We understand our new mayor, Cr Jason Hamling, was unable to officiate what would have been his first Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony due to contracting COVID-19 and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Canobolas top car-park is closed for upgrade

Sunday (30 January) is the day for Orange households living west of Anson Street to put bulky waste items on the kerb ready for pick-up.

The collection of waste will take place over the next two weeks.

Council is asking residents to place items into three separate piles — whitegoods, scrap metal and other bulky waste — as three separate trucks will be collecting the different items.

This means some bulky waste will be collected at different times, but other trucks will return for the rest, Council has advised.

For households east of Anson Street, the collection period begins on Sunday, 13 February.

Tanks for years of local service “EYESORE” is not a very charitable way to describe an old work-site that for many years faithfully served the community of Orange and surrounds.

But the former Caltex fuel depot and petrol station in Byng Street that has been a blight on the Colour City landscape seemingly-abandoned for nearly a decade, is finally being site-cleared.

Demolition teams from Victoria are slowly-removing the disused underground storage tanks and other contained material from the old facility adjacent to the main western rail line.

Summer storms have slowed the work, but otherwise there have been few hiccups with special care taken to ensure that any material of a hazardous nature is specially-marked and removed.

Future plans for the site are not known at this stage.

Blue summer for a wet city

National Parks and Wildlife have closed the car-park until late March for urgent repairs on the various potholes, loose gravel, and broken bitumen that mars the top of the Mount.

Visitors and locals though can still visit our greatest natural wonder but will need to park at the Federal Falls car-park or lower carparks on the mountain and hoof it from there.

Bushwalks across the mountain are still open, but walkers will have to avoid the summit precinct until the work is finished.

Below-average temperatures, high-winds, fallen trees in various parks around Orange, and full-dams, have been the order of the season as the La Nina wet-weather system has again dominated summer in the Colour City.

More than six inches of rain (155mm) have already fallen in Orange in January so far, with maximum temperatures a full three degrees below the January average of 27.5° C following a December that was nearly two degrees below normal.

Since the start of November, the district has received about 550mm of rain, nearly two feet in the old imperial scale, with November averaging only a daily maximum of barely 18° C, making this a very English summer by Central Tablelands standards.

COLOUR CITY VYING FOR A TIDY TOWN Representatives of Tidy Towns — that old perennial of local government awards — were back in Orange recently on a wet and windy day giving the Colour City a discerning eye for nominations in a number of categories.

These included: • for the Heritage and Cultural Category for “Indigenous artwork at Lake Canobolas”; • in the Community Spirit Category for “Enhancing Ploughman’s Wetlands through the voluntary work of the Ploughman’s Wetland Care Group” with this group having undertaken minor projects in the wetlands including revegetation, weed control; and the hosting of an annual event to celebrate World Wetlands Day; • for the Habitat and Wildlife Conservation Category for “Kinross School’s rehabilitation of the foreshores of Spring Creek Dam adjacent to their rowing pontoons”; • for the Renewable Energy Category for “Orange Regional Airport’s Solar Photovoltaic Carport System”.

Australia Day signals return to our working (and learning) lives Time to get to it!

Even though I’ve been back in the office for two weeks, the New Year doesn’t really begin for me until after Australia Day. With Test match cricket on the tele, many locals still away on hols, shops closed for their annual break or with limited staff, and hot endless summer days, the time between Christmas and January 26, is still the best time to kick-back and enjoy the benefits of climate, affluence, and not much happening, in the Lucky Country.

This was also the time that overseas rock bands (remember them?) used to hold their stadium tours of Australia, the Eagles, Dire Straits, Elton John, Queen, used to take advantage of our reversed seasons to tour Down Under and make a bucket of money while escaping the grey and brief winter days of the Northern Hemisphere.

But with schools returning, the onset of February, most businesses back in action, and the return of milder weather and lower humidity, that’s all over. Once the Oz Day flags, cricket set, and barbecue cooking utensils are back in the cupboard, I feel that it’s now time to get back to work and on with life.

My Ride — Debbie Robinson This is my 1977 CL Valiant Charger. I bought this about six years ago — I fell across it, actually. I wanted to buy myself a Ford Mustang, a ‘69 model. I went looking, but didn't like the ones I'd seen and then someone told me this was for sale and within ten minutes, I owned it!

I think it was the shape and the colour and the style of it, and I like that it is an old school car.

It is awesome to drive... now, after I've done a lot of work to it! It was a bit hairy at first, but I've since modified a lot of things on it and got it back to normal and now it is very pleasant to drive — and powerful if you want it to be!

I tried motorbikes prior to this as I just wanted to get into something different.

I used to race karts for about 20 years and this is sort of my next stage. My son still races, he's been Australian champion over the years and is state champion currently, but it's been 15 years since I’ve been in a kart — this is my big go-kart these days!

I'd like a convertible of something one day, but nothing’s popped up yet… and I'd possibly need another garage, so it's on the back burner at the moment.

Because, despite our mild, cool summer, almost universal airconditioning in homes, shops, offices and vehicles, I still believe that we are creatures of the seasons. Mid-summer for me seems to bring on not just a relaxed lethargy, but also the slowing down of our thought processes and even our metabolism.

Many a time I’ve gone out in mid-summer heat to chip a few weeds and, after 20 minutes, have felt like I can barely drag myself back to the pleasant cool indoors. It’s one of the reasons why I believe that, if anyone bar the British (or maybe, Germans) had settled Australia for the European powers, we would have had siestas to escape the heat of the midday sun.

Conversely, who hasn’t woken-up on one of those crisp, clear Central Tablelands autumn mornings with the first tinge of cool in the air, blackberries on the vine, and trees just starting to change colour, without a wonderful sense of being alive?

Later, we look-out on those frosted, frozen still days with the sun barely peaking over the horizon at 8am, jump into the shower for quick wash with a day’s work ahead, and think we’d rather be on the Gold Coast for a few weeks…

“Seasonal Affective Disorder” (SAD) impacts us all to a greater or lesser extent, though we in the country do have the compensating option of open fires and gas-heated houses not available to many of our coastal cousins.

Then those first, quickening feelings of spring with the first buds on the trees and the realisation that the worst of winter is behind us.

Followed by the first couple of heat-wave days as Christmas again approaches with the expectation of family, fun, holidays, and a few weeks away from work.

If change is proof of life, then we should all be grateful for living in a part of Australia where we have the true four seasons.

