DON’T BE A DUMMY WITH DEDUCTIONS!

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning taxpayers to avoid incorrect claims for work-related expenses at tax time this year.

A

ssistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said the ATO is using real-time data to compare taxpayers with others in similar occupations and income brackets, to identify higher-thanexpected claims related to expenses including vehicle, travel, internet and mobile phone, and self-education.

“It is important to know what you’re eligible to claim before lodging your tax return and to make sure you don’t claim more than you’re entitled to,” Ms Anderson said.

“Many taxpayers don’t have a good understanding of what deductions

they can claim, and believe they can claim for items which they in fact can’t.

Some taxpayers even think that you can make a standard claim of $300 without having spent the money. You don’t need receipts for claims up to $300 but you must have actually spent the money, and be able to show us how you worked out your deduction if asked.”

Ms Anderson said that deductions for work uniforms are also a common trap for employees at tax time.

“It’s a myth that you can claim everyday clothes, for example, black pants and a plain white shirt, even

if you only wear them to work, and your employer says you have to. To legitimately claim your uniform, it needs be unique and distinctive, such as a uniform with your employer’s logo, or be specific to your occupation and not for everyday use, like chef’s pants or coloured safety vests.

“It sounds like a small thing, but we aren’t talking about small sums of money here. There are 13 million taxpayers, so if everyone over claims even $100 that adds up to a lot.”

Ms Anderson said the ATO’s focus is on helping taxpayers get it right in the first instance, but the ATO is also

on the lookout for red flags to find people who are doing the wrong thing.

“We have the technology and experience to detect noncompliance and we are continuing to catch taxpayers who are deliberately doing the wrong thing.”

While it’s important not to claim incorrect tax deductions, Matt Wren from CKC Accountants in Orange points out that it’s equally important to make sure you’re claiming what you’re entitled to – which often isn’t the case when people do their own tax returns.

“Attempting to do it themselves often costs money – a lot of people have legitimate deductions that they don’t know they’re allowed to claim in their specific situation, which more than covers the amount of getting the tax return done by a Tax Agent.” Matt explained.

“While it’s fair that the ATO warn people to watch their deductions, it’s also makes sense that people take the opportunity to see an accountant once a year to make sure they educate themselves in what they can claim, to make sure they aren’t missing out.”

ENERGY PRICE RISES LEAVE AUSSIES OUT IN THE COLD 41% of Aussies will reduce heating to combat latest energy price hikes

H

ouseholds may be turning into fridges this winter, as residents across Australia are at their wit’s end to find ways to reduce the cost of energy bills, with gas and electricity prices rising again on 1 July. New figures reveal that 41 per cent of Aussies will be reducing their energy usage around the home as the only way to combat bill shock at the end of winter.

The results come via comparethemarket.com.au after a survey of an independent panel of 1000 Australians. The survey asked Australians how they would act after the 1 July energy price increases. The findings coincide with announcements from AGL, Origin and Energy Australia that households across NSW, QLD and SA will be paying up to $500 more a year for electricity and gas after 1 July.

The survey results revealed that a further 23 per cent of respondents will shop around to find a cheaper energy plan or energy supplier, 28 per cent will use the same amount of energy and simply brave the 30

higher energy bills, and 9 per cent expect their energy bills to increase in the next 12 months due to various reasons such as growing a family or additional household appliances.

The research also showed that the younger generations are more likely to cut their energy usage and put up with the cold this winter. Fortysix per cent of 18 to 34-year-olds are expected to reduce their energy usage over the next 12 months, compared with just 39 per cent of 45 to 64-year-olds and 42 per cent of the over 65-year-olds.

Additionally, the survey revealed that it’s the older age groups who are more likely to shop around for a cheaper plan. Thirty per cent of respondents over 65 are looking to switch for a better deal, compared with 24 per cent of 45 to 54-year-olds, 20 per cent of 35 to 44-year-olds and just 16 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds.

