If we can’t have rain, glorious weather like we’ve experienced this week is next best, especially with so many things happening at this time of year.

On that note, best wishes to all for successful NAIDOC Week and Wine Week celebrations.

It’s another big issue of OCLife we have for you this week and I hope you get lots of pleasure from the various articles my team has put together.

On that, I mentioned last week that I’d have something a bit special for you this week and I have. On our recent cruise I shot the breeze and asked the Captain of the ship for an interview for our magazine. He graciously said yes, and you can read what I discovered in this issue. I realise it’s not very local, but I felt it could be interesting to say the least, you don’t get to talk to the Captain of a monster cruise ship too often. Hope you enjoy reading a bit about Captain Craig.

That’s only one of the great things to read this week, there’s plenty more to keep you entertained as always.

Something else I’d like to flag is a bit of fun we’re planning for readers next month. Each year around Christmas we run some sort of promotion for our readers and this year I’ve come up with something a bit different.

It’s called Find Santa and we’re giving you the chance to win one of 20 hams for Christmas. It’s probably not quite what you think but you can read how it works next week, so stayed tuned.

It’s also worth mentioning that we’ve received some positive feedback from our How to get the best out of our Councils articles. These are being written by a lady named Amanda Spalding who is well qualified to help us negotiate our way through the spin and reams of pollie speak that governments at all levels use to explain things. There’s been considerable dis-satisfaction aired in various circles over the performance of our present Council and without making any judgements on that here, our purpose is to give people information about how the system works. At the end of the day, voters choose their Council and if people are unhappy or otherwise, election time is the time and place to make your feelings felt.

elieved to have been built about 1875, “Mena” or “Killiney” as it was originally known, was the home of Thomas Garrett Dalton, the son of James Dalton of Duntryleague.

The Dalton family’s influence on Orange cannot be overstated.

Starting out as storekeepers, supplying the gold miners of Lucknow, the Daltons built a massive commercial and pastoral empire, stretching from the Western districts to the wharves of Sydney.

Cinema, and the remains of the once massive flour mill in Peisley Street stand tribute to their many thriving commercial enterprise.

“They became extremely wealthy, they would have been a little like the Packers of today,” said Robert Bruce, local photographer and great grandson of James Dalton of Duntryleague.

“They developed a very big rural empire, particularly out at Kangaroobie, Ammerdown and all over the place so they had a huge amount of properties and James built numerous houses in Orange for his children.”

of the Dalton Bros enterprises and flour mills. He was an active townsman and three-time mayor of Orange and lived at the “Mena” until his death in 1911.

The name “Mena” was given to the Kite Street home during the 1930s when it was used as a hospital.

“In fact, I was born in “Mena” and my brother,” said Robert, who has been pleased to the see the home now restored to its former glory.

“They’ve done a great job, it is like a museum really, it is an extraordinary house. These homes are part of the heritage of the town, part of the history of the town” This stunning home is on the National Heritage list and, as you can see, is a tremendous example of Australian Victorian architecture and one intertwined with the history of Orange.

EFFORT vs OUTCOME

BROOKE “Originally from Lake Macquarie, I moved to Orange in July after living in Cobar for five years, a cold change but it was exciting to experience the snow in winter and the beautiful blossoms as we are now in spring. Orange is a beautiful regional city to walk and cycle around and I love the dynamic of the locals, I’ve met a lot of different people.

The Botanic Gardens are stunning and the many gardens in the town centre bring me a smile, especially the ducks at Cook Park with their ducklings.

Coming to Orange is a career move for me and I am gaining a lot from working with the team at Blowes Real Estate.

Having just moved I knew I needed a social life, I have joined the Games n More family

participating in their mix of board games each week, Orange City Library has filled in many empty afternoons with their books and I also try my hand at arts and crafts, painting and colouring, I try to be artistic.

In the few months I’ve lived in Orange it has been great and I’m looking forward to calling Orange ‘home’ for a long time to come.”

While away on holidays recently I had time to think about a few things and one of the things I thought about was how hard it is today to get people to commit to things. People just don’t seem to take letting people know what they’re doing as seriously as they once did. Knowing what people are doing is so important, especially when you’re organising a function, event or the like. I don’t how many times over recent years I’ve heard organisers of various events say words like “people just aren’t getting back to me”, or “can you help us, numbers are very poor and we have commitments to meet” or “dealing with such apathy is impossible”.

Too often, when we assess something, we look at the outcome(s) and then make our judgement on that. In my view that is not helpful or fair at all. Using the examples above, it’s easy to see why people would say the business promotions we attempted were failures, the initiative with the flags was a failure and a so on. If all people get in return for their hard work and efforts when trying to do something that will benefit others is an acknowledgement that they failed, where do we go from here? If people like me, who are forever trying to do good things to help others are constantly seen as failures, no one will ever do anything.

