We've certainly had a lot in the news lately to keep us feeling pretty ordinary, haven't we?

Hopefully this issue of OC Life will give you plenty of better things to take in, enough to make you feel considerably happier at least. We all feel so much better when our outlook is more positive than negative.

Speaking of positives, after Christmas I had a team meeting at our office and encouraged my team to have some fun with the magazine, all part of my desire this year to include more feel good stories for our readers. Well to my surprise and delight, and unknown to me, they have all put their heads together and come up with some innovative changes to our magazine, some you may have noticed over the last few weeks.

This week, they've gone a step further and I'll let you discover for yourself what is different. I'm so proud of them and it's great to see them so happy and motivated. I'm also very happy to give them the freedom to show off their various talents through their own work and ideas, not just following mine or someone else's instructions, and especially when they are so keen and happy to do it in a team environment. I like what they've done so far, I hope you do too.

Will reaches Highest Peak

in Africa — MELISE COLEMAN —

Will Parish’s bucket list looks a little something like this, Duke of ED *tick*, Kokoda Track *tick*, Everest Base Camp *tick*, Mera Peak *tick* and now, Mount Kilimanjaro *TICK*.

W

ill admits he’s very much an outdoorsy person and with that impressive bucket list, it’s not hard to see why.

“I find travelling to other countries gives me a better understanding of the way people live and also the struggles they have in their lives and how lucky we are in our Country.”

Will was the first person at James Sheahan Catholic High School to receive the gold Duke of Edinburgh award in 2012. After he left school, he was then asked to be a mentor along the Kokoda Track for a group from Western Australia. Will explained, “I found this a very rewarding yet challenging experience.

The challenge of the track and also the challenge of motivating a group to believe in themselves and achieve something for their own personal experience.”

The next challenge Will was to take on, was the trek to Everest base camp, though this was delayed due to the earthquake in Nepal.

Motivated by a desire to help, the trekking group decided to raise money in a muchneeded effort to rebuild communities in Nepal. The money raised by the group went to rebuilding a school in the mountainous regions of Nepal and the money raised from 4

the Orange community was enough for an entire classroom. Yay Orange!

In appreciation the Nepalese gave Will naming rights to the room. “It is now named after an Orange local, who pioneered the use of oxygen in the pursuit of climbing Mount Everest, his name is George Finch.”

After finally getting to Everest base camp with his group, Will then returned to climb Mera peak which is an impressive 6654m, this time he was mountaineering through glaciers and ice fields and pushed through a jaw dropping -33 degrees at the top.

Last year Will was contacted by the company that ran the Mera peak trek, they asked if he would be interested in going to Africa to climb Kilimanjaro (the highest peak in Africa), obviously his response was yes! “I only had a few months to prepare for this trek, so with some hard training, going to the gym, PT sessions and a quick pack, I was off to a mountain that was on the top of my bucket list.”

“With the time restraints I had, I was only able to do the climb itself, (there are many routes to choose the climb Kilimanjaro,) our group picked the hardest route which meant little time to get used to the altitude on the

way up. It was one of the most interesting routes up the mountain, from lush green forests to trekking through a desert, to the snow covered peak of Kilimanjaro, also passing extinct volcano rim on the way to the top.”

“We started off at 12am in the morning and trekking to the peak would arrive around 7am to a magnificent 360-degree view. The last 1200 metres are straight up, that’s why it takes so long, plus you have to walk really slow in high altitude, this is so you don’t get headaches and altitude sickness. Every mountain is different but reaching the top of the mountain is an incredible experience, it lasts for a lifetime.”

It took Will and his fellow group members seven days to get to the top and two days to trek back down again.

“It’s the chance of a lifetime to climb these mountains and the people you meet on these hikes become your friends, and they stay friends for life. You each share an interest, and that’s to get to the top, so we all encourage one another constantly.”

“The thrill and the adrenaline of conquering another mountain left me wondering what’s next? maybe a mountain in South America.”

...Every mountain is different but reaching the top of the mountain is an incredible experience, it lasts a lifetime...

“THOSE WHO CANNOT REMEMBER THE PAST ARE CONDEMNED TO REPEAT IT.” It’s a quote that came to mind this past week, after we were given interesting article from Orange City Life reader Don Perry.

Don’s father, Daniel Perry, was long-serving Orange City Council alderman. He spent more than three decades in local government, served six years as deputy mayor and was actively involved in many council committees. Mr Perry was even awarded the British Empire medal in recognition of his service to Orange.

What caught our attention in this article published in the Midstate Observer in 1986, were the quite prescient views held by Mr Perry when it came the future of Orange’s water supply.

WARYK(Rooster) “I grew up on a 10,000-acre farm working with sheep and chickens. I’m a chook breeder (hence the nickname) as well as a wheelchair racer and I’m currently in year nine at Orange Christian School.

At the moment I’m trying to raise $10,000 for school necessities eg. bags, lunchboxes, books, pencil cases, for kids who have lost everything in the bushfires.

