Popular local author Kim Kelly celebrates 10 years since the release of her first novel, Black Diamonds, with an exciting revamp of her books.

e’ve featured much-loved Australian author and Millthorpe local Kim Kelly in OC Life before, where she discussed handling grief and anxiety, all while establishing her remarkable career as a writer and editor, and facing the dire health of her husband – a situation ‘fixed’ by Kim giving him one of her kidneys.

Now, Kim is celebrating 10 years since the publication of her first historical fiction novel, Black Diamonds, and to mark the milestone she’s repacked the book along with three of her novels which followed, This Red Earth, The Blue Mile and Paper Daises. More recently Kim authored the popular 28

Wild Chicory and Jewel Sea. The decision to repackage the books was one Kim describes as an “emotional and sentimental desire”, all based around Black Diamonds.

“Black Diamonds was the book that launched my career. It’s been adopted fondly because it’s not only positive and dramatic, but it acknowledges the historical significance of Lithgow during World War I – it’s a place often overlooked, just driven through.”

Not only are the books repackaged, “to bring together the kaleidoscopic bits of me,” but new copies of Black Diamonds are available again after the book has been out of print since 2009, much to excitement of Kim’s readers.

“I saw online a $150 second-hand copy, it’s insane!” Kim said. “I’m really excited to be able to make this book available at a reasonable price again.”

Kim’s stories shine a bright light on forgotten corners of Australia’s past and tell the tales of ordinary people living through extraordinary times, with praise for Kim’s work including: ‘Colourful, evocative and energetic,’ SMH; ‘Impressive research,’ Daily Telegraph; ‘Why can’t more people write like this?’ the Age. n Australian-first service which provides busy parents of teenagers with free, confidential one-on-one parenting help will be launched by digital mental health service ReachOut Australia. Delivered using a mix of online and pre-booked phone sessions, ReachOut Parents Coaching gives parents the flexibility to easily access support from anywhere in the country.

Any parent who is worried about their relationship with their teenager, or concerned about their teenager’s

wellbeing or behaviour, can access up to four phone sessions with a professional parenting coach as well as a range of personalised digital resources. Parents looking to better understand their teenager or wanting general parenting support would also benefit from the service.

All phone sessions are delivered by trained professionals from The Benevolent Society – experts in helping families build strong relationships – and tailored to an individual’s specific goals and situation. This means that parents

will receive practical strategies they can put to use immediately after their first call.

ReachOut CEO Jono Nicholas said the service is a solution for busy parents of teenagers who are looking to access support without having to travel to on-the-ground services, many of which struggle to keep up with demand.

“Raising happy and healthy teenagers today can be a minefield.

This is the first generation of parents facing issues around technology and social media in addition to the

age-old challenges such as bullying, drinking, sex and relationships. We also know that around one in four young people are likely to have a mental illness.

“At the same time, today’s parents are working longer hours, making it even harder to access support during the week.

“Because this is a digital-based service, parents have the flexibility to schedule sessions at times that suit them – whether at home or during a lunch break. Booking a session is as easy as buying a cinema ticket online.”

First Home Buyers Save Big with Stamp Duty Exemption First home buyers of existing and new properties costing up to $650,000 will be exempt from paying stamp duty.

NSW has announced a full stamp duty exemption from 1 July 2017 for fi rst home buyers for properties costing up to $650,000, with a discount for properties worth up to $800,000.

Previously, legislation only allowed the exemption to cover fir st home buyers who were purchasing a new home, whereas now an eligible fir st home can be a new or existing property.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian last Thursday said the reforms were a “huge win for those aspiring to own their fir st home” in NSW. It’s particularly a win for regional areas.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, median house prices in Orange in 2014 were $348,500, whereas Sydney houses had a median price of $1,135,000, meaning most are far too costly to benefit from the scheme.

“Young professionals tend to favour the old heritage ‘Paddington style’ buildings, which are particularly affordable if you venture out to east Orange, like Autumn and McLachlan Streets,” Paul said. “These stamp duty changes give them more options to purchase the older buildings they really love as their first home.”

SUPER IS CHANGING

IF THERE WAS EVER A TIME TO TAKE STOCK OF YOUR RETIREMENT SAVINGS NOW MAY BE A WORTHWHILE TIME…

S

o, you want to grow your Super and take advantage of the tax concessions Super brings? Well, you need to make sure you know that from July 1, 2017 the system is making some big changes!

