Hi friends! Our daughter came for a visit recently and while she was here I talked her into being a Page 3 Girl. Sandy’s always on for a bit of fun so she happily agreed. Catch her on page 3 and yes I know what you’re going to say, she doesn’t get her good looks from her Dad. Our new website is gaining both momentum and character as we develop it. We’ve just added new Gallery and News sections. The Gallery will feature additional photos from the events we cover and the News section provides us with a means to communicate other not so public information to our readers and advertisers, more like a newsletter. Check it out at www.myphotonews. com.au Don’t forget to nominate people in our community for the Rotary Club of Orange Calare’s Community and Vocational Awards. Go to the club’s website www. orangerotary.com.au or contact Graeme Eggleston at geg88281@bigpond.net.au for nomination forms. With the launch of our new website, we’re also refining our distribution. For quite some time now we have been delivering Photo News to a number of roadside mailboxes around Orange and also to all homes in Blayney. We did this as a special service to these folk but now feel it is no longer necessary. It has also been quite expensive to provide this service. Photo News can be read in full on our website each week www. myphotonews.com.au and is still available from over 100 places around Orange and neighbouring towns. People in Blayney can pick up their free copy each week from the local IGA or local newsagent in Blayney from around mid Thursday morning. Call Samantha at our office on 6361 3575 to ask where your nearest Photo News outlet is located.

Taking the sting out of diabetes Did you know that one person is diagnosed with diabetes every seven minutes? Tomorrow, Friday September 17 is Diabetes Buzz Day, which is held all across Australia every year. One of the lesser known charity days, the event aims to raise funds to help improve the health and enhance the lives of people living with or at risk of diabetes. More than three million Australians have, or are at risk of diabetes and the rate of type 1 diabetes,

People with diabetes are twice as likely to have cardiovascular disease (heart disease or stroke) and once you are diagnosed with diabetes – it’s with you for life! Diabetes Buzz Day has been a signature fundraising event for diabetes awareness, education, research and advocacy programs for 10 years. If you know someone with diabetes or if you have it yourself, why not participate in the day? It’s as easy as talking with your friends
or co-workers about the topic, or you can buy merchandise and create a buzz by displaying it for people to notice. Thanks to the work in the past, Buzz Day has been able to implement many great projects that have helped to improve health, and enhance the lives of people living with and at risk of diabetes – so this is a great opportunity for locals to do their part. Lets Help Madeline By CHRIS BENNETTS The PeOPLe of Orange have always been great at helping people in need. It’s now time to rally behind one of our newest residents, Madeline McCulloch. Madeline was born with Pierre Robin syndrome, which has left her with a cleft palate that will require surgery at Westmead children’s hospital. The surgery aims to correct Madeline’s associated medical problems which include difficulties breathing and feeding. To help raise funds for costly operations, a

beautiful landscape painting will be up for grabs in a monster raffle. The painting titled ‘Walsh bay’ has been donated by the award winning Sydney artist Fay Joseph. Sandy Felstead of the Orange Base hospital’s Frost ward, urges the people of Orange to lend a helping hand. “It’s just an effort to help Madeline get the best start in life possible. A lot of credit has to go to Bev Allen of the OBh for organising and doing a lot of the work, she approached the artist and got her support.”
Sandy also explained that a photo taken by Bev was the inspiration behind the painting. “Bev actually took the photo that would later become the painting.” The painting will be on display at the Complete Camera house, who is also in support of the cause. The winner of the beautiful painting, valued at $2,200, will be drawn on the 21st November at an exhibition of Fay’s work at Kenna hall. Tickets are available at The Complete Camera house and the Orange Base hospital at $5 each or 3 for $10. Monetary donations can also be made at either location.

We fight, that’s what we do!

