We also want to introduce another new feature for OC Life this year, it’s called History Talking and we’ll be running this each month throughout 2020. Until now, this feature has appeared elsewhere, so we’re delighted that the group behind it has decided to now put it in OC Life. You will find the first column in this issue, I hope you enjoy it.

We give back We believe in making things better for our community as much as we can.

We do this by regularly providing a set amount of free advertising space and sponsorship to promote local causes and events close to our hearts. It’s our way of saying thank you!

Happy New Year everyone! More and more people today are looking to lessen their impact on our natural environment, but often they don’t know just where to begin. At Word of Mouth Wines, Deborah Upjohn wants to show people that it doesn’t have to be that hard, you just have to start somewhere.

“I knew it had to change and I didn’t quite know how to change it, but I thought if I keep growing things and greening the place, something has to change — and I’ve noticed that change,” said Deborah.

Over the past few years, Deborah has planted hundreds of trees in the open field surrounding cellar door and vineyard she operates with her partner Peter Gibson.

And she has plans for at least 1500 more, plus expanding the native wildlife corridor already established on the 25-acre property.

“We have the bush corridor for native animals as they are getting pushed out to the fringes,” said Deborah.

“Over the last 200 years we’ve pushed the environment to the edges and we are functioning in the empty space in the middle.

I’m wanting to start raise awareness that we can all live together on these parcels of land and all be productive.”

For Deborah, the goal is to show that it is possible to incorporate productive farming activity, a productive and aesthetically pleasing garden while making room for native species.

It’s a philosophy that extends to the vineyard, where there has been no herbicide on the ground for almost 10 years, and care is taken to limit heavy equipment, while vegetable matter is left to decay and promote better soil health.

But it was three years ago that Deborah embarked on her ambitious planting program.

“I wanted to reconnect with what sustains me and for me it is being around plants and animals, not always productive plants and animals, but companion animals and companion plants,” said Deborah, whose garden is an eclectic mix of fruit trees and other edible plants, along with native and exotic trees.

“For me, it’s not about a landscaped, botanical garden — I didn’t want the European style garden — it’s about growing food for yourself and family and friends… being economically viable and somewhere you want to be because it is aesthetically pleasing to live here.”

Sometime that involves compromise, said Deborah, who is sanguine about sharing her fruit harvest and garden with the other local residents.

“For me it is about integrating all the wildlife — and all the pests and the bugs — and saying I’ll have that tree, you have the rest.

So now I’m flexible,” she said “And our visitors love it to see cockatoos feeding on my beautiful sunflowers that I grew to look at. It is helping us all appreciate that it is not all for us.”

It is early days yet, but Deborah has teamed up with local horticulturalist and garden

consultant Dhyan Blore to present a series of workshops throughout the year looking at topics such soil health, being waterwise, plant selection, plant placement, attracting native birdlife and bug life, pruning fruit trees and rewilding.

“I want them to be simple and practical for the everyday householder; urban dwellers as well as small farms,” said Deborah “I think there is interest in how we can be consumers and conservers at the same time… I think people are interested because we are all wanting to do something differently, but we don’t quite know what that is collectively.”

For many people just where to begin can be the biggest challenge, and that’s what Deborah is hoping to help with.

“It can be an overwhelming project to think let’s re-tree this place, so often people just run cattle and that’s how it stays and no one does any tree planting or any renewing the landscape, but having lived here for 15 years, this is all slowly happening around me and I’m hoping that we can have this as a little showcase of what you can do with 25 acres.

“You don’t have to clear it all out and put sheep on it. You can still have your work, you can still have a highly productive and creative life in your garden… We want to help people chunk it down and show them that it is achievable and help them set goals.”

I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions but having said that, I usually use the break over Christmas to review the year that’s been and to give thought to what needs to be done in the year ahead, especially with the view to improving things or doing things better overall.

2019 was not a happy year for me, but not for the reasons you may first guess. My unhappiness last year was impacted on by a couple of things, one being the uncertainty in the media generally, in particular what might happen on the local print media scene and the other reason, the way people seemed to be being brainwashed into feeling about life generally.