Well-deserved recognit ion

A

t the Orange Family History Group’s first meeting of the year, librarian Sean Brady made a special presentation to a genuinely-surprised, long-serving member, Lynne Irvine.

When the group met last Tuesday (18 January), Lynne was given a Certificate of appreciation in: "Recognition of time, effort and dedication over the past 15 years developing Orange Cemetery Database."

For researchers, family historians and genealogists, resources like cemetery databases are invaluable. Today so much of that information is available at the click of a mouse and it is sometimes easy to overlook just how much work is involved in putting it all together — often by volunteers such as Lynne and other family history group members.

“It is an amazing amount of work and a very dedicated group of people,” said

The cemetery database story began around 25 years ago, when Orange Family History Group volunteers began meticulously cataloguing and mapping graves in Orange and surrounding village cemeteries like Amaroo, Byng, Cadia, Cargo, Chinamen’s Bend, Guyong, March, Ophir and Spring Hill.

Headstone inscriptions were transcribed and locations mapped by religion, section, row, and plot. Dates and names were then cross-referenced with other council and church records — a staggering and tedious amount of work that occupied several years for the small group.

And Lynne along with her fellow volunteers have continued checking names and dates with other records like: Trove; Births, Deaths and Marriages; the Ryerson Index and others.

...It is an amazing amount of work and Lynne has dedicated the last 15 years to doing that...

The result of all that work can now be found on the Orange City Council website as a downloadable spreadsheet and cemetery maps.

“It is an amazing amount of work and Lynne has dedicated the last 15 years to doing that,” said Julie.

This information was published on CD ROM in 2002 and sold to raise money for the Orange Family History Group.

“Also, before she handed it over to me Lynne created a manual, the ‘Bible’ on how it came together.”

FROM PEAK HILL TO CARNEGIE HALL: Anabelle Van Wyk is going places — JONATHAN ROE —

A

t just 14-years-old, local saxophonist Anabelle Van Wyk has already amassed an impressive collection of achievements, but in July she will fulfill many a musician's dream when she plays Carnegie Hall, New York.

“Not too long ago I found out I was the winner in the Intermediate category (13-15 years) of the ‘Golden Classical Music Awards’,” said an excited Anabelle, who plays at an Australian Music Board Examination Grade 7 level.

The ‘Golden Classical Music Awards’ purpose is to discover artists of

outstanding personality and launch them on the international stage.

Anabelle was among musicians from 33 countries to enter the awards in 2022.

This July she will join other winners in a recital at New York City’s famous Carnegie Hall, considered the most prestigious concert stage in the United States.

Carnegie Hall is a long way from where the Kinross Wolaroi student first began her performing career; busking on the streets of Peak Hill!

“In Peak Hill, near where we lived, there was this competition, the Australian National Busking Championships. Mum was like, you should enter, and I did,” said Anabelle,

who was 9-years-old at the time.

“I didn't even have a mic or a speaker or anything! So I was just standing there singing and playing at nine!”

In 2020, Anabelle was named the Australian Busking Championships Junior Champion, and she has even earned enough change to buy her very own microphone and portable speaker.

“It is really fun just playing on the street,” said Anabelle, who enjoys busking in and out of competitions.

“You are not getting marked on it — usually. So you don't have to play it perfectly, it is just fun!”

Following the win in the Busking

Championships, Anabelle was offered a scholarship to join the Sydney Youth Orchestra's Symphonic Wind Orchestra.

“It’s really good and there are a lot of good players with different skills and it is good to play with other woodwind players,” said Anabelle, who has been asked to remain with the orchestra for 2022.

Her success has not come about without a lot of hard work, but Anabelle is keen to encourage other young musicians in rural areas to follow their dreams.

“Keep playing and looking for opportunities and eventually you'll find them,” she said.

First Indigenous elected representative for the Colour City, he believes that his lived experiences can help overcome crime and social issues afflicting some of our poorer suburbs.

Succeeding after three previous attempts for Council, he said that the accrued community profile he had created over nearly two decades finally paid-off.

Before the poll, he had publicly-stated that it was time that our original Australians were represented on Orange City Council, seeing his election as righting an historic oversight for the city.

“That was my fourth time that I had run, and I think the reason that I got elected this time is my higher profile.

“I experienced racism many times, and then I came to Orange, and I thought, ‘Jeez, they’re friendly here’,” he said.

“I’m hoping to provide a definite Indigenous voice for the city that I felt had been lacking as an Indigenous man,” Cr Power said.

“It’s about being consistent and building a voter-base since 2004, about working with the community and being known, and building the base up,” he said.

He said though that he has more than one string to his bow with a strong background in community services, much of it with the local Aboriginal community.

Cr Power was first-place on his independent “Power to Change” six-person group ticket in December’s poll, that, largely by chance, ended-up being comprised of all Aboriginal candidates.

“It was an all-Indigenous ticket, yes, but that was an accident, I actually had two non-Indigenous candidates on my ticket but, when I rang them up in September when I was really trying to get people to run with me, they said, ‘Oh, we’re running now on another ticket’,” he laughed.

“I think it’s a benefit that I was a public servant for many years with Family and Community Services (FACS), and I noted that a lot of other candidates didn’t have that public service background.”

From the Juru people of Bowen near Townsville in north Queensland, he came to Orange nearly four decades ago at a time when racism was still highly-prevalent in Australia.

Cr Power also believes that the outreach community work that he and others introduced to Glenroi and other parts of Orange during a crime wave in 2004–2005 can be reactivated in the future.

“When I was growing-up, it wasn’t cool to be black and I travelled to many towns, but Orange was different, the

“We had a crime wave with cars being burnt-out and we had a program addressing community poverty and anti-social behaviour; the cars are being burnt-out again, and now it’s time to go back to do ‘A, B, C, D, and E’ just like we did then,” he said.

“It’s about engagement, it’s about taking those stakeholders on board… the problems have re-emerged with a new generation that need engagement,” he said.

Cr Power said that this philosophy ties-in with his belief in the importance of the new Council placing emphasis on community consultation.

“One of the things I’ve noticed, is the consulting with the community process needs more of a push. For instance, the draft social housing plan only had something like 13 community responses, it may have been a few more, but not much.

“That’s a low response for an issue that affects the community, a lot of people have read it, but decided, for one reason or the other, not to comment. That’s something that we’ve got to do a lot better with… the consultation process was my first-point on my fourpronged platform,” Cr Power said.

