Orange City Life – Still free and giving back to our local community, ALWAYS!

There’s no doubt about it, when the temperature gets down to where it’s been over the past week, and stays there, it affects everything. Here at OC Life it’s been an unusually quiet week in many respects, but on the other hand there’s been plenty of things happening, they’re just not for this week. Hopefully, we’ll get a bit of relief from the consistently cold and low temperatures next week and be able to thaw out a bit. Speaking for myself, I hope our new air-conditioning unit is being installed today as scheduled and my wife and I too can get back to a warmer environment at home. Someone I know once said “I don’t do cold”, I now know why.

Why Orange 360 is so important

They arrived a bit late for this week’s edition, but I received a couple of letters earlier this week, both about parking issues and both make some thought-provoking points. Parking and parking fines have been a talking point lately for various reasons, so I’ll mention these and a couple of other things relating to parking in more detail next week.

It’s a bit hard not to sense the pressure that’s building as a result of the extreme drought conditions, the retail recession and the hardships that many people are facing at this present time. It’s times like these that communities like ours have a wonderful opportunity, either to bury our heads in the sand and hope it passes, or to step up and become part of the solution, albeit only as an interim measure for the time being. As a community, we have great wealth by and large, far more than most of us need. If those who can afford to do so, can be rallied and organised in some way to help some of those who are facing difficulty, wouldn’t that be simply wonderful? I know many people are already doing things but there’s always a lot more that can be done. How often have we seen Aussies rally to a cause in incredible ways? Is there someone or some organisation out there willing to take the lead and rally those of us looking to help, and provide an easy means to do so? A service club, Council, someone else?

If Orange360 could become the ‘go to’ source of information on the district for visitors and locals alike, that would be a real win, says Orange360 General Manager Caddie Marshall.

t has now been just over a year since Orange360 was born, the renamed heir of Brand Orange and Taste Orange before it. The changes in branding reflecting the changing scope of the tourism marketing organisation.

At its inception, Taste Orange was essentially an industry body for promoting the local wine industry, said Caddie.

“It was born out of the Orange Vignerons Association because they realised very early on that to grow awareness and reputation around an emerging wine region, they would get a lot more done quickly if they worked together and they created Taste Orange.”

Over time, as the organisation grew, they began to showcase not just the food and wines of Orange, but the full scope of activities around the district.

“They had other industry coming onboard asking how can we become involved? So, restaurants, cafes and retail all became involved,” she said.

“It became about letting people know that there was a lot more to see and do if they came to Orange.”

Today, Orange360 has a much larger geographical footprint, being the destination marketing body for not only Orange, but the Blayney and Cabonne Shires as well.

It was a natural move, said Caddie. The surrounding towns and villages benefit from Orange’s profile as a destination, while increasing the number of things people can see and do around Orange leads to longer stays and more money being spent locally.

“In Orange, we are limited by bed numbers, which is why we get really excited when things like Quest comes on board. So how do we increase the value of the visitor? It’s to get them to stay longer and do more things while they are here and get them to come back!

So that is really where we see our core focus is — doing that.”

The bulk of the funding for Orange360 is provided

by Orange City Council, Blayney Shire Council and Cabonne Shire Council, along with annual financial contributions by members of the organisation ranging from $150 to $5000 for their Corporate Package.

Based out of one small office on the platform of the Orange Railway Station, Orange360 is quite a lean operation. Caddie is the only full-time staff member, with three others employed part time to cover finance,

sales, marketing and member support.

Although, the Orange360 team are supported by the tourism staff at each of the three member Councils.

“We see our role in the whole tourism landscape as being the destination marketers. So, we go out there and build the campaigns and the collateral to be able to get people to consider coming to Orange to visit, whether it is during the week, or during a festival that’s our role,” said Caddie.

“Once they are here, the role of the visitor information centre is to disperse those people through the entire region.”

...Last year, in Orange alone, tourism is estimated to have injected $272 million into the local economy...

The centrepiece of marketing the Orange Region has been the four seasonal festivals: The Banjo Patterson Australian Poetry Festival in Summer, F.O.O.D Week in Autumn, Wine Week in Spring and the Winter Fire Festival coming up next month.

Orange360 works closely with the volunteer committees behind each festival, although they have taken a more hands-on organisational role to re-establish the previously defunct Winter Fire Festival back into the Orange calendar.

They also showcase the region at events such the Piermont Festival in Sydney, which was attended by 20,000.

And earlier this year, they launched the $262,000 Extend the weekend campaign, aimed at increasing visitor nights and spend in Orange.

One of Caddie’s next big projects is developing Orange and the surrounding villages as a bicycle tourism destination.

“Part of our other role is to work with our members

to help them develop their product, to continue to enhance the destination experience and so one of the big projects we are working on at the moment is — in partnership with the Joint Organisation of Central Councils — to really establish Orange as a bicycle tourism Mecca,” she said.

