Last weekend gave us a sniff of Spring with two glorious days. My wife and I took the opportunity to go for a drive to Cowra to have lunch at the café at the Japanese Garden. I have to say it was a most enjoyable experience and I scored a few brownie points for suggesting it. It’s not the first time we’ve done that and each time we haven’t been disappointed. The café is very well run, food and presentation are excellent and the view over the gardens is unique, very happy to recommend the experience if you are looking for something to do and have a few hours to spare one weekend.

It’s a big week for us next week, we’ll be celebrating 12 years of our publication in Orange. We’re not doing anything too special, but we are going to give our readers the opportunity for a little bit of fun and excitement. Check out the page mentioning our Birthday in this issue and make sure you cut out and keep the coupon at the bottom until next week’s issue. Sneaky eh?

I want to also mention a Business Forum that’s coming up on Wednesday September 11 in Orange. It’s the second Forum of its type put on by the Put Orange First Group and all local business owners, especially retailers, are encouraged to attend. It starts at 5.30pm and is being held upstairs at the Park View Hotel. It’s a free event. I’m pretty passionate about what this group is trying to do and to that end, I have written a thought-provoking piece in support. You can read what I have to say in this issue.

3 Much needed things will start to be addressed in a more-timely manner.

What sort of O-Town person are you?

Are you one of those people who likes things the way they are here and now in Orange, someone who doesn’t want to see more people move here, someone who likes the quieter lifestyle that a country town like Orange has been known for, someone who doesn’t want to see Orange get too big, too successful or too busy?

Or are you one of those people who doesn’t mind seeing Orange grow a bit, but more the let’s-only-do-what-we-have-to type?

Or are you one of those people who wants to see Orange grow and prosper on all fronts, and the faster the better?

Well, in my judgement, we only have one choice - to grow and prosper and the faster the better. What I personally may want has nothing to do with it, what we need to do as a community is the only thing that matters, and Orange needs to grow if we want to survive in this changing and challenging world.

Let’s stop and think about why that is for a moment.

Again, and still in my judgement, change is constant, and progress is relentless. That leaves us with no choice but to embrace the future and grow the best way we can.

Let me explain it this way…

Remember the story of the three little pigs?

Imagine we’re the pigs, progress is the wolf, and the three houses are the different ways we handle progress. Straw being do little or nothing, sticks being do something, bricks being do what we need to do to shield us from any of the dangers that progress presents and thrive at the same time.

The first pig (like the don’t-want-to-change person) built his house of straw and the wolf

just blew it away. This pig lost everything.

The second pig (like the let’s-only-do-whatwe-have-to person) built his house of sticks and although it took longer and more effort, the wolf eventually blew it away as well. This pig too, lost everything.

The third pig (like the let’s-grow-proactively person) built his house of bricks and the wolf simply couldn’t blow it away. This pig survived and in the story I read, the third pig actually took in the first two pigs and offered them a home as well.

The moral of the story is progress is something we can’t ignore, can’t avoid and are better off embracing. Hope is not a plan and we need to plan for progress. The price of not doing so will be high!

Is Orange building a house of sticks?

I think it’s fair to say that Orange is not building our house with straw, that is to say we can hardly be accused of doing nothing.

I think it’s also fair to say that we’re not building our house with bricks, that is to say we’re not doing everything we could do to proactively embrace progress, to keep the wolf at bay.

I think we’re building our house with sticks, that is to say we’re doing something but not enough to put us well out of progress’s (or harm’s) way.

Is it time to start replacing sticks with bricks?

A group called Put Orange First was formed earlier this year with the express aim of looking at ways that we could make Orange a better place to live for everyone. Orange is a great place, and lots of wonderful things are happening here, but there are also a lot

of areas where this group believes things could be done better, particularly in the area of supporting and promoting our shopping and business sectors. The group also believes there are opportunities to build a stronger relationship between locals and local businesses so that Orange as a whole can benefit.

You’ll likely hear from Put Orange first about the concept of being a ‘localist’ in the coming months.

The group has been meeting weekly all year while at the same time working to build relationships with our Council, the Business Chamber, Orange 360 and others in an effort to see us all pulling in the same direction for the benefit of Orange.

Much has been achieved since the group started and it’s fast approaching a time when much of that groundwork will bear fruit.

An Ideas Forum for business owners was held back in June and over 50 local business people attended. Put Orange First is holding a follow up forum on Wednesday September 11th from 5.30pm at the Parkview Hotel and it is hoped even more business owners will attend, particularly retailers as Put Orange First is working on a Christmas in November concept to bring to the CBD. If you’re a business owner, and especially if you’re a retailer, Put Orange First would love to see you come along. There’s no cost and your attendance will show Put Orange First that you too want to see us building our great city with bricks, not straw or sticks and for everyone’s benefit, not just certain sectors.

3 The good word about Orange will continue to spread and gain momentum.

3 Orange will become a preferred destination for more visitors, more often for more reasons.

3 Orange locals will clearly see why it’s so important to support local businesses.

3 With more people coming to Orange more often, fewer businesses will close.

3 With more locals buying from local businesses, fewer people will lose their jobs.

3 Business confidence will be restored and business owners will invest more into their businesses and into other City building initiatives.

3 The local economy will be stronger as more money flows.

3 Local infrastructure projects will happen more often, and with less dependence on grant funding.

And so it goes on…….

WHEN DID BARISTA BARS REPLACE PUBS AS OUR SOCIAL CENTRE? What year was it, that coffee shops and barista bars replaced the church, the pub, and the picture theatre as the centre of Australia’s social and cultural life?

Some of us remember when “coffee” was a powdered brown matter kept in a jar or tin that you would drag from the back of the cupboard for guests who didn’t drink tea or beer.

Largely-forgotten brands like Nescafe, International Roast, Pablo, Maxwell House, and Harris were the only coffee most Australians knew. Accompanying my mother on her weekly shopping expeditions as a pre-schooler, her special treat was first stop at the local milk bar where I would have a meringue and milkshake while she luxuriated over a “Vienna”; freshly-ground coffee topped with a generous dollop of fresh cream.