If you are putting money into super before tax, you will fall into the concessional contributions bucket, which I will explain in a little more detail shortly.

Contributions of super before tax include the total of the following: contributions made by selfemployed persons; compulsory super contributions made by employers on

behalf of employees; any voluntary super contributions via salary sacrifice agreements with an employer; and any insurances funded by your super.

The contribution caps limit the amount that can be contributed into superannuation for a person each financial year. Everything in the ‘bucket’ needs to stay below this cap, or else the Tax Office can charge additional tax on excess contributions!

The current concessional contribution cap (that is, the amount of contributions you can make before tax) of $30,000 per year for individuals under 49 years of age (as at 30 June

2016) and $35,000pa for individuals 49 years and older (as at 30 June 2016) remains until 30 June 2017.

From 1 July, 2017 this drops to $25,000 per year. This means there may be room to make additional contributions via your existing salary sacrificing arrangements if you are quick, and other individual taxdeductible contributions* (for example, if you are self-employed) before 30 June 17 and utilise the higher cap.

If you wanted to contribute nonconcessional contributions, which means Super after tax, the current caps are more complicated (by all means,

come and see us if you’d like more information!), but they will remain as they are until 30 June 2017 and on 1 July 2017 they will also be reducing quite significantly.

Furthermore, if your superannuation balance is over $1.6 million, you will no longer be eligible to make nonconcessional contributions. If it’s below this threshold, you can still make nonconcessional contributions if you stay under the $1.6 million limit.

If there was ever a time to take stock of your retirement savings now may be a worthwhile time to revisit your existing salary sacrificing to super

arrangements and other individual tax deductible concessional contributions prior to 1 July 2017, while you still have time.

This will ensure you will stay within the new rules and grow your own knowledge on how the changes affect you*.

FAT! DON’T FEAR; EAT THAT

Eating fat will make you fat! Eat a low fat diet and you will have the body you want! Yes, we’ve heard it before and guess what; it’s not true!

W

e NEED to consume good quality fats for so many different functions in our body such as lowering bad cholesterol, giving you shiny hair and healthy nails and helping you lose weight.

Fat also helps to move some vitamins around our body and also helps with making hormones. We need fat to ensure our cell membranes are kept moist which can prevent premature aging.

Now I have your attention let me share with you some information about the benefits of including healthy fats in your diet!

Lets start with milk. ‘Can I please get a skinny latte’ will no longer be your morning coffee order, well hopefully not! Did you know that skim and low fat milk is high in sugar! The sugar content will actually cause more weight gain than consuming full fat milk! The nutrients found in milk, vitamin D, E and A, are fat-soluble vitamins which mean they are better absorbed by the body when they’re delivered via fats. A large majority of the 38

population is deficient in vitamin D and consuming organic whole milk is a simple way you can help to increase your vitamin D levels. Skim and low fat milk contain powdered milk, which is made with oxidised cholesterol, a carcinogen (a substance which can cause cancer in living tissue). Oxidised cholesterol can contribute to atherosclerosis (the build up of plague in your arteries). As well as the fat content of milk, it’s also important to ensure the milk you purchase is coming from cows not treated with hormones.

Whole Milk from cows with a diet high in grass and hay, not corn, means you will also reap more health benefits from the milk.

Avocados (Hass) are currently in season. I love avocados, think smashed avocado on toast with lime juice, salt and pepper on toast, to chocolate avocado moose (if you haven’t tried it, do it!). Avocados are so versatile and are one of the healthiest fruits you can consume! They’re rich in monounsaturated fats, which help to raise levels of good cholesterol while lowering the

bad. Avocados are also a great source of vitamin E. This vitamin helps to boost immunity, helpful during an Orange winter, prevent free radical damage and also acts as an anti-aging nutrient for the skin.

As well as the delicious recipes suggestions above, avocados make a wonderful snack because they’re packed with healthy protein. As if this wasn’t enough, avocados are a folate food; therefore, they’re very beneficial for pregnant women.

Coconut oil, is one of my favourite oils, it’s so versatile.

As well as having an enormous range of health benefits, it’s also a fantastic product, which can be used topically. Like ghee, coconut oil contains MCTs. MCTs are good fats, they’re rapidly absorbed by the body and are used as fuel by organs and muscles.

