Rotary Club of Orange members Martyn Sparkes, John Templeman and Scott Griffiths picking up Christmas trees. The annual fundraising sale of Christmas trees has been a tradition for the club that dates back 60 years.

Six decades on a local Christmas tradition is still helping those in need

F

or more than 6o years, the Rotary Club of Orange have kept up a Christmas tradition that’s raised thousands of dollars to help needy local children.

Every December, members of the club volunteer hours of their time to coordinate the ordering, pick-up and delivery of scores of real pine Christmas trees to homes in Orange, Molong, Blayney, Carcoar and everywhere in between.

“We collect them from a grower over at Ben Bullen,” said Rotary Club of Orange member, Scott Griffiths.

“He provides them at a very reasonable

price to us as one of his charitable acts of the year, which is very welcome and appreciated. We have been doing it now this way for about 10 years but, all up, the Rotary Club of Orange has been selling Christmas trees for 60 years, so it is a very long-standing tradition for the club, selling them locally, to raise money for our local charities.”

This year, Scott and three other members of the club picked up 90 trees, ranging in size from six to ten feet in height, and transported them back to Orange for door-to-door delivery.

In the early days, club members had to go out to cut the trees themselves, Scott said. At one stage, they were even planting trees themselves on one of their member’s properties, but after a few years and many trees lost, they realised all their work was just providing feed to the local hares.

“We take them as far as Molong… we have one customer in Carcoar, a number in Blayney but the majority are in Orange.

And all the money raised from the annual sale of Christmas trees goes towards the club’s charities, in particular, to help local kids, Scott said.

“The cool store in Barrett Street lends the club a section for the trees to keep them fresh and we take them out from there and do deliveries,” said Scott.

“We have developed a group who buy off us every year,” he continued. “There is a lot of goodwill that goes towards it and our customers understand that it is us selling them, not just a private enterprise,

“One of our main charities is the Smith Family in Orange, and to ensure that children have the uniforms and books and things to be able to go to school as anyone else,” he said.

“Our club has a strong view to helping children, those who need it so they can get a leg up to become adults with more opportunities to succeed in life.”

Does Orange need a new pool? indoor and outdoor pools.

Orange City Council has put forward a proposal to build a dedicated learn-to-swim pool at the Orange Aquatic Centre and is seeking community feedback.

“But in winter when the outdoor pool is closed, it’s very hard for swimmers to find a spare lane.”

At last week’s meeting, Orange City Councillors considered a report on a new learn-to-swim pool and resolved to put the concept plans on exhibition for community comment.

Orange City Council’s Sport and Recreation Committee Chair Cr Tammy Greenhalgh believes a dedicated learn-to-swim pool is a great idea.

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said building a new pool would be an investment in community safety, but that this is just the start of a long process to investigate options for expanding the city’s swimming facilities.

“Our Aquatic Centre currently has more than 2500 children and adults every week for swimming lessons,” Cr Hamling said.

“It’s great for community safety and community health that Orange residents are growing up being able to swim, and it’s fine in the summer months when we can use both

“Council staff have been looking at the options and talking with experts in the field at Royal Lifesaving NSW,” Cr Greenhalgh said.

“The best option is an indoor, all-year-round, 30-metre pool that is 900mm deep. It will be ideal for children and adults to learn to swim.”

Council has identified a location for the proposed pool alongside Warrendine Street, on the southern side of the Aquatic Centre.

One of the challenges of the site is the 3.2-metre drop in level from Warrendine Street down to the existing outdoor pool. But that could also offer some advantages, such

as creating a verandah that can overlook the 50-metre pool.

Other design principles for the building include:

Council is now seeking community feedback as to whether to proceed with the proposal.

• Using sustainable energy sources for pool heating and air comfort of the building using north-facing solar panels.

“It’s time to hear the views of the community to see whether locals believe this should be a priority project or not,” Cr Hamling said.

“It’s important to remember,” he added, “ that a project of this scale wouldn’t happen without a government grant.”

In shaping the design for the proposed Orange facility, Council used plans for a recently completed learn-to-swim pool at Denistone East in Sydney designed in consultation with Royal Lifesaving NSW.

• Investigating GeoExchange systems for preheating water to reduce electrical load.