By BoB Holland My wife Jackie and I are coming up to our 41st wedding anniversary later this month and over the last week or so my thoughts have been very mindful of that. This week in our paper also, you’ll notice photos from a celebration where a well known local couple have just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Wow! What an achievement. That also got me thinking about our marriage and marriage in general. For people to stay together that long these days seems more the exception rather than the rule. In my case, I’m a hopeless romantic and still love my wife beyond imagination. What is it that keeps people together for so long? That’s an interesting question and when I think about Jackie and me, it becomes even more intriguing.
What is it that keeps people together for so long? Jackie and I are about as opposite as opposites get. I’m the half glass full, she’s the half glass empty. I love the challenges associated with being in business, she hates them. I’m not in any way shy, I’m confident, opinionated, loud and animated at times, the typical Norm at home and I have no shame. Jackie is quiet, highly organised, orderly, thoughtful, reserved, very humble, and although a very good communicator, doesn’t waste her words. I’m also not Robert Redford whereas in my eyes she’s a living doll. She’ll hate me for saying that but she’ll get over it. At times we also fight like cat and dog and despite the fact that more times than not I’m right, I never come out on top when we argue. I think that must be a men from Mars, women from Venus thing. Arguing with each other is not something we enjoy, in fact we both hate it, but it does seem to be a natural part of any married couple’s life together. It took the popular movie Notebook to bring this home to me. Those who know the movie may recall when Noah and Ally met again after the war, they ended up in a heated argument. She blurted out something like “It won’t work, we’re always fighting!” to which he replied “We fight, that’s what we do!” Their love and devotion for each other right to the end was the main theme of this heart-warming, if not sad, movie. Jackie and I, like so many others, have probably had our doubts at times but by God’s grace we’re still deeply in love and committed to each other. At the end of the day, the how or why doesn’t really matter. Loving her the way I do and knowing she loves me is enough. bob@cwpn.com.au

Preserving the past: Bletchington Public School Principle John Willing with the collection of staff photos.
Bletchington staff remembered By CHRIS BENNETTS Bletchington puBlic school has come up with a way to commemorate all the hard working teachers that have passed through the corridors since the school was established in 1956. current staff has established a feature wall that displays staff photos from their 54 year history. principle of Bletchington, John Willing,
said it was important to remember the past “unless you make a deliberate effort to save history, it will be lost.” “the school is going through dramatic changes lately with new buildings etc, so it is important to remember the past as we head into the future.” the collection is yet to be completed, with 14 staff photos still missing. “We have gaps in between the years of 1956 and 1970, if anyone out there has copies
of staff photos from these years it would be great if they could get in contact with the school. there might be staff members from the early days still living in orange who may be able to help out,” Mr Willing said. the collection has come together over the last six weeks, with archived photos from the school’s library providing the backbone. “We retrieved a lot from the archive, and we also copied many from our teacher’s personal collections. it all came together
quickly once the ball started rolling.” Mr Willing said the feature wall has generated a lot of interest with staff, students and visitors. “A lot of people say ‘look at the fashion!’ it’s also interesting to see the staff numbers grow from 6 at the beginning to 40 staff members today.” “it is important to recognise the school’s culture. Bletchington is about the people in it, and those who have come and gone.”
Orange City Council has developed a monthly Youth Award with the aim of recognising and celebrating young people in our community. If you know a young person between 12 and 25 years who has made a significant contribution to the areas of education, community work, sport, culture, the arts or the environment you are invited to complete a nomination form. St Joseph’s Blayney Mini Vinnies
PICTURES: CENTRAL WEST PHOTO NEWS/CHRIS BENNETTS
See, think, do. By CHRIS BENNETTS
President of Mini Vinnies, Jonah nunn, explained what the group’s mission is. “We like to help people by raising money for the poor and stuff” the group let other students know what is discussed at the meetings by writing articles for the school newsletter. “it’s fun because we get to organise stuff for the school and the community” Jonah said. Bernie believes that the skills that the children learn in Mini Vinnies will help them throughout their life “it helps them be aware of social justice and work out how they can contribute to the community, it also teaches them how to communicate and work effectively in groups.” “it’s also something for the kids to do and have ownership over”. the next event that the Mini Vinnies have organised is a crazy hair day which will raise money for the school and the local st Vinnies.
Meeting is in session at st Joseph’s Blayney, when a group of students called ‘the Mini Vinnies’ meet to discuss school matters and organise special fund raising events. Mini Vinnie’s is an initiative developed by st Vincent de Paul society, which is aimed to create awareness among young students about issues that exist around them, whether that is in their community or beyond. st Vinnie’s youth co-ordinator, Bernie novotny, said the students are enthusiastic about being a part of Mini Vinnies. “the basic idea behind the meetings is ‘see, think, Do’. We encourage the children to ‘see’ what is happening around them, ‘think’ about what they can do to help the situation, and finally ‘do’ what needs to be done” she said. everybody in the group has a role to play, with an elected president, vice president, treasurer and even a photojournalist.

