GOES GREEN Macquarie Village residents Laura Hodges and Hayley Westoby contributed to the planting of 1690 trees across Charles Sturt University campuses. Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange and Wagga Wagga were involved in a Biodiversity Blitz, a program run by CSU Green. CSU aims to have 20% of university land contributing to increasing biodiversity by 2015.

“We just wanted to help out the environment, make CSU a better looking place and to provide more oxygen to our fellow peers”, says Laura. “We use so much paper printing our assignments, we thought we’d help plant some more paper”, added Hayley. WITH ELISABETH CARTER Hi friends After chatting with many Bathurst businesses and meeting many new faces I have received plenty of encouraging compliments on the progress of the Bathurst Extra. You are now reading the fourth issue, and hopefully our best issue to date! One lady summed it all up stating that the paper was ‘something you actually want to pick up and read’. This was very encouraging to hear as it reflects exactly what the paper aims to promote; everything great about Bathurst!

One great thing I would highly recommend experiencing is the current Bathurst Regional Art Gallery exhibition (until the 23rd Sept).

This Exhibition features the new body of work by local digital media artist, Nicole Welch, entitled Illumination. The work of well-known Australian abstract artist, David Aspen is also on display and is well worth checking out!

If art isn’t your thing; how does the Bathurst Farmers Markets (25th Aug) sound? Or maybe grabbing the family and heading out to the Burraga Sheep Show and Country Fair (25th Aug) sounds more your thing?

And….probably most important; don’t forget Father’s day (or Grandfather’s day!). Sometimes actions speak louder than gifts or words, but they also work well together! Sounds like a great reason to go shopping!

Over 175 students visited the fields with teachers and students making a gold coin donation to support children’s medical research.

Vietnam Veterans day by leilaNi VaKaahi THIS year sees the 50th anniversary of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War where 521 lost their lives and 3129 were injured.

To commemorate this, Bathurst and District Vietnam Veteran’s Association is holding a wreath laying service, dinner and parade on August 18 and 19.

The commemorative weekend will begin with a wreath laying service at the carillon in Kings Parade, Bathurst at 10.30am Saturday, followed by a special dinner at Bathurst RSL. The association is inviting all members of the community to attend with Dick Johnson, a World War II prisoner of war, guest

On Sunday, the Vietnam Veterans will take part in a parade beginning at 10.30am at Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Park located on Boundary Road, Bathurst. The park is maintained by Bathurst and District Vietnam Veteran’s Association.

The Association invites the entire community to commemorate Vietnam Veteran’s Day, formerly known as Long Tan Day, on the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War and the 46th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Association member Bob Triming is proud to say that the weekend will remember those who’ve fought for their country.

FOR A LAUGH As he drove into a parking lot, John noticed that a pickup truck with a dog sitting behind the wheel was rolling toward a female pedestrian. The pedestrian seemed oblivious, so John hit his car horn to get her attention.

The pedestrian looked up just in time to jump out of the way of the truck’s path, and thebvehicle bumped harmlessly into the curb and stopped.

John rushed to the woman’s side to see if she was all right. “I’m fine,” she assured him, “but I hate to think what could have happened to me if that dog hadn’t honked.”

If Australia continues down the road it’s on with our current industrial relations policies, growing job losses is the likely outcome.

The majority of people reading this will disagree with me and there’s a very good reason why. Most would be people who work for wages and would not have the faintest appreciation of what it’s like to be an employer. It also doesn’t help that those making the decisions on industrial relations policies are probably themselves employees.

Politicians, judges, public servants and all those who sit on panels that decide anything to do with industrial relations are all paid by taxpayers so it’s hard to imagine that they could fully appreciate anything from an employer’s standpoint.

Employers are definitely in the minority and the policies they have to work with are not doing them any favours. I have no doubt that in the fullness of time, the outworking of the current policies will come home to roost and it won’t be the employers who are to blame. You can’t keep biting the hand that feeds you and not expect something to give.