• Understanding the implications of high moisture content in the pool hall and its tendency to condense on any horizontal surfaces and windows.

• Tidying the current concrete area used to store the 50-metre pool cover and other equipment by including a more readily accessible concealed storeroom.

The early design principles include a plan to use the long northern frontage to passively warm the building in winter months, as well as creating spaces where people can relax in a sunny courtyard setting.

Council is yet to receive a detailed cost estimate for the design, but this is expected prior to the Christmas break.

No funds have been allocated in the budget for this project and Council staff will look to seek grant funding.

Multi-million dollar Wentworth Golf Club just months away from first drinks Wentworth Golf Club’s impressive new multi-million dollar clubhouse is just months away from opening its doors.

Renascent project manager Scott Hubbard, said the new clubhouse will be completed in the second quarter of 2024.

Last week, Orange City Life joined the large number of club members who’d taken up an invitation to inspect the construction progress of the $20 million-plus building.

“It’s looking good. It has progressed really really well over the last three months,” said Project Manager Scott Hubbard, of construction firm Renascent.

“All our major services have been put on, so we’ve got power… We’ve started a lower-floor fit-out of the pro shop and simulators so floor finishes are in and linings are on.

“And brickwork, which is a big part of the job, is probably 80 per cent complete, which is great.”

Windows are all installed downstairs, while upstairs

will be done before Christmas, he said.

It had initially been hoped that the building would be finished and open in time for this Christmas, but construction was delayed when it was discovered the site was sitting on solid rock forcing changes to the structural plan. Rain and supply issues caused further delays.

But, with the roof on and most of the external walls complete, there will be few surprises going forward, according to Scott.

He said they plan to hand over the completed building in the second quarter of next year.

“It takes a few of the ambiguities out of the question and allows us to really tightly program our next three to six months,” he said. “It will be all but done in the next quarter. We are going to close up the external walls in the next month to two months, and then it will look like we are not doing much as it will all be inside putting the finishing touches on it.”

Charitable legacy helping keep the lights on at Bowen Community Technology Centre

P

aula Townsend feared she would be shutting the doors of the Bowen Community Technology Centre for good this week, but thanks to a generous bequest from the late Norm and Penhall the not-for-profit community centre’s future has been secured for a little longer.

Established 14 years ago, The Bowen Community Technology Centre provides free access to computers, internet, printing and a helping hand to local kids and adults.

The centre’s hard-working champion, Paula Townsend, regularly helps with writing resumes and job or real estate applications, accessing Government services such as Centrelink and more.

Paula doesn’t ask for much to keep this essential service available to the Bowen community, but for years she has struggled to find ongoing financial support and has continued on only thanks to donations from local businesses and service groups.

“We are a square peg trying to fit into a round hole… So government funding, unless it’s for ‘things’ it is non-existent,” said Paula, who has been able to find grants for new computers and other infrastructure over the years, but not for the day-to-day costs of consumables or her own small wages.

“I do get paid for part of my work, but then I pay for a lot of this stuff myself,” she said.

“Next week was going to be the last week because like I said, you can’t run something on nothing.”

But last week, after hearing the plight of the centre, the Rotary Club of Orange

stepped in to give Paula $5,000 to keep the centre open.

“Our club has been aware of the existence of Bowen Technology Centre for some time and we are really impressed with the work that happens here,” Rotary Club of Orange President Don Martin said.

Don explained that this donation was only made possible because of the income generated from the Deidre and Norm Penhall Foundation, which has been established by the Rotary Club of Orange.

“A year ago, we got a significant grant from the Penhall estate, so the club took a decision that we’ll invest that, and proceeds will go to a community group in need each year,” Don said.

“After Paula came along and explained the work that they did, our club decided to invest in them… The community they

service is a needy community. It is a bunch of volunteers working like a paid job, but unpaid, so you can’t do anything but admire this group of volunteers.”

Norm and Deidre Penhall made regular donations to local charities during their lifetimes. Don said the Rotary Club of Orange is extremely grateful to the Penhall family for the generous bequest and that they can continue the legacy by supporting the Bowen Community Technology Centre in some small way.

“We typically just quietly give groups money, but we think this group is a special kind of group and needs a lot more support than perhaps we can give,” Don said.

