Bathurst now has a new service to help out these people, the Bathurst tucker Van! the service kicked off in the second part of this year, and provides free hot meals for people experiencing disadvantage and homelessness. the van operates three days a week thanks to the help of volunteers, but the tucker Van is looking for more volunteers to help out! Welcome to the second of our promotional issues of Bathurst Photo News. Just to recap for those who may not have seen our first issue last month, we’re doing two issues of Bathurst Photo News before Christmas and we’re doing it for a few reasons. One of these is to see if there is someone in Bathurst who would like to start up their own Photo News business in Bathurst. Bathurst deserves their own Photo News each week, just like Orange and Dubbo, and we’re hoping that someone with the resources and skills required will come forward. Time will tell so let’s see what happens. In the meantime, we’re giving you another sample of what Photo News is all about and we hope you enjoy what we have put together for you. Through the following pages and in true Photo News tradition, you’ll find local stories, local people, local photos and local advertising all presented in our own unique way. Like all copies of Photo News, this issue can also be read online at www.myphotonews.com.au so take advantage of that. Lastly, we ran two reader competitions last month and the lucky winners are mentioned below. There are two more chances to win this issue so check how to win on our Just for Fun page. Have a great, safe and Happy Christmas folks, but in the meantime, please enjoy this issue of Bathurst Photo News.

Useful gifts

3

By BoB Holland I think it would be fair to say that many of us will buy Christmas Gifts this year for family, friends and loved ones and in many cases they won’t need or want what we give them. Today, gift giving at Christmas has gone way past the notion that ‘it’s the thought that counts” and for me personally, I struggle with the whole concept. It’s not the giving that I struggle with, or the sentiment, I struggle with the various pressures, expectations and obligations that impact on what should otherwise be a pleasurable thing to do. It is certainly no longer a case of “the thought that counts” and that’s sad. My purpose here is not to go down that road but rather to let readers know of an alternative way of giving a gift this year, a gift that will prove very useful for whoever receives it. The concept won’t appeal to everyone but it’s worth thinking about at least. A few weeks back, I mentioned an organization called TEAR Australia. TEAR works in partnership with Christian organizations around the world and with Indigenous Australians. Inspired by Jesus’ call to love our neighbours, TEAR focuses on community development projects that seek to improve the lives of the poorest and most marginalised people, regardless of background or belief, uniting communities and empowering men and women.

this is a noble option

Natalie Cox believes that the person to play herself in a movie about her life would be none other than a blonde nutbag I am... a cafe worker and aged care nurse My dream career is... working in an area of mental health in the criminal justice sector Many people don’t know that I... can be normal at times When I was young I wanted to... take over Charlotte St Bottlo and turn it into a place to make my own pots

My favourite book, movie and song is... If I’m Missing or Dead, Good Fellas – love that movie, and song, hmmm I don’t have one

played by... a blonde nutbag

My idea of the perfect date is… an unlimited supply of seafood and a beautiful location

I’m always being asked... ‘so what are you doing with yourself?’

It annoys me when... people try to argue with me when they don’t know what they’re talking about I love it when... I feel really sore after the gym, proves I worked hard I’m really scared of... nothing In the movie of my life I would be

It’s not trendy but I like... cooking random food, French knitting

The qualities I like in a man are... honesty, health and humour The qualities I dislike in a man are... when they’re arrogant, disrespectful, boring and have lack of responsibility

One of their programs is Useful Gifts where they invite you and me to buy a gift for someone or a community in desperate need and to do this on behalf of someone else. In other words, instead of buying that person a Christmas Gift that they may not want or need, you spend the money buying a Useful Gift for someone who’s desperate for help, and you do this in the name of the person you would otherwise have given the gift to. Gift options range from $5 to $10,000 and gifts can be selected to address particular areas of need such as better education, providing clean water, growing food and earning an income, improving health or simply building better and stronger communities. Gifts you can choose include $5 for School Supplies pencils, paper, a slate or for Fish Farming – to enable them to train to construct a fish pond and ultimately farm and sell fish. $10 for Tree Seedlings to assist with land-care training, soil erosion, protect water supplies and grow fruit. $20 for Safe Water, $25 for an Organic Vegetable Garden, $45 for Primary Schooling, $50 for a Goat, $70 for a safe Toilet, $100 for Small Business Creation and so it goes. I’m sure you’ll agree this is a noble option and I encourage anyone who would like to consider it further to go to www.usefulgifts.org