The real issue however, is one no one is talking about, ‘profit’. Business owners who are employers must be allowed to make fair and reasonable profits from their businesses and the only way this can happen is while ever they have the freedom to run the business the way they need to. Under the present system, unions or workers think it’s OK for them to tell a business owner how they should run their business. This is crazy, really crazy but much more than that, it’s grossly unfair yet the authorities seem content to let them.

Let me use our farmer’s plight to further demonstrate what happens when the wrong people control the strings.

Irrespective of what we’re told by the big supermarket chains, I think it’s fair to say that most of us believe our farmers and producers are being totally screwed by the supermarkets. By screwed, I mean the system is such that the supermarkets are virtually holding our farmers and producers over a barrel. It’s not hard to imagine the situation where a farmer is told by the supermarkets, “we’ll buy so many of whatever you produce for so much over the next 12 months but every item you supply has to conform to our standards and we’ll only pay you this price, take it or leave it.”

The supermarkets would call this negotiation and say the farmer ultimately has the choice to take it or leave it. The problem is, the prices offered to the farmer are so low, it’s virtually impossible for him to make a reasonable or even satisfactory profit for his work and he has few other options. That is simply not fair and I’m sure most people believe that this is exactly what’s happening. Getting to the truth of the matter is also impossible because farmers won’t speak out for fear of reprisal and supermarkets just keep sending around the spin that says consumers are the winners. Maybe so, but for how long?

Exactly the same thing is happening with industrial relations. In the same way supermarkets have screwed down the profit making potential of our farmers, Unions, Fair Work Australia and the Federal Government have screwed down the profit making potential of employers and business owners, etc. to the point when many simply can’t function any more.

Such policies can only lead to increasing job losses and like I said, it won’t be the employer’s fault.

Group member Thomas Druitt said “Sick of the lack of opportunity for people wanting to make films in the region, we have come together and decided to take the initiative, create the opportunities ourselves and just start filming! Our goal is to provide regional filmmakers with the opportunity to practice, hone and share their craft, in order to create films of a professional quality.”

Elisabeth will be our face in Bathurst and as such she’ll be filling a number of roles including looking after any advertising enquiries from businesses in Bathurst.

Elisabeth is a bit of a rookie but she’s a pretty smart and savvy young lady and she’s as keen as mustard, she also has a fabulous team backing her up so there’s no worries about her learning quickly or delivering the goods.

Our Bathurst Extra is not out to set the world on fire in the first few months but we are keen to provide Bathurst with something they can enjoy and be proud of each month.

Silver Service: Silver plated student presentation trophies from 1911-1912.

Peter Nakitch, Librarian at Bathurst college is excited to be heading up the history project that is leading to some interesting discoveries.

“When people move or clear out their office, items get cleared away into cupboards or store rooms and can be forgotten,” Peter said. “they don’t perceive the historic value of an item, but don’t want to throw it away so they put it in a box at the back of a cupboard. the aim of the project is to find these items, protect them and put them on display for everyone to enjoy.”

Some of the items that have been found so far include: • college management meeting minute books from 1930’s to 1970’s that provide a snap shot of the education programs being offered at the taFe college and how these met the needs of industry at the time, and how the college engaged with the Bathurst community

• Silk flowers from the 1950’s created by one of the students and the tools and materials used to make them • two silver plated presentation trophies from 1905-1909; and 1911-1912 that were awarded to students • VhS video tape of college events from the 1970’s to the 2000’s, including tV news segments • copies of ‘a quarter century of technical education in New South Wales’ (published in 1909, Bathurst technical college is discussed on pages 286-291) • Numerous photographs (and some negatives) from the 1950’s through to the 1990’s • a small number of graduation programs from the 1970’s.

• 1 meter x 1.5 meter marble memorial plaque in memory of teacher, and erected by students and staff from 1893.

The Public can view the display at the Bathurst Campus Library on Monday to Thursday from 8:30am to 6:00pm.

New York here I come!

BY LEILANI VAKAAHI Bathurst local Andrew Dean has been learning music from a young age. Now, one year out from finishing his degree in exercise science/ rehabilitation at CSU, he’s set his sights on New York where he hopes to expand his music career after graduation.

Andrew started out playing piano but was introduced to guitar in his first year of high school at All Saints. Since then, the talented twenty two year old has played gigs both locally and in Sydney and is currently a member of the Mitchell Conservatorium’s guitar ensemble Fretworx.