“That’s why this is as much about awareness of the work they are doing and that they’re in need… as it is for us, for Norm and Deidre to get a tick.”

otary Club of Orange Daybreak members have helped spread a little Christmas cheer, making a large donation of food goods to be distributed free through

FoodCare Orange.

The club recently held their own Christmas

get-together, with members asked to “bring a plate” or bring food items to donate.

“It came about as we had our Christmas

party, and our members felt that we could do something for the community and donate food for FOOD Care,” explained Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak member Val Randahl, who was delivering the haul of donated goods to FoodCare Orange’s March Street shop last week.

“And our members have been extremely generous!” she said.

“It was ‘bring a plate’ but we didn't need everybody to bring a plate,” added Rotarian Christine Miller. “So those who didn't brought

non-perishabel items for Food Care. Val and I estimate that the average spend was around $50 per member.”

FoodCare Orange has been helping locals keep food on the table for the past ten years.

Four days a week, they open the doors of their March Street supermarket, offering people the chance to grab fresh and frozen foods and household items for free or at a discounted rate.

FoodCare is always happy to accept donations, but particularly now, with the rising

cost of living, more and more people are coming through the doors of their shop.

“Our house, in the middle of our street Our house, was our castle and our keep*

he first lines of the 1980s song sum up most of the Oral History Group’s memories of the house they lived in when they were young.

Much has changed since the cavemen and women walked the earth. According to my research, they didn’t really live in the cave but used them for cooking and left artworks on the walls, particularly at the end of the Ice Age. By about 8000 BC, a new people were living in Jericho and had learned to make mortar, and with it, plastered walls and floors.

One of the world’s first towns was built in Turkey about 6500 BC where the houses were made of mud and brick and were entered through hatches in the roof.

Houses were built touching each other, the roofs possibly being used as streets.

There were no windows or chimneys so there had to be holes in the roof to let out smoke and steam and people slept on platforms, with the landlord still maintaining a room above it.

But that was very much in the beginning and much water flowed under the

proverbial bridge until the first settlement of Australia by Europeans in 1788, the crossing of the mountains and the settling of Orange in the 19th Century.

The village reserve of Orange was laid out in the 1830s and about fourteen years later John Peisley built an inn on land outside the reserve while, about the same time, David Bowie established a blacksmith shop where the Civic Square now stands.

In the 1840s the amount of rural activity in the area led to Orange being proclaimed a village in 1846 and farming increased with orchards established in the foothills of Mt Canobolas. John Templar developed his property and built a mill, which is now known as Templars Mill, and his grandnephew ‘Banjo’ Paterson was born there in 1864.

When gold was discovered in Ophir in 1851 Lucknow became the centre of gold mining activity.

Few buildings remain now from the early Victorian period but the ones that do are the Trinity bluestone church, the former Union Bank building and the Gladstone Hotel.

With the arrival of the railway in 1877 growth continued until the Depression of the late 19th Century.

The Irish Catholic James Dalton had a great influence on Orange. He was very wealthy and initially lived in 70 Byng Street which was built in 1876, before building DuntryLeague and quite a few other beautiful houses.

It was a little fibro house with two bedrooms, a lounge and kitchenette. My two sons shared a room and there was an outside toilet and no garage.”

James Bowen was responsible for the building of Bowen Terrace in the Victorian era which consists of twelve terrace houses, built originally for the accommodation of workers.

“I was born in Springside, in the house at the end of the road,” said Barbara Carr. “My parents were married in 1931 and, when I was five, I needed to go to school so we moved to his mother’s house in Sale Street, Orange.”

The Spring Hill village appeared in the mid-Victorian period which also saw Cook Park and Robinson Park established with many tree plantings.

From 1895 to 1903 there was a strong surge in house building which was referred to as Victorian style and included the Federation era of the early 20th Century.

After World War 1, and before WW 2, a style known as Californian bungalow was popular.

With the advent of the Second World War a small-arms factory was in operation with the workers requiring accommodation and the houses were built at Glenroi were known as ‘Duration Houses’.

Anne Merchant told me: “We moved there in 1964 for six years in Moresby St.