I thought, after everything

the families have been through, instead of putting the parents under more stress I’d raise the money for the kids so they can go back to school and concentrate on learning. So we are going to partner with our local Officeworks and organise Back to School packs so these families can focus on other needs.

So, to raise the money, on Australia Day I did a 10km wheelchair marathon, in Sydney

HOLMES coming sixth place over the line and placing seventh in the juniors. I was pretty happy with the result, it’s one of the biggest marathons I’ve completed.

With just over $1,500 raised we are still hoping for more donations, anything you give will be greatly appreciated.”

Water was a particular area of interest for Mr Perry who played no small part in the improving of Orange’s water and sewerage infrastructure. He was greatly involved in the underground drainage system built in the 50s and also development of Suma Park Dam, from the funding through to the type of wall and construction.

But when asked what Orange needs most, Mr Perry answered simply, ‘more water’.

If Orange is to cope with population growth, Mr Perry told the Observer’s correspondent some 34 years ago, the wall at Suma Park Reservoir will have to be raised and another water reservoir site will

have to be found.

Not only that, Mr Perry goes on to advocate for the recycling and reuse of treated sewerage water, something that is officially back on Council’s agenda in 2020.

The extended drought has certainly put all things water in the public eye of late and our Council is currently investigating some 20 potential water projects to secure the city supply.

Stormwater harvesting continues to do its bit to top up our dwindling reservoirs and tough water restrictions have dramatically reduced demand — 119 litres per person per day is pretty extraordinary.

These measures have served to pushed back the need for tighter water restrictions, but only good rain will get us out of our current predicament.

Thankfully, there seems to be a bit of that around at the moment — too much in some places, but we could certainly use a bit more!

Let’s just hope the enthusiasm for improving our city’s water security doesn’t wash away when droughtbreaking rains do finally fall and the dams fill again.

If there’s one thing the past has taught us, it’s that there will always be another drought.

Ever wondered what happens once our Showgirl is donned with her beautiful sash?

We caught up with Annie Hazelton 2019 Orange Show Girl Winner to find out.

orn in Cudal, Annie spent most of her time in Orange whether it be for speech and drama, debating or sporting events, emphasising, “I feel very much like an Orange girl.”

Annie was inspired to compete for the Showgirl sash with the hope she could inspire more young women to use their voices in the Agriculture sector.

“It’s really important that women have a voice in

agriculture. I think it’s getting bigger and I think it’s getting stronger, but in particular young women should get involved and get their ideas across as well. The resilience of rural women is outstanding and we should stay as involved as we can in our communities and that involves our show societies.”

With a love for competitive debating and adjudicating, Annie has recently just returned from a trip to the World Debating Championships which were held in Thailand,

this year Annie was on the judging panel. Her showgirl roots have sparked a will to boost our public speaking programs.

“From those I have spoken to they’ve told me it’s also really important to have a ‘passion project’ that you’re working on, for me, that’s the CWA and their public speaking competition. We are very lucky to have an organisation like the CWA and I am excited to bring some fresh ideas into the mix.

When I first entered competitive debating at University in the city I was gobsmacked. I think it’s really important to keep up to date with what is happening in the city and I think the CWA is the way to do that.”

Annie mentioned her proudest moments were continuing to establish their relationship with the council and getting more involved with the National Field Days and the Orange Wine Week.

“This has been such a great experience for me. It reinforced the value of community and importance of community, as well as the importance of supporting each other particularly during tough times. It’s also meant I’ve had conversations with many people I wouldn’t have the opportunity to if I wasn’t showgirl.

“It is an amazing opportunity for young women, I think one of the myths that people believe is they are expected to have an agricultural background, my Dad is a Farmer but I don’t work in Agriculture, it’s important that we emphasise it’s not just about representing the show society, but the community, which includes people that work in all different professions.

“With that, I think people being involved in the show society is absolutely critical probably now more than ever before, a stage in which we are seeing drought, bushfires and other natural disasters occur, it’s really important that we get in and support our farmers and our community members.”

...This has been such a great experience for me.

“I love it! I've always loved being on skates and I like the speed of it,” says Sharon Tilston, who discovered the sport of roller derby nine years ago and hasn’t looked back.

“I loved skating in the 80s... I learned to skate in the Australian theatre, what’s now the Salvation Army… so when the posters went up about Roller Derby in 2011, I jumped in with both feet!

There was nowhere to skate this side of the blue mountains and I wanted to skate.”

Roller Derby is fast-paced contact sport played on roller skates. Teams designate a scoring player, known as a ‘Jammer,’ who scores points by passing the opposition’s ‘blockers’ while they move circularly around a track.

“It’s a race to gain points by passing opposition skaters —that's the short summary,” said Sharon, who is roller derby referee.

“Referees have positions, the same as the players have positions, and we are looking for people who are moving outside of the track to gain positions, people who are using illegal blocking zones, people who are using excessive force during the game… and general

rule breaking.”

Roller derby is a most definitely a contact sport, with players allowed physically block opposing skaters using their bodies.