Calling for Australia Day Award nominations
Proposed refurbishment: Tonee Taylor and Fiona McKenzie of UnitingCare Ageing outside the Wontama site.
PICTURE: CENTRAL WEST PHOTO NEWS/CHRIS BENNETTS
A rebuild and refurbishment for Wontama Village on the horizon Wontama Village in orange is gearing up for a rebuild and refurbishment after UnitingCare ageing made the decision to reshape the aged care village to ensure the needs of residents are better met for now and in the future. the proposed redevelopment heralds a new era for the Wontama Village which has served older people and their families in the community since its establishment in 1967. the decision to redevelop aligns with the organisation’s ‘inspired Care’ service
approach which focuses on providing opportunities for older people to participate in and develop choices, independence and well-being, no matter what stage of life. Director of UnitingCare ageing, gillian mcFee, said the organisation was committed to providing older people with greater choice and flexibility in care and services available. “this redevelopment means that we will be able to deliver more person-centred care, with older people in orange having more ability to select the types of ser-
vices they want and the settings they are available in. “We want residents in Wontama Village to have more freedom to maintain their independence and well-being.” Jenny Coutts, Regional Director, said “We are really enthusiastic about increasing the range and quality of accommodation we offer the orange community.” ms Coutts continued, “this is also a wonderful opportunity to become a more integral part of the community which will benefit all of our residents and staff.”
Whilst still in the planning stages, the aim is to reshape the existing site, revamp existing accommodation and create additional new lifestyle and care choices. Features proposed for inclusion in the revitalised site are a café, community space, family areas, a more extensive range of accommodation options and refurbishment of the existing accommodation. a development application will be submitted to Council once the planning stages have been finalised.
oRange City CoUnCil is currently calling for nominations for the 2011 australia Day Community awards. the awards are recognition of personal achievement and aim to acknowledge the contribution australians are making to their local communities. mayor John Davis said that people who contribute most to our community should not go unnoticed. “awards are given to australians from all walks of life and it’s this diversity which is the strength of the awards program,” he said. Categories include Citizen of the year, an award that recognises outstanding personal achievement and celebrates the remarkable contributions individuals are making to their community. young Citizen of the year is an award for persons under 25 years of age and is based on outstanding contribution to the community. the Community group of the year and Community event of the year award is given in recognition of the valuable contribution that a special group or event has made during the year. nominations close on november 19, 2010, and forms are available at the East Orange Post Office, Civic Centre and on the council website at www. orange.nsw.gov.au. So get nominating!

My list of most important people By Paul Meeth
PICTURE: CENTRAL WEST PHOTO NEWS/GRACE JOHNS
In our world there have been many VIPs (Very Important People), but who have been the MIPs—the Most Important People—in human history? These are the really key people who have made us what we are today. Who would be on your list? Here is my list: Adam and Eve, then Noah. After them come Abraham, Moses, King David, Jesus and his Apostles Peter and Paul. Just nine in all—not many when you consider the billions of people who have ever lived. Each individual human is important, and a great many (such as Plato, Aristotle, Buddha, Confucius and Mohammed) have been very influential, but the handful on my list are there at the top because they either guaranteed the existence of the human race, or guaranteed God’s wonderful message of salvation would be freely given to that race. Of course Jesus Christ, a direct ancestor of David the King, towers above them all. He is the one who by his death and resurrection guarantees forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who believe in him. He is the ultimate MIP—the Most Important Person of all.