Doreen was born in Forbes where her parents had a property with a two-bedroom house surrounded by a veranda where she slept, while Margaret Jones was born in Balmain but later lived in Rylstone.

“My first house,” Keith told us, “was unique.”

Gallery receives major donation Elisabeth Cummings ‘Western Country’ 2009 etching, aquatint and open-bite

lisabeth Cummings is one of Australia’s most respected living artists with a career spanning over 60 years. Her most recent exhibition ‘Radiance: The Art of Elisabeth Cummings’

at the National Art School, Sydney opened to critical acclaim and drew large crowds.

Cummings work can be found in the collections of all major public institutions throughout Australia and is widely revered by other artists for her innovative and insightful responses to the Australian landscape in her

paintings, monotypes and etchings.

So it was with delight that Orange Regional Gallery recently received an extraordinary donation of 15 etchings and five gouache studies from the artist, alongside a donation of an additional painting, ‘Crossroads’ (1996)

by Randi Linnegar and Robert Linnegar.

These recent acquisitions have significantly enhanced and enriched the Gallery’s collection, which until recently featured only one large painting by Cummings, ‘After the Wet, Elcho Island’ (2004).

visiting audiences a summer highlight. The exhibition presents Cummings’ intimate responses to interiors alongside her vibrant encounters with landscapes from the bush surrounding Wedderburn to the rugged ranges of Arkaroola. Her intuitive approach and her masterful palette provide beguiling combinations and discordant harmonies that seem perfect for the Australian context.

Known for its spontaneity and sense of ease, her work is the result of many decades of hard-won experience. In her etching ‘Western Country’ (2009), for example, Cummings uses a labour-intensive and challenging graphic medium to present a lively impression of an

arid country in the far west of New South Wales. Even though it is a small work in the exhibition, it seems to radiate off the wall. It is worth a visit to see how she uses expressive lines and a limited range of transparent etching inks to great effect.

was recently at a local event. Hundreds of people were present. I saw a familiar face heading my way with great purpose.

I recognised him as a hardcore National Party member. One of the last of the true believers. Or so I thought.

His words surprised me.

“You did the right thing leaving the Nationals,” he said. “You were right.

They’re not the party they used to be. I’m still a member but I won’t hand out howto-votes for them anymore.”

Like me, he could remember the National Party of old. When it really stood for something. How things change.

Contrast those days with what has been occurring lately.

I’m talking about the package recently sent via Australia Post to my home.

The council did a superb job organising it all and MC Neil Gill kept it all running beautifully!

She is a former Cabonne Shire Councillor and aside from the remaining state MPs, is the most senior National Party member in the region.

When confronted by police, she admitted to sending it.

Their silence shows they don’t take this issue seriously. It’s as if they really approve of this nastiness and the party operating in the shadows.

This wasn’t a joke. The sending of the package and the steps taken to conceal her identity, created fear, anxiety and stress for our whole family, including my children. You wonder who may be watching your home. Should you be leaving the house? Should you be going to Parliament? It raises the fear of escalation because you don’t know what else could be coming or what may happen next.

Family members don’t deserve to be brought into politics this way.

If the home and family of a National Party MP had been subjected to this by an opposing party, the Nationals would have been demanding an immediate apology, resignation and expulsion of that person from that party.

The ongoing silence of the Nationals says so much about what that party has become. And like that party member that approached me recently, people are not liking what they’re seeing.

QUESTION TIME DELIVERS NO ANSWERS ON THE GREAT WESTERN HIGHWAY

L

ast week in Question Time, I asked the Minister for Infrastructure, Catherine King, about her callous decision to cut funding to the critical upgrade of the Great Western Highway.

I asked: “the axing of over $2 billion in federal funding for the Great Western Highway upgrade is outrageous and disgraceful. Traffic jams over the Great Dividing Range have become a way of life. You yourself said, ‘It’s a project that certainly is needed.’ Why have our communities been betrayed in this way? Will you reinstate this funding? Why haven’t you or your office answered my written request for a meeting with you?”

Disappointingly, the Minister spent the next few minutes dancing around my questions, instead of giving an open and honest answer to the many thousands of residents in our region and further west who are shocked and appalled by this ridiculous decision.

