Who we are

Once again, there are some great stories in OC Life this week, stories about great people doing great things and a lot of other uplifting bits and pieces to make you feel good. It’s important that I tell you that because if we look around, there’s a lot of not so encouraging stuff happening. I don’t want to dwell on anything particular but over the last week, there has been plenty in the news about people facing hardship for one reason or another and if we’re not careful, the bad news can tend to dominate our thinking and leave us feeling worse than we probably should.

Orange City Life’s mission is to bring out the best in people, all while capturing the true spirit of our wonderful region.

Orange City Life can’t change what’s happening in our world, but we can put a little sunshine into your day and that’s what we’ve set out to do again this week. I hope that by the time you reach page 60 of this week’s issue, you will have had reason to smile quite a few times, maybe even be encouraged to step outside your comfort zone and do something good for yourself or someone else, or maybe just enter one or more of our competitions, who knows, you may just be one of this week’s lucky winners.

A familiar face who many would know from the wine industry, Peter Gibson, has recently rekindled an old passion and occupation of his Pottery/Ceramics. After viewing his beautiful work, it’s hard to understand how it was that he ever gave it up!

eter explains, “It started at school where there were a couple of pottery wheels, (I was a boarder at a school in Sydney) and there wasn’t much to do on weekends, we were allowed to go into the art rooms so, I got some clay and started fiddling around and sort of taught myself. I struggled like buggery I might add, I made ceramic pieces for my major works for my HSC, they were pretty naive and clumsy now that I look back, but that’s what I did.”

After working in various jobs, from landscaping to farming, Peter quickly felt the urge to get back to his creative lifestyle.

“I applied for and was very lucky to get into the National Art School, in those days there were only around 18 students allowed in each year. I bluffed my way in and spent three years there fulltime, learning and honing my skills.

Eventually I set up a pottery studio in Sydney, I would be throwing a couple hundred pots each day, with that I supplemented it with a bit of part time teaching with TAFE, that’s how I ended up in Orange, they did have a very strong ceramics department here.”

Peter continued, “I ended up retired from teaching, we put a Vineyard in and got sidetracked with raising a family and running a Vineyard.. I got back into it in 2013, we created the cellar door and now I’m re-training myself, getting back to making some of the things I used to enjoy making and at the same

time, my wife Deb is learning the ropes.”

“I just love pottery- It’s a really tactile thing, there’s a lot of skill in it and I suppose it’s like a lot of things, you’ve got to put the hours in and if you don’t practice you get rusty, so I’m reacquainting myself, I haven’t lost the skills completely I’m just tuning them up a bit,” Pete laughed, “I’m making close to what I used to now, I’m just having fun making what I want to make.”

“I was quite motivated again as a lady came to me recently wanting to learn the ropes of it all, I gave her some lessons and she was really excited, it was just nice to help her through it. Whilst I was showing her I had time to make a few things, and the next day I walked into the studio and thought.. I’m going to spend a day in the studio,” Peter smiled.

“I do try and keep it for wet days, Orange is the kind of place that during winter you can get weeks of wet weather, and I’m far more productive then. The moment the sun is shining I’m pruning vines.

“What I’ve been making lately is a whole range of things for the cellar door, not only to sell, but for us to use, homemade water jugs just like making things that you can use, plates, bowls, platters, cups, functional objects. I’ve made a lot of other objects in the past though functional is what I generally go for.

“It’s lovely to give people things that you make, our motto around here is that ‘We grow and make things’ whether its wine, vegetables or fruit, it’s just a nice occupation.”

My weekends are usually a Tuesday/ Wednesday - the perks of working in hospitality, though I am always keeping busy, I’ve always loved ‘events’ and easily developed an interest in that field. I then began to tie the studies in with my sport passion, I did work experience at some Suncorp Super

Netball matches which was amazing.

Sport is definitely my biggest passion, I fit that in between work wherever possible, I also spend a lot of time in Sydney umpiring Netball. I started out travelling to umpire the metro league competition (similar to the Central West Regional League competition but much bigger scale). It allowed me to be coached and mentored by some

amazing umpires. From there I was awarded my National A Badge and invited to participate in the Premier League Competition, which is the top umpiring program in the State, with about 20 umpires invited to be involved.

I guess I travel because I love to be challenged and an opportunity in Sydney presented itself, so I took it.”

Orange City Council is soon to get a new Chief Executive Officer, the selection process is currently happening.

It’s a very responsible position within our City and I wonder if, as a community, whether we should be having some form of input into the process, or at least letting our feelings be known on the type of person we want. I’m not sure if there is a process that enables this but if there isn’t, why not? The Chief Executive Officer is in some respects Orange’s Prime Minister and as such, has the power to influence or impact on many of the important decisions that will affect the future of our City. I for one, wouldn’t mind having a say in the type of person we want in that role. Councils are forever seeking input from the community over things that affect them, so why not something as important as this?

I think it’s fair to say that a lot of locals, and I’m among them, feel our current administration including our current group of Councillors have been a disappointment. Of course, it’s very normal for anyone in any form of government to attract their fair share of knockers and Orange Council is no different. It should also be noted that perception is reality and the current perception of the current council by a lot of people, is that it lacks leadership, vision and isn’t serving any worthwhile purpose. We have an acting CEO and that in itself suggests Council is functioning more in a holding pattern than anything else. We have a bunch of Councillors who are fast

becoming known more as rescission makers or a brigade of flip floppers.

I know that sounds terrible, but seriously, how else can one say it? Their actions and record of achievements over the last year or two as a team speaks for itself.

My personal view is that we need someone at the top who clearly knows how to lead, and lead in such a way that people will want to follow. Interestingly, it appears that Council may be on the same page as me with this. I saw the advertisement for the position recently and the very first words at the top say Lead, Support and Innovate. How great would it be if the person we ended up with was seen to demonstrate these qualities within a few months of taking over the reins?

Orange, like so many other rural cities, is contending with issues that have never had to be faced before, and like with any new or unforeseen situation, different cities deal with such things in different ways.

