Look to trade courses for future jobs, training organisation says The best career prospects for many of our young future workers is in vocational education and training (VET) courses, a local jobs provider believes.

W

hile Australians once dreamed of sending one of their children to university, changing work patterns and the increasing reluctance of young people to take four years out of their lives for a degree-level education has seen a swing back to vocational training.

This return to more “traditional” careers is supported by the latest data, Verto Chief Ron Maxwell said.

“According to the recent ‘Perceptions Are Not Reality’ report, parents should encourage their children to consider vocational education and training (VET) instead of university because, in many cases, it is a pathway to better job prospects and higher paying jobs,” Mr Maxwell said.

He said that this reality is in stark contrast to current perceptions that almost always value university over trade skills.

“Historically, in Orange and Western NSW, many schools have predominantly encouraged HSC graduates to pursue university because of a perception of lower-earning power in VET and better

“This lack of encouragement and limited promotion of apprenticeships and traineeships within schools, and often by many parents, is extremely disappointing and often not in the best interests of these high school-leavers,” Mr Maxwell said.

He said, basically, that the future of most work opportunities is in VET courses.

“The simple fact is nine of the 10 biggest jobs of the future in Australia are likely to need VET qualifications, and apprentices and trainees earn an average of $2000 more than university graduates in their first year.

“Other clear benefits of apprenticeships and traineeships include hands-on learning rather than spending all day in a classroom or learning from a computer, no HECS loan debts, plus it’s proven to be a faster and more successful way to one day become your own boss and own your own business.”

He said that the changes being wrought on our economy by the pandemic are making trade and certificate level qualifications more, not less, important.

However the lockdown has not stopped Doug from producing his famous top-of-the-line potato varieties including such high-end favourites as Midnight Pearl, Crimson Pearl, Otway Gold, Elizabeth’s Choice, and Jacklyn.

“Jacklyn, that’s the one that I provide to the restaurant ‘Charred’ in Orange and to the Union Bank,” Doug explained.

Producing some of the best spuds in the central west is no fluke for Doug who comes from a background with senior positions at some of the world’s most prestigious food producers.

“I’ve been an agronomist by trade my whole life. I set up a wheat research station for the University of

Sydney at Narrabri... I then worked for the CSIRO at the Ord River Project in Western Australia. I also did research into grain sorghum production,” he explained.

His other work included setting up a production plant for a pharmaceutical crop (for eye drops) at Alstonville near Gosford, and as agricultural manager for Arnott’s Snack Foods in Sydney.

Potatoes became his game when he was contracted by one of the world’s largest snack food processors to provide their local supply of the humble spud.

he’s built on his 80-acre farm in order to plant an early crop that he can dig up in time for Christmas. He then programs plants so that he is digging up fresh potatoes all the way through to April.

“I use the hot houses for new potatoes for Christmas, but I also grow cabbages, lettuce, and other crops like that,” he said.

“I was basically an agent who had to source 10,000 tonnes of potatoes per annum, I did that for 15 years,” he said.

Elizabeth’s specialty is plants specifically acclimatised for our nuanced and tricky Central Tablelands conditions. “I grow everything from roses, perennials, shrubs, and trees. I grow them all myself and hot house them here, and they’re all acclimatised for the Central Tablelands – they’ll all grow well here,” she said proudly.

But it was a chance conversation with a friend that saw him develop his latest career line.

“Due to the lockdowns, I have a large amount of stock available at the moment,” Elizabeth added.

“I was talking to a mate of mine in Victoria and he said, ‘I know you and Elizabeth go to markets and the like,’ and he sent me some samples of his potatoes.

“We can’t go the markets at the moment, we’re just waiting for everything to open up again, so we’re just working from the farm and selling in person,” Doug said.

“So, I went to the markets at Bathurst and gave them away, next time we went, everyone said ‘where are your potatoes?’ so we started growing them ourselves.”

