This comprises writing Individual programs for students who experience difficulty. I am driven to help these students access their education that they may reach their full potential and develop the skills to learn for a lifetime.

Beyond the classroom, I have been involved in many camps, musicals and mission trips, and I help run the Student Leadership Team

The ‘family feel’ of OCS enables teachers to come to know students and their families.

I have taught in Government and Independent Schools in Australia and the UK for over twenty years. I coach cricket, enjoy a good coffee with a good book and love watching my boys play soccer.”

My role as Middle School coordinator is to support the students in their learning and the staff as they guide these young people through a critical stage of their life and learning journey.

We look at Middle School as the ‘booster rocket’ between the ‘launch pad’ of Junior Primary and the ‘lander’ of Senior Secondary.

Our focus is on academic development and character growth as students become more independent. Service and outdoor education programs assist students see others and themselves as God sees them. Join us on this fantastic journey of growth and development!

How’s everyone going?

Today more than ever, a simple question like that between friends could make a real difference.

All of us are finding our own way in dealing with the rapidly changing world we now live in, and it can be reasonably assumed that many people are under enormous pressure for one reason or another.

I for one, am discovering what it feels like to employ a handful of loyal staff when at any time, some or all of them, myself included, could be without an income. So rapidly are things changing that it’s difficult for anyone to make an accurate assessment of what even tomorrow might look like.

If you’re wondering if Orange City Life will survive through all this, the only answer I can give at this time is I don’t know. There are too many factors at play to make a wise and accurate judgement. We rely on advertising revenue alone to survive and over the last couple of weeks that revenue has started to dry up as other businesses face similar downturns. At this time, it’s still unclear whether there will be enough businesses doing enough advertising with us to enable us to keep going. In other words, we don’t know at this stage where our advertising revenue will bottom out and when it does, will what’s left it be enough.

That said, be assured I’m doing everything humanly possible to keep Orange City Life going, in some form at least. My belief is, given the chance, we can play an important role in the recovery process if for no other reason, other than to lift people’s spirits through the hard times ahead.

We’re all in this together and we’ll be doing our best to play our part well and hard. On that note, I encourage all our readers to think long and hard about any money you are about to spend and determine to spend it with a local small business. Doing that is now more important than ever.

14,000 BLOOD DONORS NEEDED — JONATHAN ROE —

At a time when many of us are feeling helpless in the face of unprecedented events, there is something you can do to help save the lives of fellow Australians

L

ifeblood is calling on eligible Australians to become blood donors and for existing donors to make and honour their appointments to prevent a potential shortage of blood supplies.

Some 14,000 donors are needed to make an appointment over the next few weeks, including the Easter long weekend, to bolster supplies.

Lifeblood Chief Executive Shelly Park said the organisation had been preparing for the annual cold and flu season, and the emergence of the novel coronavirus could put the nation’s blood supply under even more pressure should existing donors become unavailable and regular donations become disrupted.

“At the start of 2020, we saw a phenomenal response from donors, who came forward and rolled up their sleeves as a way to help with the nation’s bushfire response,” said Ms Park.

“However, those generous donors now have to wait 12 weeks before they are able to donate again. This means there are

now fewer people able to donate over the coming weeks.”

Last minute cancellations are also putting a dent in blood stocks at a time when donors are in urgent need, she said.

“Blood is needed every day by Australian patients including road trauma patients, surgical patients, medical and orthopaedic patients, pregnant mums and cancer patients, said Ms Park.

Lifeblood wants to reassure donors and the community that there is no evidence coronavirus is transmittable by blood transfusion.

And Ms Park said the organisation has robust processes in place to ensure the safety of the blood supply and our donors.

“We don’t allow people who are unwell to donate blood.

Our donor centres are safe places to visit and we will take all necessary steps to ensure that stays the case,” she said.

“To ensure there is a sufficient blood supply, we are appealing to donors to keep their appointments if well and healthy and are inviting new donors or those who haven’t donated for a

while to come forward to help us.”

There are currently 500,000 Australians who donate blood, but millions more who may be eligible to donate.

“Right now, we have 14,000 appointments that need to be filled over the next few weeks as we work to continue providing life-saving blood and blood products to Australian patients as we head into the busy Easter period. It only takes an hour to give blood, but could be the life-changing gift to help someone celebrate next Easter at home with their lovedones,” said Ms Park.

“If you are a donor and haven’t made your next appointment, you can help us be prepared by booking one in the next few weeks as we approach the Easter period. And if you have never donated before, now is a great time to become a donor and help us maintain the nation’s blood supplies. This is your opportunity to give the gift of life to another.” Ms Park.

THE REAL BATTLE HAS JUST BEGUN!

BEC “I’ve been around horses all my life, whether it be with the trotters in the family or our riding ponies.

The Coonabarabran horse expo used to be my favourite outing with the horses, it had everything from jumping, eventing, polo, sporting and team barrel racing. The team

barrel racing was my favourite.

We never came close to winning but it was hilarious to watch because it was so chaotic.

After I finished University I moved to Canada and was living there in Banff for two years. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world

DAVIS and I got to create lifelong international friendships over there, I’d say that’s the biggest lesson I learnt abroad, you can never have too many friends, they’re the ones that become your family when yours is miles away... that and I also learnt Australia is the only country with decent meat pies.”

A lot of things are going to change as a result of the coronavirus, and some things will change forever. For many business owners like myself, the real battle has just begun and it’s inevitable that many businesses will go under as a result. We could very well be one of them. Business owners are facing what can only be described as an unprecedented challenge, one that no one could have prepared for. When businesses fail, the flow on results in, among other things, people losing their jobs and when a family’s income takes a hit, all manner of problems can emerge. For business owners and families, the scenario that causes the problems is the same.

point I’m making is that although a business may drop in turnover by say as little as 10%, that small amount may be enough to put extreme pressure on the business, enough to cause it to close.

