THE HEADLINES IN OUR PAPERS ARE DEPRESSING.

railway lines buckled, dead fish floated on the Murrumbidgee and people “fried eggs on the pavement.”

There was worse to come in that year when, on 3rd September, it was announced: “Australia Declares War.” And the lives of Australians changed irredeemably. Conscription was introduced, and families were torn apart.

Each day we are bombarded with news of the pandemic and each day our spirits sink as we read or listen to the latest number of infections.

It may be helpful to have a look back over the years and see what was happening in the daily lives of the population then. It may surprise you!

June 1881: “Suspected Smallpox Outbreak!” were the headlines.

This news would have sent a chill through most people.

Smallpox was a horrible, disfiguring disease which, if it didn’t kill you, would have left you literally scarred for life. No wonder that in October of that year it was announced that “smallpox camps have been erected to isolate the victims.”

It was also claimed that “a cure has been discovered.”

“Dissolve 2ozs cream of tartar in boiling water with sugar and lemon.

Drink a wine glass full every hour until cured.”

It apparently was not terribly successful as in 1884 the epidemic was “still raging.”

Still, by 1889 it was no longer on the front page, having been overtaken by the news that: “Typhoid kills 400 with hundreds more ill.”

Just a year later, yet another disaster hit Sydney when Bubonic Plague grabbed the headlines and strict precautions were “imposed to prevent an epidemic.”

Then, in 1914, the Western world was plunged into the horrors of the First World War, and as it was emerging in December, 1919, the headlines announced: “Deadly Influenza Hits Australia.”

HEADLINES “Most likely brought by returned servicemen. Inoculation centres in the cities are being opened.”

One wonders what they were injecting because it didn’t stop the pandemic, which took over every country in the world for the next two years and caused at least 50 million deaths and possibly many more.

About this time, unpleasant things were also occurring on Sydney Harbour: “Ferry Disaster Claims Forty Lives” screamed the headline and went on to say that the ferry “Greycliffe,” on its way to Watsons Bay, was cut in half by the liner, ”Tahiti”. Forty people were killed and at least fifty injured with terrified people in the water struggling to escape the sinking ferry.

There were glimmers of hope though, because in January 1930, Don Bradman achieved 452 not out, setting a world record in first class cricket. And, in the same month, Norman “Wizard” Smith set a new world land speed record reaching a speed of 148.637mph.

Kingsford Smith, no relation to Wizard, was also setting records that year when he flew from Sydney to

London in 12 days and 18 hours.

In July, Lewis Lassiter left Alice Springs in search of the gold reef he claimed he had found thirty years before.

These achievements were overshadowed though by the Great Depression, which was steadily getting worse.

“Jobless Exceeds 20%” was the grim headline.

Some light relief was offered in June 1935 when, to everyone’s amazement, they read in a Sydney newspaper: “Shark Disgorges Tattooed Arm”.

After much investigation by detectives it was discovered that the arm belonged to Jimmy Smith (also no relation to the other Smiths mentioned previously) who was a convicted SP bookmaker involved in the drug trade.

In 1937, “Infantile Paralysis Epidemic” were the headlines and by the following year there were 20,000 cases in Victoria alone.

There were also reports of more ferries capsizing and bushfires and extraordinary heatwaves.

In 1939, the heat was so bad that

In February 1942 the unthinkable happened: “Darwin Bombed” screamed the headline and it was followed in June by the announcement: “Japanese Submarines Invade Harbour.”

Gradually though, we dragged ourselves out of the horrors of war and on 16th August 1945, came the announcement: “The War Is Over.”

There were encouraging happenings on the health front too and we were told that “Penicillin is Available” and in 1955 the papers declared: “End in Sight for Polio” with the mass production of the Salk vaccine.

We were still coping with epidemics though, when in 1957 “Asian Flu Sweeps the East Coast”with 5000 cases reported in Melbourne.

Our minds were taken off that by the arrival on our shores of four young men from Liverpool, England: “The Young Pop Group Has Been Chased By Screaming Fans Wherever They Have Gone” announced the headlines.

The Beatles had arrived!

And so it went on with more floods and bushfires, the taking of a baby by a dingo, the birth of the first test tube baby, hideous murders, motorcycle massacres, earthquakes and more epidemics.

As the French would have it: “Plus ca change, plus la meme chose.”
