested in NSW TAFE returns $6.40 to NSW economy. Labor’s investment will also be smart business.

In this Electorate we are working together to make a difference and improving our quality of life. Four years ago the people of NSW looked for a different direction and that is what has been delivered.

While The Nationals have been consistent in our endeavours to turn investment in regional NSW around over the last four years, Labor once again proved this week they have little interest in investing in regional communities.

Announcing its infrastructure plan in Sydney, Labor offered no alternative plan to match the NSW Nationals. Labor proved they should never represent any of our regional communities.

Labor’s plan is shameful; while we intend to boost regional NSW with $6 billion worth of investments in roads, country rail, water and health projects, schools and tourism infrastructure by leasing 49 per cent of Sydney’s poles and wires, Labor would undercut our regional funding and offer a woeful $1.5 billion to country people.

Reframing for better outcomes We all know that stress is bad for us… right? But what if our beliefs about stress were actually making things worse?

In the last decade a stress research program conducted in the US provided some interesting results, but perhaps not in the way you might expect.

In this study one group were told that stress was bad for them and could seriously impact life, cause illness and even early death.

The other group were told that stress was natural and when given the right response could actually improve thinking and outlook. No prizes for guessing that the first group suffered the inevitable poor health and lifestyle results that were predicted while the second group did notably better over an eight year period.

So what is going on here?

A quick summary of the results shows that in any situation a negative appraisal leads to negative thoughts, state and behaviours. Conversely a positive appraisal of the same situation leads to positive thoughts, state and behaviour.

How can we apply these results to everyday Life?

In coaching terms this is what we call reframing.

It is the ability to stop a moment in time, consider it from different angles and apply a different meaning. This is the moment when you can also consider what outcome you would prefer to generate as a result of

the process.

Remember too that each of us considers each situation in terms of how it relates to us personally. Reframing allows you to ask “what else could this mean?

What other purpose might this serve?

How might someone else be seeing this?” It also gives you space to ask, “how might my changed responses change the outcomes here?”

An example of a very simple reframe might be when you find yourself stuck in a queue at a busy time. You can spend your time champing at the bit or you might decide this moment is a gift that can be used for quiet balance and breathing.

An interaction with a complaining customer might be stressful or become an opportunity to expand your communication skills.

Simple reframes allow you to extract the benefits from any moment and create positive outcomes for yourself and for others.

It is the ability to stop a moment in time, ent consider it from differ angles and apply a different meaning.

Shining a green light this week on an issue brought to our attention at BCL: an article entitled “Wind energy vs. Wildlife, the shocking cost of renewable energy”.

First thing to note is the use of the word ‘shocking’ in the context of “shock headline” and “shock jock”. Second thing to note, the author, Clive Hambler, is a conservationist and lecturer in Biological and Human Sciences at the University of Oxford, concerned with bird and bat mortality rates associated with wind turbines. The plot thickens.

Why would an experienced ecological researcher be appearing to argue against renewable energy?

Actually, not renewable energy per se. Hambler cites research in this

2013 Spectator article to solely and specifically argue that wind turbines kill significant numbers of flying species. His opposition is to wind energy. Statistics are taken from a variety of studies in a number of countries and the evidence appears to support his argument. As a supporter of all renewable energies, these numbers are disturbing. I do not wish to deny the allegations. To gain some perspective, let’s place these mortality rates in a wider context.

A reality check from a 2005 paper on avian mortality in the US showed buildings killed more birds than anything else man-made, responsible for more than half the deaths. Combined with power lines, there’s seven out of ten

deaths. Cats killed over 10 per cent, while wind turbines were roughly equivalent to aeroplanes, neither responsible for mortality numbers reaching even one percent of the total.

Wind energy is not free from environmental cost. By comparison, however, burning fossil fuels for energy requires vast quantities of water better used for farming. Its emissions include not only carbon dioxide but vast quantities of toxic substances including mercury, lead, arsenic, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide, causing air pollution and acid rain, which is bad news for anything which breathes or drinks.

Energy from renewable sources including wind displaces these threats but everything we do has a cost.

Our insatiable need for energy has consequences.

Mitchell Conservatorium has just announced dates for its’ three annual school music workshop days, this year to be hosted again

by Charles Sturt University.

These mini music camps are exciting but can also a little bit nerve wracking for first timers. Our focus is giving student musicians an opportunity to come together in a very large group and play their instruments in an environment that their smaller school ensembles cannot replicate.

This can be a really good challenge and can also be a bit

scary in a good way!

Attending the workshop means you end up performing alongside other children you may not have even met before.

New music and different setting to their normal rehearsal routine allows the children to extend themselves and their abilities.

The students are able to connect with others and really that is what music is all about, coming together and connecting.

