My wife and I are enjoying this week off at Norah Head on the Central Coast and I have to say it’s a delightful part of the world. Of course, the mild weather sees almost everyone up here still in shorts and t-shirts and last Sunday’s temperature range was 18 overnight to 21 during the day.

Ready to dual!

Like many people we watched the election coverage last Saturday, not because we wanted to, but because we couldn’t work out how to get the DVD to talk to the TV in the cabin we’re staying in, and every station felt the need to tell us about the election. I really don’t think every station needs to cover the same thing for hours on end. Thankfully, we’ve now sorted the technology issues and have ample DVD’s to amuse ourselves with.

Back on local things and there’s a couple of things to mention. Put Orange First is still chipping away with a number of issues and we’ve arranged a Small Business Ideas Forum for June 6. Local business owners can find out more about that in this issue.

Also, the change to our TV guide has, as expected, irked a few older readers and I have something to say about that in my column on page 5.

That said, we’re also looking at further modification after taking on board some of the comments received. I’m comfortable with the changes and the reasons we made them, but it appears we may be able to make the format a bit easier to read for some readers. There’s still a box or two to tick but you may notice another change as soon as next week.

A Heart Warming Meal

This week (Tuesday May, 21) marked 12 months of ‘Lunch in the Park’- a free, hot meal for members of the Orange community, who for one reason or another, are homeless or find themselves in need where they have little means of getting a decent meal.

taff and volunteers from Ashcroft’s IGA, Housing Plus and Live Better give their time freely to serve the meals. Local businesses including Baker’s Delight, The Village Bakehouse and Blayney Foods, all generously donate food each week, and the CWA donates the hall free of charge. Each of these acts of kindness make up the success that the Lunch in the Park has endured over the past year.

The team marked the anniversary with a delicious cake and received help from the Canobolas High School Girls Academy to help serve meals.

“I trained for radio at the Max Rowley Media Academy in Sydney - Max was one of the best in the business and put literally hundreds of people into radio and TV. My career took me from Sydney to Parkes and Tamworth, before returning to where I got my commercial radio start - 2GZ, which is where I spent the next decade.

Despite owning a business (local Ink and toner supplier Inakbility) these days, I still have a ‘side hustle’ as the lunchtime show host on Radio 2EL

I have been singing off and on all my life and these days I do a bit of guest vocals for The Tin Roof Big Band, which is based in Dubbo/Wellington It’s great to still be doing local radio after all these years and I’m grateful I’m allowed on air each day.

I’m most proud of my wife, Christine Ireland, who I have been married to for 18 years. She works as a practice clinical psychologist and she is passionate about her clients and their wellbeing. Her commitment to

people, and her passion for various social justice issues make me very proud of her.

I love living in Orange, running about town with deliveries each day reminds me why I love this city, seeing familiar faces and having a chat with customers is fantastic. I love my little family and our much- loved cat Ollie, who is possibly a little spoilt.

I support the Sydney Roosters and always have music playing. I also have a hankering to get some beehives at some point... we will see.”

Our Mission Statement includes words that say we want to bring out the best in people.

It’s something we aspire to but it’s not always easy to achieve.

Once again, as business owners often have to, I’ve made a business decision in the best interests of my family, my staff and the community at large, but despite our Mission Statement, it has had the opposite effect and brought out the worst in some people.

A few weeks back, I reduced the size and format of our TV Guide for sound business reasons. Not everyone appreciated my actions as some of the responses we received through our Thumbs feature show Thumbs down to new format for TV Guide in OCL, terrible for older people.

A big Thumbs down to the TV guides new format. I understand about trying new things and change doesn’t scare me but why go and do a silly thing like that? Having each day spread across 3 pages is just bizarre and does not make any practical sense whatsoever.

Obviously you’re trying to cut down on the number of pages in your paper but are not thinking of the older generation who look forward to your free paper and the TV guide inside.

It is too small, not enough information regarding if it is a repeat or not, and annoying to have to look over three pages for one day’s programs.

Absolutely awful.

Thumbs down to OCL for the new tv guide format how do you expect the older people to read it some very unhappy residents at local nursing home.

