The best news story over the last week would surely have been the rain, albeit not delivered in the most perfect way. All things considered I think it would be seen by most people as a blessing. May there be lots more soon!

For many of us, it’s a bit of an in between time right now, Christmas and our main holiday time is behind us, while back to school or cranking up our jobs for another year are happening for many people. Many will be thinking about the year ahead for a number of reasons, some with anticipation of good things, others with a measure of concern, many will still be battling the consequences of what the Country has experienced over recent months, or just pondering the uncertainty of what’s ahead, and that’s not going to easy for many who have to make important decisions. Speaking for myself, I’m looking forward to settling back into the regular rhythm of life after school goes back and then seeing how the economy and business scene looks, when the dust settles again after the Christmas boost. It’s going to be challenging I feel.

On a brighter note, inside this issue you find several photos of youngsters who are about to start school for the first time this year.

Doing this was one of the thought bubbles I had over the holidays but now that I’ve seen the response, I’m very happy. Check the anticipation and smiles on the faces of these beautiful kids and enjoy reading what they’re all looking forward to as they start their official education.

Jumping out of a Plane!

What’s it like to jump out of a perfectly good airplane?

I’ll never know. Sitting tightly secured inside one is enough of a thrill for me.

F

or Orange local, Curtis Bird it’s a whole new ballgame, one that’s he’s well and truly getting the hang of and one he has done 35 times to be exact, he is, what he describes as, ‘An expert at being a rookie.’

“I used to jump off the trampoline with an umbrella as a kid and try to find other ways to catch a bit of air, or just go fast. I never really stopped. I was watching Mum do a tandem skydive when I saw a Pilot pushing a plane out of the hangar. Naturally I ran up and asked if I could sit in it. Turns out he was the President of the Orange Aero Club and, by chance, I got to start learning how to fly planes before I could even see over the dash.

I couldn’t figure out why anyone would want to jump out of one though. It’s funny how things turn out.”

Curt was 27 when he completed his first ‘jump.’ “It takes a day of ground training and a theory exam to be cleared for your first jump. Most people handle it just fine.

Everybody gets the attention they need to make sure they’re ready. It’s called an Accelerated Free Fall course.

Curt added, “That first time I jumped I’ve never been so scared. I climbed out on to the step and forgot how to think. Your instructors are right beside you though, and they’re amazing!”

“I still get scared doing it now though not so much once you know that you can handle it. Learning to push through that kind of fear can change your life. One day it will stop being scary, then it’s time to take it up a level.”

Imagine this, you’re standing on the edge of the plane ledge, Curtis describes, “There’s a moment when you fall off the plane, where everything’s quiet and you’re completely weightless. It’s like time stops and you could stay there a while.

Then suddenly the wind is screaming in your ears and you’re back in control, that’s when you get on with having some fun!”

[Are you guys okay? I’m an anxious wreck here].

“The feeling of the air. It’s like a big comfy cushion when you’re falling through it so fast. You can move around on it in ways you wouldn’t expect! We call that Free flying.

“When I learned to pack my parachute super early on, and I made an obvious rookie mistake the first time. My canopy was out of control and I would have been injured if I didn’t cut away from it. I got flung across the sky like a frisbee, but suddenly my reserve parachute was right there above my head, I was safe and sound before I could worry about getting hurt. What a ride!”

“I jump a handful of times each year.

Some people jump hundreds of times a year. It depends where you live and what you’ve going on around it, but you can jump in Goulburn, Picton, Elderslie, or Moruya and only travel between three and five hours to get there.

The team at iFly in Penrith can get you totally ready to start your AFF. I’ve never lost my balance in the air, and it’s because I practiced for about 10 minutes in the wind tunnel first.

PRICE RISES BY STEALTH Seeing grocery items go up in price is nothing new, but the way some companies increase their prices today could be considered a bit suss, and a damn nuisance for some people.

ZAREAH “I’ve been involved with Gymnastics for 13 years now and have been coaching for a year and a half. I like seeing how the kids progress and learn new skills.

I was recently accepted into a Gymnastics Leadership Camp called LEAP. It’s about leadership and building leadership skills in coaching gymnastics and in everyday life.

At the camp there was a talk by a Primary School teacher how we are the role models for the younger children and how they look up to us, there was another lady who had a gymnastics injury and she discussed our plan ‘b’ when it comes to the sport. I’ve had numerous injuries the past 18 months so that was valuable for me.

The biggest thing I took out of the experience was; You’ve got to be grateful for everyday and what you do is watched by so many different people, so make what you do positive.

In the next year or so I’m hoping to get my advanced accreditation for Gymnastics and then hoping to get my intermediate judging accreditation as well.”

I have a particular liking for Smiths Chips, but I got the heeby jeebies sometime ago when I discovered all was not what it seemed with them. You see, Smith chips are one of those things that can vary incredibly in price depending on where you buy them. For this reason, I always kept my eye out for those times where I could buy them at their cheapest. One day back in time, I noticed something different and on further examination I noticed that the contents of the bag had gone down. The bag appeared the same size but what had previously held 200gms of chips, suddenly had 190gms. Since that time, that bag quantity has had further reductions and the latest I saw, it’s now 170gms.

The prices however still appear to be similar to what they always were. I call this a price rise by stealth. There are many other examples that I could run through, but I won’t. Fair to say however, it’s a standard practice for many companies now and what makes it even more suss, is they don’t seem to change the size of the packaging. In the case of my Smith chips, I’m pretty sure I’m still getting the same size bag, less chips and more air in the bag.