I personally have faced this time and time again when I’ve tried to do various things to help or promote local businesses. For example, once upon a time if a publication like ours ran a shopping promotion, you could reasonably expect 50 or 60 businesses to participate.

Today, a similar promotion might attract a dozen businesses, if that.

This year, our Community Project Put Orange First has attempted to do several things to lift the spirits and prospects of local businesses.

Despite businesses feeling the pinch, and the minimal cost to participate in various initiatives, the response and participation rates have been way below expectations.

Put Orange First has also been trying to get a set of colourful promotional flags flying up Summer Street on a permanent basis. It’s now been 8 – 9 months trying to get something as simple as this organised through Council and it’s still no closer to coming to fruition.

We need to change our thinking on such things. We need to applaud and celebrate the efforts that people put in to make things happen. When someone puts their heart and soul into a project to benefit others, and the outcome doesn’t reach the expectations hoped for, that shouldn’t take away from the effort that went into it.

The point I want to make is this.

Failure is not necessarily a fair and reasonable reflection of the effort put in by the person organising an event, it’s possibly more a reflection on the failure of people to support it.

Put simply, no-one can control the outcome of any event, all they can hope to do is put in the effort, tick all the boxes and hope the people you’re appealing to will respond.

The moral of the story is, when someone does something good for the benefit of others, applaud the effort and acknowledge it, no matter what the outcome was.

A local family is on a mission to give back to a charity that has been there for them from the beginning, Ronald McDonald House has given 15-month-old Judd Cantrill the biggest gift of all, his family.

The Cantrill’s Ronald McDonald House (RMH) journey began in May, when Judd was taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital to investigate why he was having respiratory issues. Mum Alana explained, “At that point we only spent a few nights at RMH, and in that time and were blown away by the facility.”

Alana continued, “We were sent home in June, however on July 2, Judd was helicoptered back to Westmead when he stopped breathing, since then we have been living at RMH.” At this stage, Judd and his family are expected to stay in RMH until December.

“They has been our saving grace in a time when we are struggling... the facility itself is incredible but then you add the support of the staff and volunteers and it becomes a place of support not only as a place to stay, but as a support network.

When we have a tough day the staff and volunteers are there to talk to and help wherever they can!”

“It just makes a huge difference to all of our situations to have one less thing to worry about,” said Alana.

After a visit to see his nephew, Judd’s uncle, Jake Johnston was inspired to raise some money for RMH, with the knowledge that it costs the house $160 a night a family to stay there.

“I knew what the Ronald McDonald House did, though I didn’t really realise how much of a difference it makes. When I went there and saw it firsthand, just how hard some of the families were doing it and how much the house helps them. I wanted to do what I could to help out a bit.”

Thus was created ‘Run For Judd.’ This event was planned with the intent that community members can be sponsored as they walk or run laps of the Pinnacle stairs. Encourage your backers to sponsor you per lap, and of course, do as many laps as you can! Everyone is welcome, bring your

There are currently 18 Ronald McDonald Houses around the country and any funds raised are distributed between the Houses and their programs.

Alana added, “Jake has been so kind to organise this event, it’s extremely important for our family and me to support this charity that has given so much to our us when we have needed it most!

Donations are so important to keep the doors open for Ronald McDonald House.”

The Orange Bird Society once again has generously donated $500.00 to the St Vincent Society Vinnies Van and Café. Tony Ford, President of the Bird Society mentioned the money raised from the annual Bird Sale, held in March is particularly given to local charities.

r Ford said, “We have been donating to the Vinnies Van for several years as we know it is helping those who are struggling in Orange.”

The Van has been operating in Orange for 12 years and to show how much it is needed, from July 2018 to June 2019 approximately 2330 people accessed the service with the help of over 300 volunteers.

Paul said “We are really pleased to accept this donation to the Van and Café and we thank the Orange Bird Society for their generous support. It is donations such as this that allows the Van & Café to keep doing what they do. It is a service that is meeting a real community need.”

Mullion Creek robot rodeo

Mullion Creek Primary may be a small village school, but they are a big presence on the national RoboCup stage.

O

ver the recent school holidays, the Year 6 Performance team took out the National RoboCup Championship in Melbourne.

RoboCup pits teams of school students and their programming skills against each other in a number of different disciplines.

In Performance, the teams must choreograph a dance routine with their robots and are judged on their performance, the journal outlining their work and an interview.

“RoboCup is an amazing thing to get involved in,” said teacher Sharon Cloete. “You have to experience it, there are just rooms and rooms full of children, all sitting at their computers, all coding their own robot and then going to test it against others and it is just wonderful to see how

much they learn from each other.