Check your child restraints! Are your child restraints fitted correctly? Injuries that afflict children that have been involved in a car crash can often be avoided when your child restraint is correctly fitted, tightened, and is the right size for your child. OrANGE AND CABONNE Councils’ Local Government road Safety Program wants to help parents and caretakers protect their children by offering free child restraint checks! Local and Statewide research has found that 85% of parents and carers don’t know if their child restraint is safe for their child, but most would like to find out! Glenn Attenborough from Opposite Lock Orange was at Courallie Children’s Centre last Tuesday checking family’s cars. “It’s often tightening issues and we make it so it doesn’t loosen. There are little things you can do that make it easier and better for children,” Glenn told Photo News.
“You should get your child seat checked properly, there’s a reason there are authorised restraint fitters.” Anthea Hamilton-Vaughan from Orange City Council said that they are focusing their efforts at daycares and preschools in Orange and Cabonne especially, as many towns in the area don’t have an authorised fitter. Child restraint checks will be being held for free at Yarrawong Children’s Centre today and at Spring St Children’s Centre on September 22 and 23. They will be held all over Cabonne in upcoming weeks, and you can contact Cabonne Council to find out dates.

Entrepreneur for lunch The Business enTerprise CenTre will host entrepreneur and a business innovator Mike O’hagan as their key note speaker for a small Business success Lunch on Wednesday, 29th september. “For the first 10 years of Mike’s working life he had 35 different employers” Executive Officer of the BeC Bruce Buchanan said. “in Mike’s words “i’m a product of the many really bad, and the few good employers i worked for.” it was this background that helped influence Mike to “do it differently” in business. Mike’s business career started out buying and selling goods as a second-hand dealer. The entrepreneur in Mike surfaced eight years later when he
launched a short distance furniture removal business. This business later evolved into MiniMovers, which today is an innovative market leader growing from an initial investment of $200 and a Ute, to an annual turnover exceeding $30 million with over 450 employees. Mike also sits on various Government committees including a small Business Advisory panel to the Governor of the reserve Bank of Australia, and a term as a Commissioner on the Australian Fairpay Commission, just to name a few. “The BeC Business success Luncheons were developed to give new and existing business owners, managers and their staff the opportunity to hear from successful business leaders who have literally been

there and done that,” Mr. Buchanan said. “Whilst Mike’s background is in Transport & Logistics, his philosophy can be used in every type of business.” “The BeC is committed to trying to help existing businesses continue to grow, and in the uncertainty of current economic times, taking advantage of knowledgeable speakers such as Mike O’hagan can give you an edge in your business,” Mr. Buchanan said. The BeC Business success Lunch is on at the Orange ex-services Club (Coral sea room) on Wednesday, 29th september from 12 noon. Bookings are essential through the BEC on 6362 0448.

Macular Degeneration Awareness Week: 18th — 26th September, 2010 Macular Degeneration (MD) is the leading cause of vision impairment and legal blindness in Australia, affecting 1 in 7 people. The causes of MD are unclear but the known risk factors include uV exposure, ageing and lifestyle factors such as smoking and poor diet. Whilst there is no known cure, early detection is key to slowing the progression of the condition. awareness of MD and regular eye examinations are extremely important says local optometrist , Leesa Jagers. MD affects the macular which is the central part of your retina at the back of the eye. It is responsible for your central, detailed vision allowing you to read, recognise faces, drive and see colours clearly. When the macular is damaged, blurriness or dark spots are experienced in your central vision which makes you rely on your peripheral vision to identify objects by their shapes. some common symptoms and early warning signs include: • Difficulty reading which cannot be corrected by glasses • Difficulty identifying colours • Straight lines appear distorted or bent • Words or letters merge together when reading • Central vision appears blurred or blocked by dark empty spaces

In addition to having your eyes tested regularly, The Macular Degeneration Foundation suggests the following positive lifestyle steps to reduce the risk of MD occurring and to help slow down the progression of the disease. • Avoid smoking • Keep a healthy lifestyle, control your weight and exercise regularly • Eat a healthy well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fish, green leafy vegetables, fresh fruit and nuts and limit your intake of fats • Protect your eyes with quality sunglasses providing maximum UV protection, particularly in younger years If you haven’t had your eyes checked recently or have any questions or concerns about Macular Degeneration or any other eye health issues, please contact Leesa Jagers, Optometrist at