When I see stuff like this going on, I get pretty ticked off, it’s the grumpy old man inside me coming out. My wife on the other hand is a much nicer and more tolerant person than me

but even she got annoyed recently when we were having guests for dinner. She wanted to impress them so she picked out a couple of recipes from her myriad of recipes, collected over centuries I should mention, or so it seems, but when she got to the supermarket to buy the ingredients she needed, she too discovered that the contents of the products mentioned in the recipes were, in most cases, less than she needed. How frustrating! Keep in mind, these are the type or recipes that most women have in their pantries and typically accumulated over many years of tearing them out of New Idea magazines, Women’s Weeklies and so on. It’s what women have done for yonks. Problem is, most of those recipes often name products and quote quantities that could be readily purchased at the supermarket. Not any more!

On one hand it’s a case of grinning and bearing it, on the other hand it’s straight out deception, or stealth as I put it. Sure, it may be some clever marketing strategy designed not to draw shopper’s attention to price rises, but I don’t like it and I have little respect for companies that choose to do business that way. Sad to say, these companies know full well what they are doing and why, they also know how shoppers like me will kick and buck and grumble, but they also know that at the end of the day, after that initial contempt and spitting chips, most shoppers will settle down, fall into line and take whatever they are given. Bit sad really.

Adding colour to history — JONATHAN ROE —

“Social history adds colour and vibrancy to the dry facts of history,” says Helen McAnulty, a former schoolteacher who has spent the past four decades collecting colourful snippets of Australia’s past.

Helen was born in Sydney but grew up in towns throughout the Central West. Her father, a schoolteacher, was born in Orange. And his father served as principal of Orange East Public School from 1895 into the 1930s.

“Teaching runs in my family terribly,” laughed Helen, who long felt an affinity for Orange before settling down here twelve years ago.

“I grew up with stories of Orange. In those days uncles and aunts used to sit around the dinner table and tell stories of the past and they were great storytellers my family, some of them were probably exaggerated, but I think that probably engendered my interest in oral history.”

But it was only when Helen and her husband Bill —also a teacher— were posted to a school in Nyngan that she first ventured into

“When we got to Nyngan there was no museum and the historical society, dear old people, were all saying they wanted a museum to put their old machinery in and I thought they all looked like museum pieces to me, I’m sure they have a story,” said Helen.

“I said what about a museum of memories, and these were the early days of taping things and I didn’t know much about it but went for it and I got some wonderful people like Arthur Hall.”

As a 21-year-old Corporal at the Somme during the First World War, Arthur Hall rushed a machine gun post shooting four of the enemy, capturing nine along with two guns. The following day, during a heavy barrage, he carried a wounded comrade to safety. He was awarded a Victoria Cross for his actions.

OCLife “I had no idea he was a VC until halfway through the interview,” said Helen. “I asked, where were you fighting in France and he quietly and modestly said that he had got a VC. “So I was very moved by the West and the stories that people have to tell, because I talked to a lot of those people whose fathers were really the pioneers, they came up with cattle and that whetted my appetite a lot.”

Another favourite interview Helen recalls from that time was Elsie Walsh.

“She had gone with her father out on a mail run in a horse and sulky in 1910 delivering mail right out into the bush and she saw Hailey’s Comet and she described it to me… these are such amazing memories,” said Helen.

There next teaching posting was Gulgong, which Helen found to be another rich source of stories.

“I was so thrilled when we went to Gulgong, it was wonderful because Gulgong is a place where people have lived for generations and they didn’t move… people would remember their parents talking about the gold rush and things,” said Helen, who began to compile the stories she collected in articles for the Mudgee Guardian under the title ‘History Talking’.

It was also in Gulgong, where Helen began — initially by chance — her unique approach of using group interviews to tease out stories around a particular topic. It’s a practice she has continued since moving to Orange, with the 30 members of her Oral History Group meeting monthly at Duntryleague to discuss a chosen subject.

“I had discovered that in a group people reminded each other of things, they are able to come at it from different points of view,” said Helen.

“My method of running a meeting is they sit all in a big circle and I pass the microphone around

and they all have a say on a particular topic and the revelations that come out are amazing.

“It has to be social history; you can’t do the history of this building… and I’m very aware that you cannot regard it as actually true because people can exaggerate, and they can see things differently.

“But that is what I like about social history; you might not always have the facts entirely right, and you’ve got to be aware of that, but you do have colour, you have a

human element to it.”

When Helen gets her group together every month, she never knows just where the session will lead, but there is one thing she is very sure of after all her years of collecting oral history. “Behind every face is a story. No matter how much people say, ‘I have nothing to say’, there is always something.”

High heeled fundraiser HOPING FOR WELL-HEELED DONORS — JONATHAN ROE —

Ashlee McGuire knows what it is like growing up with depression and anxiety and she wants to show others that help is at hand.

n a bid to raise awareness about mental illness and fundraise for Beyond Blue, Ashlee has gathered a group of brave locals who will be strutting the stage in an amateur drag queen competition.

“So we have a few local ‘celebrities’ competing and they are going to do a lip synch battle. They’ll be dancing and lip syncing to a favourite song of theirs and then we have Phil Donato and Betty Confetti who are our judges,” said Ashlee, who is currently on maternity leave and decided to use her time away from work to help raise

money for a cause she is passionate about.

“I’ve had a life filled with anxiety and depression and growing up I didn’t have anything, any tools that were readily available to me, but as I’ve grown up I’ve realised that there are lots of people and organizations out there that are willing to help people through hard times and make sure people are aware that they are not alone.

