Well it’s that time of the year again when a lot of thanking and wishing goes on, and rightly so.

On behalf of my beautiful and supportive wife Jackie, myself and our wonderful team here at OCL, let me say a huge thank you to all those who have contributed in some way to what we do here each week. The number of people who play a part in producing and delivering Orange City Life week after week is quite extensive, it includes some people who most readers would even know about. I won’t mention them all but a few in the background that I would like to acknowledge include EdithMay Gowing and Cec Tilburg, these two ladies have been faithfully doing our social photography for quite some time and it’s a job that requires heart, commitment and skill qualities that both have in abundance. Also, Peter Baker and Chris Smith who are up in the wee hours each Thursday morning delivering our magazines to around 80 places all over Orange, Millthorpe and Blayney, amazing and loyal commitment from both these guys. I’d also like to mention Paul Tierney who’s just racked up his 500th column for us. Paul’s columns are a highlight in our magazine for lots or readers each week and his take on all things life is very entertaining to say the very least. Thanks Paul!

Of course, without both readers and advertisers we couldn’t exist, thankfully we have a great number of both who have supported, encouraged and sometimes admonished us when appropriate. It’s obvious that many people respect or value what we do, and many show this by caring for or about us in a variety of ways. Thanks to all who have contributed as one of these in so many ways, be assured you’re appreciated!

Exactly when ‘Carol Bombing’ started in Orange, Megan Hodsdon, is not entirely sure, but for the last decade she has been carrying on the tradition and bringing a little surprise holiday cheer to people’s doorsteps.

“It started out as a Salvation Army thing many, many years ago,” said Megan, a music teacher who runs the City of Orange Brass Band’s training band.

“We have a lot of people in the Salvation Army Corp that can’t get to town to hear Carols by Candlelight, so one night close to Christmas we’ll take the Corp bus with all our instruments and go around to people’s houses, stand on their front lawn and play a couple of carols for them.”

The surprise performances would often be met with tears and were always well received. Enjoying her own ‘Carol Bombing’ experiences so much, Megan decided to get her students involved.

“It was such a beautiful evening, people would get really emotional at us coming out and we just had a ball, travelling

around on a bus with all your mates and playing music,” she said.

“I thought if the adults love doing this, the kids are going to absolutely love doing it! So, we borrow the Salvation Army bus, put ten kids in the back, we dress up our driver as Santa and we just drive around to people’s houses, give them a present and we play some Christmas carols!”

The people they visit are usually chosen for their community work, as Megan sees it as a way to say thank you to people who do so much for others.

“I email a lot of community leaders that I know and ask who has worked really hard and hasn’t been noticed. I’m really big on people who haven’t been noticed for what they’ve done,” said Megan.

“Last year we went to the police station,

...people would get really emotional at us coming out and we just had a ball, travelling around on a bus with all your mates and playing music...

which was the highlight, they let us into their offices and the kids went around to all the officers to say thank you for the job you do and then played jingle bells for them.

“And because we are musicians, I like to get around to the Eisteddfod committee because they’ve given us so much with the Eisteddfod that it is nice to say thank you.”

This year, Megan has organised three separate Carol Bombing nights and she never has trouble filling spaces on the bus.

“The kids love and they all want to go to all of them but I had to put the message out that a brass ensemble playing carols on your lawn says thank you, but 100 piece brass band says something entirely different!”

OUR 2020 COMMUNITY PROJECT Each year, Orange City Life likes to set ourselves a Community Project. Over the last few years our Community Projects have enabled a well to be put down in a community in Zimbabwe where the locals previously had to travel 5kms just to access drinking water, also we donated several thousand dollars to a school called the Miracle School in Pakistan, this school helps care for and educate children who are forced to work as slaves in brick kilns.

MEGAN “When I was in Year 2, we were taken up to an assembly and watched our primary school band and I was just blown away by it! I watched the Cornet player, watched her fingers, remembered her fingers, so that when I got my own cornet, I could learn to do it. I was just obsessed with it!

I joined the school band in Year 3 and played ever since! I started on Cornet, played Baritone for a year, then on to Euphonium, French horn and then everything else from

there.

I like playing in concert bands and brass bands; bands are friendly places. I have played in orchestras, but you play mostly indoor concert.

I love getting out and playing at the shows, playing parks in the rotundas — I just love that you are in front of an audience, it is all informal and you are playing with friends.

After I had kids I kind of ended up in teaching accidently. I’ve probably taught in every school

in town at some point and I do a lot of private teaching. I also run the City of Orange Brass Band’s intermediate and beginner bands.

I love seeing kids going from thinking, ‘this instrument is big and scary’ to ‘Wow! I’ve done my first performance!’

“Christmas is the best because every single night I’m out somewhere carolling! Every night you are going out with your friends and doing the thing you love the most. It’s good fun!”

This year our Community Project has been closer to home and we called it Put Orange First. Our aims were to support and encourage local small business owners, particularly retailers, encourage locals to want to shop and do business with local businesses before going elsewhere, and to generally help us all to appreciate what we have here in Orange and to support and look after it. This project has seen a lot of progress be made during the year, but any real benefits may not be seen for some time yet. One outcome we achieved was a group called Put Orange First was established early in the year and this group has been meeting and working every week throughout 2019 to try and get a few things happening. The enthusiasm among this group has been amazing but they’ve found the things they wanted to do didn’t happen as quickly as they would have liked.