Far more than tea and scones By CHRIS BENNETTS The local country Women’s association (cWa) recently joined branches across the state in a community awareness day, which was established to highlight the variety of work the cWa do. Gail hayden of the cWa Nashdale Branch wanted to dispel any pre-conceived ideas about the cWa. “We have got a reputation for just being tea and scone ladies, but we are far more than that” she said. The cWa is in its 88th year of functioning, and in that time they have raised large amounts of money and supplies for a range of causes.
“one of the things we sponsor is medical research” Gail said. “For the last 3 years we have raised money for cord blood research, statewide we were able to raise $130,000 for that. “We have just started sponsorship for prostate cancer and that will continue for the next 3 years.” The women also lend their support to local issues. “on a local level we have a primary and secondary school public speaking day, which around 300 students from all around the central west compete in. They speak on a variety of subjects and winners go on to represent at intergroup level.”
“We also like to make rugs and donate them to people in need such as the cancer council, anson cottage and retirement villages around town” Gail said. There is also the renowned ‘The land’ cookery competition which always has a strong showing from members who love to cook. The dedicated women also raise money and much needed supplies for needy people overseas, sending school supplies and ‘mother and baby packs’ to Papua New Guinea. The cWa of NSW now has 430 branches and 11,000 members. They are always looking for new members, so if you would like to join then call (02) 9358 2923

Engaged! Congratulations to Kylie Conolly and Glenn Jenkins who got engaged on Sunday, August 8 of this year. When Kylie went out to the movies with a friend, little did she know that Glenn was at home planning for his proposal. As she opened the door she saw their home was lit with candles and Glenn was waiting for her. Glenn presented Kylie with a solitaire diamond on a platinum band engagement ring. Kylie Ann is the eldest daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Conolly. Glenn Nicolas is the youngest son of Adell Finlay and the late Tony Jenkins. Both families wish them every happiness for their future together. The wedding is planned for late next year.

snapshot Words and portrait by Grace Johns
Sewing threads 27-year-old British artist Sarah Terry has been passionate about embroidery for over 10 years, and her enthusiasm for the subject is far from fading. She is a week away from finishing her year-long residency at Kinross Wolaroi School, has her own business and has a promising future of exhibiting ahead. Photo News caught up with her to talk about her art, her time in Orange and her future plans.
S
arah has made quite a name for herself in England as a business owner, artist and art teacher - which all began for her as a 16-year-old at high school. She was doing her GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education), the exam you do in England when you’re 16. Her teacher was into textiles, so her passion helped Sarah to develop her own love for the art form. She then went on to complete her A Levels, the equivalent of our HSC, and finished school - going into an Arts Foundation Course, which is a requirement for doing an arts degree. “In my arts foundation course I got a chance to try all different types of art forms, and so I was determined to try everything else, because I thought ‘well I’ve done textiles for four years, I’ve got to do something else now’,” Sarah told Photo News. “I apparently made the worst animation they’d ever seen. So they said ‘I think you should stick to textiles’ and that’s when I realised it was where my passion and my talent lay.” From there Sarah decided to focus purely on embroidery, and moved on to do a degree in embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University. “I opened my business, Guerrilla Embroidery, in 2007 which was about a year or so after I graduated from my course in embroidery. “It came about really because I started to make things and they were building up around me and I thought that I had better get some outlets to get rid of them – and that’s how the business was born.” It started out as selling a lot of bags and accessories, but not long after, she decided to widen her business by doing workshops and freelance work to focus more on the art making practice. “I realised I’m an artist, not a designer,” Sarah said. “I was just making things that I liked and it wasn’t necessarily what other people wanted to buy product wise.” Now that she was teaching workshops to people in her area, Sarah came to realise her passion for teaching people – and she decided to do a teachers course, which she completed soon before making the move to Orange. “I was actually offered the Artist in Residence position when I was in my final year of my arts degree, because I know two artists who had done it before. At that time it wasn’t really the right time for me to go, so I waited a couple more years and I’d just finished my teacher training last year when I decided it was the perfect job to do afterwards.
So I just came straight away as soon as I graduated. “I arrived here on September 16 last year.” But although Sarah was taking up a teaching job, she made sure that it wouldn’t affect her art making either. She was adamant that there would be a good balance between her own work and working with students, and was lucky enough to be given a day off a week, as well as weekends, to do her art. With that time she was able to come up with the art for her first debut exhibition which just finished at the Orange Regional Gallery, with many of her works inspired by Orange and Australia. “I’ve sourced pretty much all of my fabrics from Orange from the op shops here and I’ve found some great stuff. “It’s really beautiful here – especially during autumn the colours are fantastic. That’s been very inspirational because, as you can see, I like colour!” And with a lot of her ideas coming from nature, Sarah found a lot of inspiration living in the country. “I’m very much inspired by nature; it’s often not just the pretty side of it either. I like that juxtaposition between life and death, beauty and decay and all things like that. “That was kind of a big thing when I got here, because nothing wants to kill you in the UK, but when I got here I thought ‘everything wants to kill me!’ So it was kind of a cathartic process you see, and now I’ve got a huntsman in my bathroom and I don’t mind, it can stay there. It’s just like an eight legged mouse!” Although Sarah has been teaching according to the curriculum, she hasn’t only been in charge of that, she has also shown students that you can make a career out of what you love. “I think one of the reasons Kinross do the artist in residence program - and why I feel it’s important and it works - is because for them they can see people making a living from doing art. I think there have been students in the past that it must have influenced, and I think it’s good for them to realise at least, that if you’re passionate about something you can make it work. “That’s also why I thought it was important that they saw my exhibition because I think they often think I just come here to work with them and that’s it – when I actually go home and work all evening and on weekends as well.” Sarah has provided quite the example of some-
one passionate about their art with her first exhibition, and another one planned next year in Molong which she will send over from England. “I think that I enjoy embroidery because I can make marks into cloth or paper and if I’m not happy with them... I can unpick them and start again. With painting, once you put a mark down it’s almost impossible to erase it. “An overlaying theme with my work is that I work intuitively, and often the materials dictate
what happens. “I also just love the tactile feel of it – the needle passing through the fabric. I can’t explain it – it just brings great joy to me. I really do love it.” Sarah finishes her residency in a week’s time, and she plans to travel around Australia before going back to England in November. Her plans for the future are to either find a teaching placement in New York, or staying in England to dedicate herself full time to Guerilla Embroidery.

