BRENTON STANDS TALL IN HANDYMAN STAKES Brenton Hoskins-Murphy stands 183cm – about six feet tall. Hence the name of his handyman venture, the “6ft Workshop”.

game, Brenton says that he “grew up on building sites” at a time when one learnt the skills as they went along.

“I was looking for a name for the business, and I’m six feet tall, so that’s where it comes from,” he explained.

“My dad was a builder and, before you had to have tickets and things, I started working on building sites when I was 14,” he explained.

From a trades and property management background, he is the perfect tradie for any construction and installation, maintenance and home services, and repair and remodelling jobs you want done.

“I walked away for a few years to run pubs and clubs, such as the Orient Hotel in Sydney, but the thing is, when you run pubs and they know you have the skills, you’re always doing repairs about the place,” he said.

“I do a lot of remodelling and repainting. I was recently working on a house built in Orange in the 1970s with one of those beautiful arches between the kitchen and the dining room in a dusky pink, I rebuilt and repainted it,” he said.

“My dad and I then went up to Coffs Harbour where we did cladding and roofing and windows,” he said.

“I make stuff as well – furniture, blinds, tables.

I hang wallpaper, minor construction, any handyman work,” he added.

With a family background in the building

He then travelled to England where he property managed and refurbished a number of hotels and restaurants before the call of family brought him to the Colour City.

“My wife’s a local girl and wanted to move home. I got a job at Housing Plus as property

manager, before becoming construction and quality manager for a project home builder,” he explained, The appeal of a simpler life then led to Brenton striking out on his own.

“You’re less time-constrained and there’s less of having to listen to eight people at once, I’d rather work directly with clients,” he said.

This work, he said, also offers a greater sense of personal satisfaction. “I like helping people with their projects, that’s what underlies it,” he said.

“I like it when people say, ‘Can you fix it? Can

you make it?’ and then getting the job done right for them.”

Currently weather-proofing a roof that is under an outside deck, he says that every job is different.

“That’s the thing I like, it’s fun to make use of all the skills I’ve picked up over the years and then applying them to a problem,” Brenton concluded.

Egg Board Back in 1968, Orange Egg Marketing Board’s depot, situated in part of the former Dalton’s Mill in Peisley Street, handled 23,000 dozen eggs weekly. The eggs came from poultry farms within a radius of about 75 miles around Orange, including Forbes, Eugowra, Wellington, Bathurst, Woodstock and Parkes.

The depot was managed by John Hawke and employed twelve others, including women who graded and packed the eggs.

Sometimes, at first glance, those suggestions seem to be not related to social history and almost impossible to lead to further discussion.

This is how I felt when the idea to look at the way “respect” has changed from our childhoods to the present day was suggested.

How wrong I was!

Everyone was enthusiastic and had something to contribute.

In our schooldays, respect for God, our country and royalty was instilled in us every morning by reciting The Pledge.

There were other things that we were taught to respect when we were young.

Boys were told they must open doors and stand aside for women.

Men wore hats which they raised when they met a woman but had to take off altogether when inside a house.

This was all a part of respecting women and giving them a special place in society.

Of course this has all changed now with the movement towards equality which is no doubt not before time, but some may regret the passing of what seemed to be a gentler society.

Final farewell to May Raechelle At the end of February 2022, we will close the doors of May Raechelle Gallery in Millthorpe for the final time after five, fun-packed years.

The bulldozers arrive soon after to raze the little white house we have called home for most of our art journey.

Our landlord (who has been so generous to us during our tenancy in both good times and bad) has some amazing plans for this patch of Millthorpe, so watch that space.

With no advertising budget, we relied on the generosity of newspapers and magazines to publish our articles about upcoming exhibitions.

Orange City Life magazine and Bathurst City Life magazine were particularly supportive, and we appreciate their help in highlighting the talent of artists in the local area. Orange Visitors Centre are also tremendously supportive of Millthorpe businesses.

It’s been quite an adventure, something we had always wanted to try and, with the support of the people of the Central West and beyond, we were able to achieve success.

Beginning in October 2016, we had our first rural art exhibition in 2017 and never looked back.

We wanted to be a gallery for the average person, just like ourselves. So, there were never going to be white walls

and plinths and certainly no looks from down our noses.

We hoped instead, that we were able to bring quality artworks from around the region and around the world which would appeal to everyone’s eye and budget.

Enormous ‘thank yous’ to our customers over the years. Whether you were regulars or one-offs, we appreciated your support and kind words about our gallery. It was great to get to know people from the area, some of whom became friends, not just customers.

The same also became true of many of our artists.

Regional artists – we are in awe of your talent. We have been so privileged to display your works.

To every artist who brought in works, felting, jewellery, mosaics, sculpture, ceramics, paintings, drawings, crafts, millinery, stained glass, even chocolate, you have incredible imaginations, abilities and skills.

Your works would easily be at home in galleries far more upmarket than our modest abode, but we were so glad you chose us.

We encourage you to find new places to show your works... you are all far too good to be hidden away.

Now I’m beginning to waffle on as usual, so all that’s left to say is ‘farewell’ and, perhaps, we’ll see you some day on a new adventure!

Thank-you to Orange, from an “honoured” candidate The 12 days of voting are over, and we are moving onto the “12 days of Christmas”.

But first for me, some post-election observations – what a roller coaster of a ride!

Delays, COVID restrictions on how to wage the battle of the corflute posters, the 100-metre rule on handing out how-to-vote cards, and the Electoral Commission site being down more than it was up; impacting on i-Voting.

Any wonder the informal votes is so high – it will probably never be known how this may have impacted on the outcome of the election and sentiments of the community.

I do know that many people commented they had no idea who was even standing. On the other hand, many voters came well-prepared and had obviously done their homework to make sure their vote counted.

Many were also confused by the absence of how-to-vote cards from candidates. I have my own questions about the cost, both financial and environmental, of elections and how we conduct them, wondering if it is not time for some new thinking.

After an event is a perfect time to reflect and learn, exploring options for ‘doing it better’ next time.

You know by now that I chose to stand as an independent candidate with no political or group allegiances in order that I be free to consider every issue impartially and informed by community sentiment.

This process has further convinced me that, while expedient, voting ‘above-the-line’ does not necessarily ensure the best outcome and, in reality, it is still a vote for an individual.

The voting process to select our Council for the next three years is done and just remains to be tallied.

I thank you for allowing me the honour of standing as one of your candidates and I wish all the best for our newly-elected mayor and councillors, as we lend our support to this team in securing the best possible outcomes for a prosperous Orange that preserves the best of who and what we are, while delivering progress that is intelligent, considered, innovative and aligned with community priorities.

And a shout-out to all the candidates who stood for election. Do not underestimate the physical, emotional and financial commitment required to put your hand up for election.

I never want to stand outside the Scout Hall, for 11 days, in extremes of weather in a bright-orange Visy vest, again.

However, it was worth it to meet so many remarkable people. Especially the first-time voters.

Loved showing them how to vote but not who to vote for... that seemed like taking advantage!