That scenario can be explained very simply. It’s when the costs associated with running a business or the expenses that families are faced with to keep their heads above water are greater than the amount of money coming in.

Right now, it’s hard to be positive about anything given what’s happening and at the speed things are evolving.

For those not familiar with how business works, maybe a short explanation of what many business owners are facing will be helpful.

I’ll have more information for you next week but for now be prepared for some significant changes to occur in Orange City Life from April 1 as businesses, us included, respond to changing rules in society, as we take stock of reduced income (in our case – advertising), and how we go about still meeting community expectations, and so on.

During this coronavirus, many businesses are experiencing drops in their turnover far beyond just 10%, so it’s inevitable that unless there is a sudden change in the situation, many simply won’t be able to make enough adjustments to keep their doors open.

The flow on could be devastating when many people lose their jobs. I think it’s fair to say no one is safe at this stage, the reach of the impact is still to be fully seen.

Like so many we’re still coming to grips with what we’re facing, and decisions are currently being made on where we go from here.

It’s been a very tough week for all of us, no one would deny that.

Part of the pressure has been having to process the relentless avalanche of media reports telling of all things bad.

For this item however, I want to move right away from that and share some of the great things we’ve been hearing about while all this has been going on. By great things I mean the efforts some people have had to put in to serve us and also some of the wonderful acts of kindness that people have shared with us. If for no other reason, OC Life is doing this to say “You were noticed!”

Let’s start with our supermarkets...

We all know about the crazy panic buying that has occurred in our local supermarkets and yes crazy is the right word. For reasons that are still very unclear to most people who have, our supermarkets have been bombarded by people who seem to think that the world is coming to an

end, food is going to be in short supply or some other unbelievable notion.

Earlier this week I spoke to one of the supervisors at Ashcroft’s IGA in the Summer Centre to get a feel for the pressure they and others like them have been under. Here’s the feelings I got from that discussion.

No one in the supermarket business understands what prompted the toilet paper panic. There was no reason for it and still isn’t. That also goes for everything else. There never was a supply shortage of most items until the panic buying started and then set in. The consequence of the craziness was supermarkets being faced with a buying tsunami when they weren’t prepared for it. Last week, many supermarkets would have done more business than they would normally

do in the week before Christmas, but with one big difference. They know Christmas week is massive and so they are prepared for it. They simply weren’t prepared for last week’s shopping tsunami.

There never was any real supply problem and there still isn’t, warehouses are full and the problem they are now dealing with is getting the stock out to supermarkets. It’s now a logistical problem not a supply problem and it is generally felt that a more normal situation will return very soon. Some people are still caught up in panic buying and yes there are some items that are still flying off the shelves like sanitiser,

but at least that does make some sense. Supermarkets now have to make judgements about what might happen next. There are now many homes out there with heaps of supplies, so in the same way demand has been over the top lately, demand at the checkouts is expected to now drop while people use up their supplies. One day tsunami, next day drought, or so it seems that it might be.

OCLife I briefly spoke to Rochelle Ashcroft late last week and she said, her and husband Ian are so proud of their staff for the way they all handled themselves through the crisis. She said they were all put under enormous and unexpected pressure, and more so as the week went on, but by and large things went along pretty well and in an orderly manner. Rochelle said the way things turned out also speaks volumes about the quality and commitment of our staff and of our customers.

our local supermarkets. They were all put under incredible pressure and I know at Ashcroft’s alone, management staff joined their teams for long hours of stocking shelves late into the night to keep supplies up. It would have been similar in supermarkets everywhere, and not only supermarkets, chemists and most medical centres would also have been run off their feet as they say. Let’s not just be aware of what has gone on, let’s take the time to acknowledge these people if you haven’t already done so. Maybe a kind word of thanks and appreciation from you to the next person you come across on a checkout mightn’t go astray.

Knowing we had a baby in the house, my neighbour grabbed a packet of baby wipes while at the supermarket and dropped them off to us to make sure we wouldn't get caught out – Jonathan I run a baking business from home and last night a beautiful lady messaged me to ask if I was OK for flour which luckily I am as I get it straight from the mill. Was very touched by her message – Imperfectly Perfect Sugar Cookies We have a “pay what you want” system for download copies of our albums on our website.

Possibly aware that we are down tens of thousands of dollars in gig losses, a wonderfully generous person paid a thousand dollars for one download. The generosity left me in tears - Jason A local businesswoman here knows I have

ocd and cancer and offered me some paper towel from her hotel after I tried for three days to hunt some down.....(I had managed to track some down in the hour before this offer though) - Christine There is an amazing site that is set up to “adopt a healthcare worker” across Australia and so many people are helping them out with support, shopping, childcare or just a shoulder to cry on. It’s awesome! - Sar We were down to our last few rolls of toilet paper and our beautiful niece turned up with a packet of 8. – Susie My brother drives a cab and has been giving elderly customers his phone number just in case they need help in any way, just so they know they’re not on their own. – Amanda

And from business Spring Hill Post Office and Bella’s shared: When we decided to reduce our shop down to mail collection only, no coffee, no food from Bella's (basically, no income)....we knew it was going to be tough.

When we announced it to Spring Hill, some of the locals sent us messages to make sure we were okay and offered to go shopping in Orange for us. We aren't sick and can go to Orange, but it's lovely to know people think of us, even when there are so many things to worry about for themselves. One lovely local (Thanks Sue) even supplied us with toilet paper free of charge!