I mentioned before Christmas that our Community Project this year would be “Local Media is Best” and part of the way I’ll be using Orange City Life this year will be to keep bringing our readers stories and perspectives that I hope will help locals “feel good” and have a balanced view on the things that happen around us. Life is full of blessings and battles and to the best of my ability, Orange City Life will make sure that any blessings we cover get full value and any battles we cover are put in a right perspective, NOT just given the sensationalist treatment that so many media outlets are bent on doing.

Last year, like many others I’m sure, I was suckered into giving too much attention to the bad news that we were all bombarded with throughout 2019 and as we all know, there was a lot of really bad news flying around, especially at the end of the year and into 2020. I’m certainly not trying to make light of the tragedies that so many people have had to face over recent weeks and months, but I do honestly believe that as a Nation, if we let the bad news get too much of a hold of us, all manner of things will continue to slide downhill more than they ought. I firmly believe that the way people “feel” generally has a bearing on all areas of life, including our overall health and well-being. I don’t have the space or inclination to elaborate too much here on that, but I will say this; things happen when people are motivated and it’s hard to get and stay motivated if everything we see and hear around us is heavily weighted or focused with bad

Sad to say, I let things get out of balance in my mind last year in the two areas and I mentioned, and I’m determined not to let the same thing happen this year.

We’re only small in the overall media scene but if we do our job well, maybe those with more clout that Orange City Life will come to see that a right balance between positive and negative is not only right and fair, but such an approach will advance our city and our nation along the way.

My firm belief is that if you’re looking for more blessings in your life, the best way to cultivate that is to think more about the needs of others and do what you can to meet them.

Orange City Life will therefore be encouraging our readers to do just that throughout 2020, if enough of us do, Orange and our Nation will be better off for it.

OUTSIDE PLAY KEEPS EYE HEALTH PROBLEMS AT BAY Specsavers Orange Optometrist Scott Priddle brought the issue to our attention following a research project conducted by Specsavers designed to better understand screen use amongst children and parental understanding of their child’s eye health.

The research reports that New South Wales children spend an average of 2.6 hours on screens each day, with 14 per cent, the equivalent to 3,011 children in the Orange area, spending more than four hours.

Those aged 13-17 are spending an average of 3.2 hours per day on screens. Those aged between 9-12 are spending an average of 2.4 hours per day on screens.

Those aged between 5-8 are spending an average of 2.1 hours per day on screens. Those aged between 0-4 are spending an average of 1.9 hours per day on screens.

The World Health Organisation recommends no screen time for children under 2 years and no more than an hour a day for children aged 2 to 5 years.

“I understand how strong the pull of digital screens is for children and I also know that the way children learn and play is drastically changing as technology becomes increasingly incorporated into everyday life,” said Specsavers Orange Optometrist Scott Priddle, who is encouraging parents to promote more outside, physical play.

with screen time is nothing to do with the actual screens. It’s simply the fact that normally when kids are on screens like phones and computers, there is a lot of near vision work that is often indoors without natural light. That’s the part that’s bad for your eyes. So other near vision, inside work like homework and reading can have a similar negative effect on the eye.”

While most New South Wales parents (59 per cent) believe their children should be spending less time on screens because it’s bad for their health, most are unsure of ways to tackle it.

“The biggest message I would like to get across to parents is to make sure their children spend time outside playing,” said Scott.

“Staring at screens and being indoors for extended periods of time can increase the risk of myopia or becoming short-sighted. This means the eyes focus well only on close objects, while more distant objects appear blurred. Children are more at risk of this, as their eyes are still developing.”

The school holidays are the perfect opportunity to encourage healthy eye habits, said Scott.

“Anything from running around the garden to helping mum and dad with errands could have a huge benefit for the eyes!”

If you’ve been doubting the Aussie Spirit of late read on, I’m about to put your mind at ease. We’ve got some wonderfully resilient and caring people in our community, and we are proud to share the story of one in our very own backyard.

range local Milissa Lennon decided she couldn’t watch TV and see one more animal of any kind endure suffering from these terrifying bush fires. Feeling helpless, this led her to Animal Rescue Collective (ARC). The ARC has been working in NSW, Queensland, ACT and Victoria to help wildlife rescue organisations with delivery of essentials required for injured wildlife.

