Pies keep Corina on her toes The Orange community is once again spoilt for choice as Corina Kenny’s famed pies are back on the market and as tasty as ever.

orina has been at the helm of the Hill Street Grab ‘n’ Go space since December 2019 and says although she may not have had many expectations going into it, after 20 years in the beauty industry, she is loving her change of pace.

“I knew that my pies were really popular (back when I had the Mountain Teahouse), and people would always keep asking me to make them, they would say, ‘you need to start up your pies again’” Corina laughed. “I’ve always been interested in having my own café and I needed a change so when this became available, I didn’t even think about it I just said… ‘yes, I’m going to do it.’”

“I walked in, set up my oven and started

cooking. Its back to homemade for me. I don’t do anything fancy, I’m not here to compete with anybody. It’s about good, friendly, approachable service, because that’s who I am.

It seems the word of Corina’s cooking spread quite quickly “The pies are keeping me on my toes that’s for sure, though our sausage rolls are also one of our most popular items, they are quite big and are great value.” The store also offers fresh sandwiches, salads and delicious coffee.

“I love our position in town we get a great range of people; everyone from tradies, to school parents and a lot of families from the neighbourhood. People are the best aspect of this business, they come in have a chat, have a laugh, grab their goodies and off they go.

USERS PAY! It’s only a bit over a week until the first edition of our new newspaper Newswatch comes out and I hope a lot reading this are looking forward to seeing what it’s like.

Newswatch is going to be a bit different to traditional newspapers in a number of ways and I’d like to tell you about some of those differences here.

“

I believe in the user pays model and always have, but who is the user? In the case of newspapers, I believe the user is the person who uses the newspaper for advertising purposes not the reader.

I don’t believe readers should have to pay for a newspaper, either for the hard copy form or the online version.

I believe the responsibility for funding a newspaper rests firmly with anyone who wants to use the newspaper to further their business or service. For me, charging readers for a newspaper would be like charging people to go into a shopping centre to shop. Just like the shops in a shopping centre pay rents etc. to be there, and with the expectation that the shopping centre will attract loads of shoppers, businesses wanting newspaper readers to respond to information or advertising in a newspaper should pay for the privilege to be there. If that doesn’t make plain good sense I don’t know what would.

Why did the Elk cross the road? To get to the lush green forest of course, and get there it did. This elk, along with his family, crossed the only road into the Banff Gondola facility where it was quite happy to hold up the mile long traffic and bus loads, to find their ‘chew of choice’.

Be that as it may, readers throughout time have paid to buy newspapers at the same time businesses have paid to place advertising in them. Publishers who charge people to buy their newspaper and then charge advertisers to advertise in it are getting it both ways in my view.

Given the way traditional newspapers like the Central Western Daily appear to be slowly self-destructing, I think those days are over and a new model

is required. That’s where Newswatch may play a role.

Newswatch will be free for readers to pick up, just like Orange City Life is now.

If enough readers pick it up and read it, word will get out and it will then follow that advertisers will want to advertise in it. I believe advertisers will still want to advertise in a newspaper provided it has a decent audience reading it and that the cost to advertise in it represents good value for money. That will be our aim.

That said, many businesses have enjoyed a good measure of free advertising in newspapers over the years, and to be honest it’s a very sneaky way of advertising and in my view, it lacks integrity. Of course, it’s in no way illegal or even dishonest, but in my view it’s also not a noble way to go about business. I should also point out that not all advertising or promotion that is presented in the form of a story or news fits into the category I’m eluding too, but I can assure a lot does. ORANGE FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICE (OFSS) WISH TO LET THE ORANGE COMMUNITY TO KNOW THEY ARE STILL OPERATING DESPITE COVID-19 AND LIKE MANY, ARE DOING THINGS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENTLY. OFSS assists families with dependent children whose capacity to function is limited by internal or external stresses of life.

Having opened in 1985, OFSS has assisted over 4,500 families. Staffed by one manager, three family caseworkers and one child development caseworker, they offer a flexible and professional service, tailor made to the specific needs of the clients. The free service aims at providing preventive services, with a focus on strengthening and supporting families and building on family members’ existing skills.

At this stage, OFSS are limited to online, phone and zoom/facetime consultations where virtual home visits are taking place.

Orange Family Support Service Manager, Elly Haynes explained, “We are developing technology to enable us to run our parenting programs and innovative ways to connect

with our clients.”

In regards to keeping in touch with our clients, we are getting closer to the stage where we are looking at meeting up with the families by doing a home visit, though we will not be going into their homes, we might sit apart on the veranda for example. Not just for our safety, but for the client’s safety. To have that personal face to face is very important.

That will also morph into our ability to, as the restrictions lift, we will be able to accompany them to other appointments they may need to get too.”

OFSS runs a variety of family related programs. These include; Keeping Children Safe, 123 Magic, Rainbows and Play and Learn. Facilitators are creating activity packs which are being distributed fortnightly, to keep children at home engaged and continually learning.

Elly continued, “It’s been a big change for us, I’m really lucky because the staff are wonderful, we always support one another.

The priority for me was the staff’s health, in doing so we are continually finding new ways to work with the community and stay connected.” As we are an essential service, we really see it now as an opportunity to learn new ways of doing things, because some of those ways we will definitely be using in the future.”

The team would also like to remind the community they are still open to receiving referrals.

“We are only a very little service, but we’ve had a big footprint in Orange over the years and we will continue to step up.”

A

s many Orange City Life readers will know, I originally hail from the ‘back o’ Bourke.’ Quite literally too, as I grew up on a red sandhill overlooking the grey floodplains west of the Darling River.

It was a great place to be as a kid. But, when I got older and left for the city, I found out that many things I considered normal about my childhood, were far from it. Not having mains electricity and relying on a generator are apparently not part of everyone’s childhood experience. Neither are chopping wood for the ‘donkey’ in order to have a hot shower, being almost out of primary school before commercial television arrived, nor someone my age knowing what a party line phone is (our first family phone number was ‘Paka Tank 1U’).

But when you live it, and don’t know any different, it is not something you think about, which brings us to how Bourke people address each other.

Australians love a good nickname, but in Bourke, I believe the art has been taken to a whole new level. Assigning nicknames is a pastime the whole town enjoys, and one locals have been playing for generations. Indeed, some nicknames are even passed from father to son like heirlooms; occasionally the names are modified to avoid confusion, so Dooka’s son becomes Young Dook, or other times the name is completely different, but derived through a weird comedic logic, so Maggoty Mick’s boy is now Blowfly — that sort of thing.

Outsiders coming to Bourke are surprised by how pervasive the use of nicknames are, while locals will unblinkingly introduce someone to them as ‘Bonka’, ‘Bull’ or ‘Bent Axle’.

It was a recent comment thread on a Bourke Facebook group got me realising just how many people I know by their nicknames for whom I would have difficulty recalling the name their mothers gave them. And I know I’m not the only one! There is a story (possibly apocryphal) of a town trivia night many years ago, where teams were stumped when asked to give the real names of members from a well-known local trucking family, but only known to all by their nicknames ‘Plugger’, ‘Popeye’, ‘Onion’, ‘Burloo’ and ‘Tart’.

And Bourkeites will, more often than not, introduce themselves by their nickname regardless of whether you meet them at the pub, in a park, or in a professional setting. The former town dentist, the late Ian Liddell, was known by everyone as ‘Tooth Fairy’ or more commonly just ‘Fairy’ and I don’t think I ever once heard him called by his Christian name (I had to think a bit to remember it for this piece!).

Now, having a name that can be shortened to ‘Jono’ has meant I have never really had a nickname stick other than the obvious ‘Roey’, ‘JR’ or ‘Young Paul’ — which was ever only used by a guy known as ‘Kat’ who knew my father but could never remember my name.

For a small outback community, it would still take a surprising amount of space to catalogue the nicknames that have accrued in Bourke over the years, but here’s just a tiny taste of rich nomenclatural practices of my home town: Bus, Bundy, Brisol, Brushy, Bonka, Bumchin, Bungy, Blue, Red, Purple, Possum, Puppy, Doggie, Chook, Ferret, Rooster, Weasel, Grub, Duck, Long Tack, Short Fork, Flute, Frig, Fats, Fang, Froggo, Five Bob, Ten Bob, Kacko, Pecker, Pineapple, Punchy, Storky, Sweeney, Slapper, Schooner, Splinter, Nooka, Diddilo, Disco, Dribbles, Sambo, Rambo, Nought, Chub, Sticky Tape, Tiddles, Meataxe and Mental — and that’s barely scratching the surface!

