Winter in Orange always brings with it an extra measure of doom and gloom for me, something to do with the colder and longer Winter we experience I expect. I know I always struggle a little bit more during this time of the year but over the last week or two I’ve had extra reason to feel a little bit worse than normal, our home air conditioning system died and when this happens, you get to appreciate what a cold house really feels like.

Not surprisingly my thoughts turned to those people who live with constant cold for one reason or another and I now have a greater appreciation of what they’re up against. I also heard last week that the local Red Cross is short of winter clothing so if anyone can help out there, please don’t be backward in coming forward with any surplus to needs clothing, blankets etc., even money if you’re inclined to give something in that way.

Still on hardship, we often hear of people facing a financial crisis, sometimes it involves a family member with a serious health issue, other times it could be something else. We get asked quite often to help in getting publicity out to the community about such issues and it’s not always possible or practical for us to give these things the publicity they need. That said, we do try to help when we can so for that reason, we’re introducing a new segment into OC Life from this week. It’s called Community Help File. It won’t change what we’re presently doing but it will indicate the type of story that features in this segment. You’ll find the first story under the new heading in this issue on Page 6. Please read it and help if you can.

CWA TRIBUTE AND CELEBRATION THIS SUNDAY

n Sunday 14 July members of the CWA Orange branch will host a community afternoon tea from 2pm to 4pm to celebrate the retirement of Dr Tony Luscombe after 50 years serving the community as a General Practitioner. Dr Luscombe is well known in Orange and an open invitation is extended to former patients and members of the community who know him to celebrate his retirement with his family and friends.

Dr Luscombe, Tony, has worked at Apple City Family Medicine for the past 11 years. Before that he was a GP in private practice in Liverpool, Sydney and he also served for 20 years as a Medical Officer in the Australian Regular Army. In the army Tony dealt with trauma, emergency and tropical medicine. In General Practice his focus has been on gastroenterology, cardiovascular and respiratory disease, diabetes and paediatrics. In retirement, according to his

daughter, Georgina, who is a member of the CWA in Orange, Tony is now looking forward to spending time in his garden and having more time to make jam and bread.

Members of the CWA Orange branch leapt at the opportunity to host this event both to honour Tony’s service and to showcase the recently completed renovations to the CWA hall kitchen and adjacent ‘mother’s room’. The new kitchen includes more bench space, deep sinks, a new cooker with a large oven and two new microwaves to enhance catering possibilities for hall hirers. The work, which was completed by local tradespeople, was financed with a Stronger Country Communities grant and with donations of material and in-kind help. In particular, members would like to thank Haimish Karrasch from Laminex for the donation of materials for cupboards, bench tops and splash backs which allowed the budget to be stretched further with quality products and finish.

Much needed renovations to the floor in the mother’s room were also completed using a Community Building Partnership grant. This room now sports new footings, flooring and carpet tiles. An intrusive internal brick wall has also been removed giving more usable space and better access.

Members of the CWA Orange branch would like to thank all contractors and tradesmen who accomplished this work in a tight three-week schedule. They also thank the NSW Government for its grant programs that financed the work and local MP Philip Donato and Orange City Council for supporting the grant applications. That’s plenty to celebrate as Dr Luscombe retires, join them!

SOMETIMES WE JUST NEED A BAND AID

JUSTIN I was born in Orange, but I grew up out west in Cobar — Dad was a shearer’s cook and farm hand. A lot of the places out there you couldn’t get TV, so our only entertainment was Mum’s records and I just loved listening to them. I used to sit on the lounge room floor with the record player in a little red suitcase picking out the records and then play them — I loved it.

After high school I moved back to

Orange to work at Email and met Eddie Freedman. Eddie was a well-known guitarist and we played together in various bands for about 18 years.

Since Ed and I moved on, I started writing my own songs and I love it — having an idea and seeing it grow into a song. I released an album in 2017 with four originals and I’m writing a new original album at the moment — the first single will be available from 12 July.

Performing is not really about me. I like to bring joy to people; that’s my thing.

Sure, I get a kick out of it, but it is really about providing entertainment and seeing people be happy.

If nothing ever comes of the songs I write, it doesn’t really matter to me, because I’ll know that I gave it a go and enjoyed doing it… but if they do go somewhere, well and good! That’s a bonus!

Often when there’s a problem, the preferred fix will be what is commonly referred to as a band aid solution. In some cases this is helpful, in other cases it just prolongs the inevitable, a greater problem.

That said, Orange currently has a huge problem, one that I know for absolute certain needs a band aid solution right now, but my fear is that the powers that be, may not be seeing the urgency of this problem.

I’m part of the Put Orange First group who are currently working to build relationships with other business groups in Orange to see if we can’t all get together to deal with the growing issues that many businesses are facing and start progressing Orange faster than is currently happening. The business groups I’m referring to include the Orange Business Chamber, Orange 360, Business HQ and Orange City Council to name a few.

Among Put Orange First’s main agenda items is to promote, support and encourage local retailers, while at the same time encouraging more locals to support our local businesses, particularly our retailers more. It’s absolutely crucial that our small business retailers remain open and viable if we are to continue to expect them to provide jobs for us, our families and our kids into the future. If we don’t take steps right now to address the current retail downturn in Orange, we will pay for it later.

Therein lies my problem.

The drought is now. The recession, real or imagined, is now. Retailers are facing competition from businesses in other places and online now. Locals need to be convinced why and encouraged to start buying from local retailers now.

Orange needs to start turning

things around now, in fact RIGHT NOW! In the process of building the relationships I mentioned, I’m delighted to say that Put Orange First has discovered that there are some very good initiatives happening behind the scenes and if successful, these will bring very positive financial benefits to our City and the on flow will also benefit many local businesses.