In times like these, little communities can make a lot of difference!

The Wellness House emailed: While the country is going into meltdown with unnecessary hoarding, The Wellness House is very proud to announce that members of the Orange Community have been exceptional in upholding strict hygiene and triage protocols, which is keeping the workplace quarantined and safe for everyone visiting, particularly in these times when it’s so important to keep our health at the top of the priority list.

The Wellness House which has GP’s also shares the building with dentists, chiropractic, naturopathy, physiotherapy, clinical psychologists, pathology, podiatry, dietetics and the Pickle & Fig café. Thanks to our co-operative patients, we are able to manage the Coronavirus remotely so we can continue on with business in a safe environment for everyone, which is pretty incredible under these circumstances. So, here’s a big shout out to our Orange community for demonstrating kindness in their thoughtful ways and concern for all.

for Farming Families

he Rotary Club of Orange North have partnered with the Rotary Club of Castle Hill to assist businesses in the Cumnock-Yeoval district. Their main objectives were to provide financial support for families suffering through the drought and lending assistance to keep local businesses viable.

The Rotary Club of Castle Hill contacted former member Peter Gilbank and asked him to formulate a project for their $5,000 donation.

Peter was aware of special grants provided through Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) and lodged an application which resulted in RAWCS granting an additional $5,000 to the project – a

total of $10,000 in all.

These funds were then converted to drought relief debit cards each with a value of $100. Members of Castle Hill and Orange North Rotary Clubs visited Cumnock recently for the presentation of these cards by Past District Governor Bruce Allen.

Rhonda Watt, from the Cumnock Progress Association, accepted the cards on behalf of her community and spoke of her gratitude and appreciation for the generous support from both Rotary clubs.

Lunch was served in the Cumnock General Store where members from both clubs as well as representatives from the local district enjoyed a time of catching up and fellowship. All relief debit cards have now been distributed to farming families across both communities.

This is going towards keeping people in jobs, helping businesses stay afloat, and assisting families, sole traders, casual workers and others experiencing financial hardship due to coronavirus to access their superannuation.

CASH PAYMENTS •

From 13 July there will be an additional one-off, tax-free payment of $750 that will go into the accounts of those receiving the Age Pension, Carers Allowance, Family Tax Benefit and those with a Commonwealth Seniors Card.

The instant asset write off for businesses will be increased from $30,000 to $150,000. This allows assets to be written-off for taxation purposes in the year they are purchased instead of over several years, providing an immediate tax benefit.

An additional 50% depreciation acceleration for businesses with a turnover of less than $500 million.

From April, loans of up to $250,000 will be available for up to 3 years for a business with a turnover of less than $50 million. No repayments will be required for 6 months.

LOCAL NEWS - MOLONG MUSEUM RECEIVES $20,000 GRANT The Molong Museum is a historic jewel in the crown of the Molong community with its roots dating back to 1856.

So I was delighted to announce the $20,000 grant that the Molong Historical Society received under the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme, for remedial work/ removal of the Gidley Street building annex and restoration of the verandah and entrance.

In addition to the geological displays, fossils, Indigenous artworks and age-old household items, some over 150 years old, a room has been dedicated to the Fairbridge Farm and the kids that lived there many years ago.

The museum is a wonderful showcase of Molong’s rich history, and well worth the visit!

Lockdown at the top of the world

Lockdown or holiday? For Lauren Aubé and family it’s just a matter of having the right perspective.

W

ith social distancing rules, self-isolation and lockdowns being enforced the world over to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus, there could certainly be worse situations to find yourself in than that of Lauren Aubé and family.

As part owners of Chalet des Deux Lacs (Chalet of the Two Lakes) located in the middle of the Val Thorens ski field in the French Alps; Lauren, husband Nils and their young son Sam’s living situation is unique even in normal times.

“We invested in the business three years ago, Nils is the director and we live here and we run the restaurant,” said Lauren, who is a long way from the floodplains and red sandhills of her childhood home in Western NSW. “We’re right on the slopes, so you are skiing, and you find this restaurant in the middle of the slope and that’s where we are — so there is no one else around.”

The village at centre of the Val Thorens ski resort is around a kilometre and a half away, accessible only by skis or snow mobile.

“We snowmobile Sam to day care, although the last few days we sledded, I took him on the sled down. He has probably been in a snowmobile more than he’s been in a car in his life!” said Lauren.

But, like the rest of the world, life has changed. It was two

weeks ago that the French government introduced the first measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

“It was Thursday night, the President made a speech that schools and day centres and universities would be closing on the Monday,” said Lauren.

“Then Saturday, we got contacted that it would change to no more than 100 people in an establishment — at the restaurant, on a busy day we do 300 people between midday and 3pm and that is eating, not the people just drinking — but we thought at least we can keep going… then Saturday night at 8pm they said as of midnight everything is closed.”

Saturday just happens to be the arrival day for new guests at Val Thorens, but within two days the busy ski fields were empty.

“People had come from all over the world. Val Thorens full capacity is 44,000 people so there probably would have been 20,000 people that had arrived and probably 10,000 season workers and then everything had to shut,” she said.

“We kept our workers around on Sunday but then we were told that anyone who wanted to leave the village had to be gone by Monday night, if not they would be stuck here.”

Shutting down the ski season seven weeks early will certainly be a financial hit to the business, but Lauren says they are trying to make the most of the unusual situation.

“For us, it’s fine — not considering the lack of money for a business — but with all this stuff happening it’s probably the best place to be,” she said.