With the thought of donating her own van for transportation, she and two friends, Linda Bennett & Averil Keen, then took to the streets to ask businesses if they would like to help.

This resulted in a number of drop off points around town making it easy for their customers to get involved.

After creating the ‘Orange Wildlife Convoy’ Facebook page, the drop off

points were showered with donations and Milissa herself had been inundated with donations, at times making it difficult to get to the front door of her home.

We caught up with Milissa as she was picking up a trailer load of donations from Mulberry Lane Vet Hospital, a business who were only too happy to be one of the many drop off points.

Sarah Passey of Mulberry Lane Vet Hospital said, “We jumped on the opportunity, we had been brainstorming about how we could help as, like everyone else, we were feeling helpless. We put the ARC list on Facebook and Orange just responded, we were flooded with donations the next day and they have been constant. I think people were happy they finally had somewhere to donate to, we even had two young

girls donate their own teddies, it’s just been overwhelming.”

Milissa explained, “Our storage shed was overflowing within days, we needed a bigger shed! The response of Orange has been really amazing, crazy, but a good crazy, they’ve made such a massive impact. I know all of the carers/rescuers will be so grateful for every single donation regardless of how big or small it was.”

“When I put donations into the hands of carers and they cry, it’s because it means so much to the injured animals. It’s very humbling to see, knowing how very grateful they are. Milissa continued, “I did my first donation drop to Queenie Green last week and within two minutes of meeting her we were sharing tears, hugs and laughter. How it has brought people together is amazing.

With the overwhelming response Australia wide, it has opened the possibility for Milissa to be able to get supplies to our carers out west who are suffering through drought.

“This drought is having a devasting impact on everyone and everything. For the carers not affected by the fires, it can be difficult to access funding, as the priority is given to animals on the firegrounds first. I believe that many of the small not-for-profit sanctuaries look after their own funding by way of donations or paying for items themselves.

“For years; the animals have been dying due

to the drought and these small sanctuaries are often having to dip into their own pockets to make ends meet. So, I’ve asked if we can get some of the donations out to them too.

“I was in touch with one carer out west, and I was sitting on my lounge crying, because she was saying, she ‘feels forgotten out here’. A sentiment of many people living in rural communities throughout Australia. Her message was, ‘I’m giving up, I’m not going to ask for help’. I’ve only been involved for two weeks, but if I can help her, then I bloody-well will.

“It shouldn’t be happening, there are so many people out west that are suffering the effects of this drought, that are feeling forgotten, I want them to know they are not forgotten,

that we are also going to look after our own backyard. With everyone’s help, we’d like to show them we care not just for the animals injured in the fires, but for the wildlife carers that have been saving animals throughout this drought.”

ust six months ago, the 20-year-old local guitarist could only dream of one day making a living through his music, but today he is part of up and coming hard rock band, The Witching Hour, who have just finished a tour of the east coast.

And Kyle has also now signed on with legendary Australian manager Michael Browning — the man who brought AC/DC and INXS to the world’s attention.

“It’s crazy! It is all a spin out for me,” said Kyle, who had never played a gig outside of Orange, before embarking on the recent tour to Melbourne, Brisbane and towns in between.

“The tour was crazy, because I’d never done a tour, or even played anywhere outside of Orange before that! So, I got to see Melbourne for the first time and Brisbane as well. We had a gig in Newcastle a couple of months ago and that was pretty rowdy, but Brisbane was a highlight just because of the other bands that

were playing,” said Kyle.

Growing up in Orange, music was always a part of Kyle’s life. In primary school he joined the choir and later eagerly picked up a guitar.

While it was country music that Kyle remembers from his early years, it was rock that really got his attention “I got shown rock music when I was about 12 and once I figured out you could do that on a guitar I was like, ‘that’s what I want to do!’” said Kyle, who lists Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi and Jimmy Hendrix among his guitar idols.

Kyle’s path to joining The Witching Hour actually began six years ago at a music camp in Sydney.

“I was about 14 and I met a dude who was a drummer there, we just became friends and stayed in contact on Facebook and that. I would go up and jam with him every now and then, and I followed this band that he’d started, then their guitarist left and he hit me up!”

