When you live in Orange it’s really hard not to talk about the weather.

Last week we went from glorious spring sun to the depths of winter in the space of a few days, yet again! I don’t want to get into the Climate Change debate but weather like we’ve had certainly keeps the discussion alive.

Our 12th Birthday passed quietly last week but I do need to thank those who took the time to pass on their good wishes to myself and the team, especially the family who dropped in with a beautiful box of chocolates and a card with some lovely words. Encouragement of any sort never goes astray, and we can learn from those who practice spreading it. Let’s all make an effort to encourage someone in some way today.

The drought and the current business environment are causing a lot of farmers and business owners to have many sleepless nights. It’s for these reasons that it’s so important for us to support those who matter to us, and our local business owners must surely come under that heading. Many of these are just normal working people trying to make ends meet and often under very difficult circumstances. They are not all rich business owners like many people seem to think. In this issue of Orange City Life, we feature several local businesses in a slightly different way. It’s part of a special Local is Best feature we’ve put together to further support our Put Orange First Community Project this year. I hope you enjoy the feature and don’t miss the real message that we’re trying to convey, and that is how important it is to shop at and support local businesses, even when it may seem easier or more convenient not to. There is a lot more at stake here than may meet the eye.

Enough heavy stuff, it’s now time to get into what OC Life does best – putting a smile on your face. Hope you enjoy this week’s issue and find something inside (or several things) that make you feel good.

Maya, Keely and Bryn ST MARY’S LATEST SUPERSTARS

A lot is to be said about the talent in our youngsters, St Mary’s Primary School recently had several students display remarkable talent in their chosen sporting fields and went on to successfully represent Polding teams encompassing all dioceses in NSW. Polding is an elite level of sport in the Catholic Schools system.

I

n Touch Football, 11-year-old Keely Thornhill and 12-year-old Maya Simmons represented Polding in the PSSA Touch Football three-day Carnival held in Mudgee just weeks ago and came out of it State Champs!

This was the first time the girls had represented at Polding level, they played 14 games including the grand final, and were said to have played outstandingly coming home with a win for NSW. It wasn’t an easy feat for the girls as they had to work around playing with girls they had only just met, Maya explained, “It was hard at first but once we got to know each other it got much easier, we learnt a new move that we mostly used the whole time.”

proudly say they also scored a try at Polding level.. go girls!

Maya and Keely have played touch football for five years, so they have some experience under their belt. “We both enjoy it because it’s quick and fun to play.”

Keely added, “I felt really good about the effort we put in on the day, all the girls from our team were really nice and it was good to get to know each other and make new friends. We played with girls from Lismore, Newcastle and Maitland, just to name a few.”

“It was a really hot day,” Maya laughed, “We were pretty exhausted by the end of it.”

Keely added, From the experience, I learnt different moves that you can do that I didn’t know about and that it’s not just one certain position that does all of the moves.”

In Rugby Union 11-year-old Bryn Whittaker represented Polding in Sydney at the Western Sydney University Hawksbury Campus.

Bryn first travelled to Bathurst to make the Diocesan team, one term later he travelled to Forbes to try out for the Polding side, Bryn was picked in possible and probable’s to then be announced in the team.

Bryn explained, “I’m in Year 5 and usually everyone who gets picked is in Year 6 so I wasn’t expecting to be picked, I couldn’t really believe it, I didn’t think I would make it in, I just went down there and had fun.”

Bryn was in Sydney for the competition for a week, two days of training and a team bonding

session before being handed their jerseys, three days of Rugby Union was then played. Bryn’s team came in eighth overall, which was a fantastic achievement.

“It was great fun, I enjoyed myself a lot. If you make it into the team you know what you’re doing and it’s pretty easy to fit in with people, it was just really fun and it’s much easier when everyone has a go.”

Bryn usually plays prop and hooker, he mentioned his favourite position is hooker, “It’s a bit more important because there is only one of you on the field, with prop there are two of you.”

“Some of the people we were up against were massive, like the size of adults..” Bryn smiled,

“I think we could have done better but I’m pretty proud of where we came considering how big the other teams were and the teams that came first were Sydney teams that trained every week.”

Mr Glenn Corben said, “Just to get to the Polding level is a really big achievement in itself, we are very proud of Maya, Keely and Bryn in their amazing achievements. Not only are they noticed in the Orange community as fantastic Rugby Union and Touch Football players, but, now they able to display how great they can play to Sydney and NSW.” Congratulations to all students, what a fantastic achievement representing your school and your town with pride!

Tzzy Taylor rocks!

High School student, Matilda ‘Tzzy’ Taylor, might only be twelve years old but this keen young drummer is already making a name for herself on the world stage.

E

arlier this year, Tzzy (drummer and vocalist of local rock band Blindly Led Youth) was voted Popular Champion of the global Hit Like a Girl, drumming contest in the under 13 age group.

Now in its eight year, the contest is all about attracting attention to and supporting female percussionists the world over. The entrants are required to submit a 3-minute performance video uploaded to YouTube, a brief bio telling their drumming story and a recent photo of themselves behind their drum kit.

Tzzy’s impressive performance of the System of a Down track ‘Chop Suey’ attracted a total of 892 votes making her audition video the most popular in her age bracket.

“It was a pretty good feeling, pretty exciting!” said Tzzy, after she found out the news.

“I want to say a big thank you to Mark Welch, Sam Aliano and all of Orange for getting behind me and helping me win the most popular, and whoever voted!”

On top of a prize pack a young drummer could only dream of, Tzzy was also awarded a scholarship with global music education company The School of Rock. She has now begun weekly Skype drumming lessons with one of the teachers at the School of Rock in Sutherland and will be joining other students there for the school’s ‘Sounds of Seattle Show’ on December 14.

“I have a gig in December and every now and then I will travel down to the School of Rock and do group rehearsals. It’s really cool meeting new musicians that push me, it is just really cool,” said Tzzy.