Crew keeps Mount in picture

Sights to remember By DAVID DIXON The people of Bathurst are being asked to dig deep to help young Campbell Barwick. In July 2010, six-year-old Campbell was diagnosed with Cone Rod Dystrophy, which is a degenerative eye disease that causes irreparable vision loss. Tests have shown that Campbell is losing three metres of sight a week. Bathurst McDonalds and the Bathurst Harness

Racing Club have joined forces to raise money for Campbell and his family to see the sights of Disneyland before it is too late for Campbell to see anything at all. The first function was held at McDonalds Bathurst in mid-November and was very successful. Over $3,500 was raised in donations and raffle ticket sales. The second function will be held at the Bathurst Harness Racing meeting on Boxing

night. The Club will donate money from entry fees as well as hold auctions and raffle prizes. People of Bathurst are asked to please support the effort for Campbell by attending the night. Or alternatively you can help Campbell by donating at – The Greater Building Society Bathurst Account name: Sights to Remember BSB: 637-000 Account Number: 718125634

By DAVID DIXON The thousands attending, and millions watching on television the Bathurst 1000 each year, would little realise the amount of work that goes into maintaining Mount Panorama as one of the great race-tracks in the world. Much of the grounds maintenance of the track is carried out by people like the Glenray Outdoor Maintenance Team contracted by Bathurst Regional Council. Glenray worker, Craig Pasani, was pictured recently taking a break from mowing up the top of the Mountain at The Esses with the city behind him. .

Bathurst’s heritage treasure Looking forward to eternal rest

By GRACE JOHNS

By Kate Bracks Can you believe that it is nearly the end of the year? november was only yesterday and now in some sort of cosmic way, most of December will almost seem to skip by and Christmas will be upon us. Where do the days go at this time of year? shops are full of Christmas decorations and catalogues fill the letterbox imploring you to buy – buy – buy! What I look forward to most at this time of year is a rest. Being able to sleep-in; have a slow breakfast and read the paper; spend time with family and friends – all of the things that I enjoy so much but find so hard to fit into ‘everyday life’. the only problem is that I know that my ‘Christmas rest’ comes to an end quite quickly. Jesus tells us ... “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matt 11:28–29) While I might enjoy a Christmas rest in the coming weeks, it is the eternal rest in Christ that I am really looking forward to.

Bathurst history: Christopher Morgan outside the front of Abercrombie House, one of Bathurst’s most stunning attractions

a t n Sa

p o p u a lar s ’

If you lIve In Bathurst and have never seen abercrombie house up close - then drop everything - you have to see this! Abercrombie House is one of the finest historic mansions in the region and is also the private home of the Morgan family. It was built during the 1870’s by James horne stewart, and it is quite a sight to see. The architecture reflects the medieval heritage of the ancient stewart clan, and the granite house has 52 rooms, 7 staircases, a huge ballroom, 30 fireplaces and also contains the lifetime collections of the Morgan family, who began a lifelong project in the 1960’s to restore the house to its victorian grandeur. the best part is throughout the year the house is opened to the public for tours, as it has been for 40 years now. It is open regularly on saturday and sunday mornings, as well as at other times for coach groups. the house and gardens are available for wedding ceremonies, as well as other special events held by Christopher and Xanthe Morgan. “Great things are organised for the coming year,” Christopher told Photo news. “right now we are just planning a series of special concerts, dinners and recitals in our ballroom and some special themed tours, early morning breakfast tours after Christmas, night tours for children in the autumn and winter and a host of other activities,” he said. these events help raise money needed to maintain and restore the magnificent historic house. the new year will kick off with plenty of tours and events in January, including the very popular teddy Bear’s Picnic Day for young families on sunday, January 16. not only this, but Christopher and Xanthe also use part of the property for overnight primary school camps and also a horse riding school for junior beginner riders. so if you are visiting Bathurst or you’re a local that’s never seen this heritage treasure then head down to the Bathurst visitor Information Centre for details on tours, or email abercrombiehouse@bigpond.com.