Instead, she refused to admit the truth; that the infrastructure pipeline in the Central West has become the government’s piggy bank to smash open and help themselves to whenever they cry poor.

In the 18 months since the Federal Labor Government came to power, more than $2.07 billion in announced funding for region-building projects has been robbed from our communities by the Minister for Infrastructure and a remorseless Federal Labor Government.

The question followed a speech I made recently in Parliament, in which I called out the Government’s disgraceful and shocking cut to the Great Western Highway upgrade. An extract of the speech is set out below.

“Region-building projects require the foresight to see beyond what is and picture what could be — region building projects like the Great Western Highway upgrade, which would have helped bridge the great divide between city and country by strengthening the road system which connects them.

Devastatingly, the Federal Labor Government has proved time and time again that the vision of an Australia where country areas stand on equal footing with the city is not one they share.

The repugnant decision to axe over $2 billion of funding and walk away from the Great Western Highway upgrade between Katoomba and Lithgow stinks of city favouritism. It’s robbing the regions. It’s a shameless and blatant burgling from the bush. It’s spitting in the face of country communities which deserve a Great Western Highway that lives up to its name.

The upgrade was more than just a road project; it was an opportunity to finally fix the passage over the Great Dividing Range, improving road accessibility from country to city and boosting regional transport, health and tourism outcomes.

NEW DETENTION LAWS

T

he High Court recently handed down a ruling that the federal government cannot indefinitely hold people in immigration detention if they have “no real prospect” of being deported from Australia in the foreseeable future. The court said it’s unconstitutional.

We know that a number of these detainees have serious criminal records and histories. After the ruling, 148 people were released from detention and six have since been arrested for various offences, with one being charged with two counts of indecent assault in South Australia.

This is outrageous and shocking.

The government’s handling of this matter since the High Court ruling has been shambolic.

The protection of community members around Australia should have been paramount. As soon as the High Court decision came down, new legislation should have been ready to ensure that courts have the power to lock up those detainees that pose a threat to the community.

Infrastructure Australia termed the project ‘a key enabler of regional development’.

Those laws have now finally been passed during a late-night sitting of Parliament last week.

Axing this project shows that this government does not understand country communities and how important it is to improve key transport links between the city and the bush. This outrageous cut is a shameful episode in the history of regional Australia.”

Due to the serious concern about this issue in the Calare electorate, I supported the new laws but believe they could have been made even stronger.

Summer tasks in the garden Summer has finally arrived. We received some incredible falls of rain recently which have been a Godsend to our gardens and veggie patches but sadly impacted many of our orchardists. Make sure you support them and buy as much local produce as you can. Apart from some continuing summer storms (which can be ferocious), it would now appear that the dreaded El Nino has arrived.

Here’s a list of things to do during the summer months: ● Plant in tomatoes, beans and pea seedlings if you haven’t already. More planting suggestions are listed below. If you don’t have much garden space, many will grow quite well in large pots with stakes to keep them from falling in on themselves and to ensure good air

circulation. There are many dwarf varieties. Keep wellwatered, mulch and apply a slow-release vegetable fertiliser. Watch out for snails and slugs, they appear to be in large numbers this year. ● Keep an eye on weeds. Stubborn grasses and pests such as Bindii need constant removal. ● Deadhead your roses now if you want an autumn flush. ● Mulch, mulch and mulch. There are a multitude of mulches you can use. Personally, I prefer first-cut lucerne, which tends to have fewer weeds, and I adore the smell. Pop into your local nursery for other good options such as sugar cane mulch, pebbles, coir and woodchips (make sure they haven’t been treated). ● Weekly long drinks for your garden are better than a quick water each day. Pot plants are the exception to this rule. They generally need watering every other day when the weather is hot.

● Keep your lawns mowed so you can watch out more easily for snakes who, like the snails, are about in numbers. Don’t go too short with your lawn as it can cause scorching and a lack of growth. However, if the hot weather continues, you’ll find that it won’t grow much anyway. I tend to save water for my plants and sacrifice the lawn to fend for itself.

All of these plants can also be popped in now in seedling form: basil, beetroot, broad beans, carrots, celery, corn, cucumber, leek and onion, lettuces, radishes, turnips, suede and zucchini.