Given what I’m hearing, my problem is that the benefits of these latest initiatives may not be felt until possibly 1 - 2 or more years away and in my judgement will do little or nothing to address the problems that so many retailers are feeling or experiencing now.

The bottom line for me is that Governments at all levels historically take an eternity to achieve anything, it’s almost impossible for them to address anything at the time it’s most needed. They also get bogged down in stuff that many astute businesspeople would deal with in 5 minutes. Dare I say it, how long has it taken so far to put a simple loo in Robertson Park?

Despite any data our Council wants to throw up about how Orange is fairing against other cities, despite any grand futuristic plans they may have, despite how strong our tourism and hospitality sector is doing, despite how many festivals and sporting events they have attracted to Orange, the fact remains that many of our retailers are bleeding but like with any problem, there are always solutions if you’re prepared to look for them.

For now, let’s applaud our Council for the foresight they are showing with our future but let’s also urge them to be just as wise with the present and find a band aid that we can apply to help our retailers right now!

The stories of hardship just keep coming…

Earlier this year Jarred and Amy Donlan’s two beautiful twin boys, Benjamin and Joshua were diagnosed with Autism, alongside this, they have a previous diagnosis of a severe Global Developmental Delay.

As Amy and Jarred recall, Ben and Josh ‘came out breathing perfectly and weighing a healthy weight’, “they were everything we had hoped for and were absolutely perfect.”

It was at 1-year old that Ben and Josh changed, they completely stopped intellectually developing. Amy explained, “I sought advice from many medical professionals and over the period of two years, we were always told the same thing, ‘There is nothing I can do to change it so

why try?’ We refused to give up on them.”

The boys are now 4.5 years old, however developmentally they are at a 2-year old’s level, they don’t have any comprehension, and still can’t say most single words. To this day the boys are attending speech therapy, occupational therapy and follow the Nemechek protocol from a USA based doctor.

When given the recent news, Amy took to the internet to look for answers, in her determination she came across an American based Stem Cell Treatment company practicing out of Mexico that have wonderful results relating to both Autism and Global Developmental Delay.

The protocol from the treatment uses donated cord blood and is non-invasive, the boys will just be hooked up to an IV. The stem cell therapy works to fix what has gone wrong with their bodies when they have developed, it is also expected to heal the brain. Medical professionals ensure the full benefits of the treatment wouldn’t eventuate for 12 months.

As you can imagine, this treatment is very expensive at $15,000 USD per twin, and with the current exchange rate it is just shy of $43,000 AUD. With their family of five, Amy working as a Beauty Therapist and Jarred working on the family farm, Amy explained, “No matter how much extra I work, we just can’t come up with that kind of money, its way out of our financial limits.”

“It’s so cruel when there is something that can help your child and you can’t afford it, this can change their whole lives.”

Jarred added, “I guess the question I always ask is, is there anything I can do, and If there is then you do it. If there’s not, then we accept it.. but there are options for us.”

“Everything we do in life, everything we have is all for our kids at the end of the day, so, we are going to put in everything we can. We are pushing to get it done so we can try and bridge the gap between them and children starting school.”

“My motivation is to try and give my boys the most normal life that we can give them, if there’s anything we can do, we will do it.”

Amy continued, “We appreciate how hard you work for your money, It doesn’t matter how big or small, anything to help us get this treatment for Ben and Josh, is so appreciated and I cannot thank you enough.”

“The truffle growing capital of the world!”

– IT HAS A NICE RING TO IT

Growing truffles is a tricky yet rewarding business, just ask Borry Gartrell and his wife Gaye Stewart-Nairn of Borrodell, home to the Australian mainland’s oldest truffle trees.

Truffles, prized for their complex aroma and flavour, are a fungi that grows in a symbiotic relationship on the roots of oak or hazelnut trees. Foraged naturally in Europe, farming truffles has become a growing agricultural enterprise around the world in order to meet the voracious culinary demand.

The first ‘truffery’ here in Australia (although a lot of farmers prefer the French ‘truffiére’) dates back to the early 1990s in Tasmania. It was while visiting a Tasmanian grower that Borry and Gaye became captivated by the elusive black truffle.

“I remember our very first truffle hunt, them running around with the dog, that whole thing and it was quite exciting — We ordered 100 truffle trees that day,” said Gaye.

To farm truffles, young trees are inoculated with the truffle fungi spores before being planted. It can then take four to ten years before a farmer may harvest their first truffle.

Borrodell now has around 800 oak trees and produces a reasonable amount of truffles each winter, the majority of which are used in their restaurant ‘Sister Rock’.

“It has been a real niche thing, but it has worked really well for us,” said Gaye. “And what has been really nice is having a restaurant to work with the truffles. Right through winter people who come out here are able to order our truffles on their menu. It is the ultimate paddock to plate experience.”

Being a relatively new farming enterprise there is still a lot of mystery around growing truffles, but that seems to be part of the allure for Borry.

“What I love about it is: when you are growing wine or apples, everyone has done it before, but with truffles noone really knows, so your opinion is as good as the next,” said Borry, although there are basic measures required to make truffle farming a success.

“They like alkaline soils, but the soils of this district are naturally a bit acidic so that takes enormous doses of lime.”

Older trees must also be pruned to let sunlight through,

and truffles do best with a drenching in summer.

“When we water them, we direct the pump into a relatively small area… replicating a thunder storm that’s what I’m trying to do,” said Borry, who is still happy to take any better advice on the matter.

“None of this is in a textbook, so if someone else comes along and says that’s a lot of crap. Well, I’d say they might be right.”

During the brief winter harvest period, Borry and Gaye employ a truffle dog and handler to sniff out the pungent fungus buried beneath the oaks.

When first starting out they bought a retired customs dog for the purpose, but that proved less successful.

“We got this gorgeous dog called Spike,” said Gaye, “We thought it would be really easy to move him away from drugs and explosives onto truffles, but he used to sit there at the cellar door with his little head nodding and pointing

to those with suspicious pockets!”