“Having these problems in life, they don’t have to be debilitating; there are always people there to help. Over 45 per cent of Australians will experience

some kind of anxiety or depression within their life so that’s a pretty high number.”

So why an amateur drag competition?

“I think that there are a lot of people that go through life wearing a bit of a mask, there are a lot of people who suffer from depression or anxiety and you don’t know. So what better way than to have people dress up and, in a way, express who they really are while not having to be themselves,” she said.

The competition, called Having the Blues Can be a Real Drag will feature routines from six competitors, including Ashlee herself.

“So we’ve got: Dr David Howe; Matt Jeffery, who is one of our local fire fighters; Scott Preston, who is an IT guru up at James Sheahan; we’ve Stacy Carthew who works at St George and my little brother Jack. he’s flying over from Adelaide, and he’s going to participate as well,” said Ashlee.

The acts will be judged by Member for Orange Phil Donato alongside Bathurst drag performer Betty Confetti aka Jonathan Hosking.

“I’m very excited, it is my very first drag competition that I’m judging,” said Hosking in character as Betty Confetti.

“We will be looking at different things

like their outfit, how they can sync but also their overall performance — it is an overall trifecta of things.”

Betty was willing to offer this little piece of advice to the competitors.

“Just have fun with it honestly! I know that is a cliché, but just don’t be caught up in the details. Throw a bit of colour on, throw a wig on and just have fun because that fun will transfer into your performance and that’s what we will take note of.”

First time competitor Dr David Howe seems to be taking it all in his stride.

“I’ve been on stage for different functions, but never performing,” said Dr Howe.

“I just got a call from Ashlee and she put it out there. I know Matt and I spoke to him and thought if Matt is going to do it, there’s no reason I can’t do it!

“I’m not so much nervous, but I’m trying to get my dance steps perfected and that’s taking time.”

A Gypsy Called Teddy — MELISE COLEMAN —

Isn’t he a sight? Meet ‘The Teddy Boy’ a Gypsy Cob imported all the way from the United Kingdom when he was eight months old.

O

nce he was one of the top working stud Stallions in the Byron Bay Regions. Now 10 years old and beautiful in nature, Teddy has found his home with 13-year-old Lucia Varian, here in Orange.

A rare horse breed here in Australia, it’s even rarer to find a Cob with the impressive resume that Teddy has. Gypsy Cobs are known widely for pulling carts, though this Cob competes in dressage, jumping, hacking, cross country and he’s even tried his hoof at camp drafting.

Teddy’s future changed not long after Lucia spotted a flyer with his face on it, “I always loved horses though I had only ever had miniature horses.

I saw these Gypsy Cobs on the internet, and I fell in love with them straight away, not long after we went into a horse shop and there was a flyer there with Teddy on it. He became my dream horse.”

“I stuck it on my wall, about six months later when my fairer came out I showed him the poster of Teddy and said, ‘this is my dream horse, this is the horse that I would love to get.’ He said, ‘Oh that’s the Teddy Boy, he lives just down the road from you.” If that isn’t meant to be, I don’t know what is!

“Mum and I got in touch with the owner, she let us down to see him and I just bonded with him, I went down there all the time to bath him and feed him.

“On Christmas I looked out the window and he was in our front yard, I

just screamed and ran down to him, I thought we just had him on loan, but it turns out we owned him! When he arrived, he was pretty green, pretty rough, he didn’t have much training.”

Lucia continued, “I’ve done a lot of work with him, we’ve been teaching each other really. He can be very bossy and dominating, he’s certainly the type of horse that is going to teach you how to step up and I had to step up that’s for sure.”

Lucia and Teddy have been jumping just over a year now, which seems to be Teddy’s favourite.

“He’s proving to a lot of people, even in the gypsy community here in Australia that they are more than just Stud horses or pulling horses. People are shocked when they see us competing, they write him off before they even see what he can do. But, he’s always a crowd favourite,” Lucia smiled.

With horse competitions comes - the glitz and glam of it all - washing, and for this duo, only a mere seven hours and two shampoo bottles ensures Teddy is squeaky clean! “Cobs are a lot more work, but they are worth it. He’s like a little angel... most of the time,” Lucia laughed.

Being one of the very few full bred Gypsy Cobs who are competing in shows and competitions in Australia, Lucia started an Instagram showcasing Teddy. “I wanted people to know what heavy horses can do, everyone thinks that he wouldn’t be able to do anything but pull a cart, he can jump C grade competitively, which is 75cm. I thought he’d get to 60cm, so he’s even impressed me.”

I’ve had quite a few messages saying, ‘you two are an absolute inspiration.’ “It makes me feel really happy, I just like sharing our story with people and telling people what cobs can do.

Don’t underestimate them, they can do anything, they are actually really brilliant.”

Now, Lucia and Teddy have their sights set on competitions at The Royal Easter Show as well as Tamworth. Best of luck guys!

Local artists are putting their talents and brushes to good use, donating works to fundraise for the Rural Fire Service Orange Art Society president David Mason said their members, like countless other Australians, were looking at how they could help in the wake of the devastating bushfire around the country “So we’ve come up with the idea that we’ll do an auction and sale of paintings that have been donated by local artist and not so local artists — we’ve got quite a few from around the state who have donated works as well,” said David “We have got works donated by Ted Lewis, Jane Tyack and Joy Engelman to name a few! And we have had a Greg Turner Original donated as well.”

About 50 works have been donated to the cause

and are now hanging in the Orange Art Society gallery, located in the Cultural Centre, Sale Street, and accessible from the Woolworths Carpark.