Some take reactive measures, others get pro-active, while others sit on their hands hoping the problems will go away.

If Orange is looking to appoint a new Chief Executive Officer with the will, skills and ability to Lead, Support and Innovate, and they choose someone who clearly demonstrates they have the heart to do this, we can all look forward to seeing a more pro-active approach than we’re currently seeing from our Council overall. I for one, look forward to seeing someone in the position just like that.

From Panuara to NSW Union Player of the Year. It’s a big feat, but it’s got Grace Hamilton’s name written all over it.

Grace has played Rugby Union professionally since 2016, though, this year has been her biggest yet; not only named in the Australian Wallaroos team, she was named Wallaroos Captain and NSW Waratahs Super W Player of the year.

Grace mentioned she began playing Rugby on a University exchange in the USA. Growing up with a Rugby loving family, funnily enough it was actually netball that Grace had a love for and excelled in. “The school I went to didn’t have netball, and I knew all of the rules for union, so I decided to play that instead, that brought me to where I am today.”

Grace joined the Waratahs Super W team in 2014 and then in 2016, was selected in the Australian Wallaroos squad. “It’s been quite a whirlwind of a journey so far, but it’s been an exciting one. It’s different than every other sport I’ve played, the comradery and the friendships you make in the game is so important and the reason I keep playing, they are my family away from family. I’m the only one of my immediate family to live in Sydney so I lean a lot on my teammates in that regard.

“I was doing my last university assignment when my coach rang me and in a roundabout kind of way, slipped into the conversation that I was named Captain.

It was quite shocking and surreal, I am so thankful for the opportunity, it’s not something that I ever thought would happen to me. I didn’t even think I’d be playing rugby so for me to be in this position, to be able to captain Australia, it’s pretty special.

I ended up calling my Dad, he was out cutting wood and he was pretty happy.

Grace said, “This Jersey means the world to me, I’m honoured to be given the opportunity to wear the green and gold. The best thing about it is every single girl has the skill set to be there, you’re all doing your job, you’re working hard, and you’re working hard for each other. I remember looking up into the stands at our first home game and all I

could see was my family, they got into the dress ups wearing a sea of yellow jumpers and wigs, it’s a pretty special feeling.”

Grace ensures past players and coaches over the years have really helped her to be her best and really took her to the next level helping her to believe in her own talents.

“We had a fan day not long ago and one of the girls said to me, ‘I’m going to be wearing that jersey with you one day’ and I said yeah you will! To be someone that the younger generation aspires to be like or become their role model, that’s pretty special, I didn’t really have that when I was growing up, women in sport have come such a long way, it doesn’t matter the team, the sport, any shape and/or size, we are doing great things.

Grace was only recently named as NSW Waratahs Player of the Year, as you can expect, she is completely humble about it, even admitting her late entrance to the award ceremony with a laugh. “That was exciting for me, I never thought I would get an award and its completely a testament to the girls in that team, we all look out for each other and I feel like the award that I received the entire team deserves that.”

For now, Grace has to keep her mind on the next challenge in the Bledisloe double header test, taking on the All Blacks this weekend in Perth, as well as building to the 2021 World Cup. “It’s a special sport that I am very privileged to be a part of, I’m just the country girl who dreamt big.” A true force to be reckoned with, good luck Grace!

Gymnasts competed in a range of Gymsports including Women’s, Trampoline and Tumbling and Sports Acrobatics.

On Saturday August 17, the Rural Women’s Access Group (RWAG) are inviting the public to their information day at the Lucknow Hall.

A partnership between NSW Country Women’s Association, Health Services and Women in the Community, are coming Sandra Chenney, Helen James, Women’s Health; together to celebrate 30 Anne Smart and Betty McDonald OAM years.

The voluntary group was Mrs. Betty McDonald OAM has been involved formed in 1988, during a year of drought after with The Rural Women’s Access Group from its a National Farmsafe Conference. It was there founding, she explained, “I think there is a great and then confirmed the importance of women need, still, for the public to learn about what is as decision makers and change agents for their going on in the hospitals and the health sector. own health, and the health of their families.

Women’s Health worker, Anne Smart who has been with the group since 1999 explained, “I think there needs to be an older women’s voice in both rural, remote and regional areas.

This group in particular, focuses on making a difference in people’s lives, hearing such a diverse range of speakers, who are experts in their fields, this group contributes so much to the community as a whole and is a great support of women- for women.”

ext week, you are invited to join representatives from Orange Health Service, Charles Sturt University and local technology entrepreneurs for a presentation and panel discussion on health innovation in the Central West.

Hosted by the Regional NSW Tech and Entrepreneurship Group — a group of local professionals who are looking to foster the innovation in the Central West — the session aims to inform interested community members and maybe even inspire new entrepreneurs.

Founded twelve months ago, the Regional NSW Tech and Entrepreneurship Group have hosted a number of events covering topics such as Agtech, Learning from Failure and Smart Cities, which was part of the 2019 Orange Tech Expo.

“This event is all about innovation around health,”

said Rick. “Health being one of our biggest employers and something that affects every single one of us in the Central West. So this is an opportunity to hear from CSU Professor Bryant and also to hear from Orange Health Service and then ask questions at an open forum.”

Justine Hall wants to help people find love the old-fashioned way — in person and face to face.

In just a short time, technology and dating apps have completely changed the dating game, but not always for the better, says Justine.

“I’ve used dating apps, but found it really lonely, you are not really connecting in a normal way. I’m not saying they’re bad — I’ve met a lot of people that have found their partner via social media — it just wasn’t for me,” said Justine.

It was after being reluctantly dragged to a party last year, that Justine met her partner and she is now wanting to give other singles the opportunity to meet and talk to someone in person rather than through text on a screen.

“After meeting my partner at a party, I thought why aren’t we doing this more often? I hadn’t been to a party for ages and I just thought people don’t do that a lot anymore. But it’s good getting back to meeting people the old school way,” said Justine, who is organising an over 30s singles event at the end of September.