Truffles can fetch as much as $3,000 a kilogram, although the price varies greatly on their shape, quality and intensity. In 2005 the total Australian truffle harvest was estimated at just 50 kilograms. In 2017, the harvest was near 13,000 kilograms and it’s predicted to exceed 20,000 kilograms in 2020.

While content with his own little oak forest, Borry believes there could be a good future for truffles in the district.

“The demand for truffle is just so great that they are never going to be over produced and I think it would be a great industry — particularly for Spring Hill, Spring Terrace, Millthorpe all that land out there, the colder it is the more they like it,” he said.

“It would be a beautiful oak forest —the truffle growing capital of the world!”

In Orange, our Red Cross shop has stood proudly for over 12 years and continues to rely on the generosity of the community to donate quality pre-loved items.

Calls for donations are now being made as they are in desperate need of winter warmers. Donations can be anything from good quality Men’s, Women’s, and Children’s footwear, to bric-a-brac, Manchester and books (please no electrical or furniture goods).

Often referred to as ‘a cave of hidden treasures’, the Red Cross now have a new incentive to donate and shop. Retail Manager, Judy Webber explained, “A loyalty card is given when a donation

Judy has worked in the Orange store for 4.5 years, “I come from a town that had 8,000 people, I worked in the Red Cross Shop there for 23 years, I had about 13 volunteers there and here I’ve got 30, some have been here since the year 2007.

I didn’t know anybody when I moved here, and I’ve made friends with the girls here and I just enjoy it, it’s still a challenge, but it’s an enjoyable challenge.”

“Each time we get a box or bag of donations it’s like opening up Christmas presents. We all say yippee, work!”

ATTENTION PLEASE?

BY MELISE COLEMAN or most, standing up on stage, all eyes on you is somewhat terrifying, for year 8 Kinross student, Toby Gough, it’s something he thrives off and continues to love.

Coming in second place at the Public Speaking Competition held in Narromine recently for the Year 7-8 category, Toby was quite happy with his overall performance. “I was pretty happy; my goal was do the Central West area of the CWA and Kinross proud. My speech topic was “appreciate the little things.”

“I talked about how so many things are used by us on a day to day basis that, goes without saying, we are truly grateful for them including; 5 cent pieces, our family and having a meal on your table every night.”

This isn’t Toby’s first time in the CWA competition, claiming he didn’t

do ‘too well’ the first time he had performed. “I was a bit of a rookie to the CWA Public Speaking atmosphere at the time, but I took the feedback on board and I put it into action this year.”

“You always feel pressure, once you’ve gotten used to speaking in front of people all the time, the pressure does start to lower a bit, that doesn’t mean that you should try less, you still need to try as hard as you always do.”

Toby is no stranger to the stage, having recently completed and won a section at Gulgong, he is also set to perform at the Gosford, Penrith, Orange and Bathurst Eisteddfods.

“I have been doing Speech and Drama for nine years, that has helped a lot, it’s given me the ability to speak up and talk to people.”

“I love the fact that when you’re on stage the only thing you’re thinking about is your topic, you’re

not thinking ‘have I done my speech correctly? What’s for dinner tonight?’ and it’s the one time, as you’re speaking, no one else is talking they are all listening to you, taking in your point of view, and it’s your time to shine.”

Lucknow’s finest taking-on the world

t’s the classic Australian retailer selling a range of locally-designed clothing with its biggest seller a national icon; the ugg boot! It’s also become one of the regions most outstanding small businesses and a favourite stopping point for visitors and locals alike.

Lucknow Skin Shop and Boot Barn has become an institution over the past quarter of a century at the old gold-mining village east of Orange, but times, they say, are a’ changing.

Three years ago, mother and son owners Dianne and Nathan Gee took the plunge into online retail with the same attention to first-rate customer service for which the Lucknow (pronounced “Luck-know” after the famed Indian city of the same name) store has become recognised.

“I think you’ve just got to go with what’s happening; you can’t stand still,” Dianne explained.

The classically-simple easy-to-navigate website at: www.lucknowskinshop.com. au features many of the best-selling boots, fashion and outdoor clothes, belts, and accessories which attract customers from around Australia.

“We update it ourselves, constantly…

We were always confident that it would go well,” Dianne said. “Our customer base is very wide; we’re fairly well-known Australia-wide,” she explained.

Since establishing their website, about 20 percent of all sales are now online with the figure growing. “It’s the distance that is amazing, we get orders from Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia. And of course, lots from country NSW. Yesterday we sold stock to someone from Nyngan,” Dianne added.

But while the online sales are the cream; Dianne believes it is the unique Australia ambience of the Lucknow store that anchors the success of the business.

“I think a vast majority of our customers are aware of the shop, they have a relationship to the shop. They want that physical connection to us as people.”

Dianne uses a literary analogy to explain the relationship: “I’m a big reader, I love books. I do read a tablet when I’m traveling, but I love a book to touch and feel,” she explained.

The key to success, Dianne believes, is old-style customer service which begins with the eclectic Lucknow store that she describes as: “a bit of outdoor; a bit of fashion.”

“I think we do very well on customer service; even to the point that we stocktake almost every week.”

“You need to do that well; a lot of the customers online are people who have been our physical customers here.”

“But people will look through catalogues.

When we order on Monday, we order for that customer first.”

The iconic retailer is also on Facebook and are currently supporting a Baxters boot line to raise funds for a charity based around the tragic suicide of a Queensland schoolgirl. “We put it on Facebook and we had orders the next day,” Dianne explained.

As well as the Aussie favourite ugg-boot, big-sellers online are Thomas Cook, Ariat, Ringers Western and Wrangler.

Dianne has some prudent advice for other local retailers looking to dip their toe in the online sales world.