“We want to work on widening the road shoulders on identified cycling loops, so we can go to families and say Orange is a place where you and your family can ride, because that is a way of dispersing people into our little villages… we are putting in a significant funding application that will secure dollars for that.”

Caddie and the Orange360 team also keep busy supporting and encouraging member businesses and village groups to build their own events.

“It is about giving our little communities, our businesspeople and other community groups the support in terms of helping them raise profiles for their events,” she said.

“We have a database of over 10,000 consumers, we’ve got 12,000 Facebook followers, over 7,000 people following us on Instagram — that’s a powerful channel for little community groups, and small businesses to be able to tap in to.

“In April we had over 16,000 unique visitors to our website and it is sitting at around 15,000 each month… so that’s 15,000 people that have the potential of finding our members.”

Tourism benefits everybody, said Caddie. Last year, in Orange alone, tourism is estimated to have injected $272 million into the local economy.

“The visitor economy is incredibly important to us. It means there are job opportunities, it means we can attract more specialists, because we’ve got a vibrant economy to come and do business in, the tyre shops benefits from more people living here driving cars— so everybody benefits from tourism and that’s why I believe there is benefit in supporting Orange360 to make sure we keep that visitor economy growing,” said Caddie, who would like to see more local businesses join their 220-strong membership.

“It’s being a part of something; we want everyone to come to the table and share their ideas and then we can help facilitate that greater collective communication around inviting people to come to Orange.”

— community environmental engagement officer It was a work injury that got me into conservation actually. I was a brick layer for nearly 30 years, then I was going to buy a pub and hurt my back lifting kegs!

I was off for a year or more with needles and stuff like that, but no operation— thank God. I wasn’t going to go back to laying bricks, so I retrained at Orange TAFE down Forest Road. I did a Cert III in Horticulture and then one of the teachers asked if I would join his class in growing Australian natives.

He said, ‘Give it a go. I know you’re pretty passionate about natives and

you are pretty good on the Latin’ So I stayed another three years and got my Diploma of Conservation Land Management.

I joined Australian Conservation Volunteers close on 15 years ago and I ran programs with school kids, took backpackers to the mountains for bushwalks, doing regeneration work — so it just progressed from there.

One day the boss asked if I wanted to have a crack at the community engagement work and it clicked straight away — me and the community!

Habitat Connect was born three years ago and I’m now the community environmental engagement officer for Bathurst and Orange Councils.

I like working with the volunteers that turn up on Sundays, just because they want to do it! And I love revegetating the country as well. In the last 230 years we’ve pillaged this joint, cut down forests, grown crops, taken all the galleries of casuarinas off the riverbanks, we’ve caused massive erosion and silting of our creeks and rivers, so I’d love to see more revegetation work!

As so often happens now, this week my thoughts drifted off into what a life in retirement for me might look like.

Now don’t misread what I’m saying here, I’m not planning to retire anytime soon but at 71, from time to time I do ponder the thought of what it would be like.

It’s easy to imagine happy thoughts about a time when I can wake up in the morning and the biggest decision I could face for the day will be remembering which bins I have to put out tonight, is it recycle week or not?

That’s the humourous side of my thoughts, when I start thinking about retirement, I also wonder what will happen to Orange City Life, especially if my wife and I can’t sell it or hand it over to someone else? In the present media environment, it’s a not an easy business to sell and given my personal experience, it wouldn’t be an easy business to run successfully, unless you had a good deal of the right type of experience. Time will tell if anything is to happen on that front, but there’s also another possibility.

What if we just arrived at the point where we had no alternative but to close the doors once and for all? I wonder what would happen then? I think OC Life would be missed but I wonder for how long? How often have we heard of people and things that never get the recognition they deserve until they’re dead or gone? I wonder if it may be a bit like that with OC Life if it came to just closing the doors?

Having put nearly 12 years into the business, my sincere hope is that we will leave some sort of legacy, but it will be circumstances that determine whether that happens or not.

My biggest fear is that places

like Orange will ultimately be burdened with media outlets, all owned by people who have little understanding of what people in places like Orange feel or love about their lifestyle and community. Fact is, we are still very different from city people, we think differently, we act differently, we talk differently, and we appreciate things differently.

In some respects, we haven’t been spoiled and we still have a warmth about us and a sense of community, something big city life doesn’t have as much of anymore.

In my view, independently owned local publications like Orange City Life are the lifeblood of regional communities and should be preserved and supported for as long as possible.

No matter what’s happening in other places of the state, country or world, locals still love to read and hear about what’s happening in their own town.

TV stations can no longer do it, networked radio stations can’t do it, and newspapers owned by conglomerates can’t do it.

Sadly, locals can’t do it either, not because they’re not willing or keen to do, but simply because maintaining enough loyal local support today is very difficult.

To run any local media outlet, it would require strong and consistent local support through advertising, something that no longer happens. Many local businesses face a similar dilemma with many shoppers spending their money elsewhere, it’s the way of the world today.