Do you sometimes wish you could lose yourself in a fantasy world? Maybe you crave a game that constantly challenges your strategic thinking. If either or both of these things appeal to you then I’ve found you the perfect club. The Orange Warhammer Club is something to see to be believed, I didn’t even know this amazing club existed, but believe me it is alive and kicking. Every second Sunday at the Senior Citizens Centre, in the Woolworths car park, between the hours of 10am and 5pm, you will find Warhammer

enthusiasts ranging in age from young to old battling it out on tabletop miniature war fields with miniature armies. Everyone is welcome to come along and have a look, if you have an army you can join in for only $4, which covers all costs. The club tries to organise a special fantasy event a couple of times a year and also has painting days too, as when you first buy your army they are just a base colour and you can use your artistic flare to your heart’s content. The game works on a points system, each creature is worth a certain amount of points and before each game the members
agree on a set point amount and then each member will select their army to that point value to play with. A 2000 point army war could last between 2 -4 hours. Members can play one on one or join into a much bigger war. So how about it, grab the kids and take them down for a look, you will not be disappointed.

Rich mining heritage at Cadia The Cadiangulong Valley south of orange has a rich mining heritage which continues today in a large scale through the operations of newcrest. Copper, gold and iron ore have been mined on and off at Cadia since the early 1850s. There are several reports of copper being found in the area in 1849 and 1850 but government geologist Samuel Stutchbury is credited with being the first to detect copper in early 1851. he was in the area and about to report news of the discovery when word came through in april about the discovery of Australia’s first payable gold at Ophir.
There are no reports of when mining began but it is believed to have been in the early 1860s with a copper smelter erected soon after. By 1866 there was a population of 600 with a school and a doctor in residence while a second hotel had opened by 1868. a couple of years later low copper prices caused operations to be wound back with patchy small gold and copper operations continuing until the early 20th century. in 1912, when this photo of the engine house was taken, a new blast furnace was installed and the copper mines sprang back to life. The following year 250 men were em-
ployed and mining continued for a few years. in the meantime there was renewed interest in Cadia’s iron ore potential and in 1919 a rail line was opened to Spring hill enabling transportation of ore to lithgow. By 1925 the town had 300 people with a magistrate, school, post office, billiard salon, three boarding houses, hotel, hairdresser, mercer, public hall, butcher, several stores and a bank agency. a drop in production and closure of the lithgow furnaces saw the mine close in 1929. Since then the deposits have been worked on and off until newcrest started operations in 1998.