The group established very clear goals right from the beginning and is committed to seeing them through, so Put Orange First will continue to meet throughout 2020 and keep working on the various projects they have on their agenda.

For 2020, I’ve decided to again stay closer to home and make our Community Project a local one. We’ll call it “Local Media is Best”.

I’m of the opinion that our local media has a major role to play in the way our community functions and the way we all feel about things generally. Those who read my comments regularly will be well aware that I’ve thought for some time that many of our local media outlets are now letting us down very badly in certain areas. I won’t go into that here, but I will say that in keeping with our mission statement of bringing out the best in people, we’ll be focussing on how our media serves us throughout 2020, and of course what we do here at Orange City Life will be part of that. I believe that if our local media has our City’s best interests at heart, they’d report and do things a bit differently. By differently, I don’t necessarily mean they shouldn’t report news accurately and truthfully, but rather that they should report news fairly and in a more balanced way so as not to simply stir people up with clever words, headlines etc. It’s not what they say, it’s the way they say it sometimes that concerns me.

Of course, that’s only part of it, another objective follows on a bit from last year’s project Put Orange First. Here in Orange there are several genuinely local media outlets like Orange City Life, and we’ll be telling our readers more about them and why we should all support them more, as well.

So that’s our Community Project for 2020, time will tell how well it goes.

History about History being made — VINCE LOVECCHIO, CREATIVE DIRECTOR WRITES: — Vince and Paul would like give a big end-ofyear shout-out to our wonderful network of schools, museums, and historical societies, and to each of the amazing communities that have been involved in yet another big year of History Here films. We feel very privileged to have this opportunity to work with schools and communities across regional NSW to unearth and interrogate local stories and micro-histories, research, brainstorm, script and film to create quality short films.

Highlights this year included winning the 2019 National Museums and Galleries Award (MAGNA) and receiving a Highly Commended (2nd place) in the 2019 IMAGinE State Awards. These awards came on the back of our 2018 success with History Here capturing a National Trust Heritage Award. Another big stand out was our broadcast 'Bigger than Ben Hall' featuring our schools’ films which won

us the MAGNA award.

We have been awarded a fresh round of Community Heritage funding and are busy growing the program into 2020, creating a new series of historical-comedy films with schools across Central and Far-Western NSW. None of which would have been possible without the abundance of enthusiasm, talent and commitment these young people bring to our projects.

We aim to redress and rebalance accepted versions of Australian History Here by focussing on Wiradyuri stories, women’s’ stories (through an off-shoot of History Here called History Her) and migrant stories, including colonial Chinese history. This will be the continued focus of our work in 2020.

We would like to thank all the hard-working, students, teachers, and parents who have greatly assisted in the frenetic schools-based

activities that ultimately become the History Here films.

Many thanks to the Department of Education’s videoconference hub, DART Connections, and in particular David Foley, whose generous technical support and visionary application of technology allows us to reach rural and remote schools via videoconference, to develop scripts, discuss logistics of filming, and catch up after the projects have finished.

As always, we’d like to thank the Bathurst Wiradyuri and Aboriginal Community Elders group for their deadly advice and assistance in all things cultural, especially when it comes to redressing the shocking social imbalances between Aboriginal and nonAboriginal Australia and trying to close the gap. We could not have made inroads into this area without the wisdom and advice of the Elders.

Mr Weeks said the new Innovation Centre was made possible with the generous investment by the College Foundation and Federal Government funding who can see the value of the new Innovation Centre, not just for regional NSW education but a best practice model in building future ready learners for the country.

The Innovation Centre is modelled on a US prototype and will be a purpose-built building covering 600 square metres in size to accommodate spacious, open plan and interactive learning spaces incorporating six distinct (but not exclusive) Learning Labs focussing on: 1. D esign – explores the world of engineering, manufacturing, robotics, artificial intelligence 2. Bodies – explores the world of health care, medicine, wellness 3. The Spirit of Christmas — BOB HOLLAND —

Christmas is a time for spreading goodwill and I think it’s fair to say that it happens more around Christmas than at any other time of the year. Part of spreading this goodwill is done in the form of greetings and wishes, but it’s mainly in the form of giving gifts, and these gifts take a variety of forms. It’s all part of the Christmas tradition.

So, what to give?

Times are such that even something as simple and heartwarming as giving a gift to a loved one or friend can now be quite stressful. What started with a simple notion of 'it’s the thought that counts,' has evolved into something far more complicated, or so it seems. We are a nation of great wealth and in 2019, most of us have far more than we need so choosing gifts has become so much more difficult. In many cases I’m sure a lot of people feel that buying gifts in today’s world starts from a premise of “how do I buy something for someone who has everything?”

People’s expectations for both giving and getting gifts have also gotten way out of whack. What to buy, how much to spend, should I buy something practical or just the usual stuff? do I give money or a gift card? do I spend the same amount on both kids? will they like this or that? and so on it goes.

