New leadership at the top in NSW seems to be prioritising our economic recovery a little higher, with more emphasis on getting back our lives without the constant fear of another economically-crippling quarantine if case numbers increase.

In signs of more green shoots in our recovery from the two-year pandemic, we feature in this issue an upbeat interview with Helen Corby, local head of cancer charity provider Can Assist, promoting their first event since March – a charity fundraiser at one of Orange’s best-known gardens.

Spring Garden Ramble to raise funds for Can Assist Can Assist have been providing support for country people with cancer since 1955 with 55 branches throughout NSW. The group offers a range of practical services including financial assistance for those experiencing cancer.

This can include for: accommodation; travel, medical; food vouchers, utility bills, and vehicle maintenance.

The Orange group’s next major fundraiser is this weekend’s (Saturday and Sunday, October 16–17) Spring Garden Ramble at No. 1 Squatters Ridge, Clifton Grove from 10–5pm.

Cost is only $10 per person with children free with morning and afternoon tea also available on-site.

with cancer to pay their way reat re-opening has begun. And for local charitable groups like Can Assist, it can’t come soon enough.

Can Assist provides financial support for those living with cancer in the central west with the group holding their first big fund-raiser since March.

The Spring Garden Ramble — events from which the charity raise almost all their funding — will be held this Saturday and Sunday, October 16–17 at Clifton Grove.

For local president, Helen Corby, the event is a chance for the group to get back to their work in helping those living with cancer.

“We had a couple of training nights in February/March, and that was it. So, it will be good to get back into it,” Helen said.

Helen is one of those volunteers who are the bedrock of local not-for-profits for whom their work is also very personal but who got involved with the charity almost by accident.

and I thought, ‘this is a great charity’ and I joined,” Helen explained.

Her financial experience working for years for local financial institutions however proved immediately useful.

“After school and TAFE, I worked for the financial group IAC in the mid-1960s before leaving to have a couple of children,” Helen said.

“They needed a new treasurer, and I had been treasurer at Duntryleague and worked for a general accountant, so I took it on,” she said.

Her background dovetailed perfectly into the group’s major role — providing financial support to individuals and families struggling financially with cancer in country NSW. “We provide financial support, we’re an organisation to help you practically and financially. If you can’t afford your bills because of your treatment, phone bills and the like.

“We have a regime of things, but they have to be related to the cancer patient,” she said.

Dozens of local people a year receive this support with almost all their funding from three or four major events.

“I know how cancer affects people; I went through it with my Dad who wouldn’t talk about it to us. He was a big strong, really strong man, and to see how it affected him…” she said.

“We also have a monthly trivia night at Duntryleague, but we haven’t had major event since February/March this year so, hopefully, we’ll get a few in for October/ November,” Helen said.

“What happened was, I play golf at Duntryleague and Can Assist used to meet there once a month after Tuesday Ladies Golf Day. Friends were going to the meetings, and they sounded like a good charity.

Events can include movie nights, art exhibitions, garden rambles, and golf days, with Helen estimating the group has lost perhaps 12-months of fund-raising since the pandemic hit in February last year.

“So, I went to a few meetings and sat in the background,

“Duntryleague has always supported us, year in year-

out… we normally raise about $45,000 per year, our membership hasn’t dropped, but our events have had to be put on-hold during the lockdowns,” Helen said.

While the pandemic has cost the group nearly a year’s fundraising, new clients keep coming through needing support.

“People are still turning-up, we’re still getting two, three, four a month who need our help.

“These are people referred to us from social workers at the hospital, but they don’t usually speak to us, we just support then with financial support although we don’t provide cash, we can help with vouchers for food and travel, that sort of thing,” she said.

Can Assist has more than 50 branches in country with the Orange group one of the longest running in the State. The local group has also found a helping hand from one of the online companies that compare greenslip costs for cars.

“We had a farmer who had a greenslip that had to be paid, we contacted Steven Treacey at Greenslips.com and he said, ‘I’ll pay if for you’ and then he sent us a $3000 donation, he’s helped us out with a whole lot more greenslips since then,’ Helen said.

Helen says that those interested in helping the group can be as involved as little or as much as they wish.

“We’ve got about 70 members, but we’ve suffered very little drop since the pandemic… people can be volunteers without being a member, it’s all up to you,” Helen concluded.

Council election rushing-up as we approach ground zero English novelist Evelyn Waugh — detailing his time as a paratrooper in World War II in his “Sword of Honour” trilogy — provides at one point a vivid account of his first parachute jump.

He describes the euphoric sense of weightlessness, seemingly floating in the air, and then the sudden rush of earth upwards as he approaches terra firma (solid ground).

The NSW Local Government elections, at which a new Council for Orange will be chosen by ratepayers, has been a bit like that.

Put off firstly from September last year, and then September this, the elections are now slated, barring another leap in COVID-19 infection numbers, for Saturday, December 4. Like the fictional soldier in the novels jumping out of a plane and seemingly suspended in space, we are all now suddenly quite close to the ground, with the vote less than two months away.