RHONDA “Art has been a part of my life since I was a very small child. All through school I’d won art prizes and that sort of thing, so I was continually doing art. I had a grandmother who was an artist and it came out in my sister and me and my brother — he does sculpture.

“I went to boarding school here in Orange, then to the National Art School at Taylor Square, Sydney; I

was there for five years and did my Diploma of Education.

“I taught in Parkes and Narrabri and then I taught design in England.

I came back to Orange as a married woman and taught at Kinross, later Kinross Wolaroi.

“I also had a boutique for 25 years called La Bottega in Byng Street.

“Since I retired in 2000, I’ve been full time artist, I’m a landscape painter

and printmaker.

“I travel a lot and the colours of the Australian outback are amazing, it certainly is inspiring and one of my favourite places to go.

“For me, art is an addiction; I have to paint nearly every day. It is in the blood, I guess. I like to exhibit, I like to show people what I’m doing and I hope they can understand what I’m doing — I think Art is to be shared.”

Even up to the time of the Sydney Olympics in the year 2000, American and European journalists would often appear in local media to loudly-complain about the paucity of decent coffee for sophisticated overseas visitors that would undoubtedly flood our shores for this august event. Now, every work-place tea-room has its own coffee-maker!

Regional city’s like Orange once proudly considered how they were served by a pub on every CBD corner with labourers and tradies spending their “smoko” (another lost tradition) discussing the merits, atmosphere, and quality of beer as well as the demeanour and honesty of the licensed publican of each establishment. Discussion is now likely to revolve around the attributes of various roasters, blends, and single-origin beans.

But the extent to which this phenomena has overtaken our culture in such a short period of time struck home the first time I took my sons to a first-grade football match since I was a

teenager myself in the 1970s and 1980s. To my shock, the rough concrete-floored bars with men spilling beer all-over other fans as they unsteadily-manoeuvred their way up “the hill” of the Sydney Cricket Ground, had largely-been replaced with neat barista bars in each grandstand selling a range of fresh coffee concoctions in environmentallyfriendly recyclable cups.

I remember commiserating with a long-time friend upon their informing me that that they had decided to give-up their publican’s licence. “There’s just not the demand anymore; Orange is full of coffee shops now, that’s where everyone goes!” Who doesn’t know the “coffee-snob” who regularly and obsessively rates the freshness of milk, temperature, serving crockery, quality of bean, strength, and amount of froth, of every coffee as if they were a wine judge carefully-assessing each vintage in a competition?

But what is the cost of this newobsession to our bank balance? A take-away coffee a day runs out to $1500 per annum. An Australian investor and financial writer were both recently pilloried for suggesting that young Australians were not in a position to afford their own homes because of their expensive addiction to coffee shops. “When I was trying to buy my first home, I wasn’t buying smashed avocado for $19 and four coffees at $4 each,” one opined.

My barber (yes, barber!) regularly grumbles to me about the young hipsters who hover each morning around the street barista bars of Orange. But it was only the other day that I saw another boutique enterprise has moved into the petite shopfront next door; it is a trendy, tiny wine bar with candles stuck in old wine bottles. In the end, perhaps, everything comes full-circle.

Benji’s pressies

It’s a great sacrifice, to be sure, but young Benjamin Howe in a special gesture is layingdown his toys for his fellow children.

He has just donated all the presents from his school-friends for his seventh birthday to Ronald McDonald House at Orange.

Benjamin invited the whole crew from his Year One cohort at Kinross Wolaroi, plus sports colleagues, Mum’s Groups, and friends to his recent party at Flip-Out with the understanding that all presents would go to families staying at the hospital care accommodation on Forest Road.

“We had so many kids coming to the party; he

invited the whole school Year One classes, there were 77 children in all,” Benji’s dad, Dr David Howe explained. “We thought, ‘he’s going to get a lot of presents’ from this,” David said.

“So when we first mentioned it, we decided that he can keep all the presents from Mum and Dad and family, but all the others we will donate to Ronald McDonald House,” he explained.

Su and I do a lot of volunteer work with Camp Quality so we thought about how to support others,” David said.

know, they get a present, play with it a few times and then it sits there as a dust-getter,” she said.

The idea was a hit with parents coming to the party with a variety of both boys and girls presents given on the day.

“Everyone knew they would be handed on to Ronald McDonald House,” David said. “I think the response shows the goodness of Benji’s friends,” Su added.

Presents ranged from soccer balls, “Nerf” guns to Lego, Board games, and classics like dominoes and a “Barrell of Monkeys” to diaries and even toy boxing gloves and some monies.

“I don’t want to hand-over this one!” Benji said,

having second thoughts about one particularly enviable toy.

Rebecca Walsh from Ronald McDonald House said that the gifts would be put to good use over the coming months.

“I think it shows absolutely amazing generosity to support these families,” she said. “We can send each family with a child home with a special gift,” she said. “Small things make such a big difference.”

David also pointed-out the benefit to the giver as well as the receiver of such gestures. “The kids from school as a class get to know about giving, caring and sharing,” he concluded.

“In the garden we built, we put lots of food and vegetables, because it was a much cheaper way to feed the children and it was healthy and the kids were involved in it,” says Fiona, “Then we had an open day and let people come through our place and one person said it was such a great permaculture garden and I didn’t know what that was. I looked it up and realised it was permaculture that we were doing!”

From then on, Fiona has been hooked. She sought out courses and is now a qualified permaculture consultant and teacher. She has spread her love of permaculture to a demonstration garden at Bissy’s Café and a permaculture education centre at Cargo.

“I love talking about it,” says Fiona, who holds monthly free introduction to permaculture sessions and will help anyone

“I’ve got a real passion for permaculture, because I think permaculture is going to save the world,” says Fiona Rossiter, registered nurse, café owner, former Orange City Councillor, children’s author and mother of eight.

“I know that is a big call, but I do dream big! The future is looking quite bleak because we live in such a throwaway world and the Earth won’t be able to cope with it. We need to regenerate the Earth; we need to care for it!

And that, says Fiona, is where permaculture comes in.

Permaculture is essentially a set of design principals for creating a more sustainable way of life.

“I thought, it is all well and good holding paid courses, but that will only get to so many people and I think everyone deserves that opportunity to learn and understand it… and taste how sensational the food is when it comes straight from the ground!