Kyle auditioned for the rest of the band members in

June last year, but it didn’t go quite as he’d hoped.

“There were so many things I thought went wrong and the first thing I said when I walked out was, ‘I don’t think I’ll be hearing from them anytime soon’,” he said.

“But then they called me and said you’re in!”

With the tour complete, Kyle said the band are just getting ready to release their next single and preparing to tour again in February.

“We are definitely going to keep riding the tour wagon and keep playing as many gigs as we can, get as many new followers as we can and build that up,” said Kyle.

“And eventually I think we’d like to take it overseas and see how we go in an international market — you never know unless you try! I just want to keep playing music, making more songs, trying to get new fans, play places we’ve never been to and see the world!”

Words of Wisdom with Melise Coleman This week I caught up with the beautiful Janita (Jan) Murphy, whilst Jan admits she is a little shy, she mentioned she hasn’t had many dull moments in her life and she is a country girl through and through.

Where and when were you born? Temora, 1936

to do millinery, I wanted to be a dress maker, but I guess I did do all of that. I made so many clothes for my children, I had 10 daughters so you can imagine how many weddings we had *smiles*I just kept making clothes and clothes and clothes.

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? Stay with your faith, keep in mind how other people can have great sadness and sometimes you won’t even know anything about it, treat them well.

What life advice would you pass along to your grandchildren? Well, I had 12 children, I always wanted a big family, and I got my way. *laughs* I have 32 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren with another one on the way. I couldn’t imagine life with a small family, it wouldn’t have been as interesting *laughs* my children are wonderful people, I would have hated to have missed out on them. I’d say love one another is the biggest thing.

Did you enjoy school? I was a little bit naughty at school *laughs* because I didn’t want to do the schoolwork, I wanted to do my art. I used to ride my horse to school, and it was quite a considerable way.

Companionship, love and understanding of each other.

What big world events were the most memorable while you were growing up? I remember my Mother and Father having coupons for food during one of the droughts we had. I was also 10 when the war was happening, I suppose we didn’t know as much because we didn't have the media stuff we have now. I think living on a farm the way I was for many years we didn’t have much, we would have only had a wireless.

What is your favourite childhood memory?

Just being on the farm, out there amongst the cows and sheep. Getting up early in the morning and milking the cow before school. We had a wheat farm. Because my Dad had very bad vision, I can remember I used to help him scoop the hay, sew up the wheat bags and I used to ride my horse and he would get me to move the sheep and cattle. Those were some of the happiest years of my life, it was doing things that I loved.

What are you most proud of? My family. *smiles* 1

What is your favourite thing to do for fun now?

I’d say art. Watercolour is my favourite, but I do pencil and acrylic paintings too. Its relaxing for me, if you’re creative in any way some way or another it needs to come out *laughs*. I go out and about with my children, I keep busy, and I love reading, I’ve always been a reader. I don’t have that many dull moments. *smiles*

Justin Landers named finalist at Tamworth song writing awards

Local country artist Justin Landers has been named a finalist at the Tamworth Songwriters Association (TSA) Songwriter Salute Awards for his song song ‘A Campfire Waltz’.

Justin is one of four artists in contention for the Bev Daniel Commemorative Award for a Traditional Country Song.

“It’s absolutely awesome,” said Justin. “It was just awesome to be nominated, but it got even more exciting when I actually became a finalist last week!”

A Campfire Waltz is the first single off Justin’s upcoming album. It tells a story about a couple who go camping to get away from the stresses of the city and everyday life, to rekindle the flame of their love.

For Justin it was a chance to diversify his skills and try writing something a little different.

“I saw that on the charts there wasn’t much traditional country any more, especially waltzes, so I thought OK, I’ll stretch my songwriting skills here and see if I can write a waltz,” said Justin, who was surprised by the response his song has received.

“It actually made it onto the charts, so that was really

good and so I thought I’d might enter it to the TSA and look where it’s going!”

Justin is spending this week in Tamworth performing and taking in the festival, but might even extend his stay to attend the TSA awards presentation on 21 January.

And for the second year in a row, Justin has also been nominated for a Dubbo Dusty Boot Award for services to Country Music. The Dubbo Dusty Boot awards are part of the Dubbo Country Music Spectacular which is held every June long weekend.