Abigail Koch, spokesperson for comparethemarket.com.au said, “A hike in energy bills is more likely to affect people between the ages of 25 and 44, with 14 per cent of

respondents in this age group expecting to pay more for their energy usage over the next 12 months. This age group is typically growing their families, and with that comes bigger homes and more household appliances. Increases in energy prices on 1 July could put them at serious risk of bill shock come the end of winter.

“Last year, winter brought an increase of $106.71 to an average energy bill due to increased usage in heating the household. Combined with the 1 July price hike, families will feel the pressure to combat their energy costs, leaving some out in the cold.”

9 TIPS TO REDUCE HOUSEHOLD ENERGY BILLS THIS WINTER:

Use the sun as a natural heater.

Open curtains on your northfacing windows during the day to allow sunlight to heat your home.

Make sure you close them at night to lock in the warm air.

Watch your hot water usage.

Use the shortest—or economy —cycles, and only wash full loads in your dishwasher and washing machine. Turn down the temperature of your hot water and use your washing machine on a cold water cycle.

Plan your washing around the weather. Put your washing on the line outside where possible in winter.

Get smarter with your lighting. Ensure every light bulb in your home is an energy-saving model. Consider using lamps—they use less energy than ceiling lights.

Switch off appliances at the wall. Appliances on standby are responsible for up to 10 per cent of your power bill. A power board can help make it easy for you to switch off all appliances using the same switch.

Learn about penalties upfront. Penalties for missed payments vary, but avoiding payments altogether can lead to late-payment penalties, disconnections and reconnection fees.

If you’re struggling to pay on time, it’s best to inform your energy retailer.

Monthly billing. This can be done upon request from some suppliers and will help you better monitor your month-on-month energy usage and will prevent you facing a costly lump sum quarterly bill.

Look out for discounts.

Keeping an eye out for discounts is a good way to keep costs low, but be aware some discounts only apply in particular circumstances such as paying bills on time.

The NSW opposition’s call to re-regulate energy pricing is addressing the ‘wrong problem’ according to the energy industry.

A

fter a call by the NSW opposition to re-regulate the electricity market to ensure power prices are aligned with inflation, the energy industry has responded by stating that this would do nothing to protect NSW taxpayers from the rising costs of living.

The Australian Energy Council’s Chief Executive, Matthew Warren, said recent price increases were the result of sustained national policy uncertainty, government interference and arbitrary constraints on gas supplies.

“This is driving up electricity prices to unsustainable levels.

The impact on the industry, its customers – households and businesses – and the economy generally has become critical, but

populist moves are likely to only make the situation worse and constrain future investment in the state.

Warren maintains that the best course of action is to let the mechanism of supply and demand work for itself in a competitive market, rather than constant change and disruption – all of which comes at a cost to taxpayers. “[Re-regulation] is addressing the wrong problem – the real problem is policy flip flopping and government interventions.

“Competition in electricity markets has been working in NSW since deregulation in 2014 with consumer benefits highlighted by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal’s reviews of the market.”

I know which one I’m choosing!

How about you? Is it something you’ve really given much thought to? If you’re like most people, the answer is no. That’s

understandable though… it’s an evolutionary thing. We’ve evolved to have the biggest brains of all species, hence why we’re at the top of the food chain. But it’s that food chain that’s essentially driven that evolution and is why we tend to think short-term. We’re really designed to be thinking about where out next meal is going to come from. It’s only in the very recent history of humans that we’ve started to have to think about living a long life and planning for the long term.

Many people aren’t fond of numbers but they can tell powerful stories. Only back in 1900, the average life expectancy of a human was 31 years. Compare that to today, when we really need to be planning for at least 31 years of being retired! If you’d been around in 1900, you wouldn’t have been exhausting much mental effort on how you were going to manage your income to save some of it before retiring at around 60 and needing to fund your retirement until around 90. No, if you’d been around in 1900 you would have been thankful just to earn anything to put food on the table and get to watch your kids grow up.

Times have changed. The world

has changed. Our thinking around managing our money, generally, hasn’t changed all that much as we tend to continue to live pay cheque to pay cheque. That’s why we have COMPULSORY superannuation, because left to our own devices, most of us would save nothing for retirement… not because we’re not smart enough to do so but because we haven’t evolved to think that way.