“It is called ‘Face 2 Face’ and I am really passionate about bringing people together instead of being online,” she said.

“I have single friends who use dating apps and not enjoying it. I just think it is nice to bring people together so you can meet someone, have a chat and connect on that level.”

“It is a very nice looking gun, if you think of guns as being pretty,” says local black powder shooter Kelvin Moss about his dream gun, the 18th Century Jager Rifle.

“It has a lot of brass hardware on it, fish scale checkering on the rear grip, it is just a very nice rifle!”

Kelvin was 16 when he first started competitive shooting as a junior, but it wasn’t until 20 years ago that he discovered his true passion — muzzle-loading, black powder firearms.

“I was doing long-range target rifle with a modern .308, but it didn’t quite grab me,” said Kelvin.

“I walked away from shooting a bit, but then in 2000 when I started

out in black powder I haven’t looked back!”

It was an unlikely route that led Kelvin to black powder shooting.

His father had joined the Lachlan Living History Group and, being short of members one day, Kelvin got roped in.

“It was by accident I found reenacting. My Dad got into it because he knew a few people doing it and I happened to know one of the other actors in the group as well. I got invited into the group and then my partner and her two sons got into it as well. So, we did it as a family and had quite a lot of fun doing that,” said Kelvin.

“So, I started out as a reenactor first.

That’s where I picked up my first muzzleloader and then I was told you could shoot target with these things and it took off!”

As the name implies, muzzle-loading firearms are loaded from the front of the barrel; loose powder first, followed by a cloth patch and round lead ball or conical projectile, then rammed into place. Depending on the particular firearm, the powder is fired by a flintlock (literally a mechanism that strikes flint on steel to throw sparks on the gunpowder) or a

percussion cap (not too dissimilar to a toy cap gun).

Today’s muzzleloading shooters use a mix of modern recreations of old firearms as well as real antiques.

“We do everything from singleshot, muzzle-loading pistols to cap and ball revolvers, and traditional rifles in flint or cap lock, smoothbore muskets using round ball or turning that musket into a shotgun by using pellets and shoot clays. We can also

shoot military class, where all the guns have to be a copy or an original of a military issue firearm,” said Kelvin, whose collection continues grow.

“I’ve bought more and more guns as I’ve gone along. For some people they might say too many, but I have a reasonable collection for an early collector or a late collector however you want to put it,” he said.

“My most favourite? It would be an Enfield 58 calibre muskatoon, it is a cavalry gun, a short carbine. I’ve won quite few championships with it — I actually won five on the trot back in 2012, 2013. It has been my go-to gun, but I love picking up all of them.”

So just what is it about muzzleloaders that gets people so obsessed.

“The smell, the noise — it is a different noise, it is a different feel of the explosion in the air, the way the gun pushes back in your shoulder,” said Kelvin.

“The comradery as well. You meet up with very interesting characters and you just have a ball at shoots you go away to. We are a very small fraternity of shooters, sometimes we call ourselves the lepers of the shooting world, but it is how it is — and we like it!”

CRITICAL CARE PARAMEDIC AT THE TOLL AMBULANCE RESCUE HELICOPTER SERVICE

hen aeromedical paramedic Nathan Croft steps into work he never knows what each day will bring or just where it will take him.

“That, I think, is also what attracts me to this job,” said Nathan. “Every day is different. At any moment our emergency phone could ring and then off we go, you never know what to expect in any one day.”

Born and raised in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, Nathan has wanted to be a paramedic for as long as he can remember. After completing high school, he went into nursing for two years, but it was always just a stepping-stone to get into the NSW Ambulance Service.

After signing up, his first posting was actually an 18-month stint in Molong. Then, 15 years ago, he returned to the Central West to work as a critical care paramedic for the Orange Aeromedical Service.

It is not just the Toll Rescue Helicopter that makes aeromedical operations different, but also the level of clinical care they can provide in an emergency. The medical team that boards the helicopter includes a specialist emergency doctor as well as a critical care paramedic like Nathan, who are trained to carry out a number of advance life-saving procedures.

“We can provide a similar level of care that a hospital emergency department can provide, but in the field,” said Nathan.

“So, as a medical team we can anaesthetise the patient, put them to sleep, we can do different types of airway procedure, even things like a surgical airway procedure where we might have to cut the neck open and even roadside surgery; we can do amputations if need be. So, it is really like bringing the ED level of care to the side of the road.”

Orange Aeromedical Service is staffed by six paramedics, five pilots and five crew who work 12-hour shifts. Doctors are assigned to the service with some working between the hospital emergency department and aeromedical operations.

While mostly the team from Orange work in the Central West, when the emergency phone rings, they could be deployed nearly anywhere in the State.

“We can be tasked to anywhere in NSW they need us to go — or

interstate if need be. Sourcing jet fuel that’s the limiting factor, but I’ve been as far west as Ivanhoe, we’ve been almost into Queensland and we’ve done a job in Victoria from Orange,” said Nathan.

The average time from getting a call to getting the medical team airborne is just seven minutes and they can be with a patient anywhere within 300 kilometres radius within an hour.

“It is amazing that we have this capability in Australia. Other parts of the world don’t have anything like this, in terms of the speed of getting this level of care to the patient,” said Nathan.

“Ours, is a huge country and the fact we are able to get across those huge distances in a short amount of time and provide that level of care is absolutely vital.”

Motor vehicle accidents are a common cause of callouts, said Nathan, along with farming accidents and recreational motorcycle riding. They are also called on to transfer trauma patients or the critically ill from small towns to a larger hospital.

“You get pretty busy at times. Last week, both my day shifts I was out all day, the entire shift. I was exhausted by the end of those shifts!” he said.

Downtime for the aeromedical team is important, said Nathan in order that they are rested and ready to respond when a call comes in. So, the base includes a recreation room, small gym and sleeping quarters.

“Once everyone has done what they need to do, they can chill out, which is important. You need to be able to sit down and rest, you can’t be on the go all the time or you would get worn out,” he said.