For Lyndell Newman, the contact side of the game was something that attracted her to the sport seven years ago.

“There weren’t that many female sports with contact and I saw it and thought it looked like the sport for me,” said Lyndell, who previously played a variety of team sports.

“It’s fun and I like that it is on skates, which is just a bit different to most other sports. And the people that do it, really like it. It is a sport that you choose to do, not just a sport you've been brought up in.”

Central West Roller Derby is always on the lookout for new players and whether you haven’t skated in years or have barely laced on a skate in your life, there is place for you in the sport.

“Just turn up,” said Lyndell. “We've had people who haven't skated since the 80s who've come back and they find it’s like riding a bike.”

“And we can coach from absolute can't-standup beginners,” said Sharon. “We train in Orange on Tuesday nights, Bathurst on Wednesdays and then we alternate Sunday afternoons between Bathurst and Orange.”

COUNCIL AT WORK LED streetlight project to provide long-term benefits Work to upgrade more than 4,900 streetlights in Orange to energy efficient technology has began as part of a major energy efficiency project that will save hundreds of thousands in electricity bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

New pipeline triggerpoint boosts access to water source Orange City Council can now pump water from the Macquarie River more often, as a temporary move to help Orange through the drought.

The NSW Government has approved a change in the trigger-point when pumping can begin from river, down from a flow-rate of 108 megalitres a day in the river at the off-take point, to 38 megalitres a day.

Announcing the change, Upper House MP, Sam Farraway said the application from Orange City Council to change the operating conditions of the Macquarie River pipeline to allow pumping during lower flows will provide the community with vital access to additional water supply.

Orange City Council is part of the Southern Lights NSW project which will see over 75,000 LED streetlights deployed in 41 Local Government Areas across Southern NSW from Bega to Broken Hill.

The switch to LED technology will see a 1,240 MWh reduction per year in power use, delivering savings of $485,000 each year in maintenance and electricity costs.

Orange Mayor Reg said Orange City Council was committed to becoming more sustainable, and the LED upgrade is just one initiative in Council’s strategies to achieve energy and operational efficiencies.

“Street-lighting is a significant expense for Council, costing around $1.3M each year, and with more than 4,900 streetlights across Council’s footprint, the upgrade will go a long way to reducing costs and providing significant long-term savings,” Cr Reg Kidd said.

“LEDs are far more energy efficient, require less maintenance and have a significantly longer life.

Council is investing $2.5M to complete the bulk upgrade, with the costs expected to be recouped within a period of 5 years.”

Work begins on amenities upgrade at Brabham sportsfields Work has begun on new change rooms and public toilets on the western side of the Sir Jack Brabham sporting fields.

The $791,000 project includes : • 2 change rooms for up to twenty people each, which also include 2 showers and 2 toilets • 4 female and 4 male public toilets, together with an accessible toilet and a storage area.

Orange City Council awarded the $664,000 construction contract to local firm Renascent Regional.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said he’s pleased to be working in partnership with the State Government to deliver a boost for one of Orange’s main sporting venues.

“On the western side of the grounds, the only public toilets were built a long time ago and in a location that’s a long way from where most of the sporting activity is now centred,” Cr Reg Kidd said.

“The new building will be alongside the softball diamonds and next to the fields where cricket and soccer is being played.”

Orange City Council’s Sport & Recreation Committee chair Cr Jason Hamling, is pleased at the steady improvement in the facilities offered to the sporting community at the Brabham sporting fields.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement of the new triggerpoint for the Macquarie Pipeline.

“At the peak of the winter sports season, hundreds of youngsters and adults can be found at Brabham, and the quality of what’s offered to make that sporting experience even better is steadily improving,” Cr Jason Hamling. “As well as the new amenities block, it’s good to see the new under-cover, mini tiered seating stands in place alongside each of the football fields.”

“Independent modelling which assumes years of drought conditions continuing, predicts that there will be still be enough flow in the river to make a difference to the community of Orange,” Cr Reg Kidd said.

In the last twelve months, (from 1/2/2019 to 31/1/2020) there were 148 days when the mean flow in the Macquarie River was greater than 38 ML/day.

Council asking for bridge photos Orange City Council is looking for any historical images of a bridge in Forest Road, south of Orange.

The brick bridge over Gosling Creek was built just south of the Gosling Creek dam reserve.

When the road was widened many years ago, it’s understood the shaped sandstone capping on the side of the bridge was removed, and then dropped into the waters of the creek below.

The current low water levels have exposed the sandstone

blocks.

A crew has now used a heavy excavator to lift the blocks from the creek bed.

The carved stones are now being stored, but the plan is to incorporate them into a heritage feature to be built nearby.

To help guide the design of the feature, council staff are appealing for any historic photos which could show how the bridge looked originally, and how the carved sandstone was used.

The Inner Wheel Club of Orange to an evening of wine, fine food and art — all for a good cause.

“There’ll be a two-course meal, an art auction and lots of fun,” said Inner Wheel member Maria Bargwanna.