Help establish a mental health community centre!

statistics suggest that 1 in 4 people are, will be or have had a mental illness in their lives. An important aspect of recovering or dealing with mental illness is a healthy, community environment where people can express themselves and talk to others with mental illnesses. Although Bathurst has several medical centres for those suffering from mental illness, it currently doesn’t have a mental health community centre. A mental health community centre isn’t a medical centre or an assessment centre, but instead a place where people with mental health problems can meet in a safe, relaxed, non judgemental and helpful environment. A group is currently working to establish one of these centres, as Bathurst is currently one of the only towns in the Central West without one, however funding is needed to secure this. the centre, that is to be called ‘the Hut’, will be open to all members of the community, especially those that have or currently suffer from a mental illness. the centre will hold ceramics and theatrical programs, and currently has support from Bathurst Council, the gaol, welfare organisations and medical centres. A premises for the Hut has been located, however without help and funding from the community it won’t be able to open. the Hut will cost around $50,000 a year to maintain, and the Hut is looking for donations and sponsors to help with its establishment. the Hut is a registered organisation, so donations can be claimed. this is a truly worthy cause – if you’d like to help out by sponsoring or donating to the Hut you can phone david on 0414 768 160 for more information.

A student prAnk, six months, and $50,000 later, Bathurst regional Council is almost ready to begin the restoration of the historic Crago Memorial Fountain in Machattie park. the ornate wrought–iron fountain has been shut down for nearly six months after its spout was broken off in a late night prank with Council staff unable to complete the delicate repair work. A new spout has been created and Council staff hope the refurbishment of the Fountain can soon be started. the Fountain was built in 1891 and marks businessman Francis Crago’s contribution to the community as an alderman and mayor in the 1890’s. the F Crago and sons Flour Mill operation was a significant part of Bathurst’s economic base in the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s and produced ‘snowdrift’ brand flour. He opened a mill in newtown in the late 1890’s and thence relocated his family and the centre of his business operations to sydney. And 120-year’s later; his unique contribution to Bathurst will soon once again take pride of place in our local park. .

BATHURST FIRE FIGHTERS

on the FRONTLINE Words and portrait by Kiki Hopcraft

Guy Dover Station Commander As Station Commander, Guy is the officer in charge; he looks after the day-to-day running of the station, and oversees the plan of attack for incident calls. He has been a part of the force for nearly 27 years, and has seen the role of a fire fighter shift from a simple response unit to emergency call outs, to become a pro-activate part of the community. He enjoys being able to assist those in need, and seeing the camaraderie of his fellow workers. He is safe knowing that he has their backs covered, and they have his back covered too.

Karen Johns When I woke up this morning my first thought was… what shoes will I wear today? My most hated household chore is... mopping the floors My favourite song at the moment is… songs from Ronan Keating’s new Duets album My favourite food is… chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce One thing I miss about being a kid is… no responsibilities I just can’t resist… shoes My favourite invention in my lifetime is… the digital camera My three most cherished items are… my two kids, and my shoes If I could buy anything right now, it would be… an overseas trip I wouldn’t be caught wearing....comfortable shoes If today was the best day of my life it would be because… I was happy, healthy and with my family One day I will… run out of room for my shoes

Ben Bignell Level 2 Fire Fighter Ben is in his third year of full time training, on his way to become a fully-fledged firie. He never wanted to be a fire fighter growing up, but after becoming an on-call retained fighter for 5 years, he became hooked on the thrill of helping the community and took the next step to becoming a full time firie. Ben loves the working conditions, being able to come back to Bathurst after training in Alexandria and working with old work mates, and also being able to help each other out during a call out. “There are lots of bonuses to being a fire fighter - I love it” he said.

The professor had the following logic: “Has anyone in this class heard God?” Nobody spoke. “Has anyone in this class touched God?” Again, nobody spoke. “Has anyone in this class seen God?” When nobody spoke for the 3rd time, he simply stated, “Then there is no GOD.” The student did not like the sound of this at all, and asked for permission to speak. The professor granted it, and the student stood up and asked the following questions of his classmates: “Has anyone in this class heard our professor’s brain?” Silence. “Has anyone in this class touched our professor’s brain?” Absolute silence. “Has anyone in this class seen our professor’s brain?” When nobody in the class dared to speak, the student concluded, “Then, according to our professor’s logic, it must be true that our professor has no brain!” The student received top marks for this class.