COUNCIL AT WORK COUNCIL FLOATS PLANS FOR NEW

LEARN-TO-SWIM POOL

Orange City Council is asking the community to share their views on a proposal to build a dedicated learnto-swim pool at the Orange Aquatic Centre.

Councillors voted to put the concept plans on exhibition for community comment at last week’s meeting.

Mayor Jason Hamling said building the new pool would be an investment in community safety.

“Our Aquatic Centre currently has more than 2500 children and adults every week for swimming lessons,” Cr Hamling said.

“It’s great for community safety and community health that Orange residents are growing up being able to

swim. It’s fine in the summer months when we can use both indoor and outdoor pools, but in winter when the outdoor pool is closed, it’s very hard for swimmers to find a spare lane.”

Residents are being encouraged to complete a short survey at the YourSay Orange site https://yoursay. orange.nsw.gov.au/ Orange City Council’s Sport and Recreation Committee chair Cr Tammy Greenhalgh says a dedicated learnto-swim pool is a great idea.

“Council staff have been looking at the options and talking with experts at Royal Lifesaving NSW,” Cr Greenhalgh said.

“The best option is an indoor, year-round, 30-metre pool that is 900mm deep, gently sloping down to 1.2 metres at the other end. It will be ideal for children and adults to learn to swim.”

The best identified location is alongside Warrendine Street, on the southern side of the Aquatic Centre.

Council is yet to receive a detailed cost estimate for the design and no funds have been allocated in the budget for this project. Council staff anticipate that grant funds will be sought when grants rounds become available.

Q&A with local performer JACK DAINTITH Orange local Jack Daintith is a man of many talents. A teacher, musical theatre performer, and marathon runner. After surviving a horrific push bike accident several years ago, Jack got back on the bike, tuned his guitar and now performs his favourite music to crowds all over the Central West.

Jack also recently made his professional stage debut in the sold-out Muriel’s Wedding The Musical at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney.

So Jack, who/what are your musical influences?

I’m a big fan of Michael Buble! I love all his songs as they are very catchy and great music to sing to.

What songs are your favourites to really get a crowd going?

I love singing the classics such as Sweet Caroline, Khe Sanh, American Pie, as well as others such as My Girl and Blame it on the Boogie!

You have been involved in many musical theatre productions including professional productions such as Muriel’s Wedding at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney, what has been your favourite character or performance?

FESTIVAL OF SMALL HALLS 2024 FEATURING RYAN YOUNG AND ALANA WILKINSON The Festival of Small Halls returns to the Bloomfield Hall on January 7, 2024, once again bringing some of the best international and national artists touring the Country today.

Headlining the Bloomfield Hall concert in January will be the exciting young Scots fiddler Ryan Young, well regarded for his virtuoso mastery of his instrument and ability to move audiences with his imaginative interpretations of traditional Scottish and Irish tunes.

TEAM GOTCH FIAT SPORT The Orange-based rally team, headed by driver Leigh Gotch and navigator David Green, endured a trying final rally for 2023 in the beautiful village of Black Springs to finish fifth in class and 21st outright.

The team’s Fiat 131 Abarth is a lovingly recreated replica of the car that was raced with success by rally legend and threetime Australian Rally Champion Greg Carr in the late 1970s and 1980s — even down to the paint scheme which includes Carr’s sponsors at the time: Harris Farm Markets, Lovell’s Springs and Gazebo Hotels.

After a strong start at 17th out of a grid of 42 crews, the FIAT 131 Abarth suffered a puncture on the second stage which cost the team valuable minutes and dashed hopes of a top-15 finish as Leigh and David heroically changed the tyre.

The puncture pushed the FIAT down to 39th on the stage but this only encouraged the crew to push harder to make up the lost time. The strong performance of the car and professionalism of the team saw them rapidly recover ground, leading to a final result of 21st outright and 5th in the classic class.

The team will be working on the car and testing over the holiday period and be back in action next season.

Saturday, December 16, from 9am to 12 noon in Crossroads Park.

With lots of fabulous country cooks their fresh cakes and biscuits are legendary.

So too are the jams, chutneys and pickles.

And make sure you try the local honey!

There are stalls with beautiful craft items that will make great gifts for Christmas.

Excellent coffee is available across the road at the General Store.