He added that cultural heritage protection around new developments like the proposed mountain bike tracks for Mt Canobolas are another central component of his plans on Council.

“This is not about stopping the bike track being built, but of identifying some of the cultural-sensitive areas that it needs to avoid.

“Local elders tell me that the consultation process, until now, wasn’t quite good enough in that regard, I’d like to see it done better,” Cr Power concluded.

THERE'S A MUSIC GROUP FOR ALL AT THE CON Play an instrument? Love to sing? No matter your age, there’s a group or ensemble waiting for you at the Orange Regional Conservatorium.

“We want to invite our community to come and make music with us,” said Orange Regional Conservatorium (ORC) Director, Donna Riles.

It has been a tough few years for music lovers, with Covid restrictions severely limiting the ability of musicians to get together and play, let alone perform for a crowd. But with a new year ahead, Donna is keen to see the ORC’s many group offerings thrive once more.

“Given the last few years we've had, where we've been on and off with music making, this year it will be great to celebrate the return of live music,” she said.

“So whether you are a saxophonist and you want to play in a jazz band, or you are a drummer and you want to play in the concert band, whether you are a bass guitarist or a singer — there is something for you here!”

And it truly doesn’t matter what age you are.

“You can come in for our Early Childhood Music program as a babe in arms. Mum, Dad, Gran, or carer can bring a child along to an Early Childhood Music class through the week. It's a 40-minute class about engaging with music for the first time, whether it is singing or moving, listening and creating music from a very early age.”

For children aged 4-6, there is the MiniMUSOS, which is about learning to sing and getting introduced to a new instrument each term.

Then, whether you play strings, woodwind, brass or percussion, there is an ensemble or band to suit all ages and abilities, said Donna.

Choir for people who want to sing the big works by Bach, Beethoven and the rest and they will be performing Handel's Messiah in April here in Orange,” said Donna.

And if you just love to sing, but don’t want to take it too seriously, then the Come Together Choir is for you.

Choirs are probably the most accessible way to become involved in community music making and the ORC has groups that cater for beginners and more advanced singers. There is even a choir for children as young as 4-years-old!

“We have a long history of having a really good variety of great ensembles: from singing to playing, junior youth orchestras to jazz bands, and children's choirs to adult choirs,” she said.

“We have choirs for infants to primary-aged children, then we have a group called Crescendo, where children start to sing in parts and enjoy singing in our concerts together. We have a ladies choir called Caesura, the Chamber Choir, who rehearse and perform four part choral repertoire — some fantastic popular and traditional songs.

Be a student buddy FOR COUNTRY UNI KIDS LOCKDOWN HAS BEEN TOUGHER ON OUR UNIVERSITY AND TAFE STUDENTS THAN MANY PEOPLE REALISE. In light of this, locally-based non-profit, the Country Education Foundation (CEF), is looking to expand a special mentoring program for students it supports.

Recently-elected Chairperson of the CEF for Orange and District, Sue Rogan said a successful pilot of the support project last year, will see it expanded for 2022 with volunteers now being sought.

“We’re looking for ‘Friends of the CEF’; for anyone interested in looking towards being a ‘buddy’ for a student on our program,” Sue explained.

With their head office in Orange, the CEF offers grants and scholarships for country kids to get an education with the new program designed to support that work.

“If a student gets one of our grants, we want to know how they’re coping with everything. It might be a phone call or maybe have a coffee with them to see how they’re going,” Sue explained.

“We trialled it last year and it worked quite well, and many of our buddies metup with their students, just to touch-base and see everything was going well.”

Coming from a teaching background, Sue appreciates the important work of the CEF in supporting the learning aspirations of students from rural backgrounds.

“My background has been in education, I taught at a number of western NSW

“I was also Regional Vocational Education Consultant with the Department of Education and worked with teachers at small schools in western NSW.” “Most recently, I worked for CSU (Charles Sturt University) and developed a program to encourage young people to go to university, that program still runs and is called ‘Future Moves’.”

This background, she said, had shown her both the difficulties and opportunities of tertiary education for kids from the bush.

“Basically, I’ve had a long history and experience in understanding the challenges faced by young people wishing to attend university and how that

gets Molong cooking Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations (Cadia) has supported GrowMolong to capture the culinary history of the town through a Heritage Cookbook.

The book features recipes from the district’s families including many agricultural show winners and street stall favourites.

The donation which was made through Cadia’s Community Partnership Program helped turn the cookbook into a reality with 1,000 copies now available for sale.

GrowMolong Secretary, Julie Dean, said the local community has come together to contribute to the cookbook which acknowledges the heirloom and culinary skills of generations of families who contributed to the growth of the rural community.

“The recipes are all from around Molong. We have chased up the really good cooks in town to get them to donate their recipes and also included a photo or a piece of history that goes with that particular recipe.”

Cadia is the major sponsor of the Heritage Cookbook with numerous local business and families also supporting the publication.

Copies can be purchased from various outlets across the region including the Molong SPAR supermarket, Molong Express, and the Shell Petrol Station (48-52 Peisley St, Orange).

COUNCIL AT WORK Next approvals milestone for mountain bike trails project environmentally sensitive area of State significance, it would be assessed for approval by NSW Government under the State Environmental Planning Policy (State and Regional Development) 2011 (SRD SEPP).

The proposal to build a 100-kilometre network of mountain bike trails on Mt Canobolas has reached a new milestone with Orange City Council lodging the paperwork to seek State Government planning approval.

After 12 months of investigation by a team of environmental consultants, archaeologists and track design experts, Council has lodged the application with the Department of Industry Planning and Environment (DPIE) for the project to be considered as a State Significant Development (SSD).

Council maintenance crews pushing ahead in difficult conditions Orange City Council’s maintenance crews are pushing ahead with the massive task of maintaining the city’s parks and reserves amid damp conditions and staffing shortages due to COVID-19.

The city has received 475 millimeters of rain since the beginning of November, with ground conditions rendering some areas inaccessible for mowing teams, while regular showers and spring and summer growth has created further difficulties for Council crews and contractors.

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said the team was pulling out all the stops to maintain the city’s presentation, while ensuring parks, gardens and open spaces were available for the community to use.

“Council has a proactive works program that prioritises the maintenance of high-use areas across the city, such as Robertson Park and Cook Park, Moulder Park and the Orange Botanic Gardens, as well as playgrounds, sporting fields and key entry roads to Orange,” Cr Hamling said.