As the paramedic manager, Nathan’s downtime is often filled with paperwork.

“For me the average day can be often quite busy; I’m either out flying on critical missions looking after patients or I’m doing admin things as a manager,” said Nathan.

“You have to be able to switch between the two roles in an instant, at any moment our emergency phone could ring and then off we go.”

Paramedic’s jobs involve seeing people at the worse time of their lives; it’s certainly not a role for everyone.

But for Nathan, it is a calling.

“I guess I really like helping people; it’s is my nature,” he said. “And I get a lot of enjoyment out of helping people.”

AUSTRALIA POST COMMIT TO THE BUSH

Australia Post CEO Christine Holgate joined me in Canberra on Tuesday

I welcomed the head of Australia Post, Christine Holgate, to my office in Canberra last week. I was able to discuss with her how I think Australia Post can improve its services to regional Australia.

This is particularly the case with more localised sorting facilities and faster delivery times to regional addresses.

Christine assured me Australia Post is a strong supporter of people in the bush, but I was quick to point out the need to continue its support for the retention of country post offices.

Encouragingly, Christine seemed to have a clear understanding of the importance of post offices to regional communities and she vowed to continue to support regional Australia’s postal needs.

This is great news for the Calare electorate and regional Australia.

WORKS ON long-awaited upgrades to Blayney’s CentrePoint Sport and Leisure Centre have commenced.

I got a first-hand look at the project works worth $4.23 million on Monday at the invitation of Blayney Shire Council staff and joined Deputy Mayor Cr David Kingham to inspect the demolition work which is underway.

The Coalition Government has contributed $1.9 million to the renovation ensuring key features of the project include a renovation of toilets and change rooms, a new pre/post shower area and raising the water level of all three pools

The great news is that this Centre’s renovation will also ensure more community members can enjoy access to the facility year-round. We all know just how cold our region can get during the winter months and it’s often difficult for parents to find activities for their kids during winter.

SHOOTERS PARTY U.S. STYLE GUN LAWS DON’T MAKE OUR COMMUNITIES SAFER I fully support the rights of farmers, recreational and sporting shooters to use guns under the system we currently have in place. I have no issue with that and they should not be demonised for their use of firearms.

We all love it when the Aussies bag shooting gold at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. Well those champions come from our gun and shooting clubs.

And a lot of politically correct city people simply don’t understand the need for firearms on farms or exactly how they’re used by people on the land.

However I want to say something about the gun laws they have in America.

There is much to admire about America but one thing I don’t understand is their inability to stop the shocking massacres of their own citizens in their schools, cinemas, shopping centres and music concerts.

Every time I hear of another mass shooting in America I shake my head. This is the country that put a man on the moon.

The issue is of course the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution which provides for the “right of the people to keep and bear arms”.

In Australia, no such provision exists in the Constitution and after the Port Arthur massacre that killed 35 people and injured 23, the National Firearms Agreement came into existence in 1996 with the aim of preventing any similar atrocities.

SUPPORTING A GREAT CAUSE Shooters Party Leader Robert Borsak

The Agreement has been successful in greatly reducing the instances of firearm deaths. Australia’s murder rate is also a fraction of America’s. There hasn’t been a mass shooting in Australia since Port Arthur but in the 18 years leading up to it there were 12 others.

The Shooters Party tried to undermine the National Firearms Agreement by seeking to pass laws in the New South Wales Parliament which would introduce “personal and property protection in the home” as a reason to own a gun.

The provision is similar to the US Second Amendment and would essentially allow anyone in NSW to own a firearm if they state that the reason is personal and property protection.

The Shooters’ national policy even states they want to “review” the Federal Firearms Agreement. That’s code for winding it back.

I don’t support US-style gun laws where virtually anyone has the right to carry a firearm. Let’s face it, there are some people who shouldn’t be let anywhere near a gun.

Most people could think of someone in that category.

The Shooters Party needs to give an explanation as to why they want to dismantle the National Firearms Agreement and how they think giving virtually everyone the right to a gun makes our communities safer.

Dr Jennifer Geraghty GP and Senior Lecturer in Community Medicine Dr Jenny Geraghty has been a GP in Dubbo for almost 30 years. She grew up in Newcastle and studied medicine at the University of Sydney. Following graduation, she worked in Sydney and Newcastle, while also spending time living and working in the UK. In addition to general practice, Jenny very much enjoys her position as Senior Lecturer at Sydney University’s School of Rural Health. The transition towards having a complete medical degree available in Dubbo from 2021 is an exciting opportunity for the region, to work together to educate the next generation of young doctors.

This time last year, Chris Brown was spending his days in front of a computer or presenting PowerPoints to clients in his Brisbane office.

But nine months ago, he traded in the suit and tie and corporate life, for long days in the kitchen at one of the most scenic dining destinations in Orange.

And he hasn’t looked back!

“I was sort of stuck in the corporate life and hating it — I was basically sitting in front of the laptop the whole time,” said Chris, a radiographer by training who moved onto selling X-Ray equipment and for the past eight years had been a product specialist for General Electric.

It was last October, returning to Orange for his 30-year school reunion that Chris rekindled a relationship with former classmate Julse Kropp.

Two month later, he’d quit his job in Brisbane, moved back to Orange and partnered with Julse to reopen the Lakeshore Café.

“This place and Julse brought me back,” said Chris. “We’d started a relationship and I’d always wanted an opportunity to run a little business, so all the stars aligned, and we won the tender for this place, so I quit my job at GE and started doing this.”

While Chris had little previous experience in hospitality, Julse has had cafes in Orange for the past 15 years and working together, the Lakeshore Café is building a reputation for great food and even better service.

For Chris, the move to the kitchen has been good

one and he is relishing life out of the office.

“It’s hard work, but I’m still smiling,” he said. “I’m working long hours and physically it has been tough, but the body’s adapting and mentally it has been so much better. I get to walk across the dam wall at the lake to get to work every morning and to go home again, so it is awesome!”