“Nils and I were talking about it and we said to each other, that we can either come out of this fit, tanned and in shape or we could come out fat and alcoholic — it could go either way,” said Lauren, who believes it is important to stick to some sort of routine.

“The first three days it was like a holiday, but one morning I decided we have to differentiate weeks to weekends and get some routine and some sort of structure in life. I know from being a stay-at-home mum, it can be so easy to just sit around in your pyjamas and not do anything for that day and then another day comes and you do the same thing,

but I think it is so important that you wake up, you eat breakfast, you take a shower, you get changed and start your day.”

Nils and Lauren have both started running again, and Lauren is planning to take time to work on her French, which she needs to obtain residency.

But most importantly, Lauren said they are making the most of the precious time they have together as a family.

“I said to Nils, this could be a really once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have uninterrupted time with Sam, when we’re not working and we’re not busy, we just have to spend time together,” said Lauren “Nils works seven days a week for six months during the ski season and I work five days a week, so we’ve said, let’s just enjoy this time to be together as a family — this one is loving it!”

Movement outside of your home is being severely restricted in France, but the advantage of being locked down in a fully stocked restaurant is that there is really no need to go anywhere.

“We’ve got 800 kilos of fries if I get really stuck, we’ve got a pallet of toilet paper and five kegs of beer… we can go upstairs to an empty restaurant and make a fire, so there’s space and we closed down so fast that we’ve got plenty work to do.”

As school settles in for another year and children return to day care, illnesses begin to circulate. For parents and carers, it’s hard to see our children unwell, but fortunately many common childhood ailments are easily treated. Here are two bugs that are often passed around the playground.

▪ Keep your child’s fingernails trimmed, and avoid biting nails or sucking thumbs

and discomfort and give your child frequent sips of water

▪ Wash hands and under nails regularly and thoroughly, especially after going to the toilet

Medications such as pyrantel (Combantrin) or mebendazole (Banworm) are often recommended. Treat all family members at the same time, even if they are not showing symptoms. Unfortunately, repeat threadworm infection is very common.

Level 6 restrictions pushed back by 7 weeks Good inflows from both the Macquarie pipeline and the city’s stormwater harvesting have again pushed back the date when Level 6 water restrictions could begin in Orange.

Last month Orange City Council extended the worst-case scenario date when Level 6 could begin, back to May 15. At a meeting last week, which considered recent inflows, it was decided that date could be pushed back another seven weeks to July 6. Orange Mayor Reg Kidd has welcomed the latest news. “As a community, Orange is currently going through some tough times, and this news can really lift local spirits,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “We’ll continue to review our position, and work to do all we can to push back the day when we might have to go to Level 6.” The Council’s CEO, David Waddell, said the new date could be set because of the amount of water that’s come from the Macquarie Pipeline and stormwater harvesting systems. “The decision by NSW Water Minister Melinda Pavey to approve plans to change our trigger point, happened just before some solid falls of rain,” Mr Waddell said.

Orange City Council responds to COVID-19 crisis Orange City Council will continue to adapt to the developing COVID-19 situation with a focus on service delivery, CEO David Waddell said. “We are changing how we work so we can keep operating and delivering services.

This is an ever changing challenge but our attention is on community and staff health and safety while continuing to meet community needs,” Mr Waddell said. “We have 500 staff and they are part of 500 families so we are very much part of and working for the community. The senior leadership of Orange City Council is continuing to monitor the unfolding impacts of the global COVID-19 crisis, as it has since the issue first emerged.”

Plans are in place so that essential services can continue to be provided for the community. Across the

organisation, we are complying with the recommendations of health and government authorities, and monitoring changes as they are made. We are in touch with local health authorities as day to day decisions are made.

Mr Waddell said Council was ensuring it complied with the government’s requirements to limit the number of people at indoor locations. “As well as essential services, a number of council agencies provide facilities that will continue to be important in supporting community members through this crisis,” Mr Waddell said. Council welcomes funding for local projects Orange City Council has welcomed the announcement of successful government grants towards upgrades at the Jack Brabham Park sportsfields and the Carriage Cottage in Bowen.

Nationals Upper House MP, Sam Farraway announced funding towards infrastructure and youth based initiatives for the Orange and District Football Association and the Bowen Community and Technology Centre.

Both organisations are receiving the funding from successful applications

to the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund. Orange and District Football Association has secured $129,356 towards lighting upgrades to the football grounds at Sir Jack Brabham Park.

The Bowen Community and Technology Centre has secured $98,529 towards their efforts to assist young people with homework, reading and school associated projects, as well as job search and online training for all ages.

It is a suitable facility to recognise the work of the late Carl Sharpe OAM who dedicated much of his life to coaching and cricket administration and Greater Western region.

Local charities ENCOURAGED TO APPLY FOR GRANT FUNDING

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation has announced the opening of their next funding round and is encouraging all not-for-profit and charity organisations seeking money for local projects to apply.

“This year we are looking to fund projects that take an innovative, but local approach addressing important community issues,” said Charitable Foundation Executive Officer, Graham Batten.

“We know that local charities understand their community best and the Charitable Foundation wants to help those organisations make their ideas for positive change a reality.

“Our goal is to support projects that help to rewrite the future for people who are disadvantaged, marginalised or isolated and also

support social opportunity in our regional communities.”

Twice a year the Charitable Foundation provides approximately $800,000 in funding for projects across regional New South Wales.

They encourage local charities to put forward their grass-roots projects that address key social issues across the Charitable Foundation’s three funding focus areas of health, youth and social outcomes.