For now, for a lot of people, Orange City Life is a special part of life here and my aim is for that to continue one way or the other for a long time to come. Please settle back now and enjoy another great issue!

25-year-old, Vanessa Foliaki has been carving up the women’s Rugby League world and makes no apologies for it.

FOOTBALL IS MORE THAN A GAME TO ME; IT’S INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF GIRLS AND GIVES THEM SOMETHING TO STRIVE FOR WHEN THEY GROW UP.

“I started footy at the age of six back in New Zealand. I grew up playing Rugby Union and made the switch to Rugby League full time in 2017. It was always a game that I loved - my Dad played Rugby growing up and I was inspired by him. He taught me all the skills I needed to play rugby, to kick, pass and tackle.”

Vanessa played junior football for the Orange Hawks, before debuting for the Canley Vale Dragons in 2014. One year later, Vanessa debuted for the Harvey Norman Jillaroos at the 2015 Auckland Nines, and it doesn’t stop there.

“New Zealand will always be my home as that’s where I was born and raised, though, Orange is my home away from home. I found my home here eight years ago and I’m so proud to represent my State, when people ask me where my home is in Australia, I say I’m an Orange girl.”

Vanessa has represented New South Wales since 2014, including being part of the first New South Wales team to win the Interstate Challenge in 2016.

This year, she has done it again!

“My footy journey so far has been amazing; I was lucky enough to come onto the scene in 2014 playing for NSW and the Jillaroos, some pretty special memories were created.”

Vanessa has represented NSW six times and played in a World Cup, “It was something that I always dreamed of doing.”

Talking Origin, Vanessa said, “Every year I learn to love this jersey even more. My favourite football memory is winning State of Origin for the first time in 17 years! History is only ever created once and

I’m very lucky to be a part of the first ever team to beat QLD!” “Football is more than a game to me; it’s inspiring the next generation of girls and gives them something to strive for when they grow up. Little girls now have us as role models and people to look up to - which is very cool. I often forget the role I play with inspiring the next generation but it’s a role that I welcome with open arms. I never had the opportunities as some of the kids have now and I just think how lucky they are!”

Known for her trademark headgear look, letting her ponytail fly, Vanessa continued, “Little girls want to wear headgear like me - the amount of messages we get from girls who look up to us is very encouraging. That’s why I play football.”

“Of course, the road hasn’t been easy due to some pretty bad injuries, but I’ve worked really hard to get back to where I was. I never take anything for granted and I’m very grateful to be given the opportunity to play Rugby League at the highest level.”

Vanessa is now going into her second National Rugby League Women’s season with the Sydney Roosters, in doing that she will be moving to Sydney for the next eight weeks. “I’m loving every moment of this lifestyle.”

“If I’m lucky enough to get selected for representative honours after the season - I will play and then take a much-needed break from footy. It’s been a pretty hectic calendar for us so it’s important that I step away from footy and take a well needed break.”

A lot was said when our very own Jack Wighton was called onto the big stage, though, rest assured he had always had the full support of his hometown.

A Bloomfield Junior in his younger years here in Orange, he was then successful through the Canberra Raiders junior system.

Having debuted in 2012, Jack has since played over 100 NRL games for the Canberra Raiders, he has also represented the Indigenous All Stars, NSW Country team and the Prime Minister’s XIII. His most recent achivement on the field was being called up to play in the NSW State of Origin side.

“When I was named in the team I was blown away, its been a massive 12 months, just last year I was getting stood down for the wrong things, so to be put in the NSW team a year later, it was amazing. My family were all wrapped, they know how hard I’ve worked and everything I do to try and be my best so they were happy for me.”

“I think it’s every blokes dream who plays footy to play on that arena, it was definitely a dream of mine.”

“Coming into game three, it really hit me about two days out from the game, just how big that arena was and how much was on the line. I felt a little bit more pressure considering I threw that pass in game one, to give QLD the try.. but I was feeling confident in the boys, so that helped.

“The buzz you get off the home crowd was amazing, as soon as you ran out you could feel the energy, the whole game I just thrived off it.”

The last minute try was the talk of the game and it wasn’t just the audience that was in shock, happy shocked that is. “I was in a little bit of desbelief after that try in the last minute, I thought it was a dream, I remember I couldn’t get my head around it at the time, it was unreal! The way we won just made it even better.”

During the celebrations after the game, Jack spotted something that looked all too familiar, “I saw a banner with my face on it in amongst the blatchy blues, that was pretty amazing, it was the Bloomfield Club from Orange, I went and said G’day to them, it was unreal, it’s always good to see support from your hometown, it really means a lot.”

“Knowing I’m inspiring our younger generation is a great feeling, I really cant wait to get back to Orange and get in amongst the crowd and local footy and what not, I remember when I was younger and the NRL would come to Orange that’s what it’s all about, it shows them if you try hard enough, you’ll get where you want.”