Thumbs down to the new look of the TV program in OCL is dismal. Are you going to start providing magnifying glasses with each issue? The print is so small, you can’t read it. Reducing the standard one day to a page to 3 pages of miniscule print, with no explanations of movies etc. is very difficult to read.

What I find very disappointing about responses like this is that people who say and think such things appear to have given absolutely no regard to my position. It’s as if I have no rights at all and that everything revolves around them and their interests.

Well I’m sorry, it doesn’t.

Giving everyone what they want, when they want it, in the way they want it, is not always possible. Sadly, we have created a society where too many people expect too many things for nothing and all that does is promote greed and selfishness.

I’d like to think we’re better than that and when we do have something taken away, we pause and think about the other person’s situation, rather than just think about ourselves and then lash out.

Orange City Life gives so many people so much pleasure, and I don’t want to change that.

However, we can only provide what our resources allow us to do, and it’s often a case of prioritizing. It cost me $1000 a week to provide the previous TV Guide, I can no longer afford that, for something only a small number of readers use, and given the way television programs and technology are these days.

BY JONATHAN ROE wo Orange teenagers have their eyes set on the world stage and this June Long Weekend will be facing our countries best Yu-Gi-Oh! players for a shot at the playing

in the World Titles.

For those unaware of the popular trading game, Yu-Gi-Oh! pits players against each other in a oneon-one duel using specially curated decks of cards each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The object of the game is to remove your opponent’s 8000 ‘life points’ but the gameplay encompasses practically limitless variables.

Jackson Rolfe and Caleb Buerckner have both been players for more than seven years and active competitors for the past four, travelling to tournaments in Sydney, Melbourne and further afield.

Like many Yu-Gi-Oh! players Caleb discovered the game through the animated television series from which it originated, while for Jackson it was the cards themselves that first took his interest.

“I’m a very competitive person,” said Caleb. “I enjoy the competition and meeting new people” “For me,” said Jackson. “I’m a very calculating person, I enjoy running numbers on things and this gives me an outlet to do that a lot.”

This June Long Weekend, Jackson and Caleb will travel to the Nationals in Brisbane, with Caleb playing for a spot at the invite only Oceanic Championships on the Monday.

“I’m already on the invited list,” said Jackson, “so I’m using the Nationals to test and experiment. Then we’ll be playing in the Oceanics to get Worlds invites.”

Yu-Gi-Oh! Tournaments can involve thousands of players, with matches being played from 8am right through to the evening.

“It all comes down to preparation,” said Jackson.

“Knowledge of what you are playing, knowledge of what you might play against, so you can recognise and deal with issues early. And a lot of it is also not

making stupid slip ups from being tired playing for ten hours straight on one day and coming in on the second day.”

“It takes hours and hours of playing over and over again until every detail is figured out, really, until you can’t do wrong,” added Caleb.

“We’ve been testing for a month and a half to two months now,” said Jackson. “It comes down to play testing so you know every possible situation and all the little intricacies that may come up… it is about testing enough that you don’t get surprised by it and just lose off not knowing what to do in a situation. It is about making sure that luck is as little a factor as possible.”

Sometimes, a small act of kindness can make a bigger difference than you think.

W

hen Orange Ex-Services Club executive assistant, Julie Archer, organised a wheelchair so World War II veteran David Birt could participant in this year’s Anzac Day march, she thought little of it.

But to Mr Birt it meant much more.

“It gave David the opportunity to go around the march with his mates, rather than sit in a bus and not be able to see anything,” said Graeme Harris, president of the local Naval Association of Australia sub-section of which

Mr Birt is a member.

Mr Birt, 93, is a Navy and Airforce veteran, who participated in the D-Day landings at Normandy. He is only one of two surviving World War II members of the local Naval Association.

To show their appreciation for Julie’s kindness, Naval Association members made a special presentation last week, much to her surprise.

“It really meant a lot, believe me,” said Naval Association secretary Tony White.

“David dearly wanted to march this Anzac Day, but we were having a bit of trouble organizing it. Julie organised a wheelchair for us, organised with the police to be able to get him down here, so he didn’t have far to walk and all the rest of it.

“We couldn’t have done it without her and this is just a small token to say thank you very much Julie and how much we appreciated it. David was over the moon and it made his Anzac Day for him.”