I’d say there’s probably a linguistic thesis or two there waiting to be written.

$2 MILLION IN ADDITIONAL FEDERAL DROUGHT COMMUNITIES FUNDING While COVID-19 is dominating the news headlines, drought continues to impact our local communities across the electorate.

I was very pleased to be in Cudal this week to announce that residents of Cabonne will benefit from a further $1 million in funding under the latest round of the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Programme.

KEEPING THE ELDERLY IN TOUCH

Home and Community Care Clients at Uniting Central West are connecting virtually with their social support groups, thanks to a donation of ten electronic tablets from Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations.

team of home care workers in Orange, will use the special donation to help elderly clients find a sense of comfort and normalcy during this time as social distancing measures are in place.

Cadia Acting General Manager, Aaron Brannigan, said the company had heard that the social isolation impacts of COVID-19 was preventing older clients living independently in the community from meeting together in person.

“Discussions with Uniting Home Care highlighted a need for electronic devices

to assist residents who have had visitor restrictions, stay in touch and remain connected. It was perfect timing as we had recently updated some of our technology and no longer required a number of tablets,” said Mr. Brannigan.

The tablets will be used by Uniting Home Care staff to help elderly clients stay engaged with their usual social and exercise activity. The tablets will also be used to host virtual house parties, trivia nights and virtual senior’s gym sessions.

Area Manager, ACT/West Home and Community Care, Polly Lindon explained, “We value the health and safety of our clients living

independently at home and our priority during this time when face-to-face contact is not possible, is to help them stay connected and remain positive.

We are always looking at ways for our clients to stay involved with their friends, families and the communities they live in. This initiative by Cadia, will provide the opportunities to continue engagement and communication, which is especially important for the wellbeing of our elderly community clients,” said Ms Lindon.

Cadia’s donation comes from its COVID-19 Community Support Fund which aims to assist the local community with the challenges associated with the pandemic.

COUNCIL AT WORK New one-stop-shop to streamline system for finding council contracts How to pay your rates during the current COVID-19 crisis During the COVID-19 crisis, rates cannot be paid in person at the Civic Centre. This change is aimed at keeping residents and staff safe. With the latest rates notice are now arriving across Orange, there are a number of easy ways to pay your rates, and the simplest and least-known is to pick up the phone.

RATES CAN BE PAID: - by phone to the Council Customer Service team (6393 8000) using your credit/debit card - by using your bank’s internet banking transfer options or BPAY (account details on your rates notice) - online via the OCC website - in person at the post office - mail a cheque (PO Box 35, ORANGE) or drop cheque in box at Civic Centre front counter.

Currently there are more than 250 businesses on lists which Orange City Council uses to seek quotes to complete work. During the last financial year, Orange City Council spent $18 million with companies and contractors from the local area in the last financial year.

The services ranged from consultancies to equipment hire and painting. Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said the new online approach comes at just the right time for businesses doing it tough during the COVID-19 crisis.

“During this time, many local businesses are shortstaffed,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “It can take a lot of time to prepare a competitive quote to bid for a council job, and then on top of that, the business’ staff has to compile all the necessary paperwork. This easy online approach, makes the task a lot simpler. This new system comes on top of a recent change by the Council to give a price discount when awarding contracts to locally-based business. The Council has got to get the best deal with rate-payers money but it makes sense for the money to stay here in Orange.”

Orange City Council’s Employment and Economic Development Committee chair Cr Tony Mileto said the new system strikes the right balance. “The Council is spending ratepayers’ money so it’s fair enough that we have to be sure all the appropriate qualifications, work health & safety regulations and insurances are in place,” Cr Tony Mileto. “Any business which does contract work with Orange City Council has to comply with council policies which apply to that setting. “ “It’s all important, but I’m sure some operators would agree the time it takes to compile all the paper-work to prove the required measures are in place can sometimes be onerous.”

“The beauty of this one-stop-shop approach is that once a business has entered all those compliance details into the online system, they’re there for good.

The Council now wants suitably qualified contractors, consultants, hire companies and IT specialists to register on the Orange City Council website. “Registering on Felix lets a business operator lodge their business and compliance information for all current and future projects at the one time. They can also indicate the categories of work they are willing to do. “The Felix system will let Council issue its ‘Requests for Quotation’ through the platform directly to businesses who are interested in that sort of work.

The contractor or consultant can then decide if they want to submit or decline an RFQ. “There’s the added convenience, that the Felix system will send each business an email reminder if their insurance is about to fall due.” The Council has five categories or work, called ‘panels’, each with many sub-categories. The five main categories are: - Civil works - Trade & services - Consultants - Hire - IT The Felix system is free to use. A business can choose to register in more than one category. If a company can’t find a suitable category that matches their business, they can check with the council by sending an email to quotations@orange.nsw.gov.au The Felix system is not used when the council seeks tenders for the purchase of equipment such as cars or heavy machinery. Contractors have until the 15 May 2020 to get registered with Felix. After that deadline, the Council will start issuing ‘Requests for Quotation’ through this platform.

Council’s Woodbank returns for the winter Orange City Councillor Glenn Taylor is pleased the program is back to help local families in need. “Woodbank was wellreceived last year and I’m pleased that’s back again as temperatures start to drop,” Cr Glenn Taylor said. “Council is funding the scheme with $10,000 and it was good to see that community members have also donated $700 to help out. Local wood suppliers will again be involved.

They’ll be delivering $100 worth of wood to local families in need.” The program will operate from the Foodcare Orange organisation operating out of its building at 142 March St, as well as Orange City Council’s Community Services Centre at 286 Lords Place. “Woodbank will operate in much the same way as last

year. Foodcare has an established way of offering support to families in need.

Families are already going to Foodcare, and there they’ll get the groceries they’ll need to help them through what’s a tough time. They’ll also be able to get a delivery of firewood. “When a family asks for firewood at the Foodbank office or the Community Services Centre, there’s a simple form where people can supply their details and provide concession, pension or Centrelink reference numbers.

Staff will take their details and arrange for a load of wood to be delivered. It can usually be delivered in as little as three days.” Foodcare Orange president Bev Williams said the first orders of wood have already been placed.

The Orange City Council meeting (21 April) approved Development Applications for: • A new 37-lot residential subdivision between Escort Way and Silverdown Way. • A new 36 metre by 13.5 metre storage shed at the Works depot. The shed, will be used by Orange City Council to store equipment and vehicles. It will be built alongside Margaret Street, behind the SES headquarters.

• A new packing shed on an orchard building in Pinnacle Road. The DA is one that would normally be approved under delegation by the CEO, but because the owner of the proposed building is a council member, Cr Mario Previtera, it was considered by a Council meeting.

TALKING CLASSIC MOVIES with Mal MacDonald:

Sci-fi hits AND sci-fi pits — JONATHAN ROE —

Grab your ray guns and watch out for radioactive monsters and pod people; this week Orange City Life sat down with Mal MacDonald from Reel Memories to talk cult science fiction movies from the 50s and 60s.

It is a genre of particular interest for Mal who has made a career of hunting down hard-to-find titles and has even played a part in getting cult hits back into circulation.

Thanks for talking to us again Mal, what have you got for us this week?

When we go down this road, we get what I like to call the sci-fi hits and the sci-fi pits. A lot of these films are still today rated quite highly on Rotten Tomatoes, but there were some other real turkeys that were made! Giant Claw is one that stands out as a real baddie, but then younger kids today are sort of appreciating these older films, because they get a kick out of them, they are so bad it’s good, so they get a bit of a cult following.”

OK, so what is your pick of the ‘pits’ as you call them?

This is a bit of a cult film: Ed Wood’s masterpiece, Plan 9 from Outer Space — Graverobber from Outer Space, it was originally called. It’s a black and White 1959 film which of course had Bela Lugosi [known for playing Dracula on stage and screen] — it only had a few minutes of footage of him that Ed Wood shot in 1956 and by the time this film came around Bela had passed away. It is listed as one of the 50 worst movies ever made!

