Talking POINTS

UNTAPPED TREASURE!

with BOB HOLLAND

One of the talking points this week has been the pay rise for Councillors. Our Councillors are divided over whether to accept the rise or not given the current financial climate. One point worth noting in the debate is that the rise came after a tribunal upgraded Orange Council’s rating, which in turn meant that our Mayor and Councillors are entitled to higher remuneration. To be fair, they didn’t just vote themselves a pay rise. Something else that came out of last Tuesday’s Extra-ordinary Meeting was questions about Council spending $500,000 of taxpayer’s money to evaluate Mount Canobolas as a site for mountain bike activities. One of the main concerns being that Mount Canobolas is not in the Orange Council area. That should be interesting! A couple of Councillors at Tuesday’s meeting didn’t do themselves any favours with throw away comments like “too many gutless Councillors” and “go on, get it off your chest.” Very disrespectful and unwarranted in my view.

Mt Canobolas is a unique geographical phenomenon that Orange’s whole tourism industry should be “hooked” around, a life-time local and awardwinning photographer believes. Others including Orange Mayor, Councillor Reg Kidd agree, saying that the split responsibility for the subalpine mount and slopes between Orange and Cabonne Councils and the National Parks and Wildlife Service

has seen this landmark neglected for too long. “Orange needs something to hang its hat on. It’s there, let’s use it,” local identity John “Kichy” Kich said. “It’s special, it’s the highest point at this latitude between Sydney and South Africa,” he added. n Turn to page 2–3 for our special on the Mount. nS ee page 8–9 for John Kich’s photo essay on our greatest natural feature.

Curing the need for quality meats The art of cured meats including freshly-made salami, prosciuttos and cabanossis are now delighting local palates. Orange’s own Stefan Birmili (pictured) is looking to produce these in the district, if he can only find the right location. Go to page 5 for full story.

More news from Council that I am interested in is Council deciding to give away $50,000 worth of Shop Orange Gift Cards to help local businesses, and another $50,000 to help sporting clubs. I’m really interested to understand more about how that all works and how they came up with such a strategy. The Shop Orange Gift Card concept has always been anything but successful, but sadly we seem stuck with it. I’m still very interested in getting a discussion going about a Community Project involving the Botanic Gardens. On that, it’s a pretty simple and straightforward concept, one that will greatly benefit the gardens and Orange overall, so I’m keen to hear from one or more of our service clubs who might be interested in driving such a project with our help. You can read more about this in this week’s Orange City Life.