“In Performance, they have to think of a scenario, like a story or a dance drama and they have to choose music to go with that and they’ve got to sort out what their robots are going to wear, what they are going to wear and then they’ve got to choreograph a dance to go with that, not just for the robots”, but for themselves as well. It is really an amazing thing!”

After winning the State competition in Canberra earlier this year, Sharon took their students to the national competition in Canberra held over the weekend of October 11-13.

The winning Mullion Creek team of Katelyn Peters, Madison Brooking, Ellie Calleja and Anna Martin were the only Primary School team in the Experiences Performance division.

Their performance, a rodeo scene, feature two robot horse riders, a rodeo clown and bull ride.

“They had a bull, which they 3D printed — that

they designed themselves — to make it be able to buck. They had sensors on the bull so that when the gate opens the bull rushes out… All the robots were depending on each other and reacting with each other to set off the next reaction,” said Sharon.

Mullion Creek students do robotics from kindergarten right through to Year Six,” said Sharon, who is enthusiastic about the skills it develops in their students.

“Robotics is the future. I mean if you look at any vocation out there, any job out there, they are all using robots nowadays whether it is the defence force, whether it is in medicine, whether it is in agriculture — people are using robots,” she said.

“It gets the children to think diversely, to think creatively and to think outside the square and the earlier children learn to code, that are involved in robotics… I think we’re setting them up with life skills really.”

This Sunday, the Rotary Club of Orange and Orange City Council have teamed up to put the focus on Sustainable Living.

n a first for Orange, Sustainable Living Week 2019 will kick off with an expo and community markets in the Orange Northcourt.

“The Orange Sustainable Living Expo will have a program of events talking about waste,” said John Mills, chairperson of the Rotary Club of Orange’s Sustainable Living Week committee.

“We’ve managed to get the services of Craig Reucassel, of the

ABC’s series the War on Waste: He is going to talk about recycling and what’s happening in the recycling area -particularly about food waste and soft plastics.

“We have a theatre group that is doing some environmental education, we’ll have the council talking about water security and strategies to minimise water use, there’s a company that has developed a wicking bed system for gardens; presentations about how people can better look at

their food waste and extract that out of the red bins, and then we’ve got about 16 specialist exhibitors looking at all things from waste to water, energy and the environment.”

The Expo will run from 9am to 2pm on Sunday 27 October, in conjunction with the Orange Rotary Community Markets.

But the Expo is just the start of a range of activities planned for Sustainable Living Week.

“We have an environmental walk,

a guided walk through Ploughman’s wetlands,” said John. “We have a workshop on making beeswax wraps, designed to reduce the use of gladwrap, we have a workshop on making native bee hotels, we’ve got a high schools sustainable cooking competition, and to finalise the week we also have a native vegetation planting out at the Waratah wetlands area.”

JOINS VOICES WITH ORANGE CHOIR — JONATHAN ROE —

Australian folk music legend Eric Bogle will be performing two unique concerts in Orange next month alongside the Orange Male Voice On Friday November 8 and Saturday November 9, Bogle and supporting musicians will be joined by 30 members of the Orange Male Voice Choir performing a selection of the singer/songwriter’s extensive catalogue.

The Scottish-born folk musician is probably best known for his emotional anti-war songs “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda” and “No Man’s Land”, as well as his comedic “Nobody’s Moggy Now” and “The Aussie Bar-B-Q”.

But his body of work is vast and many of his songs have gone on to be covered by artists all over the world.

“It is a tribute concert to Eric in a way,” said David Woodside, member of the Orange Male Voice Choir.

“Eric came to Australia in ‘69, so 50 years he has been playing and singing folk music in Australia and most of it his own

compositions… We thought it would be really great to arrange some of Eric’s music and do a tribute to him at this stage of his career.”

The Orange Male Voice Choir has long included Bogle’s touching anthem “Shelter” in their repertoire and they have been enjoying the process of bring more of his work into the choral medium.

“A lot of his songs they are almost like anthems to Australia and his love of the people, the bush, the landscapes,” said choir conductor Barry Patterson.

“He is a social commentator as well as a larrikin, satirist — he does it all. And that is what is so wonderful about his music; that he can cross so many emotional spectrums.”

The Friday night performance at the Bloomfield Hall will be a “cabaret” style event, with seating at table of eight with a light supper included.

Saturday will see Bogle and the choir perform in the Orange Civic Theatre, with Bogle performing an extra solo set.

“It will be more of a concert,” said Barry, “where the Friday is a bit more laidback and we are actually going to interview and have a chat with Eric onstage.”

Bogle’s music is being arranged for the Orange Male Voice Choir by well-known Australian multi-instrumentalist and composer Paul Jarman, who will also be guest conductor at both performances.

“Paul is a national icon in the choral world and like Eric, they both write about our history and culture and bring an Australian flavour to life through their music and lyrics,” said Barry.