But that wasn’t the only good news, Matilda’s drumming style also caught the eye of “Hit Like a Girl” executive director and owner of TRX cymbal company, David Levine, which resulted in a sponsorship offer.

Local tennis players will get their chance to play with and against former Aussie pro tennis player and television personality Sam Groth.

This Friday at the Orange Indoor Tennis Centre, Sam will join ten teams from around the Central West for a friendly Fast4 round robin tournament.

Teams will each get two opportunities to ‘sub in’ Sam to their team for that crucial point. With a blistering recorded serve speed of 263 kilometres per hour, we’re not sure we want to be the one facing Sam! The tournament kicks off at 6.30pm, but Sam will be on hand for Q&A session from 6pm. There will also be plenty of opportunities to snap a photo with Sam or grab his autograph.

Claire’s big achievement

...It’s just my love; it allows me to express who I am. When I’m dancing, I feel that I can truly express myself....

Discovering a love of dance almost as soon as she could walk; Claire Menzies has never looked back.

From what began as just a recreational activity, has become Claire’s passion and dream.

Claire has been dancing since the age of three and began solo competition at the age of eight. She studies a variety of styles of dance including jazz, musical theatre, modern, contemporary but it is ballet that she loves the most.

Claire’s passion for the beauty of ballet is the drive that motivates her: “It’s just my love; it allows me to express who I am. When I’m dancing, I feel that I am truly myself,” she enthused.

“It’s the driving passion that keeps me motivated.”

Claire’s unique drive and talent were recently recognised with her being the first Orange dancer in recent times to

win the Betty Kiernan Memorial Ballet Scholarship at the Orange Eisteddfod.

After completing a master ballet class with the adjudicator, Claire was selected amongst 25 other dancers to be one of 7 finalists to compete in the dance off for the scholarship on Sunday night.

Claire was thrilled simply to be in the dance off against such accomplished competition: “To think that I was competing against such strong, talented dancers was an honour in itself,” she remembered.

But, once again she was confident that she had put her best foot forward.

“I just felt privileged to be one of the finalists and I performed my dances with enthusiasm and enjoyment.”

The $2000 scholarship sponsored

by Newcrest Mining and Orange Eisteddfod, will go towards any future dance tuition of Claire’s choosing.

Claire’s efforts were more noteworthy as she was competing against dancers most of whom are already training at a full time level whereas Claire only trains 10 hours a week, after school and on the weekend.

“It was fantastic; I had a lot of local support from the community and also my dance teachers and my parents.”

Still only 17 and a student of James Sheahan Catholic High School, Claire is looking at becoming a professional ballet dancer with one of the great ballet companies in Australia or overseas.

Claire’s goal is to audition for a full time ballet school in the near future

and ultimately aspire in her classical ballet training to achieve her dream.

The scholarship will greatly assist Claire and her training. She appreciates and thanks all who have helped her on this journey so far.

OCLife “I know this may sound like a cliché, but I made a conscious decision when I retired that I wanted to give back to the community in as many ways as I could and, clearly, volunteering was how I could achieve this — and Lifeline felt the right avenue for me.

I have always been aware that there was a need for volunteers to support organisations such as Lifeline in anyway one can and volunteering as a crisis support worker really is a unique opportunity to make a difference. Again, another cliché; but so worthwhile and ever-so relevant when you comprehend the statistics — over 2000 calls a day are made to Lifeline Australiawide. So, there is a continual need for skilled and trained volunteers to staff the call centres across Australia and be available to take any one of those calls — and that’s all day, every day.

It’s a complex coordination task rostering shifts to make sure that there are adequate numbers of trained volunteers to answer calls and to also have supervisory staff on-call to support those volunteers.

The more volunteers there are the more calls can be answered and, ultimately, support or help extended to those callers.

All the volunteers for the telephone support service go through some solid training to help work-out if the tasks ahead are right for you and if you have any personal issues that may influence your capacity to carry-out the role

It is never dull

Sue Olden is a Lifeline Crisis Support Worker and following our story on Lifeline last week, we thought we’d ask Sue more about what motivates her to do what she does. effectively. But by-and-large the training provides good grounding and knowledge of available resources and then there is ongoing supervisor support through the training and once you have qualified. You never stop learning and that in itself is rewarding as well.

The key skill is listening... to hear, rather than to listen to respond... and that is a learned skill that gets easier as you go, through your training.

All calls are confidential, and I think that is often why some people phone-in; to talk through their particular issue with someone not connected to

them or their situation and, importantly, for there to be an impartial approach without judgement.

And these are the skills we volunteers learn through the training over weeks and months — including how to handle and manage calls that may push your own buttons for whatever reason.

So, as a positive aside, the training also benefits your personal growth and strengthens your sense and capacity to be of help to the callers.

Some calls are straight-forward simply seeking information or referrals. However, other calls can be lengthy and can deal with serious and distressing matters. Many of these callers are really in a dark place and have reached-out and it is our role to ‘walk alongside’ them for the time of the call and, hopefully, see them ‘move forward’ in some way. It’s not always easy or successful but, nonetheless, a call that is answered is one more person who may be able to benefit from just talking about their problems.

If I wasn’t on the phones volunteering, that call may not be able to be answered.

I do a weekly shift of 3–4 hours and, given the nature of the work, that is taxing enough for me, but other volunteers do more shifts or longer hours. It depends on the individual and what transpires in any one week — some give you enthusiasm to take up an extra shift and other times you need to do some ‘self-care’ to recharge your batteries for the next shift.

It is never dull.”

OCLife GRANTS ON THE GO FOR GOOD LOCAL CAUSES

Orange Ex Services Club is spreading the love around.

And a range of 23 community groups and individuals are the richer for their generosity. Recipients include organisations providing bikes for the disabled, computers for disadvantaged communities, and for two young trekkers to hike the Kokoda Track.