Awesome Orchestra Day May 19, Colossal Choral Day May20 and Monster Band Day May 21 will all take place in their fabulous, light filled venue at the CSU gymnasium.

MitCon expect up to 100 plus children attend each of these workshops and Graham Sattler MitCon Executive Director says “The day is a fun, engaging way to introduce students to playing music in a large group.

“We have some wonderful conductors and a great program of music on offer.”

These events and workshops are offered to all school aged music students from year three to twelve and are completely free but the experiential reward from the day is priceless.

Sunday March 15 Panther’s junior clinic, Bathurst Sportsground Junior Rugby League Players 5 to 12 years of age will have a fantastic opportunity to rub shoulders with Penrith Panthers players in the Reliance Credit Union skill development clinic taking place in Bathurst on Sunday March 15 at Bathurst Sportsground.

The clinic will be held as part of a range of activities for the local community to experience the hype around the Round 2 NRL game when Panthers tackle the Titans at Carrington Park.

WHO AM I?

I was born in Atlanta, Georgia, USA on February 11, 1981.

I grew up singing in a church choir before my mother moved my family to Houston because of our abusive father.

I became friends with Beyonce Knowles and we competed on a TV talent show. We didn’t win but continued performing together.

By 1997 the group signed a record deal under the name Destiny’s Child.

Over the following years we released three highly successful albums.

The band took a break in 2002 to pursue solo projects. My first solo album Simply Deep produced the smash hit single Dilemma.

I’ve released four more solo albums since.

I appeared as a judge on UK TV music competition The X Factor.

Guides enjoy picnic day Since 1926 Girl Guides and Girl Scouts worldwide have celebrated February 22, the shared birthday of Lord Robert Baden-Powell and his wife, Olave, the World Chief Guides as Thinking Day. Guides contribute to the Thinking Day Fund to help Guides in countries where it is needed.

This year Bathurst Guides celebrated with a family picnic on the Macquarie River near the Dennison Bridge. Guides, parents and siblings were able to join in activities such as canoeing, trying everyday activities with a ‘disability’, group skis, relays and more.

Thumbs up to Helma and Tony Mason for all their wonderful charity work and knowledgeable information. Their warmth, humour and commitment is what life is all about.

With a little help from her friends Spotted in Bathurst last week after a morning of door knocking was local Country Labor candidate Cass Coleman and her dedicated band of supporters.

A crafty solution to fundraising It was all smiles for Robyn Pryce, Dian Rigby and Di Rampton last week as the trio got together to raise money for upcoming the Relay for Life.

It was an open house with wall-to-wall craft with a large selection of donated craft and other items including sun-catchers, jewellery, hand-made cards and candles.

Dian told Bathurst City Life they trio were able to make a sizeable donation to the Relay and thanked everyone who supported the makeshift stall.

“We also want to thank Carol Dobson for her huge donation of hand-made jewellery and Janet Hess for her lavender sachets,” Dian said.

A big Thumbs up to the 524 bus drivers for their safe driving, courtesy, humour, knowledge of their job and surroundings. I have recently started travelling with them as I have visual issues and I couldn’t be happier.

Lovers of Celtic music will be able to enjoy the tenor voice of William Amer rendering those much beloved and some notso-familiar Irish songs in his one-man show – “Songs of Old Ireland”.

Featuring, among others, the stirring and defiant songs of home, “Ireland, Mother Ireland” and “Wearin’ of the Green” the afternoon concerts will include traditional, nostalgic, classical and happy tunes with audience participation.

The concerts will take place at Rockley Village Hall on Sunday March 15 at 2pm and Bathurst City Community Club on Sunday

March 22 at 2pm.

The Rockley concert will set music lovers back just $15 for adults and $10 for young adults $10, while primary school children and younger are free with paying adult.

There will also be a pre-show glass of “fizz” and a slice of Guinness cake for a gold coin donation.

The Bathurst performance will cost $20.

Greens Campaign Launch PHOTOS BY DAVE RANKINE Last Thursday, the Greens launched their vision for a secure energy future for Bathurst which stabilises household power bills, eliminates greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation and creates tens of thousands of new jobs across NSW. The plan would position the region as a world leader in the fast growing clean energy economy.

The economic and employment benefits of the Greens plan to transition to 100 per cent renewable electricity generation are substantial. It would bring more than 70,000 new jobs to NSW and serve as a platform for the development of an export-oriented manufacturing and services industry.

The centrepiece of the plan is the creation of Energy Service Agencies within the public sector to support the transition of households and small businesses from coal-based electricity and gas, according to Greens Candidate for Bathurst, Tracey Carpenter.

Ms Carpenter said this was about putting households and communities ahead of the vested interests in the energy industry.