“This will be my third year performing as part of the Dubbo Country Music Spectacular. These awards are unique in that they are not awarded because of or who you are or how many record sales you have made but instead, these awards are awarded for your services to the country music industry,” said Justin.

“I wasn’t successful last year, but fingers crossed for this year!”

Justin has also just released a brand-new single called How ‘Bout This Weather, and expects to complete the album he is working on before the end of the year.

A Fresh Approach for the

The Carcoar Village Fair held on Australia Day has been a perennial favourite on the regional events calendar for over 30 years, and this year it will be reinvigorated with a fresh new approach aimed at bringing the real heritage and characters of Carcoar’s rich history to life and sharing the talents of local and regional artisans.

key focus of this year’s event is the brand-new concept of roving and immersive street performances, with professional Actors in vintage clothing re-enacting scenes from the true history of Carcoar. These will include characters such as Carcoar Mary, the Wild Man of Carcoar, the Fingerless Ghost and the Carcoar Axe Murderer.

“These performances won’t be scheduled at set times but will happen spontaneously throughout the day,” explains composer/ producer Tim Hansen, Artistic Director of the Carcoar Village Fair. “You might happen to be standing at the bar of the local pub when the Fingerless Ghost glides by playing the accordion. An upright piano will also be available in the street for passers-by to play.”

The main street will be dedicated to a Vintage Car display, with a meandering Artisan Market throughout the village and along the river and local food and wine producers showcasing the best that the region has to offer, such as local wine from See Saw Wines, craft beer from Badlands Brewery, artisanal cheeses from Second Mouse Cheese, hand-poured Meeraboo Soy Candles and awesome Aussie made Spilt Milk gelato. Millthorpe Garden Nursery will also be there.

Don’t miss an intriguing insight into local bushranger history with the popular Bushranger Tales being presented at Carcoar’s historic Court House once again by author and historian, Craig Bratby – one of the region’s experts on bushranger Johnny Vane and his escapades with the Ben Hall gang in the Carcoar area in 1863.

Paying It Forward Back in ’73 I discovered Elton John, in 2020 I’ve done some ‘paying it forward’.

[Spoiler Alert : If you are going to see Elton in Bathurst next week and want a ‘surprise’, then stop reading now, otherwise …]

Like most of the music platform laid for me in my formative years, my dear ol’ dad brought home the album ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ just after it was released. It was a staple on our record player for all of us from that day, and still is for me on my record player in Millthorpe. Listening to the 17 track double-vinyl masterpiece paved the way for much more Elton ‘stuff’ in our household. In ’81 we ventured to the Hordern Pavilion to see him perform live – I’ve now seen him 5 times, and next week in Bathurst will be the 6th and final time.

Fame and fortune sent him a bit wacky in the late 80s, with his drug and alcohol-fuelled parties and frivolous spending sprees gaining world notoriety. Then he turned it around in the early 90s, pointing his superpowers, genius and influence to the forces of good. His AIDS Foundation has raised over $400 million, and now sees him well and truly on the positive side of the ledger – the man upstairs will have forgiven him for going off the rails, for sure.

Anyway, to the concert in Sydney last week. The guy is 72 years old, but he works the keys like he’s in his 20s, and he’s been on the road doing his ‘farewell’ tour for nigh on two years. I can only hope I’m that loud and rowdy when I’m that age! He walked on stage, sat at the piano and belted Gmaj7 (the opening four note chord for Bennie

and the Jets) and we were away. For the next three hours he had the 21000 people in Qudos arena mesmerised and screaming every lyric – with some us getting a whack on the leg from their wife (again) for singing too loudly, ”Goodbye Norma Jean …”.