The $123,000 worth of grants are a way for the Club to give back to the community; Club President Graham Gentles believes.

“Collectively we give back to the community about $400,000 every year,” he said. “Supporting these groups gives us great satisfaction as directors; these groups do a wonderful job. This is something that gives us pleasure to be involved in,” Mr Gentles said.

The Category I grants cover community welfare, social services, community development, employment assistance, and community health services. “They are also for projects aimed at improving the living standards of disadvantaged groups in the central west,” Mr Gentles said.

He said that the money is part of the Clubs

“More than $100 million has been given out in Clubs grants around NSW last year,” he added.

Grants this year ranged from $35,000 to

central west phone counselling service, Lifeline, down to $1000 each to communitybased low-cost accommodation provider for the elderly, Abbeyfield; to Itinerant Support Teachers to purchase assessment kits for hearing-impaired children; and to Orange 2 Mainly Music for fun music sessions for young children.

Other grants included $5000 to Legacy; $5000 to Orange Aboriginal Dance Group; $6000 for Orange sub-branch of the RSL; and more than $2000 for camping equipment for the Orange Youth Action Council.

The grants were announced at a special presentation evening at the Club with Orange Ex-Services’ Club’s Community Committee Chairperson Ros Davidson pointing-out that the Club has provided support for the local community for a number of years preceding the introduction of the Club Grants program in 1998.

“The Orange Ex-Services’ is passionate about the Orange Community and it is with much pride we offer our support to organisations such as yours,” Ms Davidson said at the presentation.

Legacy thanks you for your support

BY JONATHAN ROE Last week saw students, military personnel and other volunteers hit the streets of Orange for the annual Legacy Appeal.

For the past 71 years, Orange Legacy has been supporting the loved ones of those who died or were injured while serving their country. Today they assist some 400 women and children and rely on donations during Legacy Appeals Week to continue to do so.

“Legacy’s charter is to assist the widows of men who did not return from the war and those who died afterwards of war-related injuries,” said Orange Legacy President James Linton.

“That’s our charter and that’s what we do.”

The Wise Minds Project

A

Psychology is simple, says Tanya Moscrop Cantelo, not easy, but simple.

clinical psychologist, former teacher and mother of two, Tanya has launched a new project here in Orange that aims to empower children with simple strategies to better deal with the stresses of life.

As part of her new venture, the Wise Minds Project, Tanya will be facilitating a series of workshops aimed at giving kids and their families evidence-based psychology skills that build resilience, develop positive thinking and will benefit them well into adulthood.

“I’m really hopeful and passionate about it. I’ve been working in private practice for over a decade with children, adolescents and families and I find there have been rising numbers of referrals,” said Tanya.

“I’m seeing a rising clinical need, waiting lists are long and so I had this idea that kids don’t need to wait until they are presenting with anxiety or depression or overwhelmed emotions. I realised that all kids can benefit from doing similar cognitive thinking skills and behavioural strategies.”

Tanya has seen just how effective these skills can be in her own children.

“I use them all day to day. I challenge my own thinking or say things out loud as a matter of course, but then I’ll hear my eldest

daughter say something calming or use positive thinking skills with her brother and realised these kids can do it, we just need to teach it to them,” she said.

“I’m really hopeful that if we can put these evidence-based, resilience building strategies into a proactive preventative space then we can see more happy kids and happy households.”

Taking the first steps into this new venture, Tanya will be running two workshops in the October school holidays period for primary aged children — an area she has seen a real need.

“The younger you start with these positive thinking skills, then, like anything with kids, it becomes part of their routine and the way they see the world,” she said.

“Friendships, starting school, changing schools, social media, building empathy and kindness, bullying — there are all these issues that children and adolescents are dealing with and parents are trying to deal with, so I’m hopeful I can help all of the above with some evidence-based strategies in positive thinking, in building empathy, building self-awareness around your own emotions, how to regulate emotions, how to effectively communicate behaviour, expected behaviours, why other people might react in certain ways… there are just so many cognitive and behavioural skills that kids could benefit from.”

While the Wise Minds Project workshop will obviously be effective for children presenting as anxious or with low mood, it is really

those kids who might not have had contact with a psychologist before that Tanya is keen to target.

“It’s also a place for kids to come in their holidays and meet other children and put into place friendship skills, empathy roleplaying, building confidence, we’ll look at lots of different areas,” said Tanya who is hoping to grow the Wise Minds Project workshops into a series covering different themes.

Group numbers are limited to a maximum of 20, although if the interest is there, Tanya may add extra workshop dates.

“After these workshops kids are going to walk away with skills that they are going to remember and use day-to-day,” said Tanya.

“I’m always saying to clients that the strategies that I teach kids, adults, are skills people will have for life that are going to set them up for life to deal with peers, teachers, employment — just day-today stresses.

“I think sometimes people think strategies that are powerful must be very difficult, they must be really complex, but they are not; they are really simple. It is just about learning them and putting thing into practice and having people to support you to put those into practice and they are just so far reaching. I’m excited about it!”

Tanya will be running two workshops this school holidays: Wise Minds (8-12 years girls) on 3 October, and Wise Minds (8-12 years boys) on 10 October. Both workshops will take place at CWA Hall in Robertson Park, 10am to 3pm. Cost is $165.

Mountain bikers set to battle it out in the

Back Yamma

BY JONATHAN ROE Up to 200 competitors are preparing to battle it out this Sunday at the Orange Mountain Bike Club’s much loved and fiercely contested Back Yamma Cross Country MTB Race.

Held on a 25 kilometre loop in the Back Yamma State Forest, located between Eugowra and Parkes, the renowned ‘fast and flat-ish’ mountain bike race sees racers of all ages and abilities take on distances ranging from 25 to 100 kilometres and includes all the best features of previous Back Yamma events.