They will be available for viewing (and some even for sale) for the next few weeks right up until the auction night on 22 February.

“As we have been getting them in we’ve been hanging them in the gallery, so if anyone wants to have a look they are there ready to go,” said David.

“Some works will only be auctioned, but others are happy if someone comes in and makes a reasonable offer, they’ll take it!

“We have already received financial donations and our first sale from Daffyd Vernon. He has only just started work and wanted to help the RFS. So he purchased his first work of art and was delighted that this was going to help the RFS.” The Orange Art Society is hoping to raise at least $40,000 though their art sale and auction. All the money raised will be donated to the Rural Fire Service.

The auction will be held at 7pm Saturday 22 February with the gallery open from 5pm. The gallery will be open most days until the auction for people to view the available works.

All in a life’s work — JONATHAN ROE —

Every Monday morning George White goes to work, just as he has done for most of his 85 years.

“I’ve got a bit of a problem; I just can’t sit around,” said George. “I don’t want to try it, I just like being active and working.”

George was born in Orange in 1934, the fourth of five boys. His mother sadly passed away when he was twelve and a few years later, George left school to help his father in the family orchard.

“We had an orchard three miles out on the Anson Road and I walked to school rain, hail or shine,” said George.

“I remember at the end of the war living on the orchard with coupons to buy food. We had no electricity, no fridge, no washing machine, the dunny was down the backyard. My five brothers and I worked picking and packing the fruit, caring for and milking a cow and feeding the pigs.

“The last three years of my schooling was very tough, and I left school at the age of 15 and worked for my father for ten shillings a week and my keep.”

But after two years, George said he had seen nothing of his promised pay and so left Orange to go work on the farm of an uncle near Condobolin.

“I share farmed for three years growing

wheat and one year we had a really good year, the next year was very wet and the third year drought. I left and came home to Orange and bought a truck.”

And trucks were to be George’s life for the next 55 years.

“I started carting fruit to Sydney markets, Melbourne and Brisbane. I wouldn’t be able to count how many trips I made over the mountains. I used to do three and even four trips a week carting fruit to Sydney and coming home,” said George.

“I had an experience on that [Victoria] pass in the early days. It was the last market before Easter, and I broke an axle right on the steep bit there. It was very hard to hold and it was creeping backwards and I was just sitting there ready to jump out. A fellow pulled up and I yelled out for him to come and help me and he started to roll a cigarette. I said, ‘listen mate, get me a chock or I’m going to jump out of this and let it go! We had to unload that truck there on the steep path and still get into that last market before Easter. We made it, but it was pretty hectic!

“I had no heater in my truck, so I put a copper pipe across the seat, the full width of the

truck, connected to the radiator and that was my heater. And we used to sleep beside the truck on the ground. I would take me 19 hours driving to Brisbane and now they do it in about 9 or 10 hours.”

In the late 1950s, George bought two mobile cranes, the only ones in Orange at that time.

“I did a lot of building of hay sheds — forklifts were not around, so cranes were used for lifting everything,” said George, who lifted all the steel for the construction of the second floor of the ex-services club, the old Channel 8 Studio on the Bathurst Road, and the Suma Park Dam. Today, three of George’s six children are in the trucking game, but he handed in his heavy vehicle licence when he turned 80.

“I’m 85 now and I still work five days a week, I pick up the cardboard from the Chemists and all the shops and take it out to recycling.

People pay me to take it away,” said George, who has no plans of retiring anytime soon.

“I do about ten pick-ups a day and take it all out to the recycling, I’ve been doing this cardboard for the last 12 years probably — and I don’t want to stop! I just like working; I don’t know how you retire at 65!”

… right before the dawn It was like Australia came out to play over the summer holiday for us.

Happy Australia Day everyone. No talk of controversies, changes of date, protests, or anything else. I’m sure everyone can find one thing to be thankful for on yet another long weekend to appreciate the lucky country. Light at the end of the tunnel regarding a break in the drought may still be a distance away, but the way everyone has banded together makes you feel very privileged to come from the land down under, even in dark times.

I’d mentioned previously that we had an American guest with us for the holidays. So we were on a mission to ‘Aussie it up’ over Christmas. Well, we didn’t really have to, because at every turn, it appeared that Aussie came to us, rather than us needing to chase it.

Visits to the War Memorial, Parliament House and Big Bash got us well and truly rolling on the All Aussie Adventure. As we packed things up to head to the river in Forbes for Christmas, a trip down to the back shed to grab the folding tables saw us swing by the dam to check on the (low!) level. Knock me over with a feather if there wasn’t a big grey roo sitting under the willow tree, shading himself from the world, appreciating all things Millthorpe. Our US friend snapped away, taking pics as the roo happily posed, then hopped around, blissfully unaffected by our presence.

Later that afternoon, Mr America offered to put the bins out, and found a lovely Copperhead curled up asleep underneath the yellow bin, further perpetuating the myth everything in Australia is destined to kill you.

degree heat (104F for him), swimming and classic catches in the river, the massive plate of prawns, and golf and darts made for an absurd change for someone used to freezing temps and regular snow each year on Dec 25th.

As we ventured north to QLD via the inland road, the devastation caused by the drought and the fires really made an impact on all of us. Not only did we see ‘roos hopping across the highway at very regular intervals in search of food and water, but emus and their chicks wandered the side of the road near the Pilliga, something none of us had ever seen before. Hitting the beach on the Sunshine Coast saw us dip into the water at 25.6 degrees (seriously), the waves were almost too warm, but the American was in heaven, proving quite adept at body-bashing, also heeding our advice about sunscreen.