The ‘Wine, Dine and let the Art Shine’ evening is being held 29 February in the Dalton Room at Duntryleague Golf Club will begin with a wine tasting from Printhie Wines, followed by nibbles and a two-course meal.

After dinner there will be an auction of 31 of original oils, water colours and prints.

“So there are the original paintings and prints, and also four beautiful imported vases and a wooden display bowl that is all going to be auctioned for our two charities,” said Maria.

Cord Blood Research is the national fundraising

project for Inner Wheel Australia and so far more $3 million has been raised for this potentially lifechanging work.

The other cause supported by this Inner Wheel Club of Orange fundraiser is the Kisaru Nkera Initiatives (KINI). Run by Barbara Parkins, Kini works to provide education and health support to the Maasai people of Kenya. They are also on a mission to end the practice of female genital mutilation.

All art from the auction has been kindly donated by one of the members of the Inner Wheel Club of Orange.

ALL YOU NEED IS ‌ The Beatles had it right all along, I reckon.

Just like with UFO’s, Time Travel, and dare I say it Climate Change, you don’t have to actually believe in something to either appreciate it, tolerate it or get into it. Like most people in Orange, you’ll be reading this fine magazine on a Thursday afternoon, either over a coffee, or after work having picked one up outside the Supermarket or somewhere similar on your way home.

Which means you’ve got about halfa-day or so to get yourself organised if you’ve forgotten. Yep, tomorrow is February 14th, (Saint) Valentine’s Day to be precise. And woe betide even the non-believers if you forget your other half on this special day.

I’m not sure I’d ever be called a ‘romantic’, but both me and Mrs T are kinda into the whole Valentine’s Day thing. Sure, most people are when they first start dating, and I know there are some who rely on the ol’ chestnuts of “every day should be Valentine’s Day� or even “I’m not gonna buy flowers just because some TV ad tells me to� to let it slip through to the ‘keeper. Ok. Points taken. But, like anyone with tin lids, things get quite hectic in the last two weeks of January and the first two weeks of February, so Feb 14th is an ideal chance to sort of reset the clock and remember what’s important. A nice smoochy card with love hearts all over it, some chocolates - Caramel Snows for Mrs, and Cherry Liqueurs for me - and maybe some other little knick-knack. Not too commercial, not too cheesy, just a lovely way to say hi and slow things down a bit in this frenetic world of ours. It's been some nice takeaway for dinner for the past

few years, with St Val getting his nod on a weekday in the recent past, but with it being a Friday and all this time around, we’ll head out for a bite, with Mr happy to go wherever Mrs chooses.

if the Force is with me and we’re very lucky to be well-catered for around here in both departments. If I’m on the ball I will have remembered to buy a fourpack of top quality Ice-creams from the supermarket on the way home from work to chuck in the freezer to have with a cuppa when we get home. Two ice-creams each will be a stretch if we’re choc full of either Larb Gai or Tikka Masala, but we might have a crack. It’s Valentine’s Day after all, and it doesn’t count on your waist. We just binged another show on Netflix (The Witcher, if you want to know), so we will have to find a new one this week to get into so there’s an episode waiting for us when we get home.

Excuse me for having an opinion, but those who poo-poo on Valentine’s Day, using the excuse of commercialism are taking the easy way out. For us, a birthday in June and November, and an anniversary in September, Feb 14th divides our year into quarters very neatly I think when it comes to ‘keeping the flame alive’ (ugh, that sounded schmaltzy, but you know what I mean).

Sending a love heart text is always a good one to split up the working day too. Don’t judge me for being behind in the tech world, but I recently learned how to make the love heart (or the balloons, or the laughing emoji) scatter fill the whole screen. Small things.

Just what is a wicking bed?

Words of Wisdom with Melise Coleman This week we caught up with Harry Hughes, a very wise, humble and hardworking man.

Where were you born? Wellington, NSW

If you could describe your life in one sentence, what would it be? Too short. *smiles* What are the most important lessons you've learned in life? To listen and not talk too much.

What’s the secret to a happy marriage? Well I chose a gooden and she chose a good one too *smiles* We’ve been married 65 years; I remember asking her to marry me in 1953. I met her when I was the Boss of the Post Office in Coolah and Olga was a Telephonist. I saw her and I thought, ‘Oh, she’s not too bad.’ *smiles* What were your hobbies/interests growing up?

We used to do a lot of rabbiting and swimming in the creek. We were lucky we had a nice creek running around the edge of the farm, which is where we all learnt to swim.

What events were the most memorable in your life? Well it’s not necessarily a good one but I can remember I nearly drowned in the creek in Manildra, my older brother pulled me out, I was very lucky there, I think I was only two or three years of age and I just went out too far.

What’s your naughtiest moment growing up?

I did some awful things, I remember taking my brother to school on a bike, he was sitting on the front on the handle bars and I put the brakes on and of course he kept going *laughs* he wouldn’t have forgotten that either, it took a bit of skin off him.

What was your first job? When I left school, I

started work with a Bush Plumber, working on windmills and things like that. I sat for the PMG exam and passed it easily enough and started work as a Telegram boy in Molong. The only claim to fame was I passed the Morse Telegraph test at 17 years old.