Taking a leaf from online giants like Amazon and Alibaba she says; put your best boot forward and get your product

out in a timely fashion. “Make sure you’ve got good photos of the products you’re trying to sell,” she explains.

“Also, it’s incredibly important if we’ve got stock, it goes out the same day for sure. If we don’t have it, the moment it comes in, five days maximum, it goes out the same day.”

Her online sales philosophy matches her positive world-view. “You can only try; have a go. You’ll soon learn if it’s working or not,” Dianne concluded.

‘ACTIVE LIVING LONGER’ IN ORANGE

esidents of Orange who are aged 50 years and more, can now benefit from the Charles Sturt University (CSU) Active Living Longer (ALLong) program which has extended to CSU in Orange, thanks to a grant from Staying Active.

The ALLong program aims to help our aged enjoy a long-term active lifestyle and extended years of independence, it has been running successfully for a year at Bathurst CSU. The program is run in conjunction with CSU, which provides research support and the use of their well-equipped gyms. Dr Eevon Stott, adjunct research fellow in the CSU School of Exercise Science, Sport and Health in Bathurst explained, “The gym is a safe and supportive environment, and through listening to our participants, we have established a routine that suits the needs of over-50s. Participants in the group gym program can also opt to participate in research comprising physical, physiological, balance, and wellbeing measures. The research then acts as a checkpoint for the participants to track their progress over time.”

Dr Scott continued, “As part of the research, we ask them, what can we do to get you out of the program? We actually want to graduate them, so we work through a progression chart (12-25

sessions), once they have finished their progression pack, we ask them, ‘do you feel confident enough to leave and continue this on your own? And if you do, what can we do to help you?”

The program also functions as a placement opportunity for students from the School of Exercise Science, Sports and Health. Dr Stott credits the success of the program, to the professionalism of the staff and students of the School.

“We have put eight students through their placement so far, the student model allows for intergenerational interaction with the participants.

he graduates, he will be an Accredited Exercise Scientist.”

Judy James has been involved with the program for three weeks now and couldn’t speak any higher of it. “I am involved in tenpin bowling competition each week and play some golf. This is what I need because my balance isn’t the best and I needed to work on getting some strength in my arms, legs and core, this program really just suited my needs,” said Judy.

Due to the size of the gym at CSU in Orange, participant places in the ALLong program are limited. Participants pay a small fee to attend.

The kidneys are very important and are essential for living.

They are the unsung hero of the body. Most people have two kidneys and they are about the size of a fist and sit on either side of the backbone. Each kidney is made up of about 1 million tiny filter ‘units’– called nephrons. That’s why the fancy name for kidney doctor is a Nephrologist. The kidneys serve four very important functions: 1. They filter – They ‘clean’ the blood (up to 200L a day) and eliminate the waste and excess fluid in the form of urine.

This keeps the balance of chemicals and water in the body stable, similar to how a pool filter helps prevent a pool from going green and overflowing.

2. They control blood pressure – they release a hormone called renin that is very important in blood pressure control.

3. They maintain healthy bones – they release and an enzyme that helps with calcium and phosphate balance in the body, which is crucial for bone health.

4. They help make red blood cells – they release a hormone called EPO, which tells the bones to make more red blood cells.

What can damage the kidney?

It’s important that the kidney stays healthy and doesn’t get scarred. Once it is scarred, it doesn’t filter as well and can lead to chronic kidney disease. When there is a lot of scarring and the kidney doesn’t filter much at all, dialysis is needed. This is where a machine does the job the kidneys are meant to do.

Things that increase your risk of kidney damage are: 1. Diabetes – sugary blood damages the blood vessels and filters of the kidney and is the number one cause of kidney disease in Australia

He also has a strong interest in medical education, due to complete a research masters in clinical education this year. He is Senior Lecturer in Medicine at the University of Sydney, School or Rural health and is very excited about the four year medical program that will start in Dubbo in 2021. He strongly believes that the aim of education is to make each generation more skilled and knowledgeable than the last.

He lives with his wife Melinda and dog Jovi in Dubbo and they have (finally) bought a house.

PROTECTING OUR FARMERS FROM VEGAN ACTIVISTS

The Australian Government has delivered on its election commitment to protect the privacy of Australian farmers and primary producers by introducing legislation to protect them from the unlawful actions of animal activists.

The Criminal Code Amendment (Agricultural Protection) Bill 2019 introduces new offences for the incitement of trespass, property damage, or theft on agricultural land. Offenders will face up to five years’ imprisonment.

Incidents of trespass by deranged and deluded activists, such as those we saw earlier this year, have impacted on Australian farmers

and their businesses, prompting this stronger action to deter those who incite this behaviour.

The Bill sends a clear message to animal activists that if you use the personal information of our family farmers to incite trespass then you will be risking jail. The government has also called on the state and territory governments to increase penalties to deter animal rights activists from trespass.

Our farmers have enough on their plate dealing with the drought and shouldn’t need to lie awake at night worrying about these crazed activists.

TAX CUTS PASS THE PARLIAMENT Around 62,000 low and middle income earners in the Calare electorate will start to receive immediate tax relief from this week.

Those earning up to $126,000 will receive up to $1,080, and dual income couples will receive up to $2,160, with the increased tax relief to apply from the 201819 income year.

The Bill has also locked in the benefits of low and

middle income tax relief by increasing the top threshold of the 19 cents in the dollar tax bracket from $41,000 to $45,000 and by increasing the low income tax offset from $645 to $700 in 2022-23.

In combination with the legislated removal of the 37 per cent tax bracket in 2024-25, the Government is delivering structural reform to the tax system by reducing the 32.5 cents in the dollar tax

rate to 30 cents in the dollar.