That’s Australia for the most part. In some overseas countries, it’s a very different story and that’s what I’d like to focus on here.

Last week, a local Orange family decided to do something for a 4YO child who lives in poverty in the Philippines. His name is Zai and he’s just one of millions of children around the world whose circumstances are anything but what most children experience here in Australia. For some, living where there’s no clean drinking water, for others, having to work long hours as slaves in oppressive conditions just to survive, others not knowing where the next mouthful of food may come from, and so on. It all sounds so sad and, in some cases, unbelievable that anyone should have to live like that. Sad to say it does happen and it’s happening right now right across our World.

For Zai however, this Christmas is going to be very different and possibly for many more Christmases to come. Zai’s name is among many that are on a list at an organisation known as Compassion. Compassion is a Christ-centred, child-focussed, church-based organisation that among other things arranges sponsorship for poverty-stricken children like Zai, in places all over the World, so they can have a far better chance at life.

It costs $48 a month to sponsor a child like Zai through

Compassion and this sponsorship benefits not only the child but their family as well. In Zai’s case, this money will enable the staff at the Little Lambs Child Development Centre in his Country to provide him with Bible teaching, sports, medical check-ups, hygiene education, field trips, social events and literacy and maths skills development, among other things.

Saying that the sponsorship will make a life-changing difference to Zai and his family, is probably an understatement.

I said at the beginning that Christmas is a time for goodwill and that giving is a traditional part of that, this story is to encourage you to think a bit further afield and about children who may never have experienced the spirit of Christmas as we know it. I think the Orange family who has decided to sponsor Zai has done something absolutely spectacular, and they’re just one of millions of families across the world who have done similar, be it through Compassion, World Vision or another equally respected child sponsorship organisation. Thumbs up to all who sponsor such children!

It was a heart-warming scene when Principal Mrs Mac declared, “Shoes off and go and enjoy all of your hard work” as Spring Hill students ran to their Sensory Garden which was officially opened earlier this week.

This request was met with the echoes of laughter and plenty of ‘wows’ and ‘come and look at what I did.’

Principal, Mrs Mac said, “I’m incredibly proud of all of my students and their continued support and efforts in creating this amazing learning space. They put their heart and soul into it and its very much reflective of their personalities and their wonderful sense of humour. The wonderful thing is watching them at recess and lunch, they are really proud of it.

“Every child has put something into that garden, they can call it theirs and I think that is very special. We

couldn’t have done it without the wonderful help from our community and all of our volunteers, staff and grandparents. We also couldn’t have done it without a very special Teacher’s Aide, Deina Hines.

LOCAL ARTISTS ON THE HUNT FOR

EXHIBITION SPACE — JONATHAN ROE —

Orange has a strong and vibrant art community, but for many practicing artists, finding opportunities to actually exhibit their work can be a struggle.

Local painter Hank Spirek decided to take matters into his own hand and has formed a small group of like-minded artists who are now working together to get more of their work on show.

“It is really hard getting places to exhibit,” said Hank, who has been a professional artist on and off for the last 50 years.

Hank relocated to Orange two years ago and is keen to put more of his work in the public eye.

“There is a lot of competition. The few galleries that are around have their pick of who they choose, so what I decided to do was form a small group of people to work together to find exhibition space,” he said.

Already Hank and his fellow artists have leads on four possible exhibitions outside of

Orange Art Society Inc.

Orange next year, but they are really looking for affordable local spaces they could rent or businesses interested in hanging local art.

“We really would like some local places to maybe put their hand up and say, yes we’re willing to exhibit local art,” said Hank.

“Anything at all, any places we can rent or maybe wineries, businesses, restaurants… I know I have tons of work and the other artists that I’m involved in they all work steady in their art so we could exhibit in a lot of different places if we get interest.”

It’s early days yet, but if enough venues are interested, Hank is hoping his artists group can act as a way to connect artists and exhibition spaces.

“At the moment we don’t really need more artists, we need more venues. But once we

start to get a feel for how many venues are available and how well people are working together, in my mind there should be no limit to the number of people who could be involved,” said Hank, who plans to get a group website up as soon as possible.

“I see it could be like a sort of bulletin board. You put your name down that you are interested in exhibiting, you have examples of your work and then another artist says, yes I like his stuff, I’d like to exhibit with him, then we also have a list of possible venues where you could exhibit and they can make arrangements with the venue.”

Front Teeth and New Year Wishes The Queen called 1992 her ‘Annus Horribilis’, let’s hope 2020 is a better one for us.

Back then, it was all happening for The Queen. A huge number of royal scandals, involving three of her four children and their partners - current, past and ahem, well, casual. Then just when she thought things couldn’t get any worse, a massive fire at the castle in Windsor topped off her Annus Horribilis.

Issues have got to be pretty big to keep politics off the front page or out of the lead story on the TV news. This year we’ve had three concerns so enormous and life-changing that the pollies have barely got a look in (except for their inaction in some cases). I’ll mention all three of them at once, then give editorial to each of them individually. The drought, the Climate and the Fires.