For those braving the 100 kilometre option, the race kicks off from 7.30am, Sunday. It is sure to be a day of tough competition with all riders vying to be first across the line.

Competitor numbers for this year’s race are looking very strong, said Orange Mountain Bike Club President Jack Rahilly, who said there was a great field of riders across all distance options.

“The Club is very pleased to have the support of several local Orange businesses, and looks forward to awarding prizes to the fastest racers in each category,” said Mr Rahilly.

Camping is available on-site for free on the Saturday night, with rumours that the notorious Bigfoot will make an appearance again this year.

Registration can be made up until Saturday night online or in person on the day, but numbers are capped at 200 competitors.

A canteen will be operating on the day.

WORKING ON LOCAL WATER NEEDS

Last week, I welcomed representatives of Central Tablelands Water to the Orange office to discuss crucial local water projects in the region.

Top of the list were discussions about Lake Rowlands and opportunities to capture more water through a new dam wall and integrate it with other water storage facilities across the region.

The Australian Government’s drought relief effort now stands at $7.2 billion – the largest in our nation’s history.

Some key measures include: The Farm Household Allowance – putting food in the table and diesel in the ute Major investments in vital mental health services and support The $5 billion Future Drought Fund to help farmers deal with this drought and prepare for future ones $1 million to local councils in drought affected areas for community projects Concessional loans to support farmers and communities through Orange’s Regional Investment Corporation The On-Farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme New water infrastructure to be delivered through the new National Water Grid As I’ve said to the Australian Parliament many times, drought support will need to be ramped up as conditions worsen – especially as we head into summer.

It is worth noting, however, the only drought program which to date has not been available to primary producers in horticulture and viticulture, is the Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.

In recent weeks, I have raised this issue with the Drought Relief Minister David Littleproud on behalf of local orchardists and vignerons. He has approved it but it needs the NSW Government (who administer but do not pay for it) to sign it off as well. Hopefully this will happen soon.

This is a great example of local lobbying in partnership with our farmers bringing real change at a national level. It will be welcome news to local farmers trying to source more water.

Managing water infrastructure is a key issue in the midst of one of the worst droughts in history and Central Tablelands Water had some excellent suggestions for Lake Rowlands, a dam which supplies water to more than 72,000 people in the Central West. I will now raise them with the Federal Government.

SPORTING CHAMPIONS RECOGNISED It was great to welcome some our best and brightest young sportspeople from the Calare electorate to the office last week. A total of 19 local athletes were successful under Round 1 of the 2019/20 Local Sporting Champions grants program.

The Local Sporting Champions program is designed to provide financial assistance for junior coaches, officials and competitors participating in state, national or international championships. This is especially important for our country kids who often travel long distances for training and competing.

Well done to all of the recipients and we wish you all the best in your sporting pursuits!

A DIFFICULT BUT NECESSARY DECISION The situation of the Sri Lankan family who face deportation is extremely sad and must be heart-breaking for them. They have certainly made an undeniable contribution to the Biloela community and to regional Australia.

While I certainly have a huge amount of sympathy for them, it is worth remembering their cases have been reviewed a combined seven times, including by the High Court - the highest court in the country.

They have, unfortunately, been found not to be refugees, and the reality is, they paid people smugglers to get to Australia.

My fear is that if Australia makes exceptions for people who have children while living here, the boats will simply restart and the trade in human misery will recommence, resulting in more

deaths at sea.

When John Howard left office in 2007, there were just a handful of people in detention. Soon after, 50,000 people came when the borders were effectively opened. It has taken Australia years to process them and we are still going. Tragically, more than 1000 people died at sea (that we know of), during that time.

In terms of welcoming migrants and refugees, Australia is among the most generous in the world, but I think the national interest has to take precedence in this case – as difficult as the decision is.

That’s why I’m with ScoMo on this one I hope the Sri Lankan family can return to Sri Lanka and make an application to migrate through the proper channels.

It would appear (on the whole) that the Spring has arrived  For those who have lived in the Central West for a bazillion years, the change of season always gives us something to chat about. “Ahhh, September is the best time of the year”. “I like it when the leaves fall in March better”. “I’m a fan of the cold”. “I’m gonna move north before winter comes again”. And of course the oldie but goodie … “If you don’t like the weather … stop whinging and don’t live here!”

September 1st (Father’s Day) saw us bite the bullet and stop feeding logs into the slow combustion fire. The temp outside warranted this decision at midday on Dad’s day, but by the morning of Sept 2, the temp inside our house has dropped from the pleasant 20 degrees that the fire kept it at, to a challenging 14.7 degrees. I guess it’ll be a while before the walls of the house warm up!

Me? I’m a fan of September and October.

The stunning mornings, the stillness of the early afternoons (the only thing that kills it for me in Orange is the wind), and the realisation that wearing t-shirts is actually an option again. One part of me will miss hiking it out to the forest with permit, chainsaw and wingmen in hand – for yet another muscle testing session of woodcutting and hauling. We cut the logs big and then lug them home, doing the splitting behind the shed. Excellent for fitness and the ‘paddock to plate’ experience, but at age 53 it’s becoming a little less fun than it used to be. Don’t think #3 son and wife ever thought it was fun, but we’ve saved a motza cutting our own wood over a decade. We also subscribe to the theory that “wood heat is the best heat”, way better than Air-Con or gas heat – up for debate I guess. Won’t have to worry about sawdust, voltarens and bar lube until next March.

Thoughts now turn to being occupied for three hours every weekend as we garden and mow. The pros of having a small chunk of acreage certainly outweigh the cons, and solving the problems of the world when on the ride-on is up there as a pro, I guess. But also with the good stuff comes one of the rare things I really detest about the warmer months – sunscreen. In the days when I had hair, it was of the orange variety. That means my skin only needs about 8 seconds in the sun to start frying, and I’m still being super careful to this day.