If it is raining, the market will be held under cover.

CHRISTMAS HOPES It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. But does it feel like it? I don’t know about you, but I am feeling a bit of a lag in my Christmas spirit. It is usually about this time of the year, as we get ready for our annual carols event, that my Christmas cheer is on the up. Yet for some reason, I’m not quite there at the moment. Maybe it is because of the weather. Maybe it is because of other factors. Whatever it is, I am just not feeling it. But then again, do I need to feel like Christmas for Christmas to happen? In one sense it is just another date in the calendar.

But it is far more than just a date. There is something almost mystical about the Christmas season. It does something to us. It makes us nostalgic. It makes us reflect on those things that are of momentous importance. But what is it about Christmas that we need to ‘be in the mood’ for it if we are to enjoy it?

What is it about Christmas that we need to feel? For some, it may be a feeling of comfort as families come together.

For others, it is a feeling of generosity as you get to give gifts to those around you. Maybe you see Christmas as a time where you get to blow off some steam as you celebrate the year that was.

Whatever the reason, how much does the original meaning of Christmas cross your mind? We celebrate Christmas for a reason. It is not just a random holiday. It is the Christian season of Advent that culminates with Christmas Day that celebrates hope in the birth of Jesus. And what is this hope? It is

the peace that came in Jesus and was announced by the angels. In Luke 2:14 the angels sang: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” In this announcement, we see what Christmas is all about. About a child being born who would be the saviour of the world.

That may seem like a crazy reason to have a public holiday. It may even seem like it has absolutely nothing to do with big family lunches, pine trees, Santa Claus, and presents. But perhaps it is this dissonance between what I know and love about what Christmas is, and feeling that tension between this and how we celebrate Christmas in our culture that leaves me feeling a bit ‘meh’ about this time of the year. But then, as I spend time reading the nativity story from The Bible, singing Christmas carols and pondering about the advent season, I see afresh again the reason why we celebrate with all the trimmings.

Because at the first Christmas, the greatest celebration began. Because at the first Christmas, God came to save people from their sin. And that is something that is worth celebrating. So, as we enter into these last few weeks before Christmas and, in and amongst all of the craziness of the season, maybe you can take a moment to think about what it is that this season is all about.

THE HEART OF COMMERCE IN LORDS PLACE

Russell Chambers, situated on the eastern side of Lords Place for many years, was in the heart of Orange’s commercial district. It was probably built in the late 19th century and over the years it housed solicitors’ offices, architects, accountants and other businesses. Solicitor Mick Casey handled court cases from his office there, shared with Harold McKay, who dealt with land purchases. Prominent architect William Lamrock had an office there, as did solicitor George de Vial Pilcher.

In the mid-1950s the building was occupied by real estate and stock agent Tony O’Malley and solicitors Upton and Hawke. The building was demolished in the 1960s.

THUMBS UP I would like to give a BIG THUMBS UP to the Clifton Grove and Orange Rural Fire Service brigades.

They recently did a controlled grass fire training exercise on our property recently. We were impressed with the new trucks and utes that the brigades now have. A special thanks to all the volunteer members who attended on the day. A job well done!

THUMBS UP to Calare Public School for their Year 2 presentation day. I have been to many presentation days but what a great idea separating the grades, making parking easy, the presentation time pleasant and focusing on the kids.

THUMBS DOWN to the

Orange City Centre for not having an escalator operating to go up to the shops in the centre. No thought of the elderly or mothers with prams.

Management needs to rectify this to ensure that customers are not inconvenienced.

THUMBS UP and a sincere thank you to the young lady who graciously assisted me at the Woolworths petrol bowser recently. On my way to pay, we met again, and she informed me she had paid for my petrol. What a special young lady! Her actions are an inspiration to make a similar gesture when the opportunity arises.

THUMBS UP to Tony Mileto for making the CBD safer for pedestrians. Now how about making the roundabouts safer? Only about 1 in 10 cars “blink off ”. Please install signs like they have in Dubbo and Wellington, they have had them for a long time.