Together, these tax relief measures will create a flatter and better tax system that will improve incentives for hard-working Australians and ensure that 94 per cent of Australians will face a marginal tax rate no higher than 30 cents in the dollar in 2024-25. Once fully implemented, around 13.3 million taxpayers will pay lower taxes.

The Air Attack Warning Normally when Big Brother is watching I’m concerned, but maybe not in this case.

A lightning trip to Queensland and back last week saw a proud set of parents doing the whoop-whoop from the audience as ‘child’ number one moved forward with the next stage of life in the RAAF. They do things right in the ol’ armed forces I believe. All those there to share in the happiness of the graduates were treated like kings and queens, and we were given an exhibition of how they roll in the protection of our nation. Impressive. Secure feeling. Hearts warmed. No expense spared.

Cut back to the 80s, and also to the 40s. During the Second World War, particularly in England, the BBC radio was used as the method of communication for all alerts and warnings when bombings and danger were imminent.

They would ‘cease regular programming’ for an announcement about hurrying inside as the bombers were sighted coming toward England. A great use of the technology of the day, which probably saved countless lives. In the Eighties, mega-band Frankie Goes To Hollywood released an album called ‘Welcome To The Pleasuredome’, featuring a host of anti-Nuclear songs and slogans, including the worldwide #1 ‘Two Tribes.’ In that gem, the narrator uses a throwback line to WW2 saying “When you hear the air attack warning, you and your family must take cover at once!”.

Driving through one of the reeeeeeaaaaalllyy long tunnels under the scape of Brisbane during the morning peak hour, we noticed that all the illuminated signs above us had changed from arrows and directions to a message

saying ‘turn on your radio’. Weird, ours was already on and pumping. We were happily listening and chatting when all of a sudden things went silent mid-song, to be replaced by the voice of a lovely (but clinical) lady with an ‘announcement’.

Now this may have happened to many of you before, but it was a first for us, as the lady warned that we should slow down in the tunnel as there was congestion ahead just before one the exits. She thanked us for our cooperation and patience, and then the song came back on.

Whilst the announcement was very pleasant, informative and most of all accurate – we watched on as the traffic in the left lane came to a halt just ahead and we slowly and thankfully avoided it via the right lane exit. All I really heard deep inside my mind was a blast from the Frankie song “… when you hear the air attack warning…” I laughed a nervous laugh, related what was going on in my head to my wife, and asked her to send a text message to my phone so I’d remember to write this column.

The warning for the traffic holdup was awesome, and as my cynical mind wandered I started to think about where this type of technology could end up, with the possibility of “this announcement brought to you by …” some sort of alcohol or gambling venture not too far away. Would the PM be able to interrupt my highway singing to ‘Nutbush’ with an alert about the budget or a rise in interest rates? At least Kevvie Walters didn’t cut in on Tina with some propaganda about why the Maroons did so badly in Origin 2 … but the possibility exists for all this to happen, I guess.

Being glass is half full, well done Queensland roads, our two day whirlwind visit to your state was top shelf. Orange punching above its weight IN THE TOURISM STAKES

ocal tourism businesses have once again shone in the first stages of the 2019 Regional Tourism Awards with the Orange region scoring four finalist places across the 28 award categories.

And for the first time, locals had to compete against businesses across the combined Destination NSW Destination Networks of ‘Country & Outback’ and ‘Riverina Murray’, resulting a larger and more competitive pool of nominees.

Heifer Station Wines, Silver Compass Tours and the Orange Visitor Information Centre are all finalists in their respective categories, as is Canowindra’s Age of Fishes Museum.

“The tourism industry here is certainly punching above its weight,” said Orange City Council’s tourism manager, Glenn Mickle.

“Orange has become a bit of a destination that people are looking for and it is important that we deliver on what

we promise: We have good restaurants and the national parks, indoor and outdoor things to do, the accommodation sector is strong, our events are getting more popular and there are more of them too, so it is certainly on the up!”

Kelly Picarazzi and husband Paola founded their food and wine tour business, Silver Compass Tours, four years ago and she believes there is still so much untapped potential in the local tourism industry.

“I think Orange is perfectly positioned to give a quintessential ‘Regional Australia’ experience,” said Kelly.

“Sydney is still a massive market for us here. And Melbourne, we could tap into more. Canberra is a market just waiting to happen and then there’s taking the next step up…international tourists… People are flying into Sydney and only want to spend two or three days there now and they are actively looking to get out and experience Australia.”

FIT for WORK! It was an honour to attend the graduation ceremony at Orange PCYC for twelve young men and women who successfully completed PCYC’s ‘Fit For Work’ program.

It’s one of several programs offered as part of NSW Police Force’s RISEUP strategy, targeting young people aged 15 to 18 who are facing challenges at home, school or in the community.

The graduates received their ‘Fit for Work’ certification, White Cards in construction, First Aid and CPR certification. They’re all a step closer to entering the workforce and undertaking career specific training programs.

Great job, ELLA! Last month I made a Community Recognition Statement to acknowledge the efforts of ten year old Ms Ella Parry-Jones. Ella was motivated to raise funds for cancer research, to reduce the number of people who have to endure chemotherapy after she witnessed several people close to her experiencing the process in their personal battles with the disease.

This young lady launched a fundraising appeal, at the conclusion of which she traded her long locks of hair for donations to the Cancer Council. Ella’s campaign was well supported by the Orange community and at her recent ceremonial haircut she raised more than $7,200! An incredible result!

The big shave occurred among family, friends and a public gathering of those mustered to watch the local rugby league derby at Wade Park in Orange, with great applause. Ella’s hair has since been donated to Wigs4Kids, a charity that makes wigs for children who, because of cancer treatment, had no choice about losing their hair. Last week I congratulated Ella and presented her with a certificate upon which was printed the speech I made in Parliament of her benevolence. Ella, you’re an absolute champion.