“My passion now, into the future, is to educate people and teach them about permaculture.”

Fiona runs information meetups at Bissy’s Café as well as hands on activities at their Cargo permaculture education centre, which is also home to a community garden, open for anyone who wants to get their hands dirty.

“I’ve always loved bringing people together and creating community. There’s so many people out there who are quite lonely and don’t have anywhere to go or things to do — so how do you meet other people? You can go to the pub, but it is not always the best place to meet people… so that was another reason for this,” says Fiona.

“This is an opportunity for people to come together, get skills and it is really quite therapeutic… It is physical, you can take in what nature is providing for you, you’ve got other people to talk to, you learn great things and it is just so good for the body and for the mind!

Our local skyline has featured this remarkable piece of equipment over recent months and it’s been fascinating to see it and if you’ve been there at the right time, watch it swing around. I always got an erie feeling when the beam started swinging and especially when it extended over the main street. Too many disaster movies I suspect.

It was a bit of an attraction while it was there, now the attraction will be the new look City Centre that the crane played a role in. We’re all looking forward to seeing that!

Volunteers the “nuts

and bolts”

Volunteering comes in all shapes and sizes; and Orange City Council has a job for anyone interested in helping others.

“We’re making a renewed push for residents to get in touch with Council; we’re always on the lookout for new volunteers, there’s always more opportunities than volunteers,” Council Communications Officer Allan Reeder explained.

“We have 30 community committees looking for the expertise and interest of the community,” he said. “There are a range of activities we offer with hundreds of volunteers working in the area.”

“We have lots of volunteering opportunities available with many of our agencies. These range from community service teams to Meals on Wheels, to Gallery volunteers and Friends of the Botanical Gardens,” Allan said. “These are keen gardeners that help with running of the Gardens.”

One of Council’s major volunteer initiatives is

the “Choices at Home” service that aims to help older residents stay in their own houses longer.

“This can involve something as simple as a phone call a day to an older resident,” he said. “This allows older residents to know, ‘If I fall over, someone is going to know,’ or as simple as taking someone elderly shopping.

“There’s also Meals on Wheels where Council coordinates hundreds of meals a day for people living at home,” Allan said.

He says that there are many reasons for people to get involved with volunteering.

“There are a range of benefits to helping others.”

“There are people who are new to town and want to get to know the place. We even have people who are new to Australia and offer to help with our migrant services team as a way to get to know the community.”

He said that many of these Council Services simply would not exist without the support of local volunteers. “Volunteers are the nuts and bolts of getting that work done,” he said.

Lucy Trommestad believes volunteering with Orange City Council is a way of giving back to her community.

Recently helping-out on a Council-sponsored XPT trip to Wellington for a group of Orange residents, she gets out of volunteering as much as she puts in.

“It gives me lots of pleasure, it’s fun and you get to meet lots of lovely people,” she explained.

For Coleen Gander, who weekly takes advantage of Council’s day-trips away for the elderly, the advantages are obvious. “I live on my own and this gets me out to meet people and have a good time,” she said. “We don’t care where we go, as long as we get out of the place,” she said. “We have a lovely time, a few

OPPORTUNITY AT MEDITATION CENTRE

Stress, as they say, is the new smoking, with a senior Buddhist Monk gravitating to the Central West with a message of hope in September.

“Dealing with Stress in the Modern Age” is the theme of this special event at the Molong Meditation Centre (“KYSL”) with His Eminence Dekhung Gyaltsey Tulku Rinpoche the guest speaker.

“Rinpoche will share his profound and compassionate knowledge for how individuals can best cope with life’s stresses, as well as discussing what it is to be a Buddhist and how they practice and live their daily lives,” a spokesperson for the Centre said.

Rinpoche is a senior lecturer and administrator at Rumtek, a Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism in Sikkim, India where he is also involved in the training of monks.

“The event is for anyone who feels they are rushing around in circles, trading material success for inner contentment,” the spokesperson explained.

With plenty of fundraising events over the 18-month drought for hard-hit farmers and their families, what about the farm animals also suffering?

Helping farming families look after their dogs, cats, chickens, and other pets is the aim of the “Dog-Food Drop” launched in Orange for its second successful year.

Community-spirited local organisations are supporting this unique pet-food service with organiser Larlee Ramsay aiming to collect tonnes of dried dog-food and more for hungry farm animals.

“Last year we raised 2500kg of dried dogfood, this year I’m aiming at 3000kg,” Larlee said at the event’s launch at Orange Real Estate.

“Shoppers and others wishing to donate the food can bring it here,” Larlee said of the realtor on the corner of Sale and Summer Streets, one of the main supporters of Larlee’s push.

Other supporters of the special event include Canobolas Auto One, Furneys Stock Feeds, and

“Tommy” from the “Hay Run Tommy’s Truck” who delivers stock feed and other goods to desperate farmers.

“Tommy goes everywhere supplying the farmers with feed as well as dogfood, and food hampers just to keep the families going,” Larlee explained.

She has set herself a timetable of four–six weeks to raise the three tonnes of dog-food. “We’re also prepared to take cat food, chicken scratch, lick blocks for cattle, and even worming tablets,” Larlee pleaded.

Local animal welfare group, the Central West Animal Rescue Service will also be recipient of the pet-food donated by generous locals. The support though is two-way with the Service also donating excess food and other items surplus to their own needs to the “Dog-Food Drop”.

“I run the Central West Animal Rescue Service and we help each other out; it’s a joint-team thing,” Jasmine Smart from the Service said.

Shoppers are urged to buy an extra pet-food item and drop it down to Orange Real Estate on the corner of Sale and Summer Street or Canobolas Auto One at 101 Peisley St to do their bit to help-out our hard-pressed farmers.

Those wishing to support this event can also dropoff pet food to Furneys Stock Feeds at 245 McLachlan Street. They can also buy a large bag of dog-food from Furneys either in-person or by calling 6362 2896.

“The farmers are really asking for help, and this is a great way we can support them,” Larlee said. “If we can feed their dogs, it’s one less thing they have to buy. It gives them more money to feed themselves,” Larlee concluded.