When Chris and Julse took on the Lakeshore Café they decided that to really serve the community, they need to set consistent opening hours.

The Lakeshore café is now open seven days a week, 7am-5pm in the winter months and 6am to 7pm in the Summer.

“That was the feedback we got about this place that there were limited hours and people never knew when it was open so that’s why we decided just to open all the time and flip that reputation around,” said Chris.

“So whenever the park is open, we’re open.”

The menu too has been designed to cater to everyone visiting Lake Canobolas.

“If you are a vegetarian; we have options for you.

If you are a fitness freak; we have options for you.

If you are a burger-with-the-lot-and-large-chips

sort of person, we have that option for you as well — so a lot of variation in the menu,” said Chris.

“We are also family friendly: Mum, dad and the three kids can come out here and have lunch for a reasonable price… Julse and I just want to punch out good quality food at a good price in a nice relaxed atmosphere that is all we are trying to do.”

And the response has been great, said Chris, with crowds of people heading out to the Lakeshore Café to sample their all-day breakfast menu, burgers, fresh sandwiches or Chris’ very own home-made treats.

“I do a lot of baking: scones, banana bread, sticky date pudding, cheesecake, choc chip biscuits and salted caramel brownies. I do all that myself and they’ve been popular!” he said.

And Chris and Julse have plenty of ideas for the future of the Lakeshore Café.

“But right at this moment, our immediate goal is to just keep doing what we are doing — selling good food!”

It seems they change their minds every year about what’s good or not good for us.

If you’re over 50, then just like you, as a kid I left the house after breakfast and made it back by dinner time. Bare feet, only one lot of sunscreen applied for the day (remember the blue liquid called ‘Blockout’?), no bike helmet, no money in pocket, no access to video games, no means of communication with home. We drank out of the creek if we were thirsty, and climbed higher in the trees than Bear Grylls. 9 hours of the outdoors and fresh air. But apparently, doing all that is very bad for you now.

Last week I mentioned coffee and wine in regard to not being able to tell the difference between some options. This time I’m mentioning them because, amongst many other things, it seems there’s a ‘new’ university study that comes out each year contradicting the previous one. We’re told in one study “It’s Ok to have a glass of wine a day … it’s actually quite good for you”.

The same kind-of survey will come out for coffee, chocolate, running long distances, lifting weights, using your computer for long periods, spraying chemicals … I could go on. Then, we’ll get a contradicting research project by the next bunch of PhD students that tells us to keep away from wine, coffee, carbs, vitamins in bottles, red meat, sleeping longer than 7 hours, sleeping shorter than 7 hours, flu shots, aaaarrrrgggghhh! Make up your mind people. You’d think that the research was just being done to keep someone in a job.

There’s a song from American 80s singer Joe Jackson that has the catchline “ Everything gives you cancer, everything gives you cancer ”. Sometimes it feels that way. The anti-vaxers will tell you that there’s more harm than good to come from getting a jab to keep away the deadly viruses. Like eating an apple-a-day, the generation above

me would religiously take their ‘Bex’ powders to ward off the nasties. Burning the sausages black used to be considered a level of acceptable cooking. A recent study to scare us shows the potential for Glyphosate to be a carcinogen – who knows.

They’ve been changing their minds about things for so long that I shouldn’t have been surprised at the latest ‘University Study’ telling of yet another thing that had been a staple, but that’s now no good for us, or at least no good for Man’s Best Friend. A lady came on one of those morning shows to tell us that giving your dog a bone is probably not the best thing for him or her.

Bones. WHAT? Now, I’ve only owned two pooches over the past 25 years (they made it to age 12 and 13) so I don’t think I’ve done much wrong over two and a half decades of feeding them bones. Everybody knows not to give them cooked bones, but now they’re saying our doggo’s are going to break their teeth or choke from chewing on bones.

Did you watch the six episode TV series on Chernobyl yet? Scary, but awesome.

Don’t quote me, but I’m sure they said it’d be about a gazillion years (you understand half-life of uranium, yes?) before it’s safe to go back and live there. Now they’re taking tours of the site … so long as you’re outta there within an hour it’ll be ‘safe’. I think I’ll stick to Disneyland or my secret spot up at Cape Tribulation to spend my hard-earned on a holiday tour.

I think I’m going to ignore every survey that comes out. What will they be telling us next … that Turkish Delight, Beer and Meat Pies are bad for us?

BROTHERS 4 RECOVERY

SPRINGHILL GOLDEN OLDIES RUGBY UNION I had a great time at the Springhill Recreation Ground last month, where I participated in the Springhill Golden Oldies Wooducks Rugby Union match. It was good to be involved in this community spirited game which raised money for Give Me 5 for Kids.

Recently I met up with Chris Grevsmuhl (left) and Steve Morris (right) of the Brothers 4 Recovery - Drug, Alcohol & Mental Health Charity, which was borne from a noticeable gap in the health service surrounding issues such as mental health, suicide prevention, drug and alcohol addiction and more.

The charity is based from Orange but provides workshops and forums throughout NSW, QLD, VIC and ACT. Check them out on Facebook: Brothers 4 Recovery.

Well done to the team for this very worthwhile initiative.

MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS Last week the NSW Minister for Energy and Environment, Matt Kean MP, kindly responded to my invitation to visit Orange so that we could discuss the Mount Canobolas Mountain Bike project. While he was here, I took the Minister for a tour of the mountain, before meeting with stakeholders from both the Cabonne Shire and Orange City Councils at the summit.

OZ TO JOIN WOMEN RIDERS WORLD RELAY

ore often than not we seem to be so caught up in daily events that we can honestly say that we haven’t ever given thought to a time when we may be unable or unwilling to manage our own financial and/or personal and health affairs.

And yet, planning ahead is something that we really should give consideration to – and not just when we are “seniors”!

