Principal of local firm, Independent Property Inspections, David has a self-confessed perfectionist’s eye-for-detail when it comes to assessing any home or business you are thinking of buying.

He’s also been a busy boy lately with the local housing boom and with travel restrictions meaning that many local properties are now being purchased without the new owners having visited Orange themselves.

“Most of my work is pre-purchase inspections for people who live in Sydney or elsewhere but that, due to the lockdowns and such, have trouble coming up themselves. I can be their eyes and ears on a property,” David explained.

“Many are properties they’ve seen online, and the want to get out of the cities, even from Queensland and other states, and they give me the details and address and I provide a fully-detailed report on the property,” he added.

David will then spend hours assessing all structural, aesthetic and functional aspects of the property before providing an extremely detailed report – it’s a service that represents real value for money for any potential purchaser.

“I have a carpentry background and used to do real estate inspections in Sydney, but these

are much more detailed than that.

“With standard real estate inspections, you’re typically in there an hour or two and usually complete a report of maybe two to three pages, that’s all,” he said.

“I take half a day and take 200-300 photos and my reports regularly run from 25-45 pages, I don’t miss anything,” David said proudly.

He had his wife Alina have run the familyowned business in the Colour City for four years after moving from Sydney and – due to their well-earned reputation for thoroughness – have rarely been busier.

He recalls a recently-completed building where the building contractor in South Australia, unable to personally inspect the work themselves, asked him to mark any issues with pink tape for the pictures.

“There was all this pink tape around and the on-site builder said, ‘Why all the pink tape?’ and I said, ‘The architect wants me to find these issues and that’s what he’s asked me to do and that’s what he’ll get.’

“I’m one of the most thorough in town, that’s what they pay me for, I’m a perfectionist,” David concluded.

Orange Running Festival is returning in 2022 to it’s full glory for runners and spectators — SAMUEL RODWELL —

“I’m very excited for what we have in store for next year’s running festival” Turn the clocks back to a pre-COVID world in early 2020, this is when the last full-program Orange Running Festival was facilitated and just in the nick of time too before lockdown began.

“We were very lucky to squeeze it in before the world changed,” said Anthony Daintith, organiser of Orange Running Festival.

“For 2021, we held the festival but in a revised format because of COVID. So there was only three races. But now for 2022, fingers crossed, we’ll be going back to the full festival program to how it was pre-COVID.”

On the Sunday, the usual events return, such as the marathon and the half-marathon.

As well, the 10km and 5km events will be included, along with the Schools and Business challenges for divisions, teams and runners to race it out to win prizes and bragging rights.

During the previous years, Anthony stated more than 50% of the runners who attend the festival are tourist athletes, which the festival touted to act as a tourism attraction for the Orange community.

“We’re hoping to regain that percentage of runners returning to Orange and since we have a great combination of restaurants, wineries and entertainment activities for people to enjoy while they’re up here for the festival. We might as well encourage them to stay for the weekend and make it a miniholiday essentially.”

Kinross new strip looks to both past and future

Referencing the past and looking to the future, Kinross Wolaroi School has had its first major uniform update since its establishment in the mid-1970s. he new outfit has been developed with the combined school’s half-century in mind, spokesperson, Jennifer Divall explained.

“In 2025, Kinross Wolaroi, as it now exists, will be 50 years young. As we’ve had the same uniform for 45 years, we thought it was time for a refresh and something a bit contemporary and fit-forpurpose, more gender-neutral and in modern fabrics,” she explained.

The new strip, however, also references the two schools from which Kinross was originally formed — the girls’ Kinross Presbyterian Ladies’ College, and the boys Wolaroi Methodist Boys College.

“We’re also acknowledging the history of the school, the old PLC heritage and Wolaroi heritage and colours… but in a more contemporary feel,” she added.

The changes include a more practical outfit for the junior school by moving-away from the blazer and tie look for boys and dresses for girls that has predominated for nearly half a century.

“We’ve moved to a more play-based uniform that is really comfortable and makes it easy for the students to dress themselves… it includes options for girls shorts and pants that are age and stage appropriate.”

Parents were consulted on the new uniform with a preference for the traditional blues and greens of the old Wolaroi and PLC schools coming-up trumps.

School Principal, Dr Andrew Parry, said the brief had been to create a practical, contemporary, and consistent look across all of the school’s uniforms from Pre-Kinder to Year 12, that would last for at least 20 years.

He said the perspectives of students, parents, staff, and ex-students, were considered as part of the review process with the project led by eminent Australian designer, Jonathan Ward.

The new uniform had been designed as a trans-seasonal “wardrobe” that could be adjusted for the weather or individual needs, offering students a range of choices that now included shorts and trousers for all students.

Dr Parry said the uniform would offer a range of new items for everyday wear, such as a puffer vest and duffle coat, while the “best-dressed” academic uniform would feature a fully-braided blazer for Years 3–10, and a self-striped blazer for Seniors in Years 11 and 12, each with matching ties and scarves.

In a nod to tradition, he said the school would continue to offer a kilt in French navy for Senior students.

Mr Ward was previously head-designer for RM Williams and has created uniforms for many iconic Australian businesses, as well as leading independent schools in Australia and overseas.

Dr Parry said a significant change was the move-away from formality to a play-based uniform for the youngest students in Pre-Kinder to Year Two, to accommodate their developmental needs as well as offer freedom of movement.

New equipment for automatic telephone exchange

How times have changed now that most people have mobile phones. This week’s photo shows senior technician Ned Carroll testing equipment at Orange’s new automatic telephone exchange in March 1956.

The new exchange had a capacity of 1000 lines, adding to the existing 2000 lines in the central battery exchange.

Every number in the city was changed and new directories sent out to subscribers.

Thirteen candidates for nine spots on

Cabonne Council Current Cabonne Mayor, Kevin Beatty, running in next month’s poll for r re-election to the Council.

Cabonne residents also go to the polls on Saturday, December 4 to elect a new Council.

Thirteen candidates have nominated for the local poll, including nine of the current Council from the previous term.

The rural-based Shire encircles Orange and is based at Molong north-west of the Colour City. It also includes the Central Tablelands towns and villages of Yeoval, Manildra, Cumnock, Canowindra, and Eugowra.

These include current Mayor Kevin Beatty who has held the post for the past four years. Cabonne does not have directelection of the mayor as with Orange with the councillors annually voting for the mayor for the next year.

Residents this election will be voting for a reduced Council of only nine councillors — down from the current 12 — after residents agreed at the last local government election in 2017 to reduce the councillor numbers by a quarter.

Mayor Kevin Beatty is a retired police officer who describes himself as an active member of the Molong Bowling Club who runs a small farm in the district.