“The Greens want the Bathurst/Lithgow regions to be able to embrace the clean energy future and reap the benefits of lower power bills, more jobs and the real chance of developing a vibrant exportbased local industry,” she stressed.

Greens Spokesperson on Energy and Education John Kaye was a guest at the launch and also spoke to the gathering at the Bathurst City Community Club.

It was with a degree of joy that I watched the weekend game between England and Sri Lanka and marveled at how poor the England bowling line-up was in managing to dismiss just one Sri Lankan as they chased down 312 runs to win.

Spotted coming back into Bathurst on Eglinton Road were riders in the senior category.

The race saw a large selection of competitors of all ages from the youngsters right through to the adults.

Winner of the men’s race was Josh Stapley, while Peta Cutler took out the women’s race as part of her journey towards Australian Ironman in Port Macquarie in May.

or some strange reason today we seem to over think things, stress about getting it right, then, do nothing.

We see compost as a daunting process and get bogged down in the technicalities. Well my approach is really not that hard.

Depending on the area you have to give over to a heap, or the method you like, either hot or cold, quick or slow.

It all comes down to how much fuel (kitchen scraps, garden clippings etc) you have to push through the process.

The permaculture ethic- “create no waste “really encouraged me to make a change.

I found it annoying, bring home the fruit and veg (that had been paid for by weight) peel, chop, and slice, throw half away. Or mow the lawn and try to cram it into the otto… curse the falling leaves and then buy mulch.

It will be a shame if our generation is the most wasteful in history. It makes no sense for the environment or our pocket. We can re-use the scraps recycling them into food for

plants …and it’s free.

Out on a property you can achieve huge steaming mounds and the turnover to composted matter is fast, in a small space you can still do it, it is just slower.

In my garden the compost area consists of two bays side by side so that I can easily turn one into the other. The consistency I like is more like mulch, than cooked down to fine dust. I like it to have life, be full of worms and still have texture.

Now let’s face it, if it’s not easy you won’t do it. Keep a pretty container with a lid, on your kitchen bench so you can pop in anything wasted. Take it with you when you go out to garden, hang out the wash or on your way to work.

If the compost is located somewhere you need to pass regularly, you will use it. You may prefer a worm farm if space is limited or you are renting. It can also be as simple as adding your non meat kitchen scraps straight into the garden.

A dear and treasured friend, Marinka, who had no space or

patience for turning compost, used the good old tried and true method practised for generations, adding scraps straight to the soil.

A spade was always ready, wedged into a gap in the garden, and she would duck out the kitchen door, scatter the peelings, then cover, positioning her spade into the earth for the next location. This worked well, the garden always thrived.

An area for compost need only be 1m x 1m to be effective as long as you can easily access it to turn. Turning aerates the heap, too dry and you notice white stringy fungus, too wet means slimy or smelly. Yes, it’s layering like lasagne.

GREEN – kitchen peelings, lawn clippings and soft pruning’s.

BROWN – straw, shredded paper, autumn leaves. MANURE – aged cow manure, organic pellets, chicken coop manure.

Whatever you choose, give something a try. Be kind to yourself and make it easy so that it will work, simple things, cut garden prunings smaller, so you don’t end up with a dumped heap beside your compost, causing overwhelming work at a later date, guilty, I know.

Line Dancing now happens as part of the Bathurst Inland City Dancers on Mondays at the Bathurst City Community Club and Wednesdays at the RSL Club. Mental Health Carer Support Service provides respite for carers of those with a mental illness, intellectual disability and autism. They provide a range of activities including craft, drives and outings, companionship, cooking, card games and bingo. St Stanislaus College Main Hall COMPILED BY A BATHURST HISTORIAN This is another photo from the archives of the Bathurst District Historical Society and shows the magnificent Marble Hall at St Stanislaus’ College which crowns the top of the hill overlooking Bathurst.

This school was designed by Edward Gell, a well-known Bathurst architect with great architectural skills.

Originally the school was situated on ten acres, part of which was a land grant from the New South Wales Government and the rest has been purchased.

The college is surrounded by Brilliant, Seymour and Bentinck Streets and began its history on the site in 1872. In that year the foundation stone was laid by Bishop Polding with the ceremony attracting a large crowd.

The Bishop asked for donations on the day with his request raising a massive £2,100 during the afternoon.

By September 1873 the first section of the new building was completed and the boys residing in rented cottages, known as Redruth Villa at the top of George Street, were able to move in.

In 1876 the next section was commenced which included the Chapel, Marble Hall and Boys Library. They were known as St Charles Seminary though these were not opened until 1881.

This part of the building was initially used from 1879 until 1892 for the training of priests with the seminary and school being run separately.