Australia Zoo was the highlight. Closeups, pats and snaps with Echidnas, Wombats, Wedge-tailed Eagles, Koalas - check. A pane of glass separating you from the world’s deadliest snakes?

Check. But who would’ve believed it as we sat down to take in the main show in the ‘Crocoseum’? Bindi, Bob and Terri themselves came out! Crikey!

Our American friend was in raptures.

They all fed the massive crocs, the crowd cheered wildly and the moment couldn’t have been any more Australian.

On our trip south down the coast road, the impact of the fires really hit home for all of us as we came through Taree and saw all the highway road signs melted beyond recognition. With the bushland destroyed as far as the eye could see in any direction, our guest was in shock at the power of nature (as we were).

In his song Bradman, Paul Kelly sings “they say the darkest hour, is right before the dawn,” let’s hope the dawn comes quick for The Lucky Country. As you tuck into a snag on Sunday, raise your fork for those who’ve had their darkest hour, and those who helped save us. Crikey.

The Orange Day VIEW Club kicked off their 2020 with a Mad Hatters Tea Party, the purpose, a social event to raise extra funds for their Learning for Life Program.

President of Orange Day VIEW Club, Andrea White explained, “This program is supported by VIEW which supports children going to school, ands families don’t have the ability to give them what they need for school. If they become part of that program, we support them right through until they finish University, with everything they need; their books, laptops, their clothing, their excursions, everything.”

“In our Club we have three children that we support, we don’t know who those children are for privacy reasons, head office distributes the funds to these children. We have just seen the first lot of kids involved in the program now coming out of University, and we have heard some wonderful stories.

“Every year, three times a year, we get a letter of appreciation from them, we don’t know who they are and they don’t know who we are, they just tell us how they are going and everything, its lovely.”

The Club aimed to raise $400 from the event, and would like to give special thanks to Duntry League Golf Club and Thompsons Garden Centre

Music icon Sir Elton John has been wowing crowds as he tours Australia and New Zealand for the very last time of his long career. Last night the music icon was in the Central West performing to a sold-out show in Bathurst, but you may not know that there is another local link to the legendary performer?

This week Orange City life caught up with Orangeborn Nick Giameos, who has been touring with Sir Elton John as his Front of House System Engineer for over 20 years…

Thanks for talking to us Nick. Can you tell us a little bit about your growing up in Orange?

I’m an Orange boy, born and raised and proud of it! I’m the second son of Greek-born Dimitrios and Chrysoula Giameos. My parents owned the Seven Seas Fish Shop and then went on to start the Canobolas Refreshment Centre. Dad went on to become a Greek Orthodox Priest for Dubbo and surrounding areas. My brothers Angelo and Johnny own and run Kings Takeaway in Greengate and my brother Theo lives in Strathaven Scotland with his family. I am based in Brisbane these days and it’s, pretty, pretty good.

How did you get involved in the music industry?

I started playing guitar when I was a lad and went on to join Orange’s first metal band SAD. There I met some good people. When I joined the band, Glen Stevenson was on drums, Luke Ford was on Bass, Ben Rabey was on Guitars and the Lead Singer was Dan Mihai, sadly no longer with us.

When the group disbanded, we all went our separate ways and I moved to Sydney in 1993. Greek boys traditionally don’t move out of home until they’re married.

Dan was working for a Lighting and Sound Company called Jands Production Services. I had been working for an Industrial Rope Access company in Sydney and had become a licensed Rigger. Dan told me that Jands was looking for a Rigger and I was hired shortly thereafter in August of 1996 working in the Rigging Department.

How long have you worked with Sir Elton?

I first toured with Elton back in 1998. I went out on the Billy Joel and Elton John Tour of Australia and New Zealand. I didn’t really know what I was doing 26

to my surprise I ended up doing shows in Japan, Wellington (NZ), Hong Kong, Seoul, Bangkok and then onto Australia. That then led to me touring four months a year with Elton in Europe and I was based in the Sydney office of JPJ audio for the rest of the year.

When you’re travelling around the world with great friends, it’s not really work. It’s a laugh, interspersed with some hard work.

and in a funny case of mistaken identity; the touring crew thought I was famous Greek lighting Crew Chief, Nicky Koumos! Sadly for them, I was not that Nicky, but luckily for me I survived my first tour and I’m still in the entertainment business today.

Who are some of the other artists and bands you have worked with over the years?

Do you have any favourite memories or highlights?

I’ve worked with most big acts that have come to Australia: Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Guns N Roses, Eagles and Bette Middler to name a few.

My first World Tour was with P!NK on the Truth About Love Tour. P!NK is an incredible talent and it was the first world tour for the Australian company I work for, JPJ Audio (formerly Jands Production Services).

As far as my favourites go… I always enjoyed touring with John Farnham, Billy Joel and Elton John.

I currently find myself working for Sir Elton John on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour and I have to say it’s my favourite tour to date. I’m very lucky to be working with some really close friends and great people out on this tour. We started rehearsals in August of 2019 and our show in Bathurst will be our 163rd show of this tour!

You obviously travel a lot with your job, just where has it taken you? Do you enjoy being on the road, or does it come with its own challenges?

My travels have taken me far and wide: Tel Aviv.

Israel; Beirut, Lebanon; Barolo, Italy; Alasund, Norway; Paris, France and even to Bathurst NSW — and that’s just scratching the surface.