“Yes, it is a great double coup, really, to have them both here to work together in Orange and to work with us at the same time,” said David.

Eric Bogle will be performing with the Orange Male Voice Choir on Friday, November 8 and the Bloomfield Hall and Saturday November 9, at the Orange Civic Theatre, 7pm for a 7.30 start. Tickets $60 at Ticketek.

Earlier this week Orange Christian School hosted a ‘STEAM Day’ (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics), inviting Clergate Public School, Cumnock Public School, Mullion Creek and Spring Hill Public School along to participate.

The Central West STEAM Day aims to inspire and engage students through activities that are hands-on and are rich tasks that develop knowledge, skills and understanding in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects as part of the University of Sydney STEM Teacher Enrichment Academy.

Year 5 and 6 students from each school participated in the activities to complete a reflection on the 21st Century skills: collaboration, communication, creative and critical thinking.

Andrew at Parliament at the announcement of the extension to the FHA and the Minister for Agriculture Bridget McKenzie and the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack.

The Australian Government has introduced improvements to the Farm Household Allowance (FHA) which will help more farmers through periods of hardship.

This will see more than 30,000 farmers able to access this cash support, helping to put food on the table and diesel in the ute.

The changes extend farming families’ access the FHA from three years in their lifetime to four years out of every 10, recognising that farmers experience hardships, including droughts, more than once in their lives.

Moreover, the Bill will also allow farmers to receive the FHA payment four years in every decade; make it easier for more farmers to access the payment by lifting the amount families can earn off-farm to $100,000 a year; and allow farmers to count income from agistment against their losses.

These changes reflect the nature of contemporary farming businesses – by recognising the reality that much of the income earned off-farm goes straight to servicing debt rather than putting food on the table.

A GREAT DAY AT LYNDHURST

Our farming families don’t need to be worrying about how to pay the bills and feeding their families whilst they are struggling to feed their livestock and making tough decisions about their long-term future.

For those coming off the FHA after four years, there is a a one-off drought relief payment of up to $13,000 for a farming family, and up to $7,500 for an individual will be made available within six weeks of application.

The FHA has been supporting Australian farmers since July 2014. It has paid more than $365 million to farmers in that time.

The national drought relief effort now exceeds $7.3billion – the largest in history.

As I’ve said to our party room and to Parliament many times, drought support needs to be continually ramped up as conditions worsen.

It was a pleasure to visit the annual Lyndhurst Village Market and Fair Day on Saturday.

The Village Committee do a wonderful job and I got to see the new fencing and seating that has recently been installed at the Rec Ground through the Australian Government’s Drought Communities program via Blayney Shire Council. All the work was carried out by locals!

Another highlight was richly deserving Richard Bloomfield being awarded life membership of the Lyndhurst Rural Fire Brigade.

A great day at Lyndhurst and congratulations to the Village Committee and Blayney Council on a job well done!

Our community museums are not only a fantastic place to preserve the history of our community, they are vibrant places and great tourism attractions in our small towns across the region.

Which is why I was so pleased to officially open the refurbished buildings at Golden Memories Millthorpe Museum on Friday.

The organisation received $136,300 in funding from the Federal Drought Communities Program and a further $8500 in other funding to help with air conditioning.

I want to commend Blayney Shire Council for the great job they have done in administering the $1 million in Drought Communities Funding, of which this was a project.

It has provided economic stimulus to the Blayney Region - keeping money flowing around the community during these dry times.

SHOP RE-OPENS Most people are aware of the wonderful ham, pork and bacon products produced by Trunkey Bacon and Pork, they’re a favourite at local farmers markets and Ashcroft’s IGA Supermarkets among other places.

There’s now another place where you can pick up Trunkey products, they’ve re-opened their shop in Endsleigh Ave next to Bobeldyks Furniture One. It’s been closed for a while but it’s now open again between 9 and 4 each weekday and all your favourite Trunkey products can be picked up there, plus a few new ones.

2 minutes, 2 hours…what next ?

How fast is fast? Last week, we saw some REALLY fast movers.

As always, one Sunday in October is usually reserved for petrolheads to sit on the lounge chair in front of the television for about 6 and a ½ hours and ‘drive’ the 1000km of the Bathurst endurance race. For those not in the know (but how could you be in that category?), that seems like a really long time. It’s not. It goes fast, really fast.

Just like the drivers and their machines.

They move fast, really fast.

How fast, you may ask? Well, I believe that at least one of the vehicles was clocked at 301km/h on the fastest part of the track, toward the bottom of Conrod Straight. The lap record in a ‘Supercar’ now sits at a smidge over 2 minutes. To be exact, it’s 2:03.3783s, and all those little fractions of a second are really important. One lap of the mountain is 6.213km, and it’s very uphill and downhill if you’ve never watched. Some quick math will see an average speed on a lap of about 181km/h. That’s simply astonishing.