While it’s common for excited politicians to describe every election as “the most important in a generation”, this one, being held in the tail-end of a two-year worldwide pandemic that has seen utterly unpredicted impacts on how we interact as a society, will be interesting.

Because no-one would deny that our world has changed dramatically since we last went to the polls in September 2017, before words like “herd immunity”, “social distancing”, “QR Codes”, “PPE”, “self-isolation” and “super spreader events”, became household phrases.

They seem now such innocent days, and it can be quite a shock to look back at footage of people at football games, dances, rock concerts (remember those?) all crowded together, chatting, singing, cheering and laughing, without fear of COVID-19.

Stay-at-home orders, lockdowns,

quarantines, travel bubbles, and bans on most interstate and almost all international travel, have proven the old adage that “life is local”, now more than ever. This social change also seems reflected in a sudden interest in how Orange City Council goes about its business.

Decisions like the controversial removal of hundreds of trees for a proposed sports stadium at south Orange, a proposed pedestrian mall in Anson St, the future of Orange’s water supply, all seem a lot more central to our well-being and future than they may have done in a more typical year.

There is a sense that this Council is now finishing up its business with a bang, with proposals to remove another 500 trees at Bloomfield, plans released for the proposed mountain bike trails on Mt Canobolas, and the recent announcement of a hand-over of the Northern Distributor to the Roads and Maritime Services.

But activist and engaged decisionmaking in itself, doesn’t always lead to good governance. A friend once relayed a story from when he was touring the Texas State legislature in America. Upon asking their guide how often the politicians sat in the Chamber, he expressed surprise to hear that it was only for one week a year.

“We don’t let those boys get together too often,” was the response from the guide, indicating the independentminded “Y’all leave us alone” view many Texans have of Government interference in their lives.

Leaving well alone... that would be a radical approach for our new Council to take!

The shift to downsize is on the rise For anyone thinking of moving house, it can initially feel as though there are multiple barriers in the way. So when that decision comes later in life and involves selling the family home for something a little smaller, many people can feel like there are even more things holding them back: the legacy of the family house, memories and belongings to name a few, but as those who have gone through it can attest, by letting go there’s even more to gain.

Just ask Oak Tree residents Marie and Bill Dempsey. “It’s the best decision we’ve ever made and we’re enjoying it more than we thought possible,” they said. Besides, downsizing is an opportunity to streamline your life, free yourself of clutter, and surround yourself with the things that truly matter. Without the upkeep of a traditional home, time spent with family can be enjoyed as quality time, instead of relying on them to help with gardening or maintenance on the house.

Millinery fashion IS ON THE RISE AGAIN — SAMUEL RODWELL—

“Everybody needs a hat for a special occasion”

range City Life had the chance to speak with local business owner Julie Herbert about her speciality trade in millinery, the craft of hat-making, talking all about where it began for her in the business and the complications of the trade.

“I started doing millinery in 2014, learning the trade, skills and techniques by experts at a millinery convention in Wagga Wagga and ever since then I have been hooked,” Julie said passionately.

“Had a week-worth of learning and after that I could make headpieces and hats

entirely from scratch. I also did millinery at TAFE in Parkes for 12-months and online courses furthering my skill in the trade.”

After moving to the country in the early 2010s from the city and getting married, Julie settled down in Orange where her passion for millinery flourished even more deeply.

“Millinery is such a well-known, old trade with an history where everyone used to wear these styles of hats. I’m a member of the Millinery Association of Australia and have connection so many other milliners who are so passionate about keeping the

trade alive because it is so special as a craft – we don’t want it to die out,” she says.

“But I think millinery will always be a trend with the current and future generations.

Everybody needs a hat for a special occasion. Straw hats are popular, people love wearing in spring and during summer.

I’ve been making fedoras, veils for weddings and the Melbourne Cup which brings out the fascinator in us all,” Julie says.

“It’s not manufactured like big companies would do; it’s all done by the milliners hands. It’s a very personal craft. Most of my orders are custom, so the customers are part of the journey in designing and making their hats by sharing their ideas. I usually do stretches of my ideas for them based on their preferences for materials, size and all those things to give them options. It’s nice to have them involved.”

When it comes to physically making the hats, Julie explains, “It usually takes

For instance, making the trims, abstracts and flower pieces it can take up to a day for me to make because materials need to be dried, you have to wire them, and the leather flowers are made from scratch completely. It’s a very hands-on trade but very rewarding.”

With everything opened up now, Julie expresses her excitement, “It’s so lovely to be opened up and to be able to get out and about wearing spring hats again.”

“The Spring Carnival is coming up in November, so people have the opportunity to have a drink and celebrate.

But also enjoying the outdoors, seeing family, seeing friends and looking forward to summer because everyone seems to be wearing millinery-style hats more over Christmas, New Years and that’s great,” she says excitingly.

MASSIVE FLOOR 55 years and counting This year marks the 55th year for the Bobeldyk family serving Orange and surrounding districts. Their story is a grand one!