Whilst the bassist passed away in 1993, he’s got all the other members of the original band on this farewell tour (all in their 70s too), the same guys who toured with him to Australia on his first tour in 1971, and the ones I saw in ’81 – Nigel on drums, Ray on percussion and of course the legendary Davey Johnstone playing all sorts of electric guitars (I counted 6 different ones). Most mind-blowing of the stage setup was the fact that there were three percussionists, Nigel, Ray and one more – a bigger sound I’ve never really heard from a rock band. Whilst every tune he pumped out and paid homage to lyricist Bernie Taupin deserved rating of 11 out of 10, I was anticipating that his go-to classics like Rocket Man and Saturday would be the biggies. But, Eltie is full of surprises, and some of the lesser known tracks like ‘All The Young Girls Love Alice’, ‘Indian Sunset’ and ‘Levon’ (which unbelievably went for 15 astounding minutes), stole the show in my view.

So, with tickets to both a Sydney show and Bathurst next week, I’ll be washing dishes for a while. But worth every cent, says I. I’m sure the guy who educated me in the legend that is Elton is watching all the concerts from up in heaven, so the best I can do is ‘pay it forward’ a little bit by educating my youngest in all things Elton. Would an 18 yr old like an Elton concert? He was spellbound. His favourite? The 11 minute classic ‘Funeral for a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding’. Hopefully in 20 years he’ll be playing GYBR on his own record player with his kids. Thanks Elton, it’s been a blast.

As the Tamworth Country Music Festival is right on our doorstep, so is Orange local Clancy Pye’s opportunity to shine.

You’ll remember we reported Clancy’s achievement of making the top 10 Finalists for the Toyota Star Maker competition (held at the Tamworth Country Music Festival) in a previous edition. It is said to be the biggest prize in Australian Country Music and has launched the careers of so many artists Clancy idolises.

We caught up with her before she hit the road talking all things pre-show, as she is to take the stage this Sunday.

“I think preparation is the key.

I feel comfortable performing on any stage when I’m well prepared, so I’ve been working really hard on preparing my two songs for Sunday night.

I’ll be singing two of my own songs so I suppose that will be a new experience for me as I haven’t had that opportunity previously on such a big stage.

We have a tight schedule with rehearsals as well as meeting with the judges for an interview during the day prior to the Grand Final Concert so again, I think it’s just about being prepared and not feeling overwhelmed by the whole experience. It’s a process I really want to soak in and enjoy so I’m very much looking forward to that.”

The Orange Aquatic Centre seems to be a popular destination, as does PCYC as they host a school holiday program to keep the littlies entertained.

How to get the BEST out of OUR COUNCILS

COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORTS 2018/19 PART TWO BLAYNEY AND CABONNE

Council Annual Reports have recently been published. They contain a wealth of information, and I will write a few columns about what they tell us about our councils as part of the series – How to Get the Best Out of Our Councils.

Before Christmas I analysed the Annual Reports of Orange and Bathurst Council and in the spirit of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, I see that the Dubbo Daily Liberal extended this analysis to Dubbo Regional Council as well.

The Annual Reports include reports on performance in delivering the Councils’ strategic plans as well as the financial statements. The Local Government Act requires that a council must prepare a report for that year reporting as to its achievements in implementing its delivery program and the effectiveness of the principal activities undertaken in achieving the objectives at which those principal activities are directed (S428(1)).

Cabonne’s Annual Report starts out well in addressing this requirement by saying ‘Council’s achievements in implementing the Delivery Program and the effectiveness of the principal activities undertaken in achieving the objectives at which those principal activities are directed and addressed in Council’s Operational Plan.

Performance achieved in these areas are detailed in Council’s Final Operational Plan 2018/2019, this document is available on Council’s website www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au or by contacting Council’s Public Officer’.

Unfortunately, my hopes were dashed as when I eventually found the Operational Plan 2018/19 it did not contain the performance achieved, so it appears that Cabonne Council has not complied with the Local Government Act. Blayney’s Annual Report is much easier to follow and does provide a Delivery Plan Performance Status Report – June 2019 within the Annual Report but because of the way the Delivery Program has been developed this report does not achieve the objectives of the Act in that it does not report the achievements in implementing its delivery program and the effectiveness of the principal activities undertaken in achieving the objectives at which those principal activities are directed.

S404 of the Local Government Act requires that: the delivery program must include a method of assessment to determine the effectiveness of each principal activity detailed in the delivery program in implementing the strategies and achieving the strategic objectives at which the principal activity is directed. Which means achieving the strategic objectives in the Community Strategic Plan. Blayney’s Delivery Program does not have assessment methods.

