Behind Every Face

Over the years, I have been privileged to share the stories of many people.

story to tell.

In 1916, at the age of 19 Arthur caught the Western Mail train to Sydney where he enlisted in the AIF and joined the 54th Battalion, serving on the Western Front.

This all began for me in the north-western town of Nyngan.

In 1971 when my family moved there, my husband and I joined the local Historical Society, which is always a good place to meet the people who really have an interest in the town.

Within two months, he was wounded in the leg and taken to England to recover.

He was back in France in April and was involved in all the major battles, including the fighting on the Somme, the Battle of Polygon Wood, and the Hundred Days Offensive.

The members were bemoaning the fact that they had no premises for a museum.

I looked at them, and decided in my youthful way, that they were probably museum pieces themselves and suggested that we might make a museum of memories.

In September 1918, he led assault parties to take a machine-gun post, shooting or capturing the enemy and carrying to safety a dangerously wounded comrade during a heavy barrage.

And what a treasure trove I unearthed!

For these deeds, he was awarded the Victoria Cross for outstanding bravery.

The first person to volunteer, was a fine-looking man in his eighties.

His name was Arthur Hall, and he had an amazing

Orange Vinnies Van is back !

The Orange Vinnies Van service will be back on the road this Monday, June 6.

It is the fi rst return of the Vinnies Van this year, said Phil Donnan, Regional Director North West Region of St Vincent de Paul Society, as factors related to the Covid pandemic, made it difficult for Vinnies to bring back the service.

His paper stood for trial by jury and popular legislature, while condemning the oppression of convicts and public immorality on the part of officers and even the governor himself.

“Thanks to the generosity of our volunteers, we are in a position now to recommence the van which we know has been missed by the Orange community,” Phil said, adding that rising food prices, petrol costs and general living expenses are impacting greatly on the community.

Arthur Hall died in February 1978 and was buried at St Mathew’s West Bogan Anglican Church, a little white wooden church set in the vast country that he loved so well.

I, together with a number of other mourners, stood outside under the gum trees with the song of birds in the hot, still summer air.

“Restarting the Vinnies Van may give some relief to those doing it a bit tough at present,” he said.

“At this stage, we are only able to restart the fortnightly Vinnies Van Service. The Friday Café lunch is still on hold. We would love to hear from any community members who have cooking skills and would be able to help prepare a sit-down meal for up to 50 people on a Friday fortnightly basis.

As he was laid to rest, a bugler played the Last Post.

It was the most poignant moment and a fitting way for a hero to be farewelled.

It is not surprising then that Governor Darling took exception to this and Hall was tried and convicted of libel.

But Edward Smith Hall was a very determined man, and continued to publish The Monitor newspaper from jail while he served his sentence.

“We also welcome enquiries from volunteers to help with sandwich making or serving on the van.”

That experience made me realise yet again the truth of the saying that “behind every face is a story”, and over the years I have never stopped looking for it.

I was delighted with the success of my first interview and continued my friendship with Arthur and his delightful wife, Kitty.

“I would like to thank all the Vinnies Van volunteers returning to assist those in the community who are struggling. Our volunteers are the backbone of Vinnies and we could not do it without them,” he concluded.