They used to be called Town Clerks. Now General Manager is out, and Chief Executive Officer is in with Orange Council looking for a new administrative head for the city.

s Colin Young from Orange Residents and Ratepayers Association believes that for a CEO, honesty and integrity should be the first attributes considered and an independent.

An extraordinary Council meeting will then be held on Tuesday, September 10 where the full Council will have the opportunity to put the top two or three candidates through their paces.

Cr Tony Mileto believes that the best candidate should have both administrative skills and vision with new ideas for the City coming from the elected councillors, the Mayor, and the Deputy Mayor.

“Predominantly their role is to administer the work of the Council…We need to make sure the right person gets the job; rather than just filling the role,” he said. Ï think as long as we get the right person as an administrator; they will have their vision and they will then be able to sell that vision to us,” Cr Mileto explained.

He says that the challenge facing Council’s first-ever CEO revolves-around maintaining stability within Council.

“They need to understand the beast itself; there’s not a bucket of money;

we have to target the most significant grants,” he said.

He said finishing the Southern Distributor Road, the “gateway to the new health precinct” was a major project that would improve access to Orange and its services.

Chair of Council’s Employment and Economic Development Policy Committee; he wants the new CEO to take a particular interest in economic growth for the city and surrounds. “He or she will want to have a say on major projects,” he said.

“Economic development and employments opportunities should also continue to grow, and we need to attract new residents,” Cr Mileto said.

He said that the continuing challenge to local retailers from online shopping should be a priority for Council in the future.

“We need to upgrade the central business district (CBD) to meet the challenges of online shopping; we need

And the name-change for our mostimportant bureaucrat is significant for indicating the change to a wider scope of operation, Councillor Joanne McRae believes.

“I think it reflects that broader role that we’re looking for in a modern corporate environment,” Cr McRae said.

For Cr McRae, the ideal candidate will be both a good hands-on manager and an ideas person for Council’s 400 staff and $170 million annual budget.

“Philosophically, the leader of a Council needs to balance a managerial and administrative spirit with an entrepreneurial spirit, a balance between both,” she explained.

Cr McRae believes that the newly-minted Chief Executive Officer will be taking-over from former General Manager, Garry Styles, a reasonably well-run city.

“Broadly speaking, Orange is tracking well; but we will need to know how to grow sustainably,” she said.

“Orange is really booming, but how do we manage growth in a sustainable manner while managing our water assets and not encroaching on productive agricultural land?

“How do we continue to manage quality of life, lifestyle, and liveability?” she asked.

Orange City Life believes that the recruitment agency enlisted to lead the hunt for a new Council head has whittled a good field of candidates down to a short-list of about seven who are to be interviewed on Monday, September 2 by a group of four councillors, a representative of the recruitment agency,

to improve accessibility to shopping; our retailers have to be competitive,” Cr Mileto said.

They are working to a Masterplan.

Orange on the other hand has umpteen developers all going in different directions …It’s very much more of a piecemeal approach.”

“The really critical thing is you come up with a good plan and stick to it,” he said.

He points to the increasing development around the North Orange bypass that he says was originally intended to be an alternative route for heavy vehicles, but which has become a boom satellite suburb of the city with increasing congestion.

“The first thing they did was put traffic lights in and allowed developers to build estates there,” he said.

Final word on the search for Council’s first CEO can go to founding Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Herbert Cole “Nugget” Coombs who once described the role of the bureaucrat as “to make other people’s dreams come true.”

The question is, will Orange be able to find the bureaucrat to make the Council and residents’ dreams come true?

Under 18’s Dance Party to build up our spirits — JONATHAN ROE —

“To me music is like one language that everybody knows no matter where you are from,” says 15-year-old Gianrico Wynn.

A budding DJ and musician, Gianrico has been playing music ever since he could hold a trumpet. He is now looking to share his love of electronic dance music by holding an under 18s dance party for Orange teens, all while raising money and awareness of youth mental health issues.

“I’d always been aware of depression and anxiety, especially here in rural areas and with the drought at the moment, but a few months ago my mate took his life and that really hit me,” said Gianrico.

“I thought, geez, I know I’m only 14 but what can I do to help? Well, I thought my passion for music and DJing can surely help… kids love parties and so I thought I can DJ at that party and we can get Headspace involved, make it a charity event and we can raise awareness and at the same time and hopefully people can have a good time.”

The Under 18s event, which will be held at the Orange Showground Agricultural Pavilion on September 14, is strictly drug and alcohol free, with a percentage of the profits going to youth mental health organisation Headspace.

“Kids are talking about it, which is great. And Headspace have been very positive about it and have been supporting us, which has been awesome,” said Gianrico.

“In Orange, I find personally, there is not really anything for teens — there is the pubs for 18 plus but nothing for younger kids — which is why I really wanted to do this.”

Gianrico was first introduced to electronic dance music by his older brother and has been making his only music since he was 11.

“I found out the world of DJing and I loved it! I got immersed in it and started DJing myself… but I started really getting into it the last two years,” he said.

“It is just so different; it tells a story without needing words and there is something about it that just clicks with me, I honestly can’t explain it… When I hear it, I get moving and I love it. It just brings up my spirits and I find it brings up everyone else’s spirits. I feel like I can tell so much of a story through my music.”

FOR HISTORIC SCHOOLHOUSE — BY DAVID DIXON —

wo-thousand-and-nineteen is a milestone year for the historic Springside schoolhouse as the local progress association prepares to celebrate 140 years since classes began.

The building itself was completed in 1878 to serve the communities of Spring Hill and Spring Terrace after much lobbying by residents to the Council of Education.

The single teacher school operated continuously for 93 years until dwindling enrolments saw it close at the end of 1972.

For the last 19 years, the Springside Progress Association has been working hard to maintain this little piece of local history and are planning a big family day to mark the historic anniversary.

“We are hoping to have photos and memorabilia from the schooldays,” said Springside Progress Association secretary and schoolhouse historian Helen Isbester.

Helen has been trawling through historic newspapers and other documents looking for items relating to the history of the school and the striking building, which was built from bricks made on site.

“We are looking for any memorabilia from the period 1879 to 1972 that we could borrow to display on the day,” said Helen.

“That could include photos, school activities, or stories from ex-students, parents, teachers of any residents from the Springside area.”