“Since 2003 we’ve provided over $20 million in funding to 472 community projects

and initiatives, all in regional NSW. Each successful project is selected for its ability to make a meaningful difference to the lives of people and build healthy, safe and resilient local communities,” Graham said.

“We’re looking forward to continuing our work with regional charities as together we help to improve social and well-being outcomes for community members in need.”

Funding submissions open 24 March and close 5 May 2020. All applications are made via the Charitable Foundation’s online portal accessed via the website.

PaulTIERNEY ONE IS NOT THE LONELIEST NUMBER Are you working from home this week? Embrace it while it lasts, I reckon we might miss it a little bit when it’s gone.

I’m trying hard to keep this column upbeat – here goes …

It’s mid-afternoon as I type. I’m at home on my own. My lovely wife is still working at the time of typing, and my Gap-year youngest are still plugging away – excellent and impressive safety measures in place for him and others.

There’s a few cars driving past out the front, but I’d have said not as many as would be normal for this time of day, and they’re certainly drowned out by the noises of nature.

I’ve setup a big workdesk here at home on the back deck. It’s all covered over, so barring a weather catastrophe, I’m sweet. There’s an extra monitor hooked up to my laptop so I can multitask, my phone is connected to the stereo out here on the deck so I can listen to the news, JJJ and to Spotify. I bought extra coffee pods (that doesn’t make me a ‘magpie’ does it?) and I’m less than a metre away from the fridge out here, which now has chocolate biscuits as well as a healthy supply of you know what for when quittin’ time arrives.

The pile of books and notes needed for lessons is quite large, so staying organised and neat will be a priority.

The big whiteboard that normally hangs in the garage (it used to say things like ’20 sit-ups’, ’15 arm curls’) has been moved and is now affixed to the railing of the verandah. When I’m not writing on that board, my eyes have access to the view that was almost the exclusive reason we moved out to Millthorpe. Stunning. Anyway, my first online lesson went pretty well. Can’t say I put on a coat and tie for it, and I was drinking a coffee for much of the time I was ‘teaching’. Nice. I’d recorded

a short video for the Year 12 class about “Exponential and Logarithmic functions” with a few demo’s of how to do the questions on the whiteboard, and posted it to the online platform we’re using to communicate, just before our schedule get-together time. They all tuned in right on time, viewed the vid, got stuck in to the associated work, took a picture of the work they completed and sent it back to me via the ether.

Some were all good (I was impressed the video worked), others asked for a bit of a hand in an email, and some even did more work than they had to!

Maybe they were relishing the fact that the old fogie wasn’t out the front trying too hard with dad jokes or references to Star Wars in between the mathematical concepts. Online learning … sit down, get to work, no interruptions. I even had kids post a ‘thank you’ message during our computer chats.

Whilst giving the students feedback during and after their lesson, the birds are singing in the background, cows are moo-ing, sheep are baa-ing, chooks are clucking and my two little magpie friends are hanging around digging worms from the lawn and waiting for me to throw them a crust of bread. It’s a perfect Autumn day in the Central West. I guess I’ll have to move this show indoors if the weather turns, but that’s a problem for another day. During my lunchbreak I’ll get the (boring old) Spag Bol ready for when the weary stillworking workers arrive home later. Then I’ll put together a few more little videos for the students to view, mark some of their work as they send it through online, have another coffee, listen to a playlist (which, ironically, contained the song “It’s the end of the world as we know it”

by R.E.M – bahaha), stay positive and get on with it.

How to make your money go further These are extraordinary times and for the time being, life is being turned upside down. There are going to be a range of lived experiences as we all try to get through this, so I want to acknowledge that it will not be easy for some. However, there are a few things everyone can be doing at the moment to make sure their money goes a bit further and give themselves the best chance of coming out the other side of this in the best financial shape.

For many in Australia things have been coasting along reasonably comfortably for a long time now, but the present situation presents the perfect opportunity to get back to basics when it comes to money. Here are a few tips to help you manage your money a little better to give you a little more breathing room…

1. Track your spending I’d suggest there’s never been a more important time to know where your money is going. Start engaging with the app your bank has on offer or use something like Pocketbook if you either don’t like what your bank has on offer or you have banking with multiple institutions. Knowledge is power.

2. Stick to a budget Once you know where your money is going you can start to effectively budget by knowing how much you need to fund the different expenses in your life. Work out what your fixed expenses are and which expenses you have some flexibility with and if you have a partner, work together on this to make sure you are on the same page for best results.

3. Avoid using credit wherever possible There’s a big difference between using a credit card for convenience and paying it off each month vs accumulating debt and paying interest. Credit cards come with high interest rates and it can be a quick downward spiral if you get caught up in trying to pay off debt at those kinds of rates.

4. Shop around for EVERYTHING There’s no time like the present to start being a frugal shopper. Frugal doesn’t have to mean cheap, it just means making sure you get value for money for every dollar you spend.

My advice is to start with your fixed bills… there’s no footy to watch and not much happening socially.

What better time to invest a little time in reviewing things like your electricity, gas, phone, internet,

insurances, etc… and make sure you are only paying for what you need. Often companies will lead you into a bargain trap… paying what sounds like a good deal but paying for things you don’t actually need or won’t use.

Use comparison websites to quickly see how your current contracts stack up against what else is out there and in most cases all you then need to do is ask your current provider to match what else is on offer. They don’t want to lose customers in the best of times, let alone now!

When it comes to shopping at the supermarket, if you have the cashflow, buy bigger as you almost always pay less overall. For example, my kids love tuna and the bigger cans of tuna are so much better value than the little cans. Buy cheaper alternatives where you can and most importantly, go shopping with a shopping list!