“As a kid my step Dad definitely had the most influence on my footy, he got me to all of my games and really kept me hungry, when I thought I wasn’t good enough he talked me through it and reminded me that I was good enough.”

But this Origin win, it’s really right at the top, it’s a dream come true.

To all of our younger generation looking to take on the NRL lifestyle, Jack has some wise words for you, “It sounds cliché, but never give up, if you put your mind to it you can achieve it, always back yourself and don’t look backwards, because you’re not going that way.”

low motion knock ons, dirty tackles and forward passes, those were the picturesque views of the crowd who showed up to watch the Golden Oldies strap on their boots in Spring Hill, for the charity match raising money for, ‘Give Me 5 for Kids.’

But of all else, who can forget the laughs, the sportsmanship and the fun that was had on the very same field.

Spring Hill Wood Ducks, Emulators, Bathurst Old Dogs and Central West Old Bulls put on a show, thanks to the players and the generous crowd who showed up, an amazing $6,298 was raised.

The charity match has been running for three years now, player and organiser Clive Walker mentioned it was great to see so many people come through the gates and also ‘oldies’ show up to play and get involved, “We had 50 players or more which is the most we have ever had. Some of the youngen’s played a bit hard but we will sort that out next year,” Clive laughed, “Someone pulled my hair out too.”

Their half time/quarter time breaks included the traditional ‘port pick

me ups’.

Barry Winnell added, “It was a great day, everything turned out well, even the weather, compared to last year which was a mix between snow and rain. This year was the biggest crowd we have seen to date, and being such a good day, all of the locals came down for a look.

But this isn’t to discourage you, I want you to take a drive out there, try to understand what our regional farming families are going through, pop into the local coffee shop and grab a coffee for everyone, or maybe a giftware store, buy up a storm you’ll have no idea the good you are doing. Introduce yourself to locals, they love a good yarn I’m telling you.

If you have links to a farming community, offer your time to help, creatives, get out there and use your social media power for good, take photos, paint pictures, go on a road trip.

Not everyone has the luxury of being able to donate funds, it’s understood everyone is fighting their own battles in life, but if you can do any of the above things mentioned, you’re turning a small town’s economy around, which in the long run, supports our struggling farmers.

BRITTANY TAKES ON HEARTBREAK HILL

BY MELISE COLEMAN On August 11, Orange local Brittany Davies will partner with her friend and take on the 2019 City 2 Surf covering a 14-kilometre course, starting from Hyde Park in Sydney’s CBD and ending at Bondi Beach.

“This is my first time participating so I am a little nervous, I haven’t done anything like it before,” said Brittany.

“I hope to make it through 14kms, that’s the first goal, Brittany laughed, “I’m dreading ‘Heartbreak Hill’ (the notorious Heartbreak Hill is the halfway point of the course). All

of my clients keep telling me that it is pretty hard.”

In competing in the course, Brittany is hoping to raise $500, to go to the Cancer Council.

“I’m very inspired by the work of Cancer Council NSW and I wanted to support them by raising money as part of my participation.

Unfortunately, my beautiful Nan has cancer.

“Every second person you talk to knows someone with cancer or is affected by it. At the moment I feel like I can’t do much to help my Nan

but by doing this I feel like I’m still doing something to help somehow, I just want to make a difference.”

“If I compete again next year, I will fundraise for Beyond Blue, as that is very close to my heart too. The more people that know, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family. he Orange Riding for Disabled are going to be busy in the coming month, along with their weekly Wednesday riding classes the centre will host its centre open day on July 31 coinciding with the Annual horse’s birthday on August 1. This event will kick off from 9.15am-2.30pm at RDA Orange Centre, The Overflow, Clifton Grove.

Parents and friends of those involved in the RDA programs are invited to come along to see a demonstration of the children’s riding skills, as well as assist them in feeding carrots to the horses and singing happy birthday.

The RDA team are extending an invitation to the public to come and join everyone for the open day.

HOW I GET MY KICKS

“As a five-year-old in a little town on the coast in South Devon I watched the live broadcasts of the moon landings. I don’t remember the first couple of landings, but from 14 onwards I remember watching those all live on TV on the BBC,” said Trevor.

“I remember thinking… Just ,Wow! this huge thing taking off with a huge flame at the back and going to the moon! It was absolutely amazing!”

Trevor said it was hard to escape the excitement around the space program during that period in history. He said countless school projects focussed on space and rockets, which naturally led him to an interest in the stars and astronomy as well.

“I remember going out quite often at night in my hometown in the UK and looking up at the stars and starting to recognise some of the patterns,” he said.

Trevor’s family relocated to Australia in the early 1970s, settling south of Brisbane. After finishing high school, he embarked on his university career and what has been a lifetime of learning ever since.

“I did my first degree at QUT in biology— microbiology, biochemistry then I went to UQ, the University of Queensland, to work and when that went from full-time to a part-time contract I enrolled in a second degree in Forest ecology,” he said.