A LIFESTYLE WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD

A

Tree-changers Angela and Brendon Argyle always knew they’d return to the country one day, but didn’t expect they would find swapping suits and corporate jobs for gumboots and life on the farm so satisfying.

ngela and Brendon moved to Orange three years ago, settling on a 10-acre block off the Cargo Road. Brendan originally hails from rural New Zealand while Angela grew up on a farm outside of Tamworth, her parents having made their own treechange from Sydney decades ago.

Growing up, Angela says she and her three sisters complained endlessly about life on the farm and after school she couldn’t wait to move to the city.

Angela had spent 18 years working in financial planning, but after the birth of their first daughter Poppy, she and Brendon decided to finally make the move out of the city.

“It’s sort of ironic that all we ever said was, we wanted to live in Sydney and then you spend 18 years in Sydney, you want to get back to a regional town,” said Angela.

“And in Sydney I was full-on corporate: suits every day, makeup, out five days a week at dinner

parties, right into the whole Sydney lifestyle and loved every second of it.”

Looking at options for putting their block of land to good use, Angela decided upon Saffron after realising it’s potential here in the Orange climate.

“I wanted something a bit unique and Orange is perfect for saffron. Our land suited it, our soil suited it, the climate is absolutely perfect for saffron — it likes the four seasons and the cold,” said Angela.

“So here we are; we are now saffron farmers.”

Farming Saffron also has the practical advantages of requiring minimal investment in equipment, it can be stored for long periods without deteriorating and is easy to transport.

All that it requires is a lot of hands-on labour.

“It’s very labour-intensive, which is why saffron is so expensive because it’s all done by hand,” said Angela.

By weight, saffron is more expensive than gold, but it’s not surprising when you see just what

goes into collecting even a single gram.

Saffron bulbs, known as corms, are planted in summer and flower for about a month in autumn. The new flowers are picked every morning and the three stigma are carefully extracted from the centre of the flower and then dried, ready for use in the kitchen.

It takes between 160 and 190 flowers to produce one gram of saffron, which retails for about $60.

Last year, Angela and Brendon harvested just 12 grams from a test plot of 2,500 corms — double what they expected from their first crop. This year, they will produce around 60 grams, but next season — as the corms multiple underground — they expect around half a kilogram.

“And by year five, I’d guess we should be making at least a kilo a season — If we can sell it.”

Australia is only a small grower on the world stage, but what they lack in quantity, Angela believes they make up for in quality.

“Last year I sent our saffron around to chefs and a couple of influencers and the general feedback was that they had to use about half of ours compared to what they’re used to using, which is pretty important when you’re paying 60 bucks a gram,” she said.

Angela just recently launched their website for Argyle Saffron and plans to direct sell to restaurants, particularly local ones who like to showcase produce from the region.

“But I love it. There is no way you can be a Saffron farmer unless you genuinely enjoy it; it’s just too hard and there’s too much to do and know. I love every aspect of it. Not that long ago, Brendon asked if I could be doing anything right now, what would I be doing? And I said, just what I’m doing now. So, we’re in it for the long haul."

Last week a very brave eight-year-old, Ashlyn Purss chopped her locks in front of her school community at Borenore Public.

T

his wasn’t just any general haircut, Ashlyn had been growing her hair “her whole life� so she knew if she was going to cut it, it would be for a great cause. Ashlyn and her Mother, Leanne decided on donating to Variety- the Children’s Charity, ‘Hair with Heart’, where her hair will be used to make wigs for those who have lost theirs due to a medical condition.

Borenore Public school supported Ashlyn’s event by hosting a crazy hair day and a gold coin donation. Students who donated

received a ticket into the raffle of cutting off one of Ashlyn’s plaits, that lucky winner was student, Layla, along with Ashlyn herself, Mrs Guisard and her mum, Leanne.