To be fair, very few NSW Councils achieve the intentions of the Integrated Planning and Reporting reforms of 2009, which aimed to improve the accountability of councils to their community. I will write a future column about how this should be done, what to look out for in End of Term Reports, and which councils do it well.

The comparison of senior staff salaries are interesting: Blayney Shire Council Senior Staff Remuneration - $242,014 Council’s organisation structure provides for the employment of the General Manager as the only senior staff position. The General Manager is engaged under the Office of Local Government Standard Contract of Employment. The senior staff contract is performance based for a period of five (5) years.

The all-inclusive remuneration package of senior staff that incorporates salary component, employer superannuation, non-cash benefits and amounts payable for fringe benefits tax in the 2018/19 financial year amounted to $242,014.

Cabonne Council Also employs one position as ‘senior staff’ that being the General Manager. The total expenditure for 2018/19 in respect of employment, including salary, package benefits, fringe benefits tax, superannuation and provision for leave entitlements was $574,809.66. Whilst Blayney and Cabonne are in different Council categories it seems unusual that the bill for Cabonne is more than twice the cost of Blayney.

I have extrapolated the information given in the annual report to show the annual cost of the incumbent General Manager, the Acting General Manager and the new General Manager.

It is unclear why there were two General Managers of Cabonne from 19 April to 17th May 2019.

Overall employee costs are relatively low for both councils: Blayney employee costs were 38% of total operational expenditure.

Cabonne employee costs were 35% of total operational expenditure.

Cabonne serves almost twice the population of Blayney and an area around 4 times bigger.

SIOBHAN MILLER One of Scotland’s foremost singers, Siobhan Miller is an exceptional talent, renowned for her unique vocal style paired with her evocative song writing.

Miller creates music with detail and rich melodies that combine the sounds of indie and alternative music with sounds from her roots in folk music.

Growing up in a musical family, she was immersed in traditional song and learned from many of Scotland’s finest source singers in her early years as a performer.

What We Did in Our Holidays.

We all know that Australia is a long way from most of the rest of the world. We are certainly made aware of this when we arrive in the northern hemisphere, jet lagged and weary after a very long flight.

In spite of being so far away, we are among the most travelled people in the world with more than half of us owning a passport. Travel has become much easier, faster and certainly less expensive than ever before.

It wasn’t always like this.

When the Orange Oral History Group gathered this month, we remembered the holidays we had when we were young.

We didn’t travel in luxury.

Some of us went by train which could be exciting.

Steam and cinders flew into your eye if you put your head out the window. And there was the wonderful feeling of rushing through tunnels.

Pat Daley remembered this on her way to Sydney: “I was thrilled with the whole thing.”

Some of us travelled in Dad’s car. It was not always reliable and the radiator was inclined to boil over when going up Victoria Pass towing a caravan.

Without the constraint of seatbelts, children were able to move around the back seat quite freely. Much fighting, pinching and generally complaining about how long the journey was taking went on, while through the open windows a hot blast of air blew over all. It was often a choice between the wind or Dad’s cigarette smoke.

It was all such great fun!

Dick Page went by car to Manly for a family holiday. As they left for home his father’s foot slipped off the clutch and split the reverse gear. Dick explained: “He decided to continue home, but all the way we had to look for spots to stop where we didn’t have to reverse.”

Richard Gilchrist told us: “We hired a caravan and halfway up Victoria Pass the

car started to boil and we had to stop every five minutes while it cooled down,” Rosemary Currie accompanied her American mother to visit her grandparents in 1947.

“We went in a bride ship. It was carrying women who had married GI soldiers to their new homes in America.

There were thirty-two passengers to a cabin and we had storms which caused broken legs, and occasionally had the excitement of people jumping overboard. I thought it was great!”

John Coxhill, who grew up in England, set off for his first holiday as a teenager with three friends and without the eagle eye of their parents: “We had visions of smoking and drinking without any supervision. But we ended up at a Butlins holiday camp.

These were family orientated venues which were very popular during the thirties and forties but not great for what we had wanted to do.”

Most of our group had to be content with camping.

Elma’s husband was very efficient at erecting the tent but apparently not quite so good at attaching the trailer that held it.