Thinking about situations where we may be unwilling or unable to manage our own affairs should, be something we engage in when we turn 18 years of age. After all, we register to vote then, why not think about who could manage our finances in certain situations. For example, what if we were backpacking in a remote region on the other side of the world, or suddenly incapacitated by accident or illness, who could take care of any unexpected financial issues for us? The short answer is “No-one” unless we have appointed someone as our Attorney, through either a General or Enduring Power of Attorney. Planning ahead really isn’t just for elderly people moving into aged care!

All too often we see cases of elderly or vulnerable people suffering from neglect or without proper access to their finances.

The Women Riders World Relay was sparked by a UK-based motorcyclist Haley Bell, who felt women just weren’t being properly catered to by the motorcycle industry.

“Going into motorcycle stores and seeing a lack of choice, combined with stereotypical pink and being told ‘there just isn’t the market for women’, highlighted to me just one small element of a much bigger picture around women in motorsports… Our aim is to wow the industry into realising the global market for women in motorsports and to inspire women worldwide,” said Ms Bell in a statement on the Women Riders World Relay Facebook page that has garnered the support of thousands of women all over the world.

The relay began in Scotland and will finish in the United Arab Emirates in December. Already, hundreds of ‘guardians’ — women who have signed up to deliver the baton on their chosen leg — have carried it through the United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, Lithuania, Romania, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. It will make its way through Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore Indonesia, and then into Perth later this month.

Orange Local Orranette McGuire has signed up to be a guardian of the baton for four legs of its journey later this month; riding from Wagga Wagga to Cowra, Cowra to Dubbo, Dubbo to Tamworth and Tamworth to Glen Innes.

The Central West Libraries Staff have organised another six seminars, which are to be held in Molong, Manildra, Blayney, Orange, Canowindra and Cowra during August. Details of the dates, times and venues for the remaining seminars can be found by contacting the local libraries.

The seminars are in partnership with Legal Aid NSW, Orange office. A solicitor from Legal Aid NSW is present at each of the seminars to give legal advice on a range of civil matters, including confidential advice to assist those experiencing or at risk of elder abuse. It is part of a range of measures Legal Aid NSW is implementing to increase access to Legal Aid NSW assistance for victims of elder financial abuse. Legal Aid NSW and Sue Field are planning a further three seminars in September and these will be held in Dubbo, Warren and Walgett.

Sue Field, an Adjunct Associate Professor at Charles Sturt University and a Lead Investigator with the Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre (CDPC) previously undertook a research project which examined the Policies and Practices of Financial Institutions relating to substitute decision making instruments (that is, powers of attorney) and also the experiences of the people appointed as an attorney. As a result of the project, which was funded through the CDPC, ten community seminars – on the topic of powers of attorney – were held, by Sue, in metropolitan and regional New South Wales. The seminars were so successful that further funding has been received from the CDPC to enable Sue to conduct another ten seminars, this time in the Central West.

“It’s women bike riders getting together, handing a baton from hand to hand, bike to bike all the way around the world — It’s exciting!,” said Orranette, better known as ‘Oz’.

Oz has been riding motorcycles since she was a child and stumbled across the relay thanks to a few motorcycle Facebook groups in which she’s a member.

She said it has been inspirational to follow the journey being undertaken by women riders around the world, which is why she just had to take part.

“It’s a buzz to be able to see this on Facebook. You are following it daily, and you’re seeing how it impacts women in their daily life as well,” said Oz. “For a lot of women, especially through places like Indonesia, Cambodia, regions of Bangladesh and Russia… for women to get on motorbikes and be able to ride through the country together is a very empowering thing for them as individuals and for their Community to see. It literally is lifting women up, it’s huge.”

On the Dubbo to Tamworth Leg, Oz will be joined by more than 60 other women riders.

“For me it’s also that opportunity to actually ride with a large group of women! I mean, you just don’t get to ride with women in those sorts of numbers —that’s pretty cool!” said Oz. “The motorsport industry needs to understand that women riders are out there and and the numbers are growing!”

Oz will join the relay in Wagga Wagga for its journey through to Cowra and Dubbo on 31 August.

The Orange and District Early Education Program Inc.(ODEEP) run MyTIme in the Orange region. It’s a place for you to unwind and talk about your experiences.

It’s a world away from appointments and therapy. It’s support for you.

MyTime members come from different backgrounds and their children have different abilities and needs. Through talking about their experiences, carers share their varied ways of reacting to and coping with their challenges.

Members support each other and build relationships, which can lead to an increased sense of belonging and wellbeing.

Why My Time?

MyTime is free MyTime groups are free to join, and being a part of MyTime does not affect your NDIS funding.

It’s support for you Meet other parents and family carers of children with disabilities. MyTime is a place to socialise, to discuss, to get information, and to support and be supported by other carers.

Professional guidance All MyTime groups have a trained facilitator, who helps group members get to know each other and learn more about local resources and support services.

You can bring your children You can bring your children to MyTime. While you unwind, children are kept engaged nearby by MyTime play helpers.

MyTime groups are not restricted to parents of children with particular additional needs – there are not specific MyTime groups for autism spectrum disorder or cerebral palsy, for example. All groups are open to all parents and carers. In some circumstances, you may be eligible to attend MyTime even if your child doesn’t have a diagnosis.

MyTime groups are a supportive space for parents to feel understood and share ideas about managing a range of situations. A My Time group is more than a playgroup, it’s a place where parents can meet others in similar situations. MyTime members also have access to information and resources through the group facilitator. Members get to plan the group sessions around their specific needs as carers.

Some months back Orange City Life changed the title on our Real Estate supplement from Your Place to Orange Property Market (OPM). We did this for a number of reasons but one of the bigger reasons was to pave the way for future growth, mainly to develop our own local real estate website and then work towards becoming the Number 1 source for buyers and sellers in not just Orange but the local region. Selling your home yourself Some people try to save on fees by opting to sell their home without an agent. A good agent offers much more than may be obvious at first glance.

Industry knowledge and local market history are just two things that could save you money if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Choosing the wrong real estate agent Experience is the key to most pursuits so choosing an agent with a good reputation and good name should be a priority. For example, a good agent will know how to price your home right, marketing it appropriately and know which buyers are genuine.