The birthday celebrations will take place on the schoolhouse grounds (corner of Cadia Road and Kearl Road, Springside) 22 September. All are welcome.

“Apart from a roast lunch, there will be activities for the kids; the sort of things that they might have participated in during the school’s early days, like egg-and-spoon, sack and three-legged races as well as the traditional tug-o-war,” said Helen.

Phone technician Sam Kennedy has some sage advice for locals wanting to protect their smart phones, devices, and tablets: keep them covered!

“Put your phone in a case, definitely, with a good screen protector!” he says from his workplace at “Need A Nerd” in Lords Place.

Sam daily sees the damage wrought on the new technologies that have transformed our lives, but which themselves are fragile and highly-sophisticated equipment.

“People come in with their smart phones, tablets, devices. You know, the things they can’t live with, can’t live without,” he explained.

“I’m always rushed; a lot are battery and malware issues…A lot are self-inflicted, but others are things like updates that go wrong,” he explains.

Some though, he laughs are of the “dog ate my homework,” variety. “Oh yeah, dogs have eaten plenty of phones and SD cards, that sort of thing. I had one that had been run-over by a truck… the owner wanted me to try and save his data,” Sam added.

Keeping family-friendly hours, “Need a Nerd” is not open at all on weekends to allow staff their own down-time but runs extended hours during the week of 8.30–6pm. “We work in shifts basically, some have a late start and a late finish,” he explained.

Rush times, outside of the usual bedlam, is “just after and just before Christmas”.

“Everyone wants their devices back as soon as, that’s just the nature of the work,” Sam says philosophically.

An Ideas Man Some say they’re for ‘bogans’, I disagree Many of you in readerland know that when I’m not working as Clark Kent as I type this column, my Superman alter-ego ( ) spends his time behind the school gates, often in front of teenagers (amongst varied jobs on campus) spruiking the merits and wonder of all things Mathematical. We’ll get back to that shortly.

Driving home last weekend from the Knee of Syd after the City 2 Surf (dodging snow!), I again marvelled at the giant statue that greets you upon entering Bathurst from the East. The Big Gold Panner. We’ve admired him for thirty years. Built in 1979, he proudly stands over 5mtrs tall. Envious. I do love all those ‘big’ things around our wide brown land, and we visited a lot of them in the 90s.

The Big Prawn in Ballina, Big Funnel Web at Jamberoo, Golden Guitar in Tamworth and of course the most famous of all – The Big Banana at Coffs Harbour (my gran bought me the t-shirt at age 6, I wore it until it fell apart). Down in Kiama, those wags built a 5 metre by 1m ‘statue’ to protest against the lack of recycled water – yep, A Big Poo. Sure, we have an awesome Big Flag as you enter Orange, but it doesn’t have that same ring as a Prawn, Guitar or even a Giant Poo, does it? Could we do better? I reckon so.

Whilst our City is called Orange (after the Prince, etc), we’re not exactly known for our citrus delights. So, a Giant Orange on the outskirts of town to greet the tourists as they drive in won’t work. But then, neither would our ‘signature’ fruit, the apple. That’s already been done in places like Batlow, Tassie and New York. Which brings me back to maths.

Whilst not all young learners agree about the ‘wonder’ of maths, those of us with chalk in our hand continue to fight the good fight when it comes to promoting the awe of Trigonometry, Calculus and Exponential Growth and Decay. The topic just covered

A Big Wine Bottle on the edge of town?

You’re an ideas man, Mr T. with a bunch of 13 year olds was “Ratios, Rates & Scale Drawing”, in which we explored the thrilling speeds achieved in both km/h and metres per second by Usain Bolt himself. One of the questions in their quiz also gave them a tiny drawing of the new ‘attraction’ in town, and they had to work out how big it would actually be if we built it there near the Big Flag. What is the new statue you ask? The Big Wine Bottle, of course!! On their quiz, the scale drawing was just a few cm on the page, and their conversion gave it a massive real-life height of 19.5m! It would be seen for miles on your way into town! We’d have the most famous ‘big thing’ in all the land. Wait a minute, you say, isn’t there already a big wine bottle in both the Hunter Valley and in Daly Waters in the NT? Pfffttt, at just 5m and 3m respectively, our 19.5m big bottle of booze will dwarf all others.

We weren’t promoting the forces of alcohol in class, before you ask. The students were able to see it was all about the promotion of our wonderful little town of Orange. Now, to the other ‘big’ questions.

Red or White? Pinot or Chardonnay?

Perhaps a replica ’98 Cabernet from my fave place just out of town (you know who you are) would be the ticket. Anyway, as I did my best to turn the Padawan learners into Mathematical Jedi Masters, one said “A Big Wine Bottle on the edge of town? You’re an ideas man, Mr T”. Indeed. Royalties my way please.

SCARE CAMPAIGNS HAVE NO PLACE IN POLITICS

The latest stage of Orange’s Southern Feeder Road is set to go to tender in the coming months after the completion of an independent review of the environmental impact of the proposed road.

Thanks to $3 million from the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program, Stage 3 of the project will involve an upgrade from Elsham Avenue through to the Mitchell Highway.

The two-kilometre section of the road follows Dairy Creek Road, alongside the Leewood Industrial Estate, to create a new intersection

with the highway.

The completion of the Review of Environmental Factors means the advanced design of the road can now be finalised, with tenders expected to be called in September.

When completed, this upgrade road will deliver a link between the highway on Orange’s eastern outskirts through to a key industrial estate, the health precinct and Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations. The total Federal Government commitment to date is $6.45 million.

One of the privileges of being a local member is being able to share moments like that with new citizens and their families.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

Our community has always been very open and welcoming to new arrivals.

A number of Federal Government grant opportunities are currently available for schools, students and community organisations in Calare.

Unfortunately in the final days of the recent federal election campaign we saw the Shooters Party candidate, along with their leader, attempt an immigration scare campaign which culminated in the appalling targeting and insulting of our local migrant community.

We recently had another wonderful citizenship ceremony in Orange where we welcomed new Australians from all over the world.

With local council elections looming next year, let’s hope we never see a repeat of that type of campaigning in this area again.

