Orange Vinnies Van back up and running — SAMUEL RODWELL — The Orange Vinnies Van service will be back on the road the week beginning Monday, November 1.

Phil Donnan, Regional Director North West Region of St Vincent de Paul Society, said, “We are really pleased to announce the Vinnies Van service is back after the COVID shutdown.”

“So being able to announce the return is great news,” Mr Donnan said. At this stage Vinnies will only be recommencing the Van service as the Friday fortnightly Café lunch is not able to return due to a shortage of cooking and serving volunteers.

2021 has been a very difficult year, with the fortnightly Van service working intermittently due to COVID-19.

“We know the Vinnies Van is very much

“We are putting the call out for additional volunteers for the Vinnies Van and the Café service. We are looking for a Van coordinator and

cooks and servers to restart the Café lunch in 2022.

Serving a sit-down lunch gives people attending the social interaction and connection that is so important,” he said.

“I especially want to thank all the Vinnies Van volunteers who are coming back to assist those in the community who are struggling. Our volunteers are the backbone of Vinnies and we could not do it without them,” Mr Donnan said.

MARK’S A MASTER OF MANY AND A JACK-OF-ALL TRADES Home maintenance handyman Mark O’Donahue is as much a master of many as a jack-of-all-trades.

In fact, once he does one job for a homeowner, he often gets asked to complete a whole lot more.

“I’ve got three main trades; carpenter, plasterer, and tiler, and I’m going to get a ticket for painting as well,” he explained.

“I do a pretty good job, and once a person gets me in a house, they don’t want to let me out,” he laughs. “They say, ‘can you then do this, and then get onto that?’,” he explained.

“I’ve been working on a house in Park Lane that I’ve been in since abut the middle of May, people bought this house and wanted the whole lot renovated, and I’m still there,” he smiled.

His other work involves car detailing, fencing, yard clean-ups, and general

repairs and maintenance Because of the complex restorative nature of much of his work, clients are normally happy to see Mark on a piece-paid basis.

“I normally charge an hourly rate because with these old houses, you simply can’t put a fixed price on things, the work evolves as you start getting into it.

“I have a lot of return customers and I class them as friends,” he said.

He first found his inner-handyman in woodwork classes at school: “I thought, ‘I’ve got a bit of a talent for this’, I’m sort of a jack-of-all trades, anything to do with building, and I’m always learning new things,” he said.

Like man local tradies, he learned his craft in Sydney before finding the more-relaxed lifestyle west of the Mountains to his liking.

With an old-fashioned approach to customer service, reliability is another of his key qualities.

“I came from Winston Hills (northwest Sydney) and moved here in 2005, and I’m not going back.

“I enjoy helping people out and I turn up when I say, When I often turn-up to do quotes, people often say, ‘ohh, you turned-up,’ and I say, well I said I would, so I did,” Mark said.

“You start on a room and find that work needs doing on the boards or walls, and you have to go from there,” he explained.

“Just the fresh air and not the hustle and bustle of Sydney, country people are