That led to a job in Forestry with Queensland’s Griffith University, but then he moved down to Tasmania.

“I was a part time ranger at Cradle Mountain National Park for a bit, I did medical imaging, worked in a hardware store, did odd jobs here there and everywhere,” said Trevor.

“One year, I did a double diploma at TAFE in Civil and Mechanical Engineering then I was teaching engineering students the following year.

In 2008 Trevor started his Masters in Astronomy and the following year took up an opportunity to work in Central Australia.

“We worked out at Uluru for a year and I was the astronomer there… we did it for the resort and later the Ayres Rock Observatory,” said Trevor.

It was here, working alongside the local Aboriginal people, that Trevor took his first steps into the world of cultural astronomy; a field that is now the subject of his PhD studies and an area his diverse knowledge background has made him particularly suitable for.

Cultural astronomy is a very broad field with many, many sub disciplines within it. It covers things like Archeoastronomy, which is looking at the alignments

“It is many faceted; cultural astronomy covers a huge wide base of different things. So we look at stone arrangement sites and how the landscape is used astronomically, we also look at how the stars were used as calendars, seasonal calendars, that mark certain times of the years and also how certain stars indicate the breeding cycles of certain animals.

“When you see a particular star in the sky at night that means that this animal is breeding, that plant is flowering, this type of fish is available on the coast, or this migration is happening.”

Stars have even been used for weather forecasting, said Trevor, with the colour and rate of twinkling used to indicate what’s happening in the upper atmosphere.

“Some of the stars that appear orange red to us on a good clear night can wash out if there’s a lot of moisture up there in the atmosphere,” said Trevor. “Water vapour in the atmosphere absorbs more strongly in the red than in the blue end of the spectrum, so when you see normally reddish orange stars looking a bit pale almost turning to the whitish colour then there is a lot of moisture up there and that can indicate there is a storm front coming.”

While the importance of the stars has been noted and studied in cultures world-wide for some time, Trevor said it is only recently that more astronomers have begun to take an interest and bring their own knowledge to the field.

“That has been the major change in the last few years,” he said. ‘Before it was anthropologist and the ethnographers coming in and being interested in astronomy, now we’ve got the astronomers coming in and because we have more familiarity with the night sky and how it works we are able to look at a lot of archival records and start pulling out more meaning from them because the astronomy part had been missed by the previous researchers.”

A lot of Trevor’s work involves talking to local elders and scouring historical records with an eye to the night sky at that particular date, even using computer simulations to map the movement of stars and planets with particular landmarks or important cultural sites.

“Sadly, there is a lot of that knowledge that has been fragmented because of colonisation,” said Trevor, who sees his work as a step towards recovering some of that lost knowledge and making it accessible for people today.

“So in that respect we are all working together to try and piece together all these little bits and fragments to build up the bigger picture of the how it was precolonisation,” he said.

“I’ve been doing it for five years on Wiradjuri Country, but still just scratching the surface.”

Where did we find them? None other than PCYC. The school holiday activity program offered court play, music rock workshops, gymnastics and an in-club movie just to name a few. FARM TRESPASS LEGISLATION

Farmers, agricultural businesses and stakeholders are encouraged to have their say on a new Bill to protect the privacy of Australian farmers and producers against the unlawful actions of animal activists.

The Criminal Code Amendment (Agricultural Protection) Bill 2019 introduces new offences for the incitement of trespass, property damage, or theft on agricultural land. Offenders will face up to five years’ imprisonment.

The Australian Government wants to see tough new penalties in place to help protect farmers and their businesses from people who seek to destroy what they do for a living. I’m encouraging all interested parties to put forward their views on the new laws, along with their

own experiences on dealing with farm invasions and theft.

The Bill sends a clear message to animal activists that if you use the personal information of family farmers to incite trespass then you will be risking jail.

Our farmers have enough on their plate dealing with the drought and shouldn’t need to lie awake at night worrying about these deluded activists.

Submissions to the Senate Committee are open until 31 July, and can be made confidentially in writing or online.

CONSTITUTIONAL RECOGNITION I’m strongly supportive of the proposal by the Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP, Minister for Indigenous Australians, to have Australia’s Indigenous people recognised in the Constitution.

Constitutional recognition is a very important part of the reconciliation process and I would urge Australians of all political persuasions to approach it in good faith, warmth of spirit and with an open mind.

The Prime Minister has confirmed that the referendum will not be about creating a third chamber of parliament and this is not what is being proposed. As Ken said in his recent speech to the National Press Club, his approach is going to be based on consensus – working through a process of true co-design. That process will no doubt be difficult at times, but I don’t think the challenge is beyond us as a nation. I think we have the goodwill to get this done.

I’ll certainly be backing Ken and the process of consultation that he’s putting in place.

I would encourage all Australians to engage and participate.

CUTS TO DEEMING RATES More than 7,500 people in the Central West will benefit from a multi-million dollar boost over the next four years thanks to a decision to cut deeming rates.