There was another movie made called Plan 9 which was a bit of a homage and it wasn’t that much better!

Now we go onto some of the better films… Keep in mind that a lot of these films were made not long after the nuclear bombs went off at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, so the 50s spawned a whole range of nuclear-related films; apocalyptic type films or films where a nuclear bomb had been tested somewhere in the desert and it spawn all these various huge monsters.

Tarantula is one of those. It’s a black and white film came out in 1955 from Universal and Universal did a lot of this sort of stuff. It starred an actor called John Agar who was at one stage married to Shirley Temple.

This Island Earth was one of the better science fiction films from the 50s. Another Universal film from 1955 in colour, it is one of those great classics as it fills a lot of the science fiction clichés. It has got monsters in it, a creature with a big head from the planet, a flying saucer, ray beams, so it really fits in that classic sci-fi look.

It was remade in 1978 with one of the original actors, Kevin McCarthy who was still running around yelling about pod people. But the two main stars in this version were Donald Sutherland and Leonard Nimoy, who we all know later as Spock.

As a bit of side trivia, one of the co-screenwriters on that film was Sam Peckinpah, who went onto directing fame for the Wild Bunch, Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia and Major Dundee. And one of the actresses, Carolyn Jones, she went on to become Morticia in the Adam’s Family.

A great one from 1958, is I Married a Monster from Outer Space. That had the actors Gloria Talbott and Tom Tyron — he was an old star, well young when this was made, but he’s been in a lot of westerns and different things.

Now next a few films I had something to do with getting released. I’m working with a company that, occasionally, will ask me for suggestions and I give them a batch of titles and they clear the rights and sell them — It saves me from opening my own label!

This is one of my favourites, a colour gem from 1959, 4D Man. This was an interesting one starring, Robert Lansing, who is working on a dimension device to get through solid subject matter and he can walk through walls put his hands through glass windows and rob people but to survive he has to lay his hands on people and the people would be then white haired and dead on the floor! Robert Lansing was of course in a number of different westerns and things, but he was better known, in later years, for the TV Series 12 O’clock High. This also starred a very young Patty Duke.

Cyborg 2087, was another I got released. This was originally made for TV but released theatrically and if this doesn’t have tones of The Terminator in it, I don’t know what will! It is about a cyborg who comes back from 2087 to the year 1965 to change the future, but is pursued by two other cyborgs sent to stop him. This movie stars Michael Rennie and the sci-fi buffs will know him from 1951’s The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Gorgo, I also got this one released this is a British Film released through MGM UK with Bill Travers and William Sylvester.

It is about a 250-foot mother monster who wreaks havoc on London to come back to rescue her baby, who has been captured by two chaps to put on display. Various places like Big Ben get destroyed. It was a kitschy little production, one of the better UK ones that were around.

Another one I got released is the 1964 colour production, Robinson Crusoe on Mars. That had the actor Paul Mantee, Vic London, and one other who we all know went on to fame and fortune, Adam West, who was Batman for the original TV Series and Batman the movie. It’s a bit of a classic, so I was glad to get that one released as a lot of people had been chasing it for years.

Now The Blob was one of Steve McQueen’s earlier lead role, and then there is the follow up movie that came out decades later in 1972 Son of Blob — it is also known as Beware the Blob.

You won’t believe this, but the director is Larry Hagman, who became famous as an actor, he also has a small part as a hobo that gets eaten by the blob.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT FUND DONATIONS Cadia’s COVID-19 Community Support Fund has contributed $251,402 to the local community to date.

Other recent donations include: • $38,972 towards laptops for the Orange District Early Education Program (ODEEP) to assist families in accessing ODEEP’s telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

• $25,000 towards the Smith Family’s Learning for Life program. Funds are being used towards the provision of internet, educational programs and devices to assist children in remote learning during this time.

• A donation of 10 Samsung tablets to enable Uniting Central West elderly clients to connect virtually with their support groups.

NEWCREST FUNDS VACCINE Newcrest has announced a A$1 million funding contribution to support cutting edge COVID-19 vaccine research in partnership with the University of Queensland (UQ).

The contribution has been made by Newcrest as part of its recently launched A$20 million Community Support Fund and will be specifically deployed to support UQ’s ground-breaking ‘molecular clamp’ technique to develop a vaccine for COVID-19.

If successful, the technique being applied by UQ will not only bring the promise of overcoming COVID-19, but also demonstrate the efficacy of a new approach to vaccine development globally.

Newcrest’s donation towards COVID-19 vaccine research provides financial support towards developing a measure to protect the health and safety of our community, and also contribute towards saving lives and reducing the impact of COVID-19 globally.

As restrictions begin to ease, the Salvation Army Store in Orange are looking at the possibility of opening soon.

While they wait for the go-ahead, the team are putting a call out for volunteers, as many of their previous volunteers will remain in isolation due to their health.

The store is looking for people who are under the age of 70 years old, who are

fit and healthy and can spare a day or a couple of days a week.

Store Manager, Col Barnes said “We are looking for people with an interest in books, jewellery, and or bric-a-brac, as well as those with experience in customer service. It’s a fun atmosphere here, there’s always encouragement and laughter amongst our volunteers.”

will have all of the Covid-19 precautions in place including one-way aisles and floor markings.

In saying that, the store remains closed for donations, keep an eye out for the donation sign as they hope to put it out soon, until then please do not leave your donations on the street at the shop.

In 2020 we are experiencing the unprecedented health care situation of COVID-19.

As the Director of Nursing and Midwifery I understand the essential role nurses and midwives play in the delivery of appropriate quality health care every day at Orange Hospital and would like to take this opportunity to express my enormous gratitude to the nurses and midwives that have demonstrated unwavering commitment and professionalism during the uncertain times we have recently experienced.

International Midwives day falls on the 5th May and International Nurses Day on the 12th May and allows us an opportunity to celebrate and recognise each Nurse and Midwife at Orange Hospital The nurses are the heart of health care at Orange hospital and I am delighted to say that I am the Director of a highly professional & exceptional nursing & Midwifery team that are supported by Medical staff, Allied health, Pharmacy, Administration staff and support staff. In my 36 years of nursing I have never experienced a more committed, professional, skilled and brave nursing workforce than exists at Orange Hospital.

I have been nursing for many years with a passion to become a midwife. I’m delighted that recently I was successful and offered a mid-start opportunity through Orange Hospital combined with Tertiary study at Charles Sturt University.

After nursing for many years in paediatrics, adults and most recently Special Care Nursery, becoming a midwife would complement and add completion to my nursing career.

I really enjoy working with the women and their families and it is so special to share the pregnancy journey with families including the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal stages as they adapt to life with a newborn. Having the opportunity and privilege to accoucheur a baby and share the joy of welcoming a new life into the world is just amazing.

I really enjoy working with the midwifery team and many of the education and clinical knowledge and skills acquired are very different from my previous nursing experiences.

Team Midwifery care and the Continuity of Care model have been proven to enhance the pregnancy journey for womencentred care and promote birthing as a natural phenomenon.

Continuing to promote women-centred care and providing evidence-based choices for women to have the optimum birthing experience and best outcomes for mother, babe and the family is very desirable for the future of midwifery care.

During my final year of studies, I was part of a student midwife lead continuity of care program. This solidified my understanding of the importance of continuity of care for improving perinatal outcomes and also enhanced my career satisfactions – I knew midwifery was going to be my one and only profession.

I graduated in 2012 and began my New Graduate year in 2013 at Hornsby Kur-ring-gai Hospital.

I moved to Orange in November 2013 and began work at the Orange Aboriginal Medical Service as a midwife.

Through the support of the Aboriginal health workers and the child and family health team, I quickly became accustom to community of Orange and the women who were accessing the midwifery and women’s health services. I commenced full time employment at the Orange Hospital where I began working in a structured and fast moving maternity service The team of the women’s and infant department is incredibly diverse, woman focused with a drive for innovation and change. My passion for midwifery working alongside women and their families was ever growing. I continued to find myself navigating towards working with vulnerable women and families. The partnerships with community members and organisations I had developed whilst working in the community at OAMS, aided in my ability to ensure these women and families had a smooth transition into and out of the health system and integrated back into the community.