Over-valuing your home Putting your home on the market at the right price will give you the best chance of an early sale. A good agent will help

you determine the right price for the current market. Over-pricing your home will often prevent potential buyers from even looking in the first place.

Not presenting your home in a good light Presentation matters. Buyers who don’t ensure their home is neat and tidy, free from clutter etc. will put some buyers off. Make sure your home looks the goods, especially when it’s open for inspection.

Not dealing with repairs or maintenance Selling a house with basic or obvious repairs or maintenance issues unattended to will also turn some buyers off. Talk to your agent about any such issues to determine what needs to be dealt with to help your home sell quickly.

Over doing repairs and maintenance Whereas repairs and maintenance issues may need to be dealt with, another mistake can be to overdo it.

It makes good sense to spend money on repairs if the gain in the sale price justifies it, but not if the cost of repairs

GOOD MARKETING YIELDS GOODS RESULTS! The recent sale of five Nashdale properties was heavily advertised in Orange City Life in the lead up to the auction on 24 July.

Selling agent Michael Wright from Peter Fisher Orange said the extra advertising with Orange City Life yield good results, with significant interest from local buyers.

“We advertise fairly extensively,” said Michael. “Here, we used Orange City life pretty well and took an extra full page, which got a very good response form the market locally, we had some very strong local buyers.

“Because it was such a comprehensive campaign, we actually have clients left over that are looking for similar sort of properties to that we auctioned,” said Michael. “If anyone is thinking should we sell or should we wait until spring? the answer is no. We have qualified buyers who are ready to buy!

So, if you are interested, we would certainly love to hear from you.”

Potential buyers may want to see your home at odd times, you may get a variety of offers well below what you’re asking and so on, so be prepared to give thought to each curly one as it comes up. ll signs are pointing to another strong spring for real estate sales in Orange, says local agent Michael Wright.

Michael, an experienced Residential and Rural Specialist Agent with Peter Fisher Orange, said the recent auction of five premium Nashdale properties for $8.15 million shows just how healthy the Orange Market is at the moment.

“The beauty of it was there hasn’t been too many properties like this that have gone up for sale in the last little while, so it has been a litmus test for the market. I think it has proved, as everyone seems to be saying, just how strong it is,” said Michael.

“I’m not sure if it is a record, but we were involved in “The Bridge” sale a couple of years ago and we got $7.8 million for that — this being $8.15 million… I think it would certainly give the record a pretty fair nudge.”

The five properties, located on Nancarrow Lane and Canobolas Road, were purchased by a single local buyer, but Michael said they had a lot of interest both locally and from buyers all

We also got very good enquiry from out of town and even interstate — from Victoria and Queensland — and strong enquiry from Sydney as well,” said Michael.

market in Orange, but sales have been strong these past few months, said Michael.

“The weekend after the election we sold three properties, with offers on a fourth and that activity level has pretty much continued,” he said.

“We continue to have very good general inquiry and I think all signs are pointing to strong Spring, especially with the drop in interest rates, and now we are hearing that the Sydney market is starting to turn around.

“In Orange, there continues to be good growth in house prices and that is over most sections of the market from lower price to the higher price properties, so there is probably not a better time to take the plunge and get in.”

And you only have to look around at all the construction taking in place in Orange to know the future is bright, said Michael.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen three high-rise cranes in Orange before, as we have the last few months… and driving around town you are seeing motels with no vacancy signs up as well so I think that says a lot for our future and a lot for the Orange lifestyle.”

On Friday July 26th a group of people gathered at the Orange Regional Museum to enjoy the floor talk for the current exhibition. The Exhibition “All in a Day’s Work” show cases the images from the Central Western Daily Negative Collection.

It focuses on the working lives of Orange locals between 1955 and 1974. During the floor talk the curator Liz Edwards provided an insight into process of curating the exhibition and highlighting many of the fantastic photographs displayed which give a glimpse in the life in past years. The “All in a Day’s Work” exhibition remains on show until the October 13th.

festival Photos by EdithMay Gowing As part of the Orange Winter Fire Festival the Readers and Writers festival was held at the Canobolas Hotel.

Approximately 60 people enjoyed the presentations by 5 guest speakers, including the announcement and presentation of the Banjo Paterson Writing Awards. There had been entries submitted from across the country, including 121 short stories, 91 Poems and 19 stories from children. Mayor Red Kid presented the prizes to the winners that were present.

First year of the Millthorpe Fire Festival in 2018 was a sodden, soggy success; but last Friday’s second-impression was a fine-weather triumph!

Millthorpe kicked-off the Orange Winter Fire Festival with more than 4000 revellers cramming into the village’s main Pym Street in crystal-clear winter weather.

The chilly night markets saw attendees crowded around the drumfires toasting marshmallows and enjoying local wines; craftbrewed beers; and a range of food from classic Australian home-made pies and sausage rolls to unique Vietnamese cuisine.

The fireworks display on the Glenorie Road common lit-up the night sky over Pym Street to the delight of the hundreds of children attending.

“It was fantastic,” President of Millthorpe Village Committee, Sam Yeates said. “We had a lot of people from Orange, Bathurst, the Mountains and even from Sydney attending.

“Our second annual Orange Winter Fire Festival is celebrating our regional way of life; sitting around the fire staring at the stars and sharing the warmth of our communities,” Communications and Sales Manager Emily Mann explained.

Between Nature and Sin A new exhibition of painting, photography and film by leading Australia artist David Griggs is now on display at the Orange Regional Gallery.

The exhibition, Between Nature and Sin features a decade of past work, and the premiere of Cowboy Country, David Griggs’ first feature film.

Griggs’ work, predominantly portraiture, focuses on the human condition; drawing on political imagery, underground media, local histories and personal experience.

Famous for his bold approach, Griggs exposes the raw underbelly of society.

For the last 10 years he has resided in the Philippines and has created a significant body of work that reveals the social hierarchies and underground culture of his adopted home.