So let’s all take an evolutionary step together and start thinking about our money long term (not all of it, we need to also think about some of our money as being short term). And here’s one of the most powerful aspects of taking that step… if you can take that step, you can then pass it on to your kids and they can pass it on to theirs.

As you would already know, life isn’t always easy, but if you can have a secure financial future it at least makes one part of life easier.

After all, as Helen Gurley Brown once said, ‘Money, if it does not bring you happiness, will at least help you be miserable in comfort’.

St Marys Church is packed tonight not with parishioners, but music-lovers of all ages who have come to partake in a choral spectacular. The Orange Male Voice Choir (OMVC) warm the crowd up with their carefully selected first set including 'Men of Song'. A nice counterpoint comes with the sweet sounds from Orange’s Female choir, Cantar. The visitors Wagga City Rugby Male choir nail their contemporary set greatly enjoying themselves with ‘Walking in Memphis’.

Orange High School Man Choir sing with the confidence of seasoned performers nailing the James Bond theme from Spectre to rapturous applause.

The Male Choirs combine to perform a Beatles medley that gets the crowd so excited that they clap fervently at the end of each tune rather than at the end of the piece.

The second set begins with a nice interlude of Bach featuring Flautist Jackie Shields. OMVC give it everything on their second set and then some more as Cantar join them in an almost angelic addition, appropriately finishing this set on an amen.

The Combined Male Choirs (CMC) are led by Paul Jarman

on two of his compositions.

One which premiered tonight is the song especially written especially for OMVC, ‘Friendship in Song’, with references to the Colour City with its mountains and vines.

To bring the evening to its finale all stops are pulled with Cantar joining in with CMC, while two trumpeters from City of Orange Brass Band come up on the blind-side to deliver the ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’.

This arrangement works a treat with the amount of choral talent in the room providing just the right amount of space to let each choir shine. The OMVC long time accompanist Beverly Glover builds the performance to a great the crescendo on the piano, with the final notes ringing she walks away for the last time to a standing ovation.

This performance is another testament to the rich culture that exists within Orange.

Especially as hundreds of people are willing to come out on a chilly night and pay to be entertained with a show that would not be out of place in Sydney’s Recital Hall. Maybe that’s one of the reasons we ended up on the Park lane section of the Monopoly board.

Approaching its 20th year, this Orange music institution continues to attract performers and punters for a great night out.

The last 4loor on Saturday 3 June was no exception.

Act One, 95-year-old Max Fricke got people out of their seats to samba and sway to the sounds of his Bandoneon. Act Two was Euripi, a husband & wife duo from Mudgee, who played wistful acoustic original numbers sprinkled with covers. Their delivery of ‘Down Under’ took an interestingly alternative path from its upbeat celebratory tone, to one with a post-apocalyptic feel. Act three, Stu Tyrell from Sydney, laid out his Celtic Blues armed with his steel guitar and some tasty slide work, exciting the crowd all through his set especially on Johnny Cash’s ‘Cry, Cry, Cry’ and Motorhead’s ‘Ace of Spades’.

Act four, The Crooked Mile, transported the audience along a sound-scape veering from Led Zepplin’s ‘Kashmir’ to a trip through some of Jethro Tull’s ‘Songs from the Wood’ and other spicy aural places in between – much to the delight of those up

on the floor enjoying themselves in a good old-fashioned freak out.

A fifth gear was used, allowing Icarus to put things into overdrive with their acoustic set. There was plenty of drive in their rhythm coming from the bass, whilst the acoustic guitars worked some good sounds that crossed between 70’s Westcoast rock with hints of 90’s Grunge, topped with a strong engaging vocal delivery on their set of all original material.

4 on the 4loor is a testament to the great work of Jon Carter and crew for continually putting these shows together. This creates a platform allowing the depth of talent in Orange to shine alongside artist from other areas. If you haven’t been to one of these shows for a while get along and feast at the musical smorgasbord which is served on the first Saturday of each month at The Victoria Hotel.