I’ve had a good run in my career and especially working for Sir Elton John. I was always reluctant to do Elton’s international work as part of the “Universal Crew,” because my colleagues were away from their homes and families in excess of 200 days a year. I was approached in 2015 said I would do the Australian Tour with them in late 2015 and much

Just what is involved in being a system engineer on a tour the scale of Farewell Yellow Brick Road? Can you talk us through a typical day?

...and I have to say it’s my favourite tour to date. I’m very lucky to be working with some really close friends...

It is my job to ascertain how many speakers each venue requires. We tour a system with a fixed amount of speaker enclosures. I use room modelling software to draw the venue and its audience geometry. I can insert my speaker system configuration and optimise the inter-box speaker enclosure angles for each specific venue and ensure a pleasurable listening experience from the front seat to the back. That said, most venues have been designed for sports, not music, and each venue has its own acoustic anomalies. It’s the job of the Front of House System Engineer to deliver a working Sound system for his FOH engineer to mix a show on.

I imagine with any live show there are plenty of stressful moments, can you tell us about any days when things just don’t go right?

Absolutely, there’s a lot than can go wrong with any live show. If the lights or video turn off and you can still hear, you’ve still got a show. No sound, No show.

Some days are harder than other, but if you surround yourself with the best people, you overcome and conquer, and to quote my mate DC, “when it’s Show Time, it’s Go Time.”

How does it feel to have your work bring you back to the Central West?

It’s where I grew up, my parents and brothers are there… It’s going to be emotional for sure.

How to get the BEST out of OUR COUNCILS with AMANDA SPALDING

ACCOUNTABILITY – Integrated Planning and Reporting

In last week’s column I said that I would write about how Councils should be accountable to their communities through their Integrated Planning and Reporting framework.

In my second column on 25th September 2019 I explained that ‘I was a member of the Department of Local Government’s Working Party that developed the Integrated Planning and Reporting reforms in 2009 and I will explain Integrated Planning and Reporting in more detail in future columns.

However, one of the main forms of accountability is the Council reporting to the community on what has been achieved towards the community’s needs and aspirations. This is done in a variety of ways, but I have to say that the implementation has generally been a disappointment throughout NSW. This is partly because of a lack of measures in the various plans against which the Council can be held accountable.’

Reforms to the Local Government Act have aimed to make Integrated Planning and Reporting the backbone of the Act as the aim is for councils to be held accountable by their communities (rather than the NSW Government). However, this does require a well informed community that understands how and what to hold their council accountable for. I aim to assist that through these columns.

The initial intention of the reforms was to get councils to be more strategic to develop and maintain sustainable communities that are recognised by their: • c onfidence, self-reliance and ability to assume responsibility for the future • social cohesion • functional economy • robust environment • sound infrastructure.

And develop strong and sustainable local government characterised by: • Good governance • Representative democracy and community support • Sound policy • Sufficient resources • Meaningful planning • Connectedness, and • Strong leadership.

The Integrated Planning and Reporting framework enables councils, with their communities, to ask and answer some key questions including: » Where are we now? » Where do we want to be in the future? » How will we get there? » How will we know when we’ve arrived?

These questions are asked at the beginning of each Council term (normally 4 years) and councils facilitate communities to identify their aspirations and priorities through community engagement and develop a Community Strategic Plan (CSP) for at least the next 10 years. This is not the council’s plan it is the community’s plan and is based on social justice principles of equity, access, participation and rights.

The CSP can be seen as the investment portfolio for the local government area as it is the way to engage other partners, (like the NSW Government, community and businesses) in delivering on the community’s priorities. The CSP is developed as a partnership between Council, state agencies, community groups and individuals. There was initially intended to be a ‘two-way exchange between state, regional and council planning’ and one of the challenges has been that this has never really been achieved. It tends to be a one way process as the requirement is that: ‘available state and regional draft plans and strategies were considered for the development of the CSP.’ Another Essential Element is ‘CSP identifies assessment methods for determining whether objectives are being achieved’. There is considerable weakness in the implementation of this as many councils do not identify meaningful assessment and performance methods against which performance can be judged.

The relationship between the 3 levels of plans is:

The DP details principal activities to be undertaken to achieve the objectives established in the CSP within the resources identified in the Resourcing Strategy. It is an essential element that the DP includes a method of assessment to determine the effectiveness of each principal activity in achieving the objectives in the CSP. The DP allocates high level responsibilities for each action or set of actions to a senior staff member.

The DP is reviewed each year during preparation of the Operational Plan. It seems that this has been misinterpreted by some councils to mean that the Delivery Program is a rolling program. It has been misinterpreted this way by Orange City Council, Cabonne and Blayney Councils. This was never the intention as the assessment measures in the DP need to stay the same over the Council term so the Council can be held accountable. If it is treated as a rolling program, then the goalposts keep on changing. You cannot be measured against a moving target.

The Delivery Program should only be changed during a Council term if there is a major change in the circumstances of a Local Government Area, like a major disaster. The revised Delivery Program needs to be exhibited to the community for 28 days for comment.

The same goes for the CSP. It needs to have static targets/ measures so that performance can be assessed. Some councils are moving it forward every year, which is not what was intended and does not achieve accountability.

The General Manager must ensure progress reports are provided to council with respect to DP at least every 6 months.

A Council is required to include in its Annual Report a report on its achievements in implementing its delivery program and the effectiveness of the principal activities undertaken in achieving the objectives at which those principal activities are directed (S428(1)). I have mentioned in several columns how poorly this is being implemented by our 3 local councils.