A lovely young lady I know lives out near Louth, an hour further on past Bourke. Her family has a total of about 200000 acres out there (yep, you read that right), and putting it mildly, there’s not a lot of feed out there for the animals, let alone any crops. She said they are feeding the stock they have left on cotton seed, and when I naively asked if that’s what was growing on their farm, she said “no, it gets trucked in each week from Perth”.

Sigh. The vicious cycle of no water, no crops, no feed, no stock, no money, no planting looks to have no end.

In the past fortnight, we had a day in Orange where the top temp was just 11oC … in December. When I checked the weather App on my phone, it actually said “feels like -0.1o,” no joke.

Then, just a week later, we broke the

all-time December heat record by cracking out a temp of 35.7 C. Those who deny climate change will put this down to coincidence or fate, but it’s just ridiculous to ignore or fail to recognise the damage we’ve done, and that’s it’s getting hard to fix. Antonio Guterres, secretary general of the United Nations said last week that “it is almost too late” to do anything, and that if we don’t take radical, bolder action, a logical conclusion is that “we are doomed.” From plastic bags and straws, to electric cars and short showers – it’s up to all of us. The man upstairs must look down at 16 year old Time Magazine’s Person of the Year, Greta Thunberg and her crusade and ask “why is she doing more than all of the leaders?” Sigh. o

Then there’s the fires. Yep, the drought and the Climate Change seem inherently linked to our current woes with bushfires. And, like us in the Central West, if you’re not directly affected by a raging fire, then the pollution levels have everyone hiding indoors for days on end. Who would have believed we’d see everyday people wearing masks, like in China and India, when going to the shops.

The ‘Air Quality’ rating in Orange hit a ridiculously dangerous 295, just shy of ‘hazardous’, when out here it’s normally always under 50, with a rating of ‘good’. Sigh.

Like the kid who said “All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth”.

Let’s just pray for rain, do our bit for the environment, buy a bale and a parma, and maybe drop a dollar in the bucket next time you see the Firies taking up a collection (shoutout firefighters, you are awesome).

ICONIC LOCAL PUB REPAINT WINS STATE GONG — JONATHAN ROE — The recent makeover of prominent local pub, The Royal Hotel, has been recognised by the Master Painters Australia NSW Association.

At this month’s Awards of Excellence, Master Painters Australia awarded repaint by Anton Hartley, Colour City Painting, the Regional Commercial Project of the Year.

“It’s just good recognition,” said Anton. “It’s a big thing to win an award like. The boys put in the hard work, the guys who work for me, and it is good to have it come though and get that industry recognition for all the hard work and effort.”

Anton, who did his apprenticeship here in Orange, will celebrate 25 years in business in 2020. In the past few years, he has also won Master Painters Awards for Excellence for his work on the Parkview Hotel (2017) and The Greenhouse of Orange (2018).

Ok, in an ideal world, the next time you’re reading this column we’ll have had a couple of inches of rain and our Annus Horribilis will be over. Merry Christmas and (hopefully) a Very Happy 2020 for those who deserve one.

Construction got underway recently on a new medical school in Orange that will create qualified doctors who understand the specific health needs of regional communities.

The Australian Government is providing $22 million of funding to Charles Sturt University (CSU), which will run the new Joint Program in Medicine in partnership with Western Sydney

University.

The development at the Orange Campus of CSU is an important part of the medical school and will see a new Clinical Skills Education Centre developed.

Construction is expected to be completed in October 2020, with the first students expected to commence the five-year medicine course in 2021.

THANKS TO OUR BRAVE VOLUNTEERS On behalf of a grateful community, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all Rural Fire Service and other emergency services personnel for the amazing and inspiring efforts they have put in fighting fires both locally and across the state.

Many have been out for long weeks at fire fronts and many are exhausted from the long hours they are putting in.

There are numerous agencies working together including the Australian Army which has a co-ordinating officer on the ground in Lithgow. He is assisting with aerial staging on the fire ground and accommodation for weary personnel.

— MELISE COLEMAN — Last Friday, St Joseph’s Catholic School Blayney, along with many across the State, were involved with ‘Bust the Dust’, an initiative started by St John’s Primary in Trangie. The idea quite simply was to create a dance routine, to be performed on the Friday, with the aim to kick this dry spell to the curb.

The school community received quite a turn out as community members, parents, local dignitaries and servicemen/women, who in turn, joined in after a watch and learn demonstration.

Principal, Mrs Kerrie Basha said, “The energy at this school is just incredible, it’s second to none. I’m extremely proud of each and every student as this was a student initiative and they put a lot of work into the routine, because they were so excited about it, and they believed in the cause, it was no trouble for them to learn. They are very aware that they are doing it tough here, but they are also aware that we have people in other schools who are doing it more difficult than what we are. To them it’s serious... serious fun,” Kerrie laughed.

“What an amazing community this is, the generosity of this place is incredible. We are so thankful to those who came along to support our students and supporting positive mental wellbeing in young people, because it is so important.”

School Captain Zara Milligan explained, “It’s a good initiative for all of the kids and their parents that are suffering depression, because it is a really hard thing to go through and we are actually really lucky here because we aren’t too bad, where as other are doing it really tough. We just hope that we can get rain so that the drought can be broken.”