I don’t think regular Joe would even know what it was like to travel at 181km/h in a car, let alone at the top speed of over 300 clicks. It won’t be long before those Supercars (Fords, Holdens and Nissans) can do it under 2 mins. Last year an Audi R8 cracked that barrier. That track out there at Bathurst is as smooth as baby’s bottom, if you’ll pardon the expression. It needs to be otherwise things might not be pretty. I guess we’ll never get to experience that smoothness on some of the roads in Orange (hello, Icely Road, I feel your pain), maybe it’s kept full of pot holes to keep us to fifty – tricky.

We all know the fastest runner in history is Usain Bolt. He’s one of my sporting heroes. He runs the 100m at a warp-speed-like pace of over 37½ km/h for that distance. Whoosh. At the bit where he’s at his peak speed (about the 70m mark) he’s at about 46k’s, remember he’s on a standing start, so he’d get booked in a school zone if he ran through there at 3pm!!

Slow down buddy when training on Byng or Kite street at that time. Usain can only keep that up for a very short distance though. Sooner or later, someone is going to better his mark of 9.58 seconds, but we must be getting close to the limit of what a human can achieve. Or so you’d think. Last weekend, Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya ran a full marathon in less than 2 hours.

Sure, it was a bit of a setup to break the magical barrier – he had ‘pacers’, a laser pointer showing him how fast he needed to run, drinks fed to him on the run, and a special track and shoes to get the job done. But he did it. The first person. Like landing on Mars, they say.

Ok … maths. He’s running for 2 solid hours at a speed of over 21km/h. Just for perspective (no arguments please), an average Joe/Joanne would run a ‘Parkrun’ at about 12km/h. This guy also holds the ‘real’ world marathon record (2:01.39) and he just smashed the 2 hour barrier in this unofficial way for giggles. If Usain could run a marathon at his speed, he’d knock it over in 1 hour and 7 minutes, so I guess were not done yet with the limits of endurance.

Just watching the lap record at Bathurst get smashed and then the marathon record get obliterated was enough to tire me out. Wow. Can’t wait until Sunday in October 2020 …

The 3rd Orange Record Fair is back and will again be held in the CWA Hall in Robertson Park on Saturday 9th November.

Over the past two years thousands of music lovers have descended on the hall, enjoying the experience of stepping into a record store with over 10,000 Records, CD’s, DVD’s and collectables to dig through. The prices for Records, CDs and DVDs will be starting from $2, so there will be plenty of opportunity for everyone regardless of your budget. This is also your opportunity to find those harder to find albums you’ve been looking for. Giving you the chance to check their condition out before parting with your money, instead of having to chance it online or travel 3 hours to Sydney for some crate digging.

If you have friends or relatives that love their music and you are wondering what to get them for Christmas, this is a chance to find something different. There will also be assorted collectables, retro clothing and books to go through.

The Orange Record Fair also provides local artists with their own albums an opportunity to connect with music lovers and present their music to them via short personal appearances on stage. Kris Schubert from the Safety of Life at Sea (who performed a cracking set at the inaugural fair) will be popping in to promote a very special album which he has produced “Dreaming of a Green Christmas”. A collection of songs about what Christmas means to 18 artists from their end of the telescope here in the Central West.

The 100 Mile Groove will be spinning deep cuts from Vinyl of Classic Albums, Forgotten Gems to New Releases, including Andy Nelson from Bathurst stunning Debut “Man on The Mountain”.

The eye-catching artwork for the Orange Record Fair featuring the CWA Hall was created by Orange Comic book artist Hugh McKinnon whose work will be available on the day as well.

Our My Job - My Day feature is generally about local people who have interesting or highly responsible jobs but this week I’m going well beyond that, in fact it’s about someone who lives in Scotland.

eaders would be aware that my wife and I have just done a 13 night cruise to New Zealand on the Majestic Princess to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary. More about cruise life later but for now, let me just tell you about a wild idea I had after being at sea for only a day or two. I thought…I wonder if the Captain might let me do a brief interview with him. I pondered the idea and how I could approach him, and all it took was a handwritten note which I left with Guest Services. A day or so later I took a call in our Stateroom accepting my offer, and not only that but offering to give us a tour of the bridge as well. Wow! I thought.

have been more obliging or friendly, my wife and I had a wonderful relaxed chat with him in his executive quarters and came away feeling extremely honoured. His name is Craig Street.

First a bit of background.

It’s the biggest ship in the Princess fleet but that will only be for a short time as a brand-new bigger ship is about to join the Princess fleet.