Vale TIM FISCHER We lost one of Australia’s finest last week with the passing of former Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Farrer, the Hon Tim Fischer AC. Tim was a giant of The National Party, he was a giant of Australian politics, but more than that, he was a champion for regional and rural communities.

He was a proud Australian who embodied the very best qualities of loyalty, kindness, empathy, courage and humility. He will be missed and my thoughts go out to his family at this time of loss.

I will be attending his state funeral in Albury on Thursday.

LOCAL SCHOOLS COMMUNITY FUND Applications are currently open for the Local Schools Community Fund, closing 5pm, Monday 30 September 2019.

Through the fund, the Federal Government is providing up to $200,000 to each Federal electorate. Schools in Calare are encouraged to apply for funding for one project with grants available between $1,000 and $20,000.

Where a school is composed of multiple campuses, the school or campus may submit an application for each campus.

STRONGER COMMUNITIES PROGRAM Expression of Interest applications are currently open for Round 5 of the Australian Government’s Stronger Communities Program closing 5pm, Friday, 6 September.

Each electorate has a total of $150,000 in funding that can be allocated

The Nashdale Hall received $10,000 through the Stronger Communities Program for an extension

to a maximum of 20 small capital projects. These projects can range from upgrading the local community hall or sporting facility, building new bike paths, or providing essential equipment for the local SES. The grant amount will be up to 50 per cent of eligible project costs, with the maximum grant amount being $2,500 and the maximum $20,000.

Applications will be assessed by a Community Consultative Committee, with nominated applicants then invited to apply. Please note you can only submit a formal application if you have been invited to apply.

THE GREAT RATE DEBATE How often do we hear the cry “Orange rates are too high!” Whatever side of the argument you sit on, probably no one will ever be able to convince you otherwise. Be that as it may, we thought we’d ask a few people who know a bit more than us about rates to give us their thoughts. It will be interesting to see if what they say changes any local thinking.

RATES TOO HIGH? TELL US WHERE TO CUT, COUNCILLORS SAY Council’s rates too high?

— BY DAVID DIXON — Are Orange City Council’s rates too high? Then, Councillor Joanne McRae says, tell Council what services should be cut and where.

Whether Orange ratepayers are being unfairly-slugged by its Council is a matter of point-of-view and depending who you talk to.

Both Cr Tony Mileto and Cr McRae don’t believe we are, saying that Orange residents have a range of services not enjoyed by other towns.

Colin Young from Orange Residents and Ratepayers Association says however, that, yes, we do in fact pay high rates with Council utilising a range of accounting tricks to effectively raise rates under the cover of water and sewer contributions.

Cr McRae believes though that it is virtually impossible to compare rates from one town to the next because the burden of services provided by each Council area vary so much. “Everyone in NSW believes that they pay too much in rates,” she added.

Resident and ratepayers expectations of what Local Government can and should do has also expanded over the years at the same time that cost and responsibility shifting from State and Federal Governments has increased.

“I think our rates are appropriate and responsible for the services we provide… If you want lower rates; what do you want us not to do?” she asked.

“Sometimes people compare us to Sydney-based councils, but these councils don’t run an airport, don’t run cemeteries, childcare, and are not even responsible for water, “she explained.

She says that Orange also carries a financial burden as a drawcentre for residents from outside the city. “Blayney residents get the benefit of the airport, but Orange Council pays for that,” she said.

“We actually have 55,000 people in Orange per day, that’s an extra 10,000 additional people using our roads, pool, library.

“So, in effect one in five local government service-users are being subsidised by the other four. There are costs to that,” she said.

She says that rate-capping by the State Government for a number of years means that Councils cannot increase general rates above an inflationary-adjusted figure set by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal without asking for a “special rate variation”.

“Orange Council has not applied for a special rate variation for a number of years,” Cr McRae said.

“Our budget went on exhibition and we had a huge number of requests to fund play equipment in Wentworth Estate (in west Orange), but no-one said to cut spending… nobody ever asks Council to stop doing anything.”

She said that councils are being squeezed two ways; from increasing expectations on what the role of local government should be outside of their traditional role as service provider for “rates, roads and rubbish” and to increasing cost-shifting by State and Federal Governments.

She points to changes to the Companion Animals Act with Orange Council now required to build a new Council pound after being unable to find a private contractor to take on the role as an indicator of the added burdens on Council.

Councillor Tony Mileto says that, while Orange Council does have high rates, comparisons are not as black-and-white as they might seem.

“The Office of Local Government compares rates across the State. The latest figures are for 2016/17 and this has our average residential rate in the top 15 councils across the State,” Cr Mileto said.

“So, we’re up there, but we’re not the highest.”

Cr Mileto agrees with Cr McRae that like-for-like comparisons are not simple: “When looking at council rates, it’s important to compare apples with apples.”

“Councils across the State are very different in their population base, the area they cover, the amount of roads they have, the depth and quality of community services they provide… it’s about value.

“Are they getting something worthwhile for the money they pay in rates? Then it’s a matter of how they’re experiencing what Council provides.

“Do they go to the theatre/library/pool/airport/council childcare/ parks/sportsgrounds and, if so, do they perceive Council is involved in providing those services, or do they ‘just happen’?

“The quality of Orange’s (Council-provided) water might be invisible to them. They might never see the quality of Orange’s sewage disposal system. Waste collection and recycling mightn’t matter to them.”

He adds that Orange’ Council’s high-investment strategy in local infrastructure also has a cost: “There is significant Economic Development occurring in Orange at the present time, which requires a high level of infrastructure.”

“In simple terms; if ratepayers like what Council does, they think they’re getting value for money. If they’re angry with Council, they think rates are too high,” he concluded.

Colin Young from Orange Residents and Ratepayers Association says however, that, yes, we are a highly rate-charged residential community with increasing water and sewer levies used to bolster Council’s books.

“If you compare us to comparable local government areas; Tamworth, Albury, Wagga, Dubbo and Bathurst, we certainly have rates high in comparison to those towns,” Mr Young said.

He believes that while Council can say “We only increased general rates by so much,” heavy increases in recent years in water and sewerage charges are being used to bolster Council’s financial reserves.

“They’ve got $160 million in the bank, but we have quite a large slab of that in less than rolled-gold rated investments.”