Way back when I was a pup, the sunscreen was called ‘Blockout’, and it was ugly to say the least. Can you remember it? It was a translucent blue colour, it was really sticky and it smelt a bit like metho. It also didn’t last very long, so there was certainly no ‘four hours between applications’ in those days. The first day of Spring last week also marked the initial application of sunscreen.

Now I’ll be doing it religiously for the next 6 months. Ugh. Even though my pasty white skin could be used as a satellite reflector dish, I’ve been very lucky when it comes to skin hassles. A couple of little bits frozen here and there, and an application of the special cream to ward off the nasties potentially hiding underneath is all I’ve had. I know it only takes ONE miss with my sunscreen application and I’ll pay for it for days – and if I’m not on the ball I could pay the ultimate price. So I guess lathering every couple of hours is really just a small price. It’s Spring …

I’ll remember.

Spring makeover ADVICE FROM AN EXPERT

pring is here and there is no better time to get started on giving your home that makeover you’ve been thinking about.

To help you get started, Orange City Life sat down with interior designer Rebecca Dunkley from K & H Interiors and Design to get a few tips and advice on some simple ways you can transform your home.

New window furnishings “Curtains and blinds can make a big difference to a room,” said Rebecca.

“But you should always start with why you want to cover the window. Are you wanting it for privacy? Or it is it for thermal comfort? That really narrows down your selection to where we should be looking.

If you had a whole wall of glass facing west, in summer time that is going to get super hot, so you would definitely be looking for a curtain with a block out lining and even something else behind that like

honeycomb or roller blind as well.

“And, of course, they should also be aesthetically pleasing from the inside and outside of the home. So those are all things you should consider.”

Add a new floor rug “Floor rugs are great in a room, I don’t think people use them enough,” said Rebecca. “Even on top of carpet, it really settles a space and defines it.

“I tend to recommend oversized rugs and not to have anything too small in the space, you want it to be in scale with the room, especially people with open plan homes. Some open plan homes can look like one big, single room, but there are three different purposes — kitchen, dining and living area — a rug can really define an area in your space.

“Colour-wise, what I recommend is don’t do something that is going to match your floor. If you have a dark grey carpet don’t put a dark grey rug on it; It has to

be something contrasting. And don’t be scared to put some colour down too, colour can really lift a room!”

Time to repaint?

“A lot of people are extremely conservative and just want to do white and there are a hundred different whites. It is a good starting point and a good base, but I think you can make a room look really amazing by pulling in some colour.

It doesn’t have to be hugely outrageous; it can just be a subtle tone of a colour and that can look really smart!

“If people are too intimidated by colour choice, they can come in a talk to us about what they are after and how we can achieve it. Come in and we can do a colour consult or do up a whole mood board for your entire home.”

Have a plan “If you are going to do a reno, your whole house or even just a room, have a plan to start with and then the job doesn’t feel so

big. If it looks just too big, some people get scared they don’t end up doing anything or they might just buy some bits and pieces here and there and make some wrong choices and then they give up.

...If people are too intimidated by colour choice, they can come in a talk to us about what they are after and how we can achieve it...

“Don’t purchase anything until you have a plan. Then, buy those elements as you can afford it and you won’t make any wrong decisions. You can pull the plan out and say, ‘Right, what do I need to do next’.

Apartments, flats, units, condos, co-ops, pads, penthouses… Whatever you call them, they’re coming to Orange! So believes Williams Machin managing director Tom Sheehan.

The “housing of the future” as witnessed in numerous Sydney suburbs like Wolli Creek will eventually come to Orange for those looking for convenience and proximity, Tom believes.

“One of the things we are seeing is interest in CBD residential properties with townhouse development and the like,” Tom explained.

“With an ageing population, we have many older folk who are happy to live in an apartment,” he said.

Ballarat and Bendigo in Victoria have already got on the apartment-block bandwagon with new

developments in their respective cities.

He points out that it was only a few decades ago in our larger cities that units were almost totally peopled by single men and women and young couples starting-out on their first few years.

“Absolutely, when you think about it, the same people who live in Sydney live in Orange,” he added.

“It is changing, my parents moved from a house on Sydney’s north shore to a fifth floor apartment in Kirribili (on Sydney Harbour).

“It’ll come to Orange. I’m slightly-expecting that in three to five years, apartment blocks are going to go up cheek by jowl to the CBD with underground carparks; people just love the convenience of them,” Tom said.

How to get the BEST out of OUR COUNCILS with AMANDA SPALDING

I love local government and have spent most of my life working in councils in NSW and the north of England and want to see our councils be the best they can be.

I am grateful for this opportunity to write a column on ‘How to get the best out of our Councils’ as we, the community, can do a lot more to help our Councils to serve us better. I aim to explain how we might do that by first explaining the framework of local government.

In the midst of all of the controversy over the proposals to amalgamate councils over the last few years there were other reforms. The NSW Local Government Act provides the legal framework for the system of local government for New South Wales. The aim of the Act is to enable councils to carry out their functions in a way that facilitates local communities that are strong, healthy and prosperous.

The purpose of the Act includes to ‘facilitate engagement with the local community and to provide for a system of local government that is accountable to the community and that is

sustainable, flexible and effective.

In making decisions councils should: • r ecognise diverse local community needs and interests.

• consider social justice principles.

• c onsider the long term and cumulative effects of actions on future generations.

• c onsider the principles of ecologically sustainable development.

•b e transparent and decision-makers are to be accountable for decisions and omissions.

Many years ago, in England, I worked with a woman who had been brought up in Greece under the ‘Colonels’ regime. She told me that there was a book called ‘The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship’ and the regime tore it in half and gave the ‘Responsibilities’ half out to all citizens. Having worked in local government for many years I

sometimes feel as if the communities of Australia got the other half of the book, and need to spend more time exercising our responsibilities as well as our rights!

So what do Councils do?