Deeming rules are used to work out the income from your financial assets and is a key concept in the Age Pension income test.

The lower deeming rate will decrease from 1.75 per cent to 1.0 per cent for financial investments up to $51,800 for single pensioners and $86,200 for pensioner couples. The upper deeming rate will be cut from 3.25 per cent to 3.0 per cent for balances over these amounts.

Under the new rates age pensioners whose income is assessed using deeming will receive up to $40.50 a fortnight for couples, $1053 extra a year, and $31 a fortnight for singles, $804 a year.

Changes to the deeming rate will also benefit people receiving other income tested payments including the Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment, and income support allowances and supplements such as the Parenting Payment and Newstart.

The decision will take effect from September in line with the regular indexation of the pension and will be backdated to July 1.

Grooblies Using grooblies is kind-of like recycling, but maybe even better.

Like most kids, they’ll open the new box or packet, claiming not to have seen the old pack with the grooblies. Even if there’s no new pack, they’ll leave the last of the grooblies rather than eat them. Go figure.

The notion of writing about The Grooblies came back to mind last week as I fed our hungry sheep in the back paddock. As you all know, there’s not much grass around at the current time, and our fluffy friends are hanging out for a bit of a boost as they lick the dirt, searching for a tasty morsel. Every time I go out the back door, they baaaaaaa at me, expecting a feed. Anyway, instead of just grabbing a big pile of hay off the large round bale I have sitting in the trailer to redo the hutches in the chook pen, I mopped up all the hay grooblies from the base of the trailer – and managed to make a whole barrowload! With the gold-like cost of hay these days, I saved some precious bucks and the chooks didn’t know any different.

On the grooblies downside, I recently pulled apart our slow-running bathroom sink drain to find all kinds of nasty grooblies doing their dirty work. Innocuous as they may seem, grooblies can be as horrid as they can be wonderful – ignore them either way at your peril.

Coming back from the Pennsylvania forest last weekend after a day of woodcutting in the forest (yes, you need a permit, but go online, easy to get), I was unloading our booty onto the woodpile, and noticed a huge number of wood grooblies on the ground. As well as the slow combustion beast, we also have an open fire in the ‘formal’ room that belts out some fine heat on the special occasions we light it.

It takes quite a few little bits of kindling to get it going each time it’s started up, and gathering up a pail full of wood grooblies was the way to go. Job done, Time saved.

Their loss... enormous number of his dishes over the past decade. Last week, he seared and sealed some meat in the pan, which left him with some fat, some crispy half-burnt pieces, chunky bits and other things definitely considered as grooblies. I cheered as Jamie said he’d be making sauce out of the pan leftovers. He joyfully poured his just boiled ‘pee-wee’ (you know what I mean) from the saucepan into the grotty pan to make the most awesome sauce. He added a few other delights, and the juices soaked up all the crunchy stuff and the grooblies became magic. He looked to be in heaven when he dipped his pinkie in for a sneaky taste.

It is dizzying to try and keep track of all the awards Macquarie Medi Spa have won and keep winning year after year. But for owner Karla McDiarmid, it is not just about collecting accolades or good marketing, she takes the award process seriously and sees them a chance to improve and further grow her thriving business.

“Definitely,” said Karla. “They make you ask things like: What are your plans for the future?

What are you doing for the environment? What do you give back to the community? If you don’t have an answer for those questions you don’t know where your gaps are in your business. So I always use it to reflect on what I can improve on for the next year and that’s what we do —you’ve got to be constantly working on it.”

And Karla is certainly not afraid of hard work.

It is not uncommon to find her putting in 15hour days between her Bathurst and Orange Salons. Even early on, when she first set off for beauty college after leaving school at Year 10, she would make the three-hour journey back to Bathurst to work whenever she wasn’t in class.

“It was a very long year. I used to travel backwards and forwards on public transport, I did three days a week in Sydney and four days a week at a salon in Bathurst,” said Karla.

Her hard work did not go unnoticed and upon finishing her study, Karla was offered a job at the Observatory Hotel in Sydney. And that role soon led to a job with skin care giant Dermalogica.

Just three years later, at 20 years of age, Karla seized the opportunity to step out on her own.

“The original salon that I did my year 10 work experience with at Bathurst was then for sale.

So, I bought the salon that I originally started with, it’s a bit of a crazy story!”

Since taking over Macquarie Medi Spa, Karla has not stopped to rest on her laurels and is constantly striving for improvement.

“In that time, we’ve rebranded about three

times, gutted the shop in Bathurst did everything again from scratch, changed the colours, changed the logos several times,” she said.

“In those early days we won Bathurst Business of the Year twice! For a beauty salon to win that twice in a town like Bathurst is just incredible, but that’s what helped me keep propelling the business forward.”

In 2017, Macquarie Medi Spa Bathurst was named the Global Winner for Beauty Salon of the Year at the World Luxury Spa Award — a big moment for Karla and her business as it was the push she needed to open her second salon in Orange.