“While all our public spaces are important, others take a lower priority, especially when we are experiencing limitations due to weather and staffing shortages due to COVID-19.”

The rain has made it difficult to keep the grass under control as crews simply cannot get the machinery into some places and it is taking longer to mow areas because of how quickly the grass has grown.

Mayor Hamling is asking the community to be patient during this time.

“Staff availability is having a huge impact on what we can get to and while we do have contractors, they’re experiencing the same challenges as we are,” Cr Hamling said.

Temporary signs advising the community of ground conditions and mowing delays have been installed in affected areas.

As part of the process DPIE will consider a report called a Preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment (PEIA) compiled by the environmental consultants, The Environmental Factor.

The PEIA provides an overview of the project and considers the potential environmental impacts that may result from the proposed works.

Additionally, the PEIA proposes potential mitigation measures or safeguards to avoid, minimise, mitigate or offset these potential impacts.

Mayor Hamling said there had been some opposition to the project including from members of the local Aboriginal community.

“We want those voices to continue to be heard through the process. We have had discussions on the proposal with the Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council and will continue to do so,” Cr Hamling said.

The project has now been listed on a DPIE site which lists ‘Major Projects’ which are being considered under the State Significant Development process.

I love doing jigsaw puzzles and I got one for Christmas. I had it set up in a room out of the way and any spare moment I had was spent poring over it.

As each piece was put in place I could see the big picture emerging. It took me two weeks to finish and what a delight when the last piece was finally put in place!

The Bible can be like a jigsaw puzzle with many pieces fitting together.

However, to see how it does, takes some effort. Maybe you heard the story of Jesus’ birth over Christmas. If you are not familiar with it and want to be, the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) are a good place to start. Why don’t you trace Jesus’ journey between the crib and the cross (as Easter will be here soon) and piece His life together. When you do, you’ll want to keep going to see the bigger picture emerge from both the Old and New Testaments. It has taken me years, not weeks, but what a difference it has made to my life. I can see my place in God’s world and you can too!

Exploding COVID numbers and the mature age of most of their members though has seen the Orange Court Support group banned for another year from Orange Court-house.

Coordinator Helen now wants to get the message out to dozens of new volunteers who generously joined the group last year that, unfortunately: “we’re back on hold”.

“We were recently advised that, due to high COVID cases, the Support Group

is unable to do their work for another 12-months,” Helen said.

“We’re all pretty sad about it, but there are still restrictions at the Court and they’re only letting people in one at a time… it’s pretty upsetting, but with many of our members over 70, it’s probably the right thing to do,” she added.

Following a major publicity campaign in “Orange City Life”, Helen said the group were pleasantly-surprised when a big crowd attended their public meeting to keep the service going.

“We had over 60 people come to the meeting we called for new volunteers, we couldn’t believe it, I was blown away.

“But we’re now letting all our volunteers know that we can’t go back yet… many are not online, and we don’t necessarily have all their current phone numbers and such,” Helen added.

A non-denominational, ecumenical group, Orange Court Support ploughs a lonely furrow with their good deeds unknown to most of us, unless we happen to come before the stern gaze of the law.

“We are not a very well-known group as we go about our work quietly but effectively. We have been in operation for the last 19 years offering a cup of tea with compassion and care to all those who come before the court system in Orange,” Helen explained.

“We just don’t do that, we organise gifts for children whose parents are in jail at Christmas-time; in 2019 we provided pressies for 18 children in the 2800 postcode,” Helen explained.

“We also send one or two local children to a special camp for kids whose parents are incarcerated; the kids who go along are all in the same situation.”

Most of the funds for their work, comes from a special luncheon held late each year, the event that Helen would like to still see go ahead: “Even though we can’t do the court work, we’re just hoping that we can still have our luncheon for the kids,” she said.

“Maybe by the end of the year, the restrictions will be done, and we can afford the presents for children in the local postcode. You can only hope and pray,” Helen said. For more information, call 0428 650 234 or 6361 4885.

Could success destroy the historic character of Millthorpe, locals wonder.

Long-time former president of the Village Committee, John Mason, fears Millthorpe could be losing what makes it unique.

Saved by benign neglect with a static population from the end of World War I to the 1990s, it’s increasing popularity has seen a number of new developments proposed for the community located 25km south-east of Orange.

Latest is a 53-lot estate planned for the quaint northern entrance to the historic village which follows hot the heels of a controversial 23-lot development recently passed for the western side of the village’s railway line.

Long-time local and former president of the Village Committee, John Mason, fears that the community could be losing the one thing that makes it unique.

Learning the lesson from Blayney Council seemingly-ignoring their opposition to the western development, he said residents are being more proactive the second-time around.

“This new development is off Park Street and is a total of 53 lots but, this time, the village committee and other groups are more organised.

“After the ‘Mortimer development’ (after the property-owner’s name), we quickly felt that we had left our opposition too late; this

Concern over the development saw a recent meeting at the Good Templar’s Hall of the Millthorpe Museum attract dozens of locals.

The new subdivision would create 49 lots of 700–900 square metres each to be built over four stages, a submission to Council says.

Vince Murphy believes new developments are destroying what attracts people to Millthorpe.

“We had about 40 there and another 20 on Zoom… there is a sense that we could very well lose the very thing that makes Millthorpe the community that it is, that sense of village life,” Mr Mason said.

He said that the combined number of blocks for the two developments could see the village population increase by 20 percent in a very short period of time with no offsetting infrastructure.

“What will the impact be with the Mortimer’s and this, making about 76 more blocks in the town? With no extra infrastructure or green space… there’s a feeling that, once what we have here is gone, it will be gone forever,” he said.

One of the objections that locals had to the west Millthorpe “Mortimer subdivision”, is the size of the blocks as low as 585 metres square, about an eighth of an acre, with one councillor who voted for the proposal claiming that that this was in sympathy with the village’s historic building density.

He believes that locals understand that some development is inevitable due to the village’s burgeoning popularity and the pandemic seeing increasing numbers of city-siders seeking escape to the country. This, he said, puts Blayney Council in a difficult situation.

Mr Mason believes that developments in the village should pay greater imposts for matching infrastructure to ensure that the residents aren’t left footing the bill for new roads and green spaces.

“I just hope that these developments take place in a more sustainable way,” he said.