In 1951 John and Henny Bobeldyk, with their young sons Willem and Bastiaan, arrived in Australia from Holland. Like so many others, upon their arrival in Sydney, they were then taken to the migrant camp at Bathurst. Later that same year, they began working at Mr Harold Hawke’s orchard on Canobolas Road.

In 1955 they bought the bakery at Spring Hill, and later expanded to also have a bakery at Millthorpe, as well as the mail run around the Forest Reefs, Tallwood and Spring Terrace areas.

It was during their time in Spring Hill that siblings for Willem and Bastiaan, Arthur and Hennie were both born. John and Henny sold the bakery in Spring Hill in 1964 and moved “into town”. Shortly after moving to Orange, eldest son Willem was tragically killed in a car accident near Wallerawang. At the time, John was working for Smeaton and Campbell Bakery.

In November 1966, John and Henny bought the Orange Disposal Store from Frank, Louise and Monica Smolle. The business was located on the corner of Anson and Byng Streets, opposite the old Town Hall.

In 1973, the business moved to a temporary

site in the old OPR building, on the corner of Kite and Lords Place, while they were having their new premises built at 113 Byng Street.

They moved into their new building in May 1975. The premises had a very distinctive round window and they used the slogan “The shop with the round window” to advertise the business, very successfully it must be said!

In 1977 Bastiaan and his wife Dell joined the business. The following year, Arthur started his furniture career, and in 1984 married Lynda, who joined the now burgeoning business.

October of 2000 saw the new furniture section of the business move into the present location at 70 Endsleigh, Ave. They became part of the Furniture One Buying Group in 2001. This greatly strengthened the business by giving access to a larger number of manufacturers, and this allowed the business to grow.

The very first La-Z-Boy Gallery in NSW was opened at Orange Furniture One in April 2005, and this greatly expanded the range of La-Z-Boy products; products that have become synonymous with comfort and style. 2007 saw Bastiaan and Dell retire from the business and Hennie and Graham

joining the business.

The Stressless Comfort Gallery was added to the store in August 2011. Stressless recliners are designed, developed and carefully manufactured in Norway.

Over the past 55 years the Bobeldyk’s have seen many changes in styles, products, manufacturers and transport; Arthur still remembers unloading furniture trucks with roof loads - a common sight in the 80’s.

It is over those 55 years that the Bobeldyks have developed their very keen eye for high quality furniture, which they stock on their floor and that is available to everyone.

Currently, the business is owned and operated by Arthur and Lynda Bobeldyk, Hennie and Graham Kempton, and ably assisted by Joanne Steuart.

Henny Bobeldyk passed away in 2019 at 100 years old, while John passed away in 2001.

The Bobeldyk family name has endured 55 successful years in business, and their incredible story is due to both a strong family commitment, as well as solid support from the local community.

“Shedders” expanding horizons with imminent Lucknow return

Men’s Sheds are often associated with old blokes making garden seats with a bit of wood-lathing and metal-working thrown in.

He says though, that the metalworking shed at the rear of the historic War Memorial hall is the likely starting point for new activities.

Looking to return to their long-time base at Lucknow School of Arts, Orange Men’s Shed though are expanding their horizons.

“We’ve got to look at a bigger space... one thing we would possibly look at, is down the back area where we have the metalworking shed where we have basically a four-car garage

“We’ve been mainly woodwork and metalwork, but now we want to increase what we offer,” President Alan Campbell explained.

“IT (computers), that sort of stuff is what we’ll be looking at further down the track, it’s whatever people want to do. We’re only limited by what individuals want to be involved in.

“We’ve also got guys who want to do things like upholstery, which we only do a little bit of at the moment,” he added.

Their imminent return to the near finallyrestored spiritual home at Lucknow could be the catalyst for their newly-expanded focus, Alan said.

“Yes, at this stage, we are in the process of organising a meeting with Council to see what’s going on, but it looks fairly well fitted out, it looks like most of it is done,” he said.

“We’ll have to talk it over with Council, though they seem encouraging.”

The local Men’s Shed – part of a unique Australia-wide initiative involving woodworking and carpentry to help the well-being and mental health of older males – had to move following a 2019 fire that almost destroyed their village hall.

They are still operating at a former ward of Bloomfield Hospital in south Orange whose availability probably saved the local group from closing.

“We were very fortunate to get it out at Bloomfield, otherwise we would all have been struggling,”, Alan said.

“We’re basically to do with the mental and physical wellbeing of men and we’re open to any age over 18.

“Although we’re predominantly retired gents, we’re open to everybody and anybody. If you’ve got any suggestions, and the space is there, we’ll have a look,” he said.

“We’ve dropped about a third of our members, we had about 75 and now we’re down to about 50.”

He added though, that you don’t need to be a master craftsmen to join the group.

Alan believes also that social changes since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic has had an impact on groups like the Men’s Shed.

“The majority of our member probably come out as much for a cup of tea and a chat as to do crafts. Before lockdown we often had trips away as well to places like Lighting Ridge, Sydney and Canberra,” Alan said.

