TIMEWARP Wheelbarrows race along Summer Street

Crowds blocked Summer Street in September 1957 to allow a wheelbarrow race to take place, which stopped all other traffic. The race was organised to raise funds for the Cherry Blossom Queen candidates. The four ‘jockeys’ were local radio personalities Colin Barrett of 2GZ, Ian McDonald of 2BS, Doug Woodward of 2GZ and John Morley of 2CR. The referee, sporting a monocle and riding a bicycle, was 2GZ’s John Tingay, who disqualified all the teams for various ‘offences’.

“Music is the art which is most nigh to tears and memory” Oscar Wilde In July 1871, news of the end of the Franco-Prussian War reached the tent settlements on the gold fields of NSW and the gold miners who hailed from the countries involved in the conflict, rejoiced in the best way they knew. They took out their musical instruments and played and sang and danced together in a great display of emotion and unity.

Music has always been a most satisfying way of releasing emotions, whether happy or sad and throughout the years popular music styles have reflected society and have evolved with the changes that are taking place in the world.

We thought back to our own parents’ time when the music they liked very often offended our ears, just as our preferences amazed them.

Then there were the crooners like Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and Dean Martin, followed by Frank Sinatra who had “the bobbysoxers” swooning over him.

Not only is our taste in music influenced by changes in society, but also with technological advances and the new styles and new ways of listening to it.

I remember the musical evenings my parents used to have after dinner when friends would bring their music and either play an instrument or sing a solo.

Dinah Shore, Rosemary Cooney and Doris Day sang the romantic songs we loved.

The Oral History group thought about their own musical tastes and experiences and the sounds that had given them the most delight.

This seemed to me to be all very serious but they apparently enjoyed it, much to my surprise!

And “ delight” is the word which really describes our experiences with music as became obvious when we began to search our memories.

Of course, it was always the music of our youth which we found most appealing.

We pondered over this and decided that it was then that our emotions were probably at their peak and that every generation cherishes the music of that particular time when they were young and most romantic.

Tim and Glenna both pointed out that balladeers had always told stories .

As expected most people in the group preferred the music of the, 40s and 50s.

Stuart, who described modern music as “frenzied”, studied classical music on the piano until he was 16 and his taste remains with the classics.

Wartime songs by the English singer, Vera Lynn, were hot favourites, even with Gillian who was only seven when the war ended.

Those patriotic songs were certainly stirring and, as most people agreed, the advantage was “you could hear the words”!

Blues and jazz and the big bands of Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, Tommy

“I think the biggest change in music over the years is the fact that it used to be a group thing.” said John Coxhill.

“People of all ages stood around the piano and sang together for entertainment. Community singing in the old music halls was also very common.”

Many of our group could remember seeing the organist at Sydney cinemas rising from beneath the stage playing before the film began.

And, although none of us are quite old enough to have actually seen it, there was always a pianist skilfully accompanying the silent film with music to suit the action on screen.

Dot wondered if people whistle as much as they used to - or sing as they work around the house.

Joan and Tim mentioned that music has been used as therapy for disturbed people with great success while Glenna observed that lullabies have been sung to babies almost since the world began.

One of the most popular ways of appreciating music for Russell, Mick and Tim was going to dances where, as Russell pointed out enthusiastically “it was a great place to meet girls.”

Mick was given a radio with a gramophone attached for his 21st birthday and he enlivened many a party with his 78 records.

Pat could remember an old windup gramophone on which her family would play their favourite music.

“You had to keep winding it up because if you didn’t the record would go slower and slower and end with a groaning sound,” she told us.

As technology has become more sophisticated, not only has the sound become clearer but also louder as John pointed out.

“There appear to be problems developing with hearing among those who have been exposed to high levels of sound for extended periods”, he said.

While in our youth we listened to music on the radio and gramophones, today many people listen through headphones to the extent that they seem to be lost in a private world of sound which often makes them unaware of their surroundings.

The Oral History group wondered if this might prevent people enjoying the real world.

It will certainly be interesting to see the changes in the way we play , listen to and create music in the future but I’m afraid that we will probably all stubbornly stick to the music of the days when we were young and romantic.

On Saturday, May 15 approximately 20 volunteers spent time at Kenna Hall working for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. They were busy working on a variety of projects making items for inclusion in the Christmas boxes that are sent to children in third world countries. It is often the first time the children have received a Christmas gift. Each year, this group make and collect lots of items that are packaged up and sent overseas. The centre is also a collection point for many other groups and individuals from the nearby areas that prepare boxes or individual items for inclusion to the boxes.
