THE ROARING DAYS OF GOLD FEVER Their shining Eldorado Beneath the southern skies Was day and night forever Before their eager eyes

Bathurst, N.S.W. Although finds were reported a er this, it wasn’t until Edward Hargraves announced his own discovery on 3rd April 1851, that excitement began to mount.

~ Henry Lawson Recently I drove to Ophir to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the bush and Summer Hill creek. There were a couple of fishermen trying their luck in the still waters, but no one else to disturb the peaceful scene.

I tried to imagine what it would have looked like 150 years ago and recalled the above lines wri en by Henry Lawson in the 1880s.

He was remembering stories he had heard as a child about the days when Australia was in the midst of a great social and cultural upheaval, which would, ultimately, shape the future of the people.

The catalyst for this change was the gli ering yellow metal, which mankind has coveted for centuries.

Just thirty five years a er the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove, the assistant Surveyor General to the colony, one James M’Brian, recorded in his notebook that on 16th February, 1823, he “found numerous particles of gold in the sand and hills convenient to the Fish River”, at a spot about 15 miles east of

By this time, transportation to the eastern states had ceased and the government was becoming increasingly worried by the number of men leaving for the goldfields of California.

Hargraves, himself an experienced miner, had in fact just returned from California and recognised the gold-bearing qualities of the ranges around Bathurst.

He demonstrated simple methods of finding alluvial gold to a number of men from the district, and interest and enthusiasm increased.

By the end of that year, rich gold fields had also been found at Ballarat and Bendigo in Victoria — and Australia was thrust into its golden age.

The effect on the population was remarkable.

The Bathurst press reported: “Men meet together, stare stupidly at each other, talk incoherent nonsense, and wonder what will happen next — Bathurst is mad again.”

A special correspondent to the “Sydney Morning Herald” wrote in that paper on 28th May, 1851: “I reached Bathurst on Saturday and found the gold mania still more violent than

in Sydney, and much increased by the arrival of a man with a piece of gold, three and a half pounds in weight, which he turned up, he said, like a root of potatoes — and to-day (he) even has not recovered so far as to be able to eat!”

The paper went on to report, with some distaste, “A complete mental madness seems to have possessed every member of the community and, as a natural consequence, there has been a universal rush to the diggings.”

Hargraves was so disturbed by all this, that he was moved to write a le er to the editors of the Herald: “You will exercise your influence as public servants, to check the present excitement which will, I trust, be the means of preventing much more suffering among the people.”

Samuel Stutchbury, newly appointed Government Geologist, began his duties at Ophir in January, 1851. He also expressed his dismay at a situation, which seemed to be rapidly ge ing out of control.

“I fear that unless something is done very quickly, much confusion will arise — people se ing up claims etc— many entirely without food, and stores not to be got.”

He ends his le er on a pathetic note: “Excuse this being wri en in pencil, as there is no ink yet in this city of Ophir.”

Entering their second-year in the Colour City at their 115 Peisley Street shopfront (opposite the Railway Station carpark), business is picking-up as we all look to get back to work, he said.

“People are now coming back from holidays, the kids are going back to school, and it’s that time that you want to have one of your most important pieces of office equipment operating as best as it can,”

Originally from Campbelltown in western Sydney, he has more than a decade’s experience with a major retail chain, before deciding to spread his wings and start his own business venture helping keep locals logged-on and in-range in Orange and surrounds.

“In simple terms, we supply and repair mobile phones, tablets, PC’s, and Mac’s. Anything in that field, then come to us.

“Our big difference is customer service; This is a real need that I saw in the local community. I spent 15 years in the IT industry and saw a need locally for a different type of business,” he added.

Another string to Tim’s bow is coaching sessions for those who want to get a lot more familiar with computers.

“One thing that has started to be popular is our oneon-one coaching sessions for customers. A man came in the other day, and he bought a new phone, and the training session was how to add a contact in and send a message.

“Teaching people how to open a Facebook video call and talk to their families is very rewarding for us, it’s a very cool thing to do,” he added.

The Twist

It didn’t take long for locals to embrace the new style of dancing, the Twist, in January 1962.

To help them master the steps, dancing teachers Pat and Harry Brewer organised practice sessions at Allcorn’s Ballroom. This image shows Anne Kearney and Barbara Corby dancing to Chubby Checker’s hit song ‘The Twist’. The dance became a worldwide craze.

The population of Stuart Town (also known as Ironbark, made famous from the Banjo Patterson poem “The Man from Ironbark”) almost doubled on Australia Day. This year the train from Orange pulled up at noon, as estimated 200 people disembarked, and set up picnics in Moxon Park and to join the Australia Day celebrations at the Ironbark Inn Hotel.

At one point, it resembled a herd of cows meandering down Molong Street.

Many wandered the town’s main street, taking photos of themselves in front of iconic buildings, like the Train Station, the Kinkara Tea Building, the old Bakery, and the famous pub itself “The Ironbark Inn Hotel”.

The Staff at the Ironbark Inn Hotel put on fantastic meals and the crowds spread out over the bar, undercover seating area, and outside eating areas.

There were lots of groups and families from Orange, including a crowd from Oaktree Retirement Village, who all had a wonderful day.