“The poor village will be surrounded by housing and the worst of it is, the historical side will end up lost. This will be a tragedy, not only for the people who settled there, and for the existing residents. Please save Millthorpe, as its history will be gone all together,” he said.

The Development Application seeks consent from Blayney Shire Council for a 53-lot Torrens Title subdivision, comprising 49 urban residential lots; one low-density residential lot containing the existing bluestone cottage; and two on-site detention basins.

The subdivision for the north Millthorpe development would adjoin existing residential lots along Church Street to the south and obtain access from a newlycreated access road off Millthorpe Road (Park St), just to the south of the heritagelisted cottage on the land.

Half a century on; healing the FIFTY-YEAR COMMEMORATIONS FOR END OF VIETNAM WAR PLANNED FOR 2023

Formerly Long Tan Day — named after Australia’s most famous action in the 10year conflict — Vietnam Veteran’s Day has only been held since the mid-1980s.

This is not just to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice of the 521 Australians in the jungles, bush, and villages of South Vietnam, but also to heal the unseen wounds of these servicemen and women.

VIETNAM VETERAN LINDSAY WRIGHT RECALLS THE DAY THAT HE AND A GROUP OF HIS MATES WERE REFUSED ENTRY TO ONE OF SYDNEY’S LARGEST RSL CLUBS. “When we came home prior to being discharged, four of us went to Parramatta RSL and, when we told them we had been in Vietnam, they said we weren’t allowed to enter the club,” he recalls.

“That’s one of the kick in the guts that we received,” the lifetime local and president of the Orange Vietnam Veterans Association, said.

Another time, he recalls a less-thanwelcome reaction from a local bus driver.

“I remember I was coming home on leave, and the train stopped at Blayney, I started walking to Orange and a bus came along, I tried to flag him down and he wouldn’t stop, the bugger. I presume it was because of my uniform. So, I kept walking until I got a lift,” he laughed.

Helping overcome the bitter memories of this most contentious of Australia’s armed conflicts is one aim of Federal Government plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of our involvement in the decade’s old conflict in 2023.

Local Member and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, Andrew Gee, recently announced that the Australian Government has committed $6 million to ensure this important milestone is marked with appropriate respect and appreciation for all those who served and those who gave their lives in Vietnam.

“Australia owes our Vietnam veterans an enormous debt of gratitude,” Mr Gee said.

“Almost 60,000 Australians served in the Vietnam War, 521 lost their lives and more than 3000 were wounded. We honour and remember the service and sacrifice of each and every one of them.”

Mr Gee said that the anniversary will be an important opportunity to heal the wounds of the past.

“The Vietnam War and its aftermath exacted a heavy toll on all those who served and their families. The treatment of our diggers upon their return home by some of their fellow Australians remains a source of hurt and pain for many,” Mr Gee said.

In the Service Corp at Nui Dat in Vung Tau province between October 1967 and 1968, he experienced mortar attacks on the camp and later went on a number of patrols with US-based helicopter groups.

But it was on his return home that he found-out how unpopular the “Vietnam Conflict”, by then subject to widespread anti-war opposition and increasing community ambivalence, had become.

“I was regular army,” Garry Roach says to distinguish from the “regular” and “National Service” (conscripted) soldiers of the Australian forces. “I was there in 1967–68; we viewed it that we were doing our duty, it was that simple” he said.

Bryan Hutchinson who “toured” Vietnam in 1970 was one of the thousands of conscripts drawn-out of the lotto-style ballot depending on your birthdate. For about 200 National Servicemen who died during the 1962–75 conflict, the “winning” numbers meant that you, indeed, lost.

That the sons of so many wealthy, wellconnected Australians were able to gain “deferment” through either attending university, marriage, or from vague medical conditions, was one of the reasons for the increasing unpopularity of the conflict at home.

Ironically for such a bitter conflict, Lindsay was one of the thousands of Australians who never actually volunteered, but who were conscripted in a national draft determined by a macabre lottery drawn by birth-dates.

For Lindsay, his call-up also came at the most inopportune time, the day he returned from his honeymoon!

“I was a ‘Nasho’ (National Servicemen). I had finished school and I worked on the Railways before being called-up.

“I went and did my medical, but they said that I had failed, but when I came home from the honeymoon, there were the papers… I came home on the Friday, and I was in the Army on the Monday, I had to catch the train out of Orange on the Sunday,” he recalls.

“I went to Kapooka (Wagga Wagga) for basic training and then Puckapunyal (Victoria), and then to the Russell Building at Canberra (Duntroon).

“My colonel at Randwick then said: ‘you’re going to Vietnam’ but, by then, my wife Carol was pregnant with our first

“We got home between midnight and 3am; they brought us home between those hours to avoid the protests,” Lindsay explained.

Other veterans interviewed at a recent commemoration day for the Vietnam War at Orange Cenotaph, have similar memories.

Many recall without rancour the slights that they were subject to on return from our most controversial of wars but one in which they conducted themselves with professionalism, courage, and a sense of

“There’s no point in recriminations now, being bitter will kill you,” Bill Murphy said.

“I was there from the start of the Tet Offensive in April 1969,” Clark Bell said of the major Vietcong/North Vietnamese campaign that is credited with turning world opinion against the US-led war against the communist North Vietnamese.

“Would you believe that, after I came back, I went into an RSL and they said, ‘you have to be signed in by a World War I or World War II veteran?’ We weren’t in a ‘real war,’ we were only a ‘peacekeeping force’ they told me.”

Abuse from radicalised university students towards soldiers was commonplace at the time, he said, but believes that now is a time of healing. He said that the view of Australia’s 1965–75 involvement (the last Australian combat units were withdrawn in 1973) in the conflict had changed for the better.

“The early rejection that we suffered, that was a long time ago, everything’s different now.“ He said that most Australians who remember those divisive times see now that the abuse of individual Australian troops was wrong.

“When we were abused by everybody, that doesn’t exist anymore. A lot of people have seen their ways. They realise now that it wasn’t the soldier’s fault, it was the government that sent us,” he said.

Most of the men agreed, saying that since the late 1980s, Australians views of the men facing the conflict, have changed.

“I think so, I asked a young woman today ‘where’s the cenotaph?’ and she asked ‘why’, and I said I was coming here for the Vietnam Veteran’s ceremony, and she said: ‘Thank-you very much for what you did’,” another of the men said.

“I had a friend who was marching in Sydney, this woman came-out and threw a bucket of red paint all over him and called him a ‘baby killer,’ and he’d been over there building schools and housing and the like.