5. Ask a professional for help I want to point out one area where I feel I can add real value… for those depending on their retirement savings for income, I’ve helped numerous people reduce their fees to save THOUSANDS of dollars each year… and the impact of fees on investment values will perhaps never be brought into sharper focus than right now. If you’re unsure or concerned about the fees you pay on your retirement savings and investments, then give me a call and let’s discuss the options. There is absolutely no shame in asking for help and it could make a world of difference! And if you’re like me, you probably value independence when it comes to professional help.

In times like these, it’s best to be as proactive as possible. The reality is that if you get on top of these things now, you’ll actually have MORE money to spend on the important things in life.

Young Gun of Wine (YGOW), the industry’s authority on the best young wine labels and winemakers in the country, has announced the 2020 Top 50 winemakers – with three on the list hailing from the Orange and Central Ranges Wine Region.

Young Gun of Wine Founder Rory Kent said the 2020 list represents a truly diverse collection of the best and latest in Australia right now.

The YGOW Awards panel tasted around 250 wines over two days at Howard Smith Wharves to come together with the final Top 50 list.

“The judging is pretty rigorous and they go through tasting it and look at the brand where it is and what it stands for and the region and select it from there — so that’s really exciting to be acknowledged as part

I met with Blayney Shire’s General Manager, Rebecca Ryan, in her office in Blayney and we immediately started talking about leadership in times of uncertainty. ‘It is important to give people unbiased and correct information.

We show leadership by staying calm in times of uncertainty’. Rebecca is a big believer in speaking with people, not just sending information out. ‘We talk with our staff a lot, and with the community as much as possible’.

ebecca has been General Manager for five years now.

‘It was a roller coaster for a while with all of the Fit for the Future issues and amalgamation proposal of Blayney with Orange and Cabonne. We remained focussed on the ‘business as usual’ and since then we have been delivering significant capital projects with a variety of government and Council funding.’

‘We have a very stable Council with seven Councillors and low staff turnover. We are a flexible and family friendly Council with young staff. People need to put their family first. If people are worried or anxious about their own health issues or families, how can we expect them to be operating at 100% at work?’

Rebecca was the 2018 winner of the Ministers’ Awards for Women in Local Government. The Awards were established 11 years ago to recognise the outstanding contributions and achievements of women in local government in NSW. We had a conversation about strategic planning in local government and, no doubt, if anyone else had been listening, we would have sounded like a couple of enthusiastic nerds. We talked about difficulties with measuring outcomes. We concluded that it’s a journey that Councillors, staff and community need to go on together with ongoing improvements.

Blayney’s Community Strategic Plan is built on the various Village Plans that are developed by village communities themselves. ‘This has proved very helpful as each village’s priorities are clear for when funding becomes available. Business cases are developed, and we have shovel ready projects, and we have been able to tick off a number of achievements.

We will get back into the next Integrated Planning and Reporting framework cycle after the September elections.’

‘We have received significant funding from both Federal and State Governments; including Building Better Regions and Stronger Country Communities Funding, so have employed a Project Manager to ensure we can complete projects within the timeframes. The result has been refurbished and new community facilities, like the CentrePoint swimming pool refurbishment project in progress. We are all

looking forward to it being re-opened in late April.

Community groups helped us deliver the majority of our Drought Communities Projects last year and have done a really excellent job. Council provides grant funding for community groups and helps them to build capacity.’

‘We work in partnership with the many volunteer Village Committees, Sporting Clubs, and Blayney Rotary Club to deliver events, projects and programs. We have been working with the Blayney Town Association and Sydney Trains to develop plans for Blayney Train Station refurbishment for an arts and community space.’

‘Our Councillors represent the whole community and share the workload of attending as many of the village events and meetings as they can. We will be holding information sessions prior to each Council meeting, in April and May for people interested in standing for election in September this year.

Councillors are great barometers of the feelings of the community and if there is a problem or they feel that the level of trust is falling, they bring that information to our attention for action. Councillors, in addition to the Councillor specific training and induction program, are included in the training opportunities we deliver to staff, such as like Cyber Risk and Disability Awareness.’

‘We are really working hard to grow our villages using existing infrastructure and reviewing the Blayney, Orange, Cabonne Rural Lands Strategy, which will be on Public Exhibition from early April, and has been the first step in this process.

The next item will be to adopt the draft Local Strategic Planning Statement, and currently we are reviewing the Blayney Shire Settlement Strategy.

These documents are very important to ensure we facilitate housing development without creating conflict between rural residential, mining and our important agricultural industry.

‘There are no local government boundaries as far as tourists are concerned, and Orange 360 has done a great job with bringing tourists to the Orange Region which includes Blayney as the Village Shire.

Orange, Blayney and Cabonne have an excellent combination of urban and rural attractions creating synergy. The Accommodation Working Group has

also been a big success in delivering shared benefits from the Cadia Mine workforce needing short term accommodation or, even better, moving into the region. The other objective of this collaboration is to ensure our signature tourist events and important tourism accommodation market is not adversely impacted, and Orange 360 with Newcrest Mining support, were able to successfully juggle the different accommodation needs at various times like the Day on the Green.’

‘Mining has played an important part in Blayney Shire’s history and Newcrest Mining, whilst a significant ratepayer, is also a major employer of our people. We hope miners will make Blayney Shire their families’ permanent home in future. The proximity and position of Blayney Shire means that people who live here, have diverse job opportunities to choose from locally and in Bathurst and Orange.’

‘Some of our staff have come from Cadia and bring with them a great work ethic and an excellent health and safety culture. We decided a few years ago that we needed to grow our own staff and introduced four Skillset Trainee positions into our outdoor crews. We cannot guarantee Trainees a permanent role, however, due to some recent retirements, we actually have employed a few of the Trainees onto the permanent workforce. We have amazing staff, with a can do attitude, who are proud of their work and community.