“I play acoustic and electric guitar, slide guitar, harmonica and sing. My favourite instrument is open tuned acoustic guitar,” he said.

Andrew has played solo and alongside his sister Esther, friends David Heath, Ryan Sanders, Trent Cast, Matt Boylan-Smith and more all over Bathurst including at the Kings Hotel, Schnitzel Bar and Church Bar.

and Sam Reid have recently started a band. And although they’re still throwing a few names around, they will definitely be a group to watch.

“I enjoy playing at Church Bar on a Sunday arvo in summer or the Kings on a busy Saturday night. Everywhere’s different but good,” says Andrew.

See Tim Miller’s work at Fox’s Gallery TIM Miller’s work is really something. His use of subtle light and rolling hills allows the viewer to enter the scene and experience a calming tranquillity. Tim Miller was born in 1952 in Wellington and currently has public and private collections both in Australia, (The National Museum of Australia and Parliament House), and all over the world. He paints in pastels and oils on both small scale and large scale works.

Tim has also taught at the prestigious Julian Ashton Art School as well as conducted several workshops at other schools and universities.

“Tim Miller is a masterful painter and draughtsman. His understanding of light and the influences of light on colour is quite remarkable, and to my mind, place him alongside only a handful of artists who have interpreted the Australian landscape in a unique and convincing way.” (N. Leavey, Salisbury Atelier) I couldn’t agree more; but don’t take my word for it!

Bathurst is fortunate enough to be able to view and purchase Tim Miller’s work at Fox’s Furniture & Woodwork Gallery until the end of August. TrigeneraTion: A consumer’s answer to spiralling energy prices Like many Australians, especially those of us in rural centres, Orange accountant Dan Fock recently took a good look at how much money he was forking out for household electricity.

B

eing an accountant, he didn’t just look at the current energy price spiral in NSW – largely the result of massive investment to “gold-plate” the state’s electricity network to prepare it for sale, but what it would likely cost him to power and heat his home over the next ten years.

“I did my numbers,” he says, “having lived in Sydney and now settled and developing a business in Orange.

“All I could think was what the hell’s happened to power bills?”

Allowing for his home in west Orange, running the business from the residence, plus lighting, heating, hot water, computers, home entertainment and three daughters under nine years old, then factoring in 10 percent per year for price rises, Dan estimated it was going to cost him around $119,263 for household energy over the next decade.

“That’s too much. I can’t cope with that,” he decided, especially since he needs to run his business, Fox International, from home.

So he went searching for cheaper, more sustainable, alternative energy sources.

It’s something that many people across the nation are going to have to do in the coming years as the privatised state energy grids gouge more and more money out of consumers while offering a power supply system that’s archaic, inefficient and requiring tremendous capital reinvestment and modernisation.

Being almost completely dependent on coal as its fuel, the entire national network is also our biggest polluter, producing more than 30 percent of the nation’s carbon emissions – and that means more investment, and more price increases, to reduce carbon levels.

It’s estimated that it’s going to cost around $45 billion over the next five years to upgrade and maintain the national grid—money that, again, we’ll have to cough up as consumers.

In the current five-year regulatory cycle, the NSW electricity system’s spending on modernisation has gone up more than 80 percent or $7 billion in energy transmission and over 60 percent or a whopping $35 billion in distribution.

Translated into household electricity prices, although monitored and controlled by the state’s Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART), we’ve seen our electricity bills spiral by 70 percent over the past five years, with another 18 percent rise due in the coming financial year.

And while the newly privatised energy suppliers would love to find something other than corporate profitability to blame it on, IPART has estimated that the dreaded carbon tax, which came into force on July 1, is contributing to only $8 of that $18 price hike.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says it’s received only 630 complaints and enquiries about the carbon tax in relation to electricity and gas bills in the first 10 days since it was introduced, compared with 8,000 general complaints – hardly the massive deluge that was being predicted by anti-carbon tax politicians and campaigners before July 1.