Ashlyn explained, “I was a little bit scared but happy because I know that it’s going to a good cause. It makes me feel special that everyone at school got involved and did crazy hair, if I wasn’t getting my hair cut it would have been just a boring old Friday.�

Leanne added, “We initially set the target (two weeks ago) at $150 and cleared that

within a couple of hours of posting it online, so we bumped it to $350 as an achievable total and we have actually raised $957. We have had some very generous people; Ashlyn is very lucky.�

As the final plait was cut, echos of encouragement and clapping filled the undercover area, “That actually looks really cool, you look great Ashlyn!� followed by questions including “How do you feel? Will you do it again? Is your neck cold?�

Principal, Mrs Hopkins explained, “I think

having Ashlyn make the generous donation of her hair, it was a very personal experience for all of the students, they were all very excited. It was also nice for the children to acknowledge people who need to access that service and facility.�

Don’t worry, Ashlyn had a ‘real’ haircut booked for after school so it could get tidied up. The school community then had one final celebration- eating red jelly cups.

Congratulations on your selfless act Ashlyn, you’re a champion!

What’s In a Name?

Having trouble finding a name for your baby? Spare a thought for H & M – it must have been a nightmare.

As Jack Thompson used to say in the ad for ‘Claytons’ in the 70s … “now we can all get some sleep.” Not only are we done and dusted with Federal elections for a while (he writes with fingers crossed), but the royal baby is finally with us, named, posted on Instagram and ready for duty. Archie.

In our minds, the first of our three kids was always going to be a boy. We didn’t find out, but we were convinced. We really only had a boy name, so we were in strife if he didn’t pop out with, well, you know.

Then the same for our second. We were blissfully unaware of her sex, but she was named as a girl from pretty early on. Again, not sure what we’d have done if she were a boy! Then with number three we’d drawn an absolute blank. We would lie awake at night blurting out names that appealed, only to get a raspberry or even worse from the other partner as we voiced disapproval at each suggestion. Then after weeks of this unsuccessful to-ing and fro-ing, and again not knowing if it were to be blue or pink, one of us blurted out ‘Oscar’ … silence instead of negativity from the other partner signalled some sort of approval, and the rest is history.

I wonder if that’s how it goes with the Royals? Methinks not. The pressure to pick traditional names from those higher above has obviously been huge for hundreds of years, with just about everyone except Fergie, what a surprise, following regal protocol and using majestic-kind-of names. I’d love to think the new generation of Royalty laid awake in bed for months coming up with the name Archie. There’s sure to be some nobles who are quite offended by the choice, but around our dinner table we assumed that Harry and Meghan were going to do something different. Not necessarily different just to be oppositional, but from the day they started dating, the kingly world was never going to be the same.

Even though he ended up being a week overdue, I was kind-of hoping he’d hang on for another week, as the distraction of an impending royal birth was doing it’s best to overshadow the politics and stupid TV ads on many an occasion over the past few months. After waking up to the news that baby Archie had entered the world, my brain was singing the theme to the 70s TV cartoon series for all of the rest of the day. Remember … “Archie’s here, Betty’s here, Veronica too … Hey Jughead, where are you?” Not sure if that happens in your head, but I was glad for the space between my ears being occupied by something other than the tunes Clive Palmer ruined and stole to play in his ads.

Cool name, Archie. As you know, I’m not much of a Monarchist, but these guys are OK. I hope we see the little guy wearing a cartoon Archie t-shirt soon, that’d be very clever.

WHEN IT COMES TO THE MEAT THAT ENDS UP ON YOUR DINNER TABLE, MOST PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA JUST WHERE OR HOW FAR AWAY IT COMES FROM.

E

ven a lot of butchers sourcing from large commercial abattoirs have little idea about the origins of their meat, says Stephen Tamplin, who has taken it upon himself to make a better option available to people in the Central West.

Stephen, who runs his own small herd of Dorper Sheep, had become unhappy with how his animals were being processed and decided he could do better.

So, he founded Tablelands Premier Meats, which is now the only all-species licenced abattoir in the state and processes everything from quail to emus and rabbits to goats, sheep and cattle.

From just a couple of staff, Tablelands now employs a team of 11 people including slaughterman, packers, butchers, shop assistants and cold transport drivers.

At Tableland Premier Meats the focus is on providing a local service and guaranteed traceability from paddock to plate, said Stephen, who also operates a retail butcher shop in the Summer Centre, selling products almost exclusively sourced from his own farm.

“The thing about our abattoir is that our meat is locally grown, locally processed and locally available,” he said.

“We are a very locally focussed business. We have our own farms and grow our own stock for our own butchery. We also supply a lot of local restaurants, motels and cafes with product that has a traceability back to our place. We know where our meat is coming from, we know that it is local meat and that our road miles are very short.”