He said that the arson attack, the forced move, and the 18-month pandemic has, however, been revealing: “It has certainly shown the resilience in the group. Like anything, you face adversity, and come out the other side a better person.”

There has also been a doubling in the household visitor cap from five visitors to ten (not counting children under 12), and the cap on outdoor gatherings has increased to 30 people. The cap on people attending weddings and funerals has changed from 50 people to 100 people. All these changes continue to only apply to fully vaccinated people.

Jesse Keagan talks about getting back into our fitness routines and squash “People are happier to be out and about – it makes you feel better.”

— SAMUEL RODWELL — With spring now in full-swing and restrictions opening up, many Orange residents are returning to their exercise and gym routines.

Fitness Perfection’s Jesse Keagan saying, “Routine is massive for everyone, people are getting back into the groove of things.

Everyone’s just happy to be out of lockdown and embracing to see each other again and getting back to their old routines.

The social aspect is returning strongly and with the warmer weather coming and daylight savings starting, it’s a happier vibe which is great to see,” Jesse says.

After weeks of lockdown forcing gyms to only continue through by running outdoor sessions that could only facilitate certain numbers of attendees.

Now with everything back open again, the “more freedom and space” for gymgoers to exercise indoors and have access to the diverse range of gym equipment, personal training from PT’s like Jesse and enjoying the facilities they’ve been craving to utilise for weeks – now the wait is finally over.

Pleased to see his client’s familiar faces returning from their lockdown slumber, Jesse says, “You become quite close with your clients, you become friends and it’s been great to see them again.”

Prying further into the subject of Jesse’s squash background, he generously replied with the following story:

“I was doing golf while in lockdown, it was a lot of golf,” he says happily.

“I had played professionally since I was 5 and travelled the world with squash, playing for Australia in the junior titles. I played tournaments in Malaysia, Singapore, played at 2015 Commonwealth Games in Samoa and pretty much all-around Australia. The last professional game I played was when I was 19 or 20. It’s always been in my family, I’ve always played it.”

“Now, I’m trying to get in five days a week back in the gym, lately it’s been about four.

Doing a mixture of everything, weights, cardio but more functional training which is more movement based,” Jesse explains.

When asked whether he’ll pick up the sport again professionally, Jesse explains, “The hardest thing is if I were to go for it again, I’ll have to move away overseas which isn’t a bad thing.

Quickly, the conversation changes when Jesse alludes to his time as a professional squash player.

“I had that opportunity when I was younger at 18 and I was still figuring out what I wanted to do. Family is a big thing for me, and to go away from them for more than a year overseas in America or Europe was big decision back then. I decided to not commit at the time. But I still have a hit, here and there, but it’s more of a casual thing now,” Jesse says.

Jesse’s own gym routine, being “a bit hit and miss lately” he admits, with work keeping him busy and coming out of lockdown where he was playing predominately golf.

“I’m an ex-squash player actually, I used to that professionally, which kept me fit. Anything to do with keeping me moving and going. Keeping my strength up is what I like personally. Golf is more for fun,” he says.

Previously, we learnt about Elizabeth’s time in the army from which her experiences led her on a path towards a profession in rural health care.

When did you decide to pursue medicine?

After completing my arts degree, I deployed to Darwin with the army and the person who was in charge of our deployment was a nurse in Orange. We spoke about what I could do following the deployment, as working in the performing arts industry isn’t always viability. That’s when I decided to pursue nursing. It was through nursing when I decided to pursue medicine.

I did a two-year post-graduate nursing course, and now I’m nearly one year into a five-year degree.

How does studying Medicine compared to your previous degrees?

It’s a marathon [Elizabeth laughs]. It’s been really different from anything I’ve done before and really challenging. Coming from a place where I had a lot of extracurriculars from my studies, work and playing music, now to come out here and not be able to do those activities due to the pandemic and the study workload of medicine. It has been quite challenging, so I’ve had to forgo a lot of my personal interests to focus on medicine, which you have to do in some capacity. I understood at the beginning there is a bit of sacrifice that comes with taking on this amount of study. But it’s been really rewarding as there’s one month left to go until exams and we’re in that final grind phrase of our first year. We can see the light at the end of tunnel.

No doubt, there’s been long nights and weekends on top of the weekday studying?

I feel like I live in this building at the moment [Bloomfield Medical Centre, in the CSU School of Medicine], I would arrive at 7am and leave at 5pm, sometimes doing more work when we get home, so it’s a full-time study-lifestyle. But the great thing about the school of rural medicine is that we have a small, really supportive cohort of 40 students with rural and regional backgrounds. You make a lot of friends really quickly. I didn’t have that in Sydney, I went to the University of Sydney for my nursing degree, it was such a large cohort and people don’t really know or care who you are [Elizabeth laughs]. There’s been such great support from the staff and students here, where we’re just all trying to get through our study workload together. Most of our academic staff are local doctors and general practitioners, so we have leaders and mentors who are actively working in practice which is very beneficial for us and they’ve welcomed us with opened arms.

You’ve recently moved here for your studies in February, how have you been finding Orange over the last eight months?