It’s estimated that at least threequarters of our electricity bills are taken up by the massive cost of modernising the state’s dilapidated distribution network—the power poles, pylons and wires that Transgrid, the state-owned energy corporation, owns and, as market logic decrees, must be upgraded to bring . in the highest price possible when it’s auctioned.

Yet there’s more than a suspicion among the energy industry watchers and even IPART that modernisation costs, and consumer price rises to pay for them, are being over-inflated.

Hence the industry’s new buzzword, “gold-plating” —fattening Transgrid’s capital reserves for potential buyers.

All this has provided a backdrop of impending crisis, if you like, to Dan Fock’s search for a much better and more

equitable energy solution.

The road he took had its twists and turns, but it eventually brought him to a revolutionary stand-alone, offgrid energy generation system called Trigeneration.

To envision Trigeneration, first imagine today’s monstrous, archetypal NSW power plant, gorging furiously on coal from the Hunter Valley, belching greenhouse gas that’s got most of us fearing for the future of our environment.

Then compare this with a typical Trigeneration plant. It can be as small and portable as a shipping container. It can use natural or renewable gas to produce electricity and constant hot water for heating. And, for households, it now comes in a size that’s roughly that of an average dishwasher.

And this is how Dan discovered it.

He says he looked at household solar energy first, but found that it’s too expensive now that the NSW Government has dumped Solar Bonus Scheme, with its 60c/KWh feed-in tariffs—60 cents for each kilowatt hour of electricity fed into the state power grid.

“I found that with the feed-in tariff as

it now stands, I’d be burning solar power at a rate of 30 cents a kilowatt hour at home while getting only six cents a kilowatt hour for electricity that I fed into the grid—and that’s on a good day.

“Also, solar energy systems only generate electricity for five to eight hours a day, when it’s daylight.

“Where it fails is in after-hours storage —where am I going to put all the excess electricity that it’s produced during the day?

“The problem with solar energy is failed battery technology, and the cost.

I eventually found a 24-to-30 kilowatt battery storage system, but it costs $12,000.

“If I fed all that energy into the grid, I calculated I would be doing it at a 24cent loss per kilowatt hour, rising to 40 and 50 cents in the future.”

Dan says he looked at wind power as a possible alternative—checking out small wind turbines that are now on the market for home or business use.

“But the council won’t allow turbines in residential areas—it says they’re too noisy and there’s not enough wind—in Orange of all places!”

CONTINUED So he looked next at geothermal energy systems which take ambient heat from under the ground to warm buildings. Yet as anyone who’s watched the British homebuilding series, “Grand Designs” on the ABC will know, that requires complete i nsulation of the building—an air-tight environment in fact—to work efficiently.

And efficient insulation of homes is one area in which Dan Fock says Australia is 10 to 15 years behind North America and Europe in energy sustainability.

“Most Australian homes generally have no insulation at all,” he says. “In the temperate areas homes are frigid in winter and stifling at the height of summer.

“In Canada and Europe they insulate their homes completely, even the walls, while we often just insulate the ceiling.

“It’s my opinion that the governments and local councils should set regulations way above the standard on household and office insulation.”

We’re backward in heating applications too, says Dan, comparing energyhungry reverse cycle fan heating with hydronic heating in the USA. Hydronic may sound “new age” but Dan says it’s the most efficient heating medium we have, and it’s been used for many decades.

“It’s simply the old radiator system, full of hot water that’s constantly cycled and recycled through the network of pipes and reheated when necessary.”

TAFE in Orange runs a hydronic system—hot water distributed through pipes and radiators—and describes it as a “great system—environmentally clean and nothing wrong with it at all.”

Dan says a household hydronic system would cost between $10,000 and $15,000 to install.

But then, there’s still the question of the cost of electricity to heat and pump the water.

It was when Dan looked into co-generation and Trigeneration systems that he found what he wanted, but it took a lot of searching, and a few surprises, to track this revolutionary product down.

Both systems are independent electricity generators that are, in fact, miniaturised power stations that don’t burn fuel by combustion—the power is generated by ceramic fuel cells—and therefore don’t produce greenhouse gases either.