I continue to work towards continuity of midwifery care to all women and families, care which is holistic, individualised and woman centred, irrespective of cultural background, socio economic status and lived experiences.

Midwife

I commenced working in Orange Hospital for my New Graduate year in February 2015. Since then I have continued to learn, upskill and work in all areas of the Maternity Service.

I love being a Midwife as I see the job as an absolute privilege.

The word Midwife means ‘to be with woman’ and that’s the best part of the job, supporting, caring and working alongside women to benefit them, their pregnancies and their families.

We get to share in some of the most important moments of women’s lives. Seeing new life into the world each day is amazing and supporting women and their families through education and practical tips and tricks to help them in their early days of parenting is a delight.

I see a bright future for Midwives if we hold onto one simple and important statement ‘being with woman’. We need to remain the ally and advocate for the woman in an ever changing world. If we remain doing the work that has benefitted women over the years in educating, growing, learning and caring for women in a way that places them and their family first then we are in for a good future. Research shows the importance of this individualised care model.

The new education and learning pathways which update and expand Midwives knowledge and skills is also encouraging.

We as Midwives need to ensure that we continue to take up these opportunities to benefit the women that we care for.

Midwifery Unit Manager (MUM)

I started my Midwifery career almost 20 years ago, after nursing for several years in critical care areas. I wanted to work in an area that brought joy to families and allowed me to care for women and families at such a pivotal time of their lives.

Spending such an intense time with women and their families creates a bond that stays in your memory for a long time. It is a surreal experience to see a teenager with their driver’s licence, and think “I was at your birth!”

Not long after I graduated as a midwife, an opportunity came along to work as a flight nurse/midwife for the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Broken Hill. I was keen to put all my gathered skills and experience together and take on this challenge.

As manager of the women’s and infants unit, every day is different, and brings new challenges. We meet new families constantly, and seeing these families adapt to new dynamics and being part of their journey is immensely satisfying.

I have the privilege of leading an incredible team of midwives-I am so proud of the work they all do on a day by day basis to provide care to the women and families of Orange and surrounds. I would like to take this opportunity for International Midwives Day 2020 to thank all the midwives in the Women’s and Infants department for their care and dedication to the women and families of our district.

Midwife

I chose to pursue midwifery at a very early stage of my nursing career as I was always drawn to the wellness paradigm that it encompasses, as well as my passion for women’s health and interest in pregnancy, labour and postnatal physiology and care.

I am soon to start working within the Orange Hospital OMGP (Orange Midwifery Group Practice) – which involves a model of care that I am really passionate about. I love the continuity of care that this model of care pertains, working with women throughout all aspects of their perinatal journey.

I am incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to work within such a great team of midwives and look forward to continuing to learn and grow in my career as a midwife.

Being a midwife is the best job in the world, not only because every day offers the opportunity to help women and their families, but also because of what an honour it is to educate, care for and advocate for women in the way that I’d like to be looked after. I love the diversity within the job, caring for an array of women and their families, and offering individualised care to each woman. Midwives offer care and education from conception all the way through to postnatal care. I love working with women in order to achieve the best possible outcomes for them and their babies.

I am extremely lucky and grateful to have chosen such an amazing profession and I’m looking forward to the future of midwifery.

Sophia is an emerging leader in Coronary Care and is an asset to this unit.

ORANGE HOSPITAL ENROLLED NURSE OF THE YEAR I am pleased to announce Anita Boschman as the enrolled Nurse of the year Anita has been recognised for her excellent initiative as a nurse on the surgical ward and is very eager to learn. Anita contributes to the education of patients in relation to their care and often goes above and beyond her duties. Anita in her role as a ward nurse shows empathy, kindness and compassion to all her patients and is an asset to the surgical ward.

Clare has been recognised as a nurse who demonstrates excellent quality care with great patient outcomes. 105 Years at the Heart of the Community “There is great growth and a bright future for Dudley” said Dudley Private Hospital Chief Executive Officer Paul McKenna “but the key to all of that is the people who work here.”

On Tuesday, Dudley took the time to celebrate International Nursing Day, thanking their 100-strong nursing staff for the dedicated work and the important role they play in our health system.

“Nursing is a work of heart,” said Mr McKenna, who believes all his staff play a vital role in delivering care to patients.

“All of our staff come here each day because they are dedicated and passionate about delivering care for people. It doesn’t matter what role; we all recognise that we are here for the patients and I want to thank them for all their hard work, their dedication to the professions that they have, and their dedication to the patients.

“I think they are a great team; they are incredible people, they all get on well and love coming to work — and that makes it a pleasure to lead! To be part of a team that are committed in what they are doing and believe in what they are doing, it is a privilege to be amongst people like that.”

Founded in 1915, the Dudley hospital is an Orange institution and, with multi-million dollar expansion plans in the works, one that will be here for many years to come.

“We are growing and we’re expanding,” said Mr McKenna. “We are putting a new mental health wing, a specialised area that is very bright, modern, fresh, with lots of facilities. Mental Health is a growing area, and one of importance at the moment, with COVID there is a lot of anxiety and uncertainty in people.”

THANK YOU…. Two simple words said or not said, will inevitably have a powerful impact on a team. Said as a courtesy, like when someone hands you a cup of coffee, is simply good manners. Said at the end of the day, ‘thanks for a great day’ or ‘thanks for your hard work’ as you leave for the day, falls into the trap of a habitual kind gesture. So, for people to feel appreciated and valued, a thanks needs to relate to a why. Let me share with you why the Dudley team means a great deal to me.

eliminate the need for shared rooms at the Dudley Hospital.

“All, apart from two rooms, will all be single rooms in the whole hospital which is something that is nice for our patients. We are building 19 new rooms, with a net gain of seven extra beds, so we go from 57 to 64 beds,” Mr McKenna said.

And Dudley Private Hospital also have plans to add more mental health beds in the near future.

The current expansion will also include a $4 million cardiac cath lab, building the capacity of Orange’s cardiac care services.

“At the moment, services in Orange are at capacity, or on the verge of capacity, so we will be able to relieve that burden and people have better access through both the public and private sector,” said Mr McKenna.

“And having a cardiac cath lab here means we will build in an intensive care unit in the hospital and an upside of that is we are going to have 24 hour onsite medical coverage. So that is another plus for Dudley and for the community because it strengthens our capability and what type of services we can provide.”

The hospital also boasts a state-of-the-art $1 million robotic surgical assistant (ROSA) for total knee replacements — the first of its kind in regional NSW. “So there is a lot of money being spent. Ramsay Health Care hold Dudley Private in a special place and they are really committed to investment in regional towns. We’ve been here for a long time — 105 years! — and it is something special, and something to be proud of: to be part of the heart of this town. I think that is an important connection.”

“I think the job chose me more than I chose it.

I’m from a family of healthcare workers, I’ve two siblings that are doctors and I was going to do medicine but then my mum just said to me, ‘No, you’re a nurse.’ I didn’t know what that meant, but I went into nursing and absolutely she was right!

I was an RN by 21 and I just love it. I love being able to really care for people and get to know them. Doctors see a patient for ten minutes a day, I get to spend the whole day with them and get to know them and their families and I think that is what really drew me to nursing.

“And I think what’s lovely at Dudley is that the doctors here really work as a team with the nurses, they really care what we think, what are our ideas, and that teamwork is what works the best for our patients.

“I didn’t think I would stay in Australia, but I came 11 years ago and never left. I met my husband here, had children, so I always say my life started in Australia and it started here at Dudley.”

“When I left school, I had the urge to help people, but at that point I felt I couldn’t go into the nursing field, but I was looking for something in the health field where I felt I could contribute. I’ve been here at Dudley for 15 years. I came to Dudley three years ago and I work with really nice people and have some really good clients. It keeps my brain active and it keeps me physically active too, because we preach the benefits of exercise so you’ve got to practice what you preach.”

It was six years ago I put an ad up on Facebook and one of the staff here said they were looking for workers, I came in and put my name down and I’m still here.

Now my daughter and my auntie work here too, so it’s a bit of a family affair. The people here are nice, caring and loving and I like working with the elderly people. It’s satisfying.”