Poppie Irlam added, “It was pretty fun to be involved because you get out there and you do stuff that you wouldn’t normally do. I think all of our guests really enjoyed it, they all had a laugh after the dance and that’s what it’s about, having fun.”

Staff and Students of Anson Street School enjoyed their annual Christmas party last week as the excitement of the Christmas holidays near, with thanks to the Orange Ex-Services Club.

The Christmas Party is a tradition that has been happening for more than 38 years. Ex-services staff and Vietnam Veterans provide a BBQ that the students enjoy before Santa arrives on a fire truck with two Firemen and delivers presents to all 140 students.

What a great way of imparting joy to the students and teachers alike, acknowledging the hard work of all throughout the year.

Anson Street School Principal, Melanie Meers said, “We are so grateful to the Orange Ex-Services for hosting our Christmas Party. They were a bit worried that Santa might not be able to get here because of the fires and the fire truck being needed somewhere else. To see the joy on the faces of our students when they met Santa was priceless. We are very lucky to have such wonderful people in the community who continue to support the students.”

President of Orange Ex-Services Club, Graham Gentles added, “We enjoy the opportunity to come and help and give Anson Street School a great day.

When you’re as much involved with the community as we are, its one of those bonuses to see the kids when they arrive to all of the food that we put on and then to see their reactions when they get to see and sit with Santa, it’s great.”

Recently in Parliament I recognised the dedicated emergency service personnel who responded to the scene of a serious motor vehicle accident on the Mitchell Highway at Orange on the night of 11th October 2018. The single vehicle collision involved a truck which departed the roadway and collided with a nearby fence. The driver of the truck, who was the sole occupant, sustained life threatening injuries.

Emergency services were contacted and police arrived on scene shortly after. Senior Constables Katy Watts and Tom Martin of the Central West Police District effectively administered first aid to the injured driver. Orange Fire and Rescue attended the scene and assumed responsibility of the first aid and extraction of the driver. Station Officer Matthew Jeffery, Leading Fire Fighter David Beattie, Senior Fire Fighters Timothy Collins and James Patrech attended to first aid and extraction of the driver, ably assisted by civilians who were first on scene. Of particular note, Timothy Collins is recognised as being instrumental in providing lifesaving first aid until the driver was airlifted to hospital, managing to survive.

The actions of emergency services and civilians at this incident is commendable.

The Country Women’s Association Orange branch recently received a cheque from student performers in the Kinross Wolaroi School’s ‘Strings Program.’

Kinross Wolaroi Teacher, and Violin player herself, Lorraine Moxey explained, at the beginning of term she gave each student a new piece to learn as well as a sponsorship form.

Their task was to secure sponsorship for their performance of the assigned piece at an end of term event. “I thought that might motivate the students to keep on practising and at the same time raise money for a worthy cause.”

On December 2nd, students performed in a ‘Sponcert’ (sponsored concert) at the school in

seven-year-old students commented, it was “nice to be able to make a difference”.

The money will go to the CWA’s Disaster Fund which at present is mainly being directed to drought relief. In the past 18 months the CWA has distributed more than $14.5 million, generally in $3,000 lots, to people who are badly affected by the drought. Sadly, the need is ongoing so this recent cheque will be gratefully received.

DOUBLE THE REASONS TO JOIN CRUISIN’ ALONG DROUGHT DRIVE IN 2020 — JONATHAN ROE —

The 12th annual Cruisin’ Along charity drive in May will serve a dual purpose; raising money for Cancer research while supporting Central Western towns feeling the pinch from this sustained drought.

We certainly hope there’ll be some drought-breaking rain before the 1 May departure date of the 2020 Cruisin’ Along trip, but businesses impacted by drought will take some time to recover.

“The idea is to go through some of the smaller towns and just show them that we’re thinking of them,” said Cruisin’ Along organiser Terry Davis.

“Drought affects the farmers, but it is also the cafes and the motels and the small shops in these towns that can probably be even more affected. So, the idea is to show support by staying overnight, having meals, buying fuel and having coffee at these towns. We certainly won’t change their lives, but every little bit helps.”

The Drought Drive will leave Orange on the 1st May 2020 and stay overnight at Kandos, Wellington, Trangie, Condobolin, West Wyalong, Parkes, Grenfell and Molong, coming back to Orange on the 9th May. The drive will take in a number of small towns and villages such as Glen Alice, Geurie, Eumungerie, Albert, Peak Hill, Trundle, Bogan Gate, Gooloogong, Burcher and Cargo.

Each car joining the eight-day trip must donate $500, all of which will do towards cancer clinical trials. Participants are also encouraged to do their own fundraising and there will be raffles and auctions held at the various stopovers.

And this year, Terry said they are also offering people the chance to join them overnight of on shorter legs of the trip.

“Because it is very localised —the furthest place away would be West Wyalong — we are also looking for people to come on a one or two day trip and we’ve had quite a bit of interest in that!” said Terry, who encouraged people to get involved.

“We have great fun, there are good people, and we are all there for the same reason: to raise money for cancer clinical trials,” he said.

“And being a dual purpose fundraiser this year with the drought… people seem very interested in doing something for these communities, well here is an opportunity to take a week off or a day off and go and visit people and to show them that we are thinking of them.”