It’s really funny, since I’ve passed through so many times, heading to see family further out west while growing up. Never in my life I thought I would be out here studying

medicine. I’ve always loved Orange and I have friends from the army here which is really good. It’s really different from the city, you go to a local café and the baristas know your name, coffee order. My friend Sophie, who’s a social worker in town, we like to go to the Mad Hatter Café after yoga, we’ll go and get our coffee, bacon and egg roll at six in the morning. It’s become a morning ritual before our exams. I really loved all the local cafes and restaurants; they’ve been a highlight with moving here for sure. You see people around town that you recognise and it’s a lot more welcoming than in the city, I never had that while living in Sydney. It’s

nice to build a sense of community here.

Have you had the chance to try our local food and wine venues yet?

I have sadly not had the chance to explore the wineries, but I am very excited to experience them when exams are finished shortly. I really like the pub scene in Orange if it’s appropriate for me to say that [Elizabeth laughs]. The Parkview, all the med students, we’ve made a joke that they should sponsor us because in the first week we were there every night, having a meal and drinks. They haven’t kicked us out yet [Elizabeth jokingly laughs].

I’d like to thank every member of our community for doing the right thing to help get us to this point: following health orders, getting tested, wearing masks and rolling up our sleeves for vaccination. NET ZERO UPDATE The Australian Government will settle its position on net zero in the next couple of weeks. I believe the National Party and the Government need to be constructively and positively engaged on the issue and approach the discussion in good faith to see where we can land. Sticking your fingers in your ears and refusing to have the conversation is not the way to go.

I think there are opportunities here for country Australia that we should have a good look at, and I like the idea of technology getting us there rather than taxes.

DIXON’S LONG POINT CROSSING With lockdowns lifting, last week I was out at Dixon’s Long Point between Orange and Mudgee. COVID-19 has definitely slowed this project (and many others) down, but things are on the move again.

One issue that I am determined to get right is cultural heritage.

Representatives from local Indigenous groups had previously raised some concerns with respect to some sections of the proposed route. We then came up with a revised route which we had surveyed and pegged out.

Last Friday we all walked the new route and while there are still some formalities to go, there was consensus that the new route is much better.

It may cost a little bit more but it’s not that much in the greater scheme of things and well worth it to help protect cultural heritage.

I would like to thank the representatives from Wellington Valley Wiradjuri Aboriginal Corporation, the Murong Gialinga Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation and also the Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council for their very positive engagement and for teaching me so much about the Indigenous history of the area.

Sue’s images reveal the beauty she sights in life — DAVID DIXON —

Sue Gore sees beauty everywhere.

R

egular “Orange City Life” photo contributor, her range of topical and technically-perfect images from our beautiful country and local wildlife, has delighted readers for years.

Sue exemplifies the wonderful photographers, columnists, short story writers, and club contributors who add so much variety, flair, and alternative voices to our publication.

Her amazing photos, that often feature in “Around the Region” are the product of her wonderful eye for an image with no formal training for this inveterate shutterbug.

“I don’t class myself as a photographer, I do it as a hobby. I’ve got a camera on the table at home and one in the car and, if I see something I like, I just take it,” she explained.

Sue found a love of photography from an early age guessing that her first images were: “probably just taking family pics or whatever.”

“I do it for rest and relaxation, I can’t help myself, even here at work (at Orange City Bowling Club) we

started ‘Twilight Bowls’ back last night, and I took some pics and posted them on our website,” Sue said.

“There’s something nice to see every day; life has such beautiful things, why wouldn’t you want to photograph it?” she asked.

Fifteen minutes out of Orange on the Ophir Road and surrounded by the Mullions Range National Park, her natural surroundings provide the theme and location for much of her favourite works.

“There’s always something to see beautiful every day, birds, kangaroos, other animals, I’ve taken reflections of the light in the dam, anything that takes my fancy,” Sue said.

“I come from a farming background, so it’s natural in that sense that I would have a love of the land.”

Sue’s first contribution to “Orange City Life” was entering our old “Photo of the Week” competition which offered a small monetary prize each week for the best pic.

“I used to enter that and win quite often and, when they got rid of it, I stopped sending pics in,” Sue explained.

“But people started saying ‘we don’t see your photos anymore,’ and I said, ‘don’t think they’re doing it anymore,’ so then I just started sending them in again,” she said.

Sue has developed a loyal online following of friends, family, and casual acquaintances who she enlightens and entertains with her pictures.

“They sometimes say at the club ‘Sue’s got the day off’, because I take photos morning, noon, and night,” she laughs.

“I put it on my Facebook page for my friends to brighten their day and I say, ‘I hope you all have a good day’,’ she added.

Her photography, she says reflects her positive outgoing view of life.

“It’s nice to have a positive thought, life’s too short to be grumpy…. To see the beautiful things in life — to see people smile for the day, it’s good,” she said.

Bar manager at the Club, she takes her outgoing easy manners with her in her working life also.

“I say, I do my job, have a laugh, and go home,” she added.

“If I had to follow religion, it would be Buddhism, you treat everyone the same,” she said.