Local government is complex, so I am summarising what the community can expect from their councils.

Councils should provide strong and effective representation, leadership, planning and decisionmaking.

Councils should carry out functions in a way that provides the best possible value for residents and ratepayers.

Councils should plan strategically, using the integrated planning and reporting framework, for the provision of effective and efficient services and regulation to meet the diverse needs of the local community.

WHAT ARE COUNCILS’ FUNCTIONS? Providing and maintaining infrastructure Providing an appropriate and affordable level of infrastructure is one important contribution a council makes to its community. For example, councils provide and maintain local roads, bridges, public car parks, footpaths, sporting fields, parks, and art galleries and, in regions, are responsible for water and sewerage.

Planning for sustainable development Councils have a major role in providing long term strategic planning for a local government area as well as town planning, zoning and subdivisions. Councils are responsible for processing development applications, for building site and compliance inspections, and for ensuring compliance with building regulations.

Protecting the environment Councils also have a major role in helping to protect the environment. They have responsibilities under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 and can issue various protection of the environment notices including clean up, prevention, compliance cost, provision of records and information and noise control notices.

They also carry out activities to preserve access and amenity to the environment, such as

recycling, street cleaning, regulating parking and management of vegetation including bush land reserves.

PLANNING FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Supporting community development Councils provide a range of services, including some aimed at groups in the community with special needs. Community services include libraries, sport and recreation facilities, home care services such as ‘meals on wheels’, swimming pools, playground facilities and child care centres.

Supporting economic development This is not shown on the diagram as it is not mandatory but many communities consider it important and councils chose to contribute to economic development by working with local businesses, coordinating economic development groups/ activities/events and providing tourism services and facilities.

Safeguarding public health Councils help maintain high standards of public health and reduce the risk of exposure to a wide range of diseases through activities such as food shop inspections, waste disposal, pest and vermin control and hazardous material containment. Regular readers of our ‘Thumbs’ would have noticed a big Thumbs down to me by a reader a few weeks back.

This reader was offended by my constant support for local businesses, particularly our retailers and the way I keep urging our readers to support local businesses etc. etc.

I make no apologies for my actions whatsoever because there is a hell of a lot at stake if we don’t start getting our priorities right.

Whether we want to admit it or not, there are a lot of quite smart people within our community who are all singing the same song.

Verse one says something like “Support local businesses, they’re relying on you”, verse two “If you don’t, local businesses will progressively close”, verse three “When businesses close, jobs go”, verse four “Who will give your kids a job then?” verse five “Only fools would think otherwise” and finally verse six “What are you prepared to do to stop the rot?”

There’s also quite a lot of other people across our community singing another song. The verses to this one go something like this, verse one “Shopping online is the modern way, get with the program”, verse two “Why pay more than you have to for anything”, verse three “local businesses will find a way to survive”, verse four “local jobs are not my problem”, verse five “I’m happy to let other people sort it out” and verse six “It’ll all work out in the wash over time”.

You can see by this not so funny comparison why I say, as a community, we’re between a

rock and hard place with this vital issue.

Now I accept that we’ve now gone far too far with online shopping and will never, ever convince the broader community to substantially shop at and support their local businesses fully. What we might be able to do however, if as a community we have a mind to do so, is slow down the trend.

There’s only one sure fire way to do that and it will take a mighty effort on the part of stakeholders, if it’s to happen. By stakeholders I mean our Council, the Orange Business Chamber and local business owners themselves to name a few.

We need a massive publicity campaign to drive home why it’s so important and what the consequences will be if we don’t. It really is that simple.

These stakeholders, probably with substantial financial support from our Council, and through a massive media campaign, needs to paint a picture of what future Orange will look like if we don’t start encouraging locals to support local businesses and why.

They need to drive the message home in no uncertain terms, not just with warm fuzzy words and notions, but with hard facts about

what Orange will look like in 10 – 20 years if the current trend continues.

Councils like consultants, strategic plans, forecasts, predictions and the like, so let’s urge them get some credible numbers and forecasts about the likely threats to local spending patterns, what timeframes we could be facing and how online shopping might affect our city overall in coming years.

This probably sounds like nothing more than doom and gloom to most people reading this, but you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to realise that in the same way as when water dries up, you end up with drought and devastation, when money dries up in a community like Orange……well, surely I don’t have to explain how that would play out. It wouldn’t be pretty!

If each of us did genuinely THINK about it, maybe some of our thinking, and our shopping habits would change. Perhaps, we could start by reflecting on the verses from the first song mentioned above.

If we did, the last verse should stir us into action – “What are we (starting with the stakeholders I mentioned, followed by each of us) prepared to do to stop the rot?”

Richard Hattersley writes: Dear Editor WHAT WE SHOULD EXPECT FROM OUR BUSINESS CHAMBER I would like to thank you for your article in last week’s paper ‘New Leadership, New Focus needed for Orange Business Chamber’ and wanted to explain more about why four Orange business people are standing for election to the Board of the Orange Business Chamber.

Wikipedia describes a chamber of commerce as: A chamber of commerce (or board of trade) is a form of business network, for example, a local organisation of businesses whose goal is to further the interests of businesses.

Business owners in towns and cities form these local societies to advocate on behalf of the local business community.

Membership of the Orange Business Chamber costs $198.00 per annum with a sole trader paying the same as a company with a large number of employees. It is not exactly clear what members are receiving for this membership fee.

The four of us, Jack Evans, Amanda Spalding, Daniel McGregor and myself are all strong supporters of Put Orange First with one of our main objectives being: To create an open dialogue between stakeholders in the Orange Business Community.

We have found that there are many different stakeholders with similar aims and objectives in Orange. We felt that what we were trying to achieve should really be led by the Orange Business Chamber rather than establishing yet another organisation. We approached the Chamber to suggest the establishment of a retail sub-committee which would assist their members in managing the current retail recession. Sadly the Orange Business Chamber declined to take up the challenge.