The Cruisin’ Along drive is run under the Rotary Club of Orange – Daybreak. All the money donated is given to charity.

“They can contact me either through Facebook or the website — there is an entry form on the website — but they contact me and I can tell them what it is all about.”

Over recent weeks we’ve been telling you about the community project that Ashcroft’s Supa IGA has been running to help drought affected families from schools in the Trundle and Tullamore areas. This particular appeal was run

by Ashcroft’s local charity Let’s Make Better, so it was totally a local initiative. Basically, locals had been invited to drop non-perishable grocery items into baskets at either of Ashcroft’s supermarkets in Orange, these items were then to be delivered to people affected last Monday, December 16.

I dropped by at Ashcroft’s early last Monday morning to get a picture of the truck before it left. What I was confronted with was simply incredible.

Have a guess what the financial outcome was?

Would you believe over $51,500 dollars of goods were being trucked to Trundle and Tullamore following the appeal? That’s what happened, but the scene I saw said much more than that.

There were two or three trucks, not just one, and about ten of the Ashcroft’s team including Ian and Rochelle themselves all taking part in the logistical side of packing the cartons, loading the trucks and then the actual deliveries. The spirit and enthusiasm displayed by those involved was heart-warming to say the least and I couldn’t

help but think about the generosity shown by the community in supporting the appeal. I’m told that one lady alone donated $10,000 and when Metcash, the IGA parent company heard about the appeal, they too donated 15 pallets of groceries. Looking at the pallets and pallets of goods, I couldn’t help wondering what effort it must have taken to just sort and pack the thousands of items received. Money aside, the physical effort in making this all happen must have been substantial.

Sadly though, with all the activity, and with it all happening in the early shadows of the day around their loading dock, I had to snap what I could and my photo hardly does the occasion justice. I was able to take a photo (shocker that it is – smiles aside) of some of the team with one of the trucks just after it had been loaded.

A mighty fine effort by anyone’s standards and an absolute credit to the Ashcroft’s, their team and the community for the way they responded to the plight of our neighbours a little further out west.

Seeing this unfold made me feel extra good, I hope you now feel the same way. Saying Thumbs up or Very Well Done seems hardly enough, but it will do for now.

The heritage-listed Holy Trinity Anglican Church may be fenced off for safety, but Father Mal Dunnett, wishes to assure the public that the church itself is open for business.

In late August, church leaders made the decision to fence off the 140-year-old building on the corner of Anson and Byng Streets due to an increase in incidents of slate tiles coming loose, which posed a serious hazard to people entering and leaving the church.

“It became actually quite dangerous, so we had to make sure we made it safe for everyone,” said Fr Dunnett.

Repairing the roof will cost more than $400,000, but Fr Dunnett said they are hopeful work could commence as early as March next year.

“The process that is involved in keeping a heritage-listed building up to scratch is extremely expensive so what we are doing at the moment is we are working through how that is going to happen,” he said.

“We have a proposal in with the diocese and we are very confident the proposal we have will work. So, we are very confident we can get the roof fixed and we will then be at a stage where — unless Mount Canobolas explodes — it will last another 100 years so it would well and truly outlive me!”

But with construction fencing surrounding the old church very prominent in public view, Fr Dunnett said some people have mistakenly thought the work of the church has stopped too.”

“We’ve found, with the fence around, everybody has automatically thought the church has closed down, but it has not,” he said.

“We are not only going, we are going strong! All our services are being held in the memorial hall which has been revamped quite substantially. All

our Christmas Services, everything is going ahead as per normal.”

Fr Dunnett said the work the Parish does is actually quite significant. Parish members are involved in court support, volunteering at schools and hospitals, and are partnered with Rotary to deliver school resources and build sanitary blocks for schools in the Solomon Islands.

“So, we don’t want people to think we’ve stopped any of those things; they are still happening… it has actually been quite distressing for a lot of our people, because they are being asked why did the church close down.”

How to get the BEST out of OUR COUNCILS with AMANDA SPALDING

New CEO’s Vision for Orange City I write these columns to help Bob Holland with his vision of making Orange an even better place and to help bring our Community and our Council both onto the same page over important issues more often. Council and certain parts of the Community are often on different pages, so to speak. In many cases, this is probably due to one or both parties not having all the facts or information about a particular issue, and then firing off through the media, on social media or through some other means that simply stirs people up unnecessarily and divides our community. We, the community, can do a lot more to help our Councils to serve us better, and through this column on ‘How to get the best out of our Councils’ I aim to provide and explain facts.

David Waddell became Orange City Council’s Chief Executive Officer in September 2019 and I asked him if he would set out his vision for Orange City, which he was pleased to do.

‘My focus in 2020 is setting up Orange for the future population to 2036; to some extent modernising the city and infrastructure, including social infrastructure, will have a big focus in 2020. We will do everything in our power to facilitate business and economic development within the constraints on us.

Some of those constraints, of course, being water, water, water.’ David said.