We also have a very stable workforce with new Managers coming through and are pleased to be an employer of choice locally.’

‘2020 is fast becoming a memorable and challenging year for everyone and it is very wearing to be hearing such constant and worrying news. We had already developed a 12 month Wellbeing Program, which includes topics such as Sleep and Fatigue, Positive Communication, Skin Cancer Checks and Mental Health Awareness – so I am pleased we had commenced this program. Building resilience and looking after each other is so important under the current circumstances, and my mantra at the moment is ‘Social Distancing does not mean Not being Social’.

GOOD NEWS AS CITY’S WATER WOES EASE

Good inflows from the Macquarie pipeline and the city’s stormwater harvesting have again pushed back the date when Level 6 water restrictions could begin in Orange.

Last month, Orange City Council extended the worst-case scenario date when Level 6 could begin, back to May 15.

But at a meeting last week to consider recent inflows it was decided to push that date back another seven weeks to July 6.

The Council’s CEO, David Waddell, said the new date could be set because of the amount of water that’s come from the Macquarie Pipeline and stormwater harvesting systems.

Steady flows in the Macquarie River have allowed Council to pump 213 megalitres of water from the pipeline.

And during this same period, 140 megalitres has been harvested from the city’s stormwater system.

“During a time when there’s been no natural

continuing to work on a number of major infrastructure projects to further help drought proof the city.

“While these two water sources are good news, we’re not resting on our laurels,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “We’re getting on with the job of developing our water infrastructure, by working on projects which help us get through the next drought.”

“In recent weeks we’ve made progress to secure the pipe we’ll need to construct a new pipeline from Spring Creek dam to the water treatment works.

“We’ve also begun the process that will see an environmental review of the proposed new wetlands to extend our storm water harvesting system.”

“The great news from this last set of figures is that when we also take stormwater and the pipeline into consideration, we’ve now got a realistic scenario that we might not even reach the Level 6 mark,” he said.

Chris Gryllis Real Estate has long been a local landmark on Summer Street, but last Monday morning the agency opened the doors for the first time at their new home at 74 McNamara Street.

...In 1962, I was just lucky enough to land in the best city of the best country...

“So, until last Monday, I have been in Summer Street, in that precinct for 58 years. I think that’s a record,” said Chris.

Arriving in Australia from Patmos in 1962, Chris went to work with his brothers at a local Summer Street café. Then, in the early 70s he ventured into real estate working for Bob Moneghittie real estate agency at the corner of Summer and Peisley Streets.

“After about three years, I started my own real estate agency, Chris Gryllis Real Estate, and with the assistance of my wife I’ve run it since then, so I’ve been in real estate now for over 45 years.”

Life in Orange has been more eventful than Chris expected when he arrived here in 1962.

On the walls of his office, Chris proudly displays mementos of the many civic endeavours he

has undertaken, including carrying the Olympic Torch on its relay route to the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

“I’ve been blessed with good family support, my wife’s support and lots of friends and also a lot of community support because — I’ve always been community minded — but I was given the privilege by the Orange people to serve as a councillor and I served in the chamber of Commerce through the Orange City Council through various committees,” said Chris.

“I have enjoyed a fulfilled life and I have been able to be, not only part of the community, but part of the decision maker of the Orange Community — and that makes me feel good.”

Chris is a big believer in Orange. And, despite the unprecedented position we find ourselves in,

he is confident there is a brighter future ahead for our city.

“Orange, which I love, is and always will be the best regional city in Australia as far as I’m concerned,” said Chris.

“We’ve got everything here: the infrastructure is here, the close proximity to the city, we have parks, restaurants, we have music, we have theatre, we have almost everything any big city has with the exception of the beach.

“The weather conditions are magnificent… The wealth is here in the agriculture, the wines, the stone fruit, and other rural enterprises. And we have become the envy of all regional cities as far as the medical facilities.

EPIDEMICS

In a world where our fears of drought , fire , flood and now a pandemic, are fuelled by an enthusiastic media, the Oral History Group thought it appropriate to look back at a past which, while no less fraught with danger, had far fewer resources to deal with such events.

In keeping with the times this month, instead of meeting together, we communicated by phone and email, avoiding close contact as advised.

Over the years there have been quite a few diseases which have made life unpleasant for the world’s citizens.

One of the most frightening of these was what was known to most people as the Spanish Flu and to others, more colourfully, as the Black Plague because of the bluish appearance of many of its sufferers.

It was thought to have originated in the USA and was brought to Europe by American soldiers in the last years of the First World War where it began to strike down people already weakened by years of war and deprivation. It remains one of the great natural disasters of recorded history, thought by some experts to rival the Black Death of 14th Century Europe.

In Australia it affected the lives of millions of people and probably more than fifteen thousand died in a period of six months.

Sydney saw its first case in January, 1919 and it reached Orange in March. There was little that could be done for the sick beyond careful nursing. The Orange Leader reported at the time that “doctors and nurses were worked to death”.

The Leader also had a warning for people who were selfmedicating: “Alcohol has neither a preventative nor curative effect. Avoid it!”

The makers of patent medicines also had a field day. “Pruno for influenza never fails,” claimed one, while Alfred and George Nicholas’ Aspro had apparently produced a miracle cure.

The Leader. Mrs C.H. Hodge from The Hermitage, Orange, suggested that “carrying a stick of cinnamon and chewing at it from time to time would be helpful”, while some claimed that “a mixture of lime and milk would help “even if the patient is on the brink of death”.