Did you get an allowance? No, I can remember when I was a Plumber, I would get 12 shillings a day which was pretty good. When I joined the PMG it was about five pounds a fortnight. We were supplied with uniforms luckily, there wasn’t much money left over, I used to try and save one pound per fortnight, and I would keep a pound to spend for myself. A pair of nice trousers were about two pounds.

What took you a long time to learn? Morse coding. It’s a very slow process, you can’t learn overnight. You can learn what each letter is but then you’ve got to be able to read it with the clicks.

I can still do it now, last year I was out at the National Field Days and we had a line connected to Beechwood in Victoria and people could write a message and you could send them to Beechworth and send it to people.

What are you most proud of? My wife and family. We have six kids, they are all good kids, and she’s [Olga] is still learning…*smiles* Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? Olga’s father, he was my boss at one stage, He was a very sensible man, he looked after the junior members of staff.

WHAT ARE THE FRIENDS OF THE ORANGE REGIONAL MUSEUM?

If you’ve had a hankering to see the Old Dubbo Gaol for yourself, now is the time!

riends Orange Regional Museum (FORM) are organising a historical tour to Dubbo, the main destination is to Old Dubbo Gaol which ties in with the Orange Regional Museum Exhibition Underworld: Mugshots from the Roaring Twenties.

Travelling by bus from Orange, the bus will leave from the front of the Museum at 9.00am on Sunday March 1.

Old Dubbo Gaol is a state heritage listed “must see.” This remarkably complete and intact gaol operated for 119 years from 1847 to 1966 and is still nestled in the main street of Dubbo. The gaol is representative of powerful, surprising and dark moments in Australian prison history. It houses important collections such as the hangman’s kit and gallows, and unforgettable experiences such as the dark cells and the bird’s-eye view from the watchtower.

President of FORM, Phillip Schwebel

explained, “Firstly, we will have a guided tour of the Gaol. The guide will take us around and share stories about the History of the site.

It will be tailored to suit our group and will allow a lot of questions you may have to be answered.

“It will also be intriguing to have a tour of Dubbo Regional Museum, especially as Orange Regional Museum will soon be opening a new semi-permanent display on the history of the Orange region. We will be able to compare and contrast the two exhibitions.

This will be followed by a visit to Dubbo Regional Museum where we will have a Behind the Scenes Guided Tour by one of the WPCC’s highly qualified staff who will give us an insight into Dubbo’s interesting, inspiring and occasionally tragic past. We will be given a unique opportunity to examine some of the museum’s artefacts.”

The bus will return to Orange by 5.00pm The outing will be $60 for members and $75 for non-members, this includes the bus, entry and guided tours of both sites.

First Day at School “School days, school days, dear old golden rule days, Readin’ an’writin’ an’ ‘rithmetic taught to the tune of a hickory stick.”

— Will Cobb and Gus Edwards 1907 — This month thousands of eager, bright eyed little people set off for school for the first time. Some walked, some rode bicycles, some were taken by bus while others were driven in the family car.

Mostly they went into air-conditioned classrooms and sat at little tables on chairs made specially for their age group. There were probably no more than thirty in each class and many of the newcomers would have already been to Preschool.

When the above song was written in 1907, education was probably a little different from today but certainly fairly similar to the experiences of the Oral History group who this month reached far back in their memories for their first day at school.

Many of our group have lived in the bush and had a long way to go to school.

Elma was only five when she walked to her little school at Eurunderie through a vineyard and over several paddocks to wait for her teacher who drove along the dusty road to pick up his pupils and take them to school.

Jeff and Keith both rode horses quite long distances, but John had the advantage of going to his father’s school just across the playground from his house.

Monica and Pauline had a subsidised school on their property and were taught by a teacher who boarded at their home.

“There were four families of children taught in the shearing shed so the shearing could only be done in school holidays,” Pauline told us.

“The teacher was frightened of frill-necked lizards so of course we placed two so that she would trip over them when she came in the door.”

Bronwyn decided she had had enough at lunchtime and walked four miles home.

Tim started doing correspondence lessons supervised by his mother but later started at Inverell primary school where his mother took him on his first day.

“I liked it,” said John. “It made me feel proud to be Australian”

“I beat my mother home,” he told us.

Dick went home for lunch on his first day at school at Trinity Grammar held in the Bluestone building in Anson St. “It’s on again this afternoon!” I told my mother in great surprise.

It certainly could be very confusing when you were only five.

Lyn told us about a little girl who went to school for the first time and came home and burst into tears.

“Didn’t you like it?” asked her mother in concern. “I loved it”, she replied,” but you always told me that I would go to school one day, and I want to go againnot just for one day!”

Leslye also had a story of a little boy whose mother explained to him to his great distress that he would have to go to school for at least another ten years.

“Will you come and pick me up when I am fifteen? “he asked his mother tearfully.