Like all of us, she’s looking forward to the end of the two-years of stop-start lockdowns that have impacted all of us since February 2020.

“We’ve only just come back, I’ll be glad COVID’s over and we can get back to our lives,” she added.

“I never did one course in photography, but the lady bowlers here say, ‘you just capture the right moment.’ I just take my pics for the fun of it and, if someone comments, I think that’s nice,” Sue said.

Selling few of her works, she mostly views her hobby as a labour-of-love, she added.

Out of the thousands of images she has collected, Sue can’t easily pick her favourite-ever photo. “I haven’t got one, my hubby keeps asking me, but I say, ‘all pictures are nice’,” Sue concluded.

ANDREW’S CRAFT IS A COAT OF NEW PAINT Lick of new paint immeasurably lifts the whole ambience and tone of almost any home or flat.

That’s why Andrew Abbott, one of Orange’s premier painters, love his job, and it’s also why he is so flat-out!

“I’ve been a painter for about 15-years and run my own business for eight, I’m that busy at the moment, people can’t go on holidays, can’t go overseas, they’re stuck in their home and they’re deciding to do something about it,” Andrew said.

With most of his work involving repainting established residential, and some commercial properties, getting the job done right is his first priority.

“I specialise in repaints of interiors and exteriors, extensions, and heritage work and, for that reason, I don’t do many new homes where it is often just ‘spray-on and move-on’,” he said.

He is also one of the few Dulux-accredited painters in town and exclusively uses their brand for all his paints. “I’ve always used Dulux paints, there’s so much testing and science behind it, I believe it’s the best on the market,” he said.

“There are only a few of us in town, and I believe that only about two-and-a-half per cent of all painters in Australia, are accredited,” he explained.

“They check your work, that you’re not cutting corners and are using the right systems. I was lucky, I was taught the right way, and, with painting, you get what you pay for,” Andrew said.

“Definitely, we’ve had a few times where we’ve started on a place and the owners have

“People like contrasts… I always recommend they use test pots and mix-and-match the different colours to see that they all gotogether,” he said.

“A lot of old places are dark-coloured inside, and we can lift them with lighter colours which are more popular now.”

Andrew fell into being a house-painter by chance, but now loves the work.

“I first started out of school, I went to Orange High, and I just wanted an apprenticeship, anything really, but now I get quite a lot of satisfaction from my job,” Andrew said.

“It’s the pleasure of looking at an old rundown house and seeing it brought back to life, that is really rewarding,” he said.

As painters are often the last tradies to work on a new or renovated property, he said though that they often get left picking-up the pieces of other people’s work.

“If someone stuffs up or hits a wall, doesn’t finish the gyprocking or plastering properly, they always say, ‘don’t, worry, the painters will fix-it’,” Andrew laughs.

HistoryTALKING with HELEN McANULTY In this time of the Covid pandemic we also have been hit by other happenings like fire and flood and a mouse plague as well.

It is interesting to contemplate the Oral History’s memories of the past horrors that nature has thrown at us.

Dust storms seem to have played a large part in the climatic history of Australia since the beginning of the 20th century and possibly even before.

The summer of 1944/45 was especially noteworthy, as years of drought had dried out the inland.

On Monday, 16th October, 1944, “dust enshrouded outback towns, thick enough for lights to be turned on in the morning”.

Further storms followed at 5 day intervals, continuing into the New Year.

It was enough to raise, in a war weary country, the thought that preventative measures had to be taken. This month when confronted with this impersonal definition, but it doesn’t tell you how it RE-ALLY is.

And the group went on to tell me what it felt like to actually experience that particular occurrence.

“A dust storm was always preceded by a long drought and heavy winds,” Russel told us.

“They were very prevalent out west in the 1940s.

At about 2.30, the sky would be like midnight and although we blocked the windows, the dust still seeped in, and after it left, it all had to be cleaned up.

Mum finally decided to leave it all until next time.

DUST AND SNOW STORMS “We had a bad dust storm at Cargo when I was a child,” Barbara . “ We lived in a very old house with a hessian ceiling. The dirt got too heavy for it and the hessian collapsed and dumped years and years of dust right on to our heads. The house was thick with red dust.”

Joan had grown up in the city and was unused to such calamities.

“We had just bought a property near Grenfell in 1982 and were in the middle of a drought. My husband was recovering from surgery and was not very well. I looked out the window and saw something big and brown bowling in from the west and had no idea what it was until it arrived and covered everything in dirt.”

Elma was well used to dust at Narromine, as was Jan, who was a small child living between Broken Hill and Menindee, when she experienced her first dust storm.

“I remember the dust stinging on my legs and the imprint of my head on the pillow when I woke up.”

Margaret , who grew up in Gulargambone, and whose father ran the general store, has memories of the dust storms in the 1920s and 30s.

“I loved the dusty smell as it rolled in.

“At Condobolin the dust storms were terrifying ,” said Lesley.

You could see it coming across the cemetery about a mile away and we would run to close up the four front glass doors of the shop,” she said.