Quick>> >>NewS Volunteer drivers sought
If you enjoy driving and want to volunteer, you may be the person Cabonne Community Transport is looking for. The transport scheme, designed to help frail aged and transport disadvantaged people, is keen to expand its volunteer driver base, particularly in Canowindra. Community Transport completed a record number of client trips last financial year, undertaking almost 6000 journeys. Cabonne Mayor Kevin Duffy praised the volunteers who have made Community Transport such a success. Mr Duffy said the three Community Transport vehicles, two based in Molong and one at Canowindra, were in great demand throughout the Council area. “Without the enthusiasm and dedication of the volunteer drivers, we could never achieve such a fantastic outcome for the people of Cabonne,” he said. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer driver for the Community Transport scheme can call 1300 302 446.
Mike Whitney from the Weekender interviews Tony Worland from top Millthorpe restaurant, Tonic for a special on the village.
Whits visits with Weekender Television personality and former Test cricketer Mike Whitney made a flying visit to Millthorpe recently as part of a special for his Weekender program. Whitney and his crew visited restaurants, bed and breakfasts, the quilting shop, and historic sites in the village for a feature to broadcast in the coming months.
Working together for real savings An alliance of smaller councils surrounding Orange has achieved savings of almost $800,000 during the past year. The Alliance’s four member Councils, Wellington, Blayney, Cabonne and Central Tablelands Water, had also saved more than $3.2 million through resource sharing and collaborative arrangements since 2003. Cabonne Mayor and outgoing Chairman Kevin Duffy said he was proud of the Alliance’s achievements and paid tribute to the work of the Board, general managers, professional teams and staff of the four member Councils. In particular, he thanked the Alliance’s Executive Manager Donna Galvin for her work and dedication in helping to steer the organisation to such a result. The Alliance’s annual meeting held recently in Blayney heard that new efficiencies in the running of the Alliance had increased savings to its members over the last 12-months. More savings would be made in the future with a tender for a common information technology system across the four Councils and the establishment of shared services and common business and human resource strategies among the key goals.
Daughters get look at local government Encouraging young women to consider working for a country council is part of a new initiative as part of the Year of Women in Local Government. With a female Governor, Governor-General, Premier, and Prime Minister, the program couldn’t have come at a better time. The inaugural “Take Your Daughter to Work Day” is being supported by Bathurst, Blayney, Cabonne, Oberon, and Central Tablelands Water areas. On November 9, employees of these Councils will offer young girls in these communities the opportunity to experience what it is like to work in Local Government. Council employees will be able to take their daughters or other young women in the community to their place of work for the day and be involved in a structured program, exposing them to the breadth of opportunities in Local Government employment.

“This house,” said the real estate salesman, “has both its good points and its bad points. To show you I’m honest, I’m going to tell you about both. The disadvantages are that there is a chemical plant one block south and a slaughterhouse a block north.” “What are the advantages?” inquired the prospective buyer. “The advantage is that you can always tell which way the wind is blowing.”

On Tour with Belmo www.jasonbelmonte.com.au
Hey Hey Everyone, I’m in Seoul, Korea right now and boy oh boy is it warm, no need for the jumpers and coats like back home. The first few days here I was coaching on different military bases, bowling is something that the US military make sure they have on every base. What is even more surprising is how many soldiers bowl, most have their own equipment and all of them were very keen to learn. It was funny getting addressed as "Sir" by the troops, made me feel important ha-ha. I’m now bowling in Korea's largest pro event “ The Sam Ho Cup”. Bowlers from all over the world have arrived today and I hope to improve on my best placed finish here of 3rd, fingers crossed. I'm excited to bowl in a big event again, it’s been a few months since I have competed in something this big and I miss the nerves and the adrenaline of bowling on such a large stage. I hope next week, I'll have some great news regarding the tournament. Also a little plug for Kimberly’s and Bec’s shop “Belle Armoire” the shop really looks amazing :) Be good - Cheers Belmo

“Of course,” explained Grandpa. “How else can I catch my teeth???”