Lauric acid is one of the MCTs found in coconut oil and it’s a powerful anti-microbial. The anti microbial properties of coconut oil have a soothing effect on bacteria, candida and parasites and been shown to benefi t digestive disorders. The good

fats found in coconut oil (lauric acid, caprylic acid and capric acid) have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties, which can help to boost immunity.

Omega 3 essential fatty acids; why are they called essential?

Because our body can’t make them, we need to get them from our diet. The preferred sources of omega 3s are DHA and EPA, these are found in seafood sources like nutritious salmon and sardines. We can incorporate ALA into our diet through certain nuts and seeds as well as high quality cuts of meat such as grass fed beef.

Walnuts are the best omega 3 nuts to consume and adding chia and flaxseeds to your diet are seeds with the highest ALA content.

This week I want to share with you a recipe that I am thoroughly enjoying at the moment. It contains many healthy fats, and is one that I hope you enjoy also.

ZAN’S CRISPY SALMON WITH COCONUT & LIME MASH & STEAMED GREENS INGREDIENTS 2 salmon fillets (wild not farmed) 1 medium sweet potato, diced 1 medium zucchini sliced 1 small head of broccoli 1 small head of cauliflower 2 tablespoons coconut oil 1 lime, juiced Salt and pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons sauerkraut (optional but recommended)

METHOD 1. Cook sweet potato, until tender 2. Heat pan on medium - high, add salmon skin side down (makes it crispy) 3. Add salt and pepper to top of salmon; cook for 2 – 3 minutes then flip. Cook for 2 – 3 minutes then reduce heat to medium – low 4. Steam vegetables until tender 5. Continue to cook salmon until cooked thorough (about 7 – 10 minutes) 6. Drain sweet potato, add coconut oil, lime juice, salt and pepper, combine and mash.

7. Serve and enjoy

Two of Australia’s most Iconic bands are teaming up for a full national tour celebrating their place in Aussie music history!

When 1927 debuted with the album ‘Ish’ it went on to become the highest selling debut release by an Australian artist and contained a staggering 6 charted singles including their mega hits ‘If I Could’ and ‘That’s When I think of You’. The band will perform ‘Ish’ in its entirety, as well their follow up hit songs.

Pseudo Echo will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of ‘Funky Town’, which held the number 1 spot in Australia for a record 12 weeks! The band will perform a set packed with hits including ‘Listening’, ‘A Beat for You’, ‘Don’t Go’, ‘Living in a Dream’ and many more.

Psuedo Echo vocalist Brian Canham told OC Life, “The shows we’ve been doing with 1927 have been sold out, it’s worked out to be a good combination. Our music is from different ends of the spectrum, so everyone goes away happy!”

CORANDERRK A CO-PRODUCTION BY ILBIJERRI THEATRE COMPANY & BELVOIR

I

n 1863, one of the spaces of land allocated for aborigines was the Coranderrk mission. By the mid-1870s Coranderrk’s first manager, John Green, worked closely with Indigenous leaders to build housing and plant crops on site, and by mid 1870s, the area had become a highly productive farm and a valuable piece of land.

The Victorian Aboriginal Protection board then decided they’d like to move the Aboriginal people on. They had the power under the Aboriginal Protection Act of 1869 to determine where Aboriginal people could live, employment, marriage, and almost every aspect of daily life.

At a Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry in 1881, the men and women of the Coranderrk 40

Aboriginal Reserve went head-to-head with the Aboriginal Protection Board. Their goal was both simple and revolutionary: to be allowed to continue the brilliant experiment in self-determination they had pioneered for themselves on the scrap of country left to them.

It wasn’t until 1998 that the descendants of the Coranderrk community were able to buy back a small portion of the land that was taken from their ancestors.

Coranderrk is about what might have been.

The production recreates the inquiry, in a theatrical experience which is both immersive and an important part of history.

It revives the voices of all those, black and white, who fought for a better pact between

the country’s oldest and newest inhabitants.

This special production pays tribute to the resilience and adaptability of a people who rose to the challenge despite the odds, appropriating the power of the written word to make their own voices ring loud and clear.

Coranderrk is a collaboration between leading Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, researchers, education experts and community members. The production aims to encourage a shared understanding of the past between Aboriginal and nonAboriginal people.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander audiences are warned that this production contains images of deceased persons.

The production will be at Orange Civic Theatre at 8pm at 17 June.