Parkes Shire Council is an example of good practice. It has a 4 year Delivery Program with assessment measures and reports regularly to its community on progress towards the objectives of the Community Strategic Plan. https://www.parkes.nsw. gov.au/your-council/plans-for-the-future/integrated-planningreporting/ The final opportunity for each elected Council to demonstrate its accountability to the community is through its End of Term Report which reports on the progress on implementation of the CSP and the effectiveness in achieving its objectives over the last term of council. It is required to be presented to the final meeting of the outgoing council – so, in August or September 2020. This should include the achievements of other partners in delivering the CSP. This is the ‘accountability report’ of the outgoing Council and should be read by electors when they are considering how to vote at the September 2020 local government elections.

To review the effectiveness in achieving objectives the End of Term Report should ask these questions:

The intention of the 4 year Delivery Program (DP) is to be the Council’s ‘accountability plan’ as the ‘DP directly addresses the objectives and strategies of the CSP, identifying the principal activities council will undertake in response’ to the CSP. The DP is Council’s plan. It is prepared after each ordinary election of councillors to cover 4 year period commencing the following 1 July. So, the next local government elections are in September 2020 and the new Plans will be developed to take effect from 1 July 2021.

1. Did Council do what it said it would do towards achieving the objectives of the Plan?

2. Did other partners in the process do what they said they would do towards achieving the objectives of the plan?

3. W ere these actions effective – did anything change or start to improve?

The newly elected Council in September 2020 will review the existing CSP and undertake community engagement to develop a new or revised CSP of at least 10 years. Part of that review will include considering the End of Term Report from the former Council. Some Councils start the process of reviewing the CSP before the election. This is not in the spirit of having a new Council as the roles of Councillors include: • to develop and endorse the community strategic plan, delivery program and other strategic plans, programs, strategies and policies of the council, and • to keep under review the performance of the council.

Investing can be done incredibly easily and cheaply when done sensibly and logically. There are plenty of high fee investment products out there and plenty of property spruiking seminars offering to buy a property in QLD at great expense to you, but the reality is that when it comes to investing, what’s simple is what works and what’s simple also comes with low fees. Invest for long term success and time will do most of the work for you. This all comes down to controlling what we can control.

4. Use your super powers for good Super is often seen as some kind of villain… it’s the best tax break in town and your best path to a nice retirement! It’s that simple. Make sure yours is in a low-cost fund and appropriately invested for your stage of life to make sure you capitalise on

your super. If you need help, make sure you are not charged a percentage-based advice fee as these will go up and up as your super grows.

For the record, I worked as a financial adviser in WA for 4 years during the mining boom and I’ve heard all the get-richquick schemes that get pitched to miners. I’ve heard all the mine workers stories of having a 5-year plan to get themselves set up financially which sadly turns into a truckload of debt.

Miners need a money plan for success. By all means explore your options, but make sure you talk with a truly independent financial adviser before you do anything!

BRINGS THE MUSIC OF LENNON TO THE ORANGE CIVIC THEATRE Following their sensational 16-week season in New York, Lennon: Through a Glass Onion is back in Australia. And the internationally acclaimed theatrical event celebrating the genius, music and phenomenon of John Lennon is coming to the Orange Civic Theatre on 8 February!

Created and performed by renowned Australian actor and musician John Waters and esteemed singer/pianist Stewart D’Arrietta, Lennon: Through a Glass Onion, is part concert and part biography, revealing the essence of the life and astonishing talent of one of the most admired icons of the past century.

The performance features 31 songs including “Imagine,” “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “Revolution,” “Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds,” “All You Need is Love,” “Come Together,” “Help,” “Working Class Hero,” “Mother,” “Jealous Guy,” and more.

For the audience the show is either an emotional trip down memory lane or a wonderful introduction to the life and times of one of the most fascinating icons of our time.

Waters and D’Arrietta first conceived and performed Lennon: Through a Glass Onion on a small stage at the Tilbury Hotel, Sydney in 1992— twelve years after Lennon’s death.

The show was an instant success and in the years that followed, Waters and D’Arrietta have toured and played sold out engagements at venues including The Sydney Opera House and a three-month engagement in London’s West End.

“It’s been fantastic the response the show is receiving, especially from the younger audiences that are coming along, some of whom were not even born when Lennon and The Beatles were recording and releasing their music. It’s a testament to the legacy of the man and his music that still excites and intrigues people to this day,” said Waters.

“It never ceases to amaze us how many people still request to see the show, even after our last lengthy tour, we’re constantly getting emails and messages asking when is the show coming back, so it’s great that the demand and interest is always there,” said Waters.

But premiering the show in New York last year and the response from American audiences was overwhelming, said Waters.

“It truly felt as though Glass Onion had in fact given the city what it needed, to reconcile their own sense of loss of a much loved ‘son’, as John Lennon came to be. Night after night, our audiences stood to acknowledge us, and it doesn’t get much better than that,” he said.

In late 2020, Lennon Through A Glass Onion will be touring through the United States with Symphony Orchestras, commencing with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.

TOUCH DOWN! A charter flight brought 88 members of Elton John's support crew to our region this week.

It was the first time a 737-300 had landed in Orange.

A plane of this size is able to land in Orange because our runway is 2200 metres long. (Bathurst’s is 1,700 metres.)

There was a local connection during yesterday’s milestone at Orange Airport with the first landing of a 737-300 on the new longer runway.

Both the pilot and the First Officer completed their flight training in Orange.

Pilot, Andrew Conway, yesterday remembered training at Orange airport with instructor Bill Hazelton in 2001.

As well as completing his pilot training here in 2009, First Officer, Aaron Cornish also went to school here in Orange.