MSM MILLING It was a pleasure to attend the official opening of MSM Milling’s thermal energy biomass project, renewable fuelled and low carbon emission. The boiler is currently a world record being 45 metres in length with a 5 megalitre capacity! Several years in the planning, congratulations to all those that made this a reality.

CWA HALL Last week I visited CWA Hall after their new renovations have been completed. CWA have utilised funding acquired under the Community Building Partnership with my assistance, in order to renovate the kitchen and mother’s room area of the hall in Robertson Park. It’s looking great and I’m sure these new areas will be put to good use, with all the important work the CWA does.

I work to what I’ve got, so everything is completely custom.”

“Kitchen renovations is where I focus on, but I do new homes too,” said Luke. “Not only that I can do a range of things — bathroom vanities, laundries, custom made furniture,

“By doing it all by hand I make sure everything is right, everything is to the millimetre and that’s how I like to work,” said Luke.

From Country-style kitchens to modern fitouts, Luke is up for any job big or small.

“A lot of my work previously was with Shaker-style doors and Hampton-style kitchens which is a bit of a trend, but I can definitely do all different types of kitchens,” he said.

“And I ‘ve got previous experience in carpentry, building houses from the ground up, not just joinery... so I’ve also got building qualifications behind me and my kitchen, bathroom, laundry renovation licences as well so I can do a range of things.

“If someone wanted a whole remodel, I could do all the demolition, all the framework and all the carpentry side of it as well — the whole job from start to finish.”

Another area Luke is passionate about is making custom furniture. He has designed and built a number of bespoke pieces for home and commercial premises.

“Making furniture is something I started out doing and have a passion for,” said Luke.

BY JONATHAN ROE Just one week after commencing work at the State Archive, Wendy was offered her dream job with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, but found herself turning it down.

“I chose the Archives — after a week,” said Wendy. “It is just amazing; the records that have been made and kept and how they are used … I’ve never regretted it. It’s given me great experiences.”

The State Archives is a collection of documents, maps, photographs are other records created by the NSW public sector dating back to beginnings of European settlement in Australia. In fact, the oldest item in the Archive predates the arrival of Arthur Phillip’s convict fleet — a small handbook of legal precents brought over by ship from England.

“It is classic public servant,” said Wendy. “‘I’m going across the seas to create a new colony, I’m going to take my book in which I’ve written down precedents of law!’ It is not exciting to look at, but it is a symbol of the way people thought, for better or for worse, they didn’t just say we’ll figure it out when we get there, the British are not like that…they probably didn’t have any understanding of how different it was going to be, but they were still thinking they were bringing the ‘English Rule of Law’.”

The amount of material contained in the Archives, located in Western Sydney, is hard to get your head around. If you stacked the boxes of stored material end to end, they would stretch over 84 kilometres! There are two centuries of court documents, government papers and correspondence — all that information

that still to this day gets quietly stored, indexed and maintained by the staff of the State Archive.

“There’s close to 2 million maps and plans, which go back to a fabulous map we call the Phillip Map — it is from 1792 and has a note in Arthur Phillip’s handwriting,” said Wendy.

“Then there are maps and plans of quite modern buildings, we have plans of prisons which have lived in the secure zone for all the time they have been with us… there is image material, pictures of fabulous street scenes of Sydney and regional NSW and others that are really boring, because they are these four nuts and bolts and a bit of girder.

“There are gaps, but I think of it as an amazing complete record of how the governments of the time, since 1788, have managed the resources, the people and the land of the State. And that’s one of the things I love about it, it has this whole, single purpose.”

While access to some of the material in the archives is restricted, there are vast amounts of information that can be accessed by anyone, which is where archivists like Wendy come in.

“I’m involved in providing access to the public and also designing engagement activities to try and get beyond just people who want to see archives, but to try and connect them to the world,” she said.

“So, an archivist in access services day will include answering the phone, helping members of the public working in the reading room, answering email inquiries and also doing research for things like exhibitions, newsletters, and increasingly

uncomfortable with the idea of finding out their ancestor’s criminal past it is a unique resource for historians and those looking at their family history.

“For some people it may be the only photo they are going to get of someone from their family,” said Wendy. “I’ve known people to just take the photo and ignore the rest, they don’t want to think about the criminal history.”

In an unbelievable coincidence, a viewer of the exhibition actually recognised the face of one of the old prisoner photos on display as they knew their grandson!

“It was just amazing! The exhibition was being put up in our foyer and one of our regulars was coming into the reading room. They walked past and thought he looks really familiar, looked at the name and it matched!” Wendy said.

Captured will be on display at the Orange City Library until July 28, but the Gaol Photographic Description Books have been digitised and can be found on the State Archives website, along with countless other records.

Digitising and indexing the archived material is an ongoing and seemingly endless task for the state archivists. Wendy said she would be surprised if even two per cent of what they have has been indexed.

“We have a band of volunteers who are just fantastic, who do both indexing and detailed listing and they’ve boosted our numbers amazingly,” said Wendy. “They’ve index listed all of the early probate packets, they’ve now listed their way through all of the divorce files from 1873 to 1930… Without them we’d have half the number of things indexed that we do.”

The State Archive Reading Room in Kingswood is open to the public five days a week, Tuesday to Saturday.

“The collection is completely beguiling,” says Wendy Gallagher of the NSW State Archives, which have been her passion and place of employment since leaving university more than three decades ago.

People accessing the archives come from all walks of life, said Wendy, who is constantly surprised by just how the information is put to use.

“Just ordinary people using them in a myriad of ways: everything from straight forward family history and local history, to a whole range of other history specialists — railway enthusiasts use the archives a huge amount — but to people researching nursing, people researching how people have been dealt with in public hospitals, is just endless!” she said.

“PHD students and uni students are far outweighed by ordinary people, who often in cases do extraordinary research.

I think research is a bug and history research is a particularly strong bug; if you get it, you’ve probably got it for life.”