NOTHING CHANGES For all the fathers out there, how many of these have you said? Don’t ask me, ask your mother. Were you born in a tent? Close the door. You didn’t beat me. I let you win. Now you listen to ME, Buster! “Hey” is for horses. This will hurt me a lot more than it hurts you. You call that noise “music”? We’re not lost. I’m just not sure where we are. No, we’re not there yet. As long as you live under my roof, you’ll live by my rules. I’ll tell you why. Because I said so. That’s why. Wipe that smile off your face. Don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see. What part of NO don’t you understand? Hey, did you hear me talking to you? You know you’re always gonna be Daddy’s little girl. I’m not watching television. I’m resting my eyes. Don’t use that tone with me! Am I talking to a brick wall? If I catch you doing that one more time, I’ll... Two wrongs do not make a right. What did I just get finished telling you?

By DAVID DIXON Work is Well underWay for the new display at Bathurst railway station of former Prime Minister Ben Chifley’s famous engine. The D50 class steam locomotive No 5112 was famously driven by Australia’s 16th Prime Minister (1945-49) Ben Chifley in the 1920’s. At a time when Labor Party politicians used to come from working-class jobs, Chifley worked as an engine driver for the NSW Government Railways. The display featuring the engine is likely to be completed by the end of the year with the full restoration to cost around $250,000. The display featuring the engine will complement the restoration and display of Chifley’s modest house near the rail line in Busby Street.

GOOD THINKING

The Boss asked one worker, “What time did you get back from lunch?” The employee said, “About a quarter of twelve.” The Boss said, “I saw you coming in at 3 o’clock.” “Well”, responded the worker, “Three is a quarter of twelve, isn’t it?” **** I met a man who had been married for 66 years. “Amazing. 66 years!” I said. “What’s the secret to such a long, happy marriage?” “Well,” he replied, “It’s like this. The man makes all the big decisions and the woman just makes the little decisions.” “Really?” I responded. “Does that really work?” “Oh, yes,” he said proudly. “66 years, and so far, not ONE big decision!”

Bathurst Photo News December, 2010

snapshot Words and portrait by David Dixon

POP CuLTuRE AFICIONADO LINDSAY GALE WILL GO ALL THE WAY TO TIMBukTu FOR A GOOD MuSIC EVENT — LITERALLY.

Lindsay Gale’s 30-year musical journey; with Hot August Night all the way.

LindSay’S 30-yeaR muSiCaL jouRney; FROM JOHN DENVER TO TIMBukTu Celebrating 30 years as owner of Stop’n’Rock Bathurst, Lindsay has never had any other career and lives for his work. “He even takes holidays to go to musical events,” long-time colleague and store manager Justin Williams says; joking about Lindsay’s African odyssey. “The event was three-and-a-half hours outside of Timbuktu in Mali for a ‘Festival in the Desert’,” Lindsay reminisces. It was a cultural/musical exposition by the Tuareg, a nomadic tribe. It was about three year’s ago and it was a great experience of life.” The event was a world away from Lindsay’s start in Bathurst as a casual employee while at school with a couple of old-style record shops that covered the full-spectrum of musical tastes. “It ranged from Abba to Neil Diamond to John

Denver. If you wanted anything else, you did without.” Marketing Stop’n’Rock as “Where Music Really Matters”; the store is an eclectic mix of music, pop culture, movies, and memorabilia. And if they don’t already have it; Lindsay and Justin will do anything to chase it down. If for instance, you urgently need an obscure film soundtrack for your son’s HSC studies, Stop’n’Rock will get it for you. “We do a lot of importing,” Justin explains. “We pride ourselves on chasing stuff to the ends of the earth. If you can’t get it here, you can’t get it, we’re like a dog with a bone. “We get people who move away to Sydney and still order here, they say ‘you’re still the best store’,” he said. Many of these journeys around the musical