“That was absolutely incredible! And that was when I thought, ‘Oh my gosh this is an amazing business!’” said Karla.

“And then Myer was closing and we were getting Orange clients driving all that way to us for facials and we were posting products to Orange every second or third days, so it just became a no-brainer— the demand was there!”

And since expanding to Orange, Macquarie Medi Spa has grown month by month and now 20 staff are employed across Karla’s two salons.

“And we’re fully booked! We just had a fabulous end of financial year; it was on par with Christmas week that’s how crazy it was!”

The awards have also kept coming for Macquarie Medi Spa. Karla has just returned from the 2019 World Luxury Spa Awards in St Petersburg, Russia, where she was awarded Best Beauty Spa in Oceania and Best Spa Director for Australia!

That same evening (a few time zones apart), Karla also took out the 2019 Orange Business Award for Experienced Business Leader of the Year!

And later next month, Macquarie Medi Spa are finalists in four categories at the Australian Beauty Industry Awards (Best Customer Care, Best Team Training, Best Team of the Year, and Best Spa Director).

Karla said she is incredibly proud of her team and believes constantly reassessing the way they do business and working to improve on what they do has been the key to their success.

“We just keep training; our staff are always training — every day,” said Karla. “I’m constantly attending seminars and educating myself, just constantly learning, looking at new product to bring into the salon, keeping ahead of the competition and being at the forefront of the industry.

“We are always working on providing 5-Star service and world-class treatments, but it is a constant work in progress, we never stop improving.”

When it comes to people needing help with seeing the reality of the situation, the numbers are startling.

Deloitte Access Economics and comparethemarket. com.au surveyed 3,000 people to compile The Financial Consciousness Index and found: • Less than half (40%) of Australians meet the basic threshold for financial literacy and capability.

• 41% of Australians with a mortgage don’t check interest rate changes because they either have no interest, don’t know what the RBA cash rate is, or do not see the relevance to them.

• And of those with a mortgage, 68% of Australians said they have not stress tested their home loan.

• 45% of Australians do not trust insurance companies or retail banks, a significantly higher figure compared to other financial institutions.

• Only half of Australians are confident that they’re getting the best deal on all their financial products (and I’d argue many of the remaining 50% think they’re getting the best deal, but probably aren’t).

• On average, 28% of Australians know there is a better deal on their superannuation, home loan, health insurance and credit card but do not act on it.

Why does it appear there is so much apathy amongst us?

All Abilities Day

ore than 300 skaters with a disability took to the ice rink on Friday 12 July as part of the LiveBetter All Abilities Day during the Bathurst Winter Festival. A partnership between LiveBetter Community Services and Bathurst Regional Council, the day aims to empower people of all abilities to be part of the Winter Festival and step outside their daily routine.

With sessions running on the hour between 10am and 4pm, skaters had the opportunity to enjoy the winter wonderland in a safe and supported environment with reduced capacity and volunteers on hand to assist.

LiveBetter’s Community Access Manager, Michelle Stark, said organisers were expecting big numbers at today’s All Abilities event and were not disappointed by the turn out, with people travelling from as far as Warren and Nyngan.

“For some it’s their first-time ice skating and it’s amazing to see the pure joy on their faces when they get out there,” said Ms Stark.

“It’s also great to see multiple disability service providers come together to enjoy the day. It gives participants a chance to meet

new people and socialise,” she said.

In addition to providing ice skating sessions for people with disability, Bathurst Regional Council has also offered paid employment to several NDIS participants as part of the Winter Festival.

LiveBetter customer Lara, who accesses the SLES (School Leavers Employment Support) program, gained paid employment at the Winter Festival. Lara’s duties included selling tickets, handing out skates and helping people get on and off the ice rink.

“My long-term goal is to work full time. Being able to work at the Winter Festival gives me independence and gets me out into the community,” said Lara.

It’s the third year that LiveBetter has partnered with Bathurst Regional Council and Ms Stark said the organisation loved being involved.

“All Abilities Day empowers people of all abilities to have the opportunity to take part in and enjoy the Winter Festival. It’s vital that these events continue to be accessible and inclusive in our communities because everyone deserves the right to enjoy life and participate in activities anyone can do,” Michelle said.

A Charity Rugby Union Day was held at the Spring Hill Recreation Ground on Sunday July 7th. The Old boy Union players were playing the raise funds for the “Give me Five for Kids�

Campaign. Teams from Bathurst, Orange and Spring Hill were involved.

Players were from Bathurst Old Dogs, Bathurst Old Bulls, Spring Hill Wood Ducks and the Emulators (Emus Old Boys). They started with each team playing each of the others, but by the end subs were coming from all teams.

The Woodduck Challenge has special rules for the older players who wear different colour shorts, Red for the over 50s and Gold for the over 60s. As an Old boys game they all were over 35. They have a game every year.

Pip Orr picked up a camera when she was six years old and never looked back.