“I remember it vividly, I was just 19, but I can recall it all pretty well,” he said. “We started up as fire management batteries and then it went to ‘danger close,’ which meant you had no margin of error, you had to have everything right or you could land on your own positions,” he said.

“And the Army, they made him pay for the dry-cleaning, to clean his own uniform,” he concluded.

He still remembers the way that many of the soldiers were treated, with mail strikes denying them postal packages and letters from home.

Mr Gee said that the 50th anniversary is another step in this healing process and urged veterans who still suffer from this conflict, to seek help.

“I left the army and never talked about it, I can’t say ‘no, there is no anger left’ I didn’t want apologies from everyone, but from the people who protested, who abused the soldiers,” he explained.

“We owe the men and women who served in Vietnam nothing less than a commemorative program that reflects their extraordinary service and sacrifice. Our country will always be grateful for it, and

Conscripts, who were often tacitlyallowed to remain back in Australia if they told their commanding officers that they objected to the war, mostly chose to remain in their units due to a sense of camaraderie and mateship.

“If you didn’t want to go with your unit, you could tell your officer and no-one would know,” another of the men said.

“It was like parachuting, I didn’t want to jump-out of a perfectly-good Caribou (army transport plane) but everyone else was, so I shut my eyes and ran at the hatch,” another added.

“In the end we got through it, and I believe that the army made me a better person, it gave me the confidence that I simply didn’t have.”

“For livestock, this makes it a lot less stressful, they don’t have to be put on a truck and transported to wherever for the abattoir; for the farmers themselves, they don't have to yard them up,” David added.

“If anything, it’s made us busier. People can stock their freezer without going to town and, particularly, they can avoid supermarkets, butchers, and restaurants. It’s ideal for those that want to avoid crowds at this time.

The grazier also knows the quality standards that they themselves have applied in their production, the inputs, and what they’ve been fed.

“Instead, they can see the meals in their paddock and, if they don’t have to go the supermarket, they’re thinking, ‘why not?’,” David added.

“They know where the meat’s coming from and how they’ve been produced, it isn’t just big farmers, but for small, hobby farmers with a few sheep as well,” David said.

There was a lot of interest in the 39th annual ram sale which was held at Orange Showground in January 1962. Organised by Winchcombe Carson, there were 111 Merino rams offered for sale, with a 75 per cent clearance. Top price for a Merino flock ram from Jerilderie was 100 guineas. Not far behind in price was a Dorset Horn ram from P G Harris of ‘Florina’, Forest Reefs, which fetched 90 guineas.

A berry good start to the year for JAM Orange — JONATHAN ROE — Volunteer-run local music advocacy group, Jam Orange, are kicking off a big program of events with a twilight, familyfriendly concert at the Huntley Berry Farm on Saturday 5 February.

‘A Berry Good Jam’ is the first JAM Orange gig of the year and will feature three local acts: popular bush band, November Shorn, upbeat country fun from The Dougies; and the soulful sounds of Natalie McIver.

“This will be the first one of the year for JAM but we are thinking of doing a few concerts out at the berry farm,” said JAM Orange committee member AnneMaree McLaughlin.

“It will be an evening, fireside, family affair promoting local talent. People can go out and pick berries, bring a picnic or there will be food and drink available so it should be a fun family day out.”

There will be COVID-safe seating available at the concert as well as an area

to spread out your own picnic blanket, lie back and take in the music.

JAM Orange was formed in 2015 by a group of local musicians and music enthusiasts keen to create more performing and recording opportunities for Orange artists.

The organisation has grown steadily since and has a big program of events planned for 2022.

The Festival of Small Halls returns to Orange’s Bloomfield Hall on Sunday February 27, and features the ridiculously talented one-man-band, Juzzie Smith, alongside Oceanic soul/blues artist Karen Lee Smith, and local three-piece act The Boneyard Tango.

The inaugural Orange Winter Jazz Festival is the big new addition to the local music calendar in 2022.

For three days over the June long weekend, halls and hotels will become festival stages for an ever-growing line-up

of visiting and local talent, including Vince Jones, The Celebration of Swing, Mahalia Barnes, Emma Pask, Andy Baylor, The Catholics, This World and more.

“You can really see the potential for the Orange Winter Jazz Festival,” said organising committee member, Robert McLaughlin.

“SIMA, the Sydney Independent Music Association, are on board and they have a lot of experience running events and they are going to get up and give us a hand…

The beauty of it is all the venues are within walking distance, everything is in the CBD, so businesses are going to benefit too.

JAM Orange Open Mics are also returning in 2022, with the first of the year scheduled to take place at the Orange City Bowling Club on Wednesday February 9.

Patrick curates the Spotify playlist ‘Central West Sounds’, a showcase of original music being created in Orange and neighbouring communities from Lithgow to Dubbo. He’s encouraging music lovers and especially businesses to get behind our local talent by subscribing and giving the playlist a listen.

“The idea is for people to gain awareness of what local music is being created, written, performed and recorded here,” said Patrick.

“Just like supporting local food and wine that's

produced here, by playing music that’s created here in your business, it’s getting them a listening audience… It also assists the musicians as playing their music feeds into the algorithms and that helps them then get suggested for other people to listen to.”

The playlist features over three hours of original music from local artists and Patrick adds new songs every month.

“It is a curated listen, it covers different genres, but it works and the songs flow. I don't put anything explicit on there, because it is something to be played in businesses and settings like cafes and restaurants, so it has got to be music that's targeted to a wide audience,” he said.

coming out and I have never been stuck at any time with nothing to put on it. So instead of playing the golden oldies that have been played a million times, why not give this playlist a go? It’s something you can do to help local musicians.”

And if you do discover artists you like, make a point to buy music directly from them, he said “Look up the artist and buy the music from them, because that is where they really make their money, streaming helps raise awareness of their music, but it doesn’t help them with making money.”

takes his central west sound on east coast tour — JONATHAN ROE — For Mortimer, this is a tour that has been nine years in the making and all the delays and difficulties of the past two years have only made him even more determined to succeed.

“Hopefully it is the beginning of many more, but it has been a bit of a stressful process in the current climate,” says Mortimer, who despite dealing with his fair share of postponed and cancelled shows throughout the pandemic, remains optimistic.