Doreen was confused when her older sister came home at the beginning of the summer holidays before she started school and told her that the school was breaking up. “Why would they break up a perfectly good school?” she wondered and was relieved when she finally arrived for her first day to find what a good

We certainly had rather a structured way of looking at things, perhaps because the Second World War had not long finished. We did a lot of marching around the playground perhaps emulating the armed forces we had seen so much of during the war.

In fact, some of us remembered the air raid drills we had when the enemy seemed very close to our shores.

“We had trenches dug near our school in Anson St,” said Dick. “The air raid siren would sound from the Fire Station for a practice and we would have to go ‘in an orderly fashion’ to the trenches and file in.”

I remember as a very small child doing the same thing in an air raid practice and having to enter trenches half filled with water after heavy rain of the night before.

We carried “air raid bags” with a comic to read while the bombs were falling, a cork to put between our teeth to prevent us biting our tongues, and cotton wool to put in our ears, apparently to stop us going deaf in the bomb blasts.

Life has certainly changed since those days when the discipline was often harsh, and we learnt by rote. Some of us boiled a billy over an open fire for the teacher’s cup of tea, others remembered with horror writing a thousand lines as a punishment and the ring formed by children in the playground to watch two boys punching out a grievance while the whole school looked on.

It was certainly not better than today—just different!

Most of us would be aware of the damage that falling trees or tree limbs can do. We’ve all seen a fallen tree or tree branch at one time or another during our lives, just last week I was driving down Woodward Street and saw a branch fall from a tree just missing a passing car. It wasn’t a huge branch but certainly big enough to do some damage if it landed on someone or something as it fell.

Some time back my wife noticed that one of our trees was looking a bit sadder than it should, and given where it was located, there was a fear that if not dealt with, it may fall on the house at some stage. We kept an eye on it and last week decided to get some advice. We called Grant Stanford from Austrim Tree Services and asked him to come and have a look at it and then give us some advice. Grant quickly established that the tree was infested with borers, and there was also a couple of dead branches at the back, his advice was pretty clear, given the extent of the damage and showing us how far the borers had gone, it had to go!

We took Grant’s advice and he removed the tree for us. My wife and I now feel at peace.

Grant’s advice and the excellent manner in which he went about his job impressed us. We felt justified in first, seeking some professional advice and then having such a great tradesman carry out the work.

The lesson in this for others is, if you have a tree you’re concerned about, for your peace of mind, seek some professional advice sooner rather than later and then go from there. How to get the BEST out of OUR COUNCILS with AMANDA SPALDING

CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPECTATIONS Over recent months through this column, I have received quite a lot of feedback. It seems that people have enjoyed what I have had to say while also discovering some of the inner workings of Council.

Councils by their nature can sometimes appear quite impersonal in their dealings, even downright boring, but, to be fair, Councils have a lot of compliance issues and protocols to contend with, and given the sensitivities associated with many individual case issues, there is no one size fits all solutions to much of what they have to deal with. Contending with the modern media also adds a further dimension to the way they deal with things.

Many Councils have a Customer Service Charter that lets residents know what they are entitled to expect from Council, for example, the timescales for responses and the aspiration that your issue will be resolved as quickly as possible (that is your phone call will not be transferred round and round in circles with nobody taking responsibility for it). I had difficulty finding a Customer Service Charter on the websites of our nearby councils until I found Dubbo Regional Council’s Customer Experience Charter that included this.

On further digging on Dubbo’s website it seems that there are different Customer Service Standards for different services, and they are not easy to find, so difficult to hold Council accountable to.

An English council I worked at had a customer service standard that telephone calls would be answered within 5 rings.

Staff discovered that if they answered the phone after more than 5 rings this would be recorded in the system and be reported back to management as poor performance. If they could not answer within 5 rings and did not answer at all the call would not be reported on the system, so it was as if it had never happened.

So, staff would just let the phones ring and their performance was reported as good. The unintended consequences of measurement is a very interesting topic and the way to overcome it is to have regular (possibly every 2 years) customer satisfaction surveys so that the customers can give qualitative evidence about how they feel about various services, to be added to the numbers for a proper evaluation of performance and how the community feels about their council.

I am often asked what level of customer service can be reasonably expected when dealing with Council. It is a good question so I thought I might touch on a few examples that readers may find helpful, especially following some of the horror stories we hear about the time Council takes to answer or respond to various issues.

One of the main issues that people raise with me in Orange is the inordinate length of time it can take the Council to resolve Development Applications. As large organisations Councils often find that one area seems to be working in the opposite direction to another. If you look at the Activate Orange strategic vision, which outlines how Orange Council will support economic and employment growth, the Development Department seems to be doing the complete opposite. I started

out in local government in economic development and had many struggles with the Planners to make sure they followed through and treated businesses with proper care and attention to secure economic and employment growth.

Of course, I ended up in charge of the Planners so that I could ensure a seamless quality service for all customers!!

Feedback I have received to my Orange City Life columns has included the issue of noxious weeds, particularly where a property owner was allowing weeds to grow and the seeds were blowing on to a neighbour’s land and spreading the weeds and neither the council nor Local Land Services would do anything about it.