“It would get very quiet and still and the sky looked as if the end of the world was coming and then--whoosh, red dust everywhere!”

“One Christmas Eve we came upstairs and we wrote ‘Happy Christmas’ in the thick dust on the dining room table. I can still see the

200 people on board eventually were rescued by buses.”

The points in the Orange rail yard often froze under the snow and had to be melted using hot water from the engine.

Snow, of course, is quite a different experience.

There were problems too with train wheels slipping on the rails in icy conditions, especially in the high country and a sanding device was fitted to the engine to counteract this

On July 5th July, 1900, it was reported that “around 90cm of snow fell in the Blue Mountains and the Tablelands, with chaos resulting, railway traffic paralysed, passengers shut in carriages and telegraph wires down everywhere.”

The group agreed that, although it looked delightful, snow brought with it a few headaches, especially in the days before electric blankets, and when heating can be delivered with the flick of a switch.

The years 1959, ‘60, ‘62 were very cold with snow, but on July, 17th and 18th 1965, one of “the heaviest and most widespread snowfalls on record fell across the Central Tablelands.”

These falls seemed to continue right up until the turn of the century and perhaps are in direct correlation with the increase in population and growing use of cars, air conditioning and fuel.

As usual, the Oral History group was willing to share its memories of snow.

“There was a big fall of snow in the 1960s,” said Jeff.

“There must have been 6 or 7 inches and, because it was so still, the snow lay heavily on the power lines and brought a lot down.”

This caused quite a bit of chaos and Post Office technicians were required to work in freezing and often dangerous conditions repairing the lines.

“In the big snowfall of 1966,” said Tom, “The Bourke mail train, which used to leave Dubbo at 8 pm, was stuck in particularly heavy snow at Eucharina and could go no further. The

He has experience in arrangements for dealing with plagues, floods and fodder drops to starving stock.

“I was also involved with preparations for natural disasters and how we should respond as individuals,” he said. “I’m not sure if the frequency of disasters has changed but I think the severity has because of the increase in population. We’ve only had about 150 years of weather recording which is an infinitesimal amount, so we really don’t know what is normal.”

This was a rare discussion which did not end with a longing for ‘the old days’.

We feel fortunate that some of those remembered experiences are well and truly in the past.

Made hay while the sun did shine Sign of our bountiful times, dozens of seemingly-abandoned round hay-bales created over the past two high-rainfall years to take advantage of our runaway pasture growth.

Ending of the three-year drought in January last year, saw an explosion of haymaking but with the newly-rolled bales often left out in paddocks due to storage shortfalls with nowhere to shed them. In a dry spell, each bale would fetch perhaps $300 to feed-stretched farmers.

ORANGE PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP “Good location and unlimited potential”

Works continue apace on Orange’s Southern Feeder Road development designed to create, along with the Northern Distributor, a ringroad bypass for passing traffic so as to avoid Orange’s urban and CBD areas.

Work on the almost completed $7.5 million two-kilometre-long Stage 3 project began in November last year when the project upgraded the line of Dairy Creek Road and Blowes Road from Elsham Avenue to the Mitchell Highway.

We have a speaker organized who has an ambitus quest to tell members about.

Opened in January 1992, the old DPI building on Bathurst Road was once a hive of government activity with up to 400 public servants housed there for the-then Department of Agriculture and Rural Assistance Authority.

During lockdowns some Prostate suffers in New South Wales and Victoria have had their treatments postponed due to travel restrictions. As we have most facilities for treatment in Orange there have been little delays but not major disruptions.

Rumoured to have been designed as a high-end shopping mall when the Department of Primary Industries finally moved-out, it is now for sale with shopping centres not quite the investment opportunity that they may have appeared in 1991.

As always, our meetings are open to interested members of the public, newly diagnosed men an carers and men who have survived Prostate Cancer who can pass their experiences and knowledge to those who are having problems.

In good news though, part of the building is reputedly being fitted-out for another government authority to lease on a long-term basis.

Southern feeder works continue

After a long lockdown the Prostate group will be holding a long-awaited Spring Meeting on Tuesday the 19th of October 2021 at Café Connect 107 Prince Street Orange at 6-00 pm.

Letting locals know what’s going-on Times before newspapers, radio, television, and the internet, communities in Europe used to employ town-criers to hourly yell out the time and that “all’s well” (if it was) with the local populace.

Quaint village of Spring Hill has revived that tradition of sorts with a couple of noticeboards lettings locals know what’s going on in their picturesque locale that is located south-east of Orange on the main western rail line.

One of the noticeboards recently was welcoming two new residents and the other promoting the village’s camping ground facility at the Spring Hill recreation ground.

Daybreak Rotary funds assisting Aboriginal Men’s health group Assisting a local indigenous group to help connect its members to “country and culture” is the aim of a recent donation made by Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak.

Daybreak Rotary donated the $4000 to the Yarruwala Ngulubul Men’s Group to organise camps by purchasing equipment such as swags, camp ovens, and tools which will assist the men to connect with country and to practice their culture.