We want to see the Orange Business Chamber provide value for money for its members, to further the interests of businesses and to advocate strongly on behalf of the wider business community. We have a number of ideas of what we would like to see the Chamber do, and we want to hear from members about what they would like their Chamber to do for them.

Some of our ideas include: — Ensure our Business Chamber promotes, supports and encourages its members — Stage regular ‘After Five’ events to facilitate more networking between local businesses — Stage an occasional long lunch with a recognised guest speaker — Overhaul the annual business awards — Provide more transparent and effective advocacy on behalf of the local business community — Establish regular engagement with Orange City Council, Orange 360 and other stakeholders — Provide a stronger voice in local media and social media — Create a new business chamber website — Seek regular feedback from members — Develop a creative marketing plan to better promote Orange as a place to shop and do business We would love to have the support of local businesses at the Orange Business Chamber AGM where a new Board will be elected. The meeting is to be held at the Orange Ex Services Club on Wednesday 18 September at 5.30pm.

When Orange City Life decided on the theme of Put Orange First as our community project for 2019, we had no idea where it would lead.

We’re now almost 9 months into the year and although there has been a lot happening behind the scenes, the visible evidence, particularly the branding we had hoped for, has still been largely missing. That may be about to change as time and weather start to kick in.

During the year, a group of local business people have been meeting each week to discuss and implement plans to push the Put Orange First theme. Among the initiatives have been to talk to Council about having promotional flags flying on the flagpoles along Summer Street all year round. Printed T shirts have been produced and distributed by Jack Evans Workwear and it is hoped these will start to appear more as the weather improves. We at OC Life have produced printed Put Orange First pens to give away and we have been

The recent community forum on the future of Orange CBD looked at how the city might look and feel for residents in the future.

The key to a vibrant CBD is having a reason for local, regional and visitor shoppers to “take a look” - on a regular basis.

The store owners, shop keepers and cafe’s owners in our CBD streets are the ones who are taking risks, investing their money, time and energy in providing the shops, services and community/customer engagement that makes a CBD work.

Economists’ reason that $1 spent in a local store goes around the community 3-5 times before it is exhausted. $1 spent on global internet buying sites leaves the community immediately. It is inevitable that if the local stores are not supported - they cease to exist and we end up with a bland CBD - with empty shop windows.

Can the locals stock every item available? No. However, a conversation might mean that the item could be sourced with a reasonable delivery cycle and a fair price.

One of the encouraging aspects of the drought has been the way communities have supported each other. From providing meals to those in need, feed for stock, carting water – to buying and donating local store gift vouchers for hairdressing, a massage, a café meal, a vehicle service, a family game- (things that may be deferred in tough times but go a long way towards making a person feel better) – and there is always the opportunity to have a conversation with the service provider. The Ladies of the CWA have embraced the “shop local” approach in exactly this way. They see the value in not only supporting their local primary producers – but also generating cash flow for local businesses – businesses that are an integral part of the community fabric.

The outcome of shopping local energises the community, provides employment, creates a vibrant/ unique visitor experience and feeds local families.

Whatever your shopping needs - think local, have a conversation - before hitting the “buy now” key.

A second business forum was also held this week where local businesses were given the chance to have input into what they would like to see happen to keep Orange businesses vibrant and growing.

Orange City Life started the ball rolling, other interested people are now currently running with the theme, now let me invite you to think about what Put Orange First means to you?

It’s a great theme, with great implications, but not much will happen if enough of us don’t decide to pick it up and run with it. Orange City Life will continue to do our part an part of that will be to support and publicise anyone else who wants to do something and run with it.

The Dance from Far Horizons Spectacular, Orange’s annual celebration of cultural diversity through the medium of dance, promises to be a feast of dance styles from across the globe.

A

collaboration between Orange CultureHub, Orange Tribal Fusion and Orange City Council’s Migrant and Refugee Support Services, the Dance from Far Horizons Spectacular is about celebrating the richness of our culturally diverse community with an evening of fun and dance.

And it’s all happening on Saturday 21 September 2019 at Kenna Hall in Hill Street.

Starting at 6.30pm, the evening will feature numerous dancers and dance groups from Orange and elsewhere, said Orange Tribal Fusion dance teacher, Nicole Kennedy.

“There’ll be Fattisha Kumara with dance

styles seen in Rio de Janeiro, Bronwyn Buasavahn from Canberra displaying a double sword solo dance and other groups such as Ghawazi Caravan from the Blue Mountains, starring Devi Mamak, Dancing with Sabrina’s dancers from Orange and Canowindra performing Bachata, Cha Cha , Argentine Tango and Salsa,” said Nicole.

“Local Tribal-Style Bellydance Group Orange Tribal Fusion will be dancing to Lombarda and La Revedere. The Shimmy Sista’s will be performing Oriental style bellydance with a solo performance by Ash. Guest group performers will be Azzire tribal from the South Coast, Mosaic tribal from Canberra, Bashira Bellydance from Bathurst, Onyx from Castle Hill and Aurora from the Greater MaCarthur area.”

All dancers are volunteering their time for the evening’s entertainment which will conclude with a dance party.

All it costs is just $2, and for you to bring a plate of food to share.

“It is a big sharing of multicultural food and it was very popular last year, we had the most sensational meal … the cheapest feed in town!” said Nicole, who particularly encourage new migrants to Orange to come along and meet others in the community.

For a night of spectacular colour, dancing and food, head along to Kenna Hall on Saturday 21 September at 6.30pm for a fun filled night of entertainment, good food, fun and dance! Cultural dress is encouraged.

Members of Acacia Quartet Join Local Musicians for Intimate Performance Orange Regional Conservatorium staff, including two members of the acclaimed Acacia Quartet, will be performing some of the most loved music ever written for strings tomorrow night at the third concert of the 2019 Chamber Music Series.