world cost more in time and money than the resulting profit for the item. “You’re not going to do this at a big chain; one, they don’t care, two, it’s simply not worth their while,” Lindsay said. Lindsay and Justin’s own musical tastes are exceedingly catholic and range from rock, blues, to country cross-over. “We never try to ‘diss’ (disrespect) anyone for their musical stuff. You simply can’t write a genre off,” Lindsay said. The store ranges from the usual top 40 CDs, one-off designer t-shirts, rock books, to novelty miniature musical equipment. “We like to think of ourselves as an oasis in the desert of music.” Lindsay has seen a whole range of technology come and go, ranging from turntables, vinyl and tape cassettes, to such technological cul-de-

sacs as super audio CDs, laser disks, VHS, Beta, to digital audio tapes. And the big sellers over the intervening 30-years since the Electric Light Orchestra were top of the pops? The old favourites; Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Australia’s own AC/DC and Slim Dusty. Like most in the industry, Lindsay is concerned for the future with i-tunes, downloads, MP3s and iPods by-passing the old-style record stores. “I hope there’ll still be a place for a record shop. But it is tough times, there’s no doubt about that.” With a love of music and about 20,000 items in store ranging from old vinyl records to miniature speakers, Lindsay has surprisingly little memorabilia in his own home. “This is my collection,” he said.

It Is belIeved that sunny Corner, 27km east of bathurst, got its name from two drovers, Charlie and Will scott, who came across the area while droving sheep from Rydal to Capertee in the early 1850s. Apparently there was an area of ground that always seemed to have the sun shining on it and the drovers decided to camp on that little sunny corner, which gave rise to the name. A gold lease was taken up in 1865 but did not prove very successful. this led to the establishment of a small open cut

operation but with little gold won. this was repeated about three years later with more success. the ore would have been rich in silver as this was on top of the major silver lode which became the sunny Corner silver Mines several years later. the gold work continued until the early 1880s when the focus was shifted to the abundant silver. Winning of the silver was made much more successful with the establishment of an American designed and made smelter at sunny Corner. the mines were worked from 1884 to 1922 with about 3.5 million ounces obtained, along with more than

8,800 ounces of gold and 1,452 tons of copper. A village was surveyed in 1884 and it was not long before more permanent housing, along with shops, hotels, churches, post office, schools, two banks, a police station and a court house were established. the village was first known as ‘Mitchell’ but the name was changed to ‘sunny Corner’ in 1887. the decline of mining in the early 20th Century also saw the decline of the village, with this photo taken in about 1921. today there is little evidence of the village or of sunny Corner’s mining past.

Bathurst District Historical Society Living history is much more than just stewardship of Bathurst Museum for members of the Bathurst District Historical Society. With 250-members and the world-class museum located in the east wing of the Court House, the club is one of the most dynamic and active historical society’s of any in country NSW. “Bathurst is extremely fortunate to have such a unique history, it was our first inland settlement,” Club Vice President Alan McRae explained. While most people know of the Society through their enthusiastic volunteering in the Museum, the Club offers much more including their ‘Monthly Musters’. “The Monthly Muster’s aim is to have interesting and historically-aimed speakers, locals, researching their particular area, such as miners in the Turon, or the settlement at Kelso,” he said. “We also have outings twice a year with up to 60-people and we will go to some other historical town; we went to Gulgong last month,” Alan said. For Pixie Lincoln and Marg Morris, volunteering at the Museum offers the opportunity to meet many likeminded visitors. “I love the people, the stories, we get people in here from all around the world,” Marg said. “Being new to Bathurst, it gives you a motive to find out about the town. Bathurst is living history, and working here brings it all alive,” Pixie said. Single Membership is $15; Family Membership $24. First year joining fee is $16. Museum hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday 10–4pm. Old Government Cottage Monthly Musters are the third Thursday each month starting at 7.30pm with a guest speaker. For more information, phone 6332 4755 during museum hours.