Orange City Life got the opportunity to speak with Wendy while she was in town for the opening of the travelling exhibition Captured: Portraits of Crime 1870 - 1930. Captured features amazingly well-preserved photographic portraits with descriptions of prisoners sourced from Gaol Photographic Description Books stored in the State Archives.

The exhibit is a unique window into the past and a small taste of what treasures lie hidden in the vast State Archives.

“It has literally been over 30 years since we started to index them,” said Wendy. “One of the members of staff at the time was a family historian and she said everyone is going to love these, they will love having access to them and she is right. To have people’s faces is just appealing on so many fronts, and I personally find fascinating the written description of the scars and the marks on people’s bodies.”

Isaac will be going to Thailand as part of a Dragon boat team while Maddalena is an Australian representative at the World Scout Jamboree in USA.

Orange’s newest group of community thespians are taking their first production out of the theatre and into the more intimate setting of the Peisley Street Gallery.

Pinnacle Players was formed several months ago with the aim of staging plays outside of traditional theatre spaces.

Their first production ‘Art’, a comedy by award winning playwright Yasmina Reza, looks at the change in dynamics of the friendship between three men after one of them pays an inordinate amount of money for a controversial artwork.

The cast features local actors Alvaro Marques as Marc, Nick Tucknott as Serge and Mark Coster as Yvan.

“Our vision is to create unique theatre experiences,” said Pinnacle Players director Peter Young. “What we are trying to do is

match works with venues so obviously what better place to do a show about art, than an art gallery!”

‘Art’ (originally written in French) premiered in Paris before moving to London’s West End and later Broadway.

Alvaro says he was drawn to the script as it was a play which hasn’t been performed in Orange before and he loved the character of Marc.

“This is an exciting opportunity to work with a new company and continue with my love of acting and performing,” said Alvaro, who was also intrigued by the idea of performing theatre in such an unusual space. “‘Art’ is about art, so having it take place in the gallery here makes it more interesting in a way,” he said.

“The challenges for us, are that we have

quite a small working space, we are very close to the audience. It is interesting doing a play like this.”

“Yes,” added Nick. “It is a really new experience being in a venue where it is so intimate and I have no real orchestra pit barrier between myself and the audience, being able to see everyone and everyone, being able to see me so up close and personal.”

While art is key to the story, Nick said it is really a story of relationships.

“It’s about these friends, who have been friends for a long time, and how they relate and how they talk to each other, how they challenge each other in a sense,” he said.

“So, your preconceptions will be challenged around friendships and what they mean to you and how you see yourself within those friendships too.”

‘Art’ will be staged at the Peisley Street Gallery from July 19 – 27.

CYMS throw a ball Orange CYMS Rugby League Club are throwing a winter ball!

The formal affair will take place at the Orange Ex-Services Club on 27 July and feature a two-course meal, raffles and live entertainment.

“We want to get the whole community involved,” said club committee member Jeff Mullins, who is organising the fundraiser.

“There will be a heap of raffles and every raffle ticket gives you the chance to win anything. If your numbers drawn, you come and pick an envelope and you could win a $25 voucher or you might win boxing gloves signed by Mike Tyson!”

Local musician James Rutten will be performing during the two-course meal, followed by a DJ to get to crowd up and dancing ‘til late.

Words of Wisdom with Melise Coleman This week I caught up with a true gentleman, Cliff Armstrong.

“At school I wasn’t real brilliant, even though I have done quite well regardless. I enjoyed myself always. I never put myself on a pedestal, I was just Cliff Armstrong, and that’s all I wanted to be.”

Where and when were you born? Orange, 1936.

My Dad lost a lot of good men called up to go to war, he was a part of the VDC which was weekends and night training, so along with that he was running an orchid, he was a very strong man.

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? To be honest, like what you’re doing and to mix with people.

What is your favourite childhood memory?

Christmas was always good even in the war time. I felt that Christmas was something special, when I got married that was another great memory. I was 24 and Yvonne was 22.

What was your first job? I was brought up on the Orchard at Nashdale (Mum and Dad owned it), I worked on it all my life, as soon as I was old enough to remember things, I was working on it... my first job was a bugger of a job, it was pulling or chipping blackberries out of apple trees. Blackberries were a big problem in those days, birds would sit on the tree and spread the seeds so blackberries would grow in between the trees.

Dad was a very progressive orchardist; he was one of the first to go into crawler tractors instead of horse and cart.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I didn’t want to go on the Orchard initially, I wanted to be a truck driver, we used to have trucks come and cart our fruit to Sydney, I got very friendly with the drivers, I used to go to Sydney with them. My Dad said, ‘oh that’s a terrible life- I need you’ and that was it, I stayed on the Orchard.

What big world events were the most memorable while you were growing up? I could remember I was only about five when the war was

The government controlled the price of fruit, when the war was on the fruit went up and they were encouraging the farmers to produce fruit to keep Australia fed.

They called the VDC up when things started getting a bit serious, they were worried about them coming to Australia, as they were in Darwin a few times, and followed a Manly ferry into Sydney Harbour. They took the men to make emergency airstrips, which were about two miles long.

I understood the war well.. at school they dug a big air raid tunnel. If we got bombed we would go into the tunnels about 6ft deep.. Mum wasn’t real happy about it because the kids used to get in it and get a bit dirty. *laughs*

‘I’ve got a blind date’. Yvonne was from Sydney and soon enough I was going back and forth to Sydney, my dad said son.. you better marry that girl, so I did. *laughs* We used to work together a lot, we loved each other very much.

Also Nashdale School. At school (Nashdale Primary) the Teacher walked out of the classroom talking on the phone, when he came in and said, the war is over kids, go home - that was about 10 o’clock in the morning, we were all real happy to go home.

Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? My Dad, he taught me everything.