“I’ve always worked within the health industry, so initially I worked in radiology and then I came across to the hospital here 11 years ago. I have a varied role, I work on the front reception, I also do clinical coding and I work in the billing department, so I get to work in quite a few different areas of the hospital. And I enjoy it. “My parents, Tom and Jessie Golding, lived through World War 1 and knew of the horror and violence which overtook Europe at that time. Countries had to salvage and rebuild, restore and provide food for humans and animals. And all had to shoulder the load.

Many people today must feel that they have had enough of isolation and all the restrictions imposed in an effort to combat Covid-19. However, as the anonymous writer of the advice given above says: Do not give up.

The Orange Oral History group seem to have lived much of their lives with this thought firmly in their minds. We are a group of about thirty people, both men and women, who have gathered together to share our experiences and thoughts on a variety of social issues.

In the early days, one member spoke of her mother who had nursed victims of the influenza pandemic of 1919, others of their experiences fighting in World War 2, the changing attitudes to women over the years and even the way language has transformed over our lifetimes.

We began in a very small way about ten years ago when I was seeking information for a series of historical articles on various Orange institutions. I gathered a few people together to reminisce about the railway, the post office and the

And those lives have encompassed a great many events.

“Tom and Jessie were of pioneering stock and had drawn a block of land to farm. This land was part of a large acreage divided by the government for the farming of food, producing crops and animals.

“Paddocks needed to be fenced, dams sunk, a well dug and windlass mounted. Draught horses had to be broken in so that they could haul ploughs, combines and wagons. Trees were ring-barked and cleared away and some sort of shelter built before a crop could be harvested.

Women and children worked alongside the men.

“Then in 1929 the Great Depression struck, throwing thousands out of work. Banks were closed, only allowing enough money for people to barely survive. Tom and Jessie

and their six children were allowed seven pounds and six shillings a month to live on.

“On the farm they grew all types of vegetables and fruit, fertilised from the horse yards and cow bails and dispersed by a horse drawn dray or older children with fork and shovel. Because there was no refrigeration, the excess was preserved in Fowler preserving bottles and egg glass for future use.

“Jessie and the girls washed clothes with a copper, mangle and scrub board in an outdoor washroom. They were almost completely self-sufficient”.

Reg’s mother dispensed medicine from her own cupboard at the first sign of illness and they certainly were not sugar-coated pills. Epsom salts, cod-liver oil, paraffin oil and castor oil were high on the list of favourites.

Reg remembers the horrifying epidemics which used to strike regularly: “Polio was something to be dreaded. It used to hit children mostly and many were left with deformed limbs which affected them for the rest of their lives.”

Because of these early hardships, Reg learned many lessons in patience and survival which have helped him through a long and fruitful life.

Although this pandemic presents us with a situation like none our generation has ever faced before, Jeff Morrow has also faced many difficult times in his long life as a farmer:

“Thinking about hard times within my lifetime, the first I remember was the drought in 1944 and ‘46 when I was ten years old. The adults were talking about the chooks dying and falling off their roosts in the searing heat. Because the only well on our property was dry, we had to take the horses, cattle and sheep two miles to Boree Creek for a drink until my father was able to dig another dam.

“There were two other droughts in 1957 and ‘72 and although short, they were very severe. But the one I remember best was when I was living at Panuara. The rain dried up late in 1978 and although we had a couple of false starts, the drought didn’t end until May, 1983 and then, wow! did it rain!

“This is when we really started to worry. Most of the farmers in the central west remember 1982 as the worst year of the drought and the cost of carry on finance went up to 22%. The Federal Government came to the party and pegged the cost of housing finance at 14% but business borrowers were not so fortunate.

“Many farm machines were taken for auction by the financiers to sales near Molong because farmers couldn’t afford to pay the interest, particularly in the middle of a drought.”

Jeff is another member of the Oral History group who has been hardened by the challenges that life has thrown his way.

Today’s problems are of an entirely different nature but he is facing them with the same courage which he has shown all his life.

“I only do it about one-and-a-half hours a day, that’s enough… I’m 90 in three weeks’ time and I haven’t got all the energy you young blokes have!” said Canowindra’s Les Pfeiffer.

While many a ‘young bloke’ has been spending their isolation time on the couch catching up on Netflix, Les decided to do something a little more productive and community minded. Armed with a 25-litre bucket and a small hoe, he set himself the task of removing the prolifically invasive khaki weed from Canowindra’s Morris Park.

“I guess I just declared war on khaki weeds.

I didn’t know whether I was supposed to but I talked to one of the Council men and he seemed quite happy,” said Les, who when done with the park, carried on his campaign at the nearby Tom Clyburn Oval.

“There’s always a lot more there than you think when you are walking past. I got ten

bucketfuls from Morris Park of khaki weed and then I got 26 from around the oval. I’ve spent about twelve days, I imagine. I haven’t been in any panic to do it; some days I don’t go out and some days I do.”

It’s not the first time Les has undertaken a bit of public weeding. He first took on the khaki weed in Morris Park when he moved into town five years ago.

“See the khaki weed, when they mow it, it just spreads everywhere! So, I just thought I‘d get onto it and clean it up, but I‘ve neglected it a few years” he said.

“But while we are here in isolation, we are not doing much else, so I thought I might as well get started!

“It’s no big deal, but it has given me exercise and given me something to do and I think it is a worthwhile thing to happen! If I’m still about next year, I’ll give it a check up again.”

ETHANOL INVESTMENT IN FIGHT AGAINST CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC AUSTRALIA’S leading ethanol producer, familyowned Australian Manildra Group has announced it will make a substantial investment to expand their state-of-theart distillery, to produce an additional 90 million litres of ethanol for pharmaceutical and beverage industries.

Hand sanitiser with at least 60 per cent alcohol as the active ingredient is recommended by the World Health Organisation as part of the global fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

“This investment will provide more than one hundred jobs during construction as well as provide additional ongoing employment opportunities

at Manildra Group’s ethanol plant. This further investment will provide a much-needed boost to the community of Nowra and the NSW economy,” said Group Managing Director John Honan.

“We’re proud to be able to assist the nation during this crisis – working with government, front line agencies, hand sanitiser and cleaning product manufacturers to meet the demand for locally- produced ethanol.

“Manildra Group has been producing ethanol since 1992 and we’ve never experienced such an unprecedented level of demand.” he said.

Ms Cooper spent the first couple of weeks in her new role getting to know the many volunteers who are essential to the running of the house on a day to day basis.

“I have met some wonderful people and am so impressed by the way the volunteers are so passionate about giving their time to Ronald McDonald House in Orange.

Ronald McDonald House in Orange is continuing its important role supporting families of sick children at Orange Hospital. Among the many ‘wrap around’ services for families with a sick child, is the provision of pre-prepared frozen meals.

Executive Officer of Ronald McDonald House Orange, Rebecca Walsh said that while group working bees in the house to prepare frozen meals have been put on hold due to the restrictions related to the Covid 19 virus, as an alternative, commercial kitchens are now preparing food for families which are collected and distributed to families.

“We are so appreciative that generous donors have come forward to pay for the purchase of food, and Rachael Bastick from Coco’s Café and catering in in Orange has been preparing a delicious selection of meals,” Ms Walsh said.

She said the initiative is aimed at eliminating the need for families to prepare any food in a shared space.

GRACE ‘Kettles and pans, say the bells of Saint Ann’s.

Three beans and one pea, say the bells of Saint Steve’s. Oh me, oh my …’ Grace laughed as the song rambled away from her. ‘I’m just making it up now.’

She was standing at the kitchen sink, filling the kettle, trying not to miss the electric one they’d had in Sydney. There was no electricity here in Sunshine, of course, not even a lightbulb; no street lighting in Bourke, either. In a way, it wasn’t so different from the villages that lay outside Chippenham – Slaughterford, Thickwood, The Shoe, you’d not have a lightbulb between that lot – but the distances here in Australia … Ah, the distances … Whether in Wiltshire’s quaint limestone cottages, or the fashionable apartments of London squares, people sat close, and closer still towards Christmas, against the drear, against the cold. They didn’t necessarily converse – God forbid – but they were there: visible.