The Majestic weighs about 70,000 tons and has 1350 crew members who hail from some 62 countries. It’s 330 metres long and has about 1600 passenger cabins which can accommodate 4450 passengers.

Tell me about your job?

I’m the Captain but one of two Captains on board this particular cruise. I’m responsible for the whole operation of the ship, everything from navigating the ship, that is manouvering the boat, to making sure passenger expectations are met at every level. Basically, I’m over everything that happens. I have an executive team of 12 directly under me, each of these has more specific responsibilities such as in catering, entertainment, engineering, cleaning, medical and so on, it then flows on down from there. Every day presents new challenges, and these can involve port issues, weather issues, staff issues, administrative issues and so on.

My regular work hours are 7.30am to 6.30pm, 7 days a week but I’m on call 24 hours a day.

This is actually my last cruise on the Majestic Princess. I’ve Captained this ship since it was launched two and a half years ago and I’m moving to the Royal Princess which will be doing cruises to Alaska in Summer and Mexico in Winter.

What does a typical day look like for you?

No day is ever the same. Supervising the navigational team, managing staff, the commercial running of the ship, dealing with staff issues, and with 1350 crew these can be numerous and varied, and then of course there are training sessions, crew meetings and various duties hosting and entertaining passengers for various reasons. Today is different again,

Craig has been with Princess Cruises for 29 Years; he joined the Princess Fleet as a Deck Cadet in 1990 and after serving as an apprentice qualified as 3rd Officer in 1993. Since then he has worked his way up through the ranks, obtained his master’s License in 1999 and first took command of the Star Princess in 2008.

He has previously been in command of 11 of the Princess Ships including the Royal Princess and Regal Princess, sister ships to the Majestic Princess.

Craig was raised in Edinburgh, Scotland and lives there with his Canadian wife Leanne. They have a sailboat on the West Coast of Scotland

Tell me about how your holidays, work and what you do for enjoyment at sea?

I work 3 months about. 3 months at sea and then 3 months holidays. In between there are regular and continuous training courses that I attend. With regard to what I do at sea for enjoyment, my wife regularly travels with me and we enjoy playing tourist and doing things together, not unlike our passengers.

Still yes, but we’re covered under the UK Registry, so some weddings are just symbolic weddings. I am performing a ceremony tonight for a couple who are renewing their vows.

At 17, I did a course with no real plans and here I am 29 years later still here. I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I think the people I work with are a highlight and the people who you meet along the way. I have even met up with people who sailed with me 10 years earlier.

Any memorable moments that stand out?

Meeting my wife. I met my wife on a cruise on the Caribbean Princess 13 years ago, she was a scuba diving instructor. She’s Canadian and we share a love of scuba diving, among other things and we love visiting her family in Canada, which we do often.

And finally, do you have a favourite Country and City from your travels?

Country would have to be French Polynesia and Sydney - sailing in and out of Sydney Harbour never fails to impress!

I hope you enjoyed meeting Captain Street, albeit briefly, and should you be fortunate enough to travel with him on the Royal Princess sometime, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to meet him as we were. It certainly was an unexpected highlight and privilege for my wife Jackie and me.

We will all have to wait two weeks to get our hands on another delicious chicken schnitzel burger from the Little Snack Shack, but owners Garry and Regina Kearl promise the new food court refit will be worth the wait.

After more that 20 years in its current location, iconic Orange City Centre fast food eatery The Little Snack Shack is on the move. With the Orange City Centre renovations nearing completion, the Little Snack Shack will be temporarily shutting down from October 31, reopening in their new food court location next month.

“We are all supposed to be reopening mid-November; it is going to be fantastic,” said Regina Kearl, who is excited about their new location in the revamped section of the Orange City Centre.

“We have had 20 years of people saying to us “where can we sit to eat?” so to have the food court is going to be wonderful… over 200 seats I think, and there’ll be a playground right next to us for the kids…

“And it will look amazing! People will be surprised by how classy it all looks.

It is going to be beautiful!

Garry and Regina bought the Little Snack Shack back in July 1999 and have remained one of just a handful of food vendors in the CBD shopping centre.

“The business is one of the originals in the Centre — Angela’s Country Gourmet, it was called and then became the Little Snack Shack six months before we bought it,” said Regina.

“When we bought it, it had rabbit traps and barbed wire and all this stuff hanging off it! So it has had a few different makeovers over the years.”

Garry and Regina may have seen plenty of changes in the shopping centre over the last two decades, but some things always remain the same.

“Schnitzel rolls with lettuce and mayo were really popular 20 years ago and they still are today. Chips with chicken salt, chicken chippies, hamburgers, bacon and egg rolls — those staples just haven’t changed at all,” said Regina.

“But the thing that sticks out to me the

most is that we are now serving children of the children we used to serve!