Stressful times – take a chill pill … There’s always lots of tension around the place at this time of year. The students from Year 7 to Year 10 have their end of year examinations, the Year 11s (or ‘new’ Year 12s, as they like to be called) have their first assessment items, the primary kids are off to their outdoor education camps, and … worst of all, the staff are all busily marking exams and writing reports. Stress – it can do funny things to you. Some people go all quiet and become withdrawn, others become loud and rowdy and others just like to be left alone to get their jobs done. Everyone deals with these high pressure times in their own different ways, and sometimes you’ve got to be careful how you tread – both teachers and students, because a wrong move or poorly chosen word can see you get in the firing line. In most cases, the stressful situations see people (both young and old) blow off a bit of steam and then get on with the task at hand. I’m hoping my stress levels over the next 2 or 3 weeks might be a bit lower than usual, as I’m in a bit of a lucky situation this year for a teacher. The only classes I taught in 2010 were Year 12 classes (and they’ve all finished!) so for the first time ever in my working life, I don’t have either marking to do or reports to write at the end of the year. My colleagues are busy setting exams, writing suggested responses and solutions as well as getting things in order for the report writing process. As those of you who receive reports in the mail on your kids could imagine, this is a massive procedure which takes tens of hours of work – writing hundreds of thoughtful, meaningful and appropriate comments, personalised and relevant to every child occupies your every waking thought for weeks! Meanwhile the students, in a constant state of yellow alert, are (or should be!) presently flogging themselves in study for the exams – summaries, review sheets, online practices, ‘mock’ rehearsal essays and of course past exams, until it’s all over. It’s a pretty hard ask for the students (of age 12 to 17) to give of themselves totally to this kind of review and exams for a couple of weeks – but the sense of achievement they’ll get from giving things a red hot go is well worth it in the end. So – we are ALL stressed – but we have to remember that all of those around us have the same issues, too. Taking a chill pill, a deep breath, and making the most of down time are three important things to keep in mind at the moment. “If you don’t chew my head off, then I won’t chew yours off” is the way to go. Good luck to the kids in their exams, and safe travelling to the teachers with their marking and reports. The end is in sight!

Combined Year 6 Bathurst Public School Pictures by KIKI HOPCRAFT

This week Photo News was lucky enough to snap some shots of the Year 6 classes of Bathurst Public School. This rowdy bunch has been getting ready for their end of year, Year 6 dinner and disco dance, to celebrate the end of their primary education. They have finished their exams for the year, and are looking forward to their Year 7 orientation day, coming up in the second week of December. We wish them all the very best with their first year of high school next year!

Bathurst Photo News December, 2010

Hey Hubbers I, Little g, would like to proclaim that the festive season... has begun! Woo-hoo! Other than general silliness, there are a few important things about the festive season that we shouldn’t forget.

w i t h li t t l e g

• Kool and the Gang actually had something when they told us to ‘ceelleebrratte good times, come on!’ – we might be celebrating under the guise of ‘New Years’, but what we’re really celebrating is the good times we’ve had and the good times we’re going to keep on having. So celebrate your memories and the memories you’re going to keep on making. • The end of the year is looming, there’s no better time than ever to go up to that hottie you’ve been drooling over all year and say ‘you know what – I think you’re really smokin!’ In fact, I hereby declare that everyone is given an ‘embarrassing rejection leave pass’. You can still get rejected, but if you do then you can still be happy with yourself because you put it out there, you’re no wuss!

• This is the time of year where you’re allowed to be indulgent! Eat that extra piece of cake, buy yourself a present for no reason and go to a Christmas party every weekend! It’s alright, it’s the festive season!

• Although the festive season often finds you meeting new people (and that’s good) the main purpose of the festive season is to look back at your year, the friends you’ve made and the relationships that have grown strong and go... ‘hey, I love you guys!’ So go forth to your festive celebrations, but don’t forget... it’s time to come together. It’s up to you. What’s your pleasure? Everyone around the world. Come on. It’s a celebration. Little g

What’s your style? Wow, that’s difficult to say. If I had to put my style into words I’d say I’d be 40% ‘no pants’, 59% ‘deranged’ with a splash of creamed cheese. What are your favourite labels? I’m glad you asked! Boch do a really great stainless steel alloy 20cm soup spoon that would DEFINITELY be in my top 5. Oh, laBELS? I thought you said ladles. photo: central west photo news/Grace Johns

Where would we find you on a Saturday Night Have you checked under the pillows on the sofa? I’m always in the last place you look. What are you into at the mome? There’s this girl I really like, but I don’t have the cojones to ask her out. I guess I’ll just have to make do with men! What’s on your ipod right now? I just did a mashup of Royksopp’s ‘You Don’t Have a Clue’ with Paul Simon’s ‘Slip Sliding Away’. It sounds really awful! I think I need to find a new hobby