Stephen’s Canowindra farm now supplies his butchery with lamb, beef, goat, pork, turkey, duck and chicken, while he sources rabbit, quail, emu and other poultry from suppliers who share his

concerns when it comes to animal welfare.

“Animal welfare is a very important thing to us and to a lot of the owners of animals we process and also to a lot of our customers,” said Stephen.

“At our abattoir, the animals come in, they are rested, sheltered in their own undercover area and re-hydrated. We make sure the animals are not being stressed.”

Stephen’s own history working in the health sector has also made him conscious of providing meat products that are free of chemicals “We don’t use any chemicals in our processing, so we have no chlorination, no fluoridation, no nothing in our water… we use an ultraviolet watersterilizing high-pressure filtration which we then have independently micro biologically tested to make sure that it is fit for human use. So, we have zero carcass residues of any form of chemicals, which is good for those who’ve got allergy issues,” he said.

While Stephen is proud to supply his own local stock through his retail butchery, he is also keen to support other local farm businesses and provide customers with quality meat from a known source.

“We are helping local farms to build their own local meat retail businesses. They bring their meat to us and we do the full processing packing and we have a refrigerated van service to supply to their distribution points in Sydney or locally — wherever they want it to go,” said Stephen.

“We can provide them the chemical-free service that they want and the transport to a wholesaler or restaurant in Sydney — it’s a one-stop shop. They can deliver the animals to us and we look after the rest of the process.

“And we’re not linked to any major chain, so we have complete control from the paddock right through to the plate — well, to the counter anyway.

We’ll let people put meat on their plate in their own way!”

What do Christians believe?

There have been many books written and talks given to help our knowledge and understanding, but the Holy Bible is the sole completely reliable source of truth on what Christianity is about.

However, the Bible is a pretty big read, 66 books of different styles by 40 authors written over about 1,500 years and many hundreds of pages even in fine print, so how do we get to the heart

of its message? In God’s infinite wisdom, the basics of his message to us are really quite simple.

God created all things. We reject his right to rule and want to be boss ourselves. That rightly makes God angry with us, but God loves us, knew we were like that and didn’t leave us alone to face his wrath. Rather from the beginning he had a plan in place to restore us into a right relationship with Him. This was through his son, Jesus, who was born to die a purposeful death, to save all people who believe in him from God’s judgement. This is called the Gospel, or in modern English “the good news”.

BY MELISE COLEMAN Colourful dancing and the best food from Indian tradition are set to be the highlight of the latest event to be organised by the Desi Aussies of Orange organisation (DAO).

DAO have organized ‘Bollywood Biryani Night 2019’ at Kenna Hall in Hill Street on Saturday May 25, from 6-10pm.

Vice president of Desi Aussies, Jagjeet Chawla, said the group is a non-profit organisation based in Orange, aimed at promoting the culture of people from the Indian sub-continent.

“What we want to do is bring together everyone by organizing cultural events that highlights the practices of inclusion and diversity irrespective of religion and beliefs of the people.”

“We were delighted by the success of last year’s event in Orange when hundreds of people enjoyed the dance, music, entertainment based on Bollywood themes along with fantastic meals,” Jagjeet Chawla said.

“This time mouth-watering delicious Biryani, a very popular dish of Indian subcontinent, is the key dish on the menu. I am confident it will be another great success.”

Tickets are $10 per person, children under five years are free. Tickets must be purchased before the event. DAO are encouraging participants to get into the spirit, and dress in the Bollywood style.

xcitement is growing in the village of Newbridge as preparations ramp up for their annual winter solstice celebrations.

The winter solstice celebration is styled somewhat after the Celtic mid-winter celebrations and the streets of Newbridge will be filled with medieval fun and games, English-style street markets, Viking combat demonstrations, belly dancers and the Great Dane magician.

The festival culminates with a bonfire and the burning of the wicker man.

“This year we have exciting new initiatives to add to the already impressive program,” said 38

“There will be a grand castle entrance, a wicker man competition for locals, stocks for fun and photos as well as the opportunity to purchase a wicker man for the bonfire.

The celebrations begin at noon on Winter Solstice, 22 June, with the burning of the wicker man taking place at 5pm.