“I was driving through the mountains on the way to Batemans Bay when the trailer suddenly came off which was quite alarming.”

The weather was always a problem when camping.

My own family set off on a beautiful balmy day to camp at Tea Gardens. We erected our tent, cooked dinner over the campfire and settled down for the night in great contentment. A few hours later, we were hit by a southerly buster which blew our tent from its moorings and we spent the rest of the night holding it up.

amazing ability to bring on the rain and may possibly be able to end the present drought. Monica Knight said: “We went with another family to camp near the Darling River. Of course as soon as the tent was up it pelted down and we were covered in mud from head to foot.”

Barbara and Jeff both had tents swamped with water, Dick was soaked on a motor bike, while Bronwyn and Glenna were completely washed out.

Dot and her husband, Frank, camped with their children near Broken Hill. They were warned that if it rained, they would have great difficulty getting out again because of the mud which was like glue. Dot continued: “There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and we would be there for only one night. What could possibly go wrong?”

At 2 am the skies opened and they were in a panic to leave. Dot asked us “Have you ever tried to pack a wet tent in a hurry?”.

But it is Karilyn Gilchrist who seems to be really able to make it rain.

“I grew up in New Zealand. My father bought an acre of wild pig infested land at the top of the South Island where we camped. My mother hated it. One afternoon my girlfriend and I cooked up a magic spell with spiders and beetles on the stove. Then we forgot about it. That night a tremendous storm broke and we were blamed.

“Years later I did a rain dance and another terrible storm broke over Auckland. My fault again of course!”

Frank Higgins, who is ninety-three and has enjoyed a lot of holidays, summed it up: “Once you would go to Central Station to see people off to the mountains.

Then you would go to the wharf to see people off overseas.

Now you go to the Airport.”

NEW YEAR RACES 1956 This was a small portion of the crowd at Orange Jockey Club’s New Year Races in January 1956, eagerly following one of the races. The New Year meeting always attracted a lot of punters and other racing enthusiasts. It was a time when men wore suits and often ties as well to the races while women dressed in their smartest outfits, complete with hats and costume jewellery.

The society holds a work day at Heritage Cottage, 148 March Street, each Wednesday from 10am to 4pm (with a lunch break from 12.30-1.30pm). Members are available to answer enquiries at this time. LADIES REQUEST A HAND When Rotarian John Apps received a call from the ‘Ladies of the Land’ requesting help just prior to Christmas he knew just whom to ask. Rallying the troops of the Rotary Club of Orange North as well as some partners and wives the group were directed to an address on Icely Road.

Here they found a shed stacked high with donated gifts from the general public for the wives of farmers doing it tough during the drought. ‘It was overwhelming’, said Ann Fraser, wife of Rotarian John Fraser. ‘The generosity of locals in helping others at a time of need is just so heart-warming’.

Co-ordinators of ‘Ladies of the Land’ Elzette Connan and friend Tracey Potts said that often these dedicated ladies of the bush put themselves last but this Christmas with the wider help of the community we hope to put them first. Thousands of pamper packs containing a personalised message of hope was included in each wrapped shoebox.

After spending considerable time loading utes, trailers and the boots of cars, the Rotarians made their way to Cumnock where ‘Ladies of the Land’ have partnered with the CWA to compile a list of recipients in local farming communities to receive the donated gifts.

ETERNITY MAKES LIFE MATTER I want you to imagine there is no heaven. No hell below us, above us only sky.

If that was true, what would that mean for life?

You may think that would be a good thing. Religion has caused so many wars. Maybe without religion we could all get along better? But I want to suggest to you that the opposite is actually true.

If there is nothing beyond death, what point would there be in helping others?

Death would mean we have no reason to even begin to make this world or our life better – because it all gets swallowed and means nothing. Even if every person was wiped out, if all we are is a mix of molecules, would it actually matter? Unless there is meaning beyond this life the answer ultimately has to be no.

Eternity makes life matter. The Bible says God has put eternity in our hearts.

We know we were meant for more than just death. Death sucks the meaning out of life. Eternity wins it back again. The death and resurrection of Jesus shows eternity is real, and that Jesus is the only way we can enter it.