Here, framed within the kitchen window, a line of dark rainclouds rose above the rust-dusted land like a blue brushstroke, a mountain range made tiny by forever. The thought that there might be fewer than a dozen souls between herself and that faraway rain – that there might be none but Jack Bell and Joseph McGlynn – was both exciting and shocking.

‘Electrifying,’ she whispered through her smile, and almost called out to Art, before telling herself, again: No. Leave him. He remained in such a sound sleep, and there was no more sound medicine. Such a temptation, though, isn’t it? she mused: To wake the soundly sleeping one, just to tell them how beautifully sound they are.

Her smile curled then around the shape of Jack Bell, walking towards the house as though he might have been pulling those clouds along with him. Now, there was a beautiful man in all

his shapes and sinews – and a haunted one. She wondered what horrors had caused him to choose a lonely riverbank for his home; she’d find out, too, eventually, she hoped. In the meantime, she stoked the stove and placed the kettle on it, trying not to miss the convenience of piped gas, too.

Even the making of a cup of tea was slow out here – and perhaps just as it should be. Just as they all needed it to be.

Leaving the kettle to boil, she stepped out onto the verandah, and waved to Jack as he neared: ‘Would you like a cup of tea?’

The man gave a low wave in return, holding up the basket with his other hand – her basket, which she’d quite forgotten about now. He placed it on the ground by the back step and said: ‘No thanks, Mrs – ah, Grace. I’ll be off.’

And off he went, straight-backed and in some way slouching, downcast, at the same time.

Hm. Grace wondered what his change in mood might have meant, if that McGlynn fellow had been rude or mean – such an odd, gruff man, he was – but she thought better of asking anything about it right at that moment. She watched Jack Bell walk on instead, dragging that long cloud behind him – or perhaps dragging it up the sky, she thought as she looked back at forever, at the blue cloud mountain rising over that wide western plain.

A storm? she wondered at it, and indeed that’s what it was; she stood there for a little while, watching it gather. But as she squinted she saw something else out there against the sun-bright blackening clouds – something gold and moving slowly. Moving closer. It looked like three golden leaves, glimmering, and somehow being drawn across the furthest reaches of their rear paddock.

What was it?

‘Where’s my cup of tea, woman!’ The deep voice of a man crashed along the verandah, and though she knew it was Art, she jumped and spun and barked a laugh: ‘Oh you!’

He grinned, sleepily, his dark hair all over the place on his head; he yawned and stretched out his long, strong arms.

She said: ‘Aren’t you wonderful.’

‘I am.’ He gave himself a scratch behind the ear.

‘Darling.’ She pointed out at the golden leaves: ‘What’s that, can you see? What’s that moving out there?’

From behind her, he roped his arms around her waist and rested his chin on the top of her head: ‘Where?’

‘There – see?’

‘Ha!’ he said when he saw it, squinting too. ‘Land ho! I do believe they are ships of the desert, my love. Camels.’

‘Camels!’ She was delighted. She’d heard several times already that the district was being overrun with the creatures, set loose by Afghan hawkers driven out of business by trains and motortrucks, and now those camels had gone feral, making pests of themselves breaking fences and trampling crops, but seeing them here, in this dramatically fantastical storm-light, well, it was like a circus coming into town – albeit a very small one. How strange, how incongruous, and yet how fitting they seemed. ‘How magical.’ She sighed, leaning back against Art’s chest, imagining the caravans said to have traversed these vast expanses, carrying everything from finest silks to scrubbing brushes across seas of red sand the size of Britain and more. ‘The three wise camels,’ she mused, squeezing the edges of her husband’s broad, tanned hands, pressing them to her belly full of Christmas wishes: Please.

‘Did I hear you talking to someone just now?’ Art asked her, and she turned in his arms.

‘Yes,’ she told him. ‘A neighbour, but not McGlynn.

A man called Jack Bell – native fellow, I presume, though I don’t exactly know. He lives on the riverbank.’ She glanced back over at the storm, concerned now that he would be out in this weather. ‘We really should invite him to stay, but I’m not sure he’d accept the invitation.’

Art laughed; how she loved that sound, and this laugh in particular: a steady, rumbling chuckle that burrowed and quivered through every depth of her own being. That sleep truly had done him a world of good; she beamed into his gentled drowse as he replied: ‘I can’t imagine why anyone would be reluctant to stay with us.’

‘Seriously, darling,’ she said. ‘I’m a little worried about him – and a lot intrigued. He seems a decent chap – helped me this morning in the garden, 14—20 MAY, 2020 39

advising me on the weeds. But he … Hm.’ She wasn’t sure and yet she was: ‘I think he’s one of us.’

‘One of us?’ That brought Art a little more into the here and now of his waking-up. ‘That might be unlikely,’ he said. ‘There weren’t any natives in the army – not ours. No black Anzacs. Defence Act wouldn’t take darkies of any kind.’

Darkies – what a patronising, belittling snick of a word she thought that was; but she let it go and told her husband: ‘He was wearing old khakis – the bottom half, at least.’

Art shrugged: ‘Probably from a government store.

There’s an Aboriginal reserve or what have you over at Brewarrina – he’s probably come from there.’

‘Hm,’ she said in some vague agreeance, but she really didn’t think so. The man had murmured it so quietly she couldn’t quite hear, but she was sure he’d said he’d served with the Light Horse.

‘It’s a hard time for the blacks.’ Art gazed out towards the river. ‘Not that I know much about it, but it does seem that angry white men who’ve been betrayed by their country need to believe they’re not the lowest of the low – they need to be made to feel that way so they don’t start shooting at each other and tearing up the whole show. It’s always been bad for blacks, but I’d say it’s worse now.’

She knew too little of these Aboriginal people to guess at how, but wondered if men were shooting each other in the backstreets of Birmingham and Berlin – probably. Betrayal bears the cruellest fruit.

The brawls she’d seen behind the lines – over a woman, a beer, half a cigarette – one doesn’t simply turn that off on the ship home. There’s not much worse than men who should be friends fighting each other because – why? Because they were all torn apart inside, and those Aussies, always and ever so boastful for their unbreakable mateship, were not immune – indeed, she recalled they seemed to have served and received the worst of such black eyes.

She wondered for the millionth time how on earth it was that Art, in his always and ever gentleness, had survived at all. Must have been the sunshine he carried around, somewhere in there, thread-thin too regularly, but there – and here, right here, in his happy-sad smile.

A shiver ran up the back of her neck, as it did whenever the thought occurred: how had she survived? That sensation of life leaving under her hands, her useless, helpless hands, would never leave her: men, so young and beautiful, all of them.

How did it not drive her insane? Perhaps women found it easier to cope because they were never asked to kill or maim. She was never called upon to harm another – not that she was so full of the milk of human kindness that she’d never done so. She’d bullied a girl once at school, for no reason other than to try it, and she could be quite impatient, quite cutting when faced with another’s wilful stupidity.

But she’d never been paid wages to cause another pain – not counting all the pain she’d inflicted in the attempt to close wounds, not counting that one young man she’d slapped so hard in the attempt to bring him back from his hysterical delirium she could still feel the sting of it inside the bones of her hand.

But she had survived, so had Art, and she held his happy-sad smile within her stinging hand right now: ‘You’re all right, aren’t you.’

‘I am.’ He nodded, with a twitch of an eyebrow: wry. ‘Some strange woman came in and took mad,

passionate advantage of me this morning.’

‘Lucky you!’ She kissed his cheeks and the tip of his nose; his slightly crooked nose broken long ago not in war but in collision with a cricket bat, wicketkeeping, for his old club at Stanmore, the names of half his team having more recently shifted their gold block lettering from premiership victors of the living to the honour roll of the dead hanging on the walls of Petersham town hall.

‘Care to dance?’ His arms were already whisking her along the verandah boards.

‘Not until you’ve eaten something.’ She whisked him towards the kitchen door. ‘Something substantial.’

‘Always looking after me, aren’t you.’ He held her closer in gratitude.

‘Someone must.’ Sometimes, too oftentimes, she really did think the wounds of the world might fall apart again without her holding them closer still. At least, she knew Art would.

But Art was all right, he truly was, so it seemed.

They’d enjoyed a fortnight of ordinary Artness, October folding into November, the longest he’d gone without a mood for as long as she could remember, and she knew better than to think anything more of it than what it was: wonderful.