Fed on natural gas or waste gas, they provide up to 60 or even 85 percent efficiency in electricity generation, compared with the 30 percent capability of conventional coal-powered plants.

As we’ve said, they come in sizes that compare with a standard shipping container and are being used all over the world, including Sydney, to power individual or clusters of buildings or streets.

They’re called Trigeneration units because they not only generate electricity, but use the waste heat involved in that process to produce hot water for heating or air-conditioning.

Dan eventually came across BlueGen, a trigeneration unit for households and

The surprise came when he found BlueGen is an Australian product, developed by a Melbourne company called Ceramic Fuel Cells Pty Ltd, but is manufactured in Germany and the Netherlands and is sold in Western Europe, including the UK. .

Why? “It’s a travesty of justice,” Dan says. “Ceramic Fuel Cells can’t afford to make the systems in Australia.

“If the Germans can make them cheaper than we can, we’d better look out for our industry generally. ”They can make BlueGen cheaper there because the governments actually subsidise alternative energy innovations, while we’re cutting back on support here.”

Dan has found that he can install a BlueGen generator and accompanying hydron system providing hot water in his house for a total $69,628 Taken over 10 years, compare that with the $119,263 he’s estimated it would cost him for conventional electricity supply—from the NSW grid, that

is—and it’s obvious that he’s found a revolutionary means of drastically reducing electricity and heating costs that should appeal to homes and businesses throughout Australia.

Yet it’s not appealing at all.

“I wrote to {NSW MP for Orange} Andrew Gee telling him about the BlueGen system and suggesting it’s something that the state government should subsidise or support,” says Dan, “and he replied in words to the effect that ‘we can’t be funding all these things’.

“Yet the state government has a declared policy of reducing our carbon footprint.

“Orange City Council’s not interested in BlueGen either.”

Dan says he feels the only way that Trigeneration and products like BlueGen are going to get through to the public is by attrition—“Why not five people in Orange adopting it, then 10 people, then more and more, over say a 15 year project?”

It’s all a matter, he says, of sitting down and seriously doing the numbers.

This timely and informative feature has been presented as a thought provoker at a time when many people are looking for ways to reign in every rising power bills.

Fans of the Irish group Celtic Woman will enjoy their latest DVD titled Believe. The venue, staging, songs and a few unexpected surprises make this one their best DVD’s ever.

Several years ago a Queensland dry cleaner developed one that was an absolute winner. It was called the Marathon Ironing Board cover. Sadly he stopped making them a few years back and many people who have finally worn there Marathon out are still struggling to find one as good.

SIMPLY SWEET

Well, this may help. We discovered one at Spotlight in Bathurst called a Sass ironing board cover. It’s not a Marathon but it does have several of the features that made a Marathon so good. A pull cord, Velcro strips and heavier fabric. Cost is about $25.

Weight Watchers has a simple sweet that diet minded people may enjoy. It’s their single Sticky Date puddings and you’ll find them in the freezer cabinet at the supermarket. It’s rather nice, even on its own.

There’s a lot to like about the Sass version so if you’ve had it up to your neck with useless ironing board covers, this one is well worth a look.

FUN MOVIE A movie from the local video shop that will give you a laugh is We Bought a Zoo starring Matt Damon. It’s not a classic by any means, but it’s pleasant entertainment.

It’s definitely novel and is the flavour of the month at the moment.

By Mark Sutton Why are marriages under such pressure? Why is the divorce rate so high?

The Bible tells us it is because we don’t relate rightly to one another; because we don’t follow the natural order of things as God created them.

It is fundamental to all things that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All three are God, and all three are equal. But there is also order and authority among the three persons who make up the one God (what we call the Trinity). That there is order and authority in this most perfect of relationships is clear, for instance, when Jesus the Son says ‘the Father is greater than I’, and in the sending of the Holy Spirit by the Father and the Son. The earthly relationship that is most similar to that between Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is marriage. And here the Bible again tells that while husband and wife are equal, there is order in the relationship. The Bible writer Paul says that husbands are head over their wives, just as Christ is the head over all of us. But husbands are told to ‘love their wives as Christ loved us’. That is, like Christ, they are to put their wives first.