He said that although water and sewerage charges must be used only for those services, “interest earned can be used for anything.”

Mr Young said that the reason why some councils are better run financially than others “comes down to good management.”

“Good management is able to keep the cost down on projects that are of benefit to the town.”

He said also that the lack of incentives for good-quality candidates means that there are only a limited number of suitably-qualified people who want to run for Council.

“Being a good councillor is such a huge impost on councillors. Very few can understand the business aspects of good management,” he opined.

“We have a crying need for really good candidates, we need more women who are prepared to come forward.

“Too many councillors can get tangled-up with ‘how many strands of wire in the fence for Council approvals‘ sort of questions. We need good people to represent themselves as good candidates,” Mr Young concluded.

Historic façade for the Orange City Centre’s Summer Street entrance has been fully-restored with the scaffolding that has covered the site for months coming-down in the next couple of weeks.

Redevelopment of the former Myer site is continuing apace with the grand-opening of the shopping arcade set-down before Christmas. Potential tenants have already applied for development applications to Orange City Council with the arcade to be fully-operational from day-one, a spokesperson familiar with the development explained.

“It will be opening in mid-November all in one go with all the retailers on-board,” the spokesperson said enthusiastically. “It will be a lot more than just a food court; it will be a mix of fashion, food and services with restaurants looking onto Post-Office Lane.”

The façade dates back to the middle of the 19th century as the frontage for two different Dalton Brothers enterprises with horsedrawn carts delivering goods through the laneway between the two buildings.

As the business expanded, in 1895 the Daltons joined the two buildings over the laneway, creating the grand facade that remains today.

Around the turn of the 20th century, the Dalton partnership was dissolved and the façade became the frontage for the locallylegendary Western Stores for a number of decades.

“The façade has been fully-restored with all its original features. It will look nice once it (the scaffolding) comes down and people will be able to see all the work that has gone on,” the spokesperson said.

The site has been vacant since the closure of the old Myer retail store in Orange in January 2017. “It looked like nothing was happening for a long time but now people can see that things are coming along… it’s all on track,” the spokesperson concluded.

HOME INSURANCE - IT PAYS TO ASK!

BY BOB HOLLAND I had an experience last week that I thought was worth sharing with our readers.

We received the annual renewal notice for our home and contents policy and noticed it was up about $150 on the previous year. Nothing unusual there but when I looked at the suggested value of our home, it was around $150,000 more than what I thought it would cost to replace our existing home, and that’s being generous.

My wife, as wives often do, doesn’t like spending money she doesn’t have to, and she urged me to ring the company and check it out. Me on the other hand, as husbands often do, although not that bothered, reluctantly did what I was told and rang.

Fortunately, our Insurer is one that when you ring, you press one or two buttons and get to talk to a human within 24

a minute or so. What a refreshing experience!

Anyway, the chap I spoke to was very helpful and when he did a few checks and balances he agreed that the replacement value for our home, even if it was 12 months away, would still be at least $150,000 less than they quoted.

The long and short of it was he quickly revised the rate down by $150, said he’d resend the notice and job was right.

How easy was that I thought?

The only pain I suffered, and it wasn’t much, was admitting to my wife that she was right…..again! $150 less is a serious saving so the morale of this story is, don’t just accept the replacement value an insurance company sends you, if you think it’s over the top, call them and talk it over, you too might save some real money like we did.

“There are so many agents out there — 50 million of them. It’s so hard to know which is good, which is bad, these sites offer a platform to see how everyone rates,” Jo explained.

McCarron Cullinane encourages all buyers, sellers, and vendors at the end of each sale to rate their own staff’s performance.

“We send the clients a request and then they send the review straight to ‘Rate my Agent’ so if they aren’t happy about something, you will know about it,” Jo explained.

The important thing, she says is that the site is independent, making it very hard for agents to amend or remove negative reviews. “You are seeing it from a previous client’s perspective. Also, the

agent has no control over these reviews.”

These sites are also important not just for rating agents performance, but also for finding an agent with the right mix of skills and expertise for your sale.

“These reviews can help customers see what sort of salesperson they might be dealing with,” Jo explained. “For instance, if they are local, if they are informative through the whole process, if they are compassionate, or if they are ‘all business,’” she said.

“One agent can be really good at communicating, another really good at selling, another good at dealing with vendors,” she explained.

The only commercial AM radio in Orange for a number of years, local station 2GZ was also resident for decades at the site. A small Sydney network station covering the former 2GZ AM bandwidth then broadcast from the old studios for some years after the station transferred to the FM signal.

“A big celebration needs a great performer and we are proud to have renowned guitarist and performer Lance Birrell joining us!” said Music at the Bowlo founder and coordinator Eleena Markrow.

Now residing in Dubbo, Lance is well known on the local country circuit and is a regular performer at Tamworth Country Music Festival every year.

Kicking off his career in the late 80s playing guitar at country music club shows in South Australia, Lance has been heavily involved in the Country music scene for many years.

He has worked and toured with artists such as Troy Cassar-Daley, Adam Harvey, Becky Cole and Keith Urban while he was in Australia.

“I play and listen to a lot of different music

and genres. I grew up learning to play the guitar to bands like the Shadows and had influences from bands like the Eagles and Dire Straits as a teenager in the 80s — I still perform 80s rock nights at certain venues!” said Lance.

“I am looking forward to performing for the people of Canowindra. I grew up in country South Australia so I have a great connection with country and rural people, who really enjoy live music and love to dance and have a great time… Looking forward to a great fun show!”

Lance just released a new single; an original instrumental track called “Trailblazer” and he will be performing it live on the day.

Sunday Sessions at The Bowlo, Sunday 1 September 3-6pm at the Canowindra Community Bowls and Recreation Club.

ou’re about to read a sentence that is unlikely to excite you but keep reading to get excited!

Over the next few weeks most working Australians will receive their annual superannuation statements… it’s likely you’re one of them.

For many people, these statements don’t make a lot of sense. That’s because super is complex and many, if not most, of the more than 10 million annual superannuation statements that will be delivered will be filed away in a drawer, tossed aside or even binned, without any real consideration or analysis.