And so had been the rain: each afternoon those clouds would sweep up over the plain, drenching the soil and singing on the tin roof of the house for a good ten or fifteen minutes before rolling cheerfully onward. The earth deepened all its colours, all its own pleasure, the reds of the earth redder, the greens of the scrabbly grass greener and spreading across the land like hands seeking hands, and in every puddle stood flowers of a kind she’d never seen before: white globes atop tall, slender stems, their petals unfurling like feathery suns.

Oh boy but it was getting hot, though, the nights sticky and the days reaching such a searing temperature she couldn’t imagine what it might be like in summer here; and yet she could, and she welcomed the prospect, the very foreignness of such heat, when in her mind’s eye she could see her mother at home wrapping a favourite cashmere scarf around her neck and face until only her eyes peeped over it. Grace had written to her only the day before with the certain declaration she would not be cooking a roast turkey for Christmas dinner this year, not here in Sunshine. She didn’t know what they might have instead, though. Tomato sandwiches? Why not? And, possibly, seventeen ginand-tonics.

When she and Art had arrived in Sydney almost a year ago, the summer had been unusually cool, and so had the yuletide table of Art’s parents; as an only child herself, Grace had been accustomed to small festivities, but never with such a lack of actual festivity. She could understand the pall of grief that lay across every surface, of course; she knew that here was a son and a young country brutally blooded, irrevocably changed, sixty thousand lost to a war a million miles away, but she had felt like pointing out that the United Kingdom had lost ten times more and had not exactly forced Australia to join them at gunpoint. She’d kept her mouth shut, though, like the good little Pommy girl she was.

‘They don’t like me,’ Grace had whispered in the

night. ‘They don’t like anyone,’ Art had sighed, a well-versed regret. Her in-laws were, for better or worse, sour people – people that hadn’t, when all was said and done, lost much more in all the boundless tragedy than a few clients of their petty, suburban accountancy firm who’d had the temerity to get themselves killed overseas. Life was too brutally short to think too much more about them. Art didn’t, and he didn’t want a repeat of that Christmas dinner, either. She could certainly promise him that. This Christmas, she decided, would be a ritual reinvented

by Grace Lovelee alone. A true celebration of new life.

With these first inklings, she decided this morning to begin sandpapering the front flyscreen door, stripping it back in preparation for its new coat of paint. She’d already chosen the colour, to match the original – Art had brought home the paint selection chart from the hardware store in Bourke.

‘Pale Blue’, it was called, this colour, according to the Aladdin paint company at least, and the name did its prettiness no justice, she thought once more as she looked over at the tin waiting there on the kitchen table. Over this past fortnight, the house had revealed more and more of its original prettiness: tiles surrounding the hearth in the rear parlour showed themselves after a scrub to have been glazed with an exquisitely detailed pattern of grapes and vine leaves; an excursion under the back verandah turned up a handsome marble bench seat and a three-foot-tall sculpture of a cherub posing on a scroll-topped plinth. While cleaning out the fitted cupboard in the laundry, two creased and faded photographs had slid out from under a pile of old drapes, all stinking with rat doings: one showed a horse by a fence; the other, this house, with a title marked beneath it in white block lettering – ‘Kiriella’ – because even its name must be pretty. And then, while attacking the garden-jungle again, she’d found an ornately crafted bronze-wire birdcage in the midst of the blackberry tangle; of course they’d never put a bird in such a thing, so instead it now stood in welcome on the front verandah with Art’s moth-eaten boyhood toy monkey leaning jauntily by the open door. She had no idea now, though, where she’d put her sheets of sandpaper – for the flyscreen door.

Hadn’t Art brought them in with the paint? Perhaps he had but had then pinched them for himself, she thought – I’ll go and pinch them back.

She donned her floppy hat against the scorching, almost midday sun. ‘Darling!’ she called across the yard as she walked towards the river and the potting shed he’d knocked together beside his now completed colonnades of shade. This potting shed was a place where many things seemed to have disappeared to since its construction seven days ago: three teacups; two spoons and a fork; her nail scissors and all of her silk stockings, including a new pair purchased on leaving Sydney, which she hadn’t yet worn. ‘Darling Art, do you have my sandpaper?’ she called, not sure where he was, as she couldn’t see him anywhere.

But she could see his colonnades – and oh how she might forgive him anything at the sight. Beneath their canvas sails his seed beds lay, and along the centre of this nearest colonnade, raised above his trays of strawberry, rockmelons and honeydew just gone in, a trough made of tin ran full length, and hanging over its edges either side were strips of those silk stockings of hers, carrying water drip by drip – at optimum quantity, so Art said. The whole

thing looked like a gigantic centipede, and God did it thrill her from her toes to her fingertips. ‘The Arthur Adam Lovelee Drip Irrigation System brought to you by Kayser Rolette Hosiery,’ he’d said. ‘Bona fide genius,’ she’d said. He might have been mad, this husband of hers, but oh he was clever.

If anything was going to help heal the insult and injury of his talents at engineering having been used to plot Death’s trenches and mine tunnels, surely this was it.

But, in fact, this was only one half of it. He had yet to build his sprinklers for the citrus and stone-fruit and sultana rootstock yet to arrive. The labour agent in town had been having difficulty finding a truck to bring the young trees from the train, after their trip up from Nyngan, one hundred and thirty miles, and then quickly from the station so as to avoid boiling the delicate cargo prior to arrival – but Art was in no rush now. Grace smiled at the first of the germinating honeydew, tiny lime squiggles coming up for light, for life, for air, as she called her husband again: ‘Art! Where art Art! My hearty Art!’ Still no answer, but that didn’t worry her: like many men who’d spent any time on the Western Front, he was a little bit deaf.

She popped her head into the potting shed but he wasn’t there either; her sandpaper was, though, and she pocketed that on her way through, continuing down to the river, to see if he was there.

Now, Grace’s hearing, like all her senses, was exceptionally acute, and she heard what she thought was music coming from the old schoolhouse a little way away – and not music she’d heard out here before.

A harmonica …

Had he bought himself a new musical toy? It wouldn’t have surprised her. But as she took a step closer, she heard her dear Art singing now above the mellowly lilting tune. My, my was his a honeyed voice, so rich, so deep – it was golden syrup on toasted crumpets. He was singing a song she’d certainly heard before, because it was one of those composed by none other than himself, and she knew every word: ‘I met a marvellous English girl And she was sparkling fair.

Red roses kissed her smiling cheek And silken was her hair.

The sun lit every path she took And danced in every curl.

Her eyes were bright with love and light, Oh that lovely English girl.

‘My own light gone, my heart worn through, She came and sat by me.

She took my hand inside her own, She set my spirit free.

She brought the sun inside her smile, She danced, though I could not.

She coaxed me from my misery And returned what I’d forgot.

‘A miracle, she was, my English girl.

She raised me from the dead.

She found me in pieces, smashed to bits, And put me together again.

Her small hand upon my khaki sleeve, Her courage large, my pearl.

She fixes all my brokenness, My marvellous English girl.’

There wasn’t much these days that could bring Grace a tear, but that song did it every time, and not just because the sentiment was the prettiest thing of all. It cut through her usual steady resolve, as it reminded her in some fundamental way that she’d have preferred not to always have to be so bloody marvellous.

‘By gee …’ another voice offered hushed appreciation, a man’s voice, and one she recognised to be Jack Bell’s by its unrushed, tender rasp, as he added: ‘There’s a song for the ages, ay.’

Indeed. She couldn’t see either of them from where she was, by the side wall of the schoolhouse, except for the toe of one of Art’s scuffed-up work boots. His legs stretched out, he must have been sitting with his back to the front wall, Jack Bell somewhere with him there. She hadn’t seen Jack since the day he’d helped her in the garden, though she’d wondered where he might be; she’d searched for him along the riverbank but found no sign of him except a bundle of charcoaled logs where his campfire had been. She’d wondered if he’d moved on; she’d wondered if that so-and-so McGlynn had caused him to. But perhaps he’d only been staying in the old schoolhouse all along, to keep out of the squally rainstorms. This thought caused a whisper of happiness to slip through her, like sunlight on her soul, like the warm breeze at her back. She wasn’t sure why, except that it seemed somehow right: that he was here, and here with Art. She heard Jack Bell murmur something about not meeting any sweethearts in Palestine, ‘My nurse had a big hairy moustache …’ And Art laughed. They laughed together for a good minute solid, like boys.