The donation came from the $24,000 raised by the Daybreak Rotary Club’s “Orange’s Biggest Garage Sale” event.

“From an indigenous perspective, these funds will allow the group to run sessions with specialist speakers on various topics such as alcohol and drug abuse as well as diet which have a direct effect on mental health,” Men’s Group spokesman Chris Jones said.

Chris commented that the Men’s Health Group had discussed best-practice to

utilise the funds adding: “thank you to the amazing people of Orange who attended Orange’s Biggest Garage Sale, and who have blessed us with this support.

“We are truly grateful,” he said, adding that the group looks forward to working together again and building relationships with the local service club.

Mental health initiatives are the focus of the local Rotary group in the months ahead culminating in the “Lift the Lid” on Mental Health campaign at the November Farmers Market where patrons, stallholders, and Rotarians will be asked to wear a funny hat to show their support.

So, how high are our rates; really?

There is a widely-held view that Orange’s Council rates are the highest in Australia.

There is information on the “Your Council” website at “Compare Councils – Your Council NSW” that makes some comparisons possible.

This shows that Orange’s average Residential Rate in 2019/20 was 28 per cent higher than the equivalent for Bathurst region and 21 per cent higher than the average for the group of councils that includes Orange, Lithgow, Bathurst, Dubbo, Cessnock, Wagga Wagga and Albury. However, Orange’s average residential rate is seven per cent lower than Lithgow’s.

The average business rate for Orange is 44 per cent higher than Bathurst and 60 per cent higher than the average for the group.

Orange’s average farmland rate is 28 per cent higher than Bathurst’s but 23 per cent lower than the average for the group.

are paid for by other levels of government. If people are asked what services they would like to cut, they often find it very difficult to answer.

On face value, it seems odd that Orange’s average rates are so much higher than Bathurst region which is a much larger local government area. It is actually very difficult to compare like-with-like because of the different types of rates and charges that councils bill property owners for.

If I am elected as Mayor of Orange, I will ask for a detailed report that makes meaningful comparisons of rates, charges, and the cost of Council services. I will also want to see as many service reviews as possible undertaken in the next short Council term to see whether savings can be made.

If it is not true that Orange’s rates are the highest in Australia, let’s stop that negative talk once and for all.

Proving commitment for the long haul on Council An interesting week in state politics results in three by-elections coming up.

I am curious if this will affect whatever restrictions are in place for Council elections in regards to campaigning and how people can vote. I guess we will see!

Musing about council elections and the ‘Open Forum’ has made me think of the time commitment required for Council and if I could commit that time as a doctor and father of young children.

I thought I should share that I have been thinking about Council and my potential suitability since 2019. Since then, I have had meetings with five current or recent councillors as well Orange Council’s CEO to get their opinion on how (if elected) I could be good in the role and the sort of time I should expect to spend.

I was grateful for their time. Words are easy, action is harder, but I believe I can put in the commitment required.

Any long-term readers of the ‘Council Game’ and ‘Open Forum’ may note that I have not missed a week in terms of contributing something. Only a little thing, but potentially a small demonstration that I can commit and be reliable to the task.

Additionally, I was given plenty of advice regarding the need to listen broadly and seek out a variety of opinions and ideas.

Resizing as a way of cheating consumers There are many examples of situations where individuals or companies make the basic assumption that people are stupid.

They will do something or say something, assuming that nobody will notice that something has changed.

I find this quite irritating.

Examples include, companies who change pack sizes – to a smaller quantity or smaller size but with the same price.

Tissues are a classic example of this. It wasn’t too many years ago that boxes of tissues contained 224 tissues (or more). Now, they might contain 95 tissues, but the box is still the same size so it’s not so obvious.

After the fascinating relationship we’ve had with toilet paper purchases over the past 18 months, has anyone noticed that Kleenex Cottonelle rolls now have 170 sheets per roll instead of the pre-pandemic 180?

When I was a child, toilet rolls came in packets of two or four and there were 500 sheets per roll. It’s gradually been whittled down, but rolled on more loosely so we can’t easily notice.

Then they produce a ‘double length’ version, proclaiming it as better value. Hmmm.

I was advised to not be a ‘single issue’ candidate, but be prepared to put effort into many issues, especially ones that are not front and centre for me personally.

The same thing happens with the food purchases that we make.

Sizes reduce – the number of sheets of filo pastry in a packet, the size of a tin of condensed milk, the weight of a block of chocolate.

Sometimes it matters as we may be using a recipe that was based on the previous-sized packet and therefore might need to buy two of something where we previously only needed one.

Smaller blocks of chocolate are probably not so bad, but it’s done this way instead of increasing the price, so it’s still annoying.

In my experience, most people are not stupid. They do notice things and, while they’re not necessarily in a position to do anything about it, they do find it irritating.

It shows Chrissie Plowman with a horse drawing a single furrow plough as the trees behind them show their full spring blossom.

The Plowman family were well-known orchardists and it is thanks to avid amateur photographer Jim Plowman that there is a wonderful collection of family photos on glass-plate negatives, including many taken on their orchard.
