INLAND OFFERS THE BEST BLINDS AND SHUTTERS ON THE MARKET Hans and Jackie Reinhardt came to Millthorpe 20-years ago with one simple aim — to make the best venetian blinds on the market.

T

wo decades on, “Inland Blinds & Shutters” is still operating from the old mill factory from which the scenic village derives its name, with shop outlets now in Orange and Bathurst.

“We came to Millthorpe from Sydney to start a factory producing timber venetian and plantation timber components from Western Red Cedar which we imported from Canada,” Hans explained.

“These parts were wholesaled to blind and shutter manufacturers, mainly in Sydney,” he said, adding that the lure of the retail market soon enticed their interest.

“About 2004, we decided to go into retailing finished timber blinds using the trading name ‘The Wood Blinds Factory’ with a showroom and

factory in Millthorpe.

“Some-time later, we opened a retail shop and showroom in Adelaide but found the constant travel to keep that business supplied with stock and the management of it, too taxing for us and closed that business, opening a showroom in Bathurst instead. A little bit closer to home this time.”

Hans then explained that about this time, that window fashion tastes changed in this country with the dominant colour for shutters and venetian blinds becoming white rather than natural wood colours. There was also a strong trend towards fabric roller blinds for new homes.

“This made some of our cedar products redundant as cedar is far-too-expensive to

paint white and, if the beautiful cedar grain is not appreciated, we had to turn to imported Basswood shutters to stay competitive, as well having to connect with roller blind manufacturers to satisfy customer demand,” Hans said.

“The name ‘Woodblind Factory’ started to go against-us at this stage because that was not all we did anymore, so we changed our tradename to ‘Inland Blinds & Shutters’.”

Having a presence in Orange and Bathurst became a huge step forward for the company with the distance for clients to visit greatly reduced from these towns with both showrooms becoming busier than they have ever been.

“We still manufacture timber venetian blinds to customers specifications, but now we also

have vast experience with plantation shutters which we install in houses of all styles and ages with our very experienced team, all this at prices which we believe are unbeatable in the central west,” Hans added.

“If you supply us with the measurements of your windows, you will receive an immediate quote from us including any discounts we have at various times.

“We also supply Flex-Fence and wood-grained aluminium shutters to create outdoor shelters.

HistoryTALKING with HELEN McANULTY

Some time ago, I came across a modest little book of poetry.

It had been many years out of print, but written by a quite remarkable woman.

She was born in England in 1817, and was educated in England and France while Napoleon was in exile on St Helena.

She remembered the troublesome times of the Chartist riots and the Reform Bill and saw the first steam boat launched.

Her name was Emily Mary Barton and she was the grandmother of Andrew Barton Paterson.

In her poem “Easter Rain on the Bogan” she wrote: “ Now rushing o’er the shelving bank, streams gather in the clay-bound tank.

Now every stately forest tree bows as it weeps in ecstasy.

And from the creek the torrent’s roar calls deep and hoarse, ‘the drought is o’er’.

‘Tis wildly raining !…Thank God, it’s raining.’

Although these lines were written over 120 years ago, the heartfelt thankfulness is much the same as we feel today when we hear the first drops falling on the parched earth.

When Emily Mary Barton composed them in 1896, she had already spent half a century in the Australian bush.

She knew the hardships, problems, and dangers of bringing-up nine children on an isolated property after having arrived in Sydney with her family from England in 1839.

In 1840, she married Robert Barton whom she had met on the voyage and moved to Boree Nerang, a property about 32 kilometres from Molong.

Her sisters also settled in the

Emily Mary Barton BANJO’S GRAN WAS A POET TOO Orange district, one marrying Henry Kater and the other JH Templar, who owned the mill in Narrambla Vale.

Emily Mary was indeed a remarkable woman. She had lived in Belgium and France as a child and was fluent in French, Italian and German and, with sufficient knowledge of Greek and Latin, to be able to teach her own and the station children.

Life was not uneventful on the isolated property which saw its fair share of bushrangers and other doubtful characters, who sought refuge in the Canobolas mountains.

She coped with loneliness during the gold rush of the 1850s, when most of the station hands and her husband were away for considerable lengths of time.

She suffered the loss of a child and the long convalescence of her husband when he badly fractured a leg.

In spite of all this, she still loved the bush and said as much in a letter to her sister, Betsy, soon after settling at Boree Nyrang. “ I think you know me too well to suppose I am frightened by the idea of living in a slab hut and doing without many things….I love the country and so does Robert and I can devote myself to happiness better in the smallest, lowliest dwelling where we would feel at home than in the hot dusty confined streets of Sydney.”

Twenty four years later, Emily’s daughter, Rose, gave birth to a son in her sisters home at Narrambla, known locally as Templars Mill.

The baby was named Andrew Barton and was to become famous as “Banjo Paterson”.

When Emily’s beloved husband died of pneumonia in 1863, Emily moved to “Rockend”, a stone cottage on the Parramatta River.

It was here that the young Banjo Paterson lived while he attended Sydney Grammar School and it was in his grandmothers house that he was surrounded by her interests in art, music, and literature.

The fact that she was also a poet with a published collection, “Straws on the Stream", may also have had an influence on him.

In fact, we can find an echo of Emily Mary’s love of the bush and dislike of the city in one of his more famous poems, “Clancy of the Overflow.”

“I am sitting in my dingy little office where a stingy ray of sunshine struggles feebly down between the houses tall, And the fetid air and gritty of the dusty, dirty city Through the open window floating Spreads its foulness over all”.

Andrew Barton, known as “Barty” to his family, continued to live at his grandmothers house while he studied law as an articled clerk, and at 21, he qualified for admission to the roll of solicitors.

Although he claimed to “sometimes rather fancy that I’d like too change with Clancy”, he spent much of his time in the city while writing evocative poems of the bush.

Mrs Ann Bowman, whose mother was Paterson's first cousin, told me an anecdote which illustrates his well known love of horses.

When “Barty” was about to leave for the Boer War, his uncle gave him a rather special horse to take with him.

Being a young man about town and belonging to, a few very respectable clubs, he knew just where to find something to keep the horses’ feet warm on the voyage.

From the austere gentlemen’s club, he borrowed a mat and the horse had a comfortable voyage to Africa.