And some of the kids that started with us at 14, who worked with us right through their university studies, now they are bringing their babies in! It is amazing; we’ve seen lots of changes!”

When the Little Snack Shack reopens next month, Regina assures us that all your fast food favourites will be back along with some new tasty offerings.

“We are going to really push our burgers a lot more. We have always sold burgers, but the menu will be a lot more prominent towards our burgers, but other than that we will stay the same,” said Regina.

“We really want to thank our customers for the last 20 years and let them all know that even though we are moving and we are going to look different, we are still the Little Snack Shack! Nothing is changing, but our location!”

How to get the BEST out of OUR COUNCILS with AMANDA SPALDING

COMMUNITY COMMITTEES

Are Community Committees a good thing or a bad thing?

Councillor Joanne McRae has proposed a Notice of Motion for the Orange City Council meeting on Tuesday 22nd October requesting information about Councillor training; Councillor attendance records for various meetings and the timely completion of Declarations of Interest documentation. One of the issues is about Councillor attendance at Community Committee meetings.

Orange City Council has more than 20 Community Committees, which meet at a variety of intervals including quarterly, bi-monthly or when required. Council’s website explains their purpose: ‘Council wants to hear from community members who are interested in serving on a Community Committee. There are currently more than twenty community committees. These small groups provide a source of information and discussion to feed into the decision-making of Orange City Council.’

Blayney Shire Council has 9 ‘Section 355 Committees’ through which a Committee

of Council exercises its functions on Council’s behalf.

1. Access Advisory Committee 2. Audit and Risk Management Committee 3. Australia Day Committee 4. Financial Assistance Program Advisory Committee 5. Sports Council 6. Cemetery Forum 7. Blayney Shire Tourism, Town and Villages Committee 8. Cultural Centre Working Group 9. Blayney Shire Floodplain Management Committee I have searched Cabonne Council’s website and it appears to have 3 community committees: Australia Day Awards; Heritage Working Party and Tourism Advisory Committee.

I worked at a relatively small Council in Sydney (which will remain nameless) that had some 53 community committees meeting on a monthly basis. I was asked to undertake a review. In my report to

Council I concluded that the number of committees and the frequency of their meetings was creating a large burden for the staff in preparing agendas and minutes and attending meetings, and the benefits of having many of these committees was outweighed by the cost of the resources being used in servicing them. There was a somewhat cynical view that the purpose of the Committees was to keep the Councillors busy and away from important matters, but that may have been a ‘Yes, Minister’ type of conspiracy theory!

The Terms of Reference were not consistent between the Committees and some of the committee members did not understand their role or comply with the Code of Conduct as they were directing Council staff, which is not allowed.

The Council decided to standardise the Terms of Reference, train Committee members in their obligations, and reduce the number of Community (S355) Committees to 17 meeting quarterly.

Orange City Council’s Community

Strategic Plan includes the following objective and strategies.

Objective 14: An informed community 14.1. Deliver communication that is open, accessible, meaningful and regular across a range of media 14.2. Promote organisational culture that delivers excellent customer service and continuous improvement 14.3. Provide opportunities for widespread and quality engagement, and where appropriate, shared decision making.

I see from the Delivery Program and Operational Plan that it is the responsibility of the Manager of Community Governance to review the Community Committees each year, so will look out for the next review.

I would be interested to hear from community members of the committees as to whether they think that they fulfil their purpose of ‘a source of information and discussion to feed into the decision-making of Orange City Council.’

Annual Charity Day Photos by EdithMay Gowing The Ionian Club of Orange held its annual Charity Day on Thursday 10th November at Duntryleague Golf Club. This year Country Education of Australia (Orange Branch) was chosen from the 4 Charities that applied to be the Charity of the year to receive assistance form the Ionian Club.

County Education of Australia support disadvantaged county school leavers with a wide range of scholarships, grants and bursaries. Students can apply for financial help with education and employment expenses, Apprenticeships, Traineeships, Cadetships, Diplomas and certificate level studies, University qualification, accommodation cost, books and travel expenses.

The Charity day is a fun day with various raffles and stalls with home made cakes, slices, biscuits and confectionary on offer, along with craft, produce, eggs, plants, DVDs and books. They also had entertainment from a member of the upcoming production of “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Nicole Wright the manager of the Orange branch of the Country Education of Australia was the guest speaker for the day.

This weekend the, Scouts Australia NSW Air Activities Centre are coming to Orange to get local children up in the air and up to speed on just what aviation is all about.

B

ased at Camden Airport, the Scouts Australia NSW Air Activities Centre owns four Cesna 172 aircraft and every year gives thousands of children the chance to get airborne.

“Our planes are maintained by scouts and our pilots also are all volunteers, in fact they contribute to the cost of taking the kids up,” said Country Activities Coordinator for the Scouts Australia NSW Air Activities Centre, Leon Harris.