“That has been very hard; I've had a lot of setbacks and I've definitely built my resilience. A lot of people I know have packed it in and given up on music, because it hasn't been kind in the last two years,” he says.

“But I'm definitely a very resilient person and someone that's willing to give it my all.

If anything, missing music and not having the opportunity to play has probably made me a little more hungry to do it full time and professionally… and maybe take a few

risks, so that's what this tour is. I'm really looking forward to it, fingers crossed it all goes to plan, but as I said, whatever comes my way I'd be able to roll with it.”

That determination and drive to succeed has certainly been called upon putting this tour together.

“I've got a really great following in the central west, I honestly think it is probably the reason I stayed around for so long,” he says.

“That has been a lot of hard work. I've called and spoken to various different places and pub owners to try and back my music and really did make myself quite vulnerable and put myself out there,” says Mortimer, who now has a month of dates confirmed along the east coast from Port Macquarie to Brisbane.

“I've had wonderful support from various pubs and clubs for the last nine years and I've built up a really good fan base of loyal followers and fans that come out to all my shows. To now be able to play my songs that I've written here in Orange, and share them with different parts of the world is pretty exciting!

“I’ve been lucky enough to book in quite a few places up the east coast and I am really excited about it! I've done shows in different parts of Australia, but this is all to do my music.”

‘200 years too late’ is the second studio album from Mortimer and one with its roots firmly in the central west. Released in November 2021, the album was recorded in

Sorting nuts-and-bolts of new league conference The hundred-year-old history of Central Tablelands rugby league enters a new phase in 2022 after two interrupted and disappointing pandemic-hit seasons for the local group.

The nuts, bolts, and by-laws of the new Group 10–11 rugby league conference competition were ironedout at a recent steering committee meeting of Group 10 and Group 11 representatives of the inaugural central west competition.

Schedule and draw for the newlytitled “Peter McDonald Premiership” will see the opening round featuring several blockbuster clashes, including a heavyweight showdown between Group 10’s Orange CYMS and Group 11’s Dubbo CYMS. The Peter McDonald Premiership is open to all clubs from Group 10 and Group 11 in western NSW and includes a conference system and crossover games and a top eight finals system involving teams from each conference.

For action-starved footie fans looking forward to the first game of the season, Mudgee will again host the traditional Charity Shield clash between last year’s defeated grand finalists, the South Sydney Rabbitohs against long-time rivals, the St George Dragons on Saturday, February 26.

Other NRL action this year will include last year’s premiers, the Penrith Panthers playing the popular

Closer to home, the local league action starts with the annual Bathurst Knockout for all first grade and under 18s sides on the Friday and Saturday, March 4–5.

The new central west conference league is the big news locally though with the ultimate premiers being invited to take part in the end-of-season Presidents Cup against the winners of the Ron Massey Cup (Central Conference), Denton Engineering Cup (Northern Conference) and Mojo Homes Illawarra Cup (Southern Conference) to determine the State Champion.

NSWRL Head of Football, Robert Lowrie thanked all stakeholders who had worked on the recently-released schedule.

He added the Peter McDonald Premiership was part of the NSWRL “One State” Strategic Plan which creates new competition opportunities to further strengthen rugby league across the State.

“The Peter McDonald Premiership is an exciting development for rugby league in western NSW as it is the first time in history there has been a regular season competition between Group 10 and Group 11,” Mr Lowrie said.

“The NSWRL has been in constant communication with all parties throughout the process and I thank them for their support, including Evan Jones from the steering committee and David Skinner for his work on the 2022 schedule.

“The region has a proud history of producing Rugby League stars and I’m sure that tradition will continue when the Peter McDonald Premiership kicks off next season.”

The opening round for the weekend of April 2–3 will see Orange CYMS up against Dubbo CYMS at Wade Park, with both teams finishing on top of the table of their respective Groups last season before the competitions were abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There will also be plenty of interest when the Orange Hawks, coached by former NRL player Shane Rodney who won premierships with the Penrith Panthers and Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, takes on Nyngan Tigers at

The 2022 schedule release was welcomed by both Group 10 chairperson, Linore Zamparini and Group 11 chairperson, Bob Walsh.

“It’s great to see the Peter McDonald Premiership come to fruition and it will be a thrill to see the clubs from Group 10 and Group 11 line up against each other,” Mr Zamparini said.

“There has been a lot of hard work gone in from a lot of people to get

to this point and I can’t wait for the competition to start in 2022.”

Mr Walsh agreed, adding: “The Peter McDonald Premiership will be great for the Western Region as it maintains traditional clubs and rivalries, but also encourages new rivalries to form.

“I’m confident it will have a positive impact on rugby league in the Western Region,” Mr Walsh said.

The name of the new competition is in honour of the late regional administrator who was the longestserving chairman of Western Division.

He died last year aged only 65 after a long battle with illness and, at the time, was still chairman and secretary of Group 10 — a role that he had held since the 1990s.

Before that, he had been secretary of the Cowra Magpies Rugby League club, with whom he still had close ties.

Watching the government’s tortuous efforts at deporting unvaxxed international tennis star, Novak Djokovic from the Australian Open recently — it occurred to me how little interest I’ve had in the game in recent years.

Frankly, I don’t think I’m alone. Time was when almost-every substantial property in NSW had an obligatory “clay” (swept sand) tennis court for the kids and parents to pound around on during summer.

Ours was one of those, hiring-out the backyard court for local women’s social comps and family players. But tennis in Australia doesn’t seem to hold the same popular sway over the public imagination as it did up until the 1990s.

My grandparents actually built our first court out of the pebblestrewn mounds of the vicious purple “meat-ants” that proliferated on the Cumberland Plain at the time, trucking them to our property on an old Bedford truck.

For kids that didn’t want to stand around on a hot cricket oval for hours each summer Saturday, tennis was the perfect alternative that offered a fun game, great fitness, social contact, and the chance to wear stylish whites and Dunlop Volleys.

It was also one of the sports where girls and boys competed on a nearequal footing, mixed doubles being the perfect chance for everyone in the family to get a game.

Watching Australian players like “Rocket” Rod Laver, Tony Roche, Ken “Muscles” Rosewall, Margaret Court, and Yvonne Goolagong (Cawley) sweep majors in New York, Paris, London, and even our own Australian Open in Melbourne, was a source of national sporting pride.

Families would sit around the television and watch the Australia Davis Cup and Federation Cup teams take on the great American players such as Jimmy Connors, Vitas Gerulaitis, Chris Evert, and Billie Jean King.