There was an article about a blackberry bush in Orange this week which ended up with the Council and State Government pointing fingers of blame at each other.

It is often difficult for customers to find who is accountable for issues like noxious weeds when they are batted backwards and forwards between local and State government.

I wrote last week about cost shifting from State to local government and there is also a lot of responsibility shifting from State government to councils. There is also a habit of the NSW Government reducing its resources and therefore, service levels, that tends to leave the Council holding someone else’s baby. This is where Council and Councillors should display their worth to local communities by advocating on their behalf. However, the NSW legislation that requires that Councillors act like a Board of Directors has tended to reduce the willingness and ability of Councillors to represent the community. I have been contacted by people seeking advice from me that I would normally see as the role of Councillors.

Based on my experience as the General Manager of Hay Shire Council, let me give you a very general idea of the most common issues that the public raise with Councils.

They include: • Development Applications – for/against and delays that are costing money • Waste management – including bins not emptied and the management of the tip • Traffic and road issues – including State roads • Allegedly dangerous trees – chop them down, stop them dropping leaves and seeds • Neighbour issues e.g. barking dogs • Water quality, pressure and leaks.

Some customers can be unreasonable.

At Rockdale City Council we used to get phone calls from customers asking council staff to come and clear up the leaves falling off trees onto their property.

That is not a council responsibility, but I remember one occasion when a customer came into the council to protest and emptied a black dustbin bag full of leaves all over one of the customer service staff. The core responsibility of all staff is customer service and the customer service staff can often get the brunt of customer reaction to the poor performance of their colleagues.

Most councils have a Customer Request Management system, but I could only find Customer Request forms on Blayney’s website of our 3 local councils. There is also an App called Snap, Send, Solve. I am not sure how much that gets used locally so I might try it out!

The good thing with a Customer Request Management system is that it can provide statistics about the issues that are being raised by customers; which staff are dealing with specific issues; whether they have been referred to another organisation, and how quickly they are being resolved. This is a useful management tool about performance, service standards and the distribution of resources. It is also a good way to assess whether staff are taking a ‘can do’ attitude and taking responsibility for ensuring outcomes for customers, or flicking issues on to others.

THE ANNUAL GOLDEN EAGLE CLASSIC

H

osted by Orange City Bowling Club, the Golden Eagle Classic Pairs will be on from Monday February 17th to Thursday 20th, next week. The prize money and trophies total an incredible $16,000.

Something the Orange City Bowling club are very proud to be hosting for the 52nd year, as it remains one of Orange’s most-loved annual competitions, attracting some of the world’s best players.

This year the age range is quite impressive, the youngest age being 21 years and the oldest being late 70s, the National Ranking event is set to take place rain, hail or shine. Players will travel from as far as South Australia, and Melbourne, and as close as Condobolin, Dubbo and Molong.

Chairman of the Golden Eagle Jim Gersbach recalls, “There was one wash out in 1986, otherwise every other year it’s been played. For many of our players they rock up in walkers and come to life when they get out on that green and size up the opposition.”

many of the players have been coming for the past 16-18 years or even longer!”

What starts off as a round robin type of competition soon becomes a knockout competition, even when it comes down to the nitty gritty it is still said to be fun, with many choosing to stay and watch the finals which take place on the Thursday afternoon.

The unique trophy is a crowd favourite and rightly so, made of bronze, wood and a stem’s mould that is made out of butter. The Golden Eagle trophy stands just over one metre tall, with a wingspan of 95 centimetres.

Secretary Manager Neil Southcombe added, “It’s a big week for us, the bowlers are bowling from 9am through to 5pm in the afternoon. They are on the green the whole time so it keeps them pretty busy, but they all know how it works.

Even though it’s an older man’s sport you’ve got to be quite fit because there’s no chance to sit, they are on their feet for long periods of time and there is quite a bit of walking involved.”

Last year’s winners from Victoria, David Maloney and Adrian Bates will be returning again this year.

With that being said, we wish our locals all the very best in taking out the Eagle this year.

A new exhibition now on display at the Orange Regional Gallery is a celebration of iconic and well-loved works from the gallery’s permanent collection.

he ‘Collection Highlights’ exhibition includes works from modern artists such as Ian Fairweather, Hans Heysen, Grace Cossington Smith and Brett Whiteley shown alongside contemporary artists including Kevin Connor, Harrie Fasher, Emily Kngwarreye, Margaret Loy Pula, and David Serisier.

Recent photographic acquisitions are also presented in the foyer.

“It is really a very strong collection for any regional gallery in Australia,” said Gallery Director Bradley Hammond.

“I think many people would be surprised by just how many fantastic pieces we have. Many of them are often stored so we really like the opportunity to show the community what a strong collection we have.

“With this exhibition we are bringing out some of the highlights and placing them alongside one another in fresh and different ways to how people may have seen them before.”

The Orange Regional Gallery’s ever-growing collection includes over 1500 works of Australian art from the 1920s to today. The collection was founded on the Mary Turner Collection, which she presented to the city of Orange in 1982.