“There’s no other way, that I am aware, where kids can go up and learn about aviation. Gone are the days when you were on a domestic or an international flight and you could ask to go up to the flight desk… all you are doing now is flying in an aluminium

cigar, so this gives kids a chance to find out what it is all about.”

Several times a year, Scouts Australia NSW Air Activities Centre extend their program to a regional area and they will be bringing two of their aircraft to Orange this weekend.

“We will be there for two days and probably be able to have 120-odd kids to go for a flight,” said Leon. “But not just a flight, they’ll learn about aeroplanes, what makes them fly, they get shown all the moving components, all the parts… so it gives them an understanding about aviation.”

Sine the Air Activity Centre started in 1972, more than 60 thousand Scouts and Girl Guides have been through their program, with over 500 getting their pilot’s licences and going on to have careers in the industry.

The Air Activities Centre pilots are being hosted by the 3rd Orange Scout Group and the Orange Aero Club. They will be running their program on Saturday and Sunday from 8.30 to 4pm (weather dependant).

“We invite anybody who has any interest, whether it be getting involved in Scouts or seeing what we do in Aviation, please come on out,” said Leon.

“Show up at the aerodrome on the day and we can show them through the aircraft and the aerodrome. There’ll be the local scout leaders from Orange, so people can see what scouting is all about. It is not just about campfires or tying knots, there is much more than that.”

CWA at the Field Days 2019 will again see fresh scones served with a smile from the ladies of the Central Western Group CWA in the Style Pavilion at the Australian National Field days on 24th 25th& 26th October. The Central Western Group have been serving tea and scones at the field days since 1987 when they were first invited to attend.

The very popular cooking demonstrations will be held at 11.45am and 1.45pm daily where we will be featuring our primary product for this year, Honey, tasting samples will be available.

CWA cookbooks along with jams, relish’s and chutneys will be available for sale, and why not purchase one of our CWA shopping bags to carry all your purchases and help reduce the use of plastic in the community.

Funds raised will go towards our annual grant awarded to the Most Deserving 4th year Apprentice employed through the SkillSet network.

I took these photos on the cruise ship we travelled on to NZ recently. The ship is the Majestic Princess and is the biggest ship in the Princess Cruises fleet. It carries around 5000 passengers and crew and it’s big! My photos show the ship, the bridge area and a small stick on one of the consoles, the stick is about 5cm high and you can steer the ship with it. I found that amazing?

It is totally understandable that thoughtful people find the gospel of Jesus Christ hard to believe. But often the difficulties are with the wrong things. Many can’t believe that Jesus rose physically from the dead. Or the virgin birth. Or that Jesus walked on water, fed more than 5,000 people from a lunch box, raised the dead, etc. But in fact the truly supreme mystery with which the gospel confronts us is not any of these, but the Christmas message of incarnation - the claim that Jesus was God

in man form and that he took on humanity without any loss of his divinity. But once the incarnation is grasped as a reality the other difficulties dissolve away. It is no wonder at all that if Jesus was both fully human and fully divine, fresh acts of creative power would have marked his entry into the world, his life in it, and his exit from it. Once we grant that Jesus was divine, it becomes unreasonable to find difficulty in any of his other claims, in fact the incarnation makes sense of them all.

THUMBS DOWN to the drivers who are at the first set of traffic lights when leaving Woolworths North Orange Shopping Centre who are in the left turn only lane (that goes to

McDonalds) who then precede to go straight ahead towards the Northern Distributor. This action will cause an accident. I have had someone go straight ahead nearly running into me at least three times. If you want to turn left onto the Distributor you need to be in the lane closest to the shopping centre then veer across just before the second set of lights. Be careful what lane you pick.

SMALL ACRES CYDER Sparkling 2019

Small Acres offers up their medal winning Sparkling for this week’s Cheers, and it comes in two varieties! The cider tastes of apple notes combined with biscuity complexity and has a dry finish. Serve chilled as an apertif, with a selection of seafood. The perry, made from 100% fresh pressed pear, brings that pear flavour and aroma to the fore with a clean, crisp medium dry finish, perfect with a pear and walnut salad and both sparkling excel in livening a party, celebration or fun occasion.

The hand production (using the same Method Traditional) that wine makers use to produce sparkling wine is what sets these drinks apart. After maturing on lees each bottle is hand riddled, disgorged, and then in bottle conditioned for at least 18 months.

Small Acres Cyder is no stranger to awards, and a recent swag of medals have been awarded to them from the Sydney Royal Beer and Cider Awards including “Champion Bottle Conditioned Cider or Perry” for their Cat’s Pyjamas (which we’ve featured previously in Cheers) and two silvers for the sparkling Cider and Perry presented today.