‘Openness and transparency has been a big focus of mine since taking the job. I am focussed on making progress towards the Community Strategic Plan, which sets out the community’s priorities. Council has held forums on water and business and a housing one was held on Monday as we are in the process of developing a Housing Strategy for 2020 – 2036, and have serious issues with affordable housing. We are also developing an Industrial and Employment lands Strategy through to 2036. 2020 is an election year, so we will usually see some aspirational ideas and thinking coming out of the Council. Council’s Procurement Strategy to increase local purchasing is

open for community comment until the end of January 2020.’

‘Orange needs an additional 250 houses a year. The Shiralee estate is taking off and North Clergate has been approved by council for 450 houses. For Industrial Land we are master planning the saleyards and have bought land on Clergate Road to serve as another industrial estate. We are planning for the expansion of the North Orange shopping precinct and are looking at the concepts of Food processing Hubs and Tech Hubs for start ups.

My priorities are: CBD Plan and general City Beautification ‘We have been working on a CBD Masterplan for our Future City to refresh the CBD for some time and that will go out for community engagement early in 2020.

We have been upgrading the lighting and this will continue. We are looking at how we link the new Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to the CBD, and the use of the western end of the old hospital site for medium density housing, which we have already consulted the community on. There is interest in the old Department of Primary Industries building, and it looks as if car dealers may move to the Gateway Industrial Estate freeing up

Education, Medical and Sporting Infrastructure ‘Council is working with CSU on the delivery of the $22 million Murray-Darling Medical School and with the Department of Education about the need for new schools in Orange. The private hospital at Bloomfield is opening as part of the Life Sciences Activation Precinct and Council is developing masterplans for the whole Bloomfield precinct. Council has recently approved the location of the proposed $25 million sporting stadium at Bloomfield.

Tourism ‘Orange 360 is very successful in attracting some 1.2 million visitors a year.

We are seeing job growth from Newcrest Mining, and have the Day on the Green festival in February to look forward to.

Tourism keeps on giving.

Infrastructure ‘There is of course a major emphasis on our water security as we continue to grow.

We are working on energy affordability

and greening the City. Roads are always an issue and our priorities are the Southern Feeder Road, William Maker Roundabout and Ploughmans lane.

Social Infrastructure including sport and culture The Cricket Centre of Excellence at Wade Park will be underway soon. We are building a new animal shelter, redeveloping a scout camp, expanding the Art Gallery and perhaps aquatic centre. Procurement has started for the Robertson Park toilets and Council has received a grant of $10 million from Federal MP the Hon. Andrew Gee for the new planetarium and conservatorium.

General points Council is undertaking a review of its own property ownership to see what we should develop and what we should sell. We are looking at a stimulus building program, encouraging buy local and reviewing the levers Council has to encourage business in the CBD. One of the big issues for Council is recruiting enough planners to process DAs in a timely fashion and we are constantly working on this including using ‘para planners’ to speed up the processing as well as external consultants.’

RESCUED SUGAR GLIDERS RETURN TO THE WILD — JONATHAN ROE — Readers may remember our recent visit with WIRES volunteer Jane Passer, who was busy caring for a pair of baby sugar gliders.

We are happy to report that on Sunday, the two young brothers and a third rescued sugar glider were successfully rehomed in the wild, “It went very, very well; the three of them all went up the tree very happily and it all went smoothly,” said Jane, who was gratefully assisted by The Tree Surgeon, Bruce Smith.

“He took them ten metres up a tree and secured their box and hopefully it all goes well.

They were all living very happily together in the one box as a little family.”

Sugar gliders are highly social animals that live in small colony groups, so releasing the three young males together increases their chances of success returning to the wild.

“Definitely, they normally live in a little family group of one male, several female and babies, but when they are kicked out quite often the boys live together like a little bachelor mob until they find a lady of their own.”

Caring for young sugar gliders is no small job as it involves bottle feeding four times a day.

“But there is no rest for the wicked,” said Jane.

“This afternoon I got in a 380-gram wombat baby, so I don’t get much rest! This little one is on two-hourly feeds!”

Approximately 50 guests joined her for lunch including those that had travelled from Brisbane, the central coast, Sydney and Queensland.

Wendy enjoyed having most of her family with her. She has 6 children, 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

JUNIOR SQUASH CHAMPIONS — CONTRIBUTED — Max Reid and Amelia Thurtell have been crowned Orange Squash Club’s junior male and female champions for 2019.

The pair claimed the major spoils at the One Strength courts on Sunday morning when a 14-strong field contested the club’s first junior championships in more than three decades.

Reid took out the division one Palmer pool’s decider, coming from a game behind to defeat a valiant Max Thurtell 16-17, 15-10, 17-14, while Amelia was awarded the top female prize after competing with distinction in the male-heavy senior divisions.

The final in the division two Martin pool served up the match of the day, with Lachie Atkinson saving three match points in the second game and holding his nerve in the third to eventually overpower Robbie Stanley 11-15, 17-14, 15-13.

Division three Keegan turned into a battle of the sisters, with Ellie Roberts defeating sister Abi for the silverware.

Patrick Penberthy-Neil was named the club’s

Most Improved and Best and Fairest for 2019.

OSC junior coordinator Kylie Keegan was impressed with the depth of talent on display on the weekend and holds high hopes the event will become a permanent fixture on the city’s sporting calendar.