The Chamber Music Series is a new innovation for 2019 that combines the conservatoriums staff’s abilities as highly trained musicians with their love of teaching Tomorrow night, our local professional musicians, including the Acacia Quartet’s Lisa Stewart (violin) and Stefan Duwe (viola), will perform classics such as the ever popular and beautiful The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Terzetto in C major by Dvorák.

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? I just don’t like rude people- you know, be kind and smile and be happy, I find it really hard when some people are nasty. I think, why be nasty!?

What big world events were the most memorable while you were growing up?

I was evacuated during the war, to Gilgandra- that was a really big step.

I was only seven years old, I went with my Grandmother, and my Aunt and my cousin, his surname was Fox so he called me cousin rabbit. *laughs* I was an only child, and I loved my Grandmother so much, (she was English and my Grandfather was Scottish), it wasn’t so dramatic for me because I was with family and just loved them so much.

What is your favourite childhood memory? Oh.. That was hard times.. I loved my cousins because I was an only child, they kind of felt like they belonged to me.

I had wonderful parents, I wasn’t spoilt because times were so bad, people often say I would have been but it wasn’t like that at all, my Mother was very clever with her hands, I didn’t ever have a dress brought for me or anything, she would sew for me and a lot of other people, so I was very fortunate.

What life advice would you pass along to your grandchildren? Always be friendly and kind - and they are, they are beautiful.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Hmm.. I don’t know really what I wanted to be.. but I was a receptionist at a young age, and I loved that, I loved working around people.

What are you most proud of ? My family, I’ve got a wonderful son, I lost my eldest son. I love them all.

What did you get up to when you were young? I had a bike which I rode almost every day, I did have a bad accident on it and busted my chin pretty badly, that didn’t stop me I just loved it and I loved playing tennis too, our friends’ neighbours had a tennis court.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun now? Going out shopping and seeing my family!

ORANGE CENTENARY Orange celebrated in style for the centenary of the municipality in January 1960.

One-hundred years previously the town was officially recognised and its first council elected. About 5000 people lined the streets and crowded in front of the Court House, many of them wearing period costumes and some arriving in horse-drawn vehicles.

Orange City Band played lively music and a number of people took on the roles of former prominent residents in a reenactment, led by the Mayor, Ald Alan Ridley.

Central West Women’s Forum News The Central West Women’s Forum will hold the second in our Leadership Series of events on 14th September at DuntryLeague from 6.00 to 8.30p.m. Canapes will be served and a bar will be available.

Dr. Skye Saunders will address an audience following on from the success of the inaugural canape evening held in June with speaker Minister Bronnie Taylor. Skye is a passionate and committed advocate for the advancement of gender equality.

Maraynne Hawthorn, the Chair of the newly incorporated Central West Women’s Forum said ‘we are delighted that Skye has accepted our invitation to speak at our second canape evening. Skye is a visionary speaker, who is able to convey messages with clarity and resonance, leaving a lasting impact on both hearts and minds.’

Vice Chair of CWWF, Richard Hattersley said ‘Skye invites men to be agents for positive change in a culture of gender discrimination, and the Central West Women’s Forum also believes that men and women together need to be champions of change’.

Richard said ‘We are also delighted to announce that The Hon. Sussan Ley, MP, Australian Minister for the Environment, will be our speaker on Saturday 7th December.’

The Central West Women’s Forum has been established to give voice to women of the Central West who want to make a difference, achieve results and influence the choices available across the region.

Dr Skye Saunders is an Associate Professor in Law at the Australian National University, an Employment/ Discrimination Solicitor and is the Vice President of the YWCA Canberra. Skye pioneered the first research in Australia on sexual harassment in rural workplaces which is contained in her book ‘Whispers from the Bush- The Workplace Sexual Harassment of Australian Rural Women.’

LOS ANGELES Travel tip: If you have Los Angeles and Las Vegas on your to do list, hire a car to drive route 66, it’s amazing and eye opening and you won’t see those amazing desert sites anywhere else (unless you are planning a trip to the desert that is.)

We detoured to explore a small town called Cabazon and stopped to see the [abandoned-ish] dinosaur park- home to the world’s biggest dinosaurs, it was a favourite of mine.

This time around Atlanta, Georgia was a favourite and somewhere we would have liked to stay longer to explore, there is SO much to do there!

General travel tip: If you can, download and use UBER (a ride share app), it saved us a lot of money using this instead of paying for taxis!

Lots of bacon, burgers, ribs and gelato was consumed and we had a great trip, though nothing beats that that feeling of coming home.

Hollywood’s Redemption Redemption stories make blockbuster bucks. Marvel movies and soap dramas alike feature tales of gritty heroes with dark pasts overcoming pride, selfishness or some evil act that haunts them to this day. Where does our fascination with finding a way back from failure come from? Does life imitate art?

Desiring redemption is entirely human.

Redemption from broken relationships, embarrassment and shame. But unlike in Hollywood, the failures in our own lives can’t be fixed by beating up bad guys or riding horses at sunset. Indeed, at best our successes only mask the failures underneath – like turning over a cushion

to hide a wine stain. They don’t erase or make them right.

Jesus’ promise to us is one of redemption. The Bible proudly offers: “Come, let us settle the matter: Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow”. It’s a profound promise that there is no shame, no deed, no person, that can’t find redemption.

Including me and you. Hollywood promises redemption in revenge, thumping bad guys or ditching the nogood boyfriend. It’s all cushion flipping.

THUMBS UP Can I give absolute THUMBS UP to Front of Hospital Receptionists Jane and Lara. I had to go urgently to Orange Hospital. In my stressed state and not knowing the hospital I went to front reception desk.

The receptionist was polite and assisted me to the area where my mum had been rushed to. Their professional ability to keep me calm and find where my mum was rushed to made my visit just that little easier. Thanks Jane & Lara.