I want you to make this the year that you change all that and the benefits are worth just a little effort. This little pot of gold is what you need to grow to maintain your lifestyle for 30 or 40 years after you retire!

By the time you retire, your super should be worth more than your house. Given how important it is to your financial future, your annual statement is your chance to give it some thought.

It contains a lot of information…

It will detail the fees you are paying, the insurance you have, how

I just met with some new clients who are in their early thirties.

By utilising the combined effects of higher returns, lower fees, compounding returns and time, I was able to show them how their retirement savings can be boosted by $1.2 million. That’s not a typo… $1.2 million more than they will have if they continue with their current superannuation situation.

This couple earns incomes that are likely to be similar to yours. They are not rich, but with SMART strategies that all the experts agree with, you can likely achieve something similar. The sooner you get cracking, the better your results will be.

I’m hoping that last year was the final year that you’ll ever ignore your super statement and that going forward you’ll be heard to yell, “Oh yay, I’ve got my annual super statement!” After all, it’s the best legal tax break we have available to us.

Here’s some free advice… the most important question to ask is, “Compared to what?”. In saying that, DON’T make decisions about your superannuation by looking at the best performing funds. Why? Well, because that sort of comparison is only telling you a small part of the story. It’s a little too in depth to explain here, but last week I explained it to another new client and received what is the greatest compliment I think I’ve ever had, “You are so logical, that makes perfect sense now that you’ve explained that to me”.

The Scots All Saints College Spring Fair is a day fun-filled day of great food, coffee, rides, music and entertainment for children of all ages to be held on Sunday, 8 September from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at All Saints Campus, Bathurst.

Hundreds of people have been coming along every year for the annual fundraiser which is one of the biggest events on our social calendar bringing together families from across the College, Bathurst, the region and State.

Head of College, Mr John Weeks and Scots All Saints College Parents’ and Friends’ Association, extends a warm welcome to local and regional families to join this day of festivities.

“Spring Fair is a wonderful community event and everyone is encouraged to come along for a fun, family day out. The collaboration between staff, teachers, parents and students who work together to host the event, showcases the tremendous community spirit at Scots All Saints College,” he said.

Spring Fair has become a family favourite as part of the Bathurst community for decades. All-Day Rides Passes are also available. This year, we have even more choice for young ones and older children including, unlimited dodgem cars, big and small mechanical rides, two amazing jumping castles, a big slide and laser tag.

All-Day Rides Passes can be pre-purchased online via the scotsallsaints website for $45 per person before 6 September or $50 at Spring Fair. Individual tickets are also available at the event.

Art Gallery, Millthorpe

Jowellyn Neville from Spring Hill, NSW is a very talented, focused and patient woman. Jowellyn has exhibited at May Raechelle Art Gallery previously and her detailed works have been very much admired.

Now she’s turning her hand to an even more time consuming and detailed art form – Pointillism.

Pioneered by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac in Paris in the mid 1880s as a reaction to impressionism’s freedom of expression, Pointillism demands a more scientific approach to art.

Perhaps Jowellyn can explain it best. “My focus for this exhibition is Pointillism. Dots. Many, many dots,” she says, “It seems to be the direction my art has taken over the last few months and I love it!”

Pointillism is a complex and detailed art form which requires much patience and concentration. Each piece is made up of intricate and repetitive actions, giving this style a meditative quality.

“In 2015 I was injured in a horse accident leaving me with significant brain trauma. It took almost 12 months to recover my hand control enough to continue my drawing, the tremors can still be an issue depending on the day.”

From there it has grown into a significant and integral part of her life. “When I first started drawing, I did not realise I had any talent whatsoever, it comes as quite a shock when people acknowledge my ability.”

“My inspiration comes from many places including the natural patterns and textures found in the local environment and my love of animals.” And this is evident in many of the pieces she has produced.

Get to the Pointillism! exhibition by Jowellyn Neville will be on display at May Raechelle Art Gallery in Millthorpe from Thursday 5 September to Sunday 27 October 2019.

Cadia Valley Operations (Cadia) recently announced a three-year partnership with the Clontarf Foundation for its Academy at Canobolas Rural Technology School. The partnership will ensure a $150,000 commitment over three years to support the continuing work of the Clontarf Foundation with Indigenous men at the school.

Cadia’s General Manager, Peter Sharpe, said the partnership is one that will provide lasting benefits to the Clontarf students, both current and future, and also provide meaningful pathways to future opportunities in the mining industry.

The Central West Women’s Forum has been established to give voice to women of the Central West who want to make a differe nce, achieve results and influence the choices ava ilable across the region.

On 14th September Dr. Sky e Saunders, a passionate and committed advocate for the advancem ent of gender equality, will address a Central West Women’s Forum evenin g event at Duntryleague. Dr Saunders is an Associate Professor in Law at the Australian National University, and an Employment/ Discrimination Solicitor. She pioneered the first research in Australia on sexual harassme nt in rural workplaces.

A spokeswoman for the Cen tral West Women’s Forum said ‘this is a great opportunity for women to com e together and support oth er women. It is a chance to hear from strong and vibrant women who are leaders in their field and provide opportuniti es to connect and learn from the experiences of others.’

Members of the Forum are linked by their desire to hav e a strong region known for its commitment to excellence in leadership and empowerment of women.

Whilst on a recent road trip through Victoria I visited a Pioneer Settlement and Museum. It was an educational and interesting experience with lots to see.

One thing that caught my eye was a lot of equipment of bygone days that had been preserved so future generations could appreciate how they were once used. Although attempts have been made to restore some items, much of the machinery was gathering dust.

That got me thinking of a verse in the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16) which says that all Scripture is …useful for teaching … and training for right living. Even the

Old Testament historical events have lessons for us today. For some people the Bible gathers dust on a bookshelf and it’s never read. For others, it’s an ornate Book which they received at some significant time in their lives, but still not read.

Although old, the Bible has been preserved through the centuries and is still useful for all people today and tomorrow. And it’s not just the words on the page that make it useful but because it is the living and active words of God (Hebrews 4:12). So dust if off and check it out.

Personally, I let such comments go through to the keeper, I prefer to look for and enjoy the half glass full, not the half glass empty. Have you actually asked Council why it appears this way?