“Max and Amelia were deserving winners, they’ve been among the best junior players in the club all year,” Keegan said.

“For many of the players it was their first foray into competition play, and it was great to expose them to those rules and formats.

“I’m hopeful we can continue to increase the playing pool in 2020 and put this event back on the calendar permanently.”

The club’s weekly training sessions, held at 10am on Sundays, will resume when term one recommences in 2020.

The cost is $5, with covers the use of the courts and all equipment, including racquets and protective googles.

CADIA DIGS DEEP TO SUPPORT CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE The Salvation Army Christmas Toy Drive got a special delivery of more than 150 toys and gift vouchers on Friday thanks to employees of Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations.

Over the past three weeks, Cadia has been collecting toys and gift vouchers donated by employees and contractors through a site-wide toy drive to help local families in need this Christmas.

It’s the second year Cadia has supported the toy drive and the response from staff has been overwhelming.

“Our workforce was very keen to support the toy drive and the fantastic work of the Salvation Army in making Christmas a little brighter for many children across the Orange community,” said a Cadia spokesperson.

“This year, we received more than $1,800 in a range of gift vouchers which will give families the opportunity to personally select presents appropriate to their children’s interests.”

“Our Dollar for Dollar program has helped make the toy donations go even further this year, by matching every toy or gift voucher donated. This has allowed us to provide an additional amount of $3,410 in gift vouchers to support more local families in need.”

Words of Wisdom with Melise Coleman This week I caught up with Sylvia Lovenfosse.

Where and when were you born? Kalgoorlie, WA What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? To treat the people you meet decently.

What is your favourite childhood memory?

Probably going to the little beach that was just down from us, it would have been less than a kilometre. I would go down there exploring with my siblings, we would spend the day picking up different items.

What did you enjoy about Christmas as a child?

Just the excitement of Christmas, the buildup, I loved it. We always had a big Christmas dinner and we always had chicken on the table. We didn’t get huge presents, my parents just couldn’t afford it, though I can remember mum taking us into Adelaide, that was a big deal to go into Adelaide.

What did you get up to when you were young?

Well we lived in a beach suburb, so our weekends were spent down on the beach, I never learnt to swim until I was nine years old though. The beach was different, it didn’t have the huge waves that NSW beaches did.

What did you want to be when you grew up? A Nurse, from the age of four years old, I was in hospital getting a hernia repaired and I came home and said I’m going to be a nurse! Mum and Dad said no you’re not!! *laughs* What was your first job? A Nurse, I started as a 15-year-old.

I used to top Science at my high school, my Science Teacher said to me ‘you’re not coming back next year?’ I said no, my parents can’t afford for me to stay at school any longer, not long later he told me about this hospital that I first started at, I was interviewed, and I was straight in. By the time I had finished and was old enough to officially train, I was doing all sorts of things.

I was a Nurse all my life. It was 10-hour day, but I didn’t think anything of it, I thought it was wonderful because that’s all I ever wanted to do. *smiles* What’s the secret to a happy marriage? My husband spent a lot of time away from home, *laughs* I don’t know if that has anything to do with it.

How did you meet your husband? I met Phillip (always known as Phil) when I was 17 and he was 22. I was working in the Wards at the Hospital in Broken Hill; he came in from the bush to have his appendix out. I met him the next morning... He was persistent in asking me to go out with him, I would say no but eventually I did. He smoked, and none of my family smoked and I thought, no I don’t want to date a smoker... 18 months later we got engaged. *laughs* Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? My parents, they gave their life to us, it wasn’t easy raising four kids, especially in those days. Everything went in to raising us kids.

SWIMMING CLASSES There was no shortage of children eager to learn to swim at the old Orange swimming baths (where the Library/ Gallery are now situated) in January 1956. This week’s photo shows instructor Jill Henkes from Balmain Teachers’ College instructing children to do the doggy-paddle. Older people will remember the crinkly swimming costumes for girls.

If you don’t usually read this column, stop for a minute and do so – it’s important.

Why? Because if Christmas comes and goes without you thinking about the historical Jesus – who he is, why he was born, and what his death means – then your future is at risk.

At CHRISTmas we celebrate the birth of the Christ – God’s specially chosen one – who came so that people can be born again. If you think it sounds ridiculous to try to climb back into your mother’s womb to achieve this, you aren’t alone. Firstly, I’m sure she wouldn’t be impressed and secondly that isn’t what Jesus meant. He was referring to a spiritual rebirth – a change in one’s life direction.

Jesus said “unless you are born again you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven”. And you can’t be born again unless you know about Jesus. Not just that he was a real person who lived and died in Israel 2,000 years ago. But more importantly – and even history outside the Bible supports this – that after dying he came back to life again.

So make this Christmas a time to get to a church and ask for answers to these questions about Jesus.

Thumbs down to visitors at the Blayney Community Centre on November 29th over parking has caused some concern amongst Blayney locals. The occasion was for a funeral that attracted a larger than expected crowd. The family is disappointed by the Thumbs down and we appreciate that. A very professional team who work well together to create a caring environment for chemotherapy patients. They are a treasure and a great asset to our community.

All services as in the Oncology Department with patient’s welfare uppermost.