Whatever this exchange was between them, it was an intimate one.

Grace left them to it, making her way back to the house, watching the rise of the clouds as she walked.

She winked at Monkey in his cage on the verandah, impersonating Art: ‘What do you reckon, then, hm?’

Then she set to work on the flyscreen door.

She wasn’t sure how long she’d been at it, but she’d unscrewed the door from its frame and was almost finished sanding the whole front side when Art called up from the yard, impersonating himself in caricature: ‘Put the kettle on then, missus.’

‘What a good idea, darling.’ She grinned at him as he neared: ‘Two sugars, please.’

He would happily oblige, but he sat on the step by her first, his hat on his knee. ‘I met that native fellow Jack Bell,’ he said.

‘Did you?’ she replied, as if she didn’t know; and she kept on with the sandpaper, around one of the fretworked swirls.

‘Yes,’ Art told her. ‘I saw him harvesting some leaves off a shrub, some sort of bush tea, in that patch of scrub where the track towards Brewarrina winds east beyond our fence. I was curious, we got chatting, and, well, he’s an interesting chap. You know, he served with the Light Horse.’

‘You don’t say.’

‘I do.’ He told her: ‘He did his most spectacular bit in the charge on Beersheba.’ Art paused and added: ‘Rough stuff there, it was.’

‘Hm.’ Grace stopped her sandpapering and sat back on her heels. She never went to the Near East herself, but she knew enough second-hand to nod at her husband’s gravity with some understanding: the capture of Beersheba had been a bloodbath

as horrific as any of them. All those horses… Such wholesale slaughter of such innocence. Grace had seen too much of all that in France, carcasses left wherever they fell, eternally unpeaceful, still steaming under circling crows. What on earth for?

‘Hm.’ Art gazed back out towards his colonnades.

‘Only got worse for our Jack Bell. When he returned home, to Queensland initially, he found the police had taken his child away.’

‘What?’ Grace wasn’t sure she’d heard that correctly. ‘Taken his what away?’

‘His child, yes,’ Art replied, and then explained: ‘The child was bundled off to who knows where.

A common thing these days, for Aborigines, halfcastes generally, and especially if a child isn’t being cared for.’

‘Was the child not being cared for?’ she asked, still not quite fathoming.

‘Well, I don’t know about that, do I.’ Art shrugged, and then he sighed: ‘But Jack Bell said his wife was devoted to her – their daughter. Smashed his little family to bits. How about that, hm?’

‘How about that, all right.’ Grace was almost disbelieving that any such thing could happen to anyone. ‘But what can he do, to put it right?’

‘Nothing,’ said Art, and in such a matter-of-fact way dread rippled through her. ‘Aborigines are controlled by the state,’ her husband explained further and more dreadfully. ‘They don’t get a say in these sorts of things. Or anything, really. They’re told where to live, where to go, what to do. The little girl is probably in an orphans’ home now, or something like that.’

‘Oh. Is that so.’ Grace didn’t know what to do with this information. As an Englishwoman, and an intelligent, too-worldly one, she was not naïve to the consequences of being on the losing side of Empire, but she’d never heard of anything so deplorable before. What was Jack Bell? A horse? The man had served this Empire and was now both homeless and family-less. There had to be something she could do, to put it right; but she didn’t know what that might be – yet.

‘Anyway,’ said Art, getting to his feet again, ‘for a few bob, Jack has agreed to help me prepare the field for planting out the melons.’

‘Oh good.’ There’s one thing they could do for him: pay him. Pay him agency-rate wages, without the agency-rate fee deductions. Yes, Grace Lovelee might have been relatively fresh off the boat as regards the Australian way – of arcane labour laws and state incarceration of blameless children – but she could break a rule as well as any of them.

‘He’s keen to help me with the sprinkler rig-up, too,’ Art added as he stepped around her and into the house. ‘Keen on things mechanical. Good bloke, decent sort of fellow …’ His voice trailed away as he left her.

She smiled to herself: God – ever almightily capricious in His bestowal of gifts – certainly moved mysteriously here. Her darling Art, it appeared, had made a friend. In all the time she’d known him, he’d not really had one of them – not a friend that wasn’t hers, not a friend who was alive, or who had survived the gulf that gaped between those who’d served and those who’d stayed behind.

A friend. Perhaps. But even the perhaps was wonderful enough.

unlikely that he’d have come from anywhere else.

She returned to her sandpapering; Art brought her out that cup of tea and then fell into a doze before drinking his own – she could hear him snoring from the lounge. As the afternoon stretched, there came a slow rolling rumble of thunder, and another, and rain pattered and plinked on the tin awning above her, teeming a moment before it swept on; the welcome swallows zoomed about up in the rafters, protecting their precious eggs: three of them, there were. She’d got up on a step ladder a few days ago to see: three perfect little eggs, of palest pink and speckled grey.

‘And what brings you out this way?’ she asked, daring to send a little arrogance back at him.

Yes, horror was everywhere, injustice was everywhere, the whole globe over, but, thought Grace, new life is here. New life in this most ancient of lands.

She was almost finished sanding the back of the flyscreen door when a man on a horse appeared at the gate, dismounting to let himself in. A policeman: instantly recognisable by the smart white britches and navy tunic. It wasn’t the same fellow who’d come out to visit them when they’d first arrived, though – the rather dopey but congenial, hunchshouldered Sergeant Greavy. This policeman was sharper in bearing, young and leaner all over, and he narrowed his eyes as he touched the brim of his helmet in greeting: ‘Afternoon, Mrs Lovelee, is it?’

‘Good afternoon.’ She stood. She couldn’t have said why precisely, but it was distrust at first sight.

‘Sergeant Brandell,’ he said. Saaargeant Braaandell had an outback drawl that sounded like it had been put through a circular saw, and he placed the heel of his tall black boot on the bottom step, in a none-toosubtle display of authority. ‘From Bourke,’ he added with an air of arrogance, and unnecessarily, as it was

‘I’m looking for a black called Bell, Jack Bell, said to be living out here on the river. He’s wanted by the police.’

‘Wanted?’ Grace didn’t know what to think of that.

She’d stared down far worse than this fancied-up bobby, but he sent a bolt of fear through her, oh yes, he did.

He said: ‘That’s right. Wanted. By order of the District Superintendent. I have a warrant for Bell’s arrest from Bourke Police Court.’

‘A warrant for whom?’ She feigned confusion, but didn’t have to feign too hard. If Jack Bell had done something wrong, it could be nothing next to the wrongs that had been done to him – surely?

‘A man called Jack Bell,’ the policeman repeated.

‘Six feet tall, about thirty years of age. Aborigine.

Unlawful vagrant. Possibly dangerous.’

‘Dangerous?’ She could make no sense of that at all; the man she’d met had had too much of a gentleness about him. Surely?

‘Yes, dangerous,’ the policeman repeated himself once more. ‘Any blacks at large and unsupervised on any areas of settlement are considered dangerous.’

‘Dangerous.’ She sent the word back at this young man who quite possibly did not share her own understandings of danger. She told him: ‘I’m sure I haven’t seen the man you describe.’

‘Seen who?’ Art appeared beside her now, shambling inside a yawn and saluting down at the policeman: ‘Hello there, you must be Brandell, are

How many chickens can fit into the car?

None, the car is already full of gorillas.

He: Just call in sick then.

you? The new chap?’ He was pouring on the charm: ‘Come in! Come in! I was just about to crack open a bottle or two – join me, won’t you?’

‘Don’t mind if I do,’ the young policeman swaggered up the stairs, full of his own importance, and as he clomped his way into the house, Art gave her a wink and some pretence of his own: ‘Go and fetch my cigarettes, will you, love – I left them in the shed.’

He did not need to issue any further directive: she had to go and warn Jack.

Her steps were quick across the yard; the very image of the dutiful wife.

But when she got down to the old schoolhouse, there was no one there. Even the remains of the campfire had vanished. All trace of Jack Bell was gone.