Between Nature and Sin was first presented at Campbelltown Arts Centre in 2017 and has toured nationally, visiting nine metropolitan and regional centres in New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Queensland and Victoria from 2018 to 2019.

The exhibition, like all at the Orange Regional Gallery is free to enter and will be on display until 29 September, 2019. It opens in conjunction with Raw Language: Esotericisim in Outsider Art (3 August – 8 September) and Curtain Call: Andrew Antoniou (3 August 22 September).

INDEPENDENT COUNTRY STARS TO SHINE IN HOMEGROWN SHOWCASE Justin Landers is hoping his Country Radio Stars Showcase will be just the first of many for Orange.

Justin, or “Ned” as he is more often called, is passionate about country music and he has brought together four of his talented friends to show Orange the best of the independent country music scene.

Justin has been performing throughout the Central West for nearly two decades and knows just how difficult it can be to get recognised as an independent artist, which is why decided to put the showcase together.

“A mate of mine put a small proposal to me which I just then blew into a bigger idea,” said Justin.

“So, I invited four good friends along — and these artists have all helped me in

some way or another since my beginnings in country music, whether that be providing advice or actually performing on my debut album — so I thought let’s bring these guys together and bring them to Orange and we’ll hold a showcase!”

Sharing the stage with Justin at the Country Radio Stars Showcase will be the very talented Michelle Walker (Tully Qld), gifted multi-instrumentalist Lance Birrell (Dubbo NSW), Good Morning Country Radio presenter and renowned balladeer Kylie Adams-Collier (Kenthurst NSW) and country/folk songstress Vanessa Delaine (Wodonga VIC).

“All of these artists have charted in the radio charts around Australia at various levels and they’ll all be showing off their original music as well as their favourite

artists — there’ll be something for everyone,” said Justin.

“We’ve sold a lot of tickets already, so people need to get in pretty quick because they may miss out. At $15 it’s pretty cheap, and it is an awesome line-up — it’s going to be a good show!”

And if Justin has his way, it won’t be the last for Orange.

“That’s the plan. If this show does well, I hope to do maybe two of these a year with different artists from all over Australia, it might grow into a festival! But this is the first one, so we’ll start at the beginning and see how it goes from there.”

The Country Radio Stars Showcase will be held in the Auditorium of the Orange City Bowling Club on Saturday 17t August 2019 at 8pm.

Garden Guru Visits Orange

In excess of one hundred keen gardeners filled the Coral Sea Room at the Ex-Servces Club last week to hear former host of ‘Gardening Australia’, Stephen Ryan present two entertaining talks on ‘Weird and Wacky Plants’ and ‘Plants of Madagascar’.

Stephen who lives and works in Mt Macedon was in Orange for three days as a guest of Orange Garden Club.

Apart from operating his own nursery in Victoria,’ Dicksonia Rare Plants’, Stephen lectures and holds seminars both in Australia and overseas and travels extensively all over the world with his tour groups looking at gardens in their natural habitats.

During his time in Orange Stephen viewed a number of local gardens while also spending time in Cook Park, the Botanic Gardens and a day at Mayfield Gardens in Oberon. Members of the committee entertained Stephen on his final evening in Orange with a dinner party at the home of Vice President Margaret Nancarrow and her husband Roger.

There was quite a drama in Summer Street one evening in September 1956 when ambulance officers demonstrated first aid to the public. Firemen first ‘rescued’ a victim from the roof of a building, before ambulance officers took over and ‘resuscitated’ the man, to the delight of a huge crowd of people of all ages.

THUMBS DOWN to the woman driving the hatchback which had ‘Sparkling Designs’ printed on the back of it. An elderly couple had pulled over and indicated to reverse parallel park in Summer street at lunch time, and the woman looked to stop behind them to allow him to park, before quickly deciding to drive into the spot as he has started to reverse. The poor old man had to quickly break and drive to find another park, and on top of that, she also parked in the middle of what could have been two spots. As the woman and her passengers exited the car they were laughing and bragging about how funny they were and how silly the old man looked. I could not believe how rude and disrespectful they were to A. steal an old man’s car spot as he was reversing into it, but to B. then laugh about it and bag him out for no apparent reason.

In response to the THUMBS DOWN in OCL 25/7 about shops opening hours. If only people took

the two minutes it took to complain and put in into wondering why? Small businesses in Orange can’t even afford to pay staff in most cases so we work 6 days a week on our own, handling the face-to-face as well as all that goes into owning a business outside those ‘’business hours’’. We are dealing with the increase of theft, knowing we have no recourse against people who take what we had worked hard for, as you can’t confront them in most cases unless you want to risk your personal safety. We deal with these cold winter days when we may not make enough money to pay rent. Most of us are open all day, six days a week, where are the shoppers on those days? You can be sure the complainers are the ones coming past at 4pm on a Sunday and wondering why they can’t ‘’browse’’ in a shop. We can’t afford it. May I also say, we have tried everything this person has suggested for 12 months, longer opening hours, opening Sundays therefore working 7 days a week myself and nothing has worked. We are all now in survival mode.

BIG THUMBS DOWN to the person who gave Orange Police a thumbs down in regards to Bathurst Road. I don’t think the people who live on Bathurst Road are any different to the rest of the Orange population. Maybe the Police could or should concentrate on the crime in the area where crime is out of sight, out of mind and hidden and blended sub-divisions.

Word of Mouth invited visiting young French wine maker Sebastien Fossier to make this wine with them and gave him a free hand to Title do whatever he wanted. The resulting wine is full bodied and textural from additional lees contact. The aroma is an interesting mix of white peach with a slight tropical fruit note, nougat and a hint of honey and finishes with a lovely citrusy acid.

Word of Mouth vineyard and cellar door is situated 1 K high above sea level.

Owners Peter and Deb pride themselves on a minimum intervention approach to their viticulture and wine-making, meaning that they don’t use herbicides, insecticides or fining agents. The fruit is hand-picked and sorted, and the wine making is pursued with a view to allowing the fruit express where and how it was grown.