Ever since she has rarely been without a camera handy and loves to use the camera to tell a story.

“I like to approach my work in the purest form, that being no photoshop or hardly any touch up at all,” said Pip, who has a collection of 40 photographs currently on exhibit at Rosebank Gallery in Millthorpe.

“The work demonstrates my love of people, places and nature in Australia and overseas. The photos tell a story,” said Pip, who has also worked as a photojournalist.

“Photography and writing are my true, ultimate passions ,” said Pip. “Visitors to the

exhibit will discover a cascade of colours from the sky that look like paintings. They will also discover my trek through the jungles of Malaysia to discover the true Malaysian Aboriginals and their Kampong villages.

“I have been fortunate to have had the ultimate experiences in remote islands in the Cook Islands and have many more photos to relay these trips.”

The exhibition showcases about 40 photographs Pip has taken over the years.

Unique Photography by Pip Orr will be on exhibit at Rosebank Gallery in Millthorpe until the end of the month.

Central West artists on display Here, Now

Works from more than 100 local artists are now on display at the Orange Regional Gallery.

The annual Here, Now exhibition features only central west artists. It is open to artists, over the age of 16, living in the local government areas of Orange, Bathurst, Blayney, Cabonne, Cowra, Forbes, Lachlan Shire, Lithgow, Oberon, Parkes and Weddin Shire.

The gallery asked artists for new works not exhibited before and created within the last two years.

Orange City Council’s Services Policy Committee Chair Cr Stephen Nugent said he was proud to open the Justinexhibition Landers on8:30 Friday night.

“Every year the gallery sets aside space and time to feature our local artists and it’s great more than 100 people submitted works,” Cr Nugent said.

“We’ve had several pieces submitted by young artists between 16 and 20 years old, exhibiting for the first time and that is fantastic to see… This exhibition provides great exposure and experience for our locals.”

Here/Now will run until July 28.

“I originally turned to permaculture, because my methods of gardening weren’t working,” said Jennifer Ringbauer, sustainability educator at Bathurst’s Rahamim Ecology Centre.

“I was working terribly hard at creating food in my garden and none of the systems I was using worked. So, I looked at permaculture to find a system to grow food successfully and take a lot of the work out of gardening.”

Permaculture is difficult to briefly define, but essentially it is a set of design principals for creating a more sustainable way of life. It encompasses many elements, but one practical benefit is using these principles to create bountiful, food producing gardens that work synergistically in their setting. “[Permaculture] looks at creating a community in the soil, in the plants that you grow, so they work together to feed each other and nourish each other in community, so you don’t really have to put many inputs into the garden itself,” said Jennifer.

“If the system works, all you need to do is reap the benefits from the produce that you create in that

garden….but permaculture takes things further, it turned my world upside down in the way I looked at the world and the community that we live in also the economy we work within.”

Starting July 29, Jennifer will be teaching a Permaculture Design Certificate through Rahamim, sharing her passion for these principals and how we all can benefit.

“The course I’m running is about utilising earth in a better way,” she said. “It is a course that’s running over a semester on Monday nights for four hours each week and also a couple Saturdays we will go see farms, houses and blocks that have implemented some permaculture design to their place.”

Rahamim, situated on 10 acres south of Bathurst, is designed with permaculture principals. It includes a community garden, orchard, urban sensitive water design, market garden, herb spiral, ponds, compost systems and many places designed for habitat for local wildlife.

For Jennifer and others at Rahamim showing people how to utilise the earth in a better way is not just a

passion it is a calling.

Founded by Sr. Patricia Powell, Rahamim Ecology Centre is a ministry of the Sisters of Mercy with a mission to care for our planet.

“It is quite deep,” said Jennifer, “She basically saw the Earth as the ‘poor’ at the moment and this ministry is trying to create a way to look after Earth and connect with Earth in a deeper way.”

Rahamim’s work involves advocacy for the environment, education about the environment and building connection with Earth.

“As sustainability educator, my role is to teach people how to garden and how to live sustainably, which involves organic gardening methods, permaculture, regenerative farming also going into the kitchen and being able to create good food,” said Jennifer.

“Making people aware of the benefits and the simplicity of being able to live sustainably.”

God created joy and that joy is only really felt by knowing Him. So I urge you to keep removing all the things in your life that have taken your focus away from Him. And I hope that as you unclutter your life you may find God during the process.

While it’s a nice idea, what about the many, many people who have gas and electric heating? Why have they not been thought of? Editor: Please be reasonable. The logistics of giving people a donation towards gas or electricity would create enormous complications whereas providing wood is simple and straight-forward. Why not just feel pleased that at least some people are being provided for in this way. Your turn may come

through something else on another day. Focus on the ‘nice idea’ part of your comment and forget the rest.

The 2 cars honked horns aggressively and one even cut in front of another vehicle to turn right from the left lane. She was so unnerved she had to abandon the test. Have they forgotten they were once learner drivers?