At our family get-togethers on Boxing Day, we used to switch back-and-forth from the Boxing Day cricket Test in Melbourne to the Australian Open, which at the time ran concurrently, to see the centre-court match of the day.

While cricket still holds undisputed sway as our truly national sport, I wouldn’t have read about, watched, or cared about, a tennis game for years.

The reasons for this are probably many and varied. Seeing our players suddenly swept out of the top rankings in the late 1970s after the first huge wave of American, and then European, players started taking the titles we used to win, may have played its part.

But the huge money that rushed into the sport when it went “Open” in the late 1960s (tennis used to be an amateur sport, hard to believe) simply killed it for many people.

As prize-monies started going through the roof and the giant, hi-tech rackets took-over from the old wooden framed and cat-gut (lambs’ intestine) standard-head rackets, the style of play also became more robotic and regimented.

Great serve-volleyers of the game such as Australia’s John Newcombe and Pete Sampras from the United States started being replaced by back-court belters like Ivan Lendl and Boris Becker.

The players, many learning their craft in the uniform coaching style of the American college circuit, also became less engaging. Apparently seeking to overcome this impression, broadcasters of the Hopman Cup, a warm-up national teams event for the Australian Open, started providing rapid-fire personal interviews with the players between points.

Seeing the players answer stockstandard “what’s your favourite food” questions with droning answers showing no real interest or enthusiasm, only heightened the impression that many don’t have a lot of personality outside of their sport.

Only funny part was seeing many of the male players answer “I have none” when asked what their worst points as a person were!

Compare this to the larrikin, knockaround spirit that many of our cricketers such as Pat Cummins and instant Ashes cult hero, Scott Boland, still effect, and one can see why following tennis has largely become the provenance of wealthy, older Australians.

“As many Stuarttownites visit and shop in Orange and so many from the Orange area visit Lake Burrendong, I thought some of your readers may be interested in other activities here,” writes Pam. “Orange manufacturer, Bushman Tanks, has kindly donated a much needed water tank to the Stuart Town Action Group Inc for their Headquarters at 40 Molong Street; a dilapidated building with transformation renovations well under way, and accommodating a Community Centre for several groups, artists and recently established Food Bank.

“Bushman are noted for their quality and their generosity is greatly appreciated as the tank is essential to our activities.

“Thanks also to Peter Merryman for securing and collecting the tank yesterday to take advantage of predicted rain, now that roof repairs and recent power saving solar panels have been installed.”

Pam also extended thanks to Dubbo Regional Council who have resurrected the town’s heavily-overgrown tennis courts.

“Stuart Town had a great start to the New Year with Dubbo Council workers finding the bones of the tennis courts still usable after removing considerable growth, including shrubs and trees!

“The courts can now be used for fun and the health benefits to our community, visitors and the school. A big “THANK YOU” to Dubbo Regional Council and their hard working crew for this and the preparation of the oval for the re-establishment of cricket at Stuart Town.”

S ORANGE MENSRawsPthRorOneBU NOTES — Keith Welcome to 2022 – your Probus Club is up and in action, so get with the fun and fellowship.

First meeting was on 5th January, with a smaller but happy group in attendance. The Board met and confirmed all is in order. Annual membership fees have been set at $50— The next planned outing is a train and bus trip to Parkes. Travel to Parkes on 9th March, by train, have a nice pre-arranged lunch at a local pub, then catch the coach back to Orange and get a different view of the countryside.

The cost will be minimal as on your Seniors travel concession it will cost only $2.50 for the trip. You will need to book with the Railway to gain the concession. There will be more details of times etc at the 2nd February meeting. It promises to be a good day out.

January meeting's program was a most enlightening presentation by Doreen Rawsthorne, of her experience with V.I.S.E. (Volunteers for Isolated Student Education). VISE volunteers

spend a month in remote and isolated places relieving the teacher who is usually the student’s mother in times of stress – the mother may, for example, be ill or have a new baby, and needs help. It is all Distance Education, or as it was known, School of The Air. Doreen did three placements; two in western Queensland, and one in N.T. near the Gulf of Carpentaria. The lifestyle was very different in each of these places and like in The King and I, “if you become a teacher, by your students you’ll be taught”. It was a great experience. Friendships have been forged.

Next meeting’s speaker will be Jeff File who is an expert on all things water, and is sure to be very interesting, given that we have only recovered from a stressful drought.

On 2nd March, John Tancred will enlighten us about the life and times of a Barrister.

THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council's management of Cook Park. Lawn mowing before 7am on weekdays, using a road-sweeper and blower vac at 6.30am on Sunday to clean-up washed-away gravel from paths. Stormdamaged trees (located at the duck pond) and tree branches around the park left for weeks that have not been removed. Washed-

away gravel paths including a sink-hole near the toilets that constantly wash into stormwater drains. Council, you need a refresher on EPA noise regulations, better supervision of whoever works at Cook Park, and a review of how much money is wasted on gravel paths that wash-away every storm and block the Kite Street storm-water drain.

THUMBS UP to the Orange City Council worker, who on Friday, January 14 at Orange Airport, helped my daughter and myself to change a flat tyre. Not only was it a Friday, but he also had just finished work and was on his way home. Very grateful for his help and getting us back on the road, and all with a smile!

New Years Resolutions!

We would like to add ‘Make an appointment at Blackwell Short to discuss Powers of Attorney’ to your New Years Resolutions list.

If you haven’t already got a Power of Attorney in place, the start of a new year is the perfect time to consider making one. Alternatively you may have prepared one years ago when you made your first Will, in which case it is time to review it.

A Power of Attorney allows someone you appoint to make financial and legal decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. The powers include but are not limited to paying your bills, transacting on your bank account, drawing cheques from your bank account, signing leases and mortgages on your behalf, and signing sale of land contracts on your behalf.

You may need a General Power of Attorney which is for a specific purpose while you still have mental capacity to make decisions, such as you are travelling overseas and need someone to sign a lease or mortgage on your behalf while you are away.

The more common version is an Enduring Power of Attorney which comes into effect when you have lost your mental capacity – allowing the appointed person to make financial and legal decisions on your behalf when you are no longer mentally capable of doing so yourself.

You can appoint more than one person as your attorney, and you can also appoint an alternate attorney. You need to implicitly trust your attorney, as they be making decisions that are in your best interests and may have considerable power over your finances.