OCLife Words of Wisdom with Melise Coleman This week I caught up with the beautiful Beveley Cotterell.

Where and when were you born? 1933, in Sydney in the Crown Street Maternity Hospital What big world events were the most memorable while you were growing up? We had a couple of submarines firing over Sydney, my Mother and Father got up and raced around. They didn’t come near our house.

Well money was a lot cheaper in those days *laughs*

Describe yourself in three words. Old.. Grey.. *laughs* Creative, Strong-Willed and I had pride in myself.

What is your favourite childhood memory?

I went in the Miss Australia contest; I was actually underage I was only 16 years old I think. We did a few RSL fashion parades and a few things like that. Once you have a fur coat around you, you can go in there and do anything. *laughs* What life advice would you pass along to your grandchildren? I’ve got two grandkids, both girls, one was only born a couple of weeks ago.

I’d say.. take notice in school, don’t fool around like Grandma did.. and marry a nice bloke.

What could you tell me that I would be surprised to learn about you? I never learnt to drive, I should’ve.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I don’t know, I don’t think anything in particular.

Everyone in my family that was female worked as a Nurse, I tried it and didn’t go much further.

What was your first job? Working in a factory in Sydney, it supplied stuff to a few big shops around the place. We used to paint lamp shades. It actually burnt down, then I moved onto Dental Nursing.

What was your favourite job? Probably the factory job, because I like colour and being creative, we had a design we had to use and sometimes they would let us do our own.

What are you most proud of? My family, I have a beautiful son and a daughter and two grandkids.

What did you get up to when you were young? Well, there was no television.. I played some basketball and wasn’t very good, I was going to be a bike rider.. I grabbed my friends’ bike and went peddling through Newtown at about 5:30 in the afternoon going to the wooden track and got stuck in the tram line (the front wheel) it took a bit of skin off and slowed up a few trams. I gave up that career after that. *laughs* Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? My Husband Fred, He was never cranky, he was just a great mate. We were happily married for 22 years and I really miss him.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun now? Arts and crafts, I did some painting for the Show. We went to the movies the other day and I laughed till I cried, I thought it was beautiful the way they had those oldies in there.

This group of young people is Orange Rural School boys’ choir in 1955. They had just won a prize at the Bathurst Eisteddfod in October that year. The Eisteddfod tradition goes back a long way in Orange, with intermittent contests held since 1928.

The Eisteddfod was reestablished in the city in 1980 and has been well supported ever since, with vocal, instrumental, dancing, speech and drama sections.

It would be great to put some names to these faces.

Approximately 70 family and friends of Tina de Haan gathered at the New Life Church on Saturday May 11th to help her with a double celebration.

These included those that had travelled from Brisbane, Sydney and Port Macquarie for the occasion. Tina was celebrating her 85th birthday and the 50th anniversary of her and her family immigration to Australia. Tina and her husband and children arrived in Sydney on the Acadia from the Netherlands on May 20th, 1969. They spent 2 weeks in an immigration settlement before moving to Orange. She loves Australia and Orange so although the family have on occasion moved away, they kept on returning to Orange. Tina’s family has grown to 4 Children, 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Golden Memories Museum volunteers Marnie Mason and Fayah McKenzie were recently hardat-work clearing-up piles of wind-blown leaves from the elegant London plane trees that grace Park Street and welcome visitors to the historic village.

The district though has again this year been subject to the continuing drought with only 240 mm (less than 10 inches) of rain falling for the first five months of the year which has affected the autumnal colours of the local flora.

“It’s been very dry and they haven’t been changing colours, just dropping,” Fayah observed.

The working bee, she explained, was timed to gather as many of the leaves as possible, which otherwise become slippery and dangerous to 46

“If we do these now, we only have to do them once more for the winter,” she added.

While January to May forms the drier season in the area, winter this year is unlikely to provide the much-needed relief for local pasture growth and gardens in the Blayney district.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s winter 2019 outlook forecasts large parts of south-east Australia to be drier than average with warmerthan-average winter days for June to August.

This is likely to lead to the “dry winter” effect for Millthorpe, perched nearly 1000 metres above sea-level, with dry, cool days followed by clear, cold nights and evening temperatures regularly dropping below zero.