What are you most proud of? I’m very proud of getting married and having kids.

There were blokes on the Field Days board which started it that I looked up to very much, they were very dedicated. They would have 30 odd voluntary members on the committee, it was amazing.

How did you meet your wife? My relation said,

What did you get up to in your younger years? I was involved in the Orange City Pipe Band

‘I’ve got a blind date for ya, I said.. alright then I’m doin not much’.., I played squash that afternoon with my mate and after I put a suit on, he said ‘where you goin’ I said

from the age of 16, I used to do drumming in Scouts, we used to travel all over NSW.. I taught children at Nashdale Primary School to play the drums for 2-3 years. I still love

music. I was involved in a fair bit of sport, I used to love hockey.

I was also very involved in the Orchard Field Days, they actually made me Chairman, Ground Chairman, and then overall Chairman. That was a big job, I really enjoyed it. It was a busy life, trying to keep the orchard running, that was my main goal. I put a lot of time into it, and Yvonne did too.

They made me a life member of the Australian National Field Days and wanted me to keep the apple and pear organisations going. I represented NSW for 11 years, going to meetings all over the place.

When they made me a life member, I was very proud of that, I still go, they still invite me, I was very proud to be invited back, I haven’t missed a Field Day.

Particularly outgoing President Clivia Frieden highlights their work with the youth of Orange “Our Club’s involvement with the Canobolas Rural Technology High School, supporting their student leadership team and their

hospitality students; and providing learning resources to the Glenroi Heights Public School is a pleasure every year. This year we were also fortunate to be able to assist two year-12 students from Molong High School to attend the National Youth Science Forum in Brisbane and Canberra respectively”.

Ms Frieden goes on to explain in her annual report: “We have made over $35,000 worth of donations over the past 12-months. The most significant local donations have gone to the Smith Family’s Learning for Life Program which allows us to support 17 local school students, the Domestic Violence Crisis Centre, the Orange Regional Suicide Prevention Network and FoodCare Orange. Support has also been given to the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, Legacy and Rotary Health; in addition to international programs through the Rotary Foundation.”

Each year the Club inaugurates their new cabinet whilst farewelling and thanking the prior years for their dedication and service.

The Club meets to reflect on the past years

activities whilst ushering in a new agenda of programs. Outgoing President Clivia Frieden and Incoming President Ed Zarnow have both highlighted the enthusiasm of the Club, their members and the hundreds of volunteer hours to Rotary projects committed throughout the year; with many more to come in the 2020.

President Ed Zarnow introduced his Board members for the coming year, confident and excited that the Club and members will again achieve great things for the Orange community.

We’ve received a good deal of feedback on the idea of Orange building a second playground – a Super Playground. For those interested in the type of thing that could be considered, here are some websites about other “super” playgrounds that have been contributed by readers.

My husband asked me to drive him to the hospital as he was worried about parking in time for his appointment.

After dropping him at the door I joined a conga line of others cruising around looking. After 20 minutes I found a slot and joined him as he waited. Conversation with others found the same frustrations.

SOLUTION: A 10 or 20 seat shuttle bus between the railway station where there is plenty of parking and the hospital where there is not enough. This would enable patients from the region to catch public transport all the way to the hospital and save them $20 taxi fares each way, allow locals to spend less time travelling to and from than they currently spend searching for a slot, and free scarce spaces for those who have no choice.

In the bible God describes himself as our heavenly father. All through the bible his children, the Jews and later Christians, behaved like typical teenagers. Ignoring his wise instructions, which were designed to benefit them, they constantly disobeyed and got themselves into a big mess. Time and time again God is patient with them. He showed us all just how far he would go to show his love and save His children by being born as a man and dying in their place to pay the price they couldn’t.

God is the ultimate model of the perfect father. He is patient, loving, righteous and personal. Everything we should be.

THUMBS UP to Joe , a young man who I recently had the pleasure of observing caring and supporting four young boys from Anson Street School. After swimming at the Aquatic Centre, I showered and dressed sharing the same change rooms with this group. Joe displayed compassion, empathy and control and wasn’t fazed by any little antics displayed while capably assisting these young men. Good on you Joe.

THUMBS DOWN to a middle aged couple travelling on a coach from Sydney to Orange on the evening of 17 June last, who bullied a 76 year old woman out of her seat in order that they could occupy seats on both sides of isle (4 seats between them). A young woman passenger said she had also been involved in an incident with them. We hope you enjoyed your trip.

THUMBS UP to Urban Café, I recently had the most enjoyable hamburger I have eaten for many years. Very tasty and gluten free. Great coffee and wonderful service and staff. They also have many gluten free sweets.

HUGE THUMBS UP to the medical team in ICU and medical ward at OHS especially Dr Ryan Abraham and nurses Joey and Kayla for their excellent treatment and care

during my recent stay in hospital.

THUMBS DOWN to the Orange Aquatic Centre, even though they have picked up hundreds of kids for swimming lessons and many hundreds of dollars, they still cannot repair some of the damage around the kids pools, those witches hats have been there for years.

BIG THUMBS DOWN to the woman who wasted my entire day on the 20th of June after she bought my iMac and couldn’t figure out how to configure the new settings. She then asked me to pay for the extra software after she bought it from me. I was not happy, if you can’t handle the product don’t buy it - simple.

THUMBS UP to Peter Ball and his team. An issue with my coolant, Peter slotted me in straight away and resolved the issue. What a humble man, honest and fair service.

nurses, I couldn’t have asked for better treatment. Your kindness and friendly smiles do a lot to make an anxious person feel more at ease. I was warmly greeted from someone I recognised who had shown great kindness to my mother whilst she was in Cherrywood before she passed away. The care and attention shown all through the procedure was very much appreciated. Everything was explained in detail and the recovery was so comfortable and quick. Thank you to all of you. You are a credit to the hospital.