But wives don’t submit to their husbands as they should, and nor do husbands put their wives first, as they 28 should. If they did, our marriages would be in much better shape.

SCHOOL’S IN WITH PAUL TIERNEY

Give Them Ownership Kids love to go against the grain, but let them ‘think’ they’re in charge, and they’ll take a path of much less resistance.

I guess it’s in the nature of everyone. If someone barks an order at you expecting a task to be accomplished immediately and without discussion, we are all much less likely to respond with enthusiasm, cooperation and a 110% effort.

This would be particularly true of teenagers, I suggest. This is even evident when the suggestion given is the correct or logical one—kids will just deliberately do the ‘opposite’ thing (often for reasons only known to them), just to buck the system.

Junior sports coaches know how to deal with this better than most. They will employ every tactic to keep their team passionate - from having a leadership committee amongst players and team members, through to an input discussion meeting and game analysis on Monday after the weekend match are sure fire ways of giving some ownership to the team. In most cases, coaches are clever enough to know that what they want is still the best, but can get their points across in special ways that make the kids think that THEY thought of the ideas! For example, telling a rugby team that a shortened lineout is going to occur against an opposition team, will have little or no success in being embraced (or used as a tactic) by a team; but use a discussion to get the team to see the merits of such a tactic (through video, diagrams, or watching the Wallabies do it), and they’ll ‘come up’ with the idea themselves!

We’re doing the harder stuff in Surface Area, Volume and Capacity at the moment in class, and it’s pretty hard to get the students to see the beauty of this magical part of mathematics. They want to know the formulas, do the questions, punch in the numbers, and get it over with. Yet I set them a homework task which involved coming up with their own word problem involving the formulas and concepts we’ve covered. The brief was to be original and spectacular, and a fully-worked solution was to accompany the problem. I was very pleasantly surprised by how much the class embraced this task. They all came up with their own original ideas, ranging from the amount of icing needed for a two-tiered circular wedding cake, to the cost of materials for a spherical cricket ball, and whether the leftovers from a curry, cooked in a cylindrical pot, would fit into a rectangular plastic container. Brilliant! So, they fell for the ‘trick’. They worked really hard on their questions, had true ownership of their mathematical destiny so to speak, and I’d argue most of them will be masters of this topic when we assess them at the end of the term. Yet this open-ended kind of task won them over, as opposed to barking a piece of homework at them from the text. I suppose we could put all of these gems together and made up a mini-chapter—then they’d really own it!

There was music playing and friends were chanting as they supported each other on the field. From running to long jump, discus and shot put, everyone was doing their part for their sports house. Trivia for Breastfeeding

BY LEILANI VAKAAHI Saturday July 28 saw over $1400 raised by the australian Breastfeeding association Bathurst at their fundraising trivia night which will be put towards training counselors for the group. the australian Breastfeeding association is an organization which aims to provide accurate and helpful advice and support to mothers all over australia. the Bathurst group recently began operating again and is trying to raise funds to allow more support to be accessed by mothers in the local area.

“Bathurst currently has 2 qualified breastfeeding counselors and we need to train more,” says fundraising organizer Elisa Miller. “the counselors are volunteers so funds raised will be going towards training more people to a certificate 4 level”.

the australian Breastfeeding association Bathurst group was delighted with the turnout on the trivia night and from all reports, the night was enjoyed by all who attended.

“It was a lot of fun,” Eliza said. “Everyone enjoyed themselves. It was a very successful night”. all five prizes were taken out on the night by teams, with thanks given to Gorgeousness Boutique, Books Plus, Nestle Purina, toys and tots, Cheeky Kids Boutique, Edith Schoolhouse Bed and Breakfast and Bathurst rSL. as well as providing support and information about breastfeeding, the australian Breastfeeding association also gives advice about sleeping, feeding, and many other issues that mothers may need. the aBa Bathurst meets on the first Monday and third thursday of each month. to find out more information please call 6337 2667.

Outlook Respite Centre is a service that provides respite for carers of those with a mental illness, intellectual disability, autism and acquired brain injury. They operate a Men’s group every Wednesday between 9am-3pm and a Women’s group every Thursday between 9am-3pm.