Monday’s one-hour stopover by the 737 was an opportunity for a quick catch-up with Aaron’s mother and Orange resident Christine Cornish who came out to the airport to watch her son at work.

CALL OUT FOR VOLUNTEERGSE

AN – RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE OR Ronald McDonald House writes: Ronald McDonald House in Orange is inviting local residents who may be interested in volunteering at the house to attend an upcoming information session to be held on February 5.

Executive Officer of Ronald McDonald House Orange, Rebecca Walsh said the house has a wonderful group of volunteers, who have to date clocked up just over 57,000 hours of volunteering at the house.

“As with any organisation we often have a natural attrition when it comes to volunteers, or during periods in winter for example when people are unwell or when volunteers go on holidays, we always need to have a solid base of volunteers we can call on,” Ms Walsh said.

“Our volunteers come from all walks

of life from retirees, to retail workers or people working at the mines full-time, and they really are a fantastic bunch of people,” she said.

Volunteers can nominate how little or how often they would like to volunteer at the house for a variety of tasks that are required to be carried out on a daily basis. This can be from one four-hour shift a month to weekly volunteering.

Volunteering shifts include a morning housekeeping shift to clean all the family room areas, and prepare rooms for incoming families.

Administration volunteers can choose between a morning or an afternoon shift.

Overnight volunteers come on shift at 6pm and stay in the specially designed unit in the facility.

Ms Walsh said all training is provided

for volunteers, who are also required to undergo a Working with Children check and a Police check.

“But we are here to here to support our potential volunteers and help with that side of things,” she said.

“We extend a warm welcome to anyone who is thinking of becoming a volunteer to come along to one of our information sessions on February 5 for a tour of the house so we can show the work we do to support families in their time of need,” Ms Walsh said.

The latest statistics compiled by RMH Orange show that 675 families have stayed at the Orange house since it opened, for a total of 5,318 nights.

Ms Walsh said in a growing trend, the house is now providing free accommodation for mothers-to-be from a wide area of the central and far west who have been identified as having a high risk pregnancy.

“These mothers come to Orange for specialist appointments and are able to stay with us so they don’t have a long journey home the same day. Some women come to stay with us full-time so they can be closely monitored by staff at the hospital until their baby is born,” she said.

Words of Wisdom with Melise Coleman This week I caught up with the lovely Mollie Brell.

Where were you born? Manilla, NSW. What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? To treat others how you would like to be treated.

Mollie

What big world events were the most memorable while you were growing up? When I was at high school (I was in boarding school), war was declared.

To teenage girls, war was in history books, we didn’t take much notice of it, though we were soon made aware of it because a lot of the girls in school had brothers in the Army. The war was a worrying time, but we got through it.

What do you miss about the goodold days? I think I grew up in a good time, there’s lots of upsets happening these days.

What is your favourite childhood memory? I had to play make believe, we were on the land, I had four much older brothers, so I had to amuse myself.

It wasn’t until we moved closer to town that I had friends my own age. I suppose it was like being an only child.

What life advice would you pass along to your grandchildren? Be kind to each other.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I think I would have preferred Nursing. I was talked out of it by my Mother, in those days I think they had pretty awful jobs, in those days you did what Mum said. *laughs*

What was your first job? I worked in an office, I worked in Secretarial work until I was married.

What are you most proud of? My family, they have grown into lovely young adults.

Did you get an allowance? I remember I would get 20 cents on Saturday for polishing my Father’s boots. I didn’t think of it as an allowance in those days though, we had everything we needed, so that was it.

What did you get up to when you were young? When I was in my teens, I played a lot of tennis, and as I got older, I turned to golf. I’ve always been very healthy.

Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? A Principal at my boarding school, she was a very knowing and clever lady.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun now? I read, my daughter says that ‘I eat books’ *laughs* I love mysteries, “whodunnits,” light romances, and books about war time histories.

LEAVING CERTIFICATE RESULTS These young people eagerly scan through the Leaving Certificate results at the CWD office in January 1956.

Did you enjoy school? I tolerated school, *smiles* I was neither top nor bottom of the class. I left school while the war was still on. There wasn’t much opening for girls in those days, there was Teaching and Nursing and they weren’t for me, so I did a business course and that’s how I earnt my living, as a Secretary.

GOD’S WRATH

– AN UNCOMFORTABLE CONCEPT God as revealed in the Bible is always gracious, loving, merciful and good. But wrath, the Bible tells us, is also an attribute of God. He is wrathful against sin, which is defiance of him.

I cannot imagine that talk of divine judgement was at the time or ever will be very popular, but the Biblical writers engaged in it constantly: the Bible labours the point that just as God is good to those who trust him, so he is terrible to those who do not. Yet wrath - defined in my dictionary as deep, intense anger and indignation - seems somehow unworthy or beneath a good God, perhaps even cruel and malicious. But God’s wrath in the Bible is never the capricious, self-indulgent, irritable, morally ignoble thing that human anger so often is.

Instead, it is always a fair, right and necessary reaction to moral evil, like the righteous indignation of a judge condemning a convicted criminal. Since we all defy God (i.e. sin) we also all face God’s wrath, but Jesus offers himself as the solution to this awful problem.

Your deliberate harassment from Summer Street roundabout to the Woodward Street roundabout could have caused an accident, you need to have your license revoked. Luckily, I took down your licence plate number. It’s female drivers like you that gives all green P plate drivers a bad rap.

THUMBS UP to the lady who helped me last Wednesday when I had a bad fall over the curb near Tate’s Building Supplies. She stopped the bleeding from my head and nursed me until the ambulance arrived. I would like to thank you.
