THIRTY DEATHS IN EIGHT DAYS screamed the headlines in Lithgow a little over one hundred years ago.

On 31st March 1919, David Owen, Lithgow Municipal Health Officer, was moved to write the Mayor of Lithgow a letter*. In it he said: Dr Hutley, Local Government Medical Officer has summoned me to his residence and informed me that an outbreak of pneumonic influenza had occurred in the municipality and that at least five persons are suffering from the disease.

As a result of his letter a meeting of doctors and aldermen was held and it was decided that, as the isolation ward at the local hospital was fully occupied, the local school should be closed down and the building used as a makeshift hospital.

The Town Clerk was then asked to take the necessary steps to do this.

However, it wasn’t until much later in the week that, after repeated telephone calls had been made, the matter was accomplished by the reception of a wire.

Or a telegram.

The pandemic was increasing in the Lithgow district with an average of four deaths a day. Between 10th and 30th April, eighty-one people died.

To add to the problem, doctors and nurses, who had worked tirelessly with little rest, were becoming ill themselves.

There was a crisis in the cemetery: gravediggers were in short supply.

Nothing seemed to stop the onslaught of the disease which seemed to be hitting the young and previously fit.

In 1919, more than six thousand people died in NSW from what was called

PANDEMIC! the Spanish Flu. Perhaps as many as 15,000 died overall in Australia and, probably, between 20 and 50 million world-wide. The origin of that variety of the influenza virus was not Spain at all. The disease was first observed in mid-west USA and probably spread to Europe via American troops during the latter part of the First World War. It arrived in Australia in the beginning of 1919 despite quarantine measures being instigated on ships arriving from abroad.

Restrictions on internal movement, quarantine camps and even a vaccine were all introduced fairly rapidly but with predictable fractiousness between the states and the new Federal Government.

This month the Orange Oral History Group met to discuss their own experiences with the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic and the changes to our way of living that may possibly occur in the future.

No one in our group seems to have resented the restrictions which were imposed upon us and voiced approval at the way the authorities had reacted.

Of course, we in Orange have been very fortunate in that we have barely been touched at all. In parts of Sydney and particularly in Melbourne it has been different. Dick told us: “My son lives in Melbourne. He was restricted to a 5k limit from home and living alone and working from home took some getting used to.

“There were some problems with relationships during the lockdown.

A colleague of my son went to

Queensland to see his girlfriend just before the Pandemic and then they were forced to be isolated together for quite some time. It broke up their friendship completely.

And another couple I knew decided to go on a caravan trip and their marriage ended after the enforced isolation together!”

Fran thought of the problems that beset some people:

Reg, who is in aged care, has a wonderful attitude to adversity. He is used to facing difficult situations, having been a bushman and a drover over his long life. He had nothing but praise for the way he was looked after during isolation although naturally missed visiting his mates.

Finally, we wondered if the changes in lifestyle we have experienced will stay with us. Will we keep washing hands, avoiding close contact and staying home with colds or flu?

Doreen seemed to think there were habits we might adopt:

“Alcohol abuse seems to have been a problem. It wasn’t easy for many people to work and at the same time to try to home-school their children, especially if they didn’t have the correct equipment or space.”

Some families made the best of it and found themselves enjoying the time with their children to walk together and do things in ways they hadn’t done for years.

Ann told us of one little boy who asked recently: “Why can’t we go back to lockdown?”

Richard held us riveted when he explained his experience in Isolation.

As we listened to him with sympathy, he told us with a straight face: “Just before it all began, I had been to Egypt and suddenly I was told I would have to get back to Australia as soon as possible and go into hotel isolation.

“It was dreadful!

“I was put into a hotel at Circular Quay, with three bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and lounge, TV and a full fridge and three meals a day. I really had a terrible time!”

“There could be changes in the workforce. There may be no fixed desks, more working from home leading to less traffic on the roads and less air pollution as a result.”

Keith thought there was more respect for medical authorities and Leslye agreed that we might have more time if we travelled to work less and were not so stressed in traffic.

It is difficult for any of us to know what the future will bring. We do realise that we have been, so far, far less affected by this pandemic than we might have been.

Our thoughts are with the people of India and other parts of the world who have been far less fortunate.

People are even now moving out of cities and finding the joys of a more peaceful life. Could this all lead eventually to a more contented way of living?

Packing apples at Coote’s Orchard Autumn is always a busy time of year on Orange district orchards as the apple and pear crops are harvested. Back in the 1950s and 60s, many district orchards were family-run affairs, with everyone pitching in to pick, pack and despatch the fruit.

This week’s photo shows packing in full flow at Coote’s Orchard in Lone Pine Avenue in April 1969 after rain had delayed the harvest.