Indigo prizes “forest bathing” for the trees

Wonder why a walk in the woods always makes one feel energised and invigorated?

The benefits of trees to our wellbeing, however, is as much scientific as spiritual, medicinal as aesthetic, studies now show.

Shinrin-Yoku (Japanese for “forest bathing”) involves immersion in the beneficial atmosphere of trees and has become a popular response to the COVID-19 lockdowns and our desire to reconnect with the natural world.

of locals who have started making daily pilgrimages to bushland settings to profit from both the health and visual impact of trees.

This follows a number of studies indicating that close contact with trees for periods each day aids natural immunity by boosting so-called “natural killer cells” (NKs) that protect the body from infections.

As their name implies, NKs are a type of immune white blood cell containing enzymes that can “kill” both tumour cells and other cells infected with a virus.

Indigo believes that these benefits are why people under stress, distracted, or unwell,

often instinctively seek solace amongst trees and woods.

“Forests once covered much of the earth, and our ancestors spent large periods of their lives in such an environment,” Indigo said.

“So, it seems natural that just such an environment also provides not just emotional benefits, but also serious health advantages that we can’t ignore at a time like this.”

Japanese studies carried out a decade ago involving a dozen Tokyo-based office workers taking a series of two-hour forest walks found genuine benefits from exposure to the wild.

“Almost all of the subjects (11 of the 12)

Taking your first five steps of Shinrin-Yoku showed higher NK activity after the trip (about 50 per cent increased) compared with before,” the abstract for the 2007 study said in summary.

Indigo believes that the increased importance that locals have placed on “the great outdoors” since the pandemic first hit in February 2020 is due to these innate and genuine health benefits, and not just to get away from the worries of the current health crisis.

“Humans, like animals, instinctively seek what is beneficial to us, that is why places like Gosling Reserve, Lake Canobolas, and our parks have become so popular over the past 18 months,” she said.

The good news is that we don’t have to become forest-dwellers to have these higher NKs. A later scientific paper from the same scientists claimed the benefits of these walks lasted a week after the interactions.

“These findings indicate that a forest bathing trip increased NK activity, number of NK cells, and levels of intracellular anticancer proteins, and that this effect lasted at least seven days after the trip,” the authors found.

“While I generally walk in bush or forest settings most days, the positive energy that you get remains for quite a time afterwards,

there’s no strict regime you need to follow,” Indigo said.

The good news for Orange district locals is that the Colour City and surrounds is one of the best places west of the mountains for both the variety and number of forest walks.

“There are so many wonderful places, walking tracks and the like, where we can really get in touch with beautiful forest areas.”

There are now 44 accredited Shin rin-Yoku forests in Japan, with the research conducted helping to establish Shinrin-Yoku and fore st therapy throughout the world.

The recent announcement that Orange City Council is seeking to remove another 500 trees, on top of the 250-odd they have already removed, for the proposed south Orange sports stadium flies in the face of the renewed interest in getting back to nature post-COVID-19, Indigo believes.

Step 1 – Leave behind your pho ne, camera or any other distrac tions, so that you can be fully present in the experience.

Step 2 – Leave behind your goa ls and expectations. Wander aim lessly, allowing your body to take you wherever it wants.

Step 3 – Pause from time to tim e, to look more closely at a leaf or notice the sensation of the path beneath your feet.

Step 4 – Find a comfy spot to take a seat and listen to the sounds around you. See how the behaviour of the birds and other animals cha nge s when they become used to your presen ce.

Step 5 – If you go with others, mak e an agreement to resist talking until the end of the walk, when you could gather to share your experience s.

“Positive health, being active, and staying fit is now more important than ever at this time, but we’ve got a Council that is destroying trees literally by the hundreds, and now they want to remove hundreds more?

“Sport is important, but so is our ability to access the natural world in places convenient for all of the people of Orange, not just those in bushland settings,” Indigo concluded.
