No, this was not 2021, but during the poliomyelitis epidemics which disrupted our communities in 1938.

Throughout history, humans have suffered catastrophic pandemics which have killed millions of people.

“A boy in my class died and the rest of us were horrified”, John B told us.

"My cousin lost the use of his legs for quite a while.”

VACCINES catching smallpox.

He took the unusual and rather dangerous step of testing his ideas on the young son of a neighbour and, finding it worked, he inoculated his first patient successfully, thus earning the title of “the father of immunisation.”

Smallpox was eradicated by 1979 and Jenner was credited with creating the medical science of vaccination.

Influenza, which was first recorded in 1850, was responsible for the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1919 that killed between 50 and 100 million people.

Miraculously in 1955, a vaccine was developed by Dr Jonas Salk and became known obviously, as “the Salk vaccine”, and which saved millions from the devastating after-effects of the illness.

There is a long list of infections which have been effectively controlled by vaccination, including tetanus, whooping cough, measles, mumps, rubella, influenza, hepatitis and pneumococcal infections, tetanus and shingles.

Although the Orange Oral History group is in lockdown, I was able to contact them for their reactions to having vaccinations for these diseases.

And they were unanimous.

They were all so thankful to be protected against the many horrible infections.

“I never questioned the need for vaccination” said Leslye. “Especially when I saw a picture of President Roosevelt who’d had polio.”

Most of the group had friends or relatives who had caught Polio and remembered the lives they lived when they were disabled from the disease.

Glenna was enthusiastic.

“We felt so lucky to have vaccines.

We saw so many who had had polio.

My cousin had a withered arm as a result of the illness.”

Richard agreed: “I saw it first-hand as my older brother had a withered arm too due to catching Polio so I was never worried about being vaccinated against it.”

Karrilyn had seen a boy with tetanus which had horrifying symptoms like lockjaw, painful fits, and fever but now a vaccine is given to us routinely.

We turned our attention then to measles which was a frightening disease with quite a few side-effects.

“I remember being very ill with measles,” said Barbara. “And I was so relieved that my children were able to be vaccinated.”

Doreen used to worry about TB and told us : “people feared it so much.”

John, who worked with livestock, pointed-out that vaccination had long been used successfully in that field, and they were very used to it.

He also thought that, as we were not as well-off as we are today, we were more willing to accept things which would make life better.

We concluded that we are so lucky nowadays to have all these improvements in controlling infectious diseases and we should eagerly take advantage of them.
