ANDREW’S CRAFT IS A COAT OF NEW PAINT Lick of new paint immeasurably lifts the whole ambience and tone of almost any home or flat.

That’s why Andrew Abbott, one of Orange’s premier painters, love his job, and it’s also why he is so flat-out!

“I’ve been a painter for about 15-years and run my own business for eight, I’m that busy at the moment, people can’t go on holidays, can’t go overseas, they’re stuck in their home and they’re deciding to do something about it,” Andrew said.

With most of his work involving repainting established residential, and some commercial properties, getting the job done right is his first priority.

“I specialise in repaints of interiors and exteriors, extensions, and heritage work and, for that reason, I don’t do many new homes where it is often just ‘spray-on and move-on’,” he said.

He is also one of the few Dulux-accredited painters in town and exclusively uses their brand for all his paints. “I’ve always used Dulux paints, there’s so much testing and science behind it, I believe it’s the best on the market,” he said.

“There are only a few of us in town, and I believe that only about two-and-a-half per cent of all painters in Australia, are accredited,” he explained.

“They check your work, that you’re not cutting corners and are using the right systems. I was lucky, I was taught the right way, and, with painting, you get what you pay for,” Andrew said.

“Definitely, we’ve had a few times where we’ve started on a place and the owners have

“People like contrasts… I always recommend they use test pots and mix-and-match the different colours to see that they all gotogether,” he said.

“A lot of old places are dark-coloured inside, and we can lift them with lighter colours which are more popular now.”

Andrew fell into being a house-painter by chance, but now loves the work.

“I first started out of school, I went to Orange High, and I just wanted an apprenticeship, anything really, but now I get quite a lot of satisfaction from my job,” Andrew said.

“It’s the pleasure of looking at an old rundown house and seeing it brought back to life, that is really rewarding,” he said.

As painters are often the last tradies to work on a new or renovated property, he said though that they often get left picking-up the pieces of other people’s work.

“If someone stuffs up or hits a wall, doesn’t finish the gyprocking or plastering properly, they always say, ‘don’t, worry, the painters will fix-it’,” Andrew laughs.

HistoryTALKING with HELEN McANULTY In this time of the Covid pandemic we also have been hit by other happenings like fire and flood and a mouse plague as well.

It is interesting to contemplate the Oral History’s memories of the past horrors that nature has thrown at us.

Dust storms seem to have played a large part in the climatic history of Australia since the beginning of the 20th century and possibly even before.

The summer of 1944/45 was especially noteworthy, as years of drought had dried out the inland.

On Monday, 16th October, 1944, “dust enshrouded outback towns, thick enough for lights to be turned on in the morning”.

Further storms followed at 5 day intervals, continuing into the New Year.

It was enough to raise, in a war weary country, the thought that preventative measures had to be taken. This month when confronted with this impersonal definition, but it doesn’t tell you how it RE-ALLY is.

And the group went on to tell me what it felt like to actually experience that particular occurrence.

“A dust storm was always preceded by a long drought and heavy winds,” Russel told us.

“They were very prevalent out west in the 1940s.

At about 2.30, the sky would be like midnight and although we blocked the windows, the dust still seeped in, and after it left, it all had to be cleaned up.

Mum finally decided to leave it all until next time.

DUST AND SNOW STORMS “We had a bad dust storm at Cargo when I was a child,” Barbara . “ We lived in a very old house with a hessian ceiling. The dirt got too heavy for it and the hessian collapsed and dumped years and years of dust right on to our heads. The house was thick with red dust.”

Joan had grown up in the city and was unused to such calamities.

“We had just bought a property near Grenfell in 1982 and were in the middle of a drought. My husband was recovering from surgery and was not very well. I looked out the window and saw something big and brown bowling in from the west and had no idea what it was until it arrived and covered everything in dirt.”

Elma was well used to dust at Narromine, as was Jan, who was a small child living between Broken Hill and Menindee, when she experienced her first dust storm.

“I remember the dust stinging on my legs and the imprint of my head on the pillow when I woke up.”

Margaret , who grew up in Gulargambone, and whose father ran the general store, has memories of the dust storms in the 1920s and 30s.

“I loved the dusty smell as it rolled in.

“At Condobolin the dust storms were terrifying ,” said Lesley.

You could see it coming across the cemetery about a mile away and we would run to close up the four front glass doors of the shop,” she said.

“It would get very quiet and still and the sky looked as if the end of the world was coming and then--whoosh, red dust everywhere!”

“One Christmas Eve we came upstairs and we wrote ‘Happy Christmas’ in the thick dust on the dining room table. I can still see the

200 people on board eventually were rescued by buses.”

The points in the Orange rail yard often froze under the snow and had to be melted using hot water from the engine.

Snow, of course, is quite a different experience.

There were problems too with train wheels slipping on the rails in icy conditions, especially in the high country and a sanding device was fitted to the engine to counteract this

On July 5th July, 1900, it was reported that “around 90cm of snow fell in the Blue Mountains and the Tablelands, with chaos resulting, railway traffic paralysed, passengers shut in carriages and telegraph wires down everywhere.”

The group agreed that, although it looked delightful, snow brought with it a few headaches, especially in the days before electric blankets, and when heating can be delivered with the flick of a switch.

The years 1959, ‘60, ‘62 were very cold with snow, but on July, 17th and 18th 1965, one of “the heaviest and most widespread snowfalls on record fell across the Central Tablelands.”

These falls seemed to continue right up until the turn of the century and perhaps are in direct correlation with the increase in population and growing use of cars, air conditioning and fuel.

As usual, the Oral History group was willing to share its memories of snow.

“There was a big fall of snow in the 1960s,” said Jeff.

“There must have been 6 or 7 inches and, because it was so still, the snow lay heavily on the power lines and brought a lot down.”

This caused quite a bit of chaos and Post Office technicians were required to work in freezing and often dangerous conditions repairing the lines.

“In the big snowfall of 1966,” said Tom, “The Bourke mail train, which used to leave Dubbo at 8 pm, was stuck in particularly heavy snow at Eucharina and could go no further. The

John is another member of our group with specialist knowledge of natural disasters, having been involved professionally with disaster relief in NSW, particularly in agricultural areas.

He has experience in arrangements for dealing with plagues, floods and fodder drops to starving stock.

“I was also involved with preparations for natural disasters and how we should respond as individuals,” he said. “I’m not sure if the frequency of disasters has changed but I think the severity has because of the increase in population. We’ve only had about 150 years of weather recording which is an infinitesimal amount, so we really don’t know what is normal.”

This was a rare discussion which did not end with a longing for ‘the old days’.

We feel fortunate that some of those remembered experiences are well and truly in the past.