A significant donation of 35 paintings followed in 2013 from the personal collection of Jim Cobb, and numerous other generous donations have allowed the collection to grow.

“This collection belongs to the people of Orange and it is really a great expression of community generosity,” said Bradley.

“Many works have come to us from the generosity of artists, collectors, and we have great community groups such as the friends of Orange Regional Gallery and the Orange Regional Arts Foundation who help raise money for the purchase of works to come into the collection.

“Many great pieces have been purchased for the collection over the years and so you will see many of those on display in this exhibition.”

“No, before then I'd never touched a hammer,” said Tom, whose interest arose only after seeing old farm shed timbers being razed and burned.

“I was working on a corporate farm and they started pulling down all the shed and just burning everything,” said Tom, who decided he couldn’t stand by and let it happen.

“It was just the potential; you could do things with it — and there was masses of it. So, I just started taking time off work and taking the timber out.”

Tom started to build a few tables on his days off and it wasn’t long before someone asked him to make one for them.

“I got one order, then the next and it just kept growing and getting bigger and bigger… I didn't even mean to start it!

It just took off and I was really lucky in a sense, because it was at a time when the farm was selling and it was dry, we were in drought and there wasn't much work to do on the farm.”

Four years later, Tom has relocated his business, TK Reclaimed, to a workshop at Spring Terrace and the orders keep coming in.

“It has doubled every year since I started,” said Tom, who is now considering hiring someone to help him out in the workshop.

“I think there is a throwback; people are over consumerism and that turnover of products... they want something real that you can touch and feel as opposed to something made only to last a couple of years and then throw away so I think there is a big call for it.

“People want to recycle more and that's a big part of it… people want a real product and something Australian made.

“And it is satisfying when I see a finished table, making something out of nothing. Here was something that was going to get burnt down, wasted or torn down and all I did was spend the time just to go and get it.”

On Saturday 8th February, teams got together to have some fun and play softball and a modball (a modified version of softball allowing younger kids to enjoy the game and have some fun). Bletchington Speed Demons played the Cardinal Falcons, and the Bletchington Rebels played the Bletchington Bombers. There was lots of cheering and great sportsmanship all round.

FOR BUSHFIRE RECOVERY!

Orange’s Badlands Brewery has come up with a thirst-quenching plan to help communities and wildlife areas affected by this unprecedented bushfire season.

T

hanks to the generosity of Voyager Malt and Hop Products Australia, who have donated all the ingredients for the beer, Badlands has brewed a one-off batch of "Recovery Beer” which they will be giving away for free!

The only catch for participated pubs and bars is that they must give at least 65 per cent of the proceeds from the beer to an approved bushfire relief charity — most venues have opted for 100 per cent!

Motus Transport are taking care of delivering the beer and KegStar have donating the rental of the kegs for free.

Orange-based designer Lucas Martin has also donated his time to produce the poster that is going to all participating venues; it features the native Banksia, one of the first plants to burst back into life after fire.

The beer itself is a tropical ale style (4.5%), described as soft, fruity and sessionable. To grab a glass and help a great cause, visit the Greenhouse of Orange or The Agrestic Grocer.

I was recently holidaying near Ulladulla. While I was there, bushfires burnt in every direction around us. Orange skies, ash and burnt leaves rained down. It was eerie and ominous.

Before New Year’s Eve, it struck my wife and I that for some people in the region, life seemed to go on as per normal. It reminded us of the message of the Bible with its message of safety from the fires of hell. A message which some people seem to ignore. For the bushfires, much needed advice and information was sent out by the RFS which required attention. For life, I encourage you to listen to the message of the Bible.

On New Year’s Eve, the fire went in the opposite direction to that predicted, and more than 100 ‘safe’ houses were lost less than 8 km from us (my thoughts and prayers go to those impacted). Power and phones died. The supermarket had a mad rush that cleared out key supplies. It was scary. The time when you face God at the end of your life may come suddenly as well.

Before then, listen to the Bible, so that you will not be scared on that day.

THUMBS DOWN to those Orange Councillors who obviously don’t do their homework. One only has to watch the live streaming of the Council meetings to see that many of the questions asked suggest several of our Councillors aren’t over the issues to be discussed. The result is a lot of time is being wasted with questions and discussion that shouldn’t occur during Council meetings, but beforehand. Council meetings would be a lot shorter if Councillors took more time to get the issues or questions that they want to raise cleared up before fronting a Council meeting.

Committing to investigate, despite what the final findings may be, is a no brainer and thank goodness good sense prevailed. Please let’s not have any rescission motions on the matter.

The aquifers are not an unlimited supply of water and are dependent on surface rain to maintain levels. Continual drought leads to not only depletion of surface dams and rivers but to depletion of aquifers from over usage by bore owners. Depletion of the aquifers stops natural seepage into surface dams and rivers and can lead to subsurface land crumbling – sink holes or worse. Bore owners please do some research to gain some understanding of how your selfishness can affect everyone.