Despite all this 225 people in Orange became ill and 14 died.

Plagues and epidemics have always been with us: smallpox, typhoid, bubonic plague and leprosy were all before our time but we knew tuberculosis, poliomyelitis, tetanus, meningitis, gastroenteritis, whooping cough, influenza, measles, mumps, scarlet fever and chicken pox. Most of these today can be prevented or cured.

But in 1881 it was a different matter. With a smallpox epidemic raging in Sydney and panic gripping the population, 500 acres of land were allocated for an emergency quarantine hospital to be built in scrubby country near La Perouse. It eventually became the Prince Henry Hospital for Infectious Diseases and it was here that Dorothea began her nursing training. By this time smallpox was a thing of the past but there were many other infectious diseases to be confronted.

Poliomyelitis was one of these and, for patients whose breathing had been compromised, iron lungs were a necessity.

“The polio epidemics were dreadful,” Dot told us. “So many young people died or were in iron lungs for very long periods.

The patients who were in iron lungs had just their head and neck protruding. We had to pull them out quickly to wash them and put them back in and pump, often by hand, to get the pressure up again.

“There was also diphtheria,” went on Dot,”and often tracheotomies had to be performed to help people breathe.”

Dot and the staff at the hospital were also in charge of people with leprosy, a horrifying disease which was still affecting people from the islands to the north.

When the Oral History Group were children they were lucky enough to have many diseases almost eliminated by the introduction of mass immunisation.

The big spectre of our childhoods was polio. There were major epidemics in Australia in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

“Death and crippling were very common,” said Keith. Three of Di’s childhood friends were struck down with only one surviving.

“I knew three people who caught polio who were crippled,” added Barbara.

The reality of polio was stark. To survive often meant living for the rest of their lives with crippled limbs and constant pain.

The Orange Ex-Services’ Club has vowed to restore their operations as soon as the Federal Government mandated closure has been lifted.

Like other pubs and clubs around the country, the Ex-Services’ Club were forced to close their doors on Monday following Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s announcement of tough restrictions on gatherings to limit the spread of COVID-19.

In a statement, the Club thanked patrons for all their support and understanding in this difficult time and said they look forward to welcoming back all their staff once they are able to reopen and restore services to the Orange Community.

Orange Mens Probus, supported by Ladies took a most interesting day trip to Cowra.

After a pleasant morning tea, they proceeded to Brumby Aircraft Manufacturing business at Cowra airport. Brumby is the only aircraft maker in Australia. They source components from China and America, but then sell planes back to China.

Engineer, Paul Griffin showed a wide range of planes in various stages of construction.

be sporty, and have been shown at Chinese air shows. There are high wing and low wing versions and can get up to 10 Gs (10 times gravity) when performing. He also showed very high tech workshop machinery, and answered numerous questions from the visitors.

After lunch, Cowra Breakout Historian, Graham Apthorpe, gave and informative talk at the Breakout Centre, revealing many little known facts. The site for the prisoners was well

The Centre also housed Chinese and Korean prisoners, who were slaves of the Japanese, and Indonesians who were caught up in the war. There were also Ukrainian refugees, and German Jews who had fled the Nazis and who were treated as “friendly aliens” and were placed on a farm nearby.

Japanese soldiers were determined to give their life for the Emperor, but their parents wanted them to return, and were very grateful when any relics of these men were returned to them.

Last stop was a visit to the Hologram at the Visitor’s Centre which depicts a young woman describing her reaction to the Breakout, and displayed many artefacts of the era.

POWERFUL FRIENDS In the bible we are told that we can learn things about God by looking at the world and universe that he has made.

Recently I read about the discovery of what some astronomers are describing as the biggest explosion in the universe. The explosion is said to have taken place 390 million light years away. More impressive still is that the explosion is estimated to be 1.6 million light years across – equivalent to 15 Milky Way Galaxies!

Those numbers are so impossibly large that I have a really hard time wrapping my head around them. The more I think about them the smaller I feel. How powerful and wise must the creator of our universe be? Surely, he wouldn’t have any care for little humans such as us, right?

The bible tells us that Jesus loved us so much that he gave up his place of power and was born as a lowly human. As powerful as he is, he lived his life on Earth serving others, even washing their dusty feet. He died in our place offering us all forgiveness for our wrongs and restored our relationship with Him (which is still possible because he didn’t stay dead).

As a single Mum it is a big enough struggle to manage, put on top of that food allergies and financial struggles, and you can only get what you need when you need it. But now, there is nothing. Be thoughtful to the rest of us who have to struggle and be sensible please!!

THUMBS DOWN to the driver in the grey SUV exiting the Millthorpe Post Office/Chemist driveway at an unacceptable pace. This is a shared space with pedestrians and you nearly hit the boy on the scooter. I noticed you stopped long enough to tell him not to tell his mother. Slow down.

HUGE THUMBS UP to local supermarket workers who have had to suffer the craziness during the panic shopping frenzy over the last week or so.

You would have earned your wages, more than twice over I’m sure. Your efforts have been appreciated by most, so be encouraged and keep up the good work!

PAINTING A FLAGPOLE THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY This week’s photo shows how high and tricky objects were painted in the 1950s. Painter John Remmrodt was assigned the task of painting the flagpole on the Hotel Canobolas in May 1956.

He hung his pot of paint near the top of the ladder, gripped the handle of the brush in his mouth and shinned up to the top of the pole, hanging on with his legs and one arm, until the paintbrush ran dry, then worked his way down for more paint. No doubt he felt he had earned himself a beer at the hotel when he had completed his job.