A VERY BIG THUMBS DOWN to the employee or

employees at the mail sorting centre who seem to think it’s ok to make sure some Christmas cards don’t reach their destination but instead choose to do the wrong thing and steal them. I posted a card from my local post office on November 16, and the recipient still hasn’t received it. This isn’t the first time! I have gone to the trouble of making a formal complaint to Australia Post and the Commonwealth Ombudsman to make further investigations THUMBS DOWN to

the lady who carried on like a pork chop at Orange Airport and who demanded that the flight not be cancelled because she had a connecting flight. She was rude to the customer service agent and then demanded that the connecting flight in Sydney wait for her.

THUMBS UP to the lovely lady at Aldis who paid for my groceries, when I was having issues with my bank during payment. Merry Christmas! Good to know such kindness still exists in the community.

THUMBS UP to the Gosling Creek Park runners.

After they had left the venue, I needed to use a toilet, and even with 150 runners plus onlookers and volunteers, it was spotless. On checking the others, all were the same. I salute you all. Well done.

ALSO, THUMBS UP to the Orange City Council. They do a great job maintaining this large reserve for us grateful ratepayers.

THUMBS UP to Orange City Council for looking after Elephant Park/Pilcher Park. It always looks great. The lawns are mowed. New seating on the walkways, and clearing out the rubbish around the creek beds. A real asset for Orange.

THUMBS DOWN once

again to the unregistered motorbike riding along Taronga Avenue on the evening of Sunday, December 3. Police were called and will continue to be every time it happens. If anyone knows the address where this motorbike comes from can they report it to the Orange Police. This is just rubbish behaviour in our once quiet and peaceful neighbourhood.

THUMBS DOWN to the very rude hospitality worker who served me the other day.

She needs to change her career. Very unpleasant. Will not be back!

THUMBS DOWN to the truck driver caught speeding in the Dalton Street school zone on December 1. The arguing and gesticulations with the police officer were unnecessary.

THUMBS UP to the residents of Discovery Hill and Phillip Street East for their wonderful Christmas light displays! Obviously, a lot of time and effort has gone into creating such wonderful displays, they look fabulous.

Well Done!

THUMBS DOWN to cafes bringing in a merchant fee when you order your coffee using their app. A 12oz latte is now $6.10 per cup. You’ve lost me as a customer.

THUMBS DOWN to the trail bike riders with tiny tots on board almost getting hit by cars and a bus. Tragedy waiting to happen.

THUMBS UP to the lovely lady who paid for my lunch at Bensons Cafe. It made my day, which had been quite ordinary.

THUMBS UP to the people who supplied a trailer load of free cherries outside the service station in Cargo.

A few kids jumped up there when we left… eight big smiles, and you provided a tasty treat for everyone. The Christmas display across the road added more excitement to what’s coming soon. Loved the Grinch display and the huge blow-ups! Great work, Cargo.

THUMBS DOWN to the police not patrolling the main streets of the CBD orange after the speed reduction.

People are still speeding up and down the main street without caring about the new speed limit. Some say it’s revenue-raising — of course it is! To save lives. It’ll make you think twice before speeding.

THUMBS DOWN to the woman in a local clothing store who was treating the other employee the way you were in front of customers.

Not only did she not deserve to be treated like that, but it wasn’t pleasant for customers to hear it.

THUMBS UP to Jesse the new locksmith who turned chaos into order. He was approachable, and obviously knew his job. Rekeying and a couple of repairs and tweaks, I now have keys down to two for the whole house. Thank you Jesse!

FOMO or JOMO? WITH SUELLEN MILHAM

You can probably guess my age bracket when I tell you that I had to have someone less than half my age explain to me what FOMO is. How terribly worrying that you might miss out on an exciting event that others might be going to! The recent sale of Taylor Swift concert tickets generated a lot of FOMO in homes, at work computers and in a queue at the Orange Civic Theatre (for those who knew to go there). In this

instance I experienced JOMO. Yes, there sometimes is a joy of missing out. Some of my young friends would be shocked by that because they have a lot more experience of what Taylor has to offer.

But in my ignorance, I had a stress-free day and didn’t spend money, hence, my JOMO. In the ups and downs of life there is something of greater significance that Jesus suggests we should fear missing out on, and that is life with him.

In responding to Jesus saying ‘Come, follow me’ there is no need for FOMO nor JOMO, no queue nor wait but the promise of a lasting joy.
